Packers Sign WR/KR J.J. Moses
posted 12/14/2002
The Green Bay Packers have elevated wide receiver/kick returner J.J. Moses from the practice squad to the team's 53-man active roster, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Saturday.
The 5-6, 178-pound Moses, who thus becomes available for possible kick return duty in the Packers' game against the 49ers in San Francisco Sunday, had been re-signed to the practice squad Dec. 2.
Moses, earlier a standout wide receiver and kick returner at Iowa State University, led the NFL Europe League in punt returns during the 2002 season while playing for the Scottish Claymores, averaging 11.2 yards for 25 runbacks. He also ranked third in the NFLEL in kickoff returns with 344 yards on 14 returns, a 24.6-yard average.
Seeing action in 10 games with two starts, Moses augmented his return contributions with 11 pass receptions for 94 yards, an 8.5-yard average.
Moses, who entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Kansas City in 2001, had been to training camp with the Chiefs each of the past two years and spent the final seven weeks of the 2001 campaign on the Chiefs' practice squad, following a short stint on the Packers practice squad (Sept. 26-Oct. 2).
The 23-year-old Waterloo, Iowa, native, whose given name is Jerry James Moses, posted 82 receptions for 1,226 yards and 4 touchdowns during his collegiate career at Iowa State. He also averaged 9.1 yards for 45 punt returns and 22.1 yards for 43 kickoff returns.
A record-breaking running back at Waterloo High School, he broke his father's career rushing record for the school, gaining 1,331 yards (a 7.0-yard average) with 14 touchdowns as a senior.
The newcomer has been assigned kersey number 86. |
