NFL Europe Week 9 Preview

A lot of things have to fall into place for the Scottish Claymores to earn a spot in World Bowl XI, but the one constant in all the scenarios is this: the Claymores must win.

With two games left to play, the Claymores have a 4-4 record and are one game back of a trio of teams knotted at 5-3. But to be able to finish the season among the top two and earn a World Bowl berth, the Claymores need to win both of their remaining regular-season contests.

If recent play is any indication, Scotland is up for the challenge. Led by Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall, the Claymores have won their last two straight.

In those games Nall has gone a combined 32-for-52 (61.3 percent) for 425 yards and five touchdowns, with no interceptions. Wednesday he was named the NFLE offensive player of the week for his performance in Week 8.

Thanks also to a ground attack led by the Buffalo Bills' Ken Simonton, the Claymores lead the league in total offense with 3,285..

Training Camp Schedule Announced

2003 Training Camp Practice Schedule

For players and coaches, training camp is a time to prepare for the coming season. For Green Bay Packers fans it's a rare opportunity to get an up-close look at their favorite team.

Thursday the Packers announced their 2003 training camp schedule, which unfolds over six fan-friendly weeks, including 46 open-to-the-public practices, starting with an afternoon practice for rookies and first-year players July 19.

The Packers are opening training camp a week earlier than last season due to their participation in the Hall of Fame preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Canton, Ohio, August 4. Open practices continue until August 26, two days before the Packers' fifth and final preseason contest against the Tennessee Titans.

Whenever weather and field conditions allow, the Packers will hold their open practices on either Clarke Hinkle Field or Ray Nitschke F..

Packers Release Mini-Camp Schedule

Wednesday the Green Bay Packers released practice times for their upcoming mini-camp, which begins June 2 in Green Bay.

Back on the field for the first time since early May, the Packers will hold eight days of practice and meetings: June 2-6 and 9-11.

At this point, only the June 6 practice is closed to the public, with the rest scheduled to be held outside on Clarke Hinkle Field, across Oneida Street from Lambeau Field.

However, inclement weather or poor field conditions could force the Packers to move indoors to the Don Hutson Center, which is closed to the public due to space constraints.
Mini-Camp Practice Schedule
Mon., June 2 - 11 a.m.*

NFL Europe Week 8 Recap

Needing a win to keep their World Bowl hopes alive, the Scottish Claymores got a three-touchdown performance from Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall en route to a 31-20 triumph over the Amsterdam Admirals in Week 8 of NFL Europe.

Nall completed 70 percent of his passes (22-of-31) for 313 yards, with no interceptions, as the Claymores won their second straight game to improve to 4-4, one game back of a trio of teams knotted at 5-3. Scotland still has a chance to finish among the top two in the league standings and advance to World Bowl XI, but must win its next two games.

Against Amsterdam, the Claymores jumped out to an early lead when Nall completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Mike Malan (New England Patriots), capping off an 89-yard scoring drive in the first quarter.

Nall and Malan hooked up again in the second quarter on a 3-yard route that made it 21-3.

Nall's final touchdown pass occurred with 1:49 remaining in the game, when he hit Ro..

Butler Adjusting To Retirement

A year ago at this time, LeRoy Butler was on the road to recovery.

Having seen his 2001 season cut short by a fractured left scapula, Butler rehabbed through the Green Bay Packers' June mini-camp with the belief that he'd be back on the field in 2002. It wasn't until July that the four-time Pro Bowler announced his retirement, having discovered that his shoulder would never heal to the point that it could withstand another NFL hit.

One spring later, Butler still eagerly anticipates the coming football season, but with an acceptance that his new place is on the sidelines.

"My ultimate goal right now is to be an NFL general manager in the future," Butler said from his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla., "or a head coach or part-owner of a team. If it could be here in Jacksonville, that would be a lot easier for me.

"I've talked to some of the officials with the Jaguars, in case any coaching or front office positions open up. You never know when someth..

NFL Europe Week 8 Preview

With only three weeks of the regular season remaining, Saturday's contest between the first-place Barcelona Dragons (5-2) and the second-place Frankfurt Galaxy (4-3) will have significant implications on the run for World Bowl XI.

