Remodeled Lambeau Gives Packers A Major Boost

With the $295 million makeover of Lambeau Field complete, the Green Bay Packers are expecting another banner year when they deliver their annual report to stockholders in June.

The fiscal year ends March 31, and team treasurer John R. Underwood said it's too soon to estimate the windfall or how much it will swell the team's rainy day reserve fund, largely because of player contract bonuses that will soon be doled out.

But he said a preliminary review shows the team will get another boost from the stadium redevelopment, which was completed in late August.

Last year, the Packers reported net income after taxes of about $15.5 million, "and we hope to be somewhere in that neighborhood this year," Underwood told The Associated Press. "But that's largely dependent on some player contracts out there that are ... going to impact how that final number plays out."

Left tackle Chad Clifton is seeking a signing bonus in the $12 million to $13 million range, an..

Tobin: Packers Job 'Something Special'

For two years, Vince Tobin lived the life of a retired man.

During the 2002 and 2003 football seasons, while many of his former colleagues were hard at work, Tobin spent his days traveling and golfing. He even had his retirement home constructed in Goodyear, Ariz.

He just didn't consider himself retired.

Friday, Tobin made official his intent to remain in the NFL, joining the Green Bay Packers' coaching staff as a special assistant and extending a coaching career that is already 24 years long.

"I think it had to be something special," Tobin said of the job that would cause him to put his golf clubs in storage for the winter. "I certainly could have called it a career, but I do think this is going to be special situation, one that's going to be win-win for the Packers and for me. If nothing would have come along that was really this challenging and worthwhile, I would have gone ahead and retired."

Letters From Carucci's Mailbag

Regarding Maurice Clarett, why would someone who claims that his dream is to be in the NFL come to the combine out of shape? He didn't even have enough respect for himself or the NFL to show up in his best physical condition. Why would anyone want to travel to Columbus, Ohio, just to see him after that? -- Diane; Marysville, Ohio

Many coaches, general managers and scouts were just as baffled as you were when Clarett arrived in Indianapolis physically unprepared to take part in combine drills.

Considering the lengths he went to gain draft eligibility, you would think he would have been motivated enough to show every team that he is ready to make the jump to the NFL despite having played barely one season at the collegiate level. Instead, Clarett seemed to reinforce the notion that, as a 20-year-old college sophomore, he does not have the maturity to make the transition.

But if his eligibility holds up between now and the draft, I would anticipate s..

Lee Eager For Fresh Start

Packers defensive tackle James Lee carries with him a reminder in the form of Chinese letters tatooed on the inside of his left forearm that translates to 'Patience is a virtue.'

He says he got it because of all the turmoil that he had to overcome throughout his collegiate football career. Little did he know at the time, that tattoo would help get him through his first season in the NFL, too.

Lee came to the Packers from Oregon State, but before he got there he spent two seasons at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Calif., earning second-team All-America honors his second year.

In his final game there, Lee suffered tears to both his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Those injuries, plus a mishap that forced Lee to miss the first 10 days of OSU's training camp when a former professor failed to turn in a grade, slowed Lee's transition to Division-I.
Butler To Attend Combine As Guest

A shoulder injury in 2001 may have brought an end to his playing career, but two seasons away from football have done nothing to diminish LeRoy Butler's love of the game or his former team.

This weekend, Butler will travel to Indianapolis upon the invitation of GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman to be a special guest of the Packers at the NFL Scouting Combine -- which runs through Tuesday, Feb. 24 -- where he'll donate the knowledge gained over his 12-year NFL career.

"I'm just looking to help out any way I can," Butler said. "I'd like to be able to take a look at some of the defensive backs and see if I can find another LeRoy Butler in that group, someone who the Packers can depend on for years to come."

First a starting cornerback as a second-year player in 1991, Butler became the Packers' starting strong safety in 1992 and held the spot until nine games into the 2001 season when he sustained multiple fractures to his left scapula while tackling Maurice Smith o..

Live Chat To Welcome Lee Remmel, Friday

A day after being named the Green Bay Packers' first official team historian, Lee Remmel will take part in a Live Chat on Packers.com starting at 2:30 CT, Friday.

Remmel has been associated with the Packers for 55 years, first as a reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette and then with the team's public relations department.

The team historian position is the latest of many honors received by Remmel over his career. In 1996, he was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. In 2003, the Packers named the Lambeau Field press box in his honor.

