Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - Nov. 28

OK, I'll start with the injury report first. Nick Collins had a hamstring, he'll be questionable this week against the Jets. David Martin still has the ribs. We're evaluation him and he'll be questionable. P.J. Pope has a hamstring. He's also questionable. Mark Tauscher, same with the groin, is doubtful. Ben Taylor with his hamstring is doubtful. Nick Barnett with the hand, questionable. Noah Herron, quad, is questionable. Greg Jennings with a knee is probable. Marquand Manuel with his quad is probable, and Scott Wells had an elbow and a hamstring and he is probable. And with that I'll take your questions.

(Are you still unclear what you're going to get out of your team each week? It seems like it's been quite a roller coaster.)
The roller coaster comes in my view in the wins and the losses. There's a number of things in last night's ballgame that we need to do better, fundamentally, technique, recognition, things like that. That's a weekly challenge, part..

Bubba Franks Selected As Packers' 'Walter Payton Man Of The Year'

Packers tight end Bubba Franks, a longtime exemplary performer both on and off the field, was selected as the Packers' 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

As the Packers' winner of the award, Franks will direct a $1,000 donation to the Salvation Army and is nominated for the league-wide award to be selected from 32 NFL players. The overall NFL winner will be chosen by a blue ribbon panel in December and recognized at a press conference during Super Bowl week in South Florida. The winner will receive a $25,000 donation to the 501(c)3 organization of his choice.

In his seventh season as the team's starting tight end, Franks is a consistent offensive threat who has established himself as one of the top tight ends in Packers history. Combining excellent hands with outstanding blocking ability, he's a key contributor in both the Packers' passing and running games. Until suffering an injury in 2005, Franks had not missed a game during either his pro or college career,..

Balsam Fir Harvested Today For Packers' 'Festival Of Lights'

Preparations for this Saturday's 'Festival of Lights at Lambeau Field' continued today as a 40-foot balsam fir tree was harvested in Jackson County by Northern Christmas Trees and Nursery.

The tree will make its way to Lambeau Field Wednesday morning where it will be erected on Harlan Plaza. The process of stringing more than 10,000 lights will begin in the evening.

The tree chosen for the event was planted approximately 38 years ago on one of Northern Christmas Trees and Nursery's 6,200 acres in western Wisconsin. The state's largest Christmas tree grower, Northern previously has provided trees for the White House (Blue Room, 1970) and Wisconsin's governor (three times).

The tree will serve as the showpiece for 'Festival of Lights,' as the Packers and Festival Foods celebrate the yuletide spirit Saturday evening Dec. 2. The two-hour family-themed event, free to the public, is set to begin at 5 p.m. in the Lambeau ..

(Disappointed you only came away with one TD off the turnovers?)
Any time you have the momentum like we did, particularly early in the game when you do have turnovers, you want to score nothing but touchdowns. Those are all factors in the game, particularly early. We had a number of opportunities in the game we didn't take advantage of, and that's the start of it right there.

(Did you make a more conscious effort to be aggressive when the snow stopped in the second half?)
To answer your question, yes, but it was also based off what the defense was giving us. They were clouding towards Driver a lot, and there were some coverage tendencies where we felt like we were able to get the ball deep. That's why we took our shots.

(What did you call on the TD pass to Driver?)
It's a run-pass option. Brett did a great job, and Donald did the rest. It was a good play by those two guys.
Packers-Seahawks Press Box Notes

TONIGHT: The Packers play their first-ever game - preseason, regular season or playoffs - at Qwest Field...While Seattle rested many of its starters in last season's finale at Lambeau Field, the Packers have still won three consecutive games over the Seahawks, and four of their last five...The Packers are 3-1 against Mike Holmgren since he left for Seattle before the 1999 season, but have not faced him away from Lambeau Field until tonight (his first game against his former team, like tonight, was a Monday night tilt in 1999, the only previous prime-time meeting between these clubs)...The Packers haven't made the 1,640-mile flight to Seattle since 1996, when Holmgren guided the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XXXI and beat the Seahawks, 31-10, at the now-demolished Kingdome...For the second time in three years (also 2004), the Packers had an extra day of preparation during Thanksgiving week, not facing Seattle until Monday.

(How's Chad Clifton?)
He practiced today. He tweaked the hamstring earlier in the week, and he feels he's going to be ready to go Monday. He practiced a limited number of reps today.

(He hurt it on Wednesday?)
It was our Wednesday practice, just kind of bothered him again on Friday, so we were just smart with him. It's not a serious injury.

(How did Brett do today?)
Looked good. He's starting to throw the ball better, get a little more comfortable. I thought he had a solid day.

