Tauscher Fulfilling Dreams, On And Off The Field

For the past three seasons, Mark Tauscher has been living a dream, a dream that almost every child growing up in the state of Wisconsin has dreamed before: playing football for the Green Bay Packers.

Chosen late in the seventh round of the 2000 NFL Draft, the former Wisconsin Badger had been passed over by just about every team in the league. And understandably so. In five seasons at Wisconsin, the former walk-on had been a starter only his senior year and had otherwise played little throughout his college career.

But maybe it was that evolution, from walk-on to a starting role, that should have been telling about the character of Mark Tauscher. Despite his late draft status, the 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive tackle found the positive in the situation.

"When I got drafted as late as I did, I was a little upset but it ended up working out perfectly," Tauscher said. "It's a big deal when you grow up in this state and love football, the Packers are the t..

Random Questions With Chukie Nwokorie

The Green Bay Packers don't open training camp until next month, but several players are getting in some workouts before their final summer break.

Among those in town is Chukie Nwokorie, who signed with the Packers in April, following four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Recently, Packers.com sat down with the 6-foot-3, 284-pound defensive end to find out what makes him tick.

Packers.com: Where did you grow up and what is the best thing about your hometown?
Nwokorie: "Lafayette, Ind. It was right across the river from where I went to school (Purdue)."

What have you done in the offseason or what do you have planned before the season begins?
"I plan on getting together with my family one last time on the Fourth of July, before the season starts. We'll just get together and have some fun."

What athletes did you admire growing up?

Packers Help Celebrate Kids' Day

Exactly six months from Christmas Day, Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman and offensive guard Bill Ferrario teamed up with Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt to celebrate Kids' Day in Green Bay.

The first-annual celebration, which Schmitt introduced in this his first year in office, was originally started within Schmitt's own family, as every June 25 was a day devoted to family activities.

Residents of Green Bay, ages 17 or younger, were invited to join Mayor Schmitt for free activities including swimming at city pools, rides at Bay Beach Amusement Park, activities at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, lunch with the mayor at Danz Park and library story time and skits at Washington Commons. The events were sponsored by the city and area businesses.

Kampman and Ferrario brought a little extra excitement, talking with kids and signing autographs for much of the day. The day culminated with events for older kids, including a concert and Teen Night.

Lambeau Field Renovations Nearing Completion

Over two years and almost $295 million later, Lambeau Field is in its final stages of renovation and will be open for business, as scheduled, when the 2003 season begins in August.

"We are nearing completion," said project director Stuart Zadra of Hammes Co., "and with approximately 95% of construction behind us, it's real easy to see the finish line."

According to Zadra, construction costs have dwindled from almost $20 million per month, to just over $5 million, leaving only finish work and touch-ups to take place throughout the next month.

Additions to the stadium's north end, which has been enclosed with club level seating, will increase club seating capacity from 1,920 indoor seats to 3,000 indoor and more than 3,000 outdoor seats. Interior work is in its final stages while the exterior has taken on its gameday appearance.

More restrooms, better food quality and in-seat service are just some of the "remarkable new amenities" available in the n..

Random Questions With Hunter Hillenmeyer

Packers linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer recorded 249 tackles (165 solos) with 6.5 sacks as a two-year starter at Vanderbilt University.

But despite playing in the high profile South Eastern Conference, Hillenmeyer admits that he has never experienced fan support like that of the Green Bay Packers.

Self-described as a "relentless" player on the field, the 5th-round draft choice managed to take a break from his offseason workouts to answer a few random questions from Packers.com.

Packers.com: Where did you grow up and what is the best thing about your hometown?
Hillenmeyer: "I grew up in Nashville, Tenn., and I've lived there my entire life. I played high school football there, college football there. It's pretty sad, but every school that I've ever been to, from pre school through college, has been on the same street (West End Ave.)."

Pro Shop Receives 'Employer Of The Year' Award

For the second consecutive year, the Packers Pro Shop was named the 'Co-Op Employer of the Year' at an area school following a recommendation by one of its student employees.

Matt Hasseler, of Green Bay's Southwest High School, submitted the winning nomination as part of his Co-Op marketing course.

Hasseler, who has been employed by the Pro Shop for two years, says that along with the renovations at Lambeau Field, his work ethic has also experienced an overhaul based on his experience at the Pro Shop.