Remmel has enjoyed a working relationship with all 13 head coaches in Packers history. He's one of only 12 individuals to have worked all 38 Super Bowls.

Friday's Live Chat is the first of what will be many opportunities in the near future for Packers fans to interact with Remmel via the team's official website.

Lambeau Field Prepped For Snowmobile Event

Snow on Lambeau Field isn't an altogether unusual sight. But snow makers? That's a little different.

Wednesday morning, crews finished applying the first layer of manufactured snow over Lambeau Field's legendary 'Frozen Tundra' in preparation for the first non-football event to hit the renovated stadium.

March 6-7, round nine of the World Snowmobile Association's Snocross Worldwide Championship will be held at the historic stadium as the main attraction of the Oneida Bingo & Casino Ultimate Lambeau Leap event.

Before the races can begin, Lambeau Field will be covered with approximately 12,000 cubic yards of snow, creating a base snow level that's a minimum of three feet deep to keep from damaging the football field underneath.

Roughly 8,000 cubic yards of snow will be used to construct the snowmobile course itself.

Tuesday night into Wednesday morning snow was primarily added to the north end of the stadium,..

Franks Sets His Goals Higher

Most NFL players that get selected to three Pro Bowls in their first four seasons would probably consider that about as good as you can do. But for Packers tight end Bubba Franks, who has been to Hawaii in all but one of his seasons, has his sights set on becoming one of the league's most dominating offensive players.

Franks, who has hauled in 154 passes for 1,368 yards and 21 touchdowns in his four seasons with Green Bay, believes 2004 will be crucial to his development as one of the most effective tight ends in the league. "I feel like it's time for me to dominate in this league," Franks offered. "I've been to the Pro Bowl three of my four NFL seasons but it's really time for me to go out there and take another step. I want to dominate run blocking and catch more touchdowns and try to set some records."

Originally drafted by the Packers with the 14th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami, Franks has blossomed into one of the NFL's mos..

Brandt: Pre-Combine Player Rankings

Here's a breakdown by position of the key offensive and defensive players who will be at this year's NFL Combine. We also are listing the top players at each position, and players you might not know a lot about (yet).

The combine is one of the rare win-win situations the NFL offers. The teams go and check out every player on display -- one-stop shopping for the draft. But for the players who go, it's even more valuable because they can show off what they can do in workouts for all 32 teams. It's the biggest job fair any college prospect could ever imagine having, and every year players "move up" draft boards thanks to their work.

Kyle Boller, for example, ran and did the field drills and ended up being drafted 19th after being thought of as a second-round pick. He was the opening day starter for the Ravens.

These rankings can and will change after the combine because of physicals (players could have injuries or health problems) and workouts (e.g. a player..

Medical Exams Are Cornerstone Of Combine

When the 2004 NFL Scouting Combine opens Wednesday in Indianapolis, news of 40-yard dash times, bench press reps and vertical leap measurements will steal many of the headlines.

But while important to an athlete's draft stock -- especially lesser-known players trying to get noticed -- those tests are just the gravy of the Combine. The real meat and potatoes are the medical examinations, which arguably have a greater effect on the draft than anything else that will come out of the week-long event.

After all, drills can be re-run and times lowered in individual workouts, while ability can be proven on game tapes, but all of those results are worthless if a physical exam shows that an athlete's body is broken or even on the verge of deterioration.

So while some potential draftees at the Combine skip portions of their workouts, almost none of them miss their physical exams. It's the reason 300-plus players and personnel from all 32 NFL teams get together in In..

Kirwan: What's Next For Drew Henson?

Back in April 2003, it seemed like a pretty shrewd move by Charley Casserly and the Houston Texans to draft Drew Henson with a sixth-round pick. They had more draft picks than they needed for the 2003 season and Charley always has an eye on upgraded picks or multiple picks in years to come. The Henson selection made sense then and it may make sense today if he can get some team to trade for him before April 24. Otherwise, Henson re-enters the draft and the Texans wasted a sixth rounder.

Personally, I would have done it myself because of the circumstances Houston was in. But with the workout in the books, it's not as important to find out how the workout went as to exactly how a team might get the Henson deal done. Remember, the workout was in shorts and he's a talented, well-prepared athlete. You still can't tell if he can do it in pads with pressure in his face. As one scout who went to the workout said to me, "I can't tell who's going to win the U.S. Open by watching them ..

