Packers Say 'Thank You' To Brown County Residents

Over 30,000 fans filtered into Lambeau Field as the Green Bay Packers invited its Brown County neighbors to check out the newly renovated stadium and atrium addition, Sunday.

"The reason we're here today is to say Thank You," Packers president and CEO Bob Harlan said during the Brown County Appreciation Day ceremony. "Thank You to those who helped pass the referendum, those who helped build this beautiful new facility, and a special Thank You to you, the people of Brown County, who made all this possible."

The free event was open to the public and included free carnival rides for children, free live music and a special thank you program held inside the atrium.

In addition, fans were encouraged to take a self-guided tour throughout Lambeau Field to take in all the improvements made during the $295 million redevelopment project funded by the residents of Brown County.

"It was absolutely worth the money," said Dan Rogers, a Green Bay resident. "The ..

Marques Anderson: Devoted Safety

A person need only look as far as Marques Anderson's muscular back to find out what is important to the 24-year-old safety: family, wisdom, virtue, Jesus.

The four most important things in Anderson's life are tattooed on his back, scripted in Japanese. A fifth tattoo in English, the surname "Anderson," stretches across the California native's shoulder blades.

"I got the tattoos because those are the things I really believe in," said Anderson.

Belief itself is something that means a great deal to the UCLA alumnus.

"I grew up in a religious family," the second year pro said in reference to his parents, Maurice and Susan, and sisters Andrea, 25, and Ashley, 16. "My mom actually just got her doctorate in biblical philosophy and education. My faith is something that really keeps me rooted, keeps me grounded."

While religion keeps Anderson grounded spiritually, in actuality, it transported him half way around the world. His desire to put faith ..

Mike McKenzie: A Feeling Of Flair

Life in the NFL is not always as luxurious as it seems. For all the opportunities it provides, the world of professional football can sometimes put a damper on a players' enthusiasm. Contract negotiations, injuries and other distractions can make it hard for a player to keep optimistic and value the game of football like he once did.

However, there is still a large contingency of players whose love for the game never fades. After all, what could be better than playing football for a living?

Meet Packers cornerback Mike McKenzie. You may have spotted him laughing on the sidelines with one of his teammates or cruising around Green Bay in one of his classic cars. Wherever you've seen him, there's a good chance that he was enjoying life. McKenzie is a player who is always happy to be on the football field or just about anywhere else for that matter.

AP Story: Titans Beat Packers 27-3 After Weather Delay

Steve McNair made only a cameo appearance Thursday night. Brett Favre and Ahman Green didn't even do that.

They were the only ones who had a short night, however.

McNair took three snaps in the Tennessee Titans' 27-3 victory over the Green Bay Packers that included a 2-hour, 33-minute lightning delay and didn't end until early Friday morning.

Torrential rains made for a messy first half and maybe a fourth of the 69,126 fans -- who got a double dose of disappointment when Favre and Green sat out altogether -- stuck around to watch play resume at 11:01 p.m. CDT.

They got a hearty laugh when the two-minute warning was announced one play later, and let out a huge cheer when it was announced that the usual 12-minute halftime would last only one minute.

The fourth quarter didn't start until after midnight and the game ended at 12:46 a.m.

The teams cleared the field with 2:05 left in the first half when thunder shook the stadium wi..

Packers Notebook - Brown Looking Good For 53

Once thought out for the season, nose tackle Gilbert Brown appears on the verge of completing a comeback that would make even John Travolta envious.

Trying to prove that he can contribute this season despite a biceps muscle that is torn at the elbow, Brown made a compelling argument last weekend with his play against the Carolina Panthers. Seeing limited action with the first-team defense, Brown played a critical role in the Packers' goal-line stand, getting in on a pair of tackles.

"If you didn't tell me he was hurt, I wouldn't have known," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "He played actually his best performance that I can recall this season, and also going back into later last season."

Having proved what he can do on the field, the next step is to see if Brown's injured arm can recover from that dose of live action quickly enough to do it again.

Because of the short turnaround between games, Sherman said Brown is unlikely to get any playing ti..

Training Camp Report - August 27, 2003

The Green Bay Packers took practice inside Lambeau Field Wednesday for a brief walkthrough on the eve of their final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.

Thursday's game will be the final opportunity for players trying to win a roster spot to prove to the coaching staff that they, in fact, do belong on the team. The Packers will cut the roster down to the NFL-mandated limit of 53 players Sunday.

"You have to look at my situation and I need to prove myself every day," said safety Jeremy Unertl, who has recently been sidelined with a groin injury. "I think this game is a great opportunity to get a lot of reps and really make some plays, and I'm excited about being able to do that.

"I think I've shown enough for them to be able to make an evaluation of me, however, I need to play this game in order for them to make a further evaluation and to help my chances even more."

Training Camp Report - August 26

Over 450 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field for the Packers' final day of training camp practices, Tuesday.

In order to reach the NFL-mandated limit of 65 players before the 3 p.m. (CDT) deadline, the Packers made 15 roster moves before practice, including the release of tight end Tyrone Davis, defensive linemen Steve Warren and Terdell Sands and safety Jacoby Shepherd.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Warren's history of injury contributed to his release. Warren started training camp on the physically unable to perform list with back problems.

"Steve's a good kid, he's a good athlete," Sherman said, " but (injury) certainly plays a part. You could be a hell of a football player, but if the health factor plays into it, that can be a deterrent for your career.

'He did a nice job here, he worked hard and I wish him well."

Quarterback Akili Smith also was let go Tuesday.

Training Camp Report - August 25, 2003

Nearly 500 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field as the Packers returned for one of their final training camp practices, Monday.

