Download The Week 4 Dope Sheet

Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

Here are some highlights from the Week 4 Dope Sheet:

MONDAY NIGHT: The Packers Monday bid for a franchise-record fifth consecutive win on Monday Night Football. From 1994-96, the team also won four straight.

* The Packers own the NFC's longest MNF appearance streak, 11 seasons (1993-2003). Minnesota (15, 1987-2001) and Dallas (11, 1991-2001) both ended long streaks in 2002. In the NFL, only Miami (14, 1990-2003) and Denver (12, 1992-2003) have longe..

Packers-Cardinals Recap

Simply put, the Packers let one get away from them Sunday amid Tempe's sweltering Sun Devil Stadium, where the temperature registered 102 degrees at kickoff, tying the record for the highest game-time reading the Green and Gold have encountered in their 84-year history.

It (102) matched the temperature at kickoff for the Packers' game against the Chargers at San Diego on Sept. 24, 1978, a contest Green Bay went on to win, 24-3, despite settling for 147 net yards on offense.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, while acknowledging that it had, indeed, been hot in Sun Devil Stadium, insisted that the heat was a non-factor in the Packers' 20-13 loss to the Cardinals.

"The heat had nothing to do with it," Sherman asserted. "They played better than we did. They made the plays and we didn't."

The biggest play the Cardinals made, as it turned out, was in the closing seconds of the game when, with the Packers at the Arizona 7-yard line, Arizona safety Dexter Jackso..

Packers-Bears Preview

Derailed in the desert, the Green Bay Packers (1-2) return to the familiar Midwest in search of artistic redemption, a quest they will pursue against their venerable neighborhood enemies, the 0-2 Chicago Bears, on ABC's "Monday Night Football" next Monday evening (Sept. 29).

Complicating the task of launching an early-season turnaround for the Packers will be the need to accomplish it against a unique competitive backdrop - the rededication of Chicago's Soldier Field, where the Bears will be primed to successfully "re-christen" their football home in their first appearance in the historic lakefront venue since the renovation process began early in 2002.

The kickoff for the 165th meeting between the NFL's classic rivals is set for 8 o'clock, CDT (Wisconsin time).

The Green and Gold, meanwhile, find themselves with a 1-2 record at the three-game mark in the regular season for the first time since 2000, having run afoul of the previously winless Cardinals in P..

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.
Here are some highlights from the Week 3 Dope Sheet:

* Josh Bidwell (248) needs to get off seven unblocked punts to establish the second-longest streak in team history, surpassing Donny Anderson's 254-punt streak (1967-71). David Beverly (274, 1977-80) owns the longest stretch.

Packers-Lions Recap

Mounting their most potent running game since Week One of the 2002 regular season - in company with a tightfisted defense - the Packers controlled both the football and the clock en route to a comfortable 31-6 conquest of the Detroit Lions in rain-drenched Lambeau Field over the weekend.

With running back Ahman Green exploding off right tackle on a 65-yard excursion on the second play from scrimmage, the Packers continued to dominate throughout the first half, expeditiously adding another touchdown on their second possession, one which saw quarterback Brett Favre preside over a 13-play, 59-yard drive he climaxed with a shovel pass to running back Tony Fisher, who lunged into the end zone from 5 yards out.

Detroit retaliated with a pair of second quarter field goals by Jason Hanson, "interrupted" by a 46-yard Ryan Longwell bullseye, but that was the extent of the Lions' scoreboard activity for the afternoon.

Packers-Cardinals Preview

Rebounding with authority from an opening day misadventure to square their record at 1-1, Green Bay's resurgent Packers next hit the road for the first time in the new season, invading Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix Sunday to take on the Arizona Cardinals (0-2).

Kickoff for the contest is 3:05, CDT (Wisconsin time).

Striking for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and coupling an explosive ground game with a smothering defense on a soggy, rain-soaked field, the Packers led all the way en route to a 31-6 victory over Detroit's visiting Lions Sunday, thus posting their first win in fully renovated Lambeau Field after losing their home opener to Minnesota there a week earlier.

