Packers Waive 8 In Reaching Regular-Season, 53-Player Limit

The Green Bay Packers Sunday placed eight players on waivers, including 17th-year veteran center Frank Winters and running back Herbert "Whisper" Goodman, in reaching the NFL-mandated regular season player limit of 53 by Sunday's 3 p.m. (CDT) deadline.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman also announced the waiving of offensive linemen Bill Ferrario and David Brandt, running back Lamar Smith, defensive tackle Steve Martin, linebacker Steve Josue and safety Scott McGarrahan, re-acquired in a conditional draft choice trade with Miami last week.

Rookie wide receiver Carl Ford, a seventh-round draft choice from Toledo who suffered a knee injury in last Thursday night's preseason finale against Tennessee, was placed on injured reserve. Josue, out of Carson-Newman, also was a seventh-round selection in this year's draft.
Packers Release Two More Players, Roster Down To 62

Moving closer to the NFL regular-season roster limit of 53, the Green Bay Packers Saturday waived a pair of players, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Saturday.

Released was tight end/linebacker Tony Donald, a first-year player out of Western State (Colo.). Waived/injured was offensive tackle Jerry Wisne, a third-year pro from Notre Dame who saw action in two games with Green Bay last year in his lone season with the team. Wisne had suffered a left shoulder injury during the Packers' preseason finale with Tennessee this past Thursday.

The departures reduce the Packers' current roster to 62 players. Linebacker Torrance Marshall no longer counts against Green Bay's roster while serving a four-game league suspension for violation of the NFL Substance Abuse Policy.

Under NFL rules, teams must reach the regular-season limit of 53 by 3 p.m. CDT on Sunday, August 31. Teams may establish a five-player practice squad after 11 a.m. CDT on Monday, September 1.

Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall Of Fame Now Open At Lambeau Field Atrium

Football history is once again being made at Lambeau Field.

The Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame is now located at the new Lambeau Field Atrium, it was announced Thursday.

"Throughout our history, the Green Bay Packers have had a commitment to youth football," said Packers Executive Vice President and COO John Jones. "Partnering with the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association to bring their Hall of Fame to Lambeau is a natural fit."

The WFCA Hall of Fame is located on the ground level of the Atrium and features a wall of honor for Wisconsin football coaches from the high school and college level, as well as recognition of state football champions. An interactive kiosk allows fans to look up their favorite high school team or coach.

Dick Rundle, Executive Director of the WFCA and a Wisconsin/National Hall of Fame coach from Monona Grove, said Lambeau Field is a great location to recognize outstanding coaches and state football teams.

Statues Of Lambeau, Lombardi Unveiled

Think of the Green Bay Packers and many names come to mind -- Starr, Favre, Hutson, Hornung, Canadeo, Davis. But two names probably stand above the rest -- Lambeau and Lombardi.

Now, bronze statues of the two Green Bay Packers legends greet fans outside Lambeau Field. Members of the Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi families were on hand Wednesday evening, as the statues were unveiled in the main plaza outside the Lambeau Field Atrium.

"The two statues add to the tradition we wanted to preserve and enhance with the stadium redevelopment project," said Packers President and CEO Bob Harlan. "These statues add tradition and add warmth to the stadium."

The statues were designed and crafted by the husband-wife team of Julie Rotblatt-Amrany and Omri Amrany, owners of Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany in Highland Park, Illinois. Their resume of sports statues includes Michael Jordan outside the United Center, Harry Carey at Wrigley Field and the Detroit ..

The Green Bay Packers and the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay have joined forces with Wisconsin's Wendy's franchisees and Adoption Resources of Wisconsin to sponsor "The Bishop's Charities Game along with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption."

Packers-Titans Preview

Even with the board in the wake of an unproductive encounter with the Carolina Panthers, the Green Bay Packers (2-2) will strive to rebound against the undefeated Tennessee Titans in their preseason finale at Lambeau Field Thursday night (Aug. 28) and thus head into the regular season on a positive note.

Kickoff for the contest, the 43rd annual Bishop's Charities Game, will be 7:05, CDT (Wisconsin time). The game is a sellout (72,515).

