Fullbacks Pack A 1-2 Punch

The Green Bay Packers have developed one of the finest running games in the NFL over the past few seasons, posting some of the best numbers in the team's 80-plus year history.

Running back Ahman Green and the men in the trenches, the offensive line, no doubt deserve a lot of credit for rising to make the running attack the focal point of the Packers' high-powered offense.

They have not gone without recognition, and rightfully so, with Green earning a Pro Bowl selection in each of the past three seasons. He has also been joined in Honolulu by linemen Mike Flanagan and Marco Rivera.

There are two more men who are key cogs in the running attack who do not frequently get the recognition. These are two of Green's top blockers, fullbacks William Henderson and Nick Luchey.

The Packers have luxury of rotating a pair of fullbacks, each of whom could start for most teams in the league.

Henderson, who is in his 10th year in Green Bay and is one o..

Packers Focus On Turnover Battle

Looking at the stat sheet heading into Sunday's game pitting the Packers against the Giants, the two teams appear to be about equal.

Comparing their points scored and yardage gained, they are in a virtual dead heat. For all the talk of how much the Packers defense has given up, they've allowed opponents one fewer yard than the Giants have.

So why is it that with the teams so close statistically, the Giants come to town with a record of 2-1 and winners of two in a row, while the Packers stand at 1-2 and are looking to snap a two game losing skid?

One key stat jumps off the page when comparing the two clubs that seems to tell the tale, and will no doubt be a determining factor in the outcome of Sunday's contest, and that is turnovers.

Through three games, the Packers stand at -1 in the turnover ratio, having caused six turnovers while turning the ball over seven times. The Giants, on the other hand, lead the league in the takeaway-giveaway category..

Sargento Offers Football-Themed Cheese Carving Contest

You've got to see it to believe it!

Join Sargento as it kicks off its second year as the Official Cheese of Lambeau Field with a Football-Themed Cheese Carving Contest -- 3 to 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 11, outside the Lambeau Field Atrium prior to kick-off of the Packers/Titans Game.

What better way to combine the Sargento passion for cheese and the support of the Wisconsin community, love of the (football) game and the second-annual Sargento "Official Cheese of Lambeau Field" designation than with a truly Wisconsin-style, football-themed cheese carving event!

Sargento has selected six University of Wisconsin at Green Bay art students to carve football-related sculptures out of 40-pound blocks of Sargento Cheddar Cheese. The carvings will be judged by members of the Packers Women's Association, per judging criteria provided onsite by professional cheese sculpture arti..

Defense Must Get After Warner

When the New York Giants come to Wisconsin Sunday to meet the Packers, they will be led by a familiar face - familiar at least to Brett Favre, and anyone else that was in camp with the Pack back in 1994.

Quarterback Kurt Warner, whose tenure as a Packer pre-dates his now-famous story of traveling from the Arena Football League, to NFL Europe, to superstardom with the St. Louis Rams, will be under center for the Giants.

The two-time league MVP, who also picked up a Super Bowl ring with the Rams, first broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent when he signed with the Packers out of the University of Northern Iowa in 1994.

Coming off of two difficult seasons in St. Louis, the signal-caller looks to have regained some of his old form as he's directed the Giants to a 2-1 record thus far in the young season.

Linebacker Nick Barnett is not buying into the reports that Warner isn't the same player he used once was, and is prepared to face the quarterba..

Tauscher Ready For Strahan Assignment

If the Packers offense is to keep up its high-scoring performance from last week's game at Indianapolis when the New York Giants visit Lambeau Field this weekend, one key will definitely be continuing to protect Brett Favre when he drops back to pass.

Through three games, the Packers have allowed just three sacks, which ties Dallas for fewest in the NFC. Green Bay's stalwart offensive line may have a task on their hands, however, as the Giants have already dropped opposing quarterbacks 10 times, fourth-best in the NFL.

When you think of the Giants pass rush, your thoughts immediately go toward defensive end Michael Strahan, who set the NFL all-time single-season record with 22.5 sacks in 2001.

The 12-year veteran and six-time Pro Bowler, who leads all active players with 117 career sacks, is well on his way to another fine season, having picked up three sacks, including two last week against Cleveland.

Strahan predominately lines up on the left ..

Motivating The Young

Packers offensive lineman Grey Ruegamer is entering a sixth year in the NFL, an experienced vet. He is equally experienced in giving to the community as he is protecting the quarterback.

Ruegamer first began his community work while in college at Arizona State. He made visits to schools to read to children and was involved in the D.A.R.E. program. Following playing in the 1997 Rose Bowl, he made a visit to a children's hospital with some of his teammates. He was struck by the courage he saw in the children he saw there.

"It was sad seeing the kids, but those kids are tough," Ruegamer said. "They're fighting everyday. We'd go in there and talk with them. It was good to see them smile after all that they've been through. It really makes you feel good."

He was drafted by Miami in 1999, and ended up with New England the following year. Ruegamer's charitable ways did not end with his college career. His wife, Laurie, arranged for him and many of his Patriots..

Packers-Giants Principals In 'Tilted' Rivalry

PACKERS AND GIANTS, PRINCIPALS IN A 'TITLED' RIVALRY, HAVE PLAYED FOR NFL HONORS 5 TIMES; 'DAVID' OWNS EDGE ON 'GOLIATH'

Taciturn Calvin Coolidge was occupying the White House, Babe Ruth was in his slugging prime and Gene Tunney was heavyweight boxing champion of the world when the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants began having at it on the football field.

That was in 1928, a time when 30-year-old Curly Lambeau was in his 10th season presiding over the Packers' artistic fortunes - and the burgeoning Green and Gold were en route to becoming a power in the National Football League, a dream they were to realize a year later when they won the first of three consecutive championships.

The Packers and Giants formally launched their rivalry in the third week of the '28 season (Oct. 7), the New Yorkers paying their first-ever visit to Green Bay and subsequently departing the original City Stadium - then only three years old - with a 6-0 victory.

Letters To LeRoy Butler

Do you think that if Javon Walker continues to put up numbers like he did against the Colts, he could go to the Pro Bowl? - Mike (Milwaukee, WI)

Not only could he be headed for Honolulu in February, he could be one of the best receivers in this league if he continues to perform at that level. That could be one of the best draft picks the Packers have made in a long time.

We've seen what he's capable of doing. He's big, strong and fast - just like the #84 in Minnesota. I think the potential is unlimited to what Javon can do. Brett's starting to feed him the ball, and he's capable of causing a lot of match-up problems with teams in this league.

Sometimes it's difficult to catch a lot of balls in the west coast offense, but if he keeps getting open, Brett's going to keep getting him the ball.

Does the number one defense go against the number one offense during practice? If so, how can the number one defense get any confidence if they ..

Butler: Offense Must Stay Hot

Sunday's game with the Colts was just like I expected - a high-scoring shootout. I was talking to Brett Favre earlier in the week, and he assured me that if the game turned into a shootout, he was going to be ready. Boy, was he ever.

During the practice week, Tony Dungy went into their meetings and told Peyton Manning they might throw the ball 50 times. That isn't the normal approach. Normally, teams like to set up the pass by establishing the run, but the Colts came out firing right away.

The Packers players knew the magnitude of the game. They knew that Peyton Manning was a very good quarterback who was capable of coming out and putting up big numbers. The most disappointing thing about it was that the Colts scored too easily - too many big plays.