"The Packers Pro Shop is multiple times the size of the old store," writes Hasseler, "and with it comes new responsibilities. From having to hire enough people to work the new store, to making sure things run smoothly on gamedays, my employer, Kate Hogan, does a great job."

Packers Strength Coach Entering Hall Of Fame

Packers strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin has been selected for induction into the new USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame.

Rubin, entering his ninth season with the Green Bay Packers, was one of GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman's initial coaching staff appointments when he was named to the position in January 2000, and retained from the previous coaching staff.

"He's a guy that has been a pioneer in his field,'' said Chuck Stiggins, executive director of the new hall of fame. "He's taken things from the scientific realm and made them simple for athletes and coaches.''

Rubin, 45, has a 22-year background in his field, including tenures as a strength coach at Louisiana-Monroe, Northeast Louisiana and LSU.
Davenport Steps Onto Different Stage

You'll also be able to find him in movie theatres nationwide.

Amidst an offseason of conditioning, the 24-year-old with a bachelor's degree in theatre from the University of Miami spent a week in Los Angeles to take part in his first feature film, Blood Money.

An action movie starring rapper-actors Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent, Blood Money tells the story of Joshua Pope (Busta Rhymes), who returns home after his father's death to claim his inheritance, only to find that a crooked cop controls the streets.
When Pope is leaned on by the law, he decides to fight back with the help of some friends, and a turf battle unfolds.

Retired Nickerson Has No Regrets

Hardy Nickerson played only one season in Green Bay, but even amidst a 16-year NFL career, it stood out as something special.

A week after announcing his retirement from professional football, the 37-year-old Nickerson fondly remembered his Packers campaign, in which he started 15 games and tallied 108 tackles.

"I was around the best record that I had seen as a pro," Nickerson said of the Packers' 12-4 performance in 2002. "We won a lot, and when you're winning, playing football is a lot of fun.

"Of course I hated the way the season ended -- losing at home in the first round of the playoffs was tough to swallow -- but as far as the season went, I have no regrets and can't complain about anything."

He echoes those final sentiments about his entire career.

A University of California alumnus, Nickerson suited up for four NFL teams and five Pro Bowl squads over his pro tenure. He tallied 1,867 tackles, including a career-high 230 with the Ja..

Carucci: Packers Have Another Intriguing Backup

With their recent signing of Akili Smith, the Green Bay Packers have cornered the market on intriguing backup quarterbacks.

Smith's amazing college career led to him becoming the third overall pick of the 1999 draft. His subsequent struggles with the Cincinnati Bengals led to his availability, but they haven't closed the door on the pursuit of a successful NFL career that many league talent evaluators envisioned when they watched him perform at Oregon.

Eric Crouch, another of the six quarterbacks the Packers have under contract, falls into a similar category. Crouch won the 2001 Heisman Trophy with Nebraska. Since then, he has been trying to prove that he has a future in the NFL throwing the ball rather than catching it. The St. Louis Rams wanted to make him a receiver/kick returner when they drafted him two years ago, prompting a discouraged Crouch to retire. The Packers claimed him off waivers in April and are giving him his quarterback shot, although he did ret..

NFL Europe: World Bowl XI Recap

Packers safety Jeremy Unertl will have plenty to talk about when he returns to Green Bay for training camp.

Unertl, and Packers teammate Tim Morgan, helped the Frankfurt Galaxy (7-4) to their third World Bowl Championship Saturday at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. The Galaxy became the first NFL Europe franchise to win three World Bowls, defeating the Rhein Fire, 35-16.

Finishing the regular season tied for the league lead in interceptions, Unertl again showed the world his ability to make big plays.

Leading 25-9 in the third quarter, Unertl turned away Rhein running back Frank Moreau at the 1-yard line on second-and-goal. That play revived the struggling defense, which came up with the goal-line stand and returned the ball back to the offense.

The Galaxy then marched 99 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown, going ahead 32-9 and ultimately putting the game out of reach.

In World Bowl XI, Unertl tallied 6 tackles, to go with his regul..

Redevelopment Spurs Financial Growth

When the Green Bay Packers began the $295 million redevelopment of Lambeau Field three years ago, it wasn't just with the intention of saving the franchise for the present, but also with a commitment to ensure its future.

