Remmel: Ringo's Remarkable Return

A funny thing happened to Jim Ringo, the premier center in Packers history, on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Simply put, he almost didn't make it.

In fact, what was to become his Hall of Fame career almost ended before it began.

The circumstances were these:

A New Jersey native who had been a three-year starter at Syracuse under the esteemed Ben Schwartzwalder, Ringo entered the National Football League draft in 1953 upon completing his collegiate career with the Orangemen and was selected by the Packers in the seventh round -- the 79th player chosen overall.

Ringo, however, did not find his subsequent introduction to professional football particularly enchanting -- or promising, for that matter. In fact, after assessing the competition at his position, he became fearful of his chances for survival.

And, accordingly, he walked out "a couple ..

NFL Europe Week 9 Preview

Week 9 begins with a meeting between NFL-E's first and last place teams when the Berlin Thunder (7-1) travels to Scotland to face the Claymores (2-6), Saturday.

Despite ranking at opposite ends of the standings, both teams are just a few points from being in the other's position. Through eight games this season, seven of Berlin's games have been decided by eight points or less, while six of Scotland's games have also been decided by one score or less.

In the overall series, Berlin -- who clinched a berth in World Bowl XII in Week 7 -- holds the advantage at 6-5, while the Claymores lead the series 3-2 when playing at home.

On offense, Berlin boasts NFL-E's top-ranked offense, averaging 339 yards per game, while also leading the league in scoring with 221 points and 28 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Claymores defense ranks first in the league (30.9%) in forcing opponents off the field on third down.

The game will be broadcast live at 8 a.m. (C..

Packers Announce June Mini-Camp Schedule

The Green Bay Packers revealed the practice times for their upcoming June mini-camp Wednesday.

The Packers are scheduled to have eight days of practice starting Wednesday, June 2, and running through Friday, June 11, with a break over the weekend.

Practices will be held on Clarke Hinkle Field, across Oneida Street from Lambeau Field, and will be free and open to public viewing unless inclement weather and/or poor field conditions force the team indoors to the Don Hutson Center.

Practices inside the Hutson Center are closed to the public due to space limitations.

There is the potential for practice times to shift over the course of mini-camp, so be sure to check back to Packers.com for the latest schedule updates.

The Packers' June mini-camp is the final set of full-squad workouts until training camp.

The Packers have yet to finalize training camp dates, but the preseason period traditionally begins in late July.

Birthplace Of Curly Lambeau Found

For all these years, the birthplace home of Green Bay Packers legend, Earl Louis "Curly" Lambeau, was unknown. But now, thanks to some history detective work, it's been identified by a father and son team who are avid Packers fans.

Not only have Ken and John Calewarts uncovered a piece of Packers history, they also discovered a piece of Green Bay history. The house, located at 615 North Irwin Street in Green Bay, was built in 1868, making it one of the oldest standing homes in Green Bay.

The journey of discovery began in the summer of 2003. After reading a book about Lambeau, Green Bay native Ken Calewarts and his 17 year old son, John, were curious about Lambeau's early childhood home because it was reportedly near Ken's office.

But when they went to the Brown County Register of Deed's office to learn more about the address - 1205 Cherry Street, they found the Lambeau family didn't live there at the time of Curl..

Live Chat To Welcome Ahmad Carroll, Tuesday At 12:30 PM CT

He was the Green Bay Packers' first selection in last month's NFL draft. And now cornerback Ahmad Carroll will become the first of the 2004 rookie class to sit down for a Live Chat on Packers.com.

Carroll will take part in the Live Chat this Tuesday, May 25, starting at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT.

The 25th player chosen overall in the 2004 draft, Carroll is entering the pros after just three collegiate seasons at the University of Arkansas, where he made 140 tackles and four interceptions as one of the top cover-corners in the nation.

Standing 5-foot-10 and possessing blazing speed, Carroll also competed for the Razorbacks track team, earning All-America honors in both the 100- and 200-meters.

Nicknamed 'Batman' since his days playing youth football, when he once leaped over the head of an opposing offensive lineman, Carroll reportedly has a 41-inch vertical leap.

Fans can ask Carroll about these things and more in the Live Chat.

NFL Europe: Week 8 Recap

In what was to become an exciting preview of World Bowl XII, the Frankfurt Galaxy (6-2) fell to the Berlin Thunder (7-1), 31-27, Saturday.