The Rhein Fire (4-3) also own a share of second place and will be hosting the last-place Berlin Thunder this Sunday at 1 p.m. CT on FOX.

The top two teams at the end of the 10-week season will battle for the World Bowl title in Glasgow, Scotland, June 14.

Hoping to help the Galaxy toward a bowl appearance will be Packers defensive back Jeremy Unertl and punter Tim Morgan.

Originally a safety, Unertl has been moved to cornerback in NFLE due to Frankfurt's injury situation. He has two interceptions and will make his second straight start at corner this weekend.

Morgan has been used rather sparingly, with only 27 punts on the season, but his 40.9-yard average is second only to Barcelona's Nick Murphy (Minnesota Vik..

Jeremy Unertl: NFL Europe Diary

With three weeks of the regular season remaining, the Frankfurt Galaxy are tied for second place in NFL Europe with a 4-3 record. This weekend they will square off against the Barcelona Dragons, who lead the league at 5-2.

For the Galaxy especially, it will be a crucial game in the quest to play in World Bowl XI, June 14.

Green Bay Packers defensive back Jeremy Unertl will make his second straight start at cornerback for the Galaxy this weekend. From Spain, Unertl continued his NFL Europe Diary:

Jeremy Unertl: Right now I'm just hanging out in Spain, getting ready for our game against the Barcelona Dragons this weekend. It's an important game for us. We could have helped ourselves out a lot last weekend with a win over Amsterdam (the Galaxy lost 27-24), but that didn't work out.

This weekend is big because if we win, we'll have the tiebreaker over Barcelona. That's huge if we want to make it to the World Bowl.
It's a lit..

Playoffs Will Not Be Expanded

Wednesday, at the NFL meetings in Philadelphia, team officials decided against expanding the playoff format from 12 to 14 teams.

They did so without bringing it up for a vote, confident that the proposal would fall short of the 24 votes (three-quarters) required for approval.

The issue was first brought up for consideration at the NFL meetings in Phoenix in March, but the issue was tabled for further discussion.

It is unclear when playoff expansion might next be discussed.

If the playoffs were expanded, the NFC and AFC teams with the best record would receive a first-round bye and six playoff games would be held on the first weekend of the postseason.

Carucci: South Florida Likely For '07 Super Bowl

The NFL appears to have settled on South Florida as the site for the 2007 Super Bowl.

Other Super Bowl locations are under consideration, as are two potential stadium proposals in the Los Angeles area, as league owners addressed a variety of issues during meetings here.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said owners are close to agreeing that the Super Bowl scheduled for February 2007 be held in Pro Player Stadium. He said they likely would likely give final approval during a special meeting Sept. 17.

New Orleans also had been considered for the 2007 game, but with the 2006 Super Bowl scheduled for Detroit's Ford Field, owners were reluctant to have back-to-back domed venues. Instead, they preferred an open-air stadium in a warm climate.

Meanwhile, a pair of northern sites -- New York/New Jersey and Washington, D.C. -- are among four candidates that have emerged to play host to the 2008 Super Bowl. Arizona and Tampa are also being considered.

Carucci: No Need For Playoff Expansion

The NFL playoffs offer plenty of excitement and entertainment in their current form.

Members of the league's Competition Committee came to that realization during a conference call a couple weeks ago. Their 8-0 vote against a proposal to add playoff teams for the 2003 season looks as if it will be enough to convince owners that they don't even have to take a vote of their own on the subject before adjourning their meetings here on May 21.

And that can only be a good thing.

I concede that one can make a legitimate argument that adding an extra playoff team in each conference, thus creating two more playoff games, is a sound business idea. Two more filled stadiums and two more games on television translate into more revenue. Why would any NFL owner oppose that?

Simple. By looking into the not-too-distant future, one can make an equally legitimate argument that the short-term pursuit of more money could have negative long-term repercussions.

Kirwan: Searching For Talent In NFL Europe

In the NFL, you can set your watches to the events on every team's calendar -- the start of free agency, the Scouting Combine, the draft, June 1 cuts, the opening of training camps -- all the way through to the Super Bowl.

Nestled into this high-profile schedule is a two-week window that falls between the end of post-draft minicamps and June 1 cuts. This is the time when personnel people take a look at potential free-agent talents playing in the NFL Europe League.

