Lambeau Field 'Treasure' Book Available For Order Now
posted 07/28/2003
Packers' fans can own the storied history of Lambeau Field in a new book called Lambeau Field: Green Bay's National Treasure.
This collectible hardcover coffee-table book will celebrate the 46-year history of Lambeau Field and completion of its $295 million renovation. The book will also feature many photos that have never before been published and will include a behind-the-scenes look inside the public and non-public areas of the newly renovated stadium.
The book is being produced by the Green Bay Packers in partnership with the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Fans can order by going online at www.PackersNews.com; by phone at (800) 444-0007; or at the Press-Gazette, 435 E. Walnut St., immediately.
"In late 1999, when we were trying to decide if we should redevelop Lambeau Field or build a new stadium, fans from across the country called and wrote, begging us to save this stadium," recalled Packers President Bob Harlan. "I found out that our fans love the stadium as much as they love the Packers. And I feel the same way. Lambeau Field is at the core of this franchise's identity."
Harlan and the Packers organization wanted to produce a book to give fans the opportunity "to have a piece of this history in their homes," he said.
The Packers partnered with the Press-Gazette to share Lambeau Field's story because of long history the paper has had with the Packers.
The Press-Gazette has closely covered the Packers since August 1919, when co-founders Curly Lambeau and Press-Gazette Sports Editor George W. Calhoun held the first organizational meeting of the team in the old Press-Gazette newsroom on Cherry Street, noted Publisher Bill Nusbaum. That coverage has included construction of the stadium that came to be called Lambeau Field and every game played there.
"We plan to tell Lambeau Field's unique story, in words and pictures, as only the hometown newspaper of the Green Bay Packers can," Nusbaum said.
The book will chronicle the stadium's earlier renovations and take fans on a Lambeau Leap down memory lane, recounting the Ice Bowl, Snow Bowl, Mud Bowl and other unforgettable games and performances.
A publication date of late fall is planned to allow the book to include stories and photos from reopening ceremonies on Sept. 7.
All proceeds will benefit the Green Bay Packers Foundation and the News Papers in Education Fund of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. |