Entering Week 8, the Galaxy needed to win only one of their remaining three games, or have the Rhein Fire (3-5) lose one of their final three, in order to reach NFL-E's championship game against the Thunder, who clinched their spot in the title game in Week 7.

The Cologne Centurions (3-5) secured the Galaxy's fate with a 7-6 victory over the Fire, Sunday, ending all hopes Rhein had of playing in World Bowl XII at their home stadium.

Led by quarterback Rohan Davey, the Thunder out-dueled the Galaxy in their first of two regular-season meetings, forcing Frankfurt to wait until Sunday to know whether it would be playing for the title.

On the day, Davey completed 16-of-25 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Eric McCoo (Philadelphia) had 187 total yards, including a 28-yard touchdown receptio..

Random Questions With Najeh Davenport

In addition to serving as a productive backup to Ahman Green at halfback, Najeh Davenport developed into a top-level kickoff returner over the second half of the 2003 season.

In what he calls one of his best moments as a pro thus far, Davenport provided a huge momentum swing in a key 38-21 victory at San Diego (Dec. 14). Answering a 68-yard TD reception by LaDainian Tomlinson that gave the Chargers a 21-17 advantage early in the fourth quarter, Davenport returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the San Diego 42-yard line. The Packers scored a touchdown two plays later for a 24-21 lead it would not relinquish.

A sprinter on the University of Miami (Fla.) track squad for four years, on the football field Davenport was forced to split time with future high NFL draft picks Edgerrin James, James Jackson and Clinton Portis before moving to fullback on a permanent basis for the last year-and-a-half of his collegiate career.

Week 8 will kickoff earlier than usual when the Scottish Claymores (1-6) and the Amsterdam Admirals (3-4) face off, Friday.

With no hopes of reaching the World Bowl for either team, Friday's match-up features two teams playing for pride.

The Admirals will look to post its first winning season since 1998, while the Claymores hope to play the role of spoiler as they continue to search for their second victory of the season.

Packers tight end Tony Donald leads the Admirals in scoring with four touchdowns on the season.

The game will be broadcast live at 1 p.m. CT on DirecTV, with a tape delay airing at 7 p.m. CT on NFL Network.

Catching Up With Nick Barnett

On the field he's known as Nick Barnett,

It's the opposing running back you'll see him get.

But off the field he'll give your ears some treats,

Transforming into producer/DJ Nick Beats.

He's got his own studio and his own turntable,

Maybe one day he'll have his own record label.

He has over 1,000 records that he holds dear,

Not bad for a guy who made 112 tackles last year.

Add three picks and you've got Packer rookie lore,

Who knows what he'll do for an encore?

For the time being, Nick's chillin' in Green Bay,

But we caught up with him for this Q&A.

NFL.com: Where are you spending your time this offseason?
Barnett: Green Bay. It's my first offseason here, so I'm staying. I'll go back to California to see my parents and family.

NFL Europe Week 7 Recap

For the second time this season, Packers wide receiver Shockmain Davis returned a kickoff for a touchdown -- this time for 87 yards -- but it wasn't enough as the Rhein Fire (3-4) fell to the Berlin Thunder, 33-20, Sunday.

Quarterback Rohan Davey (New England), the league's leading passer, continued his dominance in NFL-E, completing 16-of-27 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Davey, who did not throw an interception, logged a 113.5 passer rating before giving way to David Rivers at halftime.

Rhein quarterback Chad Hutchinson (Dallas) completed 26-of-42 passes for 305 yards and one touchdown in the losing effort.

With a record of 6-1, Berlin became the first team in NFL-E league history to clinch a World Bowl berth as early as Week 7. The Thunder's only loss of the season thus far came in Week 6 vs. the Cologne Centurions, 28-27.

Random Questions With James Lee

A fifth-round selection out of Oregon State in the 2003 NFL Draft, defensive tackle James Lee has been with the Packers for over a year now. But in many ways he's still waiting to start his NFL career.

Sidelined all of last season after a pinched nerve landed him on injured reserve during training camp, since recovering from his injury Lee has been working extensively with strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin to prepare for 2004.

Lee is so excited for the coming season that he says he's actually looking forward to training camp, a period of the year that most players dread.