It's easy for the cynic to sit back and minimize this developmental league as an afterthought, but that would be a mistake no decent pro personnel director is going to make. When a "minor league," as some would call it, develops quarterbacks like Kurt Warner and Brad Johnson and a receiver like Brian Finneran, should any person responsible for securing talent for his football team take that attitude?

During my tenure with the New York Jets, I believed in the NFL Europe and what the NFL's direct..

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman Issues Statement

Monday evening, Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman expanded upon his previous statement regarding the death of wide receivers coach Ray Sherman's 14-year-old son, Ray Sherman, Jr.

"It is important to me at this time, as a friend of the Sherman family, to assist them in dealing with this tragedy and also to help them come to an understanding, if at all possible, of what actually happened, and why," Mike Sherman said.

"I know the Medical Examiner concluded in his autopsy report that Ray Sherman Jr.'s death was the result of a deliberate, self-inflicted act. I assume he came to this conclusion based on his interpretation of certain physical evidence.

"It is important, however, to realize that there are many emotional and behavioral indications that strongly suggest this was not a deliberate act, but purely an accidental one.
NFL Europe Week 7 Recap

In wet, sloppy conditions at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland, Craig Nall completed 10 of 21 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns as the Scottish Claymores (3-4) defeated the Rhein Fire (4-3), 33-0, in NFL Europe action over the weekend.

Nall's first touchdown pass was a 23-yarder to John Minardi (Houston Texans) in the first quarter. Later, he threw a 29-yard strike to Edell Shepherd (Chicago Bears) in the third quarter. Nall had no interceptions.

Approaching his second NFL season, Nall is one of seven Green Bay Packers in NFLE, including four with the Claymores.

Defensively, Scotland safety Bobby Jackson had a pass breakup to go with his four tackles, and linebacker Isaac Keys turned in three tackles.

With three weeks of the regular season remaining, the Claymores' victory kept them two games back of the first-place Barcelona Dragons (5-2), which defeated the Berlin Thunder (2-5), 23-20, over the weekend.

Packers, Local Homeowner Rebuilding Together

Friday, several members of the Green Bay Packers organization traded pens and computers for paint brushes and power tools in a rite of spring that has come to be called Rebuilding Together.

Formerly known as Christmas In May, for the eighth straight year the Packers took part in the Green Bay community effort by donating money and labor to help a local homeowner in need.

This year's homeowner is a 51-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair. While much of her house was in good condition, the Packers' construction team installed a new garage door and modified kitchen cabinets to make spaces more accessible.

Also among their efforts, Packers volunteers installed molding throughout much of the house, plus a new door and dishwasher, and performed extensive landscaping outside, cutting back overgrown trees and installing plant and flowerbeds.

Tickets Still Available For Brown County Residents

More than 500 fans stopped by Lambeau Field to turn in their 2003 season ticket payments before the deadline Thursday, but time remains for Brown County residents hoping to purchase individual game tickets.

Last month, 10,000 Brown County residents were awarded an opportunity to purchase four tickets to one of the Packers' 2003 home games. They had until May 5 to turn in their payment to secure tickets.

A supplemental drawing will soon be held to award tickets not purchased by the initial group of winners. And Brown County residents who have not yet signed up to be part of the drawing can still do so at the Packers ticket office, director of ticket operations Mark Wagner said Thursday.

"We've sent out a second mailing to those people who were not chosen the first round and we are still accepting names for those interested in becoming part of the drawing," Wagner said. "We'd love to get more people to come in and sign up. The more the merrier."

NFL Films Presents 2002 Packers Highlights

With the NFL Draft and a five-day mini-camp already in the books, the Green Bay Packers are working toward what they hope will be a successful 2003 season. But it's not too late to remember the triumphs of 2002.

En route to their first division title in five years, the Packers went 12-4 last season, securing back-to-back 12-win seasons for only the second time in team history.

In the latest highlights package from NFL Films, you can relive some of 2002's greatest moments, from Marques Anderson's 78-yard interception return to Donald Driver's 85-yard touchdown catch. You also can get a rare glimpse into the Packers' locker room, as GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman addresses the team.

