Seeking depth in the secondary, the Green Bay Packers have acquired cornerback Derek Combs in a conditional future draft choice trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Thursday.

Combs, a former Ohio State running back drafted by Oakland, switched to defensive back during the 2002 NFL Europe League season with Amsterdam. He subsequently played on special teams in four regular-season games for the Raiders during the '02 NFL season, making three tackles and returning five kickoffs for 71 yards (a 14.2-yard average). Waived Oct. 8, he later was signed as a reserve/future Dec. 31, 2002, by the Chiefs, who activated him from the reserve list January 28.

While with Amsterdam in 2002, the 6-foot, 181-pound Combs played in 10 games, with seven starts, and registered 19 tackles in his first season as a defensive back. He also was credited with eight passes defensed, one quarterback sack and five special teams tackles. The possessor of impressive speed (he has been timed in the 4.3s for 40 yards), Combs additionally returned 12 kickoffs 282 yards (a 23.5-yard average), ranking second on the team.

Originally a seventh-round draft selection of Oakland in 2001 (the 228th player chosen), he was with the Raiders through training camp and the preseason before being waived in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season (Sept. 2). He later spent time on the practice squads of Tennessee and Miami before being signed to the Raiders' practice squad Nov. 7 for the balance of the '01 season.

As a collegian, Combs was a four-year letterman at Ohio State as a tailback. He played in 11 games (nine starts) as a senior, leading the Buckeyes in rushing with a career-high 888 yards. He added nine pass receptions for 78 yards (an 8.7-yard average) while earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. Earlier, he was named USA Today Ohio Player of the Year and selected as the Associated Press Division I Offensive Player of the Year for Ohio as a senior at Grove City High School in Urbancrest, Ohio, after rushing 214 times for 2,149 yards (a 9.5-yard average) and 24 touchdowns.

The newcomer has been assigned jersey number 45.