Recently, Packers.com caught up with Lee to learn a little bit more about the 6-foot-5, 325-pound giant through a series of Random Questions.

Packers.com: What's your strongest asset as a football player?
James Lee: "My size. Size and speed, I guess. Right now, it's just size as I'm working to get my quickness back."

NFL Europe Week 7 Preview

Two of the league's top passing offenses will go head-to-head for the first time this weekend as NFL Europe enters Week 7.

The Amsterdam Admirals (2-4), who lead NFL-E with 1,414 passing yards, will host the Cologne Centurions (2-4), the league's second-ranked passing offense with 1,392 yards.

Despite the offensive output, both teams have struggled to hold on to the ball this season. Through six games, Amsterdam ranks fourth in the league with a minus-4 turnover ratio (12 giveaways to eight takeaways), while Cologne ranks fifth with a minus-5 ratio (13 giveaways to eight takeaways).

With just one more victory this season, Cologne can tie the record for most wins in a season by an expansion team. In 1999, Berlin had three wins, while the Ohio Glory won two games during their 1992 inaugural season.
Steve Josue: NFL Europe Diary, Part IV

A seventh-round draft pick in 2003, Steve Josue spent all of last season on the Green Bay Packers' practice squad.

This spring, the former Carson-Newman standout is overseas with the Amsterdam Admirals getting game experience in NFL Europe.

Through six games this season, playing weak-side linebacker, Josue has eight tackles (six solo), including a sack, plus four special teams tackles.

The Admirals meanwhile, have dropped to 2-4, but Josue is optimistic his team can turn it around, as he told Packers.com in the continuation of the NFL Europe Diary.

Josue: I wish I could say that the last two weeks have been pretty good, but they haven't. After getting back to 2-2, we lost the last two games: 33-29 to Berlin and 20-13 to Rhein.

We played some pretty good football in those games, but we were pretty bad at times, too. Unfortunately we just made a lot of the same mistakes we've made all season. We left points on the field both..

Random Questions With Curtis Fuller

Claimed on waivers by Green Bay Sept. 1 -- one day after being released by Seattle -- Curtis Fuller was called upon for extensive duty at defensive back late last season after Antuan Edwards went out with a hamstring injury.

A third-year veteran from Texas Christian University, Fuller played in nine games as a reserve, recording five tackles and one pass defensed, along with a special teams stop.

Admittedly, Fuller's best moment as a pro was his first time playing in the postseason, when the Packers topped his former team in overtime, 33-27, in the 2003 NFC Wildcard playoffs.

Recently, Fuller sat down with Packers.com to discuss this and a few other topics in our latest round of Random Questions.

Packers.com: What's the best and worst thing about playing in the NFL?
Curtis Fuller: "The best thing is that you get six months off out of the year and you can live pretty much anywhere you want to live.

NFL Europe: Week 6 Recap

One second away from continuing their unbeaten streak, the Berlin Thunder (5-1) surrendered a last second touchdown to the Cologne Centurions, Saturday, losing their first game of the season 28-27.

Leading his team to just their second win in franchise history, Ryan Van Dyke (NYG) completed 32-of-41 passes for 377 yards and four touchdowns for the Centurions, but it was his two interceptions late in the game that contributed to a surprising turnaround that put Berlin ahead 27-21 in the fourth quarter.

With one minute remaining, Van Dyke regained his composure enough to drive the Centurions to the 1-yard line, where he found Carl Morris (Miami) in the end zone for the game-winning score.

Packers defensive end Cullen Jenkins had one tackle while Eric Powell had one tackle and one pass defensed for Cologne. Cornerback Erwin Swiney also had one pass defensed for the Centurions.

The Frankfurt Galaxy (5-1) joined Berlin at the top of the standings with ..

Barry Keeps Busy Through Internship Program

When the season ends for an NFL player, the time off is often welcomed. But after the bones heal and energy is regained, many players find themselves looking for ways to occupy their hours.

Packers offensive tackle Kevin Barry found himself in that exact situation.

When Barry entered his first professional offseason after concluding his rookie campaign with the Packers, he found himself with some free time he wanted to fill. He spoke with Edgar Bennett, the Packers' director of player development and former Green Bay running back, about potential opportunities to work with kids.

"(Bennett) asked about things I had been involved with before," said Barry. "I told him I did track in high school. He told me there was a high school where some of our players helped with lifting and conditioning. I went over there and started helping out."