You can't allow that many transition plays - plays over 20 yards - and expect to win in the National Football League. Those are the plays that will hurt you. Going on the road, you focus on limiting tran..

The Road Less Traveled Led Lenon To Packers

Many athletes travel different roads on their way to making an NFL roster. One player may have parlayed a remarkable college career into a high draft status. Another one may have worked hard just for a tryout.

If there is a perfect way into the league, it hasn't been found.

No one understands that better than Paris Lenon. And if you'd review the road he took in making it in this league, chances are you would find that it's been unlike any of his Green Bay Packer teammates or the rest of the NFL, for that matter.

It's not as if the 6-foot-2, 242-pound linebacker didn't start out on the right track. Lenon had a very productive college career at the University of Richmond where he finished with 320 career tackles, including 12 sacks and 21 stops for loss. He also recorded a career-high 104 tackles as a sophomore.

However, Lenon's pro career didn't exactly take off when he graduated in 2000. In fact, Lenon's pro career didn't take off at all..

Packers Notebook - 1-2 Record No Reason To Panic

Although no one in the Packers locker room is pleased with two losses in their first three games of the season, there isn't anyone hurrying to press the panic button either.

Most of the men on the roster now were around last season, when after a 1-2 start, the Packers made a charge to win the NFC North Division for the second straight year.

Safety Darren Sharper spoke Monday about the mood in the land of Green and Gold.

"For one thing, we're not panicking," Sharper said. "We saw how the season started off last year and how we put ourselves in the position to be in the running at the end of the year. We're not panicking at all."

Center Mike Flanagan echoed that sentiment just a few lockers down.

"It doesn't matter how you start - it's how you finish," said Flanagan. "Talk to us in December. We're going to go into this week planning on winning and go from there."

Favre's Injuries No Threat To Streak

He may have been on the sidelines for the final possession of Sunday's game at Indianapolis, but fear not, Packer fans, Brett Favre will be in the lineup this week when the New York Giants come to town.

Favre's 192-game consecutive start streak is not in jeopardy, even after taking a knee from defensive end Dwight Freeney to the back of his leg in the fourth quarter of the Colts game.

What was at first considered to possibly be a hamstring injury was later diagnosed as a bruise, which limited his mobility due to a "charley horse" effect on his leg.

The quarterback finished the possession while hobbling before giving way to back-up Doug Pederson with the Packers trailing by 14 late in the game.

"It doesn't feel good right now, but I think it will be fine," Favre said after the game. "More of a charley horse or something like that."

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman confirmed Favre's assessment in his Monday press conference.

McDonald's Competition Comes To Team Dining

For anyone watching TV in Wisconsin over the past month, it would have been difficult not see and get a good laugh at the McDonald's commercial featuring Donald Driver and Marco Rivera.

During the month of September, McDonald's has run a promotion featuring a competition between the Marco Rivera Cheddar Melt and the Donald Driver Chicken Selects meals. Sweepstakes ran throughout September both in McDonald's restaurants and on-line, giving Packer fans chances to a variety of prizes, including tickets to a home game, a trip to see the Packers on the road, and autographed Packers gear.

As the contest wound to a close, the players' Packer teammates were given a chance to decide for themselves which meal they preferred.

Before heading to Indianapolis Saturday, McDonald's supplied 110 Rivera Cheddar Melt meals and 110 Driver Chicken Selects meals for the team's lunch in their Lambeau Field team dining area.

Packers Women's Association Food Drive Slated For Oct. 24

Annually, the Packers Women's Association conducts a food drive at one home Packers game for the less fortunate in the Green Bay area.

This year, the Packers-Cowboys game, October 24, has been selected as the date in which the PWA will again be collecting food outside Lambeau Field to be distributed to Paul's Pantry.

Last year, in conjunction with the Lambeau Field game day collection, PWA held an in-school food drive in which approximately 30 area schools participated.

Between the two food drives (and a $4,000 donation from Younkers' grand opening in Green Bay), a record 76,400 food items and $16,541 was collected and distributed to Paul's Pantry to help feed the hungry in our community.

Walker Emerging As Go-To Receiver

Throughout this summer's training camp, one of the constant themes among the media covering the Packers was which two of the team's three receivers would be named as starters.

All three of the top pass-catchers, Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson and Javon Walker, repeatedly said that it didn't matter whose names were announced when the starting lineup was introduced prior to each game's kickoff.

After three games, though, it appears that Walker has not only locked down a spot in the lineup, but is becoming Brett Favre's go-to guy.

The numbers he has posted over the past few weeks could have some Packer observers conjuring up memories of Favre's first go-to receiver - and another #84 - Sterling Sharpe.

The third-year player out of Florida State University posted career numbers in Sunday's game at Indianapolis, catching 11 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns, scoring on plays of 36, 79, and 12 yards. His 79-yard reception in the first quarter..

Packers Scoring Streak Now #2 In NFL

Following Sunday's game at Indianapolis, the Green Bay Packers have scored in 204 consecutive games. The last time the team was shut out was all the way back on October 27, 1991, 27-0 at Tampa Bay.

The 204-game scoring streak now stands as the second-longest current streak in the NFL, after the San Francisco 49ers had their league-record 420-game run stopped Sunday at Seattle.

Only the Minnesota Vikings (207 games) have a longer current streak than the Packers.

AP Story: Colts Derail Packers 45-31

Peyton Manning and Brett Favre threw nine touchdown passes between them and weren't even the heroes.

That role went to Jason David, a rookie defensive back who stole the ball from one of Favre's receivers to clinch a 45-31 win for Manning and the Indianapolis Colts over Favre and the Green Bay Packers.

The superstar quarterbacks certainly did their jobs.

Manning threw for 393 yards and five first-half touchdowns. Favre threw for 360 yards and four TDs and the Packers rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to within a touchdown.

But the play of the game was made by David and Nick Harper. David, burned all game by Favre, stripped Javon Walker after he caught Favre's pass just across midfield and Harper returned it to the Green Bay 36.

That set up Edgerrin James' 1-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left.

"You like to see that from a young kid," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "He had had a tough day. He got beaten on one coverage an..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Colts

This Sunday's game with the Packers going to Indianapolis should be a great one. It's going to be a lot like the old movie, "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" - just two gun-slingers with Brett Favre going up against Peyton Manning. It's going to be one of the classic quarterback match-ups.

The difference in the two offenses is that Indianapolis' offense relies on Manning to be the focal point. With Edgerrin James possibly not being in there this week, they may throw the ball a lot more than normal. Brett Favre can rely upon Ahman Green and the offensive line to help him do the things he would like to do.

The Indianapolis offense is a real unique offense in the things they want to do. It is all set up by play-action. Regardless of who the back is, they will still run a play-action offense.

On the outside, Marvin Harrison has got to be one of the best receivers of the modern-day era. I know you fans remember back to when the Colts were 0-10, the last tim..

Carroll, McKenzie To Miss Game Versus Colts

The Green Bay Packers Saturday downgraded cornerbacks Ahmad Carroll and Mike McKenzie's injury status, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Carroll (groin), who was previously listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Colts, is listed as out. McKenzie (hamstring), was downgraded from probable to out.

According to Sherman, both injuries occurred around the same time near the end of Thursday's afternoon practice session. Both injuries occurred during non-contact defensive drills.

