PACKERS TO OPEN STADIUM HALF-HOUR EARLIER SUNDAY TO EXPEDITE FAN ENTRY FOR MINNESOTA GAME; TWO AIR FORCE FLY-OVERS SCHEDULED
posted 12/27/01
In an additional effort to get fans to their Lambeau Field seats by kickoff Sunday, Packers President Bob Harlan announced today that stadium gates will open at 9:30 a.m. - a half-hour earlier than normal - for the team's regular-season home finale against the Minnesota Vikings.
Kickoff is set for 12 noon. As usual, gates to the stadium parking lot will open at 8 a.m.
"Because the increased security now in place does take additional time, and because some fans have not taken our advice to arrive at the turnstiles 15 or 20 minutes earlier than normal, we have discovered that a number of them have not been able to get to their seats in time for the kickoff," Harlan noted.
"We are hopeful that opening the stadium gates a half-hour earlier will provide the solution to the problem. The solution, however, obviously depends on our fans taking advantage of the opportunity to enter the stadium earlier."
As has been the case ever since the increased security has been in place, no carry-ins will be permitted, Commander Al Timmerman of the Green Bay Police Department also reminded.
AIR FORCE SALUTE: The United States Air Force will have a substantial presence at Lambeau Field Sunday - punctuated by two fly-overs.
The highlight of the visit will be a halftime enlistment ceremony which will find 150 young people from throughout the state of Wisconsin enlisting in the Air Force. Major General Todd Stewart will preside at the ceremony.
The first fly-over - by a KC-235 from the Air National Guard, will occur upon completion of the anthem, to be sung by Senior Master Sergeant Butch Gray. The second, by a C-130 from the Air Force Reserve, will take place immediately following the enlistment ceremony at halftime.
Gen. Stewart is the director of plans and programs, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
PRACTICE SQUAD SIGNING: The Packers have signed free agent linebacker Paris Lenon to the team's practice squad, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced today.
Cornerback Hurley Tarver was released to make room for Lenon on the 5-player squad.
It is the second time around as a Packer for Lenon, 6-1 and 233 pounds, who previously had been signed to the active roster on April 26, 2001. He later was waived July 25 and signed with Seattle August 16. He was waived by the Seahawks August 28 and had been out of football since.
Lenon, coming out of Richmond University, originally had signed with Carolina April 26, 2000, and subsequently was waived June 19. He later signed with Memphis of the XFL January 31, 2001, and completed the season with the Maniax prior to signing on with the Packers for the first time.
The newcomer has been assigned jersey number 53.
