Tommy Collins Training Camp Diary - Part II

Green Bay Packers training camp continues at a relentless pace as signs of the coming season begin to appear on the horizon.

Monday the Packers will open their preseason schedule against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, which will be broadcast to a nationwide audience on ABC's Monday Night Football.

While the game means nothing to the Packers' 2003 win-loss record, it means everything to rookies like Tommy Collins, who have mere weeks to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Last week, in his first Training Camp Diary entry, Collins described what it was like to practice at Clarke Hinkle Field in front of the Packers' loyal and enthusiastic fans.

In this installment, Collins describes what it's like to practice away from the public eye, as he did last Monday when the team held a closed practice inside Lambeau Field.
Training Camp Report - July 31

Soggy field conditions forced the Packers to take practice indoors for an upbeat workout inside the Don Hutson Center, Thursday.

"I commended them on their intensity," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "I would like to see the execution get a little better, but as long as we have intensity, and I look for that everyday in practice and I tell them how it is everyday, then we'll get better."

Following position drills, the team worked on stopping the running game in 'thud' contact team drills.

The defense looked solid as safety Bobby Jackson broke into the backfield, standing up Najeh Davenport at the line of scrimmage. Defensive end Chukie Nwokorkie also stopped the 250-pound running back behind the line on the ensuing play.

In special teams drills, Antonio Chatman, Carl Ford, Brian McDonald and DeAndrew Rubin again shared reps returning punts while the punt teams worked on downing the ball inside the 5-yard line as well as punt and field goal pro..

Training Camp Report - July 30

Almost 850 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field Wednesday for one of the more spirited practices of training camp thus far.

Newly-signed running back Herbert Goodman, who goes by the nickname "Whisper," introduced himself to cornerback Bryant Westbrook in a loud way as the two collided on a running play up the middle during full-contact team drills.

Goodman left Westbrook flat on his back, prompting running back Najeh Davenport to leave the sideline to congratulate his fellow ball carrier with a chest bump and high-five.

"I love football and the contact of it," the hard-hitting Westbrook said. "You get banged up sometimes. Today I took one on the chin, but I'll get back up."

Davenport, who has mostly been dishing out the hits in practice, found himself running into an immovable object during the morning session. That immovable object wears No. 93.

"That wasn't me making the hit, that was him (Gilbert Brown) making the hit," Da..

Sargento Named Official Cheese Of Lambeau Field

Two of Wisconsin's most famous products, the Green Bay Packers and cheese, have officially joined forces.

The Packers have named Sargento the official cheese of Lambeau Field, it was announced Wednesday.

Sargento Food's Inc. is a family-owned Wisconsin-based cheese maker and is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2003.

"We're proud to join the Green Bay Packers," Sargento CEO Lou Gentine said, "not only for their winning tradition, but more important that they share our commitment to represent America's hard working values and generosity."

As part of their sponsorship, Sargento will kickoff its "Touchdowns for Charity" program. Sargento will donate $1,000 to the Milwaukee-based food bank Hunger Task Force for every Green Bay Packers touchdown made throughout the 2003 regular season.

A running tally of money donated will be displayed on the stadium video boards during each home game.

Packer fans will also enjoy new "Sargento" burg..

Brown Pleased To Be 'Home'

Getting just a few plays here and there, Gilbert Brown's participation at the Green Bay Packers' training camp practice Tuesday afternoon wasn't extensive, but it was landmark.

Officially re-signed by the team earlier in the day, Brown was back with the Packers for the first time since the playoff loss to Atlanta in January.

"It feels good to be home," said Brown, who sat out both of the Packers' offseason mini-camps while contract negations slowly unfolded.

"I didn't want to be nowhere else but here. Hopefully I can finish up here and ride off into the sunset."

The Packers would like nothing more. Brown has been with the team since 1993, when the Packers claimed him off waivers following his release by the Minnesota Vikings.

Except for the 2000 season, which Brown missed in its entirety, he's been the regular starter at nose tackle since the end of the 1995 campaign.

Training Camp Report - July 29, 2003

The Green Bay Packers hit the practice field only once Tuesday, but it probably felt like more, even to the 750-plus fans in attendance.

The Packers' afternoon workout at Clarke Hinkle Field was under an unrelenting sun on an 85-degree day.

"When it's hot, nothing moves quite as fast as you'd like it to move, players and coaches alike, at times," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "But you've got to fight through it. I thought they did."

After an opening period of special teams, the Packers moved into team drills.

The No. 1 offense looked different than usual, starting at quarterback where Doug Pederson filled in for Brett Favre, who was granted the afternoon off. Donald Driver also had the afternoon off, with Robert Ferguson sidelined due to injury.

That left Javon Walker and Karsten Bailey at receiver, but when Walker became ill early in practice, he was replaced by rookie Carl Ford.