Green Graduates From Nebraska

When Ahman Green decided in 1998 to forgo his senior season at the University of Nebraska and head for the NFL, he promised his parents that he would one day earn his college degree.

'One day,' turned out to be Saturday, when Green took part in Nebraska's graduating ceremonies to celebrate the fulfillment of that promise.

Seventy-three credits shy of a geography degree when he left Nebraska, Green completed his education via correspondence courses.

"A lot of guys make it to the NFL and say, 'Okay, I'm successful. I don't have to get my degree,'" Green told the Associated Press last week. "This is something I can always use at any time, and I can use it as a tool to help shape my kids and my younger family members.

"I can say I'm successful at my sport, but I've also got a degree to fall back on."

In three years at Nebraska, Green tallied 3,880 yards and 42 touchdowns, good enough for second place on the Cornhuskers' all-time list...

NFL Europe Week 6 Recap

The Frankfurt Galaxy regained a share of first place in NFL Europe over the weekend, thanks in part to a pair of Green Bay Packers, but at the expense of four others.

Frankfurt's 33-27 overtime win over the Scottish Claymores improved the Galaxy to 4-2, while dropping the Claymores to 2-4.

Punter Tim Morgan was called upon five times by the Galaxy and averaged 35.6 yards per effort, including a long of 47 yards. Defensive back Jeremy Unertl provided three solo tackles, including one for a 2-yard loss.

At the other end was a quartet of Packers, including Claymores quarterback Craig Nall, who completed 13 of 24 passes (54.1 percent) for 212 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions.

Linebacker Isaac Keys had a season-high five tackles and also forced and recovered a fumble. Safety Bobby Jackson had a pair of tackles, plus two special teams tackles. And linebacker Jermaine Petty also turned in two tackles.

For Nall it was an up and ..

NFL Europe Week 6 Preview

The 10-week NFL Europe season is half over, with the Barcelona Dragons currently leading the way at 4-1, and the homestretch looming en route to World Bowl XI, June 14.

This weekend, six of the seven Green Bay Packers allocated to NFLE will appear in the same game, as the Frankfurt Galaxy (3-2) host the Scottish Claymores (2-3).

After a 3-0 start, the Galaxy dropped their last two heading into the weekend, and the Claymores are coming off of a loss as well.

Packers punter Tim Morgan and defensive back Jeremy Unertl represent the Galaxy. Morgan is tied for the league lead with a 42.2-yard punting average, and Unertl ranks second in the league in interceptions with two.

The Claymores are led offensively by quarterback Craig Nall, who has thrown for an NFLE-leading 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, safety Bobby Jackson leads the team with 27 tackles.

Linebackers Isaac Keys (10 tackles) and Jermaine Petty (7) are also contributo..

Jeremy Unertl: NFL Europe Diary

For the first three weeks of the NFL Europe season, the Frankfurt Galaxy could do no wrong. But times have been tougher the past two weeks, with road losses to the Amsterdam Admirals (20-16) and Rhein Fire (14-7).

Individually it's been much the same for Green Bay Packers safety Jeremy Unertl, who has been forced to flip-flop between cornerback and safety based on the Galaxy's injury situation.

On the eve of Frankfurt's game with the Scottish Claymores, the former Wisconsin-La Crosse star checked in with Packers.com to update his NFL Europe Diary:

Jeremy Unertl: In the last two weeks we've gone from being 3-0 and hoping to go undefeated, to losing two in a row and having reality thrown at our faces.

The teams are so evenly matched in this league that it really becomes a fourth-quarter game. The past two weeks we've had chances to win, but we haven't been able to get it done. Offensively we're struggling in the red zone, but defensi..

Retired Numbers Added To Lambeau Field

For more than two decades, none of them were seen inside Lambeau Field. Not in representation of the Green Bay Packers, at least.

But that changed Thursday when a construction crew began the process of mounting the Packers' retired numbers of 3, 14, 15 and 66 at the north end of Lambeau Field, to be displayed within the stadium bowl for the first time ever.

"I like to put parts of our tradition every place we can within this new building," said Packers President/CEO Bob Harlan. "In the past we had the numbers hanging in our hallway in the old administration building, but I felt like we needed to get them out in public."