Both Carroll and McKenzie will remain in Green Bay and will not travel with the team.

Packers Notebook - Positive News On The Injury Front

Defensive tackle Kenny Peterson, who has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the preseason finale at Tennessee September 3, returned to practice this week.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Peterson progressed well and is a good possibility to bolster the depleted ranks on the interior of the defensive line.

"Kenny had a good week of practice," Sherman said Friday. "He looked like he looked before he got hurt. I was a little concerned that he wouldn't be able to pick up from the conditioning standpoint and also from a quickness standpoint. He was a little rusty on Wednesday, but on Thursday he looked really good. Today, I thought he looked even better, so I'm excited to get him back."

Peterson is anxious to get back on the field and do what he can, especially in the absence of Grady Jackson and James Lee.

"I'm a competitor," said the second-year man from Ohio State. "I don't like to be a spectator, so I'm anxious to get back ..

Injury Bug Bites Secondary

Leading up to Sunday's game at Indianapolis, the injury bug paid a visit to Green Bay, landing four players on Friday's injury report, including all three players listed at left cornerback on the depth chart.

Ahmad Carroll, Michael Hawthorne and Mike McKenzie all were new additions to the list when it was filed Friday, with Hawthorne (ankle) and McKenzie (hamstring) given the designation of probable (75% chance of playing) and Carroll listed as questionable (50%) after suffering a pulled groin muscle.

Also added to the report was wide receiver Robert Ferguson, who was listed as probable with a hamstring ailment.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman addressed the injury issue in a press conference following Friday's mid-day practice. He said that the rash of injuries all occurred around the same time, toward the end of Thursday's afternoon session.

Defense Preparing For Sunday Chess Match

The Packers defense is in for a stern test Sunday as they travel to Indianapolis to face Peyton Manning and the Colts. The match-up will be the first in a series of two games in three weeks where the quarterback on the other side of the ball is the reigning league co-Most Valuable Player.

Manning shared MVP honors with Tennessee's Steve McNair in 2003 and the Titans will be paying a visit to Lambeau Field in week five.

With all eyes fixed on the game at hand, though, Green Bay free safety Darren Sharper didn't have to look far from his locker to find a metaphor for Sunday's battle with Manning and his arsenal of offensive weapons.

Located about 10 feet from Sharper's stall in the Packers' locker room is a table on top of which two chess boards are available for players to use during free time.

The defender may have seen them as he responded to a question about the prospect of going up against Manning and his notorious practice of calling audible..

After Long Ride, Horton Meets Destination

Training camp comes and goes every season and no matter how talented some players are, a team just doesn't have enough room on its squad to keep them all. It's the business of the NFL, and it's also what makes professional football so competitive. With roster spots so difficult to come by, only the best players survive.

Rookie cornerback Jason Horton never had any doubts that he was a very good player, but he knew how the NFL worked. He knew that when the numbers game takes over, it usually doesn't favor undrafted rookie free agents.

For whatever reason though, Horton still battled. He came to practice everyday with a positive attitude and confident he would at least make the Packers' decision a difficult one if they felt they had to let him go.

It didn't take long for coaches to see exactly why they signed Horton in the first place. His speed jumped out right away and his size, at nearly 6-1 and 193 pounds, is prototypical for his cornerback positio..

Favre vs. Manning In Classic QB Matchup

Favre vs. Manning. Will the dome be rocking!

Two teams with Super Bowl aspirations, the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts, meet at the RCA Dome this Sunday. Each club is led by a marquee quarterback expected to cap his career in Canton, Ohio at the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- Brett Favre of the Packers and Peyton Manning of the Colts.

Manning threw for two touchdowns in an impressive 31-17 win at Tennessee last week, while Favre and Green Bay aim to rebound after a 21-10 home loss to Chicago.

Favre and Manning not only have a reputation for excellence, but also for consistency. Favre has started 191 consecutive games, the most in NFL history by a quarterback. Manning, with 98 consecutive starts, is fourth in NFL annals and rapidly approaching his milestone 100th start in a row.

The five quarterbacks with the most career consecutive starts:
(Quarterback, Team, Starts, Years)
Brett Favre, Green Bay, 191, 1992-present

Favre And Manning In Another Dream Matchup

Before Monday night's kickoff in Philadelphia, Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens compared his matchup with Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss to one between Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

"You can put it up there like the NBA, when they had Michael vs. Magic," Owens declared.

Now, on the very next weekend, the NFL gets another of those dream matchups that is so authentic, Dan Rather couldn't make it up.

Inside Indianapolis' RCA Dome and on televisions across the country, Canton-bound Packers quarterback Brett Favre will square off against Canton-bound Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

On the same stage, on the same day.

Outside of Michael Vick vs. Tom Brady, there is no arms race that could be any more appealing than Favre and Manning. Think of it as the purest form of fantasy football.

Packers Notebook - McKenzie May Start Sunday

Just one week removed from making his return to the Green Bay Packers locker room, cornerback Mike McKenzie may be making the move back into the starting line-up for this Sunday' match-up with the Indianapolis Colts and their high-powered offense.

Michael Hawthorne has been in the starting 11 for GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman's defense throughout the preseason and the first two games of the regular season, and has played well. The fifth-year player from Purdue had seven tackles and forced two fumbles against Chicago Sunday, making Sherman's decision even more difficult.

Sherman said Wednesday that the starter will be determined throughout the week of preparation for the Colts game. McKenzie will definitely see more time than he did in his debut Sunday, when he was only on the field for about 10 snaps in passing situations.

"There's a chance Mike could start this week, a good chance," said Sherman. "We're going to increase the volume of reps that he has had ..

Pack Must Again Fill Line Gap

When the Green Bay Packers head to Indianapolis to face the Colts in their third game of the 2004 season this weekend, they will be featuring their third starting nose tackle of the young campaign.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday that second-year man James Lee, who was inserted into the heart of the defensive line last week, had suffered a lateral meniscus tear and would be lost to the team for four-to-six weeks.

Lee underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee early Wednesday morning after suffering the injury in the first quarter of the game against Chicago Sunday. The Oregon State product remained in the game despite the injury and finished the contest with three tackles.

The injury marked the second straight game to see the Packers' starting nose guard injured in the first quarter. Grady Jackson, the top man on the depth chart, was sidelined by a dislocated kneecap early in the action of the September 13 season opener at Carolina...

Colts-Packers Playoff Remains Etched In Lore

Chandler field goal controversial to this day

In terms of Packers history, the "Ice Bowl" of frigid legend is far better "known"...

So is Super Bowl I, an unqualified success.

And, for that matter, Super Bowl II, another resounding success.

But the Packers' 1965 Western Conference playoff victory over the Colts, then based in Baltimore, also has had a profound impact upon the team's distinguished annals.

Without it, in fact, there would have been no Super Bowls I and II in the Packer "experience."

It was only because the Green and Gold were able to ultimately prevail on that now distant occasion - 13-10 in a sudden death overtime struggle - that they became positioned to win three consecutive National Football League championships (1965-66-67), thus becoming the only team to pull off such a trifecta since the league adopted its playoff system in 1933.

It is an exclusivity they continue to own to this day.

Rogers Boosts Linebacker Corps And Special Teams Units

It wasn't supposed to be this way for Nick Rogers. He played in all 32 games for the Vikings the last two seasons and started 16, including 11 in 2002. Proving his versatility, Rogers also led the team with 24 tackles on special teams.