With Marco Rivera out with a sprained medial collateral ligament, starting tackle Mark Tauscher took a few reps at right guard, with Kevin Barry filling Tauscher's spot at right tackle. Bill Ferrario took the majority of reps at guard however, and should get the start against Tennessee this Thursday.

"I'm just going out there to prove what I can do," Ferrario said about filling in for Rivera, "the rest is up to the coaches."

It didn't take newly-signed defensive back Scott McGarrahan long to make an impact in his first practice with the team, picking off a deep ball from Akili Smith.

The Packers signed McGarrahan to fill a depleted role at safety, following Saturday's injuries to both Darren Sharper (groin) and Jacoby Shepherd (thumb).

"He's a good special teams player," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said...

Rivera Suffers MCL Sprain

Injured in the Green Bay Packers' preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers, Saturday night, offensive guard Marco Rivera has been diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament.

"It's not as bad as we originally thought," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said after the game, "but it's still serious."

Rivera suffered the injury when a player fell into his left knee on the Packers' second possession. After being examined on the field, he walked off with some assistance from the Packers' training staff.

Rivera is scheduled to undergo an MRI Sunday, at which point the full extent of his injury will be better understood.

"The doctors say there could be a chance he could be ready for the Minnesota game (Sept. 7), believe it or not," Sherman said. "When he has his MRI, we will have a clearer picture of where he is."

Rivera isn't a stranger to MCL injuries. He played through tears in both knees last season and was awarded Pro Bowl honors.

AP Story: Packers Drop Preseason Home Opener To Carolina, 20-7

Super-sized nose tackle Gilbert Brown helped stuff Stephen Davis four times on a goal-line stand Saturday night in his first test to see if he'll be able to play with a ruptured right biceps.

Brown played the first quarter of Green Bay's 20-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Carolina (3-0) got outstanding performances from backups Chris Weinke and Walter Young, who hooked up five times for 88 yards, including an 11-yard go-ahead touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Packers (2-2) lost two Pro Bowl performers in safety Darren Sharper (groin) and right guard Marco Rivera (sprained left knee) and Carolina lost defensive end Michael Rucker (sprained left ankle) and free safety Deon Grant (left quadriceps strain).

Brown wants to play through his injury rather than undergo season-ending surgery even though he's risking permanent loss of strength in the arm.

Packers Notebook - Home Sweet Home

The Packers are always happy to play at Lambeau Field, but after three road games in 12 days, being back home should feel especially nice

Or, even better than that.

"'Nice' to be back isn't the word," quarterback Brett Favre said this week. "It's been a rough preseason as far as our traveling and stuff goes."

He ain't kidding.

In addition to the regular hassles of road trips, the Packers' first preseason game at Canton was called in the third quarter due to a severe lightning storm, and last week's trip to Cleveland was complicated by a nine-hour blackout.

Not to mention that with all of the preseason games kicking off at night, the Packers' team charter hasn't touched back down in Green Bay any earlier than 2 a.m.

The good news for the Packers is that they don't hit the road again until the third week of the regular season, when they head south to face the Arizona Cardinals, September 21.

Safety Spot Still To Be Settled

Antuan Edwards will get the start Saturday night against the Carolina Panthers, but that doesn't mean he's won the safety spot opposite Darren Sharper, just like it didn't mean anything last weekend when Marques Anderson started against the Cleveland Browns.

Locked up in what is arguably the Packers' most hotly contested position battle, Edwards and Anderson have shared the reps with the No. 1 defense throughout training camp, and likely will continue to do so right up to the first week of the regular season.

"We'll just let the thing play itself out," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said this week. "There's no need for me to make decisions today, because I don't have to ... If this was a quarterback position it would be a little bit different, but it's a safety position and we're going to wait it all the way out to see what happens."

Sherman indicated that he's seen positives in both players this preseason, but neither has pulled noticeably ahead of the other..

Chatman Leads Chase At Punt Returner

With just over a week remaining until NFL teams cut their rosters down to 53 players, Antonio Chatman is the frontrunner in the race to be the Green Bay Packers' punt returner on opening day.

And while the former Arena Football League standout has yet to win the job outright, he's already won the confidence of GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman.

Sherman indicated that he will give several players the opportunity to return punts in the Packers' two remaining preseason games. However, if no one else rises up to supplant Chatman, the Packers may already be improved from last season when Darrien Gordon, J.J. Moses and Eric Metcalf combined for an average of just over 4 yards per return.

"I do believe we're in better shape here now than we've been since we had Allen Rossum," Sherman said in reference to the 2001 season. "(Chatman) has done a good job, so you kind of take your breath and say, 'Okay, now let's make sure we get the right guy and let's experiment.'"

Walls Finds Fit In Green Bay

If it wasn't for a phone call he received last February, Wesley Walls might still have been playing for the other guys this weekend instead of the Green Bay Packers.

It was then that the all-time touchdowns leader in Carolina Panthers history was told by his team of seven years that it was going in a different direction.

"They wanted me to take a reduced role and (asked) could I handle it and take a step back from the starting position," Walls explained this week. "They were going to bring in some new guys and were going to try to replace me basically ... They said, 'How about we release you and you go try to find another place, maybe in an offense that better suits your skills?'"

Signed by the Packers August 5, Walls didn't find a starting job in Green Bay, but he believes he's found that perfect situation.

Playing behind Bubba Franks, Walls gives the Packers another legitimate scoring threat, especially when the offense lines up in two-tight end..

Lambeau, Lombardi Statues Installed At Lambeau Field

Two of the most famous figures in Green Bay Packers history have returned home to Lambeau Field, and this time it's for good.

