Packers-Chiefs Preview

Principals for the fourth time in their history in what is proclaimed "Football's Greatest Weekend," the defending NFC North Division champion Green Bay Packers will make their preseason debut against the Kansas City Chiefs on national television (ABC) in the annual Hall of Fame Game at Canton, Ohio, Monday evening (Aug. 4).

Kickoff for the contest, only the second of the National Football League's young 2003 preseason, is set for 7 o'clock , CDT (Wisconsin time), in sold-out Fawcett Stadium (22,364).

It will be an anniversary of sorts for the principals, who last met almost precisely five years ago - in an American Bowl matchup at Japan's Tokyo Dome Aug. 2, 1998, a game which saw the Packers prevail by way of a Ryan Longwell field goal in overtime, 27-24.

The Green and Gold enter Monday night's game as the most successful team in the NFL over the past two years (24-8-0) following a pair of back-to-back 12-4 seasons and consecutive postseason appearances un..

Packers Re-sign RB Herbert Goodman

Their ranks at running back currently depleted by a variety of injuries, the Green Bay Packers have re-signed third-year pro Herbert "Whisper" Goodman as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

Goodman, originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Graceland University, was primarily employed on special teams during the '00 and '01 seasons. The 5-11, 205-pound Miami native subsequently was waived on September 1, 2002, in the Packers' final roster reduction for the regular season. Appearing in 12 games overall, including 7 in '01, he averaged 30.0 yards for 5 kickoff returns and posted 3 tackles on kick coverage. He also averaged 16.5 yards for two kickoff returns in the Packers' Wild Card Playoff game at St.. Louis following the 2001 season.
Packers Sign DT Gilbert Brown To Multi-Year Contract; Waive G/T Jamil Soriano, LB Shantee Orr

Gilbert Brown is back...officially...and for good.

Brown, arguably the most dominating nose tackle in professional football, was not in evidence when Packers veterans reported to training camp last week.

But Tuesday, the nine-year veteran - who had not taken part in the team's two off-season mini-camps - proved his heart is permanently entrenched in Titletown by affixing his signature to a multi-year contract.

A contract, in keeping with his announced wishes, that assures he will retire as a Green Bay Packer.

The 32-year-old Brown, who had been working out under a personal trainer at his alma mater, the University of Kansas, prior to returning to Green Bay, will join the Packers on the practice field this afternoon.

Sherman, aware Brown has missed nine games over the past two years because of various injuries, is counting upon a new approach to enhance the veteran nose tackle's on-field appearances.
Packers Sign TE Cory Geason As Free Agent

Temporarily short-handed at tight end because of injuries to Bubba Franks (knee) and David Martin (hamstring), the Green Bay Packers have signed fourth-year professional Cory Geason as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Saturday.

Geason, 6-3 and 274 pounds, has played 26 career games over three NFL seasons, with three starts. Originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent in 1998, the 27-year-old Tulane alumnus was released during training camp. He subsequently joined Amsterdam of the NFL Europe League in 1999 and caught 30 passes for 299 yards and a team-leading 5 touchdowns, earning All-NFL Europe honors by vote of the international media.

After later spending the last two weeks of the '99 NFL season on Pittsburgh's practice squad, Geason earned a roster spot in 2000 after impressing the coaching staff with his blocking and receiving during training camp. Geason played in nine games, with three starts, before being placed on injured..

Augmenting their depth and experience in the defensive line, the Green Bay Packers have signed veteran tackle Steve Martin as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

An eighth-year professional, the 29-year-old University of Missouri alumnus has played in 101 career games - with 43 starts - since originally being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL draft, the 151st player chosen overall. Waived by Indianapolis on Oct. 21, 1998, after two-plus seasons with the Colts, he was claimed by Philadelphia the following day and spent the balance of the '98 season and the entire 1999 campaign with the Eagles, starting 15 of a possible 16 games in '99.

Martin subsequently signed with Kansas City as an unrestricted free agent Feb. 24, 2000, and played in all 16 games that season.
The Green Bay Packers will honor Lee Remmel, their long-time public relations director, by naming the press box in the redeveloped Lambeau Field the 'Lee Remmel Press Box,' Packers President & CEO Bob Harlan announced Saturday.

Remmel, now in his 30th year as a member of the Packers' front office, began covering the team as a newspaper reporter in 1945 before joining the organization in 1974.

"Lee has such a long, great history with this franchise, both as a reporter and public relations director," Harlan said in making the announcement. "He certainly will go down as one of the all-time great figures in the history of the Packers.