Certainly, Rogers expected once again to have a role with the team that drafted him out of Georgia Tech in 2002. After playing exclusively at linebacker in his brief NFL career, the Vikings wanted him to switch to defensive end this summer. Although he played two seasons in college at defensive end, Rogers had to once again relearn the position and he thought the best was yet to come.

While that may be true, it will be in a different uniform and at a different position. The Vikings released the 6-2, 252 pound Rogers when they trimmed their roster on cut-down day nearly two weeks ago. Soon after, the Packers picked him up on waivers to bolster their linebacker corps.

Rogers admits the whole process took him by surprise...

Letters To LeRoy Butler

LeRoy - The Bears did to us what we did to the Panthers, and ran up the middle, exposing the void left by Grady Jackson's injury. Can the rest of the defense shift responsibilities to help James Lee, (Jackson's replacement) or is it up to Lee to solely step up and fill the void? - Frankie (Milwaukee, WI)

I think it's solely up to Lee. This is his opportunity to play. He's a bigger nose guard, a bigger tackle. I think he will do well. I like him. Whenever you get a guy that big, you can work with him, and I think he'll do well.

He's just going to try to improve every week. Hopefully he can get noticed by making some plays. He'll make strides because he has a very good coach in Jethro Franklin, who will make sure he's ready every week.

Leroy, The Bears started the game with a lot of offensive movement prior to the snap. How does this affect a blitzing defense? - Brian (Madison, WI)

Butler: Packers Must Put Sunday Behind Them

Coming into the game, the only way I thought the Bears had a shot to win was to win the turnover battle. Also, I thought if the Packers made mistakes in the red zone, the Bears would have a shot to steal a victory.

I didn't think Rex Grossman was the kind of quarterback who could put up the kind of numbers to beat the Packers, and I also didn't think Thomas Jones was the kind of running back that could beat us.

I was basing all of this off of what the Packers did at Carolina last Monday night, and what the Bears had shown against the Detroit Lions in week one.

The Chicago Bears came in right away and had a great game plan. Essentially, their game plan was to run the ball, throw short, controlled passes. At the beginning of the game, the Bears used a lot of different formations. They shifted both tight ends a lot, had a lot of empty backfield or one-back sets, all of which the Packers are accustomed to seeing.

The difference was the Bears' block..

Flanagan Will Continue To Tough It Out

Pro Bowl center Mike Flanagan, like the rest of his Packers teammates and Packer fans everywhere, hurt after the loss to Chicago on Sunday.

Flanagan, unlike most of the previously mentioned group though, also hurt after the win in the opening weekend at Carolina.

The ninth-year pro is playing through pain every time he steps on the field, but he's doing his best not to let it affect him. Suffering from patella tendinitis in his left knee, Flanagan had all but the final week of his training camp wiped out as he rehabbed the injury.

After getting a handful of snaps in the final preseason game, Flanagan was expected to be rusty heading into the regular season. Judging from his play, along with that of the rest of the offensive line, the quality of the 30-year-old's performance hasn't been hurt.

Through two weeks of the season, Flanagan and his mates have helped lead the way for Ahman Green's NFC-best 247 rushing yards. They've also allowed just two..

Former Players Share Memories At Alumni Weekend

The Packers have one of the richest-if not the richest-traditions in NFL history. While many teams only concern themselves with their current players, the Packers organization remembers its past and embraces it.

That is no more evident than in an event that has now taken place for 69 consecutive years: Green Bay Packers Alumni Weekend. Many players from several eras were on hand last weekend such as John Brockington and Willie Buchanon of the 1970's, Gerry Ellis and Don Majkowski of the 1980's and Chris Jacke and Don Davey of the 1990's.

Of course, the list extended beyond that as well. Bart Starr, who had many great years in a Packers uniform, was also in attendance as he was honored earlier in the day with a statue at the Bart Starr Plaza in front of the Resch Center.

The activities got started Saturday night when the alumni took a tour through the locker room and into Lambeau Field. The former greats also got an up close look at numerous o..

Perhaps Bart Starr's most famous moment as a player came during the 1967 NFL Championship game, better known as the "Ice Bowl." Starr scored on a one-yard sneak with 13 seconds remaining to give the Packers a 21-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The game remains arguably one of the greatest in NFL history.

Although Starr certainly won't be forgotten for his heroics in that game or for his MVP awards in Super Bowls I and II, those accomplishments are just a small piece of his legacy. Throughout his career as a player (1956-1971) and as the Packers head coach (1975-1983), there was more to Starr than just his football achievements.

Starr's generosity and kindness were recognized Saturday afternoon with the unveiling of a 7 1/2 foot statue outside of the Resch Center at the newly named Bart Starr Plaza. The bronze statue was dedicated to Starr in the company of his wife, Cherry, and son, Bart Jr. Also in attendance were Packers president/CEO Bob Harlan and former p..

Turnovers Key To Results

Football is a very complex game, which is why so much practice and preparation go into each and every game played in the NFL.

Football can also be a very simple game, as Packers' GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said following his team's 21-10 loss to the Chicago Bears in their home opener Sunday.

Sherman wasn't taking any solace in the fact that the Packers outgained the Bears by nearly 100 yards, 404 to 307, or that they threw for more than twice as many yards as their opponent, 252 to 125.

No amount of yardage, third down conversion percentage, or first downs was going to change the only statistic that matters to the Packers' head man.

"The only stat that matters is the points you score and the points they score," said Sherman. "The yardage really doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot. I thought the Bears did a great job of winning the football game. They made the plays and did the things they had to do to win, and we didn't do those things."
Packers Suffer Difficult Defeat But Vow To Bounce Back

Winning in the NFL usually comes down to one universal theory: Hope for positive results on the road, but make certain that you don't lose at home, regardless of the opponent.

Of course, that is easier said than done, and the Packers found that out the hard way on Sunday afternoon against the Bears.

A week after a very impressive 24-14 win at Carolina, the Packers were downed by Chicago 21-10. Although Chicago came into the game with a home loss of their own last week to Detroit and the Packers were coming off a powerful win, the results were reversed for this game.

The Packers had beaten the Bears the last six meetings and 18 out of 20 and appeared to be in good shape once again Sunday. However, an unfortunate turn just before halftime made a huge difference. Faced with a first and goal on the Bears' two-yard line, Ahman Green got the carry, but coughed up the ball when Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher broke through to make the tackle. Safety Mike Brown..

AP Story: Bears Best Rival Packers, 21-10

Lovie Smith didn't take long to fulfill his No. 1 goal of beating Green Bay.

But the man who helped him do it wasn't around afterward to celebrate.

Mike Brown, whose 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown sparked the Bears' 21-10 victory over the Packers on Sunday, was lost for what could be an extended period with a right Achilles' tendon injury in the waning minutes.

When Smith was hired as Bears coach on Jan. 15, he declared his top priority was knocking off the Packers, the two-time defending division champs.

"I've never been in a fight where some guy told me he was going to beat me up and he beat me up," Packers linebacker Nick Barnett said.

Not only did Smith declare the Packers his top prize, but said he knew just how to beat them. The last two times he'd faced Green Bay was as the St. Louis Rams' defensive coordinator and the Packers committed a combined 10 turnovers in those games.