Tyrone Davis worked at tight end, with both ..

Training Camp Report - July 28, 2003

In a departure from the normal routine, the Green Bay Packers held a closed practice Monday night at Lambeau Field.

The main purpose of the private workout was to allow newcomers to get accustomed to the stadium and lights, although there were special scrimmage situations throughout the practice.

Originally scheduled to be a pads practice with some live tackling, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman was forced to scale things back to shorts and touch contact due to the team's ever-going number of injuries, especially in the offensive backfield where the team was without six of nine running backs.

As it was, fullback Nick Luchey filled in at tailback with the No. 2 offense.

"I would have preferred to be out here in pads tonight," Sherman said, "but with the injuries we've had (it had to be scaled back)."

Among the leaders offensively were wide receivers Javon Walker and Karsten Bailey, who made seven catches apiece while working with the No. 1 offens..

Brown Attends Monday Night Practice

Although he has yet to be officially re-signed by the team, veteran nose guard Gilbert Brown attended the Green Bay Packers' Monday night workout at Lambeau Field.

Dressed in Packers athletic attire, Brown was simply an observer Monday, but his attendance marked his first practice appearance since the 2002 season.

According to GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, getting Brown officially added to the roster is contingent upon Brown passing his physical.

"We have to be careful because obviously Gilbert hasn't been out here and we just want to make sure that he's ready before we do that," Sherman said. "But he'll be at practice tomorrow."

Brown is approaching his 10th NFL season, all of them with Green Bay.

Last season the 6-foot-2, 340-pounder started 11 games for the Packers, making 36 tackles.

Brown played 11 games in 2001 and made 33 tackles, after spending the entire 2000 season out of footbal..

Kidney Stone Sidelines Henderson

Already thin due to injuries, the Green Bay Packers' offensive backfield took another hit Monday, when veteran fullback William Henderson was sent to the hospital due to a kidney stone.

Henderson was planning to take part in the Packers' closed practice at Lambeau Field Monday night, but less than 30 minutes before he was supposed to take the field, Henderson was instead taken to the hospital.

He was released within hours.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said he expected Henderson to be sidelined for "a couple days." It's unknown whether Henderson will be available when the Packers open their preseason schedule August 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC-NFC Pro Football Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

Monday, the Packers were limited to practicing with Ahman Green and Nick Luchey at halfback, with rookie Tommy Collins taking reps at fullback.

Pro Football Hall Of Fame Welcoming Committee: James Lofton

Hall of Fame cornerback Mike Haynes has known James Lofton as both an opponent and as a teammate. Needless to say, he preferred it when they played on the same team - so much so, they were actually roommates with the Raiders. They will once again be on the same team beginning Aug. 3, when Lofton is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

James, when you came into the NFL in 1978, I knew you from your college days as more of a track and field phenomenon. You were a great track and field athlete and I remember you were considering competing in the Olympics. Coming into the National Football League, there was no question your speed and big-play ability would take you far.

I've always enjoyed watching you run - a long strider, graceful and effortless runner. When I was with New England and you were starting out with the Packers, I got a chance to play against you, and got to see your skills up close. I saw it again when I was with the Raiders. An awful lot o..

Brown Expected To Sign Soon

After one week of training camp the Packers are still without veteran nose tackle Gilbert Brown, but probably not for much longer.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Sunday that he expects to have Brown re-signed by late tonight or early Monday.

"I think we're fairly close," Sherman said. "There are some things that have to be worked out."

A fan favorite in Green Bay, the 6-foot-2, 340-pound Brown would be approaching his 10th NFL season, all of them with the Packers.
Ford Looks To Seize The Moment

As tired as the expression may be, in the NFL, one man's loss often really is another man's gain.

So while Carl Ford was saddened to hear that fellow wide receiver Devin Lewis had to be placed on injured reserve Saturday due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, he wasn't naive to the circumstances.

"Now it kind of opens it up for me even more," the seventh-round pick said Sunday. "I just have to take advantage of what's in front of me."

What's in front of Ford is a potential spot on the Green Bay Packers' 2003 roster. Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson and Javon Walker secure the Packers' top three receiver positions, with Karsten Bailey currently holding down the No. 4 role.

Presumably, that leaves vacant at least one receiver spot, with Ford and five others, including fellow seventh-round draft pick DeAndrew Rubin, vying to fill it.

While the true test for all the contenders will come in the form of five preseason games, Ford is off to a ..

Training Camp Report - July 27, 2003

Nearly 800 people lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field as the Packers continued training camp workouts, Sunday.

Safety Darren Sharper gave the team a brief scare in 9-on-7 drills, suffering a stinger in the left shoulder after making a tackle on running back Lamar Smith.

Smith, who was hit below the knees by the diving Sharper, also appeared to be injured but was able to walk it off and return to action, later putting a move on linebacker Torrance Marshall to get up the left sideline.

