| Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - Nov. 14
(How did practice go with such a banged-up offensive line?) It was a little disjointed. I thought the quality was there. It wasn't our best Wednesday practice. There are some things that we need to get cleaned up in our post-practice meetings. We got our work done. (If Tauscher's ankle doesn't come around, are you confident Coston or Moll will be healthy enough to play?) I think the week will answer that. We had Junius out there today. We'll see how he is post-practice. Tony made it through the practice. We're a little banged up right there. (When did Colledge's back flare up?) In the jog-thru. It's something that he struggled with through the game. It wasn't really that big of a deal. It was bothering him. He had it treated and it flared up on him today. (Is there something about this team that gives you hope it will handle success?) I'm doing more than hoping. I'm obviously concerned about it because we're talking about it a lot. I'm talking about it a lot in here. I'm talking about it in the meeting room. We need to make sure we're focused on this football team. We're beyond 8-1 right now. We're about the Carolina Panthers. We need to manage what's going on around us. That's our focus. In my opinion this is a very good football team coming in here. They've had success in the past. They have veteran players. They have veteran Pro Bowl players. Schematically, they challenge you. We need to get ready to play Carolina Sunday. That's our focus. (Is Bubba getting closer?) Making progress, I talked about him this morning with Pat McKenzie. He feels he's a week or maybe two away. (How's Blackmon?) Making progress, we're continuing to put more weight on the foot and he's still progressing so I'm hopeful that he can overcome this. (How about Jenkins?) I think he's going to be okay. We're just being smart with Cullen as we move through the week. He may go tomorrow, probably for sure Friday. (The toss plays to Grant, were those put in specifically for him or because of the opponent?) That was a scheme adjustment. That was put in for the opponent. I thought Ryan did a very nice job with his course. He's a natural leaner. We he runs he has a natural forward lean. That particular scheme helps him. (In your game plan, how much is based on the opponent and how much on what you want to do based on your strengths?) It's all based on the opponent. We have concepts. I have a book that's developed through the offseason and training camp that has every run-protection concept in it. Then you sit down and watch the film of the opponent Monday night and start going through the concepts Tuesday morning. You're concepts are by down, distance and personnel. You try to carry over as much as you can week to week for teaching the progression of getting the reps and so forth. Clearly, it's all based on the opponent. (You've given a lot of looks on film for opponents to study. Is that a conscious effort on your part to be hard to prepare for?) I'm trying to win the game. I'm trying to score as many points as possible. It's staying in tune with who we are. We're not a game plan by week team, by no means. We don't just dump the whole thing and start over. We have a lot of carry over in what we do. I think it's a credit to the offensive system because everything we teach is conceptual. Very rarely do you ever put anything new in, and if you do it's a slight variation of a base concept. That, always to me, has been the strength of the West Coast offense. That's why I always believed in it. This plan will be different this week because Carolina's defense is a lot different from Minnesota. Just from a coverage standpoint, you're playing an inside leverage coverage team as opposed to an outside leverage coverage team. (What does it say about the quarterback position when a team signs Vinny Testaverde over a younger guy?) I think every team is in a different situation. Bringing Vinny Testaverde in there, they had two injuries to their No. 1 and No. 2. Those are tough situations to be in. You can see what it's done to them as far as things they had to change. I think every situation is different. (How did Aaron Brooks look in his workout?) I did not go to the workout. I was game planning. I had a chance to visit with Aaron briefly. My understanding is that he's in shape. He threw the ball pretty well. He had a pec injury from last year. He's still rehabbing from that so he didn't throw the ball as well as he's capable of throwing it, that's what he said in the conversation. He seems to be doing well. We just wanted to see what kind of shape he was in. |