Expediting the contractual process with the official opening of training camp, the Green Bay Packers Friday signed three more 2003 draft selections - all but first-round pick Nick Barnett, GM/Head Coach announced as first-year players moved into the team's St. Norbert College training base.

Meanwhile, Andrew Brandt, the club's vice president of player finance, continued to work overtime with Barnett's agent in an attempt to reach an agreement that would get the former Oregon State standout into camp.

Defensive tackle/end Kenny Peterson of Ohio State, the team's third-round selection, and linebackers Hunter Hillenmeyer of Vanderbilt, a fifth-round pick, and Steve Josue of Carson-Newman, a seventh-round choice, formally entered the fold today, leaving Barnett as the only unsigned member of Green Bay's 2003 draft as Sherman prepared to put the rookies through their first training camp practice Saturday.

The Green Bay Packers and their Healthcare Partners - Bellin Health, St. Mary's Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital, Prevea and Touchpoint Health Plan - Friday unveiled the 2003 Don Hutson Center billboards.

This year's billboards - the third installment of what now has become an eagerly anticipated component of the season - feature a surgeon performing the "Lambeau Leap" into the stands. The fans in the crowd are Healthcare Partner employees who were invited to take part in the photo shoot.

As part of a multi-year agreement announced in September 2001, the Health Care Partners' billboards first appeared that year in their familiar positions on the side of the Don Hutson Center overlooking Clarke Hinkle Field on Oneida Street.

The first billboards featured a physician, his face painted half green and half gold, donned in a surgical mask and cap on one board and the phrase "It's In Our Blood" on the other. Last year's editions displayed the flexed arm of a P..

Packers Prepare To Open Training Camp, Defend Division Title

The Green Bay Packers have won more games in the past two years...two dozen...than any other team in the National Football League.

Beyond that considerable accomplishment, they also forged the NFL's only perfect (8-0) home record in 2002, a season the Green and Gold jointly punctuated by capturing the first championship of the new NFC North Division and a second consecutive playoff berth.

In so doing, they likewise matched 2001's 12-4 record - a win total bettered by only three other teams in the club's 82-year NFL annals - and became only the second team in the organization's distinguished history to win 12 (or more) games in back-to-back seasons.

Substantial achievements by any standard, but short, nevertheless, of Mike Sherman's consistently lofty expectations. The Packers' demanding general manager and head coach thinks only in terms of the ultimate...Super Bowls.

Sherman Issues Statement On Torrance Marshall Suspension

It has come to my attention from the League Office that Torrance Marshall has violated the NFL Substance Abuse Policy and that he will be suspended for the Packers' first four regular-season games of 2003.

Some time after our June mini-camp Torrance sought out the necessary steps in getting the professional help and counseling he needs. Hopefully this will only enhance his ability to put his priorities back in his life.

I am obviously disappointed that Torrance has put himself in this situation, but I am pleased that he has taken the necessary action to get himself well.

His teammates and coaches will support him as much as they possibly can through this process and hopefully will aid in his full recovery.

Packers Sign 7th-Round CB Chris Johnson

Officially adding sought-after speed to their defense, the Green Bay Packers have signed Louisville cornerback Chris Johnson, a seventh-round selection in the 2003 NFL draft, to a multi-year contract, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

Described as "fast, fast, fast - and inexperienced" by Bob Slowik, the Packers assistant head coach/defensive backs, Johnson reportedly was the fastest player in the draft, a designation he underscored by repeatedly shadowing receivers with ease during the Green and Gold's two post-draft mini-camps.

The 5-11, 195-pound Gladewater, Texas, native timed at a mercurial 4.23 seconds in the 40-yard dash, was a two-year letter winner at Louisville - after transferring from Blinn (Junior) College, located in Brenham, Texas - and started seven games as a senior. Playing 26 games overall, with eight starts, he posted 44 total tackles (32 solo), 1 tackle for loss and was credited with 7 passes defensed.

The 6-3, 207-pound Heckenbach (the name is pronounced YORG HECK-en-bach) has posted 65 pass receptions for 759 yards (an 11.7-yard average) and 5 touchdowns during his seven NFLEL seasons. He also registered one 2-point conversion and 4 stops on special teams.

Heckenbach played the last five seasons for the Berlin Thunder (1999-2003) after two years with the Frankfurt Galaxy (1997-98).

The 28-year-old Dusseldorf native snared 17 passes for 185 yards (a 10.9-yard average) and 3 TDs during the 2003 NFLEL season. A year earlier, he played in all 10 regular-season games and World Bowl X as Berlin's offensive national starter, pulling in 12 passes for 205 yards with a long of 66 yards while also serving as the Thu..