(How much did he do?)
He took more reps than normal, just because of not repping a lot of the base stuff in Wednesday's practice, but he'll be ready to go.

(Did he take all the reps with the 1's?)
Pretty much.

(Is the ball coming out of his hand same as always?)

Packers Sign T/G Walter; Blackmon To I.R.

The Green Bay Packers Saturday signed tackle/guard Tyson Walter and placed cornerback Will Blackmon on injured reserve. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions.

Walter, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman out of Ohio State, entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice (179th overall) of the Dallas Cowboys in 2002. In three seasons with the Cowboys (2002-04), he saw action in 40 games with nine starts, eight of those coming during his rookie campaign.

Waived by Dallas at the start of the 2005 season, Walter was out of football until he signed with the Houston Texans on Nov. 18 of that year, but did not see any game action for the Texans. He subsequently signed with the Washington Redskins as an unrestricted free agent on March 24, 2006. Walter played in two games for Washington this season and was inactive for another, before being waived on Oct. 23. The Packers have assigned him No. 70.

Packers Add Offensive Linemen To Practice Squad

(Can you tell us a little about Bouman?)
I've had the opportunity to work with Todd in the past. He has a pretty clear understanding of the offense. Some of the terminology, which is normal as you move from team to team, changes a little bit, so that won't be a huge adjustment for him. He took most of the reps today, him and Ingle, took the reps today in the team period with the first offense. Strong arm, good athlete, he'll be able to do everything we want in the movement phase of it. He's a good football player.

(Is Todd your No. 2 guy going into Monday or is that to be determined?)
To be determined. We will go through the week and create packages for both Ingle and Todd and just make sure we're prepared accordingly.

(How different is your offense now compared to when you were in New Orleans?)
Conceptually the passing game and the protection schemes are very similar. The run game is different, so two of the ..
-The Packers play their first-ever game - preseason, regular season or playoffs - at Seattle's Qwest Field, notoriously one of the league's loudest venues.

The Green Bay Packers Tuesday signed quarterback Todd Bouman and placed quarterback Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

Bouman, a 6-foot-2, 226-pound veteran in his ninth NFL season out of St. Cloud State, had played the previous three years with New Orleans, where he worked from 2003-04 with Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy, then the Saints' offensive coordinator. Acquired by New Orleans in a 2003 trade with Minnesota, Bouman spent his first five years with the Vikings, who originally signed him as a non-drafted free agent in 1997.

An experienced signal-caller, Bouman has played in 42 NFL games with six starts, and has completed 129 of 230 passes (56.1 percent) for 1,683 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, a 75.3 passer rating. His last name is pronounced BAU-man.

Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - Nov. 20

(What is the status of both of your quarterbacks?)
We'll start with Aaron (Rodgers). Aaron has a broken foot which will require surgery. He'll be out for the season. Brett's elbow I think is going to be fine. He's been in for treatment for both the elbow and the groin, and we'll reevaluate him Wednesday. He doesn't seem very concerned about it.

(Does he have the strength back?)
He's got the strength pretty much back, but it's not all the way back. He's got 48 hours. We'll know more Wednesday as far as whether he'll practice or not. I really don't have a classification for him yet.

(Is there pain there or was it just numb?)
What I noticed was weakness. That was the whole discussion from the time of the injury, through halftime and into the third quarter was that the strength wasn't there, the feeling in the hand. As far as the pain, I'm not sure about the pain.

Packers-Patriots Press Box Notes

TODAY: For the second time in three weeks, the Packers have an opportunity to reach .500. After opening the year 1-4, Green Bay has won three of its last four games...No team has waited longer to play a regular-season game at Lambeau Field than New England - 27 years. When the Patriots last played a regular-season league game in Green Bay, in 1979, several of the Packers' current players were not yet born...With only two INTs over his last five games, and seven on the season, Brett Favre is on pace to throw 12.4 in 2006. His career low is 13 (1992, 1995 and 1996).

CONSECUTIVE LOSSES: Only five teams in history, including the 21st century Patriots and the World War II Packers, have been able to play at least 57 games without consecutive losses:

81 Green Bay Packers 1938-45
70 Chicago Bears 1931-36
67 Dallas Cowboys 1965-70
60 San Francisco 49ers 1995-99
57 New England Patriots 2002-06

The Green Bay Packers Saturday signed tight end Zac Alcorn from their practice squad. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

Alcorn, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound rookie out of Black Hills State, had spent the season's first 11 weeks on the Packers' practice squad. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent this past May, Alcorn was an NAIA All-American at BHSU, where he caught 85 passes for 1,220 yards and 12 TDs in 20 games for the Yellow Jackets.