The Packers, who had taken a two-game winning streak into action, fell to the undefeated (3-0) Panthers, 20-7, over the weekend in their first Lambeau Field appearance since last January's Wild Card Playoff against Atlanta.

The attendance for the 54th Midwest Shrine Game set a new Lambeau Field record, 69,831. The previous record, 65,358, was established at the Atlanta playoff game Jan. 4.

Packers-Panthers Recap

Undermined by the turnover and thwarted by a tightfisted Carolina defense, the Packers found the combination a little too much to overcome in falling to the Panthers, 20-7, in their maiden Lambeau Field appearance of the new season.

Although the visitors failed to capitalize on the opportunities, three first quarter turnovers - a lost fumble and a pair of interceptions - conspired to help keep the Packers scoreless prior to the intermission - along with a holding penalty on William Henderson which wiped out a 47-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Mike Sherman subsequently decided not to have Longwell essay a 57-yard field goal. He called, instead, for a punt and the principals shortly headed to their respective locker rooms in a 0-0 deadlock.

Under these rare circumstances - the Packers have seldom gone scoreless in either half of a game during the "Brett Favre Era," the first half highlight turned out to be a stirring goa..

The Green Bay Packers have acquired veteran safety Scott McGarrahan from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional seventh round draft choice in 2006, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Monday.

The 6-1, 200-pound McGarrahan, a sixth-round Packers selection in the 1998 draft, spent the first three of his five NFL seasons with Green Bay, playing in 44 games overall and ranking second in special teams tackles in 2000 with 15.

Released in the Packers' final roster reduction for the 2001 season (Sept. 2), the 29-year-old New Mexico alumnus subsequently signed on with Miami and played in all 16 regular-season games for the Dolphins, finishing fourth on the squad in special teams tackles with 14.

In 2002, McGarrahan played in 14 games in a reserve role, recording four tackles and a quarterback sack on defense and ranking eighth on the Dolphins with 10 special teams tackles. He also was credited with forcing one fumble.

Sherman: Rivera May Be Ready For Opener With Minnesota

Green Bay Packers right guard Marco Rivera could miss 2-4 weeks of action after spraining the medial collateral ligament of his left knee in Saturday night's game against the Carolina Panthers, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday.

"Because of who it is and the way that he's been able to come back from injuries in the past, I wouldn't rule him out for the opener (Sept. 7 vs. Minnesota)," said Sherman. "He plans on playing in that game. For that to happen, though, he needs to exhibit a certain level of strength in the knee."

Last season, despite tearing the MCL in his left knee Sept. 22 at Detroit and spraining the MCL in his right knee Nov. 17 at Minnesota, Rivera did not miss a start, extending his personal starting streak to 67 games - the fourth-longest active string among Packers. He also previously played through a broken left hand, suffered late in the 2001 season.

Packers-Panthers Press Box Notes

-THE PACKERS OWN a 2-and-1 record against Carolina in Lambeau Field. They won their first-ever meeting, in the NFC Championship Game played here on Jan. 12, 1996, 30-13, and have split with the Panthers in the regular season at home, dropping a 33-31 decision in 1999 and squeezing out a 17-14 win in their 2002 meeting here.

-HEAVY HITTER: GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, who has taken the home-field "advantage" to a lofty level, boasts an imposing .875, composite "batting average" as a head coach in Lambeau Field. Under his direction, the Packers have won 28 of 32 games on home turf, the overall record including a 21-3 mark in regular season (the best in the NFL over the past three seasons), 6-0 in preseason and 1-1 in postseason play.
Packers-Panthers Preview

Coming off a three-week road "trip" and back-to-back victories on foreign turf, the 2-1 Green Bay Packers make their first home appearance of the 2003 preseason in Lambeau Field Saturday night (Aug. 23) when they host the undefeated Carolina Panthers (2-0) in the 54th annual Midwest Shrine Game.

Kickoff for the contest, a sellout (72,515), is set for 7 o'clock, CDT.

The Packers, mounting their most impressive offensive effort to date, dispatched the Cleveland Browns, 38-31, in Browns Stadium Friday night, out-scoring their hosts 31-17 over the last three quarters to post a second straight win.

The 38 points represent a preseason, single-game high for the Packers under GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman in his four-year tenure. The previous best, 37, came in a 37-24 victory over the New York Jets in Sherman's very first game as Green Bay's head coach, August 4, 2000.