Sharper took the rest of the morning off to ice the shoulder, and according to GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, "does not have problems with reoccurring stingers and should be okay."

In team drills, Joey Knapp was able to take advantage of a depleted tight end roster, grabbing two bullets from quarterback Brett Favre for gains of 20 and 15 yards, respectively.

Mike McKenzie continued to show off his play making abilities, intercepting a Favre pass on the righ..

Players, Coaches Weigh In To Fight Hunger

Several Green Bay Packers players and coaches took part in the 2003 Campbell's Chunky/NFL Tackling Hunger program at Lambeau Field, Sunday.

Kevin Barry, Cletidus Hunt, Terdell Sands, Mark Tauscher and Rod Walker plus coaches Jethro Franklin, Bob Slowik and Lionel Washington each weighed in to benefit food banks nationwide.

In what is an annual event, Campbell's Chunky soup will donate 10 times the participants' combined weight in cans of Chunky Soup, which in this case will generate over 16,000 pounds of food for needy families.

"With so many people in need right here in Green Bay, we're proud to help in any way we can," Tauscher said. "It means a lot to team with Campbell's Chunky soup on a program that will touch the lives of needy people across the country and here at home."

Training Camp Report - July 26, 2003

Early morning thundershowers caused the Green Bay Packers to move practice inside the Don Hutson Center for the first time of training camp.

The team began their morning practice with position drills and 7-on-7 action.

Focusing on the run game in the first set of team drills, Ahman Green juked defenders in the backfield before cutting back to the inside for an 8-yard gain. But the defense flashed some playmaking skills of its own, with safety Antuan Edwards catching Najeh Davenport along the left sideline to bring down the 6-foot-1, 250-pound halfback for no gain.

Having lost running back Adam Tate to a knee injury yesterday, the Packers traded cornerback Keith Burnell's green defensive jersey for a white one, moving the former Delaware running back to the offensive side of the ball.

Burnell, who goes by the nickname 'Sweet Feet,' played both offense and defense in college. As a senior at Delaware, he gained 956 yards and scored nine touchdowns. ..

More Than 1,500 Turn Out For 2nd-Annual Packers Partners Reception

As dusk set in, the second-annual Packers Partners Club of Champions reception came to a close at Lambeau Field, ending a very special night for the more than 1,500 fans in attendance.

The highlights were many. At the top of the list was the simple opportunity to sit in the bleachers and enjoy the ambiance of a historic stadium that will enjoy its rededication in just over a month.

Packers vice president and chief operating officer John Jones welcomed the Packers Partners members and described to them the new amenities of a renovated Lambeau Field, before taking their questions and suggestions.

Several prizes were then handed out, including a football autographed by Bill Ferrario, Aaron Kampman and Marco Rivera, a jersey autographed by tight end Bubba Franks, multiple posters autographed by Brett Favre and a football signed by the 2002 Packers team.

Training Camp Report - July 25, 2003

Practicing in front of the largest training camp crowd thus far, the Packers continued workouts Friday as more than 1,200 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field.

Safety Darren Sharper started things off with an interception, stepping in front of a pass to the tight end by quarterback Akili Smith in 9-on-7 drills.

In 1-on-1 cover drills, linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer ran stride for stride with fullback William Henderson, but was unable to break up a 30-yard pass from Smith. Henderson bobbled the ball before pulling it in for the touchdown.

Linebacker Paris Lenon continued his hard-hitting ways from yesterday, this time teaming up with Marcus Wilkins to stop the 250-pound Najeh Davenport at the line of scrimmage.

Much to the dismay of GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, the injuries continued for the Packers on Friday when running back Adam Tate went down with an injured knee.

Packers Try Their Video Game Skills

989 Sports came to Lambeau Field on Friday to let Packers players test out the new NFL GameDay 2004 video game.

Nick Barnett, Najeh Davenport, Donald Driver and Ahman Green were among the gaming participants. In all, more than 20 players took the opportunity to try out 989's upcoming title, which will be available to the public on August 26.

There were many spirited battles including Green vs. Driver, Davenport vs. Tony Fisher and Torrance Marshall vs. Hannibal Navies.

"All of the Packers had a good time," said Carrie Altuvilla, sports public relations specialist for 989 Sports. "The event was great because it let players have a good break between practices and they gave us a lot of feedback."

Driver, who played the game longer than all involved, enjoys seeing himself in video games and experiments with his versatility.

"I take Ahman out of the game, I take Brett out of the game and put myself in at quarterback," Driver said. "I do all ..

Hunt Expects To Practice Saturday

Still feeling the effects of a bout with acute gastritis, defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt thinks he's close to joining the action at Green Bay Packers training camp.

