Lomira's Hatlen Named Packers High School Coach Of The Week

Randy Hatlen, head coach of the Lomira Lions, has been selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week for Week 8, the Packers announced Friday.

Hatlen earns the award not only for winning on the field, but also for helping his team overcome adversity. The kind occurring with the passing of a player.

Patrick Geelan was a Lomira junior who played offensive and defensive line. He died last Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the hospital among family and friends. Geelan reportedly had a stroke after collapsing on the field the previous Saturday during Lomira's game against Winnebago Lutheran Academy.

School officials, including Hatlen, met and decided to play the final regular-season game on Thursday, Oct. 23, with support from the Geelan family.

With a game wrapped up in emotion and a short week of practice, Hatlen led his team to a 26-9 win over Laconia, locking up a playoff berth in the process.

With 1:09 left in the game, Hatlen repla..

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.
SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: Sunday Night Football became a reality in 1987, when ESPN purchased rights to launch the prime-time series. A landmark in television history, it was the NFL's debut on the cable medium.

* From 1987-97, for 11 years, ESPN held the Sunday night slot for only the last half of each season. In 1998, the network began airing Sunday night games exclusively, virtually every week.

Packers-Vikings Preview

Coming off a mid-season bye intent upon shaking a two-game losing streak, the Green Bay Packers (3-4) invade the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome Sunday night to take on the 6-1 Minnesota Vikings, leaders of the NFC North Division.

Kickoff for the nationally televised contest (ESPN), a sellout (64,121), is set for 7:30 CST (Wisconsin time).

The Packers, hoping to make inroads upon the Vikings' 3-game lead in the division race, will be seeking their first Metrodome victory since 2000, when the Green and Gold prevailed 33-28, in Mike Sherman's first year as Green Bay's head coach.

They also will be striving to square the season series, Minnesota having posted a 30-25 win in their initial '03 meeting at Lambeau Field Sept. 7.

While the Packers were taking the weekend off, the Vikings were seeing their nine-game winning streak - dating back to the last three games of the '02 season - come to an end at the hands of the New York Giants, 29-17. Minnesota had ..

LS Rob Davis To Be Recognized By Alma Mater

Rob Davis, now in his seventh season as the long snapper for the Green Bay Packers, has been named to the Shippensburg University Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2003.

Davis was a standout for the Red Raiders from 1988 to 1992 and a key member of Shippensburg's NCAA Division II tournament team in 1991.

As a four-year starter (1988-89, 1991-92) at defensive tackle for Shippensburg, Davis finished as the school's all-time leading tackler (353) among defensive linemen and tied the team's career record with 34 tackles for loss.

A first-team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference selection in both his junior and senior seasons, Davis set the school's single-season sacks record with 13 his junior year.

As a free agent in 1997, Davis -- who holds a degree in criminal justice/law enforcement -- signed with the Packers mid-season and handled all long-snapping duties the last seven regular season games, beginning with a win over St. Louis (Nov. 9) as well as..

Arrowhead is now 6-2 overall, most recently beating Pius XI, 56-6. There are 82 players on the varsity roster with 13 assistant coaches. Taraska has taught physical education since 1975.

Packers Look To Improve In Bye Week

It may be more blessed to give than to receive but, as far as Mike Sherman is concerned, enough is enough.

It, in essence, was the central message which emerged Monday from his weekly appraisal of the Packers for the media, this one coming in the wake of a 34-24 loss to the St. Louis Rams, a misadventure punctuated by four Green Bay "giveaways" that were major contributors (17 points) to the unhappy result.

"We're losing the turnover rate at too high a frequency right now," Sherman acknowledged, then added in succinct summation, "We're not getting enough and we're giving too many away.

"And that doesn't work, no matter how talented your team is. We can fix everything, but as long as we continue to turn over and not get 'em back, it doesn't matter what kind of team you put on the field...or who's on the field...whether you're rushing the quarterback or not...whether your running game works or it doesn't work.

"When you turn the ball over, you don't ..