**

Voting is underway to select the ninth member of the Packers FAN Hall of Fame.

Last month, Packers fans were asked to nominate themselves or a friend for the honor with an essay of 500 words or less, accompanied by a photo, telling why they should be recognized. From those nominations, 10 finalists were selected by the Packers FAN Hall of Fame selection committee.

This year's 10 finalists are:

* Baron Anderson, Oswego, Ill.
* Mike Arndt, Bolingbrook, Ill.
* Rich Barbera, River Vale, N.J.

(Is Morency good to go?)
Yes. Mo will go.

(What about Miree?)
He struggled a little bit today, so we'll wait and see.

(Is Morency available for the normal amount of carries he had before he got hurt, or will he be limited in any way?)
The pace of the game will declare that more than anything. But Noah has done a good job. It's good to have him back.

(Are you reluctant to use him on kickoff returns?)
Probably not. Probably not reluctant to use him.

(Will you put Herron back there too?)
He's worked back there, yes.

(What does it tell you about a team, their toughness and ability to handle hostile environments, when you see they've won six in a row on the road?)
I think the first thing that jumps out is their maturity. They're able to deal with the noise, being the road, traveling, things like that. They're a good football team, v..

Favre completed 24 of 42 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 100.0 in the Packers' 23-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He threw a five-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and followed that up with an 82-yard touchdown strike just before halftime.
Yeah, how about that. We had a physical game on Sunday and had a bunch of guys nicked. We had a number of guys out of practice today, but hopeful to get most of them back tomorrow.

(How did Miree and Morency look?)
Morency is further ahead than Miree. They both practiced, but Mo is further ahead.

(New England always has a lot of talk surrounding their injury report, how much do you look into them?)
I think as far as the injury report, I think there is a competitive advantage, and when I stand up here, frankly I keep in mind what is in the best interest of the football team. As far as playing games with the injury report, I do not. As far as how other people use it, I don't have an opinion or an interest in it.

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed safety Atari Bigby from their practice squad and placed both wide receiver Shaun Bodiford and tight end Tory Humphrey on injured reserve. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

In addition Wednesday, the team signed tackle Orrin Thompson to take Bigby's place on the practice squad. The team's active roster temporarily will list 52 players.

Bigby, a 5-foot-11, 211-pound safety out of Central Florida, is a first-year player who made his NFL debut for the Packers on Christmas Day last year vs. Chicago. He helped the Amsterdam Admirals to a berth in World Bowl XIV this past spring, starting all 10 regular-season games and recording 61 tackles (43 solo) with one interception and four passes defensed. Re-signed by the Packers in September, he spent the first 10 weeks of 2006 on the Green Bay practice squad.
Tickets are still available for the Green Bay Packers' 'Holly Day Blitz,' a holiday-themed party Dec. 8 at the Lambeau Field Atrium designed for small businesses and individuals.

Interested companies and individuals are encouraged to make plans soon as a limited amount of space remains.

The party, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on the Associated Bank Club level, will feature live music by Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns, a complimentary champagne toast, food stations, hors d' oeuvres and a collectable tree ornament.

"We're excited about the buzz growing for the event," said Steve Klegon, the Packers' director of Atrium business development. "Several businesses will be treating their employees to a fun holiday night out with no worries about the details and planning. A number of groups and individuals have purchased tickets, too. It promises to be an enjoyable night."

(How's Tauscher doing?)
We just got his MRI back, he'll be doubtful. His groin, it's sore. We're going to give him through Thursday, take a look at him Thursday. He will be doubtful for the game, 25 percent. So he's slim to none to play this week.

(Will you go with the same offensive line that finished the game?)
Probably, with Tony. Yes.

(How's Bodiford?)
Bodiford will be out. Whatever the bone was, but he has a significant injury, so we'll get more information on him from Dr. McKenzie, but he'll be out for the game. It probably is (broken). I don't have all the information. That's something we'll decide (if it's season-ending) in the next couple of days.

(Is the team buying into what you wanted them to?)
I think like any football team you set a course, particularly this last month I think we are a football team that has been playing very well. Particularly going into this game, th..

(After playing well at Buffalo and losing, does this win validate your progress as a team?)
We talked about as a football team playing our best football, and I think we did that today as far as all three phases, particularly on special teams. Mike Stock and Shawn Slocum did an excellent job. We had a number of guys go down throughout the course of football game - substitutions and moving people around. I thought they did a great job because it was important for us to win the field position battle, and we did that today. I thought our defense was outstanding in the second half, shutting them down to a field goal. Offensively, we wanted to run the ball a little more, but I think the run game was a direct reflection of our pass protection. Our pass protection was outstanding today - Brett had a ton of time to throw. I'm very happy with the way we played in all three phases, and I thought we put our best foot forward, playing our best football of the season.