This week, the Packers organization will distribute to its shareholders the annual report of the 2002-03 fiscal year, which ended March 31. Inside its pages, the report will detail an after-tax operating profit of $15.5 million for 2003, which is up from $3.8 million a year ago.

But while the organization's recent business success confirms the dramatic impact of a redeveloped Lambeau Field -- which will be fully operational by the first game of the regular season -- what it doesn't do is make the Packers' ultimate dream of long-term franchise financial security a reality. At least, not yet.
Packers executive vice president and chief operating officer John Jones and corporate treasurer John Underwood called the 2003 fiscal year "a good st..

Clifton Visits Packers Pro Shop Tent Sale

Packers offensive tackle Chad Clifton gave fans an unexpected treat Friday, mingling and signing autographs at the 2003 Packers Pro Shop Tent Sale.

Nearly 500 fans were waiting when the doors opened at Lambeau Field's Gameday Pro Shop, located on the west side of the stadium.

This year's event, moved indoors to the west concourse, features several discounted items including hats, t-shirts, shorts and outerwear plus several items donated by the Packers' equipment staff. Fans have the opportunity to purchase jerseys, shoes, workout apparel and several other items previously worn by the Packers.

The sale has already been a huge success, according to Kate Hogan, Senior Manager of Retail Operations for the Packers. Over 2000 fans had found their way through the maze of merchandise before the doors closed on Friday.

Plenty of discounted items remain for the final day of the sale, which will continue Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Galaxy's Unertl Thinking Green

Frankfurt Galaxy defensive back Jeremy Unertl spent the spring in Europe so he can hopefully spend the fall closer to home, wearing the uniform of the Green Bay Packers.

The Teresa, Wis., native will put the valuable game experience he has gained in his NFL Europe League stint to the test on Saturday, when the Galaxy take on their German rivals, the Rhein Fire, in World Bowl XI. The title tilt kicks off at 11:00 a.m. CT (FOX) from Glasgow, Scotland's venerable Hampden Park.

"This has been a long journey and a great experience," Unertl said. "Our team came together for a common goal and now we are one win away from a championship."

Unertl has been an impact player on the Galaxy defense, helping the top-ranked unit surrender just 182 points in 2003, fewest in NFL Europe.

He finished tied for the league lead with four interceptions, totaled 29 tackles, nine passes defensed and one forced fumble. Unertl also improved his game on special teams, whic..

NFL Europe: World Bowl XI Preview

Two Packers will continue the chase for the World Bowl XI Championship Saturday, as the Frankfurt Galaxy will square off with the Rhein Fire in the NFL Europe title game at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

The two teams split their series during the regular season. The Galaxy are making their first trip to the championship game since 1999 while Rhein plays in their second consecutive World Bowl after losing last year's game at home to the Berlin Thunder.

The Galaxy (6-4) have Packers safety Jeremy Unertl, who tied for the league lead in interceptions, and were the first team to clinch a birth in the championship game, holding the tie-breaker over both Rhein (6-4) and Scotland (6-4).

Despite a league-leading 18 touchdowns and 95.9 rating, Packers quarterback Craig Nall and the Scottish Claymores were unable to find their way into the final round, needing Rhein to fall at the hands of Barcelona last week.

Johnson Hosts Free Football Skills Camp For Area Youth

When All-Pro Defensive End Joe Johnson left Packers headquarters Wednesday following the final mini-camp practice, it wasn't to take a break from the game. It was merely to exchange his practice cleats for a coach's whistle.

Johnson, who is entering his second year with the Packers and 10th in the league, embarked on the second half of his eight-week, nine-city interactive outreach tour called United We Jam II, which encompasses football camps, hip-hop concerts, training workshops, celebrity basketball games, tournaments and motivational speaking engagements at schools and colleges.

Nearly 60 kids of all ages took part in Thursday's activities, a free football skills camp which was held at Franklin Middle School in Green Bay.

Mini-Camp Report - June 11, 2003

Soggy field conditions kept the Green Bay Packers indoors today as the team completed its mini-camp workouts inside the Don Hutson Center.

The team began practice with special teams drills. Receivers Karsten Bailey, Antonio Chatman, Carl Ford, and DeAndrew Rubin each split time returning punts while others worked on punt return blocking drills.