Employment Rises At Newly-Renovated Lambeau Field

With the November opening of Paparazzi Pizzeria and Frozen in Time Ice Cream shop as the final year-round dining elements of Lambeau Field Atrium, the $295 million stadium redevelopment project has created an estimated 500 full and part-time jobs at Lambeau Field and its related businesses.

Those new jobs are in addition to the thousands of jobs for workers over nearly three years of construction as the historic 1957 stadium was transformed into the National Football League's first "retro" football stadium and destination tourism venue.

It all adds up to good economic development news for northeast Wisconsin, according to Packers President & CEO Bob Harlan.

"Obviously, the expansion of our seating capacity means we need additional workers on game day and home game weekends," Harlan said. "But it goes far beyond that. With the Atrium, we now have a year-round destination point with special event facilities and seven restaurants, as well as the expanded Pack..

The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive end Michael Landry to the team's practice squad, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

A 6-3, 301-pound Southern University alumnus, Landry originally was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2002. Waived Aug. 26, 2002, he returned to Kansas City as a member of the Chiefs' practice squad for the final week of the 2002 regular season.

Later re-signed by the Chiefs as a reserve/future, he was allocated to the Scottish Claymores of the NFL Europe League for the 2003 season and earned all-NFLEL honors after finishing fourth in the league with 6.5 quarterback sacks. He also posted 31 tackles (24 solo) and was credited with 3 passes defensed while playing in all of the team's 10 games, with 9 starts.
Imagine walking through the tunnel that leads to the playing field at historic Lambeau Field, the same tunnel that leads Brett Favre, Donald Driver and Darren Sharper to their workplace on Sunday.
The Green Bay Packers have placed veteran defensive end Joe Johnson on injured reserve and signed defensive lineman Terdell Sands from the practice squad to replace him on the team's 53-man active roster, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

Johnson suffered a tear of his right quadriceps tendon in last Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs and has been lost for the season, according to Sherman, who said the 10-year veteran will need to undergo remedial surgery "at some point."

Signed to the practice squad Sept. 2, he remained there until being released Sept. 16. He subsequently was re-signed to the practice squad Oct. 1, remaining there until being re-signed to the active roster today.

Packers-Rams Preview

Having had a two-game winning streak abruptly ended in an improbable overtime struggle, the Green Bay Packers (3-3) take to the road in search of a fourth victory, invading St. Louis Sunday to meet the Rams (3-2).

Kickoff for the contest, at the Edward Jones Dome (66,000), is set for 12 noon, CDT (Wisconsin time).

To a stunned, capacity house of 70,407 witnesses, the weekend's ultimate result was "improbable" because the Packers had appeared to be comfortably out front of the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs at the end of three periods (31-14). But the surprisingly resilient Missourians suddenly accumulated 20 fourth quarter points, forcing the game into overtime, then won it in sudden death, 40-34, by way of a 51-yard pass to wide receiver Eddie Kennison at 6:18 of the overtime. The Chiefs thereby dealt the Packers only their second Lambeau Field loss in the last two seasons.

The defeat, the Packers' first overtime loss since 1995, dropped the Green and Gold..

Packers-Chiefs Recap

For the Packers, everything appeared to be right with the world as the fourth quarter began Sunday. They had already scored on five of their first seven positions, amassing the imposing total of 350 yards of offense, and were the possessors of a 17-point lead, making a third straight victory look like a reasonably sure thing at that juncture.

But the football fates began to turn on them early in the final period when the Chiefs' gifted returner, Dante Hall, largely silenced by the Packers' vigilant coverage previously, staged a 32-yard runback of a Josh Bidwell punt to give Kansas City enviable field position at the Green Bay 42-yard line.

The Chiefs were in the end zone in 6 plays, Priest Holmes hitting right end for the final yard and the score. But, after Morten Andersen's conversion, the Packers were still up by 10. And, the Green and Gold immediately strung three first downs together and appeared en route to the end zone.