Hunt reported to camp on time last weekend along with his fellow veterans, but he's been unable to participate in any of the practices thus far due to his illness, which also includes a case of strep throat.

Hunt spent the first three days of training camp under quarantine, so as not to infect his teammates, but has watched the action of the last two days from the sidelines.

He could get on the practice field as early as Saturday, but his participation will be limited as he looks to regain his strength.

"I feel a lot better," Hunt said Friday afternoon. "I'm looking forward to being out here."

With Hunt unable to participate, the Packers have been especially thin along the defensive line where James Lee (hip), Joe Johnson (quadriceps), Terdell Sands (ankle), Rod Walker (should..

Tommy Collins Training Camp Diary - Part I

Heading into the 2003 NFL Draft, Tommy Collins was told by prognosticators that he would get picked up somewhere in the middle rounds.

He wasn't.

Instead he watched both days of the draft unfold without hearing his name called, or even appear across the ticker. Days later, he signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers and started his quest to make an NFL roster the hard way: as an undrafted free agent.

The odds are against him, but Collins' goal is hardly unattainable. Just last season the Packers had three undrafted free agents make the opening day 53-man roster: Kevin Barry, Tony Fisher and Marcus Wilkins. By the end of the year, Erwin Swiney also had seen action.

Helping his cause, Collins comes to training camp with something every football team needs: versatility.

At the University of Connecticut, the 6-foot-3, 252-pound Collins played his first three seasons at fullback, which is his primary position on the Packers roster. But ..

Training Camp Report - July 24, 2003

The 700-plus fans that came out to watch the Green Bay Packers' Tuesday morning practice were treated to the first live tackling of camp.

In 9-on-7 drills, rookie offensive tackle Brennan Curtin and veteran defensive end Chukie Nwokorie clashed with such force that their facemasks stuck together and had to be separated with help from quarterback Brett Favre -- much to the delight of the railbirds.

Second-year halfback Najeh Davenport showed off both his power and speed by breaking three tackles en route to a 20-yard gain that had the offense cheering.

But the defense had its moments as well, like when second-year linebacker Paris Lenon stopped running back Adam Tate in his tracks with the most thunderous hit of camp to date.

Lenon said afterward that he looks to make plays, not just deliver crushing blows, but "if you get a big hit during the process, that's just a bonus."
Favre Likes Packers' Chances In 2003

It's hardly a secret that Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre doesn't much look forward to training camp anymore. And for that you'll have to forgive him.

Thirteen years in the NFL will do that to a guy.

But make no mistake, Favre still lives for game days and yearns to get back to the Super Bowl. And if the early energy of training camp is any indication, Favre thinks he's leading a team that has the potential to get there.

"I like our chances," Favre said Wednesday in his first meeting with Wisconsin media since June mini-camp.

"We have a real young team, but there's a lot of potential there on both sides of the ball. And I know it's (just) three practices, but you always can tell. This is 13 years for me, and these guys are flying around."

While the nightmare playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons still lingers amongst the memories of 2002, it can't be ignored that the Packers return several key players from a team that won 12 ga..

Training Camp Report - July 23, 2003

Approximately 650 fans showed up at Clarke Hinkle Field to watch the Green Bay Packers continue training camp workouts Wednesday.

The early focus of the morning practice was on the running game, but it wasn't long before quarterback Brett Favre started slinging the ball around the field with his trademark velocity.

On several occasions Favre went in the direction of second-year wide receiver Javon Walker. Twice, Walker made great efforts to get his hands on passes nearly out of his reach, but wasn't able to pull them in. But Walker later displayed soft hands when he pulled in a 10-yard rocket from Favre near the right sideline.

Several defenders also showed the ability to get to the football. Rookie Chris Johnson used his speed to jump in front of fellow seventh-round draft pick Carl Ford and break up a Favre pass. And fifth-round pick Hunter Hillenmeyer jumped out from his linebacker position to knock down an Akili Smith pass intended for wide receiver..

Lambeau Field Atrium Eateries Open For Business

As the Packers cleared the field following the first session of two-a-days Tuesday, four locally based eateries located within the Lambeau Field Atrium opened their doors for business.

"We're real excited to finally get to this point," director of Atrium business Steve Klegon said. "It's been a long time, a long process, but the Atrium really offers a great amenity to the people that are coming out here for training camp, especially during the two-a-days when they have practice in the morning, have a break, and then have practice again. It gives them a chance to stay on the property and get something to eat."

The eateries boast a wide selection of local favorites for fans with almost any appetite.

Brett Favre's Two-Minute Grill offers fans great Cajun favorites like jambalaya from Favre's family recipes, or their famous steak sandwiches.
Wolf: Favre 'Too Young To Retire'

Former general manager Ron Wolf attended the Green Bay Packers' training camp practices Tuesday on the invitation of current general manager and head coach Mike Sherman.