In 2-on-1 punt drills, the return players got the opportunity to show off a few moves, attempting to weave in and out of the two pursuing defenders. Receiver Donald Driver couldn't resist the temptation of playing on the cover team as Bailey returned a kick. But Bailey got the best of Driver with a couple of cut-back moves that left Driver facing the wrong direction. The defensive line, looking on while taking a break from their own drills, cheered Bailey for his nifty footwork.

Moving on to red zone work, quarterback Brett Favre found tight end Bubba Franks in the middle of the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown re..

Packers Notebook - Smith, Stokes Included In Search

With an approach that looks to leave no stone unturned, the Packers have made a habit out of inviting free agents to Green Bay for tryouts.

Wednesday, they invited three more, evaluating quarterback Akili Smith and wide receivers Willie Jackson and J.J. Stokes.

What becomes of those tryouts remains to be seen, but in Smith and Stokes especially, the Packers have some intriguing options to consider.

"We're going to always continue to look at players that are available, and if there's a chance for us to improve our team in any capacity, we'll do that," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said.

In Smith, the Packers are investigating unrealized potential. When the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Smith out of the University of Oregon with the third overall pick of the 1999 NFL Draft, they thought they had their quarterback of the future.

But four years later, Smith had appeared in only 22 games due both to injury and ineffectiveness and he was waived, June..

Darren Sharper Open To Be Held June 13

Packers All-Pro safety Darren Sharper is taking a break from football this week as he exchanges shoulder pads for a 5-iron and hosts the inaugural Darren Sharper Open, June 13.

Presented by Badger Mutual Insurance, the tournament will take place at the Hidden Glen Country Club in Milwaukee. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Sharper Kids Foundation, which was established in 1999 to benefit youth, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"When you can combine playing golf and helping charity, you're doing something right," said Sharper, who is entering his seventh season with Green Bay. "The proceeds go to Sharper Kids and Make-A-Wish. I'm very pleased by the response and I think everyone is going to benefit from a great time this weekend, especially the charities."

In addition to the soldout 32 foursomes participating in the tournament, numerous volunteers and several Packers will be lending support to the event.

Jackson, Smith, Stokes Get Tryouts

It's open season in the free agent market, and Wednesday the Green Bay Packers are giving tryouts to a pair of former first-round draft picks.

Working out at the Packers' practice facilities will be former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Akili Smith and former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver J.J. Stokes, both June 2 cuts. Former Atlanta Falcons receiver Willie Jackson also will get a tryout.

Smith was the third overall selection of the 1999 draft out of the University of Oregon, but has played in only 22 games over his four NFL seasons. He made one appearance in 2002, starting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and going 12-for-33 for 117 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

For his career, Smith has completed 215 of 461 passes (46.6 percent) for 2,212 yards, five touchdowns and 13 interceptions. A mobile quarterback, he has also rushed for 371 yards on 70 carries.

Stokes is approaching what would be his ninth NFL campaign.

Smaller Chatman Could Make Big Impact

It would be easy to dismiss him, to let him walk right by without a second thought. And if you did so, you wouldn't be the first.

Standing 5-foot-9 with his shoes on, Antonio Chatman doesn't make an awe-inspiring first impression. Not as a potential NFL wide receiver anyway.

Yet the shortest player at the Packers' June mini-camp is in the running to fill one of the team's largest holes: punt returner.

The job is hardly his to lose, as many as six other players also shagged punts this mini-camp. But Chatman believes he can win the job so long as the Packers don't let that unavoidable first impression affect their vision.

"I think a lot of people look past me because of my height," Chatman said after practice Tuesday. "It's kind of hard to get out of it, because a lot of people see me as a small player and not as a playmaker."

In Chatman's thinking, if nothing else, that's what led to his not being drafted out of the University of Cincin..

Mini-Camp Report - June 10, 2003

Constant rain forced the Green Bay Packers indoors today to continue their mini-camp workouts inside the Don Hutson Center.

Special teams were the order of the day as players worked on blocking techniques during kick return, punt return and field goal protection drills.

Later, linebackers worked on covering tight ends and running backs on passing routes.