Officially to be unveiled Wednesday, August 27, bronze statues of Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi were installed in the atrium plaza at Lambeau Field, Friday, signifying that the two-year stadium renovation project is nearly complete.

"It's definitely something I've anxiously been waiting for," said Packers president and CEO Bob Harlan. "I had trouble sleeping last night. I was up at 4 a.m. and on the treadmill, just waiting to see these beautiful statues installed. It's just a great feeling to see everything coming together and I know our fans are going to be excited about this new addition to the plaza."

With the glass wall of the atrium as the backdrop, the two statues stand 14-feet tall atop three feet of steps and a 4-foot base. Each figure weighs over 2,000 pounds and are the largest bronze figurative sculptures to date for..

Training Camp Report - August 22

In preparation for their first home game of the preseason, the Green Bay Packers took practice inside Lambeau Field, Friday.

For rookies, Saturday night's game will provide their first game experience at the historic stadium.

"It's definitely going to be a great experience," rookie linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer said. "Everybody I talked to after I was drafted by the Packers said you won't really know what it's like to be a Packer until you've played a game in Lambeau Field. So tomorrow's going to be exciting."

According to Hillenmeyer, there's more on the line than just a great experience. Only two games remain before the Packers cut their final roster down to just 53 players.

"It's also a great opportunity for a lot of the rookies and younger players that are trying to get a spot on the team," he said. "We've got to go out there and make some plays because it's coming down to crunch time and we're running out of opportunities."

Tommy Collins Training Camp Diary - Part V

Last weekend rookie fullback Tommy Collins was playing in just his second preseason game with the Green Bay Packers.

All of a sudden, he's days away from what could be his last.

August 26, NFL rosters will be reduced down to 65 players. Five days later, only 53 will remain.

In his previous training camp diary, Collins described the experience of his first NFL preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. In this edition he reviews last weekend's game against the Cleveland Browns, discusses how he made it through the August 14 blackout and explains his emotions as the first round of roster cuts draws near.

Tommy Collins: I was in my hotel room with Jerry Wisne when the blackout hit in Cleveland.

All of a sudden the TV and the clock cut out and we kind of looked at each other and said, "What's going on here?" We figured we must have a power outage in the hotel, but a few minutes later I looke..

Training Camp Report - August 21

The Green Bay Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field in shells Thursday for the final set of two-a-days before hosting the Carolina Panthers, Saturday night.

Donald Driver dazzled the nearly 800 fans lining the fences during the morning practice, consistently hauling in bullets thrown by Brett Favre.

Driver first connected with Favre along the left sideline, beating cornerback Derek Combs for a 30-yard reception, and later was forced to change directions to catch up with the pass on a crossing route in the middle of the field, good for 20 yards.

Quarterback Akili Smith placed a perfectly thrown ball in the hands of Mike Horacek, just out of reach of Jacoby Shepherd for a 45-yard score.

Inside the red zone, it was Favre again carving up the defense, first dropping a pass over the shoulder of Javon Walker in the left corner of the end zone.

On the ensuing play, Herbert Goodman climbed the ladder to pull down a pass just over the head of cor..

Lambeau Field Renovations Nearly Complete

With the renovation almost complete, Lambeau Field will come alive Saturday night when the Green Bay Packers host the Carolina Panthers.

Complete with a new club level -- still under construction during the football season last year -- that seats over 3,000 fans indoors, a new atrium which houses the Packers Pro Shop and the soon-to-open Packers Hall of Fame, wider concourses, new scoreboards and more, Lambeau Field is certainly a sight to behold.

And on Saturday night, fans will get their first sneak-peek of the stadium that will officially be rededicated September 7, vs. the Minnesota Vikings.

"In terms of fans and gameday usage, we'll be ready to go (Saturday)," said John Jones, Packers executive vice president & chief operating officer. "All of the new restrooms, all the new seating will be online. We'll still be doing some work in the Hall of Fame and in Curly's Pub and other areas, but for fans, in terms of game experience, the stadium should be rea..

Training Camp Report - August 20

The hot August sun was beating down on all of Clarke Hinkle Field as the Green Bay Packers returned for two practices Wednesday, but the spotlight was on defensive tackle Gilbert Brown.

Just 11 days after tearing his right biceps in the Green Bay Packers' second preseason game, Brown returned to the practice field wearing a special brace designed by head trainer Pepper Burruss.

Brown's participation was limited to drills during the first half of the afternoon practice, but he saw some action in 9-on-7. The Packers will check his status in the morning Thursday to determine the next step in his comeback attempt.

"He did a nice job out there," Sherman said. "We'll have to wait and see how he feels tomorrow and whether or not (the arm) swells up."

In addition to Brown, the Packers are also keeping an eye on defensive end Joe Johnson, who per usual sat out the morning session but returned in the afternoon during the full pads practice.

Brown Practices, Continues Comeback Attempt

Gilbert Brown didn't do all that much in the Green Bay Packers' afternoon practice Wednesday, but his limited participation was a lot for a guy whose season was supposed to be over August 9.

Getting on the field for the first time since he ruptured his right biceps in the Packers' second preseason game, Brown took part in less than half of the afternoon practice, getting in a few reps during 9-on-7.

Brown reported no additional pain, and even shed a brace specially-designed to restrict his movement.

Asked whether he passed the first test in his bid to play this season Brown said, "I haven't got my grade from the principal yet, but I think I did ... I felt good. I went out and (played) and there ain't too much more I can say. It's up to (GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman) now."