Brett Favre threw two interceptions..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Bears

The Chicago Bears come into Green Bay after losing last week to the Detroit Lions, who had lost 24 consecutive games on the road. After losing a tight one in their home opener, they are going to be looking to come out and play well at Lambeau Field.

This is the oldest rivalry, and maybe the best rivalry in the NFL. Regardless of the teams' records, and regardless of how the teams may be playing at the time, this is a great game for the fans, family and friends of the Green Bay Packers.

Brett Favre always steps to the challenge against Chicago.

Look for the offense to do what they always do, and get behind the offensive line, which is the strength of the team. They definitely want to come out and show the home crowd that what they did on Monday night was not a fluke.

They're going to control the line of scrimmage, protect Brett Favre, and allow him to take shots down the field when needed.

Right now, the good thing about the offens..

The success of the Green Bay Packers relies on more than just the players you see suited up or the coaches pacing the sidelines calling the plays on Sundays.

With nearly 200 employees on staff, the Packers consist of many different departments, each coming together for one common goal: the success of the team.

Under the direction of president/CEO Bob Harlan, the Packers last year were ranked the No. 1 organization in professional football for the second consecutive season and the top organization in all of professional sports in 2003, according to a survey produced by ESPN The Magazine.

Packers Notebook - Fisher Rushes Into Expanded Role

Running back Tony Fisher, who has developed into the Packers' third down specialist, will be looked upon to fill a bigger role in the Green Bay backfield Sunday. Fisher stepped up Monday night after Najeh Davenport exited the game with a strained hamstring, and will be looked upon to continue as Ahman Green's primary back-up when the Chicago Bears invade Lambeau Field for the home opener.

The former Notre Dame runner carried the ball nine times for 32 yards against Carolina, and also caught two passes en route to converting four of his 11 touches into Packer first downs.

Fisher said that he is looking forward to continuing the success that he and the rest of the team enjoyed in the running game, and will do whatever is asked of him to help get the Packers to 2-0.

"Whatever the coaches have confidence in me doing, I just go out there and try to make the best out of every opportunity," Fisher said. "When they give me a chance, I know my opportunities are li..

Packers To Honor Mark Hatley At American Heart Walk

Members of the Green Bay Packers organization will take part in the local American Heart Walk Saturday on the campus of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the three-mile walk getting underway at 9:00.

The American Heart Walk is a fund-raising event staged by the American Heart Association (AHA), with local walks being held throughout the country. This year, 750,000 walkers will participate in over 600 events across the United States.

The goal of the Northeast Wisconsin edition of the walk is to raise $175,000, with participants collecting sponsors for their efforts. To date, members of the Packers walking team has raised nearly $10,000 for the AHA.

Prior to the walk, the AHA will be honoring the late Mark Hatley. Hatley, who was entering his fourth season as the Packers' vice president of football operations passed away in July after suffering a heart attack at the age of 54.

Lee Ready To Step Into The Void

When a player of Grady Jackson's stature is missing due to injury - as the Packers starting nose tackle and resident run-stuffer will be Sunday - it's not easy for his replacement to just step right in and take over his job.

Second-year defensive lineman James Lee will get the call in the middle of the line in place of Jackson, who was felled with a dislocated kneecap Monday, in Sunday's home opener against the Chicago Bears.

Lee, who was drafted by the Packers out of Oregon State in the fifth round in 2003, will be just six days removed from his NFL debut when he makes his first start. In fact, the 6-foot-5, 325-lineman will be in the starting lineup for the first time since junior college, when he played at California's College of the Redwoods.

A back injury sustained just days into his rookie training camp last summer put Lee on injured reserve and wiped out his first season in Green Bay. He had a productive preseason this year, and continued to impres..

Packers-Bears: The Rivalry Continues

"The number one goal is to beat Green Bay."

Those are the words of Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, taken from the press conference to announce his hiring as the leader of the Packers' arch rival to the south back in January.

It is understandable that Smith would place such a high emphasis on the two annual meetings with the Packers, since the rivalry, with 166 previous games played, is the most-played match-up in NFL history, and one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports.

Additionally, the Packers hold a seven-game winning streak in the series, and have taken 20 of the 24 meetings since Brett Favre has been entrenched in the Green Bay backfield.

Though Smith's words might be considered bulletin board material, the general feel around Packers' camp was that the coach was just trying to inspire his players and fan base.

"He's a coach," said cornerback Al Harris. "He's got to say those things to get his players going. That's not ..

Monolithic Packers-Bears Rivalry Evokes Numerous Memories

It's a given that the Packers' venerable and storied "relationship" with the Chicago Bears, now well into its ninth decade, is a rivalry apart.

Just for sheer frequency alone. The immemorial antagonists have clashed no fewer than 166 times over their mutual, 83-year history - and thus remain the only two teams in National Football League annals to have squared off on more than 150 occasions.

And that is not to reference the competitive intensity that has typified this hallowed neighborhood feud, launched in 1921 when Warren Harding was in the White House. Remarkably, the average point differential over those 80-plus years and 166 contests is less than one point per game!

Additionally, the ancient enemies were the principals in the very first divisional playoff game in NFL history, a showdown staged in Chicago's Wrigley Field in 1941 after they closed out the regular season in a tie for Western Division honors with matching 10-1-0 records.
McHugh Finds Inspiration To Make It In NFL

Playing in the NFL is a dream of many youngsters that grow up and go through the football ranks. Unfortunately, only a few get the chance to fulfill their dreams.

Sean McHugh is one of those players that had NFL aspirations, and when the Tennessee Titans drafted him in the seventh round of April's draft, he was one step closer to realizing them. When the Titans informed him that he had been cut just before final rosters were set, McHugh certainly had to be crushed, right?

Well, not exactly.

McHugh, a 6-foot-5, 262-pound tight end out of Penn State said he wasn't shocked when the Titans decided to part ways. His dream may have been altered, but it wasn't over. The Packers picked him up on waivers and signed him to the 53-man roster.

"I wasn't really that shocked when the Titans cut me," McHugh recalled. "They drafted a tight end with their first pick so I knew it would be difficult to make that team. I was more excited when I found out that..

Teammates Welcome McKenzie Back

If there was any resentment towards Mike McKenzie in the Packers locker room over the past several weeks, you would never know it Wednesday as the family was back together again.

McKenzie, the team's incumbent starting left cornerback before his extended absence, ended his holdout and reported to Green Bay Wednesday morning. By mid-afternoon, the cornerback was back on the practice field with his teammates, trying to get up to speed in defensive coordinator Bob Slowik's new defensive scheme.

Following the practice, everyone in the Lambeau Field locker room was glad that their teammate was back in the fold, and was looking forward to seeing him out on the field as soon as possible.

Al Harris, who teamed with McKenzie to form one of the top cornerback tandems in the league in 2003, was especially happy to see the man in the neighboring locker back with the team.

"I'm very happy Mike's back," said Harris. "Hopefully everything got worked out, but he..

McKenzie Returns To Packers

Cornerback Mike McKenzie reported to the Green Bay Packers Wednesday morning, ending a holdout that began at the beginning of training camp in late July.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman welcomed McKenzie back to Green Bay as he met with the player and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, early Wednesday at Lambeau Field. Later in the day, Sherman addressed the media and stated that McKenzie will join the team for practice this afternoon.