In team drills, tight end David Martin was able to sneak behind the defense, hauling in a 25-yard pass from quarterback Brett Favre. Backup quarterback Doug Pederson found Karsten Bailey streaking down the right sideline for a 40-yard touchdown pass.

In 7-on7 drills, quarterback Eric Crouch displayed his scrambling ability, losing defenders long enough to give receiver Antonio Chatman time to get open along the left sideline for a 15-yard pickup.

The defense had its moments as well. Linebacker Torrance Marshall picked off a pass across the middle of the field from Crouch and corner..

Barnett, Lee Learning Despite Absence

There might be something short of a regular-season atmosphere at the Green Bay Packers' mini-camp this week, but that doesn't mean these days are ineffectual. In fact, for rookies and other young players, they could hardly mean more.

Roster spots will be won and lost in training camp, that's true, but each week that the season draws nearer is a week that many players see their on-field opportunities start to diminish, making mini-camp one of the few times to learn the system on the run.

Come training camp, a Donald Driver will be able to afford a few dropped balls. A Carl Ford will not.

With that in mind, the June absences of 2003 draft picks Nick Barnett and James Lee might seem costly. But the Packers' coaching staff is doing everything in its power to see that they're not.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman calls it a "contingency plan." Each day after practice, packages of material are sent to Barnett and Lee via express mail. The packages include..

Mini-Camp Report - June 9, 2003

Another solid crowd of over 260 fans lined the fences today at Clarke Hinkle Field as the Green Bay Packers resumed their mini-camp workouts.

Jamil Soriano, a free agent offensive lineman from Harvard University, returned to the team today for the first time since May after his college term ended last week.

In special teams drills, cornerbacks Erwin Swiney and Chris Johnson split time with receivers Devin Lewis and the speedy Antonio Chatman returning kicks.

The play of the day came from wide receiver Donald Driver. After hauling in a quick out pass from quarterback Brett Favre, Driver was able to stop on a dime, sending safety Marques Anderson, who was pursuing on the play, into the sidelines. Driver then turned it up field for a would-be touchdown and received plenty of cheers from his teammates.

Nall, Unertl Finish Among NFL Europe Leaders

Only one of them is headed to World Bowl XI, but with the NFL Europe regular season having come to a close over the weekend, Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall and defensive back Jeremy Unertl can count themselves among the league's leaders.

Guiding a Scottish Claymores offense that topped NFLE with 4,169 total yards, Nall himself led the league in passing yards, with 2,050, and touchdowns, with 18. His 95.9 quarterback rating also was a league best.

Overall, Nall completed 58.5 percent of his passes (151 of 258) for an average gain of 7.95 yards. He threw seven interceptions, but had only one pick in the final four games of the season, over which time the Claymores were a perfect 4-0.

In Week 8 against the Amsterdam Admirals, Nall completed 22 of 31 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns to win NFLE offensive player of the week honors.

In Week 9, he had a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating against the Barcelona Dragons, completing 14 of 1..

NFL Europe Week 10 Recap

By the time the Scottish Claymores took the field Sunday, their fate was already decided.

With the Berlin Thunder (3-7) beating the Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4) and the Rhein Fire (6-4) topping the Barcelona Dragons (5-5) Saturday, Scotland was eliminated from World Bowl contention before their final regular season game even started.

Nonetheless, the Claymores took care of business, defeating the Amsterdam Admirals (4-6), 31-14, to finish the NFL Europe season at 6-4. Although knotted with Frankfurt and Rhein by record, Scotland trailed in both tiebreakers.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall completed 13 of 21 passes (61.9 percent) for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing his first interception in four games.

Nall's first scoring throw was a 20-yard hookup with fullback Mike Malan (New England Patriots) in the first quarter, completing a 69-yard drive. His second touchdown pass came in the third quarter, when wide receiver Edell Shepherd ..

Favre Softball Draws Record Numbers

Already renowned for their all-weather support, Green Bay Packers fans added to their legend Sunday.

Despite afternoon rain showers that eventually gave way to sunshine, a record 7,123 fans packed Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton to watch the Packers offense defeat the defense 24-10 in the fourth-annual Brett Favre Celebrity Softball Game.

Proceeds for the game benefit the Brett Favre Forward Foundation, which looks to provide aid to disadvantaged or disabled youth of Wisconsin.