Having refused -- for the moment anyway -- surgery that would repair his arm but end his 2003 season, Brown is trying to prove that he can be a difference-maker on defense, even w..

Sitting down to take your questions will be Packers president/CEO Bob Harlan, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and wide receiver Carl Ford.

Harlan's chat will lead things off at 9 a.m. CT. Gbaja-Biamila will conduct his chat around 10:45 a.m. CT, with the rookie, Ford, closing it out around noon CT.

Exact starting times are subject to change.

Training Camp Report - August 19

Nearly 800 fans braved one of the warmest days of training camp thus far as the Green Bay Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field for a full pads practice, Tuesday afternoon.

"We haven't had a whole lot of hot practices, so this week I moved them back to have the heavy practice in the afternoon, and we'll do it for the rest of the week," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said.

"We started last season against Atlanta and we played in a pretty hot and humid ballgame, and then this year, obviously we could have the same weather against Minnesota, then you've got Arizona, and so forth. So practicing in the heat, we're trying to challenge their mental toughness. They passed the test today. I thought they did a nice job."

The Packers started with 9-on-7 drills where Brett Favre hit tight end Wesley Walls for a 20-yard pick-up. Favre later had a pass picked off by linebacker Torrance Marshall in the middle of the field.

Brown Will Attempt Comeback

When Gilbert Brown ruptured his right biceps in the Green Bay Packers' second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, August 9, it was supposed to be a knockout blow to the rest of his 2003 campaign.

When it's all said and done, it still might be. But less than 10 days after sustaining the injury there remains hope that Brown will return even after most had counted him out.

Monday night, Packers medical staff and Brown himself confirmed that the 10th-year NFL veteran is bypassing surgery and rehabbing the injury instead with the intent of returning to the field this season. He is slated to participate in the team's Wednesday practice to monitor his progress.

There are no guarantees of course that the comeback attempt will last throughout the week, but that won't stop Brown from trying.

"It's not going to be an easy road for me," Brown said Monday. "But this is what I love to do. I love to play football, so I'm going to give it a try and see..

Training Camp Report - August 18

Due to turf aeration on Clarke Hinkle Field, the Green Bay Packers moved to Ray Nitschke Field for the first time this season for two non-contact practices, Monday.

The defensive line got a much-needed boost, returning two veteran linemen -- defensive end Joe Johnson and defensive tackle Rod Walker -- along with newly-signed defensive tackle Larry Smith.

"It's nice to get that contingent back on the field," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "Larry's a big man, he's got good length and it looks like he uses his hands pretty well. I'm anxious to see what he can do with pads on."

In team drills, defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt broke through the line to stop Herbert Goodman in the backfield and later picked up a would-be sack on quarterback Craig Nall.

Brett Favre found Donald Driver in the middle of the field for a 10-yard gain and twice connected with Robert Ferguson, first for a pick-up of 20 yards over cornerback Al Harris along the left sideline..

Training Camp Report - August 17

As training camp nears its end and the regular season looms just over the horizon, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman altered the practice schedule Sunday to resemble more closely the regular season's weekly activities.

Veterans were given a break from the heat as they took part in game-film study as well as weight and conditioning workouts with strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin.

But it was back to the field for the Packers' rookies and selected veterans, as nearly 900 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field for a full-pads practice.

"They (rookies and selected veterans) aren't going to get a chance to get as much work as I'd like in the upcoming game with Carolina," Sherman said. "The veterans are going to play a little more, so this affords me the opportunity to look at some guys."

Smith Looking For Fresh Start

At 82 degrees, plus humidity, it wasn't exactly cool on Clarke Hinkle Field when the Green Bay Packers had their afternoon practice for rookies and selected veterans Sunday, but it felt that way to Larry Smith.

After working out with defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, the former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle called the Northeast Wisconsin weather "great."

He may feel differently in October, of course, when winter hits, but for now the cooler climate is just one of the reasons Smith is excited to be in Green Bay.

"It's not like the hot weather down south," Smith said. "I feel like I could run all day in this weather."

That's not something Smith was able to do July 27, when he collapsed from heat exhaustion on the Jaguars' second day of training camp.

Smith didn't want to discuss that incident Sunday, saying only that it was due to dehydration.

"That's in the past," he said. "I'm in Green Bay now. I just want to concen..

AP Story: Packers Top Browns, 38-31, In Cleveland

Kelly Holcomb and Tim Couch certainly didn't make things any easier for their coach.

Cleveland's two quarterbacks, neck-and-neck in their fight to be the starter, both played well in their final auditions for Butch Davis before the Green Bay Packers beat the Browns 38-31 in an exhibition Friday night.

Holcomb started and threw two TD passes in the first quarter before being replaced by Couch, who completed his first four passes - the last a 20-yard TD to Kevin Johnson - to give the Browns (0-2) a lead in the second quarter.

Green Bay's Brett Favre went 9-of-14 for 102 yards and threw one TD pass in his three series with the Packers' first-team offense, which was at full strength for the first time this preseason.

Ahman Green rushed for 55 yards and scored on a 1-yard run for the Packers (2-1), who rallied behind TD runs from Herbert Goodman and Nick Luchey in the third quarter.

Packers-Browns Will Play As Scheduled

The Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns will play their preseason game as scheduled Friday night, at 7 p.m. CT, team officials confirmed this morning.

The status of the game was left in doubt Thursday night after a power outage hit much of the northeastern United States and parts of Canada.

Cleveland was without power from approximately 3 p.m. CT Thursday afternoon to 12:15 a.m. CT Friday morning.

The Packers had arrived at the team hotel no more than 10 minutes before the power went out, Thursday afternoon.

