The Green Bay Packers Friday signed linebacker Tracy White and released linebacker John Leake. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

White, a 6-foot, 236-pound player out of Howard, spent the 2005 season in Jacksonville. Primarily a reserve linebacker and special-teams contributor, White played 15 games for the Jaguars last year, notching six coverage tackles. He joined the club on the eve of the '05 season, as a waiver-wire acquisition.

Originally signed by Seattle as a rookie free agent after the 2003 NFL Draft, White made the season-opening roster and spent his first two campaigns in a Seahawks uniform. In 2004, he stepped up to fill a void created by injuries and started two contests, including a promising, 13-tackle effort, before a hamstring injury ended his season.

In 35 NFL games, including two starts, White has 26 tackles (19 solo), one sack and 27 special-teams stops.

White started all 44 games at Howard, leading the team all four seasons in tackles. A two-time finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the nation's top Division I-AA defensive player, White twice earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. In 2001, he earned the Black College Defensive Player of the Year. And, after his senior season, White was the only Division I-AA player in the East-West Shrine Game.

A linebacker and kicker in high school, he also wrestled and threw the shot put and discus for his track team.