The "new" Lambeau Field is ready for its first full test, as the Packers host the Carolina Panthers in the first home pre-season game of the 2003 season.

"Safety and security will remain a top priority," said Doug Collins, Security Supervisor - Facilities for the Green Bay Packers. "Fans won't have to deal with the Lambeau Field construction hurdles of the past couple of seasons, but there will be some important items for fans to remember as they plan their game day activities."

Traffic, parking, security and stadium entry and exit plans were the topic of a news conference today hosted by the Green Bay Packers. Representatives from the Brown County Sheriff's Department, Green Bay Police Department, Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department, PMI and the Packers discussed plans for getting fans to and from the stadium following the changes during the $295 million redevelopment project.

Packers-Browns Recap

The return of four starters (offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher and wide receivers Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson) had a salutary effect upon the Packers offense in their Cleveland appearance. After settling for a lone field goal in short-term stints in the first two preseason games, quarterback Brett Favre and the first unit struck first with an impressive, 7-play, 78-yard scoring drive, appropriately climaxed by a 22-yard bullseye to the previously "missing" Driver.

Favre then further celebrated the return of his colleagues, promptly directing another long drive, this one a 14-play, 79-yard maneuver capped by a one-yard burst up the middle for the score by running back Ahman Green.

The latter, plus Ryan Longwell's conversion, merely squared the score, however, at 14-14, the Browns also having been up to some mischief on offense, including an 82-yard reverse screen pass to running back William Green for Cleveland's first score of the evening.

Bidding to upgrade the defensive line, the Green Bay Packers have signed veteran tackle Larry Smith as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday.

The 6-5, 310-pound Florida State alumnus, a second-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 1999, has played in 51 games for the Jaguars over four seasons, with seven starts.

Smith, earning a starting assignment early in the '02 season after playing a regular rotation at defensive tackle over his first three years, started the first three games and made a career-high 6 tackles in his third start, then suffered ankle injury and lost his starting job to rookie John Henderson.

Despite the injury, Smith went on to have the most productive year of his career, posting 36 tackles, including 16 unassisted stops and one quarterback sack. He has career totals of 98 tackles and 4 sacks, along with 2 forced fumbles and 4 fumble recoveries.

-'BATTING' .750: Mike Sherman comes into tonight's contest with a combined 3-1 record against the Browns as a head coach. It includes a 2-1 mark in preseason and a victory (30-7) in 2001 in his only regular-season venture against the Ohioans.

The preseason record: 2000 - Packers 34, Browns 33; 2001- Browns 10, Packers 3; 2002 - Packers 27, Browns 20.

Packers Re-Sign WR Mike Horacek Free Agent

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed wide receiver Mike Horacek as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

Horacek, a 30-year-old Arena Football League veteran, has caught 465 passes for 5,918 yards and 128 touchdowns in six seasons while amassing 786 points. Along the way, he set and still holds the AFL's single-season record for touchdowns scored with 46 during the 2000 season while with the Iowa Barnstormers.

Horacek, with the league's Las Vegas entry during the recent 2003 season, set club records with 127 receptions for 585 yards and 36 touchdowns, breaking marks he established a year earlier when the team was known as New Jersey Predators.

The 6-1, 203-pound Iowa State alumnus previously was a member of the Packers' practice squad for three weeks during the 2000 season. He rejoined the team for training camp in 2001 and was waived in the final roster reduction for the regular season Sept. 2. He subsequently was re-signed to the p..

Packers-Falcons Recap

The Packers, exhibiting a split personality, played two distinctly different halves of football in rallying to turn back the Falcons in their Georgia Dome home.

In the early going, against the Packers first units, it began to look like the Falcons were en route to a cake walk. They amassed 220 yards of offense in the first 20 minutes and 44 seconds of action, parlaying their quick getaway into a 21-3 lead by the 5:44 mark of the second quarter.

There, from the scoreboard perspective, it ended for the Falcons, who were not to score again for the balance of the evening.

Meanwhile, the Packers' subsequent renaissance, triggered largely by reserves, appeared to begin in the second quarter when GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman turned over the football to Craig Nall, the third of four Green Bay quarterbacks to take a turn under center during the course of the evening.