Players and coaches passed many of the hours that followed in the hotel lobby, mingling and playing cards.

A meal was served and a team meeting was held as planned. Some of the position meetings were rescheduled to Friday morning.

Packers Notebook - Starters Reunite On Offense

For the Green Bay Packers' offense, the theme of Friday night's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns will be 'Together Again.'

Offensive tackles Chad Clifton (pelvis/hip) and Mark Tauscher (knee) are expected to make their returns from injuries that ended their 2002 seasons, while wide receivers Donald Driver (hamstring) and Robert Ferguson (tailbone) will make their first game appearances of the 2003 preseason after sustaining minor injuries during training camp.

With those key players active, the Packers will be able to put their 11-best offensive players on the field at the same time for the first time since the second game of the 2002 regular season.

It was in that game, against the New Orleans Saints, that Tauscher suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ever since, the Packers have been patching holes in their starting offense.

"I really didn't think about that," quarterback Brett Favre said this week. "This will be the first tim..

Packers-Browns Game To Proceed As Scheduled

As of 8 p.m. CT Thursday, the power was still out in Cleveland, but plans for the Packers-Browns preseason game were still on.

It was just after 3 p.m. CT, less than 10 minutes after the Packers arrived at the team hotel, that a power outage, reportedly originating in the New York area, hit Cleveland along with much of the rest of the northeastern United States.

Power is expected to be restored by Friday morning, and the Packers' preseason game should proceed as scheduled, Packers officials said.

Although some team meetings were rescheduled, the situation at the team hotel was surprisingly normal.

"The guys are just kind of going with the flow," quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell said. "It's a calm situation and they're trying to make the most of it."

In the hours just after the power outage began, players passed the time playing card games and hanging out in the hotel lobby.

Bottles of water were made readily available and a team..

Training Camp Report - August 14, 2003

The Green Bay Packers took practice inside Lambeau Field Thursday for a final walk-through before Friday night's game at Cleveland.

With only three preseason games remaining before the regular season begins, time is running short for players to make a good impression on coaches while cementing themselves a spot on the final roster.

"There's no pressure," said quarterback Akili Smith, who signed a 1-year contract with the Packers after four seasons with Cincinnati. "I've been through too much pressure in my life. Right now it's just time to play football, and play as efficiently as possible. And that's making good decisions and not throwing interceptions."

In his first game with the Packers, Smith, who has the been in the Packers' system for only two months, was 7-of-12 passing for 61 yards with 1 interception vs. Atlanta last week.
Tommy Collins Training Camp Diary - Part IV

He didn't have any carries or catch any passes, but that's often the way it goes for fullbacks.

Even if he didn't light up the scoreboard, rookie Tommy Collins broke new ground in his football career last Saturday night when he made it into the Packers' preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

In the fourth quarter he led the way for running back Herbert Goodman as the Packers fought their way out of their own end zone, putting together a five-minute, 45-yard drive that secured Green Bay's exhibition win.

In his previous training camp diary, Collins discussed the frustration of not getting to play against the Kansas City Chiefs in the lightning-shortened Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, August 4. In this edition, Collins describes what it was like to get into an NFL game, evaluates his play and tries to explain why he lost to linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer in a kicking contest.

Packers Hall Of Fame Nears Completion

Construction on the new Packers Hall of Fame is still ongoing inside the Lambeau Field Atrium, but even without the finishing touches it's a site to behold.

Now more than 90-percent complete, the Packers Hall of Fame will open its doors to the public sometime in early September. Then, patrons will discover exhibits that rival any in the world of sports.

The new Packers Hall of Fame is many things.

The new Packers Hall of Fame is a museum. There are old jerseys and game programs. There's an original wooden bleacher from City Stadium, now known as Lambeau Field. There's a slab of concrete from the original tunnel that players used to enter and exit the playing grounds before the stadium renovation.

There are exhibits representing landmark games, like the Ice Bowl, and landmark events, like LeRoy Butler's first Lambeau Leap.
The Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field Wednesday for the final set of two-a-days before their preseason match-up with the Cleveland Browns, Friday.

Offensive tackles Chad Clifton (pelvis/hip) and Mark Tauscher (knee) participated in both practices for the first time since training camp began, much to the delight of the man they'll be protecting come gameday.

"It's nice to have them back," quarterback Brett Favre said. "I've been practicing with them every day, and it will be different in game situations, but I'm pleased that they're able to come back. It will be interesting to see how they do."

Both tackles are expected to see playing time in Friday night's game.

"I'm ready to go," Tauscher said. "It's getting to the point now that I just want to get out and go. I'm kind of through talking about it. I just want to get back out there and play and just see how things are going to go."

Training Camp Report - August 12, 2003

Over 850 fans lined the fences at Clarke Hinkle Field as the Packers continued training camp practices, Tuesday.

Focused on stopping the run game, the defense stepped up with a high level of intensity during the first set of 'thud' contact team drills.

It began when Chukie Nwokorie stuffed Ahman Green at the line of scrimmage -- the first of two big stops by the 6-foot-3, 288-pound defensive end -- getting the attention of his coaches and teammates.

Nwokorie and Green would meet again on a later play, and with similar results, as Green was again unable to elude Nwokorie in the backfield.

A hyped-up Nick Barnett responded to his teammate's play by busting through the line to stop Keith Burnell in the backfield.

On the ensuing play, Paris Lenon collided with Herbert Goodman, dropping the running back for a loss. Goodman injured his shin on the play but later returned to action.

Training Camp Report - August 11, 2003

It was breezy Monday morning at Clarke Hinkle Field, but that didn't cool down the Packers' efforts in their first practice since defeating the Atlanta Falcons, 27-21, in preseason action Saturday.

