posted 10/03/2007
Quarterback BRETT FAVRE of the Green Bay Packers, defensive end OSI UMENYIORA of the New York Giants and rookie punt returner-kick returner STEVE BREASTON of the Arizona Cardinals are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fourth week of the 2007 season (September 30-October 1), the NFL announced Wednesday.
OFFENSE: QB BRETT FAVRE, GREEN BAY PACKERS
-In Green Bay's 23-16 win at Minnesota, Favre threw two touchdowns and passed Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (420) for the most touchdown passes in NFL history. The 17-year veteran completed 32 of 45 passes (71.1 percent) for 344 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 108.0 passer rating as the Packers improved to 4-0. Favre threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver GREG JENNINGS in the first quarter to set the record with his 421st career TD. In the fourth quarter, with Green Bay leading 16-9, Favre tossed a 33-yard touchdown to rookie wide receiver JAMES JONES for the winning points.
In his 17th season from Southern Mississippi, this is Favre's 12th career Offensive Player of the Week Award and second this season (Week 2).
DEFENSE: DE OSI UMENYIORA, NEW YORK GIANTS
-Umenyiora had a career-high and franchise-record 6.0 sacks and forced two fumbles in the Giants' 16-3 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. Umenyiora's 6.0 sacks tied for the second-most in a game in NFL history (7.0, DERRICK THOMAS, 11/11/90) and the Giants tied the NFL single-game record with 12. New York held the Eagles to 190 total yards of offense, including 76 net passing yards.
In his fifth year from Troy State, this is Umenyiora's first career Defensive Player of the Week Award. He was named the NFC Special Teams Player of Week 17 in 2003.
SPECIAL TEAMS: PR-KR STEVE BREASTON, ARIZONA CARDINALS
-Arizona's fifth-round pick (No. 142) in the 2007 NFL Draft had a 73-yard punt-return touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Cardinals ahead for good in the team's 21-14 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Breaston finished the day with 101 punt-return yards (25.3-yard average) and 55 kickoff-return yards (27.5). The punt-return touchdown was the first by a Cardinal since 1993 (JOHNNY BAILEY) and Breaston became the first Cardinal rookie since 1986 (VAI SIKAHEMA) to return a punt for a score.
In his rookie season from Michigan, this is Breaston's first career Player of the Week Award.