Sherman said that McKenzie appeared to be in good shape, but will evaluate when he might return to the lineup after seeing him in action on the practice field.

"We have a two week window of when to activate him," said Sherman. "He looked like he had been training and he's in shape. That's a positive thing. We're just going to push the envelope in that area to try to get him ready as soon as possible. We'll take it day by day, however.

Remembering John 'Red' Cochran (1922-2004)

Note: The following article first appeared in the September edition of Packer Report

John Thurman "Red" Cochran wore the Green Bay Packers' green and gold with great pride for more than 40 years...typically, even on the last day of his life...

A man of unwavering principle and strong convictions, Red Cochran was one of a kind. He had a mind of his own and expressed it freely -- whether it was about football, politics or the economy...freely and impartially.

Especially about football and football players, because football was his life-long passion and profession -- as a player, coach and scout during a 50-year career highlighted by contributing to four NFL championships and a Super Bowl victory as a member of Vince Lombardi's Green Bay coaching staff in the highly successful '60s.

Although Red Cochran had a wide circle of friends, there probably is no one who has a greater appreciation for his commitment, his football knowledge and his tal..

Football 101: NFL Workshop for Women Returns November 9

The Green Bay Packers present Football 101, an NFL Workshop for Women, on the evening of November 9, 2004. Sponsored by <a href="http://www.usingers.com/"target="new">Usingers Famous Sausage and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, this year's event will take place in the Lambeau Field Atrium and in the Don Hutson Center.

While most people associate Packers football with 300-lb. linemen and muscle-bound linebackers, few recognize that almost half of all Packers fans are women. Simply put, women love their Packers! Football 101 provides women with an opportunity to learn about football in an interactive and entertaining format.

The evening's agenda includes the following:

4:30 - 5:00 PM:
Registration, Lambeau Field Atrium
Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments

5:00 - 5:45 PM:

Favre Delivers Old Magic When Needed

Maybe Brett Favre isn't the elite quarterback he once was.

Maybe the Green Bay Packers have become a run-first, throw-second team.

It still doesn't mean Favre is going to quietly settle into the background of a prime-time game. Monday Night Football always has been the Brett Favre Show, and the Packers' 24-14 season-opening victory against the Carolina Panthers was no exception.

Sure, for most of the night, Favre's right arm was busy thrusting toward the bellies of his running backs as he made handoff after handoff.

But on those limited occasions when he had the green light to throw, Favre did what he can still do better than many other players at his position. He fired bullets that picked up key first downs -- converting 5-of-6 third downs with his arm -- and put the Packers in scoring range. He rolled out, stepped up, and bought time. He even threw a touchdown pass, extending to 26 his streak of games with at least one.

Packers Notebook - Sherman, McKenzie To Meet Wednesday

Cornerback Mike McKenzie, who has been holding out and missed all of training camp as well as the first week of the regular season, will be returning to Green Bay for the first time since the end of the 2003 season.

The sixth-year defensive back has expressed displeasure with his current contract and did not participate in any of the team's offseason programs.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Tuesday afternoon that McKenzie will be in Green Bay Wednesday, and that the two will meet at Lambeau Field, but he was not sure what the result of the meeting will be.

"All I know is that I'm meeting with Mike tomorrow at 8 o'clock," said Sherman when reached in his office Tuesday.

He went on to say that he could not give a determination of McKenzie's potential on-field availability since he has not seen him in many months.

Letters To LeRoy Butler

Do professional players get motivated by press predictions? Such as most of the experts are picking the Vikings to win the North Division. Will Packer players use this as motivation? - Steve (West Allis, WI)

I think some of the players on the team take it personally when some people don't recognize how good this team really is. They look at it as motivation, but as long as the guys in the locker room know who the best team is, that's what matters, but the players definitely take it personally.

Hi LeRoy! Miss you on the field. What was it about Sterling Sharpe that made him so effective as a big play guy? Thanks - Patrick (La Crosse, WI)

You couldn't jam Sterling off the line. If a corner would try to play him bump-and-run, he would throw him down like a rag doll. He was one of the strongest receivers that has ever played the game, bar none. Also, he was smart and he had great hands.

Do you wish the Packers played more teams ..

Butler: Real Game, Real Packers

This is another reason why I tell people that if you go 1-3 or 0-4 in the preseason, it's not something that you need to be worried about. The preseason really doesn't have anything to do with the regular season, and the Packers proved that Monday night against Carolina.

Fans were nervous following the preseason, and starting the season with a tough opponent on the road. This goes to show that the Packers have some real pros on their team.

The game was dominated from the start by a group that I have to mention right off the bat, a group that is one of my favorite parts of this team, and a group that showed last night that they are one of the best in the league, and that's the offensive line.

The offensive line went against what is potentially the best defensive line in the NFL and dominated them. If they did that to one of the best defensive lines in the league, I would have to say that they are right up there for being the best offensive line in all o..

Bedell Fitting In Well With New Team

Life in the NFL isn't just crowded stadiums, hefty paychecks and a great deal of fame. To players like Brad Bedell, it involves much more than that.

Bedell, a 6-foot-4, 306-pound offensive lineman, happened to get caught in what is known as the "business side" of football on Sunday, September 5. That was the day when teams had to set their 53-man rosters, which always includes making tough decisions in who to keep, and who to cut.

Cut-down day is also known as a day of minor wheeling and dealing as teams address their needs in anticipation of the regular season. The Packers weren't pleased with their offensive line depth and they worked out a deal with the Miami Dolphins to acquire Bedell for a conditional 2006 draft choice.

To make a long story short, a player can be a Dolphin one day and a Packer the next and the only choice he has is to deal with it. For many players, that is a difficult concept to accept, but Bedell insists he didn't mind pack..

Defense Opens Things Up In Opening Win

Through the month of their recently completed training camp, if you were to talk to anyone on the defensive side of the ball for the Green Bay Packers, all you would hear about was the new, aggressive nature they would be bringing to the 2004 season under first-year coordinator Bob Slowik.

In Monday night's season opening win at Carolina, those promises came to fruition as the men in the green shirts attacked Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme from a number of different places. Slowik called many blitzes, especially in the first half, and the passer faced heat from both sides and up the middle with linebackers and defensive backs assisting in the pass rush.

Although they didn't always reach the quarterback, Delhomme was hurried often and many of his early throws were off target. Packers' GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman liked what he saw from his new-look defenders.

"You have a philosophy and you practice certain things," Sherman said following the win. "You t..

AP Story: Packers Run Past Panthers 24-14

The Green Bay Packers dealt the Carolina Panthers the kind of defeat now familiar to Super Bowl runner-ups.

Ahman Green ran up, down and all over the defending NFC champion Panthers, scoring three touchdowns to lead Green Bay to a 24-14 victory. That made Carolina the sixth consecutive team to lose in the Super Bowl and drop its ensuing season opener.

"I was surprised at how well we ran the ball," quarterback Brett Favre said. "Our philosophy is we'll wear you down before you wear us down."

The Packers could have had that chance in January, if not for Favre's errant final pass on his first snap in overtime of the divisional playoffs. The pass was intercepted and set up Philadelphia's winning field goal.

Carolina then beat the Eagles to advance to the first Super Bowl in team history.

But the Panthers looked nothing like that team in the 2004 season opener.