Respectively, the retired numbers honor halfback Tony Canadeo (3), receiver Don Hutson (14), quarterback Bart Starr (15) and linebacker Ray Nitschke (66).

The first to be officially retired was Hutson's in 1951, and his 14 hasn't graced a Packers uniform since his career ended in 1945.

Canadeo's 3 was retired in 1952 in c..

Random Questions With Terdell Sands

At 6-foot-7, 340 pounds, defensive tackle Terdell Sands is an imposing figure in any environment, even the Green Bay Packers' locker room.

After spending the last six weeks of the 2002 season on the practice squad, this summer Sands hopes to win a spot on the 53-man roster.

Recently, Packers.com sat down with the soft-spoken big man to see how he handled our Random Questions.

Packers.com: Terdell, what have you been doing in the offseason?
Sands: "A lot of training, trying to get myself in shape so I can get on the field this year."

What have you been doing for fun?
"I like to play the PlayStation. Right now I'm playing that James Bond NightFire."

NFL Films Seeks Images From Super Bowl I

Did you attend Super Bowl I in 1967? Do you know someone who did?

NFL Films is producing a one-hour special about Super Bowl I and is looking to fans for help.

While video from the game itself is in good supply, NFL Films hopes to acquire fans' home videos or photographs of the events surrounding the game: tailgating, practices, shots of the team traveling to or from Los Angeles, etc.

Some of the appropriate material will be incorporated into the production, which is scheduled to air on HBO in January 2004.

If you have such video or photos, send a brief message detailing the item(s) to Kathy Davis, assistant to the president at NFL Films. E-mails can be sent to kathy.davis@films.nfl.com.

Played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10, in front of 61,946 fans in the inaugural Super Bowl.

Random Questions With Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila

Over the past two seasons, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila has been one of the NFL's leading playmakers on defense with a combined 25.5 sacks.

This offseason, Gbaja-Biamila was one of the biggest names on the restricted free agent market. And in April, the Packers signed the quarterback menace to a seven-year contract extension.

Recently, Packers.com sat down with the man they call 'KGB,' to see if he could tackle our Random Questions.

Packers.com: Kabeer, what have you been doing with your offseason?
Gbaja-Biamila: "Since signing the contract, I've just been working on the process of moving from my duplex to our new home. And I've been trying to get in shape for the season."

You became a dad last December, how is fatherhood treating you?
"Fatherhood is great! I really thank God for my son Rashid. Every time I wake up in the morning and see my wife and my son, I know it's truly a blessing. That just brings joy to me."

NFL Europe Week 5 Recap

For Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall and the Scottish Claymores it was a case of too little, too late.

Despite a pair of scoring drives in the final quarter, the Claymores (2-3) couldn't overcome a 17-point deficit, or 12 penalties for 105 yards, and fell 17-10 to the Barcelona Dragons (4-1) in Week 5 of NFL Europe.

The Claymores were held without a score until Nall hit Scott Couper on an 8-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 63-yard drive with 7:53 left.

They scored again on their next possession, when Rob Hart's 31-yard field goal brought it to 17-10 with 2:50 remaining.

And with no timeouts left and 56 seconds on the clock, Nall and the Claymores got the ball back one last time at their own 43-yard line.

On first down, Nall hit Anthony Bright (Houston Texans) for an 18-yard gain to the Barcelona 39.

Nall then spiked the ball to stop the clock, fired incomplete to Edell Shepherd (Chicago Bears) on second down and had his th..

Mini-Camp Report - May 4, 2003

Approximately 150 fans showed up to watch a practice for rookies and selected veterans Sunday morning as the Green Bay Packers closed out their first mini-camp of 2003.

Among the veterans in the group, safety Antuan Edwards intercepted an Eric Crouch pass after it glanced off the hands of wide receiver Robert Ferguson during team drills.

Later, Crouch split quarterback duties with Zak Kustok and rookie Jose Fuentes while receivers and cornerbacks engaged in one-on-one battles.

Receivers coach Ray Sherman engaged in his usual jawing with the defensive backs, who were more than happy to reciprocate in a good-natured battle of trash talk.

Sometimes the receivers celebrated, as when Carl Ford beat fellow rookie Chris Johnson on a 35-yard flag route into the front corner of the end zone.