Nall's first possession ended in a punt but, on the second, he mustered a 71-yard scoring dri..

Packers-Browns Preview

Having weathered an early fusillade from the Michael Vick Falcons, then rebounded smartly to pull out their first victory of the preseason, the Green Bay Packers (1-1) take to the road for the third consecutive week, invading Cleveland Friday night (Aug. 15) in quest of a second straight success in a nationally televised (CBS) matchup with the Browns.

Kickoff in Cleveland Browns Stadium is set for 7 o'clock, CDT (Wisconsin time).

The Packers, quickly behind 14-0 in Atlanta's Georgia Dome - and later in arrears 21-3 - as the multi-talented Vick flashed a hot hand, proceeded to retaliate with 24 unanswered points en route to a 27-21 comeback victory.

For the Green and Gold, Friday night's Cleveland contest will be the final excursion of the preseason, following which they will return from the Ohio engagement to make four consecutive appearances in Lambeau Field.

-RARE VISIT: In relative terms, the Packers, are "strangers" to Atlanta. Tonight paying their first Georgia visit since 1992, they had hosted their most recent five meetings with the Falcons - including Wild Card Playoff contests in 1995 and last January.

-JUST FOR THE RECORD: From the competitive perspective, the Packers are in search of their first victory in the Georgia Dome. In that appearance in '92 - their only previous visit to the G-Dome - the Falcons prevailed, 24-10

-BRETT FAVRE, who had been a rookie with Atlanta a year earlier, was Green Bay's starting quarterback on that occasion and making only the second start of his professional career.

-QUICK QUOTE: GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman (on the skills of offensive tackle Mark Tauscher): "Ask Kabeer (Gbaja-Biamila)...The guy who he has the toughest time against in the pass rush is (Mark) Tauscher.
Pizza, Ice Cream, Retail Shop Top Off Atrium Line-up

The Lambeau Field Atrium's final line-up is now set. The Green Bay Packers announced Thursday that Paparazzi Pizzeria, Frozen in Time Ice Cream Shop and the Packers Pro Shop Extra Points store will open this fall to complete the offerings in the Atrium.

"With the additions of the two restaurants and the retail store we feel we've accomplished a major goal in creating a destination point that will be enjoyed by Packers fans and others from around the world," said Packers President & CEO Bob Harlan. "Our goal all along has been to create a fan friendly and family friendly atmosphere. We think we've been able to do that with the mix of attractions we've brought to the Atrium."

Paparazzi Pizzeria and Frozen in Time Ice Cream Shop will be operated by the Supple Restaurant Group, the Oshkosh-based company that also operates Fratello's Presto and the Meat Packing Company, two of the Lambeau Field Atrium Eateries. "It's great to be able to expand our partnership with th..

The Green Bay Packers have waived/injured second-year running back Reggie White, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

Sherman also announced that Brian McDonald, a first-year receiver from the University of Louisville, has retired and will be placed on the reserve/retired list.

White's departure makes room for newly-acquired tight end Wesley Walls. The Packers currently stand at their roster limit of 88 players, including NFLEL exemptions.

In another transaction, defensive tackle Steve Warren passed his physical examination, was removed from the reserve/physically unable to perform list and cleared to resume practice. Warren had been sidelined with a back problem.

Packers-Falcons Preview

Literally washed out of their preseason opener against Kansas City (although it goes into the records as a 9-0 victory for the red-clad Chiefs), the Green Bay Packers next make a second bid for their first non-league success against the imposing Falcons in Atlanta's Georgia Dome Saturday night (Aug. 9).

With a crowd of 50,000 to 55,000 anticipated, kickoff for the contest is set for 7 o'clock, CDT (Wisconsin time).

For the Packers, meanwhile, lightning now has struck twice in their last three Hall of Fame game appearances at Canton, Ohio's compact Fawcett Stadium.

This time around, Monday night's game with the Chiefs was initially delayed with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter when lightning flashed across the Canton sky, accompanied by rumbling thunder and a downpour.

Play was not to resume. With water standing in large puddles across the stadium turf, and rain still pelting down - mutually assuring treacherous footing for the players and contin..