Slowik's Leadership Will Help Defense

So it's been a month now since GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced that Ed Donatell wouldn't be the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator in 2004.

Maybe some of you saw that coming. To others of you, it came as a surprise. But I get the feeling that some Packers fans might be more surprised by Sherman's second decision than the first one: staying in-house to promote defensive coordinator Bob Slowik rather than bringing in a "fresh" face.

Well, take it from a guy who played under Slowik for two seasons, there's no reason to worry. In fact, this is a great, great move, because of all the coaches I have ever played for at any level, Slowik is the most informative.

By that I don't just mean that he's a good instructor. A lot of coaches can tell players how to do something, but good coaches make sure that players understand why they're doing something. And more than anyone else, Slowik made me a smarter player.

Mike Flanagan's 2004 Pro Bowl Diary - Part IV

Mike Flanagan's first Pro Bowl trip was one for the ages.

Despite trailing by 18 points with just 13 minutes left, the NFC all-stars -- including Flanagan, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, running back Ahman Green, tight end Bubba Franks and right guard Marco Rivera -- rallied to beat the AFC all-stars 55-52 in what was the highest-scoring Pro Bowl ever.

Originally slated to be an alternate for the event, Flanagan joined Minnesota Vikings center Matt Birk in Hawaii after Olin Kreutz of the Chicago Bears pulled out due to injury.

Now back in his offseason home of Las Vegas, Flanagan checked in with Packers.com to describe his experience playing in last weekend's game as he wrapped up his Pro Bowl diary.
Pro Bowl Diary, Part IV - February 12, 2004

With Dedication, Ford Looking For Another Shot

Described as a "young Donald Driver" by wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, seventh-round draft pick Carl Ford entered the 2003 preseason hoping to prove wrong all the people who doubted his size, strength and ability to play in the National Football League.

Nearly 10 months after the 2003 NFL draft, Ford is still waiting for that chance.

With six catches and 63 yards in the Packers' first four preseason games, Ford suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in the final preseason game against Tennessee, forcing him to put that dream on hold.

"It was devastating, heartbreaking," Ford said. "When it happened, I knew something was wrong with my knee, but I didn't figure it would be a torn MCL, that's for sure."

With the beginning of the regular season schedule just a week away, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman was forced to place Ford on injured reserve Aug. 31, ending all hopes Ford may have had about returning to the field.

Lambeau Field Atrium Hosts 'Superbowl Of Safety'

Approximately 2,500 people packed the Lambeau Field Atrium as Bellin Health sponsored its fifth annual 'Superbowl of Safety', Saturday.

Fun and interactive displays offered children and parents insights into a variety of safety topics including fire, electrical, gun, toys and pets. Highlights included a drive through Safety Town, fingerprinting and a close-up look at the germs people carry on their hands.

Children received a free mini football with the Packers logo after participating in at least 15 booth activities in addition to registering for the free prize drawing of a bicycle and Packers bike helmets.

The event had a fitness aspect as well. Kids were able to try out their quarterback skills by throwing a football in the Quarterback Toss, shoot a hockey puck at the Green Bay Gamblers Hockey shot, and participate in a fitness obstacle course.

Children were also encouraged to bring their torn or tattered stuffed a..

AP Story: Gbaja-Biamila Shines As NFC Tops AFC In 2004 Pro Bowl

Just 24 hours after arriving in Honolulu, Green Bay Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila -- filling in for Tampa Bay's Simeon Rice who was released from the NFC squad for disciplinary reasons -- shined in his first Pro Bowl performance making six tackles, including two sacks, and forcing one fumble as the NFC topped the AFC, 55-52.

"I'm just going to go out there and play," Gbaja-Biamila said immediately after arriving in Honolulu Saturday. "I would have liked to have gotten some type of preparation -- that's always good to have -- but I'm going to have to go through everything for the first time in the game."

Gbaja-Biamila joined teammates Mike Flanagan, Bubba Franks, Ahman Green and Marco Rivera in Hawaii, marking the most Packers participants in the Pro Bowl since five Green Bay players (LeRoy Butler, Mark Chmura, Antonio Freeman, Roell Preston and Reggie White) took part in the all-star contest following the 1998 season.