Wolf said he was in town to fulfill his duty as a team consultant. And after watching the Packers' morning practice, the man responsible for bringing Brett Favre to Green Bay, was asked when he thought the three-time MVP might leave the town and the game.

"There's an old country and western song, 'Who's Going To Fill Their Shoes?' I'm sure the Packers are wondering about that, too," Wolf said. "But he's too young to retire. I can't imagine him retiring."

Wolf then added, "You know, you people up here are spoiled because you have the best there is at the most important position in the game. You need to go to some of these other places and see exactly what they play with, and you can appreciate how good he really is."

Clifton, Tauscher Get Physical At Practice

It was expected that when veterans arrived at Clarke Hinkle Field to begin full-squad training camp practices Tuesday, offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher would be among the mix.

What wasn't predicted was that they'd be mixing it up.

But that's just what happened. Making their returns from severe injuries that shortened their 2002 seasons, Clifton and Tauscher took part not only in individual drills, but in 11-on-11 situations, exceeding most everyone's expectations. Even their own.

"At first we didn't know if we were going to do the team periods," Clifton said, "but Tausch and I talked to (GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman) and said, 'You know, this is something we feel like we need to be doing right now, to get ready for the season.' And they let us go, and we handled it fine."
Training Camp Report - July 22, 2003

Green Bay Packers training camp got into full swing Tuesday with the arrival of veterans to the practice field. Approximately 750 fans lined the fences to watch the team engage in a pair of pads practices.

Among the biggest highlights of the morning practice was the return from injury of offensive tackles Chad Clifton (pelvis/hip) and Mark Tauscher (knee), both of whom finished the 2002 season on injured reserve.

Although their participation was expected to be limited to non-contact drills, both worked out with the No. 1 offensive unit in team situations, which included 'thud' contact (non-tackling situation).

Both were held out of the afternoon practice for precautionary reasons.

"They did quite a bit out here," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "To see them back is certainly exciting. I know our quarterback is excited."

Marshall Apologizes For Suspension

Meeting with the media for the first time since the NFL suspended him for violating its Substance Abuse Policy, Green Bay Packers third-year linebacker Torrance Marshall made a public apology Tuesday.

"I want to apologize to the coaching staff, my teammates and this organization and the supporters and the fans for the situation I'm in," Marshall said. "I assure you, I am making progress in that situation."

Although he is able to participate in training camp and preseason games, Marshall will be suspended without pay for the Packers' first four regular-season games. He will be eligible to return to the Packers' active roster September 30.

Although a regular on special teams, Marshall has played sparingly at linebacker over his first two seasons.

His suspension comes after two offseason mini-camps in which GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Marshall showed signs of progress at linebacker.

Sherman Comments On Crouch Departure

Following the Green Bay Packers' training camp practice Tuesday morning, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman confirmed that former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch has left the team for personal reasons.

Crouch had participated in the opening three practices of training camp, for rookies and first-year players, over the weekend, but was not in attendance Tuesday when the Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field.

"I talked to him yesterday and we really didn't get into detail," Sherman said. "He just said for personal reasons he didn't want to continue. I said, okay, and we'll leave it at that."

Claimed off reserve/retired waivers by the Packers in April, Crouch's self-imposed departure from an NFL team is his second in as many years.

Last fall, Crouch retired from the St. Louis Rams -- less than five months after the team selected him in the third-round of the 2002 NFL Draft -- because they planned to use him at wide receiver and not quarterback, the posi..

Crouch Leaves Packers For Personal Reasons

Former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch, who was claimed off reserve/retired waivers by the Green Bay Packers in April, has left the team for personal reasons, Packers.com has learned.

An option quarterback star at the University of Nebraska, Crouch became just the third player in NCAA Division-I history to amass 3,000 rushing yards and 4,000 passing yards over a career.

He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft, but announced his retirement less than five months later because he wanted to play quarterback, and the Rams planned to use him as a receiver.

Consequently, Crouch spent what would have been his rookie season out of football.

The Packers claimed him April 18, and allowed Crouch to take the majority of his reps at quarterback in the team's two offseason mini-camps. Crouch also took limited reps at punt returner.

As recently as Saturday, Crouch spoke of his determination to make the team at any ..

Clifton, Tauscher Expected To Participate As Camp Opens

Rookies and first-year players may have graced Clarke Hinkle Field over the weekend, but the Green Bay Packers' 2003 training camp won't really be under way until Tuesday morning, when the veterans come out and the pads go on.

When that happens, offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are expected to be there, severely limited in their practice participation, but closer to the action than they've been in months, before serious injuries ended their 2002 seasons prematurely.

For Tauscher it happened in just the second week of the regular season. New Orleans Saints linebacker Charlie Clemons fell into Tauscher's left knee causing a sprained medial collateral ligament and a 75-percent tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, which required surgery to repair.