Barry, coming into his third professional season with the Packers, just finished his second assisting prep athletes a..

NFL Europe Week 6 Preview

Fans of NFL Europe will have their choice of games to watch, as all three Week 6 contests will be broadcast in the U.S. this weekend.

The Berlin Thunder (5-0), NFL-E's only undefeated team, will travel to Cologne to face the Centurions (1-4) Saturday. Berlin escaped the Week 2 meeting between the two teams in which quarterback Rohan Davey threw for four touchdowns, leading the Thunder to a 35-31 win.

Berlin enters the contest as the league's top scoring team with 130 points through five games. Meanwhile, three Packers (defensive ends Cullen Jenkins and Eric Powell and cornerback Erwin Swiney) hope to give Cologne its second win in franchise history.

The game will be broadcast live at noon on NFL Network, with a tape delay airing at 7 p.m. (CT) Saturday night.

Coming off their first victory of the season last week against the Rhein Fire, the Scottish Claymores (1-4) look to make it two in a row Sunday when they face the defending World Bowl Champi..

Butler: Rookie Corners Have Great Potential

The first time I met Ahmad Carroll and Joey Thomas was in February at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

I was there to take a look at all the defensive backs, and I was in the room when Carroll and Thomas had their personal interviews with the Packers.

Thomas certainly made a memorable first impression. Most of the guys at the Combine go to all their interviews in their workout shorts and a Combine T-Shirt. Thomas wore dress slacks and a tie.

You could tell right away that he was confident in his ability. He talked about how he was eager to become a professional football player and how he thought he could come in and compete with the league's top receivers right out of the box.

As a former defensive back, I love to see that kind of mentality in a kid. On the other hand, you have to be careful, because when a team drafts you they're going to want you to live up to your words.

But Thomas was a good interview -- a smart, bright ki..

Remmel: The Day Don Hutson Almost Got Away

It is a story that begins the last week of December 1934, a time when the Packers were launching their pursuit of a legendary end, whose subsequent presence on the National Football League stage was to not only change the course of Packers and NFL history but also the way the game is played.

Since it was the year before the league implemented the draft, Don Hutson -- and every other player coming out of the college ranks -- was fair game. From the clubs' perspective, it was literally a case of "every man for himself."

Accordingly, as the final days of '34 were unfolding, Hutson and his University of Alabama football team were in California preparing for a Rose Bowl matchup against Stanford on New Year's Day. During this process, the Crimson Tide, and Donald Montgomery Hutson in particular, received a practice field visit from Curly Lambeau, then vice president, general manager an..

NFL Europe: Week 5 Recap

In the 400th game in league history, the Berlin Thunder became the first team since the 1998 Rhein Fire to begin a season with five straight wins, topping the Admirals 33-29, Sunday.

Packers tight end Tony Donald had two catches for 40 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown catch from Clint Stoerner (Miami) to bring Amsterdam to within four points with 54 seconds remaining in the game.

But the high-powered offense of Berlin would prove to be too much, as quarterback Rohan Davey (New England) completed 10-of-17 passes for 149 yards and four touchdowns, in addition to 18 yards on six carries and a 1-yard touchdown run.

For the Admirals, Packers linebacker Steve Josue had two assisted tackles and two special teams tackles, while cornerback Derek Combs added one tackle.

One week after dropping their first contest of the season, the Frankfurt Galaxy (4-1) avoided their second consecutive overtime game as running back Skip Hicks (Cincinnati) scored on a..

Sander Ready For Pressure

Until he wins the job -- and then, even throughout his rookie season -- B.J. Sander knows his every move will be scrutinized.

That's what happens when you're a punter and an NFL team trades up into the third round of the draft to get you.

But if all the media and fan attention should put added weight on Sander's shoulders, he insists he doesn't feel it.

"It's just one of the things you deal with," Sander said this week, surrounded by no fewer than six television cameras and more than a dozen reporters. "Most of the pressure I feel is pressure I put on myself, because I have very high expectations."

Clearly, so do the Packers, who traded a fourth- and a fifth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins to move up into the third round of last weekend's draft to take Sander.

Although Iowa kicker Nate Kaeding had already gone to the San Diego Chargers earlier in the round, Sander was the first punter selected. Eventually, Pittsburgh's Andy Lee (6th rou..