"I'm just surprised we got it in," Favre said in regard to the wet conditions. "The weather actually turned out great (by the end of the game) and it was another great turnout.

"It was a lot of fun as usual and I hope the guys enjoyed it, and I hope the fans enjoyed it as well."

Unlike last season, when only two home runs left the yard, 10 balls cleared the fences Sunday.

The offense accounted for eight of the long balls, including two apiece for wide recei..

Mini-Camp Practice Schedule Altered

The Green Bay Packers have altered starting times for two of the three remaining mini-camp practices.

Monday and Tuesday's practices, originally scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., will be moved forward to 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday's 10 a.m. practice time will remain unchanged.

All mini-camp practices are scheduled to be held outdoors on Clarke Hinkle Field and remain open to the public, unless inclement weather or poor field conditions push the team inside the Don Hutson Center, where practices are closed to the public due to space limitations.

This week's action will be the final opportunity for fans to watch the team practice before training camp begins in mid-July. Thus far, June mini-camp practices have drawn crowds of 230 or more.

Updated Mini-Camp Schedule:
Mon., June 9 - 10:30 a.m.*
Tues., June 10 - 10:30 a.m.*
Wed., June 11 - 10 a.m.*

NFL Europe Week 10 Preview

In the race for World Bowl XI, only one team has come forward. And so, heading into NFL Europe's final regular season weekend, a trio of teams remain in the hunt for the championship game's second berth.

Among them are the Scottish Claymores (5-4), who, led by the excellence of Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall, have rattled off three straight wins. The Claymores don't play until Sunday, and while they must defeat the Amsterdam Admirals (4-5) to advance, they might find themselves already eliminated from bowl contention.

That's because Scotland needs a Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) victory over the Berlin Thunder (2-7) or a Barcelona Dragons (5-4) win over the Rhein Fire (5-4) to be able to move on.

The Galaxy are the only team to clinch a spot in the World Bowl, and are coming off a 38-7 win over Rhein last weekend, in which Packers defensive back Jeremy Unertl made his third interception of the season.

NFLE Helps Nall Progress

For another week at least, figuring out Craig Nall's rank among quarterbacks is as easy as reading the No. 1 emblazoned on his jersey.

Not only is he the starter for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe, but with one regular season game remaining, Nall is tops in the league in passing yards (1,903), touchdowns (16) and quarterback rating (96.0).

Determining his place among Packers quarterbacks isn't quite so simple, however. And even after a stint in the NFL's developmental league, Nall knows that the hard road begins in late July, when he'll have to earn his spot at training camp.

"I'll still be the No. 3 guy hopefully, and have a chance to compete with Doug (Pederson) for that backup spot, which is going to be tough," Nall said in a conference call with Wisconsin media this week.

"I'm not going to sit here and lie and say that I should be the No. 2 guy, because Doug has been there and he's proven himself. I just have to continue to improve on th..

Mini-Camp Report - June 6, 2003

With nearly 250 fans looking on, the Green Bay Packers continued their mini-camp workouts today at Clarke Hinkle Field. The Packers have drawn at least 200 fans for each session of this week's camp and will hold three additional practices next week.

After the defense dominated Thursday, wide receiver Donald Driver said that he and the receivers were going to rebound the next time out and "take care of business". Friday, they did just that, seemingly able to score at will while running the red zone offense.

In one of the opening plays, Brett Favre found an open Driver crossing the field for an easy score, and later connected in the corner of the endzone with a diving Karsten Bailey, who made the catch despite having Bhawoh Jue draped on his back.

Backup quarterback Doug Pederson also got into the action, hitting tight end Tyrone Davis in the middle of the field for another score.

Kirwan: You Can Never Have Enough Running Backs

Just a few years ago, it seemed like the Denver Broncos couldn't satisfy their thirst for running backs. Terrell Davis was the best back in the league, yet they still drafted Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis -- and this year, Quentin Griffin.

The truth is they needed all of them just to keep the offense going. As my mentor, the late Dick Steinberg, has said to me on a regular basis, "You never have enough running backs."

It sounds like someone taught the Cleveland Browns that lesson. Last year they drafted William Green in the first round, then took Lee Suggs in this year's draft. They've also extended Jamal White with a four-year deal and recently extended James Jackson for a year. Suggs is hurt, but head coach Butch Davis still might have enough in his stable to get through the 2003 season. The Browns are not alone in stockpiling backs.