Clifton didn't go down until Week 12, when a blind-side hit from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Warren Sapp caused such significant damage to his pelvis and groin that he couldn't get up. While surgery..

Packers Place Third In 'Ultimate Rookie Challenge'

The transition from college to professional sports can be an overwhelming experience. But if results from the latest Ultimate Rookie Challenge are any indicator, the Packers' draft class of 2003 should have a bright future ahead.

Those nine players recently attended the NFL Rookie Symposium in West Palm Beach, Florida. Held each year since 1996, the symposium is a four-day orientation into the NFL for all 262 drafted rookies, giving them a glimpse of what they may face during their NFL careers.

Topics covered in this year's event included finance management, team building, media training, friends and family situations and NFL player policies.

"It was a lot of information at one time," said wide receiver Carl Ford, a seventh-round pick out of Toledo. "They talked about a lot different issues from money, to sex, to family and just your personal conduct when you're out in the public. I definitely got a lot out of it. It was a good time."

Barnett Returns To Practice Field

Only hours after signing a multi-year contract, Green Bay Packers rookie linebacker Nick Barnett was at Clarke Hinkle Field taking part in training camp practices Sunday.

But while the two 75-minute workouts will go down as Barnett's first official appearances of the summer, they weren't his introduction to training camp.

It seems not even an unsigned contract could keep Barnett away Saturday, when Packers rookies and selected veterans kicked things off with an afternoon practice. So rather than imagine what he was missing, Barnett decided to see for himself.

He drove to the Packers' practice facilities, parked his car at a gas station south of Clarke Hinkle Field and watched. That is, until fans gathered along the fence in front of him and he was forced to relocate to the north side of the field.

"How did that story get out?" Barnett asked in amazement when questioned by the Wisconsin media after Sunday's practice. "It was supposed to be low ke..

Training Camp Report - July 20, 2003

Crowds of around 350 watched Packers rookies and first-year players take part in a pair of training camp practices Sunday.

The workouts at Clarke Hinkle Field were the final in-shorts tune-ups before veterans join the fray in conjunction with the start of two-a-days, Tuesday, July 22.

A day after signing his contract, first-round draft pick Nick Barnett was on the practice field for the first time since May, having missed the June mini-camp due to an NFL rule that limits rookie participation until the end of their college term.

Barnett didn't waste time before making an impact, batting down a Craig Nall pass intended for tight end Joey Knapp in 7-on-7 drills.

Nall had better success later on, hitting Knapp on a 7-yard route across the middle.

Akili Smith and Carl Ford connected on a 25-yard slant route that drew cheers from the railbirds. Then Ford showed off his footwork to bring in a 15-yard pass from Eric Crouch along the left sideline..

Sherman Expects Brown To Sign

The Green Bay Packers may have come to terms with rookie linebacker Nick Barnett, but as of Saturday night another player remained unsigned.

Approaching what would be his 10th NFL season, nose tackle Gilbert Brown has yet to agree to a deal but continues to negotiate with the Packers.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said he expects Brown to be under contract "eventually."

"He wants to do what's best for his family and we want to do what's best for the Packers, and sometimes it isn't always the same," Sherman said.

"He's loyal to the Packers, but he's loyal to his family and himself and I don't fault a player for that."

If Brown continues to miss camp, Sherman said that rookie James Lee would benefit from the increased reps in practice.

A fan-favorite, Brown is coming off a season in which he played 12 games and made 36 tackles. Brown hasn't played more than 12 games since 1999.

Smith Starting Over With Packers

Of the three players that handled quarterback duties Saturday afternoon in the Green Bay Packers' first training camp practice of 2003, only one came with NFL regular-season experience.

By those standards, former Cincinnati Bengal Akili Smith was the veteran of the group, compared to Craig Nall, who was the Packers' third quarterback as a rookie in 2002, and Eric Crouch, who spent what would have been his rookie season out of football.

But approaching his fifth professional campaign, Smith finds himself at square one, heading into what is essentially a training camp tryout, after which nothing is guaranteed.

"I really believe that I'm starting over," Smith said Saturday, prior to joining the workout for rookies and first-year players.

"To be honest, I'm here fighting for my (football) life. I have to make the team. I understand that. I've got to get ready to play football."

Recently, there hasn't been much football for Smith to play. N..

Packers Agree To Terms With LB Nick Barnett

The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract with first-round draft pick linebacker Nick Barnett, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Saturday night.

Barnett is expected to join the team in Green Bay and be there when the Packers return to the practice field Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The 29th pick overall, Barnett was the first linebacker selected in the 2003 draft. Once signed, all nine of the Packers' draft picks will be under contract.

As a senior at Oregon State, Barnett led the Pac-10 Conference in tackles with 121.