More than 800 fans lined up to see the return of Donald Driver, who had been out since July 27 with a strained hamstring.

Although Driver said he's still not 100 percent, that didn't stop him from making the play of the day.

With the Packers working on their two-minute offense, Brett Favre gunned a ball down the right sideline that appeared to be well out of Driver's range.

After coming to an almost complete stop on a stutter move that froze safety Darren Sharper, Driver threw in an incredible burst of speed, scrambling 15 yards after the ball was in the air to make a diving catch for a 50-yard gain.

"I always feel like once Brett throws it in the air, somebody's got to make a play," Driver said. "I wasn't sure how I was going to catch it, but ..

Packers To Move On Without Brown, Westbrook

Last year the Green Bay Packers were in only their second regular season game when offensive tackle Mark Tauscher became the first starter to go down to a season-ending injury.

This year the injury bug didn't even wait that long to bite.

With three preseason games left before the regular season gets under way, the Packers have already learned that they'll be without the services of nose tackle Gilbert Brown and defensive back Bryant Westbrook for the remainder of the season.

Both were injured in Saturday night's preseason win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Westbrook, who in 2000 tore his left Achilles tendon, ruptured his right Achilles in the game's opening drive.

Brown tore his right biceps in the second quarter.

"It's a tough sport," said rookie linebacker Nick Barnett, who was at Oregon State University during the Packers' injury epidemic of 2002, which saw five key players finish the season on injured reserve.

Alert About NFL Game Audio

Many Packers fans have inquired about the availability of game audio (see below if you need assistance), which in the past was provided by the NFL free of charge and made available on Packers.com.

As of August 8, the NFL and NFL.com launched NFL Field Pass, a new subscription-only service for audio and video. Because game broadcasts are included in the package, Packers.com can no longer offer the links free of charge.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause our fans.

All non-game audio will continue to be provided free of charge on Packers.com. We thank our fans for their steadfast support and understanding.

New Decor Offers History Lesson

As head coach and general manager, Mike Sherman's job is to see that the Green Bay Packers succeed in the present and future. That doesn't mean however that his teams should lose sight of the past.

With roots that date back to 1919, even before the birth of the NFL, the Packers are one of football's most storied franchises. But with each passing year, as the team's history broadens, explaining the highlights of the Packers' now 84-year existence becomes a more difficult process.

The Packers are fortunate to maintain a large chunk of tradition in the form of Lambeau Field, the team's playing grounds since 1957. But they lost one link to the past last summer when they moved out of their old offices and training facilities at the stadium's north end and into the current state-of-the-art venue, constructed from scratch on the stadium's east side.

Being ever mindful of the Packers' storied past, Sherman wants to make sure that current and future Green Bay tea..

AP Story: Packers Squeak By Falcons, 27-21

Michael Vick provided a tantalizing glimpse of what the NFL can expect this season.

Vick was 6-for-7 for 110 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Brian Finneran, before the Atlanta Falcons squandered a big lead in their preseason opener, losing to the Green Bay Packers 27-21 Saturday night.

Vick, voted to the Pro Bowl in his first year as a starter, showed no signs of letting up before a raucous Georgia Dome sellout crowd that cheered his every move. Playing just the first quarter, he guided a pair of touchdown drives before another possession stalled out on downs in Green Bay territory.

"We came out early and set the tempo for the game the way we wanted to play,'' Vick said. "We are excited because we did some good things in the first half, and that's exactly what we wanted to see.''

The Packers, coming off a 9-0 loss to Kansas City in a preseason opener shortened by inclement weather, got off to another sloppy start. They trailed 21-3..

Training Camp Report - August 8, 2003

In preparation for their match-up with the Atlanta Falcons, the Green Bay Packers took practice inside Lambeau Field for a brief walk-through before leaving for Atlanta, Ga., Friday.

The Packers will meet Atlanta for the first time Saturday night, since dropping the 27-7 Wild Card Playoff game to the Falcons last January.

"It's hard to swallow that, but we have to look to this year," safety Marques Anderson said. "We have to get better and grow from the mistakes we made last year. This will be a good test. We're excited to get back out there and face them."

Also excited to return to real game action are the newest members of the green and gold. Several rookies and first year players saw their playing time cut short - or never made it in to the game at all - Monday night when lightning and torrential rainfall forced officials to end the game in the third quarter.

Packers Notebook - Smith, Nall To Get Increased Snaps

In theory, the third-quarter cancellation of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game last Monday night hurt equally every Green Bay Packers player that had yet to get in the game.

In reality, it hurt quarterback Akili Smith most of all.

After four struggling seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Smith is trying to resurrect his professional career in Green Bay. But he's been with the Packers for less than two months, and has only weeks left to earn a spot on the team.

Learning a new offense and up against stiff competition in the form of 11th-year veteran Doug Pederson and second-year player Craig Nall, Smith needs all the opportunities he can get.

That's why GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman is determined to give both Smith and Nall increased snaps this weekend against the Atlanta Falcons.

Sherman indicated Thursday that Brett Favre will start the game, getting his usual limited preseason reps, and will be followed by Pederson, as was the case Monday..

Training Camp Report - August 7

Soggy field conditions forced the Packers indoors to the Don Hutson Center Thursday for the final practice in pads before their showdown with the Atlanta Falcons Saturday night.

"We (practiced outside) yesterday and we were slipping and sliding and it was softer (today) than it was yesterday," GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "I hate to do that with fans out there driving up here to watch us practice, but it was in the interest of the players' health."

Returning to the lineup after missing yesterday's practice were fullback Nick Luchey and cornerback Al Harris.

