PACKERS HOST PRESEASON MONDAY NIGHT GAME, PLAY FIRST 2 TILTS ON ROAD
posted 03/21/02
 | | The Packers & Browns will face off on August 26 in Lambeau Field |
Highlighted by a nationally televised "Monday Night Football" matchup at home, the Green Bay Packers' 2002 preseason schedule, announced today, also will find them playing their first two games on the road to help facilitate the ongoing renovation of Lambeau Field.
The Packers will open their preseason agenda against the Eagles, 2001 champions of the National Football Conference's Eastern Division, at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium Saturday night, August 10, with kickoff set for 6:30, CDT (Wisconsin time).
They then will invade the southwest to take on the Arizona Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium In Tempe, Arizona, Saturday night, August 17, before getting off the road. The kickoff is scheduled for 9 o'clock, Wisconsin time.
GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman next will introduce his developing 2002 Packers to the Wisconsin faithful in a "Monday Night Football" contest against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night, August 26, one which will find John Madden making his Lambeau Field "debut" as a member of ABC's announce team alongside Al Michaels.
Kickoff is set for 7 o'clock, CDT.
The Packers then will close out their preseason schedule by hosting the Tennessee Titans Friday night, August 30, in another 7 o'clock contest.
The Eagles, Cardinals and Titans games will be televised over the team's state network with Chris Roth of flagship station WBAY-TV calling the play-by-play, former Packer and current Fox Sports analyst Bill Maas, a new member of the broadcast team, providing commentary, and Andy Kendeigh of Milwaukee's WISN-TV, reporting from the field.
The Packers' visit to Philadelphia will mark their first preseason appearance in the City of Brotherly Love since 1945. They last met the Eagles in a preseason game in 1983, when the Birds visited Lambeau Field.
The Green and Gold's other road venture will find them playing a preseason game against the Cardinals in Arizona for the first time since the Big Red moved to Phoenix in 1988.
In contrast, the Packers will be facing the "new" Cleveland Browns for the fourth time in their brief existence - and in preseason play for the third consecutive year.
The Titans, formerly the Houston Oilers, will be making their first ever preseason visit to Green Bay in the Packers' non-league finale.
