Packers Acquire S Scott McGarrahan From Miami
posted 08/25/2003
The Green Bay Packers have acquired veteran safety Scott McGarrahan from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional seventh round draft choice in 2006, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Monday.
The 6-1, 200-pound McGarrahan, a sixth-round Packers selection in the 1998 draft, spent the first three of his five NFL seasons with Green Bay, playing in 44 games overall and ranking second in special teams tackles in 2000 with 15.
Released in the Packers' final roster reduction for the 2001 season (Sept. 2), the 29-year-old New Mexico alumnus subsequently signed on with Miami and played in all 16 regular-season games for the Dolphins, finishing fourth on the squad in special teams tackles with 14.
In 2002, McGarrahan played in 14 games in a reserve role, recording four tackles and a quarterback sack on defense and ranking eighth on the Dolphins with 10 special teams tackles. He also was credited with forcing one fumble.
A highlight of his personal '02 season came in a Monday night game against the Packers (Nov. 4) when he registered the first full sack of his NFL career, tackling quarterback Brett Favre for a 13-yard loss.
McGarrahan also was awarded a special teams game ball last season in a win over San Diego (Nov. 24) when he forced a fumble, stripping the ball from Reche Caldwell on a punt, and teammate Scott Gaylon recovered at the Chargers' 28-yard line, leading to a Dolphins touchdown four plays later.
As a collegian, the Arlington, Texas, native was a four-year letterman at New Mexico, starting each of his final three seasons and opening 34 straight games to close out his career, which he ended with 316 total tackles.
McGarrahan, who has been assigned jersey No. 43, will join the Packers on the practice field this afternoon. |