The Buffalo Bills had the AFC's fifth best performer in Travis Henry last season, yet they still drafted W..

Jeremy Unertl: NFL Europe Diary

The last time he checked in, Jeremy Unertl and the Frankfurt Galaxy were coming off a loss and sat tied for second place in NFL Europe. Two weeks and two wins later, Frankfurt has sole possession of first place and has clinched a spot in World Bowl XI, June 14, in Glasgow, Scotland.

With one week remaining in the regular season, Frankfurt will attempt to push its record to 7-3 this weekend. Meanwhile, a trio of teams will be battling for the right to meet the Galaxy in the World Bowl.

As the end of his overseas journey draws near, Unertl provided another entry to his Packers.com diary:

Jeremy Unertl: The last time I checked in, we were in Barcelona having a rough travel week and needing a win to stay in the World Bowl race. What could have been a bad week actually was the turning point for us.

Favre Has Reason To Look Ahead

Sometimes it's rough being a three-time NFL MVP.

Meeting with the Wisconsin media for the first time in more than a month, the initial question tossed to Brett Favre wasn't about the coming season, or even seasons past. It was about interceptions, the ones he threw that day in what was merely a mini-camp practice.

Stunned, Favre couldn't help but smile and shake his head.

"No one's asking me about the other day when I just shredded the defense," Favre said, "no one cares about that."

Which is why it's easy to understand that, approaching his 13th professional season, the only thing Favre looks forward to about mini-camp is "going home."

Ask him about the coming season however, and Favre has a far more positive outlook.

It all starts with his health. The left knee that was sprained in a tumble with Washington's LaVar Arrington last October is fine now. A bit sore from time to time, Favre..

Mini-Camp Report - June 5, 2003

With a day of R & R behind them, the Green Bay Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field Thursday to continue their June mini-camp workouts.

Over 275 fans were in attendance as halfback Najeh Davenport, approaching his second NFL season, showed flashes of brilliance, taking a handoff around the left side of the line for a would-be touchdown.

But for the majority of the day, it was the defense that dominated.

First, it was the defensive line busting through to stop the running backs in the backfield. Then, safety Darren Sharper intercepted a pair of Brett Favre passes, the first intended for Donald Driver on the right sideline, the second intended for David Martin on the left sideline.

Driver was later involved in an injury scare, when after making a reception he was hit on the forearm by a defensive back attempting to strip the ball. Driver experienced some numbness in his fingers as a result, but X-rays showed no bone damage.

Driver sai..

Team Bowls To Bond

Four years ago, on the Friday of his first June mini-camp as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Mike Sherman surprised his players when he cancelled practice, boarded the team on buses and sent them bowling.

In the years that followed, Sherman arranged team trips to play paintball and golf -- both times on Fridays in June mini-camp -- so that by this spring, veteran players expected that they would have another mini-camp fieldtrip. They just didn't think it would be Wednesday.

"That even got (the veterans)," eighth-year guard Marco Rivera said. "He kind of surprised us. He switched it up."

Sherman announced the special outing at the team's 9 a.m. meeting, and before everyone was bused to Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley, a draft was held to separate players, coaches and other football personnel into 28 competitive foursomes.

Captains were assigned based on their tenure in the league, starting with center Frank Winters, approaching his 17th NFL season..

Mini-Camp Report - June 4, 2003

Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman threw his team a curve ball today by canceling practice and sending them bowling instead.

The surprise team function is one of the ways Sherman looks to build team chemistry. In the past, the Packers have experimented with golf and paintball outings, but the team went bowling this year so that more of the players and coaches could be involved in the competitive aspect of the event.

Traditionally saved for the Friday of June mini-camp, this time around Sherman chose to schedule the event earlier in the week to surprise the entire team, including veterans who had become accustomed to the event being held at the end of the week.

The Packers will resume practice on Thursday at 11 a.m. as scheduled, and will add a Friday practice at 10:30 a.m. Next week's schedule will remain unaltered.

Weather and field conditions permitting, practice will be held outside at Clarke Hinkle Field (open to the public), but otherwise..

