CAP TOSSING CONTEST ALLOWS STUDENTS TO PRACTICE A TIME-HONORED TRADITION AND WIN FUNDS FOR COLLEGE

There was once a period when all graduating students could look forward to the time-honored tradition of throwing their caps in the air after their graduation ceremony. But with some high schools banning the infamous cap toss, many seniors are feeling a little left out. That, however, will soon change.

To help students and their parents celebrate that iconic moment, Cousins Subs will kick off the upcoming graduation season with the Cousins Subs Cap Toss Contest. Cousins Subs will help 2005 graduating high school seniors and other students experience the thrill of throwing a graduation cap to celebrate the culmination of four years of high school with a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship award. It will also allow parents to alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with sending kids to college.

The event will take place on June 5 at the Lambeau Field Atrium, 1265 Lombardi Avenue in Green Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. The contest starts at 2 p.m. The contest is open to students and parents. Cousins Subs will supply contestants with real graduation caps to throw.

"Cousins wants to help kids celebrate the symbolism of the cap toss, which many of them may never experience due to some schools banning it for safety concerns," said Larry Weissman, Cousins Subs' vice president of marketing. "Going well beyond throwing the cap in the air, Cousins Subs is taking the cap toss to an entirely new level. The Cousins Cap Toss will also give the graduates a chance to win a scholarship prize, based on the highest points earned."

The Cousins Subs Cap Tossing Contest will be a unique and innovative way for Cousins Subs to honor these young adults that reached their goal of graduating high school, while raising funds for better education for those in need. For the first 100 contestants that participate, Cousins Subs will donate $20 on their behalf to former Green Bay Packer Santana Dotson's nonprofit, education foundation. The Santana Dotson Foundation was established in 1995 to provide college scholarships for disadvantaged, yet deserving high school students to help them realize their dreams of a college education.

There will be a series of three challenges and an "extra credit" challenge during the Cap Toss contest. The first event will be the Cousins Subs Cap Toss For Distance, a contest for the student who can throw the cap the longest distance. For every foot thrown, a point will be earned. Then there is the Cousins Moving Sub Cap Toss. Competitors will have a chance to throw a cap at a moving mascot. The participant will have three chances to hit the target and receive points. For more tactical players, there is the Cousins Cap Toss For Accuracy. At this station, participants will have a chance to test their accuracy and strategy skills. Contestants will be challenged to land their cap within three strategically placed rings for points.

Nearly every student can use a little extra credit. During the Cousins Cap Toss For Extra Credit, everyone has a chance to win cool prizes. Cousins Subs will have a fourth station that participants can try after they've completed the official challenge. Several contestants have the opportunity to win free subs and cool prizes. However, the contestant with the highest points takes home the college scholarship.

About Cousins Subs
Cousins Subs is based in Milwaukee, Wis., and is a national sub sandwich chain with stores throughout the Midwest and on the West Coast. The tradition of Cousins Subs started in 1972, when two transplanted cousins from Atlantic City saw the need for an East-coast style sub shop in their new hometown. They patterned their subs after the hoagie, grinder, hero and sub sandwiches they enjoyed back East. From the start, the two used bread baked fresh every morning and insisted on using only the finest, freshest ingredients.