He became the first linebacker drafted by the Packers in the first round since Wayne Simmons (Clemson) was selected with the 15th overall pick in 1993.

Barnett is expected to compete in training camp for the starting middle linebacker position, with Hannibal Navies handling the strong side and Na'il Diggs starting on the weak side.

Training Camp Report - July 19, 2003

An afternoon practice for rookies and selected veterans marked the start of training camp, Saturday. Approximately 450 fans gathered along the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field to take in the action.

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Akili Smith made his Green Bay debut and shared the throwing duties with Eric Crouch and second-year veteran Craig Nall. Nall was on the Packers practice field for the first time since the end of the 2002 season, having missed both mini-camps while participating in NFL Europe, where he led the league in passing.

In 7-on-7 drills, seventh-round draft pick Carl Ford flashed some sideline speed after a 10-yard pass from Nall.

Recently-signed wide reciever Kamau Peterson also brought in a Nall pass, but later struggled to keep his footing in the middle of passing routes, which drew the attention of receivers coach Ray Sherman.

Seventh-round pick Chris Johnson broke up and almost intercepted a Nall pass intended for Bri..

Packers Rookies And First-Year Players Report To Training Camp

While two weeks remain before their first preseason game in the green and gold, summer vacation came to an end Friday for the newest members of the Green Bay Packers.

Rookies and selected veterans moved their belongings into the dorms at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis., their home for the next four weeks of training camp, officially marking the beginning of the 2003 season.

"I went in my room and saw the bed, a twin-size bed," said 6-foot-5, 325-pound defensive tackle James Lee. "It's just like being in college again."

The new Packers will practice Saturday afternoon for the first time since mini-camp ended in June. Veterans will report to camp Sunday and to the practice field Monday.

"It's great to be back," said quarterback Craig Nall, who vaulted himself into contention for the backup quarterback position as the leading passer in NFL Europe this summer. "I'm looking forward to another camp and hopefully I can make the squad again."

Shriner's North Team All-Stars Tour Lambeau Field

For Wisconsin high school football players, walking through the tunnel onto the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field may only seem like a dream.

But Thursday, 44 area all-stars saw that dream become reality as they toured the newly renovated home of the Green Bay Packers.

"This is the first time I've been in the renovated Lambeau Field," said Matt White, defensive back from Green Bay West High School, "and as you can see it's pretty nice compared to what it was before."

"It's incredible," added Lee Waechter, North team quarterback from Kewaunee High School. "You get a totally different perspective watching a game here and actually being on the field and stepping where thousands of great football players have been. It's pretty breathtaking."

The tour, which included stops in the Packers locker room, weight room, gym, media auditorium and team meeting areas, was a part of the week's activities leading up to the Shriner's All-Star Game this weekend.

The number of confirmed attendees, which now stands at 113, is believed to be the largest gathering of Hall of Fame members from any sport in one place at one time.

Invitations to attend the event, which is being held in conjunction with the 2003 Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony, was extended to each of the 144 living members of the Hall of Fame by the National Football League and the Hall as a part of the Hall of Fame's 40th Anniversary celebration. NFL Homecoming planners expect the final number of attendees to approach 120.

Carucci: A Glance At The NFC North

Most influential offseason moves: The Minnesota Vikings helped a defense that has ranked as one of the NFL's worst in recent seasons. Denard Walker, a free agent from Denver, gives them the first quality cornerback they've had in five years. Chris Claiborne, a free agent from Detroit, gives them a tackling machine at linebacker. And 6-foot-4, 304-pound tackle Kevin Williams, a first-round draft pick from Oklahoma State, gives them much needed size and strength for the middle of their line.

In February, when the Detroit Lions made Steve Mariucci their fourth coach in 28 months, there was plenty of excitement in Detroit. And why not? Mariucci brought credibility for having helped turn around the salary-cap gutted San Francisco 49ers and for his expertise in working with young quarterbacks. He could be just what the Lions, after a 3-13 season that saw Joey Harrington mostly struggle as a rookie quarterback, need. But Mariucci and Harrington will need the immediate help ..

Random Questions With Donald Driver

Entering his fifth year as a pro, Donald Driver is coming off a breakout season in 2002, jumping from top backup to top receiver during training camp, before developing into one of the league's most explosive playmakers.

He led the Packers in receptions (70), receiving yards (1,064) and touchdown receptions (9) -- all three figures representing career highs, higher than his three-year NFL totals entering the 2002 season. In addition to playing in his first Pro Bowl in 2002, Driver was voted the Green Bay Packers' Most Valuable Player by his teammates.

Also a major player in the community, in 2001 Driver and his wife Betina created the Donald Driver Foundation (www.sundaydriver.net), which targets sick children with unmanageable hospital bills and provides housing for the homeless. In recognition of his extensive work in the community, Driver was also honored as the team's Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2002.