The victory, which finds them a game back of the Vikings (2-0) and in a tie with the Lions for second place in the NFC North Division, likewise ended a two-game losing streak in "Lambeau" for the Packers.

Signed as a free agent February 3, 2003, he had been on the active roster during the preseason, before being placed on waivers August 26 in the NFL-mandated reduction to the 65-player limit, posting 3 unassisted tackles.

Packers Sign CB Michael Hawthorne

Returning their 53-man active roster to full strength, the Green Bay Packers have signed veteran cornerback Michael Hawthorne as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Monday.

The 6-3, 200-pound Hawthorne, a four-year professional, played in 28 games for the New Orleans Saints - with 7 starts - before being placed on waivers Sept. 9. He had played in all four preseason games for the Saints this year, posting 9 tackles at cornerback and one special teams stop, but had been inactive for the team's season opener at Seattle Sept. 7.

A sixth-round draft selection out of Purdue in 2000, Hawthorne earlier had started the first three games of the 2002 season at cornerback and played in six before suffering a season-ending left knee injury. Prior to being sidelined, he posted 36 tackles (29 unassisted), 1 interception, 6 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and 6 special teams tackles.
Packers-Lions Press Box Notes

Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman has a spotless coaching record against the Lions in Lambeau Field. He comes into this afternoon's encounter with a 3-0 home record against Detroit, the Green and Gold having posted victories over the Lions here in 2000 (26-13), 2001 (28-6) and 2002 (40-14).

The 40 points the Packers scored in last year's Lambeau Field win over the Lions are the most the Green and Gold have scored in a regular-(or post-) season game under Sherman to date.

Sherman owns a 5-1 overall record against Detroit.

-GOOD 'REBOUNDERS:' The Packers come into today's contest with the NFL's third-highest percentage following a loss, based on the past three seasons (2000-2002). They own an 11-3 record in the 14 games they have played following a loss, a .786 percentage. The Philadelphia Eagles own the best such record over that span, 12-1 (a .923 percentage), followed by the Denver Broncos with a 15-4 mark (.789).

The Green Bay Packers have placed first-year cornerback Chris Johnson on injured reserve with a knee injury, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Saturday.

Johnson, a seventh-round draft selection out of the University of Louisville in this year's NFL draft, played in Green Bay's first three preseason games (vs. Kansas City at Canton, Ohio, Aug. 4, at Atlanta, Aug. 9, and at Cleveland, Aug. 15) before suffering the injury during the practice week for the Aug. 23 game vs. Carolina that had sidelined him since.

Westphal led his team to 27-0 win last Friday over Kimberly High School, breaking Menasha's 27-game losing streak. The varsity squad is comprised of 57 players with 12 assistant coaches. This is Westphal's 15th season as a head coach on the high school level having coached at Neillsville-Granton High School (1989-2000) and began his tenure at Menasha, of the Fox Valley Association, in 2000.
Packers Re-Sign WRs Antonio Freeman, Chris Jackson

Moving to shore up an injury-ridden receiving corps, the Green Bay Packers have re-signed Antonio Freeman, the fifth-ranking receiver in team history, and fellow free agent Chris Jackson, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Freeman, who had previously combined with quarterback Brett Favre to forge one of the most productive passing combinations in NFL annals, had been out of football thus far in 2003 after spending the 2002 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, for whom he had caught 46 passes for 600 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Sherman put in the calls for Freeman and Jackson after seeing three receivers - Donald Driver (strained neck), Robert Ferguson (knee/ankle) and Karsten Bailey (hamstring) - go down with injuries in Sunday's opening day loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Packers-Vikings Recap

All other factors aside, a three-point first half ultimately spelled defeat for the Packers in their regular-season inaugural against the Vikings. Repeatedly squandering opportunities, they found themselves trailing Minnesota 20-3 at halftime. And, in the final analysis, it was too much to overcome, particularly with a productive Daunte Culpepper presiding over the Vikings offense and taking full advantage of Randy Moss' exceptional gifts.

The hulking Culpepper (6-4 and 264 pounds) completed 10 of 21 passes for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns - without an interception - as the Vikings built up that 17-3 halftime lead with the aid of 6 catches for 87 yards by Moss, who, unfortunately, chose the momentous occasion to put on a receiving "clinic." He closed out the afternoon with 9 receptions for 150 yards, a 16.7-yard average, and one touchdown.

