Returning their 53-man active roster to full strength, the Green Bay Packers have signed veteran cornerback Michael Hawthorne as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Monday.

The 6-3, 200-pound Hawthorne, a four-year professional, played in 28 games for the New Orleans Saints - with 7 starts - before being placed on waivers Sept. 9. He had played in all four preseason games for the Saints this year, posting 9 tackles at cornerback and one special teams stop, but had been inactive for the team's season opener at Seattle Sept. 7.

A sixth-round draft selection out of Purdue in 2000, Hawthorne earlier had started the first three games of the 2002 season at cornerback and played in six before suffering a season-ending left knee injury. Prior to being sidelined, he posted 36 tackles (29 unassisted), 1 interception, 6 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and 6 special teams tackles. His tackle total included a career-high 12 against the Chicago Bears Sept. 22 and 8-tackle efforts against Tampa Bay Sept. 8 and against the Packers Sept. 15.

As a collegian, Hawthorne started 23 of 33 games for Purdue's Boilermakers, recording 104 total tackles and posting 4 interceptions.

Hawthorne fills the roster vacancy created when rookie cornerback Chris Johnson was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a knee problem. He has been assigned jersey No. 27.
