Packers Re-Sign G/T Alcender Jackson, Place T Chad Clifton On Injured Reserve
posted 12/04/2002
Adding offensive line "insurance" following the loss of starting left tackle Chad Clifton, the Green Bay Packers have re-signed guard/tackle Alcender Jackson as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.
Jackson, a 6-3, 311-pound, third-year professional, previously had been a member of the Packers' practice squad Oct. 2-5.
Clifton, who suffered a season-ending sprain to ligaments in the pelvic area during the Packers' Nov. 24 game at Tampa, was placed on injured reserve, making room for Jackson on the 53-man active roster.
The 25-year-old Jackson, a three-year starter as a collegian at LSU, originally was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2000. After seeing action at both right and left guard in the preseason as a rookie, he was inactive for the first 10 games of the regular season, then appeared in three of the Cowboys' last six contests. He subsequently was inactive for all 16 regular-season games in 2001.
Allocated to the Rhein Fire of the NFL Europe League for the NFLEL's 2002 season, Jackson garnered all-league honors at guard as he helped fellow honoree and teammate Jamal Robertson finish third among running backs with 792 yards and 8 touchdowns on 151 carries. He returned to training camp with Dallas in July and was with the Cowboys through the preseason before being waived in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season Sept. 1.
Jackson, who joined the Packers on the practice field today, has been assigned jersey No. 64. |