Mini-Camp Practice Cancelled

The Green Bay Packers' Wednesday mini-camp practice, which had been scheduled to be held at Clarke Hinkle Field and remain open to the public, has been cancelled due to a team function.

Thursday's 11 a.m. practice will remain unchanged, and the Packers will add a Friday practice at 10:30 a.m. Next week's schedule will remain unaltered.

All mini-camp practices are scheduled to be held outdoors on Clarke Hinkle Field and remain open to the public, unless inclement weather or poor field conditions push the team inside the Don Hutson Center, where practices are closed to the public due to space limitations.

Thus far, June mini-camp practices have drawn crowds of 230 or more.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman apologizes to those Packers fans that planned to attend today's practice.

Updated Mini-Camp Schedule:
Wed., June 4 - Practice closed
Thurs., June 5 - 11 a.m.*
Fri., June 6 - 10:30 a.m.*
Mon., June 9 - 11 a.m.*

Mini-Camp Report - June 3, 2003

Newly signed offensive tackle Marcus Spriggs joined the Packers on the field today as the team continued its mini-camp practice sessions at Clarke Hinkle Field.

Approximately 240 fans were in attendance as the Packers opened their team drills, starting with special teams coverage and working their way to 11-on-11 drills.

It didn't take long for the defense to step up. On the opening play, it was quarterback Brett Farve looking to his favorite receiver, Donald Driver, sprinting down the left sideline, but cornerback Al Harris was there to break up the play.

Farve then decided to try his luck on the other side, hitting Driver for a 40-yard gain and a would-be touchdown had the play continued following the catch. But on the very next play, it was Harris again batting the ball away from Farve's intended receiver.

On offense, second-year receiver Devin Lewis was able to find his way behind the defensive backfield as quarterback Eric Crouch hit him i..

Mini-Camp Report - June 2, 2003

With near perfect weather as the backdrop, almost 200 fans lined the fences today at Clarke Hinkle Field as the Green Bay Packers opened their second mini-camp of the offseason.

While most of the team was in attendance, some rookies were absent due to college courses still in session. First-round draft pick linebacker Nick Barnett and fifth-round draft pick defensive tackle James Lee both remained at Oregon State, while free agent offensive lineman Jamil Soriano finishes his semester at Harvard.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman assured reporters that the players missing camp would not be totally lost when they arrive for training camp, thanks to their new playbook delivered to them via CD.

Among those returning to the field for the first time this off-season were defensive backs Bhawoh Jue, coming back from an injured abdomen/groin last season, and Marques Anderson, who missed the Packers' previous mini-camp with a hamstring injury.

Packers Notebook - Jue Makes Return

As the Green Bay Packers opened their second mini-camp of the spring Monday, defensive back Bhawoh Jue said he was running around the practice field like a chicken with its head cut off.

Although, Jue noted, at least he was running.

A third-round draft pick in 2001, Jue missed almost the entire 2002 season with various maladies, including a groin injury that landed him on injured reserve in October. He missed the previous 2003 mini-camp because of bone chips in his ankle.

So after Monday's workout, Jue was noticeably pleased to be back on the field and feeling healthy.

"When you're not out there practicing, you almost feels like you're an outcast or you're not part of the team," Jue said. "I'm back with my boys now, and it feels good."

Jue said he didn't experience any soreness during practice, while maintaining that it would give him a needed boost of confidence if he could finish mini-camp feeling as healthy as he does starting it.

NFL Europe Week 9 Recap

With the Scottish Claymores needing a win in Week 9 to preserve their World Bowl hopes, Green Bay Packers quarterback Craig Nall couldn't have been much better.

Over the weekend, the 2002 fifth-round draft choice from Northwestern (La.) State completed 14-of-16 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in only limited action as the Claymores (5-4) romped over the Barcelona Dragons (5-4) 45-7.

Nall went without an interception for the third-straight game and had a quarterback rating of 158.3, the highest possible. Both of his touchdown passes came in the first quarter, the first a 7-yarder to Maurice Hicks (Chicago Bears), the second a 23-yard connection with John Minardi (Houston Texans).

With the game well at hand, Nall was relieved by backup Shane Stafford (New England Patriots) for all of the second quarter and all but one possession of the second half.

The win keeps the Claymores in the World Bowl race. To advance to the championship game, the ..
