The Green Bay Packers Monday named Eric Lewis and Shawn Slocum to the coaching staff. Lewis will work with the defensive staff while Slocum will work with special teams. Head Coach Mike McCarthy made the announcement.

"Eric and Shawn are both energetic, up-and-coming coaches who come to the Packers bringing life-long football family backgrounds," McCarthy said. "They're ready to take the next step with us here in Green Bay and have a bright future in the National Football League. We're excited to have them."

Lewis, 30, joins the Packers from Ball State where he was the secondary coach since 2003. Lewis coached current Cowboys' safety Justin Beriault to back-to-back First Team All-MAC honors (2003, 04) and 125 tackles in 2004, which placed him 10th in the country.

After coaching prep football for one year (1998), Lewis was out of football for two years before serving as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in 2001. He then spent one year at Bucknell before joining the Cardinals coaching staff.

A four-year starter at cornerback at San Diego State, Lewis was a 1998 All-Western Athletic Conference second team selection and was the team's all-time leader in pass breakups. Lewis is married to the former Sara Harper. Lewis' father, Sherman Lewis, was the Packers offensive coordinator from 1992-99.

Slocum, 40, joins the Packers from Ole Miss where he spent one year as assistant head coach and linebackers coach. Under Slocum's tutelage, linebacker Patrick Willis finished his junior season leading the nation in solo tackles average (nine per game) and ranking fifth in total tackles average (12.8 per game). Willis garnered such honors as CollegeFootballNews.com first team All-America, Associated Press first team All-Southeastern Conference, coaches All-SEC first team and was a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the nation's outstanding defensive player.

Prior to Ole Miss, Slocum was the special teams coordinator at Texas A&M (2000-02) before spending 2003-05 out of football. He was linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Southern California from 1998-99. Earlier, in his first stint with the Aggies (1991-97), he coached tight ends and linebackers. Slocum's first coaching experience was at Pittsburgh (1990) as a graduate assistant.

Slocum played linebacker at Texas A&M, earning a letter in 1984. His father, R.C. Slocum also coached at Texas A&M (1989-2003). Slocum and his wife Traci have four children: Tayler, Jordyn, Haley and Jaxon.

The addition of Lewis and Slocum rounds out the 2006 Packers coaching staff. McCarthy will detail titles and responsibilities in the near future.
