Packers Practice, Lambeau Field Atrium Among Training Camp Favorites

Making this summer an even busier occasion was the Lambeau Field Atrium operating with all its entities open and accepting visitors. While the Atrium and its eateries were open for training camp in 2003, the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, Curly's Pub and other areas were not on line until the after the regular season was underway.

That changed during this summer's training camp, as fans had the opportunity to completely fill their day with Packers football.

"The main thing I noticed during two-a-days in the past is that everybody would have to fill their time between practices away from Lambeau Field," said Packers President and CEO Bob Harlan. "This year they came into the Atrium and got a bite to eat in Curly's Pub or one of the other restaurants, went through the Hall of Fame o..
Harris, a seventh-year veteran, started all 16 games at cornerback in 2003, posting 46 tackles (43 solo), three interceptions, one forced fumble and a career-high 14 passes defensed. He also turned in one of the most exciting plays in recent Packers history, returning an interception 52 yards for an overtime touchdown vs. Seattle, Jan. 4, in an NFC Wild Card playoff. Harris became the first defensive player in NFL annals to end a sudden-death postseason game.

Sherman acquired Harris March 3, 2003, from the Eagles with a fourth-round pick in the '03 draft for the Packers' second-round choice in the same draft.

Carolinas Ready For Some Football As Panthers Host Packers On Monday Night

The Carolina Panthers open their 10th anniversary season before a nationwide audience on ABC's NFL Monday Night Football this week to conclude NFL Kickoff '04 Weekend in the team's first Monday night game since 2000.

"MNF" is celebrating an anniversary this year too, its 35th season. And what better way to kick it off than by featuring a matchup between last year's NFC champion Panthers and a team that would like to seize that crown, the Green Bay Packers.

"Last year was a great run, there's no question about it," says Panthers head coach JOHN FOX. "There were a lot of great memories for all our families, our fans, our ownership and players. But that race is over. We have to start the 2004 race now and we're excited about facing the Packers this Monday."

CHOICE DESTINATION: Green Bay, Wisconsin might be the NFL city with the smallest population, but it also has been the league's biggest winner since the start of the current free a..

Packers Fill Out Practice Squad, Re-Sign Leach, Add Receiver

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday completed their eight-man practice squad, signing wide receiver Andrae Thurman and re-signing fullback Vonta Leach, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Thurman, 23, is a 5-11, 192-pound rookie out of Southern Oregon. He signed May 7 as a non-drafted free agent with the N.Y. Giants, who then waived him June 22. Claimed on waivers by the Texans July 1, Thurman spent training camp in Houston until the club waived him Aug. 31. A versatile skills player, Thurman this preseason for the Texans caught three passes for 15 yards, and carried once for 5 yards.

Leach, whose first name is pronounced VON-tay, re-signed to the practice squad after the club on Monday waived him and linebacker Tyreo Harrison to make room for linebacker Nick Rogers and tight end Sean McHugh, claimed on waivers. Leach, a 6-0, 246-pound rookie out of East Carolina, played in all four preseason games, catching two passes for 12 yards and posting three special-teams tac..

Download The Week 1 Dope Sheet

Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature as their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week during the season in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

Here are some highlights from the Week 1 Dope Sheet:

THIS WEEK: Green Bay kicks off its 84th NFL season in a matchup that, if not for a few bad bounces in the Packers' loss at Philadelphia, could've been the 2003 NFC Championship...Both teams are essentially the same, give or take a handful of assistant coaches and players.

Green Bay Adds Six Players To Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers Monday agreed to terms with six players on practice-squad contracts, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Five of the six were in training camp with the Packers until the club waived them this weekend: Safety Julius Curry of Michigan, guard/tackle Atlas Herrion of Alabama, wide receiver/kick returner Kelvin Kight of Florida, quarterback Scott McBrien of Maryland and center/guard Scott Wells of Tennessee.

The sixth player is tight end Ben Steele, a 6-5, 248-pound tight end out of Mesa State. A first-year player, Steele was in camp with the Vikings until Minnesota recently waived him.

The Packers can add up to two more players to their practice squad, which expanded from five to eight players this offseason, at any time. NFL clubs are free to sign any team's practice-squad players to their 53-man roster.

Packers Claim Tight End, Linebacker; Waive Two

Continuing to finalize the roster they'll bring to Carolina for Monday's regular-season opener, the Packers Monday claimed on waivers tight end Sean McHugh (from Tennessee) and linebacker Nick Rogers (from Minnesota). To make room on the 53-man roster, Green Bay waived linebacker Tyreo Harrison and fullback Vonta Leach. The moves were announced by GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman.

The Packers have now added four players in the last two days, including defensive end R-Kal Truluck and tackle/guard Brad Bedell, acquired via separate trades Sunday.

McHugh (pronounced "muh-Q") is a 6-5, 262-pound tight end out of Penn State, selected in the seventh round of the 2004 draft by the Titans. A two-year starting fullback for Joe Paterno in college, he earned senior MVP honors after the '03 season, when he averaged 4.7 yards on 54 carries. All told, McHugh played in 41 games (19 starts), with 82 carries for 322 yards and six TDs, and 44 receptions for 297 yards and one TD, despite br..

