| Packers Sign Five Reserve/Future Free Agents
The Green Bay Packers have signed five players to reserve/future contracts: WR Vince Butler, WR Chad Lucas, WR Ruvell Martin, DT Tim McGill and QB Brian Wrobel. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signings Tuesday. Butler, Lucas, Martin and McGill each ended the season on the Packers' practice squad. Wrobel (pronounced ROE-bul) took part in Seattle's 2005 training camp after signing with the Seahawks as a nondrafted free agent in April. Butler, a 6-foot, 195-pound receiver out of Northwestern Oklahoma State, participated in the Packers' 2005 preseason camp after signing as a nondrafted free agent in the spring. He had re-signed to the team's practice squad in November and spent the season's final eight weeks in Green Bay. Lucas, a 6-foot-1, 201-pound wideout from Alabama State, first joined the Packers in June, spent most of training camp in Green Bay, then signed as one of the team's first 2005 practice squad players in early September. He spent two games on the 53-man roster, making his NFL debut at Atlanta, Nov. 13, and didn't catch a pass. Inactive for the following contest vs. Minnesota, Nov. 21, he returned to the practice squad later that week. Martin, 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds, spent the season's final seven games on the Packers practice squad. A Saginaw Valley State product, Martin entered the NFL as a rookie free agent signed by the San Diego Chargers after the '04 draft. Waived by San Diego in the preseason and out of football for the 2004 campaign, he re-signed with the Chargers in January and earned All-NFL Europe honors for the 2005 league champion Amsterdam Admirals. McGill, a 6-foot-2, 316-pound defender from Illinois, had signed to the Green Bay practice squad. He spent most of 2004 on the Jets' practice squad, then earned All-NFL Europe honors this past spring for the Hamburg Sea Devils. Waived by New York at the end of the preseason, he was claimed by Miami and spent the 2005 season's first four weeks on the 53-man roster of the Dolphins. Inactive for those four games, he was waived by Miami in October then re-signed to the team's practice squad, where he remained until his Dec. 15 release. McGill also has experience in the Arena Football League. Wrobel, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound passer from Winona State, hails from Stoddard, Wis. Originally signed as a nondrafted free agent by Seattle in April, he spent the first few weeks of training camp with the Seahawks. A first-team Northern Sun Conference performer, Wrobel as a senior led the Division II Warriors to a 10-2 record and postseason berth. As a junior, he garnered second-team All America honors. |
