Honoring America, New Flags Fly Above Lambeau Field

In keeping with the arrival of Memorial Day, two new American flags now fly above Lambeau Field.

The impressively sized flags, 15 feet by 25 feet, were raised Friday at 1 p.m.

Located on top of the stadium's indoor club seats on the north end of the facility, the new flags are the culmination of the desire to improve Lambeau Field's honoring of America, an effort first discussed last fall.

"Once the Lambeau Field redevelopment project was complete and we had our first games in the stadium last fall, we realized the old flag and flagpole appeared a bit small compared to the larger size of the new facility," said Packers President and CEO Bob Harlan. "We needed something more prominent to appropriately honor our country and decided to upgrade that component of the stadium. We also heard from a few fans that they had trouble locating the flag during the anthem, so this will definitely help in that area, too.

Packers Foundation Announces 2004 Grant Recipients

The Green Bay Packers Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 to 57 civic and charitable groups throughout the state of Wisconsin in its annual distribution of funds, Carl Kuehne, chairman of the Foundation committee, announced Thursday.

With these disbursements, totaling $119,200, the Foundation has distributed $1,227,726 for charitable purposes since it was established in 1986 by Judge Robert J. Parins, then president of the Packers Corporation, "as a vehicle to assure continued contributions to charity."

The financial breakdown of the Foundation's contributions discloses that 27 grants - aggregating $73,000 - were awarded to Brown County organizations, among them grants to the YWCA, Ribbon of Hope, Neville Public Museum and Boys & Girls Club.

Additional grants, totaling $46,200, were made to 30 other groups around the state, among them Esperanza Unida, Repairers of the Breach, Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse, Great Lakes Hemophilia and the Altoona..

Tickets For 'Packers Family Night, Presented By Fox 11' On Sale June 5

Tickets for "Packers Family Night, presented by Fox 11" are to go on sale Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m.

Tickets, priced at $8, may be purchased either in person or over the phone.

In-person sales will be conducted at a number of locations, including the Packers ticket office at Lambeau Field, the Resch Center box office and all TicketStar outlets. Area TicketStar outlets include Cub Foods in Appleton, Curry's Foods in Marinette and Dr. Freud's in Manitowoc.

Larry Weyers Elected To Packers Executive Committee

Larry Weyers, chairman, president and CEO of WPS Resources, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Green Bay Packers, club president Bob Harlan announced late Tuesday following the team's quarterly meeting of its board of directors, conducted on the fourth floor of the Lambeau Field Atrium. Weyers replaces Jim Temp, a member of the Executive Committee since 1993.

Weyers' addition marks the first change to the Packers' seven-member Executive Committee in 11 years. Since 1993, Harlan has been in place as president, John Fabry has been the vice president, Peter Platten has been the secretary, John Underwood has been the treasurer, and three others - Dr. Don Harden, Don Schneider and Temp - have been at-large members of the Executive Committee.

JCPenney And NFL Partner To 'Take A Player To School'

JCPenney Afterschool and the National Football League launched a new partnership Tuesday to encourage kids to stay in school and participate in afterschool programs. The effort centers around a sweepstakes that will run from July 26 through September 20 at all JCPenney stores nationwide where kids can register to "Take A Player To School."

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed non-drafted free agent defensive end Ja'Dae McGuire and released wide receiver Chris Shreve, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

McGuire, whose first name is pronounced ja-DAY, played football and basketball at West Virginia Tech, a Division II school in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 11 games last year, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound lineman posted 84 tackles (50 solo), nine sacks and led the conference with 22 tackles for loss.

The WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year, his best effort came in a 62-35 victory at West Liberty State, Oct. 18. McGuire posted eight tackles (seven solo), four tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception that he returned 36 yards for a touchdown. On the basketball court, McGuire averaged 8.9 points and 7.4 rebounds during his last season, 2002-03.

The inaugural Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer, a motorcycle ride to benefit cancer patients and families throughout Northeastern Wisconsin, will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004, it was announced today.

Departing from Lambeau Field at 11 a.m., the ride will take motorcyclists on scenic Northeastern Wisconsin roads to Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo, Wis., where riders will be able to enjoy food, beverages, live music and a 50/50 raffle. The ride then returns to Lambeau Field where more food, beverages and live music await. Live auction items also will highlight the post-ride event at Lambeau Field.

The Green Bay Packers Thursday signed non-drafted free agent wide receiver Chris Day and terminated cornerback Bryant Westbrook, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Day (5-11, 178), who participated on a tryout basis in the team's post-draft mini-camp last week, is the second tryout player signed from that camp. Linebacker Jermaine Taylor officially joined the Packers Monday. Green Bay has now signed 14 players who went undrafted April 24-25.

This year's contest, the 44th annual charity contest in Green Bay, features the Packers hosting the Seattle Seahawks in Lambeau Field Monday night, Aug. 16.

Back on the summer schedule after a two-year pause during the redevelopment of Lambeau Field, "Packers Family Night, presented by Fox 11" will be held Saturday night, Aug. 7, it was announced Tuesday.

The popular, family-oriented event again will feature the Packers' intrasquad scrimmage, beginning at 7 p.m., followed by an on-field question and answer session with GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman and several players.

The Green Bay Packers Monday signed non-drafted free agent linebacker Jermaine Taylor, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Taylor, who participated in last week's post-draft mini-camp on a tryout basis, earned Division III All-America and Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive 'Player of the Year' honors last season at Bridgewater (Va.) College. In 10 regular-season games, he led the conference with 99 tackles and helped the Eagles advance to the national semifinals, where they lost to powerhouse Mt. Union. The 5-foot-10, 220-pound linebacker also garnered first-team All-America honors in 2002.

A speedy defender, Taylor recently won the 100-meter dash at the ODAC track championships, with a time of 11.05 seconds.

Shreve, 22, earned a scholarship as a senior at Virginia Tech and caught only 14 career passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns. However, Shreve owns exceptional speed (4.36 in the 40-yard dash). The 6-foot, 188-pound receiver is one of two non-drafted free agents recently signed by Green Bay from Virginia Tech, joining tight end Keith Willis. His last name is pronounced SHREEV.