Packers Visit DePere's Notre Dame Elementary & Middle School

The Packers Women's Association 17th Annual Food Drive for Paul's Pantry raised $12,541 and collected 32,400 food items at the Oct. 5 Packers-Seahawks game, but that wasn't all.

Approximately 30 area schools held their own in-school food drives, in conjunction with the Lambeau Field effort, which collected 44,000 food items and Younkers donated $4,000 to the cause, a portion of the proceeds from the department store's grand opening preview sale shopping night, Aug. 8, at its new Oneida St. location.

Thus, the grand total collected this year amounts to $16,541 and 76,400 food items.

Notre Dame Elementary & Middle School in De Pere, Wis., took first place honors among the area schools involved, collecting roughly 18 pounds of food per each of Notre Dame's 357 students -- 6,431 pounds of food overall.

As a reward for the students' hard work, several Packers made an appearance at the school Tuesday.

Packers Re-Sign DT Larry Smith As Free Agent, WR Swinton Waived

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed veteran defensive tackle Larry Smith as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Thursday.

Smith, a fifth-year professional previously had been signed Aug. 17 and played in two preseason games - against Carolina Aug. 23 and Tennessee Aug. 28 - before being released Sept. 1 in the team's final, NFL-mandated roster reduction for the regular season.

The 6-5, 310-pound Florida State alumnus, originally a second-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 1999, had played in 51 games for the Jaguars over four seasons, with seven starts, before being placed on waivers Aug. 13.

Smith, earning a starting assignment early in the '02 season after playing in a regular rotation at defensive tackle over his first three years, started the first three games and made a career-high 6 tackles in his third start, then suffered an ankle injury and lost his starting job to rookie John Henderson.

Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

Packers-Seahawks Recap

With quarterback Brett Favre in classic form, the offense was a study in optimum efficiency as the Packers put on a crowd-pleasing clinic in their own backyard en route to knocking the Seattle Seahawks from the unbeaten ranks.

Things began innocently enough, the Packers punting the ball after just one first down on their initial possession, Josh Bidwell closing out the game's opening series with a 25-yard punt. Bidwell was not to find it necessary to punt again until only 8 minutes remained in the fourth quarter and the situation was well in hand.

In the productive interim, the virtually flawless Favre guided the Packers to consecutive touchdowns on their next five possessions, a feat seldom seen on any football field.

The "show" began with a turnover, defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt forcing a Shaun Alexander fumble and Marques Anderson recovering at the Seahawks' 49-yard line. Favre had the Packers in the end zone in 1 minute, 55 seconds and 5 plays, the fi..

Packers-Chiefs Preview

Coming off one of their most efficient and explosive performances in recent seasons, fashioned in toppling the Seattle Seahawks from the unbeaten ranks, the Green Bay Packers (3-2) will have little time to luxuriate in the memory.

Having disposed of the Seahawks (35-13), they must quickly focus on another unbeaten opponent, Kansas City's 5-0 Chiefs, who invade Lambeau Field next Sunday (Oct. 12).

Kickoff for the contest, a customary season-ticket sellout (72,515) is set for 12 noon, CDT (Wisconsin time).

The Chiefs come to Titletown after preserving their spotless record with a cliff-hanging, 24-23 win over Denver and taking full possession of the AFC West Division lead in dealing the Broncos their first loss over the weekend.

The Packers, winning back-to-back games for the first time this season, meanwhile remained within two games of the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings, who parlayed their record to 5-0 with a 39-26 road win over the Atlanta ..

Explanation of 'Leaping' Rule

With 3:57 remaining in overtime of Monday Night's game between the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Colts attempted a game-winning 40-yard field goal.

The attempt missed, but Buccaneers defensive end Simeon Rice was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play for leaping.

Rule 12, Section 3, Article 2 of the 2003 Official Playing Rules of the National Football League (page 86) defines the unsportsmanlike conduct/leaping penalty as follows:

"Clearly running forward and leaping in an obvious attempt to block a field goal, or try-kick after touchdown and landing on players, unless the leaping player was originally lined up within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped."