Canines Aside, Gbaja-Biamila Set To Participate In Pro Bowl

Having battled through what he calls one of the most trying seasons of his four-year career, Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila found himself with yet another obstacle to overcome late Friday night before putting the 2003 season to rest -- what to do with Ahman Green's dog.

Gbaja-Biamila had been dog-sitting for his friend while Green, Mike Flanagan, Bubba Franks and Marco Rivera were set to represent the Packers at the 2004 NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii, Sunday.

But with the late departure of Tampa Bay's Simeon Rice -- released from the NFC squad for disciplinary reasons -- Gbaja Biamila was the first alternate in line to join his teammates at the all-star game.

"I got the call last night from (assistant to the GM/director of football administration) Bruce Warwick at about 6 o'clock," Gbaja-Biamila said upon arriving in Honolulu Saturday. "He asked me what I was doing this weekend and I said, 'I'm going to California, I'm going back to Cali.' Bruce said..

Mike Flanagan's 2004 Pro Bowl Diary - Part III

Severely injured in the second preseason game of his rookie campaign back in 1996, Mike Flanagan's professional career nearly ended as quickly as it began. But now, eight years later, the Green Bay Packers' starting center is on his way to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Flanagan joins running back Ahman Green, tight end Bubba Franks and right guard Marco Rivera at the all-star event. Quarterback Brett Favre was voted to the NFC all-star team, but will not attend the game due to injury.

Last year Rivera became the Packers' first offensive lineman to be voted to the Pro Bowl since Larry McCarren in 1983. This year the inclusion of Flanagan and Rivera gives the Packers two O-linemen in the Pro Bowl for the first time since 1967, when tackle Forrest Gregg and guard Jerry Kramer were starters.

Originally just an alternate for the event, Flanagan claimed the second NFC center spot when Olin Kreutz of the Chicago Bears pulled out due to an ankle injury. Matt..

Packers Among Best In ESPN's 'Ultimate Standings'

The votes are in and for the second year in a row, ESPN's 'Ultimate Standings' grade the Green Bay Packers as one of the best franchises in professional sports.

Out of a field of 120 teams spanning the four major pro sports leagues (NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB), the Packers rank third overall according to ESPN's standings, behind only the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks of the NBA, and first among NFL teams.

Last year, in the inaugural 'Ultimate Standings' study, the Packers were No. 1 overall.

"Certainly we'd like to be No. 1 every year, but unfortunately from where we started in 2003 there was only one way to go in the rankings and that was down," Packers President/CEO Bob Harlan said. "I think being No. 3 overall and No. 1 among NFL teams is still a significant honor and something we should be very proud of. But that doesn't mean that we won't hope to make it back up to No. 1 in 2005."
The rankings ar..

Favre Named America's 'Tough Guy'

In an issue set to hit shelves next week, Men's Journal confirms what Green Bay Packers fans have known for years.

The magazine has labeled quarterback Brett Favre not just the toughest football player in the NFL, but the toughest guy in America.

Favre, 34, is coming off a 2003 football campaign in which he led the league with 32 touchdown passes and guided the Packers into the NFC Divisional Playoffs despite playing with a broken thumb on his throwing hand in all but six of the team's regular-season games.

Despite the injury, Favre never missed a start in 2003 and hasn't since he took over the starting job in 1992.

All together, Favre has played 210 consecutive games, including playoffs, which is an NFL record among quarterbacks.

By playing 191 consecutive regular-season games, Favre is also the Packers' record-holder in that category, having passed tackle Forrest Gregg (187) las..

Packers To Allocate 12 For NFL Europe

The Green Bay Packers will allocate 12 players to participate in NFL Europe this spring, including 2003 roster players Erwin Swiney and Derek Combs and seventh-round draft pick Steve Josue, Director of Pro Personnel Reggie McKenzie said Monday.

Other players headed to the NFL's developmental league are practice squad player Jason Jimenez, 2003 training camp invitees Tony Donald, Cullen Jenkins and Eric Powell, as well as recent signees Kris Briggs, Corey Parchman, Wilson Thomas, Ralph Turner and Walter Williams.

NFL Europe, which features a 10-game regular season running from April 3 to June 6, provides younger players a chance to get valuable on-field experience while giving NFL teams additional evaluation time.

"If potential NFL Europe players have good strength and weight training and no injuries to rehab, we like to send them overseas," McKenzie said. "Most of these guys haven't played a lot since their college days, and many of them are learning new p..