Donald Driver participated in a few warm-up drills with receivers at the beginning of practice, but continued to rest his hamstring while the rest of the team worked out in pads.

Safety Darren Sharper, who suffered a stinger in his shoulder while making a diving tackle on Lamar Smith, July 27, continues to practice with the team but is unlikely to suit up for the game Saturday.

Tommy Collins Training Camp Diary - Part III

He'd been through mini-camps and offseason opportunity sessions. He'd lasted through two weeks of training camp practices.

And last Monday, Green Bay Packers rookie fullback Tommy Collins thought he finally was going to get a taste of an NFL game, if only an exhibition.

Unfortunately, Collins was one of a handful of players who never made it into the Packers' opening preseason game before lightning and rain forced the teams off the field, leading to the game's ultimate cancellation.

In his previous Training Camp Diary, Collins discussed his anticipation for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. In this edition, Collins describes what it felt like to be all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Tommy Collins: My first NFL game didn't go exactly as I thought it would. And it was that way for a lot of the guys.

Training Camp Report - August 6

With the off day behind them, the Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field Wednesday to resume training camp practices in front of approximately 650 fans.

Newly-signed tight end Wesley Walls took the field for the first time wearing the green and gold, hauling in a 12-yard pass from quarterback Brett Favre in team drills.

"I can't tell you how many times I've been in meeting rooms, watching the tight ends, thinking what it would be like to play with Favre," Walls said. "I'm going to go home and tell my wife I caught a pass from Brett today. She's going to be excited."

The Packers waived running back Reggie White in order to make a roster spot for Walls.

Returning to the lineup Wednesday were defensive tackle Steve Warren, wide receiver Robert Ferguson and tackle Reggie Coleman.
Wesley Walls made his Green Bay Packers training camp debut Wednesday, feeling not only the effects of 37 years of age, but also the consequence of an offseason of relative inactivity as he waited by the phone for an NFL team to request his services.

"You get rusty," said Walls, who officially signed with the Packers Tuesday. "I've been trying to stay in shape and run on my own, just to get ready for the opportunity ... but it's going to take a while to get back to the football shape that you need to play."

Not that his conditioning needs to return overnight. With four preseason games remaining, Walls has plenty of time to catch his breath.

The important thing for the Packers is that Walls arrived at camp feeling healthy, something that Tyrone Davis (knee) and David Martin (hamstring) currently are not.

Walls Signing Upgrades Tight Ends

For Packers tight ends coach Jeff Jagodzinski, going to practice doesn't get much better than it did Wednesday.

Of course, most position coaches don't watch their corps' Pro Bowl experience go from two to seven overnight.

"It's fun," Jagodzinski said of seeing five-time Pro Bowler Wesley Walls on the Packers' practice field for the first time. "It's like (someone) pulling into your driveway and saying, 'Here's a new Vette to drive.'"

That's Vette as in Corvette, not as in veteran. Although after 14 NFL seasons, Walls unquestionably is that as well.

"He's got a little bit of miles on him," Jagodzinski said. "We've got an older-mileage Vette, but he's still a Vette."

And at this point, vintage is just fine for the Packers. With two-time Pro Bowler Bubba Franks leading the way, the offense doesn't need Walls to be an every-down vehicle, but it could always use extra help cruising the end zone.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Wall..

Packers Hall Of Fame Update

Many Packers fans have wondered about the current availability of the Packers Hall of Fame.

Previously located within the Brown County Veterans Memorial Complex, the Packers Hall of Fame closed its doors at the end of 2002 to prepare for the move to its future site inside the Lambeau Field Atrium.

Construction and preparation are still ongoing, and thus the Packers Hall of Fame is currently closed and will remain so during Training Camp 2003.

The new Packers Hall of Fame is scheduled to open sometime in September 2003. Packers.com will offer further updates as they become available.

Sherman Confirms Signing Of TE Walls

Meeting with the media following the Green Bay Packers' storm-shortened preseason game Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman confirmed that the team has signed veteran tight end Wesley Walls.

Walls, who was an unrestricted free agent, gives the team added depth at the position, where Bubba Franks is the starter coming off two Pro Bowl seasons.

"I think he can bring an awful lot to us," Sherman said. "We worked him out. He had a wonderful workout, showed quickness out of the break. He has great size, great hands."

Over his 14-year career, Walls has been one of the NFL's most consistent tight ends, racking up 430 receptions for 5,069 yards and 57 touchdowns. Now 37 years old, Walls was limited due to injury last season with the Carolina Panthers.

"The key, obviously, for him is to stay healthy throughout the course of the season," Sherman said.

After Franks, the Packers' tight ends of experience are Davi..

AP Story: Packers Fall To Chiefs 9-0 In Lightning-Shortened Game

Priest Holmes looked fine in a brief appearance, and so did Brett Favre as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Green Bay Packers 9-0 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game, shortened Monday night by lightning and torrential rain.

The exhibition opener for both teams also had a sobering moment when Chiefs offensive tackle Willie Jones sustained a head injury late in the second quarter.

A Chiefs spokesman said Jones sustained a head trauma and was being evaluated at Aultman Hospital.

Kansas City had just taken a 9-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Jose Cortez with 5:55 left in the third quarter when several lightning bolts hit near Fawcett Stadium.

Play was halted for nearly one-half hour before NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue decided to cancel the remainder of the game with 5:49 remaining in the third.

Both teams have been involved in similar weather-related exhibition cancellations.

In 1996, the Chiefs had a 14-10 win over Chicag..