Harlan 'Honored' By Plaza Dedication

For the past three years, Green Bay Packers president and chief executive officer Bob Harlan has finished his workdays by driving around the outside of Lambeau Field and admiring the ongoing stadium renovation, which now stands just weeks away from completion.

The historic venue, originally dedicated in 1957, will be re-dedicated at the Packers' 2003 season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, Sept. 7. And by then, Harlan will have a permanent place within the hallowed grounds.

Wednesday, as part of their 'Rebirth Of A Legend' festivities announcements, the Packers revealed that the main entrance to Lambeau Field will be named the Robert E. Harlan Plaza, with a dedication planned for September 2, at 5:00 p.m.

The decision to so honor Harlan was made by the Packers' executive committee and board of directors, paying tribute to a man who in his 14 years as president led a movement that returned a struggling franchi..

You Asked. Packers.com Answers

It's been a while since we last dipped into the Ask Packers.com mailbag, so let's sort through some of the questions that have been piling up.

In this edition we touch on topics ranging from alternate jerseys, to retired numbers, to the origin of the nickname 'Packers,' to million-dollar salaries.

Before the start of the 2002 season, I read on Packers.com that the Green Bay Packers uniforms may be altered for the 2003 or 2004 seasons. Is this still true or is the article in which I read about this issue false. Or am I completely wrong? -- Donte (New Haven, WI)

The article you refer to ran in May of 2002. It explains that the NFL granted teams the right to create an alternate uniform to be worn in one home game in the 2002 season. The jersey could be a 'classic' (turn-back-the-clock) jersey, or it could be a new design, provided it was created using the team's existing color palette.

Random Questions With Rod Walker

Nicknamed 'Mr. Big' by one of his coaches, Rod Walker has hopes of working as either a probation officer or prison warden, once his playing days are over.

For now, the 6-foot-3, 319-pound defensive tackle is concentrating on breaking into backfields and wreaking havoc on opposing running backs and quarterbacks.

Recently, Packers.com managed to tame 'Mr. Big' for a few minutes as he tackled a few of our Random Questions.

Packers.com: What have you been doing this offseason?
Rod Walker: "I've been traveling, doing some sightseeing. I've done a few camps. I helped Cletidus Hunt with a camp in Memphis. I was at Darren Sharper's golf tournament. That's pretty much it, besides relaxing. I'm going to be spending time with my son over the next few weeks."
Do you watch any Reality TV?
"Yes. I watch all of them. I flip stations. I like For Love Or Money, Anything For Love, Making The Band. I pretty much ..

Random Questions With Ahman Green

Since coming to the Packers from the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2000 season, Ahman Green has blossomed into one of the best running backs in team history.

Already ranked seventh on the Packers career rushing list, with a fourth-straight 1,000-yard season in 2003, Green would move into third all-time, behind only Jim Taylor (8,207) and John Brockington (5,024).

Recently, Packers.com caught up with the two-time Pro Bowler, to see how he could handle our Random Questions.

Packers.com: What have you been able to do this offseason to get your mind off football?
Ahman Green: "I flew in a F-18 with the Blue Angels. I knew somebody who knew somebody that got me in to do a flyover. It was a lot of fun. It's kind of like a roller coaster but better. I didn't get sick, though."

Current Rookies Train Future Rookies

Brian Anderson, a 9-year-old football fan from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was one of over 250 youngsters who came to the NFL Youth Football Clinic to learn something new, run a few drills and get to meet some NFL rookies.

He ended up being hoisted in the air in celebration by a bunch of Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles rookies following a "tackle" in a one-on-one drill in which Anderson, in one swift move, de-flagged a fellow camper, who was carrying a football.

The rookies, who were there as part of the annual NFL Rookie Symposium in Palm Beach, Fla., reacted as if they had just won the Super Bowl, nearly suffocating poor Anderson before lifting him up toward the sky in jubilation.

"It felt good," Anderson said moments after the play, later admitting that he would root for the Lions since they rooted for him.

Tickets Available For 2003 Hall Of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony

Only a few thousand tickets remain for the 2003 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony to be held Sunday, August 3 in Canton, Ohio.

Among those to be enshrined are former Packers legend James Lofton. Lofton was the No. 1 draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 1978, and became the first NFL player to catch a touchdown pass in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

In 16 seasons as a pro, Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards - an average of 18.3 yards per catch. His career-reception yardage mark was an NFL best at the time of his retirement, while his 43 games with 100 or more yards receiving ranked third.

During his nine seasons in Green Bay, Lofton was selected to play in seven Pro Bowls. He led the Packers in receptions each year except one (1979), while gaining more than 1,000 receiving yards in five of those years. Many of his 75 touchdown receptions came on long passes when he simply outran the opposition.
