The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed running back Noah Herron from the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, re-signed safety Todd Franz and placed safety Jeremy Thornburg on injured reserve. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions.

Herron, a 5-foot-11, 224-pound rookie out of Northwestern, entered the league as Pittsburgh's final 2005 draft choice, the Steelers' second of two selections in the seventh round. A versatile back who also returned kickoffs in college, Herron played in two games this year, including his NFL debut in a season-opening win vs. Tennessee, Sept. 11. He recorded his only three carries, for 2 yards, that afternoon in a 34-7 victory. Waived Sept. 23 and re-signed to Pittsburgh's practice squad four days later, Herron had also posted one special teams tackle. He is No. 23 on the Packers roster.

Al Harris Prepares To Face Former Team

When the Philadelphia Eagles traded then No. 3 cornerback Al Harris and a fourth-round draft pick to the Green Bay Packers for a second-round draft pick in 2003, Eagles head coach Andy Reid did so with some reluctance.

"Our defensive coaches didn't want to see him go," Reid said. "We considered him a starter when he was here."

As the Packers' No. 1 cornerback, Harris has started every game since coming to Green Bay three years ago. In the middle of one of his best seasons, he has 32 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, 11 passes defended and a forced fumble this season.

While the Packers' shutdown cornerback will face his former team on Sunday, he said this weekend's game does not carry special significance.

"I'm just trying to contribute to a win. It doesn't matter who we face," Harris said. "I always look at it like it's the Green Bay Packers versus the Philadelphia Eagles, not Al Harris versus the Philadelphia Eagles."

Packers Promote Wishom, Place Horton On I.R.

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday placed Jason Horton on injured reserve and promoted Jerron Wishom from the practice squad to the active roster. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement.

In addition, the team re-signed fullback Greg Hanoian to take Wishom's place on the practice squad.

Horton, a 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback out of North Carolina A&T, had been bothered by a sprained shoulder since early in training camp. He aggravated the injury at Minnesota Oct. 23 and appeared on the Packers injury report the following week. The second-year player, originally signed by Green Bay as a nondrafted free agent in 2004, played in nine of 10 games this season, posting eight tackles (six solo) and seven more on special teams.

Wishom, a 6-foot, 197-pound cornerback from Louisiana Tech, had signed to the Packers' practice squad Sept. 13. The rookie entered the NFL in May as a nondrafted free ag..

Packers Waive Lucas, Little

The Green Bay Packers Tuesday waived wide receiver Chad Lucas and safety Earl Little, and released fullback Greg Hanoian from the practice squad. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement.

Lucas, promoted from the practice squad Nov. 9 to provide depth at wide receiver, made his NFL debut four days later at Atlanta. The team listed him as inactive Monday vs. Minnesota.

Reggie White Among Hall of Fame Modern-Era Semifinalist

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and perennial All-Pro defensive end Reggie White are among the six first-year eligible players who head the list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2006. The Hall of Fame's Board of Selectors chose the 25 semifinalists from the recently announced list of 112 preliminary nominees.

The list of 25 semifinalists will be reduced by mail ballot to 13 modern-era candidates. That list will then increase to 15 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the Hall of Fame's Seniors Committee. This year's Seniors Committee nominees, who were announced in August, are former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden, and Cowboys tackle Rayfield Wright. The Seniors Committee reviews the qualifications of those players, coaches, and contributors whose careers took place more than 25 years ago. The list of 15 finalists for the Class of 2006 will be announced in mid-January.

Storied Rivalry Renewed On Monday Night: Vikings-Packers At Lambeau Field

It's Packers-Vikings at Lambeau Field on Monday night. What a way to end the week!

The storied rivals enter their always-intense matchup on the heels of big victories. For the visiting Vikings, it was a 24-21 triumph over the Giants in New York last Sunday, when they became the first team in history to score on an interception, kickoff and punt return in the same game.

For the Packers, it was topping Atlanta 33-25 behind rookie free-agent running back SAMKON GADO's 103 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

"It didn't surprise me," says quarterback BRETT FAVRE of Gado's performance. "In some ways, he came out of nowhere, but in some ways I did too. I told Sam this week, 'You just need the opportunity.'"

Gado hopes to keep it going Monday against one of the Packers' biggest rivals. And if recent history is an indication, the game is sure to be close. The past six regular-season meetings between the clubs have been decided by five points or less, ..

The yearly 'Toys for Tots' campaign will take place prior to Monday night's Packers-Vikings game.

Fans attending the contest are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys which will be distributed by the Salvation Army to children in need this holiday season.

Members of the U.S. Marine Corps will be present at all gates leading into Lambeau Field to assist in collecting the toys.

Earlier collection efforts at Packers games this season have been well supported by fans.

The Green Bay Packers have signed Elliott Harris, Ruvell Martin and Tory Humphrey to the practice squad, and released Lyonel Anderson and Reggie Harrell. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement Wednesday.

Harris, a 6-foot-3, 281-pound defensive end, played in college with Ahmad Carroll at Arkansas. The rookie originally signed as a nondrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May, but the team waived him at the end of the preseason. A four-year letterman, Harris played both tackle and end for the Razorbacks.

Martin, a 6-foot-4, 217-pound wide receiver out of Saginaw Valley State, entered the NFL as a rookie free agent signed by the San Diego Chargers after the '04 draft. Waived by San Diego in the preseason and out of football for the 2004 campaign, he re-signed with the Chargers in January and earned All-NFL Europe honors for the 2005 league champion Amsterdam Admirals.

Packers Promote CB Patrick Dendy From Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers Saturday promoted cornerback Patrick Dendy from the practice squad to the active roster. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the addition.

Dendy, a 6-foot, 190-pound rookie from Rice, takes the 53rd slot on the Packers' roster, after the team placed running back Walt Williams (hamstring) on injured reserve Friday.

Originally signed by the Packers this past April, Dendy posted seven tackles and broke up one pass in preseason action before the team released him at the end of August. The Packers re-signed him one week later to their practice squad, where he had spent the season's first 10 weeks.

Out of football in 2004 while completing his economics degree at Rice, Dendy lettered four seasons (2000-03) for the Owls. A 29-game starter in college, he totaled 130 tackles and two interceptions.

KGB Has Become A Force Against The Run

During training camp defensive Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila began to figure out the Green Bay Packers' new defensive scheme.

"I just saw how it worked,"Gbaja-Biamila said. "The scheme was awesome."

The six-year NFL veteran has been soaking in the lessons ever since. And the player once labeled as a pure pass rusher has become a capable run stopper.

"There's no liability against the run," Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "He's playing the best football of his career right now."

After racking up 52 tackles during 16 games last year, Gbaja-Biamila already has 43 at the season's halfway point.

The Packers' new defensive alignment installed under defensive coordinator Jim Bates calls for their defensive ends to line up wide and at an angle against offensive lineman instead of directly over a tight end or offensive tackle. That tweak places Gbaja-Biamila in a better position to stop outsider runners.

Schematic changes are not the only reason for..

Packers Place RB Walt Williams On Injured Reserve

The Green Bay Packers Friday placed Walt Williams on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement.

Williams, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound running back from Grambling State, sustained the injury during practice on Nov. 10. Re-signed by the Packers on Oct. 25, he had played at Cincinnati (Oct. 30) and vs. Pittsburgh (Nov. 6), making one catch for 18 yards and one special teams stop.

A third-year player, Williams had spent the last two training camps, and the 2004 NFL Europe campaign, in the Packers organization. During the 2005 preseason, he caught four passes for 23 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown, and carried 17 times for 44 yards.