Rice lined up approximately four yards behind the line of scrimmage, ran forward, leaped in an attempt to block the kick, and illegally landed on a teammate.

Following the penalty, the ball was spotted half the distance to the ..

Marshall's four-game suspension for substance abuse had been lifted Sept. 30 and the third-year professional had been under a Commissioner's exemption in the interim - until his activation this afternoon.

A third-round draft selection in 2001, the 26-year-old Miami native had played in 30 games over his first two seasons, with one start, posting 13 tackles. As a collegian, he was a two-year starter at Oklahoma and served as team captain for the national champion Sooners in 2000.

Running back Ahman Green of the Green Bay Packers was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for games played the fourth week of the 2003 season (September 28-29), the NFL announced Wednesday.

Green helped the Packers to a 38-23 road win over the NFC North rival Chicago Bears on Monday night, rushing for a career-high 176 yards on 19 carries, including a pair of touchdown runs.

The 6-7, 337-pound Sands, signed as a free agent Feb. 3, 2003, had been on the active roster during the preseason, posting 3 unassisted tackles, before being placed on waivers Aug. 26 in the NFL-mandated reduction to the 65-player limit.
Search Underway For Sixth Packers FAN Hall Of Fame Honoree

The Green Bay Packers, the first professional football team to have its own hall of fame, enhanced that distinction in 1998 by establishing a Packers FAN Hall of Fame.

It was founded, in conjunction with the Packers Hall of Fame, for the purpose of annually honoring a devout and longtime Packers fan.

As has been the case each of the past five years, fans have been asked to nominate themselves for recognition by a selection committee. The late Mel Knoke of Appleton was chosen as the inaugural enshrinee in the FAN Hall of Fame. The 91-year-old Knoke, who died between the time of his election and enshrinement, was honored posthumously at the 1999 Packers Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, held March 6.

Louis Gardipee of Black River Falls, Wis., Ed Jablonski of Wausau, Wis., Paul Mazzoleni of Green Bay and Wanda Boggs of Brookfield, Wis., were the second, third, fourth and fifth honorees, respectively.
Packers-Seahawks Preview

Stimulated by sight of their arch enemies, the Green Bay Packers (2-2) rained on the Chicago Bears' long-awaited rededication "parade" to regain parity in the NFC North Division over the weekend, departing Chicago's renovated Soldier Field with a 38-23 victory in the national spotlight of "Monday Night Football."

From the competitive perspective, it was a good thing they did. The formidable Seattle Seahawks, undefeated (3-0) leaders of the NFC West, next are due to arrive in Green Bay's Lambeau Field Sunday (Oct. 5) for an interdivisional showdown with the Green and Gold.

Kickoff for the intriguing matchup, which will find Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman opposing a returning Mike Holmgren on the coaching lines for the first time, has been set for 12 noon, CDT. The game, as per custom, is a season-ticket sellout (72,515).

By way of their workmanlike victory over the Bears - a conquest which dimmed a historic evening for a capacity crowd of 61,500 getting ..

Here are some highlights from the Week 5 Dope Sheet:

Packers-Bears Recap

Clearly on a mission, the Packers swept to a 17-0 first quarter lead over the Bears in their 165th collision, leaving little doubt about their intentions on this historic occasion, highlighted by the rededication of renovated Soldier Field - in use for football purposes for the first time in more than a year.

Then, after the Bears pulled to within a touchdown in the fourth quarter (24-16), the Green and Gold sent another resounding message, quarterback Brett Favre driving home two more scores, one on a 9-yard pass to wideout Javon Walker and the other on a 1-yard throw to tight end Bubba Franks to establish a 38-16 lead with only 4:21 remaining.

The Bears subsequently settled for a final, consolation TD by way of a one-yard Kordell Stewart run, capping a 13-play, 68-yard drive.

The Packers' early impetus came from an explosive getaway by running back Ahman Green, who broke off left tackle on the sixth play of the game, veered to his right and streaked 60 ya..