Unable to stop the run or run the ball -- the two main principles tha..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Panthers

Opening night on Monday Night Football. Going up against one of the best teams in the league in the Carolina Panthers. I can't think of a better way to get everyone excited for Green Bay Packers football right out of the starting gate.

Carolina is becoming a tough place to play on the road. This week, the guys will have to deal with a lot of noise when the offense is on the field.

On defense, you're going to see a lot of different formations that you didn't see in the preseason. I think Bob Slowik's defense has shown that they are going to be very aggressive.

Carolina brings two capable wide receivers in Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad is a big, physical receiver that likes to get matched up on smaller cornerbacks in the red zone. Smith is a big-time receiver that they try to get a lot of one-on-one matchups with. The quarterback, Jake Delhomme, can throw the ball down the field and see if he can outrun the cornerback.

Harris Inks Extension, Keeps Focus On The Field

The Green Bay Packers had breaking contract news involving one of their starting cornerbacks on Saturday, but it might not be the one most Packer fans might have expected.

Second-year Packer and seventh-year pro Al Harris agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with the team, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said following the team's Saturday practice.

Harris, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the 2004 season, will now be manning the Packers' right cornerback position for many years to come.

The former Texas A&M-Kingsville man is coming off his first year as a regular starter, opening all 16 games for the Packers in 2003 after coming over in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles in March of that year.

He totaled 46 tackles and three interceptions in his first year in the Green and Gold, but made his most famous contribution on what is now one of the most memorable plays in Packers history.

Packers Notebook - Green Ready To Go

With all the talk surrounding the match-up of the Packers' offensive line and the Panthers' defensive line, one of the men who will have an up close view of that battle has been quietly going about his business in preparation for Monday night's game.

Running back Ahman Green, who is coming off a team-record 1,883-yard rushing season in 2003, said Friday that he's ready to get out on the field for the first time in a "real game" this season.

"I'm very excited," Green said. "Training camp is very long, and you've just got to be patient and make your way through it. Once you get through it, you're ready to have some fun in a real game against a real opponent."

The runner went on to say the while he may now be the focus of the offense, he looks to be of as much help to the team by drawing the attention of defenders, and allowing everyone around him to benefit.

"It's very important to establish the run. That gives your offense the time to pick plays ..

Laying It On The Line

The old adage says that football games are won and lost in the trenches. Seemingly no game would epitomize that more than Monday night's opener between the Packers and the Carolina Panthers.

The Packers' offensive line, anchored by a pair of Pro Bowlers in center Mike Flanagan and right guard Marco Rivera, is regarded as one of the best in the league. All five starters return to the group that paved the way for Ahman Green's NFC-best 1,883 rushing yards, as the team also led the conference and ranked third in the NFL in rushing in 2003.

Lining up across from the five workhorses in Green and Gold will be one of the top defensive line groups in the game.

The Panthers' front four features a pair of Pro Bowlers to match the Packers' duo, with defensive tackle Kris Jenkins and defensive end Mike Rucker each making the trip to Honolulu following the 2003 season.

Favre Ready To Open It Up

Quarterback Brett Favre is no stranger to Opening Day. The veteran gunslinger will be making his 12th straight Opening Day start under center for the Packers when he settles in behind Mike Flanagan Monday night in Carolina.

Favre knows the importance of getting out to a fast start, and as he spoke Wednesday, you got the feeling that he's ready to get the season underway. He may not be all that excited about seeing the defending NFC champions on the opposing sideline, but Favre said that the Panthers will give the Packers a real test early on, and show them what they're made of.

"It's exciting," said the quarterback. "All games, especially openers, should be exciting. When you get a chance to play on Monday Night Football, what better showcase is there? Unfortunately, we're playing at Carolina. It's a big test for us. They've got a real good football team. I think they have as good as any front four we've ever faced. We'll find out what we are right out of t..

Live Chat To Welcome Mark Roman, Friday At Approximately 2:30 PM CT

A second-round draft choice by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2000, Mark Roman spent his first two years in the NFL as a cornerback before moving to free safety in 2002 (he made the reverse transition in college, shifting to cornerback as a senior following three seasons as a starter at free safety).

Entering his fifth year in the NFL, Roman has been on the winning side of football games only 20 times in 66 attempts as a pro, and in March, the former LSU Tiger left Cincinnati and joined the Packers as an unrestricted free agent.

"My main focus (of free agency) was to play for a winning team, but the reputation of the Packers kind of speaks for itself," Roman told Packers.com after signing in March. "They're always viewed as one of the NFL's elite teams, and that means a lot to me. I mean, playing in the league is one thing, but playing for the Packers and having a chance to win the Big Game year in and year out - that's a chance you embrace as soon as it comes along."

Packers Notebook - Roman Loves Football

With 20 of his 22 starters returning from the 2003 season, Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman is pleased with the continuity that will come with the carry-over. He is also extremely happy with one of his two new starters, both for his contributions on the field, and for the way in which he carries himself.

Mark Roman, who signed with the club as an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, will be lining up at strong safety alongside Darren Sharper when the Packers take the field in Charlotte Monday night. Sherman said Wednesday that he will be more comfortable with this safety tandem than any he's fielded in the past few seasons.

Sherman also said that he admires what Roman brings to the team with his attitude, and has been impressed with him since meeting the defensive back when he was a prep star.

"He has a football demeanor about him where he's talking about football 24/7 and certainly on the sidelines during the game," Sherman said. "During practi..

Scott Wells Training Camp Diary - Part VI

Training camp is in the books for Scott Wells, along with the rest of the Packers. The final week of camp was eventful for the rookie from the University of Tennessee, to say the least.

Highlighted by a trip to Nashville to play a game in his home state, the week also saw Wells learn the harsh reality of life in the NFL.

Wells was waived by the Packers Sunday as the team had to pare its roster down to 53 for the regular season. The team's seventh-round pick in April's draft wasn't gone for long, though, as he returned Monday as a member of the practice squad.

In the sixth and final installment of Wells' training camp diary, he talks about the days leading up to the end of camp and how he's ready to get to work on the regular season.

Scott Wells: I thought the last week of training camp went pretty well overall. The coaches had me working some at guard as well as center. That was a new spot for me, and I thought I did a pretty good job in..

Packers Help Launch 35th Season Of Monday Night Football

Packers, helping to launch 35th season of 'Monday Night Football,' made winning debut when primetime showcase began in 1970

It was early in the fall of 1970 and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, an innovative promoter of his game, was in the process of launching an intriguing addition to the nation's sports scene... "Monday Night Football."

Intriguing, certainly, because football - both college and professional - long had been almost exclusively a Saturday-Sunday event.

Although it since has become a Monday night fixture on network television and a national viewing habit, the innovation was introduced with surprising restraint - at least from the league's perspective.

In a six-page "Preview of the Season" in the NFL's 1970 "Official Record Manual," the only reference to "Monday Night Football" came in the final sentence, with this low-key announcement..."For the next four years, CBS has the broadcasting rights to NFC games, NBC ha..

Letters To LeRoy Butler

Hi LeRoy, With the season just around the corner, who is the one player you see having a break-out season? GO PACK!!! - Michael (Neenah, WI)

I see Chad Clifton making the Pro Bowl this year. I think he's ready to raise his game to another level in 2004.

I think Ahman Green might very well get 2,000 yards rushing this year.

