Packers-Lions Press Box Notes

MIKE SHERMAN IS in pursuit of a sixth consecutive victory in the series today - and a seventh win in eight encounters with the Lions as Green Bay's head coach. In 2000, his first season as the Packers' field leader, he split with Detroit, then scored a sweep in both 2001 and 2002 and followed that parlay by leading Green Bay to a 31-6 win in the first meeting of the current season.

FAVRE 'JOINS' GREGG IN RECORD BOOK: Quarterback Brett Favre today takes his remarkable durability streak to a new level. He will play in his 187th consecutive game and thus tie the Packers' all-time record, established by Hall of Famer Forrest Gregg (1956, 1958-70).

Favre launched his streak against the Buccaneers in Tampa Sept. 13, 1992, in the Packers' second game of the season, seeing action in a relief role in the second half.

He replaced an injured Don Majkowski in a game against Cincinnati the following week (Sept. 20), pulling out a 24-23 victory with a 35-y..

Green Named NFC Offensive Player Of The Week

Running back Ahman Green of the Green Bay Packers is the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for games played the 12th week of the 2003 season, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Green enjoyed a record-setting afternoon as the Packers improved to 6-5 with a 20-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field. The victory kept the Packers one game behind NFC North-leading Minnesota and gives Green Bay a winning record heading into its final five games.

Green carried 27 times for 154 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry against a 49ers defense that entered the game fourth in the league against the run, surrendering 86.9 yards per game. He played an instrumental role in helping Green Bay control the clock and move the chains, earning a 34:43 to 25:17 edge in time of possession. Green had six carries of at least 10 yards, including a key 24-yard scamper that set up a field goal to end the first half, giving the Pack a 17-3 advantage.

Packers Re-Sign WR Frank Rice To Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed wide receiver Frank Rice to the team's practice squad, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

Rice, 6-0 and 180 pounds, originally signed with Tampa Bay coming out of Colorado State in 2001. He subsequently was injured in training camp and spent the '01 season on injured reserve. Waived April 17, 2002, he signed with Denver and went on to spend the '02 season on the Broncos' practice squad.

Later signed as a reserve/future, Rice was with the Broncos through training camp and the preseason this year, playing in all four preseason games and catching 3 passes for 73 yards, a 24.3-yard average, before being released in the team's roster reduction for the NFL's regular season, 53-player limit Aug. 31.

Rice was signed to the Packers' practice squad for the first time Sept. 9 and later released Sept. 30.

A four-year letterman at Colorado State as a collegian, Rice caught 83 passes for 1,258 yards (a 15.3-yard av..

Packers-49ers Recap

For the Packers, the running game has been a surging constant since the third week of the season. And it was there again Sunday, Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher amassing the imposing total of 243 yards - the team's second-best effort of the season - behind what has to rank as one of the premier offensive lines in team history.

But there was another, complementary force much in evidence this time as the Green and Gold posted a second straight victory - a smothering defense which held a potent San Francisco offense to less than 200 net yards all afternoon, statistically the defenders' first such effort of the season.

"It was our best performance against a quality offense this season," Defensive Coordinator Ed Donatell said in post-game praise of his defense, which held the Prospectors to 192 yards overall - just 73 rushing - and without a touchdown until only 1:33 remained in the third quarter.

Offensively, things had a familiar look - with one e..

Download The Week 13 Dope Sheet

Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature in their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

Here are some highlights from the Week 13 Dope Sheet:

FAVRE WILL TIE GREGG: Ironman Brett Favre on Thursday will tie Forrest Gregg for the longest consecutive games-played streak in Packers history, 187. What's more, after this week, only two men will have played more games in a Packers uniform than Favre, Bart Starr (196) and Ray Nitschke (190).

NO REST: The Packers, who also played Monday night Nov. 10, are playing four games in 18 days. No..

Packers-Lions Preview

Continuing to hang their collective hat on a punishing ground game, with dramatic results, the Green Bay Packers (6-5) stayed tight on the heels of NFC North Division leader Minnesota with a 20-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers (5-6) in Lambeau Field over the weekend.

