The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran linebacker T.J. Slaughter, a former Jacksonville Jaguar, as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot, 233-pound Slaughter, a third-round draft selection out of Southern Mississippi in 2000, had played in 42 games for Jacksonville, with 29 starts, before being placed on waivers Oct. 28.

"Slaughter is a physical linebacker who can play 'Mike' or 'Will,'" Sherman said. "I am hopeful that he also will impact our special teams. There were some questions raised about T.J.'s character at the time he left Jacksonville. I researched his background extensively and all reports have come back positively. He will have a fresh start here in Green Bay, which I am hopeful he will take full advantage of."

A fourth-year professional who started games at both middle and weak-side linebacker for the Jaguars, Slaughter amassed 325 tackles during his Jacksonville tenure, including 108 in his debut season, thus becoming only the fourth player in Jaguars history to make more than 100 tackles as a rookie.

The 26-year-old Birmingham, Ala., native started a career-high 11 games in 2002 and closed out the season with 106 tackles, 47 of them solo. He also recovered 2 fumbles.

Slaughter played in six games, with three starts, this season before being waived, posting 19 total tackles, 17 of them unassisted.

A three-year starter and five-year letterman as a collegian at Southern Mississippi, he led the team in tackles as a junior and senior, recording 10 or more tackles in nine of 11 games as a junior and in seven games as a senior, his production including two 20-tackle games as a junior.

The newcomer, whose full name is Tavaris Jermell Slaughter, will join the Packers on the practice field Wednesday. He has been assigned jersey No. 57.

Defensive tackle Terdell Sands was waived to make room for Slaughter on the active roster. In another transaction, the team released tight end Tony Donald from the practice squad.