Packers-Vikings Press Box Notes

TODAY: Brett Favre makes consecutive start No. 250, including 20 playoff contests...In the posterchild series for NFL parity, these teams have split 89 regular-season meetings (44-44-1), with the Vikings taking the lone playoff, in 2004. The Packers will attempt to tilt the balance beam back in their favor and keep Minnesota from a fourth straight series win, something neither team has accomplished since Minnesota took four in a row from 1992-93...Three points has decided each of these teams' last five meetings.

WALK-OFF FIELD GOALS: The Packers and Vikings have decided their last four regular-season games with a field goal at the end of the fourth quarter. According to Elias Sports Bureau, since 1990, only these three series have experienced such late-game dramatics as often (game-ending field goal in either overtime or with no time left in regulation):

'Festival of Lights At Lambeau Field' Set For Dec. 2

HOLIDAY EVENT TO FEATURE MUSIC, SANTA, REINDEER, TREE LIGHTING

With the holidays approaching, the Green Bay Packers and Festival Foods will help usher in the yuletide spirit Saturday evening Dec. 2, with the 'Festival of Lights at Lambeau Field.' The two-hour family-themed event, free to the public, will feature music choirs, reindeer and Santa Claus, and will culminate on Harlan Plaza with the spectacular illumination of a 40-foot holiday tree decorated with more than 10,000 lights.

"We're excited to host this holiday event," said Packers President/COO John Jones. "We invite everyone to come out and have a great time kicking off the holiday season. With the many different activities planned, it promises to be fun for the whole family."
(Have you ever been called a 'coward' before? (reference to Vikings' linemen comments about the use of cut-blocking techniques))
I'm sure I've been called worse than that. I haven't read them, but hey, I gave an honest answer to a question in the press conference the other day. We have a lot of respect for their tackles. We play a certain way on offense, they play a certain way on defense. I really don't want to get into the he-said, she-said type things.

(Do you use that as motivation?)
No, I won't. To me, that stuff is totally irrelevant to the football game. Our focus is on beating that football team on their own turf. They watch the films, we watch their films, and we play a certain way, and they play a certain way. We try to put our players in the best situation to be successful, and that will be our plan Sunday.

Robin Rosemeyer Of Gilman HS Named Packers Coach Of The Week

Robin Rosemeyer of Gilman High School has been named Green Bay Packers Coach of the Week, the organization announced Thursday. Rosemeyer is the 10th and final award winner of the 2006 season.

Rosemeyer is in his second season as head coach of the Gilman program. In 2005, Rosemeyer and the Pirates finished as the Division 7 state runner-up. In the midst of another playoff run in 2006, the 10-2 Pirates take on Hilbert this Friday in the state semifinals.

"On behalf of the Gilman football team in 2006, we feel very fortunate with the success we have had," Rosemeyer said. "We have such good athletes at the school that we are able to put on the football field and an experienced coaching staff."

With an enrollment of 167, Rosemeyer and his staff oversee a program of 33 varsity players. He is assisted by Tom Tallier, Mike Gingras, Kurt Rhyner, Jim Day and Tom Schradle.

Rosemeyer is a 1987 graduate of Gilman, where he was a three-sport letterman. He pl..

(Jennings and Woodson missed practice - how are they doing?)
We're going to rehab both of those guys. Obviously for sure today, probably again tomorrow, and shoot for Friday.

(Did you rest Ahman?)
Correct, yes.

(What do you have to do to get your special teams going?)
Well, the thing we're failing in is part technique and part finish. I think a lot of that comes with confidence. We do have a number of young players in that area, and actually it was a big emphasis in today's practice. I thought the work was very good. We need to improve both the coverage and return phases.

(Was Nick Barnett at practice?)
Nick was not at practice today. He has a personal matter he's attending to right now. He'll be here tomorrow.

(What did you see in Jagodzinski in 1999 and after that which led you to hire him?

Packers Add Safety To Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed safety Alvin Nnabuife to the practice squad and placed defensive end Dave Tollefson on practice squad/injured. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

Nnabuife, a 6-foot, 210-pound rookie from Southern Methodist, originally signed with the Oakland Raiders as a non-drafted free agent this past spring. A native of Houston, his last name is pronounced "na-BOO-fee."