Packers-Lions Preview

Toppled by the turnover and the Minnesota Vikings on opening day, the (0-1) Green Bay Packers' focus is on "ball control" as they prime to host another NFC North Division rival, the 1-0 Detroit Lions, in Lambeau Field Sunday (Sept. 14).

A season-ticket sellout (72,515), the kickoff is set for 12 noon, CDT, Wisconsin time.

Beset by five turnovers during the course of the afternoon, the Packers saw the long-awaited celebration of the "Rebirth of Lambeau Field" dampened by a 30-25 loss to the visiting Vikings, who stepped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead Sunday and weathered a 22-point second half comeback by the Packers to emerge with a 30-25 victory.

As might be expected, the outcome was not what a record "Lambeau" house of 70,505 had in mind for the historic occasion, graced by the presence of NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, on hand to congratulate the Packers and the faithful upon completion of a $295 million renovation of the team's 46-year-old home.

Bidwell Punting To Help Fight Cancer

Green Bay Packers punter Josh Bidwell will be punting to support The Angel Fund, Inc., during the 2003 season. Bidwell will donate $125 for every punt he puts inside the 20-yard line and the Packers organization will match Bidwell's donation.

The Angel Fund, Inc., in its first year of existence, was developed to assist with the medical expenses incurred by children of Brown County who are fighting cancer.

Bidwell is himself a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with testicular cancer in Sept. 1999, prior to his rookie season.

"The community supported me during the course of my cancer treatment," said Bidwell, who because he was 11 days away from his first regular-season game was ineligible for the NFLPA insurance program.

"I know the financial burden cancer treatment puts on a family. This is my way of saying thank you for the support while helping ease the financial burden of those who are in need."

Favre Focus -- Notes & Record Watch

Quarterback Brett Favre, traditionally productive on opening day, Sunday will be in quest of a ninth victory in 11 opening day assignments - and his third in a row.

Favre won his first two "kickoff" contests, 36-6 over the then-Los Angeles Rams at Milwaukee County Stadium in 1993, and 16-10, over the Minnesota Vikings in Lambeau Field in 1994 before slipping against the now-St. Louis Rams, 17-14, on opening day in 1995.

The NFL's three-time MVP then went on a four-game winning streak, escorting the Packers past Tampa Bay, 34-3, in 1996, over the Chicago Bears in 1997, 38-34, the Detroit Lions in 1998, 38-19, and the Oakland Raiders, in 1999, 28-24.

The New York Jets ended Favre's skein in 2000, 20-16, but he rebounded in 2001, leading the Green and Gold to a 28-6 win over Detroit, and followed by presiding at a 37-34 overtime decision of the Falcons last September.

Packers-Titans Recap

In the Packers' final preseason contest, the game turned out to be a sidelight to the evening's "entertainment," courtesy of the weather. Thunder and lightning, shortly accompanied by pouring rain which sent most of the 69,000-plus fans scurrying for cover under the stands, subsequently prompted Referee Bill Carollo to suspend the game with 2:05 remaining in the second quarter, following communication with NFL Executive Vice President Roger Goodell, who was on the phone to NFL Observer Jerry Seeman in the press box periodically throughout the evening.

After numerous and continuing discussions about whether to resume the game and, if so, whether to shorten the third and fourth quarters, it was finally decided to resume on the basis of 2:05 remaining in the second period and play full, 15-minute quarters thereafter. And, finally, at 11:01, the game was resumed and those fans who remained - an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 - emerged from the concourses and returned to the stands.

The dedication will honor Green Bay Packers President and CEO, Bob Harlan, who has been with the team for more than 30 years.

The Executive Committee of the Green Bay Packers Board of Directors decided to designate the main entrance plaza of Lambeau Field in Harlan's name.

"Without Bob, this redevelopment would not have been possible," stated Executive Committee Member Don Harden. "He worked so hard on the project, even going door to door during the referendum to make sure Brown County residents understood the issues and the need for approving the referendum to help pay for the redevelopment project."