Notebook - Packers Close Mini-Camp

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up their first mini-camp of 2004 Sunday, and the best development of all may have been the minimal expansion of the team's injury list.

Other than defensive lineman Earl Cochran (quadriceps) and wide receiver Devin Lewis (knee), who sat out the final two days of practice with minor injuries, no players were hurt during the five-day camp.

Practices were conducted with players in jerseys and shorts instead of the pads of training camp, so in many ways it's too soon to make any judgments about the state of the team. But GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said he saw things he liked throughout the workouts.

"We're not ready to play the Carolina Panthers today, but we've made a lot of progress," Sherman said. "I thought our veterans came back with a great attitude. Everybody that was here and participated in our mini-camp as a veteran really was all business. They were excited about being here, back with their teammates and they worked ..

Mini-Camp Report - May 2

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up the annual post-draft mini-camp inside the Don Hutson Center, Sunday.

With veterans having been released after yesterday's morning practice, Sunday was set aside for rookies and a few selected veterans.

In addition to working on position drills, the Packers turned their attention to special teams, focusing on downing punts inside the 10-yard line, with B.J. Sander and Travis Dorsch sharing the reps.

Special teams coordinator John Bonamego credited the performances of both punters during camp, but said Sander had an especially good outing Sunday working with the short field.

"He had six punts and they were all (downed) inside the 10(-yard line)," Bonamego said. "It was a good day and a good camp and we'll just keep working on it. It's a good situation for the Packers right now."

In team drills, quarterback Scott McBrien split defenders Ahmad Carroll and Eric Crouch to connect with wide receiver Frank Ri..

Nall Displeased By Performance

After the Green Bay Packers' morning mini-camp practice Saturday, Craig Nall sat in his locker with an unmistakable look of disappointment on his face.

Having entered the week looking to demonstrate himself as a capable No. 2 quarterback, Nall instead has picked the wrong time to struggle with his mechanics.

"My release point is a little bit off," Nall said. "Mentally, I think I'm making the right reads and going to the right spot with the ball. It's just frustrating whenever I'm trying to make the perfect throw and the ball just sails on me a bit. I've just got to work those things out."

By Nall's own admission he's been less than his best this week, assigning himself a 'C' grade through four days of practice. "C-plus at best," he said.

Nall said a number of factors could play into his struggles with his throwing mechanics, from out-of-rhythm footwork to a new style of football that the Packers have been testing in practices.

But more..

Carroll's Height Doesn't Worry Coaches

Over time, the Green Bay Packers hope that rookie cornerback Ahmad Carroll will challenge the ceiling of his potential.

How close he comes to challenging the ceiling of the Don Huston Center is irrelevant.

That's why GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman isn't concerned about the fact that at 5-foot-10 Carroll -- the 25th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft -- is the shortest cornerback on the Packers' roster.

"One of the best defenses in football has been the Miami Dolphins," Sherman noted, "and they play two corners about the same size as him."

In fact, they do. Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain, who have been to six Pro Bowls between them in their NFL careers, are both 5-foot-11.

Furthermore, half of 2003's six Pro Bowl corners were 5-foot-11 or shorter: Surtain, New England's Ty Law (5-11) and Detroit's Dre Bly (5-9).

Beyond that, four of 2003's top five pass defenses had at least one sub-6-foot starting corner: Terrence Newman (5-11) of D..

Mini-Camp Report - May 1

Over 150 fans got their first glimpse of the Packers' draft class of 2004 Saturday as the team's rookies and selected veterans took the afternoon practice outdoors to Clarke Hinkle Field.

Quarterback Craig Nall connected with wide receiver Carl Ford on two occasions, first along the right sideline over the outstretched hands of cornerback Jason Horton. Later, Nall split defenders Chris Watson and Bhawoh Jue to connect with Ford for a gain of nearly 40 yards.

In addition to team drills, the Packers took advantage of the sunny afternoon weather to work on special teams drills, including 2-on-1 punt coverage drills, with Ford, Antonio Chatman and Eric Crouch fielding the kicks.

In the morning session inside the Don Hutson Center, quarterback Brett Favre took the entire practice off, leaving Nall, Doug Pederson and Scott McBrien to split the snaps.

After logging work at position drills and special teams, the Packers moved to 7-on-7 drills, where safet..