Download The Packers-Vikings Week 10 Dope Sheet

Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature as their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week during the season in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

(Update on Collins? Were you concerned about kidney damage?)
Collins had the MRI for the back bruise, and everything looks to be fine. I think he'll be ready to go this week. There was some concern at halftime, which is why we had to test him.

(What about Jennings?)
He's sore. He's been in this morning, but he'll probably miss some practice time again. We'll know more by the end of the week, but we're hopeful he'll go. He's questionable.

(Did his ankle get worse as the game wore on?)
He hurt it on the play where he got tackled, I don't know if you saw it. It was clearly aggravated when he came up from that. Frankly, the ankle got torqued exactly the way it did when he was injured. Unfortunate, but that's where he re-injured it. I think he just had to rehab it on the sideline, and then he felt better. He went back in right before halftime. They talked about re-taping it going back in, but he just worked it ou..

(On first-and-goal, what was the thinking in passing?)
We were in a personnel change, and the play design was to catch their defense in transition - hurry to the line and snap it quickly and hit the one-step slant. That did not occur. The tempo of our huddle break and so forth enabled them to react and make a big play for the Bills.

(Did you think about a run there?)
I have a run-pass option in every situation. I think it's convenient now to say I should have ran it. Once again, you've seen over and over again throughout the year, we have the ability to catch people in transition through personnel substitution, and that was our play design there.

(How does this loss stack up against some of the others?)
This is a hard one because this was a football game we had the opportunity to win, just like the other ones. It's getting too late in the year to let these types of opportunities slip away. This is definitel..

Packers-Bills Press Box Notes

TODAY: The Packers reach the halfway point in their season, bidding for a third straight win and a .500 record. The team has not won three in a row since a six-game streak, Oct. 17-Nov. 29, 2004, when Green Bay also opened the year 1-4...Dick Jauron, one of six former Packers coaches now serving as an NFL head coach, meets the Packers for the 12th time...The Packers are 9-2 all-time against Jauron, having won seven straight. Chicago's head coach from 1999-2003, and Detroit's interim head coach in 2005, Jauron served as defensive backs coach under three Packers head coaches: Forrest Gregg (1986-87), Lindy Infante (1988-91) and Mike Holmgren (1992-94)...The Packers, who are tied for the NFC's third-best road record at 2-1, have never won in Buffalo, dropping four total visits (1979, '88, '94 and 2000)...Green Bay tries to take both inter-conference games in AFC stadiums for the first time in three years. The team won at San Diego and Oakland, respectively, Dec. 14-22, 2003. The ..

(How did Charles do today and will he be available?)
Charles practiced today. He looked pretty good. He went limited reps, and we're hopeful he'll go Sunday. Post-practice treatment will tell us more, but he looked like he felt fine.

(Was that a surprise?)
That was the plan. The plan was to evaluate him Friday morning - give him two full days to rest and see how he felt today. He practiced in limited fashion and was able to get through practice.

(Will you upgrade him?)
Yes, we will upgrade him to questionable.

(Will you take him off punt return?)
He will not be the punt returner. I'm going to go with Shaun (Bodiford) and Will (Blackmon) in both return, kickoff and punt. Shaun will be first (on punt return) and Blackmon will be second. They'll both be back there on kickoff.

Jim Bylsma Of Cambria-Friesland HS Named Packers Coach Of The Week

Jim Bylsma of Cambria-Friesland High School has been named Green Bay Packers Coach of the Week, the organization announced Friday.

Bylsma is in his 25th season as head coach of the Cambria-Friesland program. Winners of 179 games in that period, the Hilltoppers won the 2006 Trailways-Small Conference championship. They host Hilbert on Saturday in the WIAA Level 3 playoffs.

"I'm very appreciative of this honor, and it speaks highly of our program," Bylsma said. "I've been blessed with a lot of fine young men who have a great work ethic."
Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - Nov. 1

(Do you have an update on Jennings?)
Greg went through the jog through today, the individual drills and group activities. We then felt it was best to rehab him. We'll see how he feels in the morning and our goal is to try and have him go tomorrow. He's questionable.

(Are you encouraged by what you are seeing?)
I think he's making progress. Like I said, Sunday he was close. He's kind of working his way back. It's a little more significant injury than anticipated because he made such good progress last week. If you watch it on the film, it was uglier than you thought it was. He made a lot of progress last week, and we're just trying to get over the last hurdle.

(What is Woodson's injury?)
He has a knee - a bruise.

(Expect him to go Sunday?)
We're going to rehab him probably all the way through Friday. We're going to look and see how he feels Friday, make a decision on it. We'll see..