But Derek Combs earned praise for the defense when he got inside DeAndrew Rubin on a crossing route and broke up a pass from Crouch.

Mini-Camp Roundup

By GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman's standards, the Green Bay Packers' first mini-camp of 2003 was a success.

There were no major injuries suffered during the Packers' five days of practice and Sherman came away feeling positive about the team's chemistry and work ethic.

"I thought we instituted pretty good practice habits," he said Sunday. "I think everything starts with practice, and how we want to practice I felt was demonstrated (at mini-camp) ... So from that point it's a good indoctrination into the upcoming (June) mini-camp and the preseason."

Following are some closing notes from mini-camp ...

See You Later

Due to NFL regulations, Oregon State linebacker Nick Barnett and defensive tackle James Lee won't be able to attend the Packers' June mini-camp.

The rule, designed to keep athletes in school long enough to get their college degrees, prohibits rookies from taking part in more than one camp while the academic term is i..

Mini-Camp Report - May 3, 2003

More than 350 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field to watch the Packers in their final full-squad mini-camp practice Saturday morning.

Most veterans were excused from camp after practice, with rookies and selected veterans remaining to finish out the weekend.

Special teams coordinator John Bonamego introduced to camp a portable microphone system that could be easily heard by the Railbirds. Much of Bonamego's instruction Saturday centered on blocking technique for the Packers' punt return unit.

In team drills it was defense that dominated the action.

Second-year linebacker Marcus Wilkins batted a Brett Favre pass that rookie cornerback Chris Johnson intercepted. Then, on the following play, Mike McKenzie stepped in front of Donald Driver to make a pick.

A little later, second-year defensive end Aaron Kampman tipped and intercepted a Favre pass near the line of scrimmage. Kampman then had the ball stripped from his arms a yard int..

Packers Notebook -- Body, Mind Ferguson's Grown

Javon Walker isn't the only wide receiver to hit the weights this offseason. Robert Ferguson reported to mini-camp with more muscle, too.

Ten pounds worth since the end of last season, Ferguson said Saturday. And he's not just bigger, he's stronger and more flexible as well. Faster, even.

Whereas last year Ferguson battled muscle tweaks and pulls in training camp, through four days of mini-camp this year he was feeling nothing but healthy.

"Not tired, not fatigued, just raring to go from start to finish," said Ferguson, who reported running "consistent" 4.3-second 40-yard dashes this spring. "I actually got faster and gained more weight."

Conducting his workouts with a personal trainer at both Texas A&M University and Tyler Junior College near his offseason home, Ferguson said he's focused mostly on his core strength and flexibility.

Friday's practice meant the debut of rookies at Green Bay Packers mini-camp.

Joined by the veterans, 20 first-timers took to Clarke Hinkle Field Friday morning, before heavy winds pushed the Packers indoors to the Don Hutson Center.

A pair of rookies made fine defensive plays during the morning practice. First-rounder Nick Barnett batted down a pass from his linebacker position. And seventh-round cornerback Chris Johnson drew applause from veteran defensive backs after he stayed step for step up the sideline with second-year receiver Javon Walker to quash a 25-yard pass attempt by Brett Favre.

Wide receiver Karsten Bailey made perhaps the best catch of the day when he pulled down a ball in between two defenders while the Packers worked inside the red zone.

Sixth-year veteran cornerback Al Harris continued to flash his hard-nosed defense, explosively jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Lee Living, Loving The Dream

For most of the Green Bay Packers' roster, Friday morning's mini-camp practice was nothing special. Just another day of the same old, same old.

But for 20 rookies, it was much more. It was the start of their NFL careers, some that might last a decade, most that will be over in a few short years, even months.

Presumably every Packers rookie was aflutter with some excitement Friday, but certainly none were as unabashedly aglow as defensive tackle James Lee.

He wasn't near hyperventilation, as he had seemed last Sunday only minutes after the Packers selected him in the fifth-round of the NFL Draft, but as media swarmed Lee's locker post-practice Friday his excitement and awe were unmistakable.

"It's amazing, it's seriously amazing," Lee said with a broad smile. "It's a dream come true."

Lee's enthusiasm wasn't contained to some general notion of being in the NFL. It specifically included being in the Packers' locker room, where the space ..

