Restoring both the secondary and the roster to full strength, the Green Bay Packers have signed former St. Louis Ram cornerback James Whitley as a free agent, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

Whitley, a 5-11, 190-pound, second-year professional replaces linebacker T.J. Slaughter on the team's 53-man active roster, returning it to full strength. Slaughter was placed on waivers Tuesday.

Whitley, the only street free agent to make the Rams' opening day roster in 2002, made an appreciable impact on both defense and special teams, finishing the season with 38 tackles, 3 quarterback sacks, 3 passes defensed and one fumble recovery -- despite being inactive for the first three games of the season.

The 24-year-old University of Michigan alumnus also finished fourth on the club in special teams tackles with 13.

Hampered by a foot injury, a sprain incurred in mini-camp, Whitley spent training camp and the first six weeks of the current season on physically unable to perform status. He made his first regular-season appearance against the Packers in St. Louis Oct. 19 and played in three games overall, posting 2 special teams tackles, before being placed on waivers Dec. 2.

A four-year letterman for the Wolverines, Whitley originally was signed by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 2001 and played in 14 games, with five starts, registering 27 tackles and 4 special teams stops.

Whitley, who joined the Packers on the practice field today, has been assigned jersey No. 25.