John 'Red' Cochran, 1922-2004

John 'Red' Cochran, who gave more than half his life to the Packers organization, passed away Sunday morning. Still active in the college scouting department, he was 82 years old.

Cochran is survived by his wife Pat, son Russell, daughters Cindy and Tracy, and several grandchildren. He died at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay of apparent heart failure, after undergoing hip replacement surgery Wednesday.

Originally brought to Green Bay in 1959 by Vince Lombardi, Cochran served the organization 42 years in all, 12 as an assistant coach and the last 30 as a college scout.

When assembling his first coaching staff, Lombardi wanted Cochran as his offensive backs coach because Cochran's fiery personality was perfect for helping Lombardi reverse the team's fortunes. The Packers were an NFL-worst 1-10-1 in 1958, a club that included three players Cochran would help mold into Hall of Famers: Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hor..

Green Bay acquired Truluck (pronounced TRUE-luck) for a pair of 2005 draft picks, one each in the fifth and sixth rounds. Truluck, 29, is a 6-4, 260-pound player out of SUNY Cortland, a Division III school in upstate New York. A remarkable success story, he hopes to continue a rapid rise to the NFL that included stops in both the Arena and Canadian leagues. In 20 NFL games, Truluck has 37 tackles (17 solo) with 51/2 sacks. Five of his sacks came in 2003, when he tied for second on the team.

With their second trade this week, the Green Bay Packers acquired tackle/guard Brad Bedell from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional 2006 draft choice, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday.

The acquisition provides depth at offensive tackle, where the Packers recently lost 2003 draft choice Brennan Curtin for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (Aug. 21), and Saturday waived free agents Atlas Herrion and Jason Jimenez.

A 6-4, 306-pound lineman, Bedell has appeared on the 53-man rosters of the Dolphins, Redskins and Browns, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. His last name is pronounced "buh-DELL."

Bedell, 27, a fourth-year player out of Colorado, joined the Dolphins on waivers Nov. 10, and was inactive for seven games late last year. He spent the early portion of the '03 season in Washington, where he had re-signed as a free agent Sept. 24 and was inactive for all four games on the Redskins roster.

The trade is conditional only on Anderson passing the Raiders' physical.

Anderson, the Packers' third-round selection in the 2002 draft, played in 30 career games with Green Bay, including 18 starts, and totaled 139 tackles (96 solo), five interceptions (returning two for TDs) among 17 passes defensed and four fumble recoveries.

Packers-Titans Press Box Notes

TONIGHT: The Packers look to even their record in the 2004 preseason finale for both clubs...Green Bay and Tennessee, who will meet again in five weeks at Lambeau Field, Oct. 11 on ABC, end the preseason together for a third straight season...The league usually schedules the first three preseason opponents for each club, and leaves the finale up to the teams, similar to the way colleges schedule non-conference opponents (most dates and times, for all preseason games, are arranged by the clubs, even if the league picks the opponent)...The Packers-Titans contract ends after this game but the teams may discuss future preseason meetings.

FIRST UNITS WILL PLAY LONGER: Hoping to get off to a better regular-season start, the Packers are expected to play their first-team offense and defense into the second half...The Packers need to wait 10 days until they open at Carolina, Sept. 13, and Brett Favre said multiple times in camp he prefers to play rather than sit and avo..

Shorewood-Messmer's Ron Davies Named Packers H.S. Coach Of The Week

Ron Davies, head coach of the Shorewood-Messmer Co-op team, has been selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week for Week 1, the Packers announced today.

Shorewood-Messmer did not win a game during it's first season of existence in 2001 as the first private/public school co-op in Wisconsin, and possibly the United States. Messmer dropped it's football program in the 1980's and Shorewood was on the verge of cutting football as well due to the dwindling number of participants.

In 2002, Davies became the head coach of the combined Shorewood-Messmer squad. He and his team started 2004 off strong by guiding his team to a week 1 victory over Milwaukee South, by a score of 42-14. The team features 25 players with three assistant coaches.

"This is just wonderful for both schools involved. The fact that our kids do work so hard, because we are really promoting discipline, these kids cannot miss practice and we work them as hard as any other..

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday were awarded first-year safety Julius Curry on waivers from Detroit, and placed defensive tackle Donnell Washington on injured reserve, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Curry, 6-0 and 204 pounds, played in the final three contests of the 2003 season with Detroit, seeing action on both defense (one tackle) and special teams (two stops). This summer, he played in three preseason games with the Lions and registered four tackles (three solo) before being waived Aug. 31.

The 25-year-old former Michigan Wolverine originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears on May 1, 2003. He was waived Aug. 26 and later was signed to the Lions' practice squad Sept. 16. Released Nov. 4, he was re-signed to the practice squad Nov. 19 and then signed to the active roster Dec. 9.