The surging Green and Gold thus take a two-game winning streak on the road in a Thanksgiving Day invasion of Detroit's Ford Field (Nov. 27) for a nationally televised encounter with the (3-8) Lions, division rivals.

Kickoff for the contest, which will find the Packers and Lions clashing for the 147th time in a series dating back to 1930, is set for 11:37, CST (Wisconsin time).

While the Packers were disposing of the 49ers, Minnesota (7-4) was clinging to its one-game advantage over Green Bay, pulling away in the stretch to turn back the Lions, 24-14, the victory ending a four-game losing streak for the Vikings.

Harlan Elected To Green Bay Packers Hall Of Fame

Robert E. "Bob" Harlan, who has led the Green Bay Packers to professional football's heights during a 14-year tenure as the team's president and chief executive officer, has been elected to the Packers Hall of Fame in recognition of his major and multiple contributions to the NFL's most storied franchise, HOF President Michael B. Gage announced Friday.

Harlan, who will be the sole inductee, will be enshrined during the 2004 Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, to be held in the Lambeau Field Atrium Saturday night, July 17, 2004.

When Harlan assumed his current responsibilities in June of 1989, the Packers' then incoming CEO promptly established an ambitious agenda for himself and the organization, announcing, "I want to move this franchise ahead in every area."

In the interim, the genial Iowan has more than fulfilled that commitment. Under his visionary leadership, first exemplified when he brought in Ron Wolf as executive vice president/general manager in 1991 w..

Packers-Buccaneers Recap

"It was 98-and-a-half (yards), actually," Mike Sherman said, with just the hint of a smirk, as he began to address the media at his post-game press conference outside the visitors' locker room early Sunday evening.

"It doesn't," he added, "get much longer than that."

(For the record, the Tampa Bay statistical crew officially listed the drive as 98 yards in length, starting at the Green Bay 2.)

Sherman, of course, was referring to the classic drive quarterback Brett Favre and his offense had brilliantly executed to carry the day.

And, invariably precise, the Packers' general manager and head coach was on the money. The Green and Gold took possession of the football at their own one-and-a-half-yard line.

Technicalities aside, what followed was a slight rarely seen on any gridiron.

Sherman, Tom Rossley and the Packers' offensive brain trust proceeded to utilize what has become a dominant running game to both control the clock and adv..

"Even" (or .500, for that matter) seldom has looked so good...

Now 5-5 in the wake of a critical road victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Green Bay Packers have forged to within one game of NFC North-leading Minnesota and materially enhanced their playoff chances, the 6-4 Vikings having lost their fourth straight in the productive weekend process.

Thus reinforced, the Packers also will enjoy home field advantage when they continue their pursuit of playoff status this weekend, hosting the San Francisco 49ers in an inter-divisional matchup at Lambeau Field Sunday afternoon (Nov. 23).

Kickoff for the contest, a customary season ticket sellout (72,515), is set for 12 noon, CST (Wisconsin time).

It will be the first of two games within a five-day span for the Green and Gold, who invade Detroit's Ford Field a week from Thursday (Nov. 27) for a Thanksgiving Day encounter with the Lions.

Barnett Named NFC Player Of The Week

Linebacker Nick Barnett of the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles and punt returner Bobby Engram of the Seattle Seahawks are the NFC Defensive, Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the eleventh week of the 2003 season (November 9-10), the NFL announced Wednesday.

Barnett earned honors for his play in the Packers' 20-13 road-win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay's first win at Tampa Bay since 1997. The victory helped the Pack even their record at 5-5 and pull to within one game of the 6-4 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North.

Barnett led the team with 10 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed in the win, as the Packers held Tampa Bay to a season-low 131 passing yards and one for 11 (9.0 percent) on third down conversion attempts. Barnett leads the team with 100 tackles this season and is the first Packer rookie to reach the century mark since Brian Noble in 1985.