AP Story: Lofton Intense, But A Gentleman On The Field

James Lofton was all alone when Jim Kelly picked up the bad snap, scrambled and tossed it his way for a 13-yard touchdown on the Buffalo Bills' first drive of the 1990 AFC championship game.

The rout was on -- the Bills went on to beat the Los Angeles Raiders 51-3 -- and Lofton was on his way to another big game against a former team.

Lofton didn't dance or get in any Raiders' faces after the first of his two touchdowns that day. He just came off the field as he always did, Bills coach Marv Levy recalled.

"You could read it in his face, but he was too much of a gentleman to give them the finger or anything," Levy said.

When Lofton retired in 1993, he had 764 catches for 14,004 yards -- then an NFL record -- in a career that included stops with Green Bay, the Los Angeles Raiders, Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

On Sunday, he'll be one of five inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
"I'd been through the balloting..

Lofton, Classmates Say 'Thanks'

If there was any talk of a thawing out between new Hall of Famer Marcus Allen and Raiders owner Al Davis at the Class of 2003 enshrinement ceremony, it was just that - talk.

"I'd like to thank Al Davis for drafting me," said Allen during his enshrinement speech. But that was the only reference to the owner of the team Allen played for from 1982 to 1992.

Allen, along with former Chiefs coach Hank Stram, Houston Oilers defensive end Elvin Bethea, former Bills and Browns offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure and wide receiver James Lofton, was enshrined today into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Allen's Raider career ended in bitterness, and he went on to play five more seasons with the rival Kansas City Chiefs. Observers might not be able to read much into Allen's brief remark about Davis, but his effusiveness for the Chiefs in his speech might have been intended as a subtle message.

"For the sunset of your career, I couldn't have found a better place ..

Training Camp Report - August 3

In preparation for their first preseason game, the Packers took practice inside Lambeau Field for a brief walkthrough before leaving for Canton, Ohio, Sunday.

"I'm just ready," said cornerback Chris Johnson, who along with the rest of the rookies will be playing in his first professional football game. "We've been practicing for about two weeks against each other. It's going to be something different to hit somebody else from a different team.

"There's going to be a bunch of butterflies the first couple of plays, but after that I'm just going to try to get myself situated and just play ball."

The Packers will make their preseason debut Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs on national television (ABC) in the annual Hall of Fame Game at Canton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).

The next public practice will be Wednesday when the Packers return to Clarke Hinkle Field for two workouts: 8:45-11:15 a.m. (pads) and 2:15-3:15 p.m. (special teams).

Training Camp Report - August 2

The Green Bay Packers returned to Clarke Hinkle Field Saturday for the last two-a-day practice before their first preseason game with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday Night.

Wide receiver Donald Driver, who became a first-time father Wednesday, was back with the team but did not practice, instead working out and running inside the Don Hutson Center.

"It was pretty hard (to leave his new son), " Driver said. "But this is first and foremost, my job. My wife will take care of my little baby. My mother-in-law will be coming in town and then my mom will be in the next weekend after that, so I'll have someone to take care of them while I'm at work."

Driver also has been nursing a sore hamstring and will not play Monday, but will travel with the team to Canton, Ohio.

"I was wishing (that I could play)," Driver said. "But the hamstring was just not to the point where it was ready to go. I just would rather not push it until it's time. I don't want to mis..

Packers Notebook - Driver Will Travel, Won't Play

Just days after he and his wife Betina welcomed their first child into the world, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver will make the trip to Canton, Ohio, for the Hall of Fame Game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Monday night.

The fifth-year veteran won't play however as he is still nursing a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the last six days.

"I was wishing (I could play)," Driver said Saturday, "but the hamstring is just to a point that it's not ready to go. I'd rather not push it until it's time. If I push it, who knows? I don't want to miss the first game of the (regular) season trying to push during the preseason."

Driver hopes to be available by the Packers' second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, August 9. Although he didn't participate in practice, Driver did do some running Saturday inside the Don Hutson Center, and delivered a positive report.

"I ran pretty good," he said. "(But) I'm not 100 percent."

Clifton, Tauscher Continue To Progress

In his ongoing quest to start the Green Bay Packers' 2003 regular-season opener, still more than a month away, offensive tackle Chad Clifton cleared yet another hurdle Friday.

Tripped over it, actually.

Taking part in the team's morning training camp practice at the Don Hutson Center, Clifton became entangled in a pile at his feet at toppled over. Yet the 6-foot-5, 330-pounder got up feeling no ill effects.

For any other player it wouldn't have been anything memorable. Something for the bloopers video, maybe, not the highlights reel.

But for Clifton, a player coming back from severe pelvic and hip injuries that ended his 2002 season, not to mention an offseason knee scope, it was something to boast about.

"Every day," Clifton said, "(I) get a little more comfortable."

It takes plays like that to help him along. As physically debilitating as was the Warren Sapp hit that left Clifton crumpled on the turf of Raymond James Stadium ..

Training Camp Report - August 1

For the second day in a row, wet field conditions forced the Packers to stay indoors at the Don Hutson Center for the continuation of training camp workouts, Friday.

Only two days of practice remain before the Packers kick off the preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday night. And according to GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman, Monday can't come soon enough as the grind of training camp is taking its toll on both rookies and veterans.

"I think today was one of those days people kind of feel sorry for themselves a little bit," Sherman said. "Obviously we're getting to the point where we need to go play an opponent other than ourselves."

Originally slated to practice in shells, Sherman deviated from the schedule by having the team workout in pads Friday as opposed to Saturday.

"I just flipped it because we're getting closer to the game," Sherman said. "This will be our last day with pads before the game and I thought I would give them tomorrow wi..
