PACKERS TO PRESENT COMMUNITY QUARTERBACK AWARDS TODAY

posted 11/28/01

Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan will present the 2001 Community Quarterback Awards during an 11:30 press conference later this morning at Brett Favre's Steak House.

Chia Ly, a volunteer at Hmong Association of Green Bay, will be recognized among 10 deserving finalists as this year's Community Quarterback winner. As a result of Ly's outstanding efforts, a $10,000 grant will be made to the Hmong Association of Green Bay in her name.

Ly has served as president of the Hmong Association of Green Bay since 1998. She helped organize the board of directors, and ran the organization so that Hmong Association could fulfill its mission to serve the Southeast Asian population in Brown County.

In addition to Ly, the finalists for the award and their affiliations are as follows:

Sister Carlotta Ullmer, Literacy Council of Brown County (runner up)

The Club, Special Olympics of Northeastern Wisconsin (runner up)

Harley Larsen, The Salvation Army

Mike Vanryzin, Greater Green Bay Y.M.C.A.

Gene Schuh, Paul's Pantry

Reid Peot, Family Services

Gerald Wickwire, Lakeland Chapter of the American Red Cross

Lisa Manna, Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay

Nancy Amrbrust, United Way of Brown County

Each finalist will receive a $1,000 grant this morning, to be donated to his/her non-profit group. Carolotta and the Club will receive an additional $2,500 for being selected as runners-up to Ly.

Ly now becomes eligible to receive the NFL's national Community Quarterback Award and a $25,000 grant, presented in late December to one of the league's 31 local winners and his/her charity.

Funded by NFL Charities, the NFL Community Quarterback Award recognizes community and youth volunteers who demonstrate leadership, dedication and a commitment to bettering their communities. The nomination process is fulfilled by charitable organizations that nominate their distinguished volunteers, and a selection committee then is appointed by each NFL team to select its finalists and winners.

Members of the media are invited to cover this morning's presentation at the restaurant, as well as the honoreesà luncheon immediately following.

Inquiries may be directed to Jeanne McKenna, the Packersà director of community relations, at 920/496-5700.