Packers-Eagles Recap

Even a record rushing performance by Ahman Green couldn't make the Packers' latest appearance on ABC's "Monday Night Football" a success.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman succinctly summed up the Packers' unhappy fate on the prime time showcase, presented on a cold and rain-swept evening.

"We didn't do what we needed to do at the end of the game," he said "to keep them out of the end zone."

The Packers had been out front, 14-10, the result of a 45-yard scoring run by the runaway Green, when they punted to the Eagles with 2:43 remaining in the game, Philadelphia taking over at its own 35-yard line.

To the Green and Gold's dismay, the Eagles were in the Green Bay end zone in the span of 2 minutes and 16 seconds, quarterback Donovan McNabb finding wide receiver Todd Pinkston in the left corner of the end zone with a 6-yard scoring strike.

After placekicker David Akers added Philadephia's 17th and final point and Antonio Chatman had returned the sub..

Packers-Buccaneers Preview

The Green Bay Packers (4-5), having permitted a glittering opportunity to elude them, next face the challenge of furthering themselves in the NFC North Division race on the road - in a matchup against the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5) next Sunday (Nov. 16).

Kickoff for the inter-divisional contest in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium, a sellout (65,657) is set for 3:15, CST (Wisconsin time).

The stage had been opportunely set for the runner-up Packers to trim the pacesetting Minnesota's lead to a mere one game over them in the NFC North race when the Vikings lost their third in a row a day earlier.

But, after allowing the Philadelphia Eagles to leave Lambeau Field with a last-minute, 17-14 victory on ABC's "Monday Night Football," they find themselves two games to the rear of the Vikings (6-3) in the division.

They also are aware the Buccaneers are not likely to be overly hospitable, since the Floridians - like the Packers -..

SCHEDULE QUIRK: These teams can't seem to avoid one another. The league separated the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the '02 season, moving Tampa Bay out of the Packers' division. That hasn't kept the teams from playing, though. The Packers not only play the Bucs two consecutive years (2002-03), but they also travel to Tampa Bay in back-to-back seasons, something the league took strides..

Packers Sign LB T.J. Slaughter As Free Agent; Waive DT Terdell Sands

The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran linebacker T.J. Slaughter, a former Jacksonville Jaguar, as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot, 233-pound Slaughter, a third-round draft selection out of Southern Mississippi in 2000, had played in 42 games for Jacksonville, with 29 starts, before being placed on waivers Oct. 28.

"Slaughter is a physical linebacker who can play 'Mike' or 'Will,'" Sherman said. "I am hopeful that he also will impact our special teams. There were some questions raised about T.J.'s character at the time he left Jacksonville. I researched his background extensively and all reports have come back positively. He will have a fresh start here in Green Bay, which I am hopeful he will take full advantage of."

A fourth-year professional who started games at both middle and weak-side linebacker for the Jaguars, Slaughter amassed 325 tackles during his Jacksonville tenure, including 108 in his debut season,..

NFL, Packers Commit $100,000 Grant To Build Football Field At Bradley Tech

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School (Bradley Tech), the first new Milwaukee public high school to be built in the last 30 years, will now have a football field, thanks in part to a $100,000 grant from the National Football League's Grassroots program.

The grant, announced today by the NFL and the Green Bay Packers, is included in $1.5 million in new awards that the program is making to community groups for field rehabilitation in 11 cities.

The central city high school -- it admitted its first class in September -- replaced the 95-year-old Milwaukee Tech High School, which had a great athletic reputation.

The new school was built on the athletic fields of the old school, which is slated for demolition. Once it's gone, the new football field will be built on the site of the former high school building. Since construction on the new school began three years ago, student athletic teams have been bused to other locations for sporting even..

The Green Bay Packers again will be teaming up with the Salvation Army for its annual bell ringing kettle collection and this year's effort will include the help of six Brown County students, chosen from an essay contest on volunteerism.

Interested students currently in sixth through eighth grade at a Brown County school are asked to submit a short essay, 250 words or less, on why volunteering is important. Six essays will be chosen and their respective authors will ring the Salvation Army bell at one of six locations in the Green Bay area while a Packers player signs autographs.

