The Green Bay Packers have obtained defensive end R-Kal Truluck from the Chiefs and reduced their roster to the NFL-mandated 53-player limit, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday.

Green Bay acquired Truluck (pronounced TRUE-luck) for a pair of 2005 draft picks, one each in the fifth and sixth rounds. Truluck, 29, is a 6-4, 260-pound player out of SUNY Cortland, a Division III school in upstate New York. A remarkable success story, he hopes to continue a rapid rise to the NFL that included stops in both the Arena and Canadian leagues. In 20 NFL games, Truluck has 37 tackles (17 solo) with 51/2 sacks. Five of his sacks came in 2003, when he tied for second on the team.

Quarterback Tim Couch, signed as a free agent June 16, had taken the majority of snaps early in camp to learn the Packers offense. Biceps soreness, however, sidelined him for several practices and limited him to just three preseason games (11-of-34, 96 yards, no TDs or INTs). Also released was rookie free agent Scott McBrien, meaning the Packers will enter 2004 with Brett Favre, Doug Pederson and Craig Nall at quarterback for a third straight season.

At punter, the Packers are expected to begin the season with two punters, keeping both third-round draft choice B.J. Sander and 15th-year veteran Bryan Barker, signed Aug. 23.

At reserve defensive end, first-year player Cullen Jenkins and rookie Corey Williams beat out veterans Kenny Holmes and Tyrone Rogers. Holmes signed as a free agent Aug. 25 and practiced for a little more than one week, seeing action in the final two preseason games. Rogers signed as a free agent July 23, after five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The club also released two other veteran defensive linemen, Chukie Nwokorie and Larry Smith. Nwokorie, a defensive end signed last season, missed most of the preseason and all four games with a hamstring injury, sustained Aug. 4.

At No. 3 tight end, eighth-year veteran Steve Bush topped first-year man Tony Donald. The Packers picked up Bush as a free agent June 9. Donald, converted to tight end from linebacker on the Green Bay practice squad in 2003, spent the '04 summer in NFL Europe.

The team opted to keep four wide receivers, waiving both Carl Ford and Scottie Vines, who were competing for the fifth spot at the position. Antonio Chatman, the team's No. 4 receiver entering the season, also beat out rookie free agent Kelvin Kight for punt-return duties.

Veteran Grey Ruegamer, who started the first three preseason games at center for an injured Mike Flanagan, won a roster spot over rookie Scott Wells, the team's seventh-round draft choice in April.

Other veteran players terminated were safety Curtis Fuller and cornerback Chris Watson.

At 11 a.m. Monday, teams can begin signing players to an expanded eight-man practice squad.