NFL Europe Week 5 Preview

After suffering their first loss of the season in Week 4, the Frankfurt Galaxy (3-1) will look to return to their winning ways this weekend against the Rhein Fire (2-2) in NFL Europe.

Saturday's contest will be televised to United States audiences at noon CT on FOX Sports Net, giving Packers fans a chance to watch punter Tim Morgan and safety Jeremy Unertl, both with the Galaxy.

Morgan, who was the NFLE special teams player of the week in Week 2, leads the league in punting average at 41.6 yards. Unertl, who has been playing cornerback due to injuries in Frankfurt's secondary, is tied for the league lead with two interceptions.

The Scottish Claymores (2-2) can earn themselves a winning record this weekend with a victory over the Barcelona Dragons (3-1).
Carucci: Audition Might Answer Crouch Questions

Football followers have a natural curiosity about Eric Crouch.

We have to know if his quarterbacking brilliance disappeared the instant he left the University of Nebraska for the NFL. We have to know if the Heisman Trophy he won in 2001 indicated anything more than he was great at throwing a football and running with a football against defenses consisting of some players who have had or will have the chance to play in the NFL and many who are making or will make a living elsewhere.

Mostly, for our peace of mind and to settle those endless what-if arguments that are a staple of sports discussion, we have to believe Crouch is getting a legitimate chance to answer these questions once and for all.

That didn't happen after the St. Louis Rams drafted him a year ago. It is happening -- at least this week -- with his new team, the Green Bay Packers.

If Crouch can throw with sufficient authority and demonstrate, at the very minimum, a solid grasp of an..

Mini-Camp Report - May 1, 2003

Sunshine greeted the Green Bay Packers on the second day of mini-camp, allowing practice to be held outside on Clarke Hinkle Field in front of an estimated crowd of 65 fans.

Thursday's practice was the final tune up for the veterans before the rookies enter the fray Friday.

The play of the day went to wide receiver Robert Ferguson, who jetted behind the defense to haul in a Brett Favre bomb of 40 yards.

Tight end David Martin flashed his playmaking ability when he pulled in a 10-yard pass from Eric Crouch and maneuvered up the right sideline.

Second-year halfback Najeh Davenport burst through the line and went untouched for 10-yards before unintentionally colliding with cornerback Jacoby Shepherd.

On the defensive side, Erwin Swiney came up with an interception after Martin failed to bring in a Crouch throw.

The Packers will return to the practice field Friday, including the first showing of the rookies, at 10:30 a.m. Weather and..

Favre On Retirement: 'Just Leave It Alone'

Two days into the Green Bay Packers' first mini-camp of 2003, Brett Favre was back talking about a hot button issue from the 2002 season: retirement.

And while his outlook on the topic hasn't changed -- Favre said he still doesn't know when he'll call it quits in the NFL -- his patience dealing with the subject has expired.

Favre said he still expects to receive questions regarding his inevitable retirement, but he doesn't plan on answering them. Not anymore. Not after last season, when the subject became "an annoyance." Not when he still doesn't have an answer.

"Just leave it alone," Favre said Thursday. "I mean, I don't know. I really don't know.

"I hope that it's not injury that forces me out; I think every player hopes that. And if I can still play the way I'm capable of playing, able to compete the way I can compete, then we'll just see. We'll leave it at that, and at the end of the season I'm going to be fielding all those questions a..

Robinson Gets Tryout At Mini-Camp

Former Chicago Bears wide receiver Marcus Robinson will participate in the Green Bay Packers' mini-camp practice Thursday as part of his tryout with the team.

Robinson was cut by the Bears April 16 in a salary cap-conscious decision. Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said that he would be willing to re-sign Robinson at a lower salary, but the former South Carolina speedster is now looking elsewhere.

Robinson has suffered through injuries for most of his six NFL seasons. But in 1999, the only year he played all 16 games, Robinson made 84 receptions for 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns.

Coming off a knee injury that sidelined him for most of 2001, Robinson had hoped to return to his previous form in 2002, but saw limited action coming off the bench behind Marty Booker, Dez White and David Terrell.

He played in 15 games, making 21 catches for 244 yards and three touchdowns.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound receiver was originally selected by the Bea..
