Packers Sign WR/KR Brian McDonald
posted 06/18/2003
Continuing efforts to upgrade their return game, the Green Bay Packers have signed Brian McDonald, the NFL Europe League's No. 2 kickoff returner, as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.
McDonald, 5-9 and 178 pounds, averaged 27.8 yards for 14 kickoff returns as a member of the Frankfurt Galaxy during the NFLEL's recent 10-game season, finishing close behind league-leader Kendall Newson of the Rhein Fire, who posted a 28.7-yard average for 15 runbacks.
McDonald, who also played wide receiver, caught 19 passes for 312 yards, a 16.4-yard average, and closed out the season ranking 10th in the league in combined net yards gained with 745, including 43 yards for 5 punt returns, an 8.6-yard average.
The 24-year-old University of Louisville alumnus had launched his professional career with the Louisville Fire of the AFL2 in 2001 and set the league's record for all-purpose yards with 3,289. He finished the '01 season with 83 receptions for 1,058 yards and 16 touchdowns, 13 missed field goal returns for 325 yards and 3 TDs, and 90 kick returns for 1,879 yards and 7 TDs, giving him a total of 26 touchdowns for the season.
McDonald subsequently signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent January 29, 2002, and was allocated to the NFLEL and Frankfurt for the first time on February 13, 2002. He finished the '02 season as the league's third-ranking punt returner (27 for 289 yards, a 10.7-yard average) and tied for 16th in pass receptions with 23 for 310 yards.
A two-time letter winner at Louisville, McDonald played as a reserve wideout and special teams performer for the Cardinals. He earlier was a three-time academic all-state performer at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Ky., helping St. Xavier win a state championship in 1992.
McDonald replaces wide receiver Travis Williams, who has been placed on the NFLE injured list (Achilles tendon). He has been assigned jersey No. 12. |