"We expanded this year's involvement with the Salvation Army, based in part on last year's success with Bubba Franks," said Cathy Dworak, Packers manager of community relations. "We're looking forward to getting more players involved.
It is the third tour of duty in Green Bay for the 6-3, 245-pound Western State (Colo.) alumnus, initially signed as a free agent Jan. 7, 2003.
Packers-Vikings Recap

The Packers mounted their most productive running game in 18 years -- and, in the final analysis, needed it -- to dispose of the Minnesota Vikings in their Sunday night visit to the Minneapolis Metrodome.

Serving notice with an 18-yard bolt around right end by running back Ahman Green on the very first play from scrimmage, the Packers amassed 261 rushing yards -- their best production since Oct. 6, 1985, when they churned out 285 yards on the ground en route to a 43-10 victory over the Detroit Lions.

On this explosive occasion, they put on an impressive display with a brisk, up-tempo modus operandi, averaging an offensive snap with 22 seconds remaining on the play clock while rolling up 317 yards overall in the first half and closing out the evening with a total of 451 - their best performance of the season to date.

Despite these offensive heroics, the Packers were not able to enjoy a substantial lead -- 10 points, in this case (30-20) -- until less than 3 ..

Packers-Eagles Preview

Surging back into the race by winning the game they had to win, the Green Bay Packers (4-4) will enjoy prime time for the second week in a row, hosting the formidable Philadelphia Eagles (5-3) on ABC's "Monday Night Football" next Monday (Nov. 10) while continuing their pursuit of upward mobility in the NFC's North Division.

Kickoff for the contest, a customary season ticket sellout (72,515), is set for 8 o'clock CST (Wisconsin time).

With ESPN's "Sunday Night Football" providing a national showcase, the Packers adroitly turned their season around over the weekend, dispatching the pacesetting Vikings, 30-27, and ascending to within two games of the division-leading Purple Gang, now 6-2 after back-to-back losses.

Equally important, they pulled abreast of Minnesota in intra-division record at 3-1, measurably enhancing their playoff potential. (A loss, in dark contrast, would have left them 4 games back of the Vikings with 8 games to play and a game to the rea..

Packers Claim DT Grady Jackson On Waivers, Rod Walker To Injured Reserve

The Green Bay Packers have claimed veteran defensive tackle Grady Jackson on waivers from the New Orleans Saints, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

The Packers have placed defensive tackle Rod Walker on injured reserve to make room for the 6-2, 330-pound Jackson on the team's 53-man active roster. Walker sat out Sunday night's game against Minnesota with a knee injury suffered in the St. Louis game October 19.

Jackson, a seven-year veteran who played his first five seasons for Oakland, started 47 of 82 games in his first six seasons, posting 269 tackles, 25 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 12 passes defensed.

In 2002, his initial season with New Orleans, Jackson led the Saints' interior linemen in tackles with (55), sacks (5.5) and fumble recoveries (3). He had six of those tackles (all solo) against the Packers in their Sept. 15, 2002, invasion of the Louisiana Superdome.

Thus far this season, Jackson had registered 30 tackles and 3.5 qua..

Packers-Vikings Press Box Notes

THE PACKERS' APPEARANCE here today essentially marks the 20th "anniversary" of their very first visit to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, which occurred on Nov. 3, 1983, a day that saw them post a 29-21 victory over the Vikings, then under the direction of the legendary Bud Grant.

The Metrodome had opened a year earlier but the Packers' debut in the new indoor venue was delayed a season because the 1982 campaign was interrupted by a 57-day player strike and, in the process, the Packers' initial scheduled visit was expunged by the work stoppage.

QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE, with a win tonight, can reach a new level among the premier field generals in NFL history. A victory would pad his career total to 119 and tie him with the storied Johnny Unitas for fourth place on professional football's career list of most prolific winners.

Immediately ahead: Fran Tarkenton, third all-time with 125 victories. John Elway is the leader with 148, followed by Dan..
