Packers, Ferguson Reach Contract Extension

The Green Bay Packers have signed wide receiver Robert Ferguson to a multi-year contract extension, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Tuesday.

The Packers' second-round selection (41st overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft, Ferguson is one of the NFL's rising young pass-catchers. He won a starting spot at split end in 2003 with a strong training camp performance, then during the regular season posted career highs in receptions (38), receiving yards (520) and touchdown receptions (4).

He also remained one of the Packers' most valuable special teams performers, leading the team in coverage tackles with 17 (tied for fourth among NFL starters).

Demonstrating his toughness and willingness to play through pain on several occasions in 2003, he played in 15 games and started 12, despite knee, ankle and Achilles' injuries, as well as a concussion.

Ferguson, 24, turned in his season's best performance Dec. 14 at San Diego, with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdo..

Green Bay Packers training camp has traditionally been an event to experience, but now fans can take in action beyond the field during their visit to training camp.

Visitors can still experience the traditional features of training camp, including the Packers Experience, players riding children's bikes from Lambeau Field to Clarke Hinkle Field, acquiring autographs of players and coaches and getting a sneak preview of the upcoming season.

Packers Practice Fields To Undergo Renovation

Work is under way this week on the installation of a new playing surface on the Packers' Ray Nitschke practice field. The work is the first phase of a two-stage project that will see major renovations to both of the team's outdoor practice fields, including Clarke Hinkle Field.

The two fields will undergo extensive foundation and subsurface work, including the installation of top-flight drainage systems, and be topped off with new surfaces - Nitschke featuring FieldTurf, the leading synthetic grass field, and Hinkle featuring a new natural grass surface. The first phase, Nitschke Field, will be completed by the end of August. Hinkle Field's work will begin in September and be completed in time for the 2005 training camp.

"Keeping our football facilities among the best in the National Football League is an ongoing priority of the Packers organization," said Packers Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer John Jones. "The practice field upgrades will enable o..

Packers Agree To Terms With QB Tim Couch

The Green Bay Packers Tuesday agreed to terms with free agent quarterback Tim Couch, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

"I am pleased to announce that Tim Couch has agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers," Sherman said. "I am anxious to start the process of teaching him the offense and getting him ready for training camp and the season. Tim adds talent and experience to the quarterback position.

"Doug Pederson has had two excellent mini-camps, and Craig Nall continues to develop. Scott McBrien is still a question mark because we still haven't seen much of him yet, but he does show talent. The preseason will be the real test. At this present time, we will carry five quarterbacks until the position sorts itself out."

The first overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, Couch would become the fourth player drafted first overall to play for the Packers. He would join QB Bobby Garrett (played for Packers in 1954, drafted by Cleveland in 1954), HB Paul Hornung (1..

Packers Waive CB Derek Combs

The Green Bay Packers Monday waived cornerback Derek Combs, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Combs, 25, won a spot on the Packers' 2003 opening-day roster based on his special teams work. He played in eight regular-season games, primarily on special teams, and was inactive for the other eight contests and both playoff games.

He missed a pair of November games (at Tampa Bay and vs. San Francisco) after spraining his left ankle in a Sunday night victory at Minnesota (Nov. 2).

Overall in '03, Combs made six special-teams tackles, along with one stop from scrimmage. He recorded his lone tackle vs. Kansas City (Oct. 12) during his only 19 snaps from scrimmage on the year; he played in the second half with Mike McKenzie sidelined by back spasms.

Allocated to Amsterdam of NFL Europe this spring, Combs made 29 tackles (28 solo), forced a fumble and broke up six passes, including one interception. He also returned 18 kickoffs for 429 yards (23.8 aver..

Davis, Donald Named To All-NFL Europe League Team

Packers wide receiver Shockmain Davis and tight end Tony Donald have been named to the All-NFL Europe Team, it was announced Wednesday.

In addition, New England Patriots quarterback Rohan Davey and Cleveland Browns defensive end Corey Jackson have been chosen as the 2004 NFL Europe League Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Players by the league's head coaches.

The two players will face each other on Saturday when Davey's Berlin Thunder take on Jackson's Frankfurt Galaxy in World Bowl XII at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany at 12:00 PM ET live on FOX.

Rick Lantz, who led the Thunder to a league record-equalling 9-1 mark in his first year as an NFLEL head coach, was named Coach of the Year. The former Navy head coach saw his team set another record by clinching a World Bowl berth in Week 7 - earliest ever in the league - and came within one play of achieving a perfect season.
Packers Terminate DE Joe Johnson

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday terminated the contract of defensive end Joe Johnson, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Johnson opened 2003 as the Packers' starter at the 'Power' (left) defensive end position before seeing his season conclude due to injury for a second straight year. He started the first six games before suffering a season-ending injury, rupturing his right quadriceps tendon while rushing the passer late in the first quarter of an Oct. 12 game vs. Kansas City. Subsequently placed on injured reserve Oct. 15, he underwent reparative surgery Oct. 21.

Johnson recorded eight tackles (seven solo), including a season-high four stops in the opening game vs. Minnesota (Sept. 7). He followed that up with a three-tackle performance against Detroit (Sept. 14), and later picked up a tackle in a win over Seattle (Oct. 5).

A two-time Pro Bowler (1998, 2000), Johnson signed with the Packers as an unrestricted free agent, March 26, 2002. He has 521/2..

Underwood Named To NFL Committe Studying Revenue Sharing

John R. Underwood, treasurer for the Green Bay Packers since 1990, has been named by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to the league's Revenue Sharing and Cost Study Working Group, Packers President Bob Harlan announced Wednesday.

The appointment of Underwood to this important committee was made by Tagliabue at the NFL owners meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., late last month. The committee has been charged by the Commissioner to address the economic issues that face the league, and at some future date it will report back to the ownership group.

"I am very pleased to have John represent the Packers on such an important issue for our league," Harlan said. "Our organization faces many challenges in the future, one of which is an appropriate sharing of league revenue.

"We have a unique perspective. We don't have an owner in the traditional sense. We are, and always will be, a small-market team with the inherent obstacles relative to local revenue. Yet, at the s..

Packers Sign TE Steve Bush

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed free agent tight end Steve Bush, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Bush, 29, provides offensive coordinator Tom Rossley with a versatile skills player who has played not only tight end, but also fullback, H-back and long snapper over his seven-year NFL career. The veteran played the last two-and-a-half seasons in Arizona, after a brief stint with the Rams and four years in Cincinnati.

Arizona head coach Dennis Green terminated Bush June 1 in a move that was more about the Cardinals' new philosophy and endorsing a younger player, Lorenzo Diamond, than the salary cap. Green also released several other veterans, including starting quarterback Jeff Blake.

Bush, Arizona's backup tight end, started four games in 2003 and caught 11 passes for 71 yards with one touchdown. That score came Dec. 28 in the season finale vs. Minnesota. A diving, 2-yard catch on fourth-and-1, Bush's touchdown made the score 17-12 with two minut..

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday released safety Eric Crouch, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Crouch, 25, returned to the Packers' active roster as a safety March 23, when Green Bay reinstated him from the reserve/retired list.