Packers-Chiefs Recap

Turnovers, often costly, proved the Packers' undoing in their weather-shortened matchup with the Chiefs. They were the victims of three in the second quarter, a "trifecta" initiated when second-year running back Najeh Davenport fumbled at the Kansas City 9-yard line, after pulling in a Doug Pederson pass - and the Chiefs' Dexter McCleon recovered, ending the Packers' most significant threat of the evening.

Later in the quarter, KC cornerback Eric Warfield intercepted a Craig Nall pass at the Chiefs'40-yard line and, subsequently, the Chiefs' Lyle West waylaid a Nall throw at the Green Bay 33.

While the Packers found it a problem to activate the scoreboard, the Chiefs were not faring much better against Green Bay's revamped defense. Kansas City had to be content with three field goals - 32- and 51-yarders by the venerable, 42-year-old Morten Andersen in the first half and a 27-yarder by Jose Cortez in the third quarter.

Statistically, the Chiefs also had th..

Packers Sign TE Wesley Walls

Adding veteran leadership and proficiency at the tight end position, the Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with former Carolina Panther Wesley Walls as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Walls also considered Washington and Tampa Bay before ultimately opting to sign with the Green and Gold. The Panthers released the University of Mississippi product Feb. 26.

The 15th-year pro started 14 of the 15 games he played last season for Carolina. He recorded 19 receptions for 241 yards and led the team with 4 touchdown catches.

Walls, 37, has played in 182 career games with 115 starts for San Francisco (1989-93), New Orleans (1994-95) and Carolina (1996-2002). In his career, he has 430 catches for 5,069 yards and 53 touchdowns.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection is one of only four tight ends in NFL annals to log 400 receptions and 50 touchdowns. Since joining the Panthers in 1996, he leads all tight en..

Packers-Chiefs Press Box Notes

'SUPER' COINCIDENCE: It is a somewhat poetic coincidence that Hank Stram, who was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Sunday as a member of the HOF's 2003 class, should be so honored as the Packers take part in the Hall of Fame game against his former Kansas City Chiefs.

Looking back three decades, it was the voluble Stram who was the Packers' head-coaching opponent in the first Super Bowl at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967, a day on which the Packers prevailed over Stram's Chiefs, 35-10.

Though denied that distant afternoon, Stram subsequently experienced Super Bowl success, escorting his Chiefs to a 23-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in SB IV at Tulane Stadium in
New Orleans three years later.

SPEAKING OF THE 'Hall,' the Packers have been well represented in pro football's ultimate shrine ever since its origin. They saw four standard bearers enshrined among the charter class of 17 inductees when the HOF..

Packers Sign TE Luther Broughton As Free Agent

The Green Bay Packers have signed tight end Luther Broughton as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday.

A six-year NFL veteran, the 6-0, 255-pound Broughton has played in 62 career games with eight starts. Originally drafted by Philadelphia in the 5th round (155th overall) in 1997, he last played in 15 games for Carolina in 2001, making 2 receptions for 22 yards. Broughton signed as an unrestricted free agent with Chicago in 2002 (March 8) and became a vested veteran on Sept. 1. He was out of football during the 2002 season.

The Furman University alum spent most of his rookie year on Philadelphia's roster but was signed to Carolina's active roster from the Eagle's practice squad before the final week of the season. He spent the 1998 season with the Panthers, recording 6 catches for 142 yards.

Broughton was subsequently traded from Carolina to Philadelphia in 1999 (September 5), having his most productive pro season by posting a career-hig..

Packers Sign WR Rob Johnson As Free Agent

With injuries at wide receiver currently sidelining Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson and Jorg Heckenbach, the Green Bay Packers have signed first-year wideout Rob Johnson as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Friday.

The possessor of impressive size, the 6-3, 205-pound Johnson played for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League coming out of Western Illinois in 2002, catching 34 passes for 595 yards and 2 touchdowns. He later spent the last five weeks of the '02 NFL season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad. Johnson rejoined the Panthers in training camp last month and was placed on waivers July 29.

As a collegian, he attended graduate school at Western Illinois and posted 21 receptions for 373 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2001 after sitting out the 2000 season as a transfer from Northwestern.

Johnson, who joined the Packers on the practice field this morning, has been assigned jersey number 17.