There is the possibility that three of the Packers' five offensive linemen could be heading to the Pro Bowl this season. The potential on offense is unlimited, but if I had to pick just one guy who I think is going to step up this year, I would pick Chad Clifton.

Do you have a sense that our two rookie cornerbacks have a lot of heart? On talent alone, I can see good things in the future, but I wanted to know if you can see a fire in either one of them to become something special. - Joe (Woodbury, MN)

Absolutely. I think both of these guys are tough mentally, and they will be thrown into the fire early...

Butler: Don't Worry, The Real Games Are Still To Come

With the storm that passed through Florida over the weekend, power was knocked out at my house and I wasn't able to see most of Friday night's game against Tennessee.
Since I can't really provide any analysis from a game I didn't see, today's column will be an overview of the where the Packers are as they head into the season.

I've been getting a lot of e-mails from fans who are worried about the 1-3 record in the preseason, but I'd like to put their mind at ease about the upcoming season.

Preseason is a time where you evaluate talent. Winning games is always important, but the most important things in the preseason are to get a good look at the young guys, and keep everybody healthy for the regular season. Winning games in August will not determine who wins the Super Bowl in February.

This Packers team is going to be a good one. 20 of the 22 starters are back from last year's team that was a playoff team. The framework is still in place. The ..

Truluck In A (Pass) Rush To Get Going

The Sunday following the final weekend of preseason game is always a nervous time for players fighting for roster spots in the NFL.

Although R-Kal Truluck had a feeling he wasn't going to be a Kansas City Chief much longer, he wasn't nervous about the cut-down day. He knew he'd be playing football somewhere, but the 29-year old didn't know where.

That's where the Packers came in. Looking to improve the team's pass rush, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman traded a pair of draft picks (fifth- and sixth-round selections in 2005) to the Chiefs to acquire the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end.

"I wasn't surprised that I was traded," Truluck said Monday after arriving at Lambeau Field. "I was more surprised to find out that I was coming to Green Bay. I felt like a trade was going to happen. I knew going into Sunday that something would happen."

Surprised as he may have been to be coming to Wisconsin, the native of Brooklyn, New York is thrilled to be a Pack..

Training Camp 2004 One To Remember

Another Packers training camp is now officially in the books, and judging from the massive crowds at the large number of activities throughout the month-long camp, the 2004 edition of Packers training camp could only be described as a full success.

"I'd like to say thank you to all of the Packer fans, who made this one of the most exciting training camps in recent memory," Packers' Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer John Jones said.

"I think camp was such a success because of their enthusiasm and excitement, and because it was the first year that Lambeau Field and Lambeau Field Atrium could be fully available to them," Jones continued.

"We saw a lot of families, and a lot of fans of all ages coming and enjoying practices and soaking in the Packers atmosphere, and really bringing the experience to training camp that Bob Harlan and myself and everyone in the organization hoped that first camp in the new stadium would have.

Packers Notebook - Favre & Ferguson Continue Scoring Punch

Although the Packers offense struggled once again in the preseason finale at Tennessee, there were a few bright spots.

For the second consecutive week, the Brett Favre to Robert Ferguson connection was on display. In last week's game at Jacksonville the pair hooked up on a 52-yard pass play and this week they connected on a 53-yard touchdown, the Packers only score of the game.

Ferguson finished with two catches for 59 yards and Favre completed 10 of 20 passes for 113 yards. He also had two interceptions before giving way to Tim Couch in the second half.

The loss drops the Packers to 1-3 in the preseason and gives them nine days to prepare for their season opener at Carolina on September 13. The rest will serve the team well giving numerous players time for their injuries to heal up.

One of those injuries includes Donald Driver, who sprained his ankle on the Packers' third offensive play of the game. GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said that Dr..

Carroll Steps Up In Starting Role

Packers' first-round draft choice Ahmad Carroll has been on a quick learning curve throughout his first NFL training camp. The 21-year-old cornerback from the University of Arkansas has been locked in a battle for the starting left cornerback spot since the day he signed his contract.

Friday night in Nashville, the rookie took a step forward in making his case to in that starting lineup when the regular season opens in just over a week.

Due to a strained back, Michael Hawthorne was unable to go against the Tennessee Titans, opening the door for Carroll's first start of his NFL career. Carroll jumped at the chance, eager to face the challenge of 2003 co-MVP Steve McNair.

Carroll continued to show off the attribute that has been most visible throughout the preseason, his blazing speed. The rookie was matched up with Titans' receiver Eddie Berlin for much of the first half, and he blanketed the fourth-year player for much of the night.
AP Story: Titans Rolle Past Packers In Preseason Finale

At least the Green Bay Packers know what needs to be fixed before their season opener.

Tennessee's Samari Rolle tipped a pass to linebacker Keith Bulluck, who returned the interception 70 yards for a touchdown, and then Rolle picked off a Brett Favre pass to help lead the Titans to a 27-7 win over the Packers on Friday night.

The Packers (1-3) finished with four turnovers despite holding the ball for nearly 34 minutes.

"I don't put a whole lot of stock in the outcome of the game," Packers coach Mike Sherman said. "I do in four turnovers in this game, and the fact that there are some plays to be made we didn't make."

Tennessee (3-1) had given up 240 yards passing to Vinny Testaverde in losing at Dallas five days ago. But with starting cornerbacks Rolle and Andre Dyson together for the first time this preseason, the Titans held Favre to 110 yards.

"There is a big difference having him in the game," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said of Rolle..

Smallish McBrien Coming Up Large

"You're 5-foot nothin', 100 and nothin'.........And you hung in there with the best college football team in the land for 2 years."

Well, the Green Bay Packers organization is worlds apart from a college team and he hasn't been here for two years, but the aforementioned line from the movie "Rudy" does apply to rookie quarterback Scott McBrien.

McBrien is listed at 6-0, but he may be closer to 5-11, and he tips the scales at 188 pounds. At first glance, he hardly looks anything like a professional football player. That is, until you watch him practice.

The former Maryland star has opened more than a few eyes with his training camp performance. He has shown an above average arm and the ability to make plays on the run, which offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said sets McBrien apart from other quarterbacks.

"I would say that because of his feet and legs he plays fast," Rossley said. "Anytime he takes a snap his play time seems faster than the ..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Titans

This final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans should be a good one to watch for many reasons. I think the fans should be excited about this game because, not only is it the last game before the 53-man roster is set, but also because of the high level of competition from the other side of the ball as well.

As long as the Packers' starters are in the game, they will be facing a team that has the potential to be a Super Bowl team in Tennessee, coached by Jeff Fisher. His teams are always very aggressive. One thing that worries me is that they often get lots of penalties, and they might draw the Packers into the same kind of game.

I will really be looking for the Packers to come out fast in this game. That needs to be a focus of the team this year. I'd love to see them come out, force a turnover, and get on the scoreboard first. When you go on the road, you always look to score first and take the home crowd out of the game.

Tennessee is a tough p..

Training Camp Report - September 2

The Green Bay Packers held a brief walkthrough practice Thursday morning inside Lambeau Field in preparation for Friday's game in Nashville against the Tennessee Titans.

The Packers will be on the road for their final exhibition game of the season, before opening the regular season September 13 at Carolina. In the three preseason games they have played so far, the Green and Gold has won one and lost two.

There is precious little time left for the players still trying to crack the Opening Day roster. With the roster currently at 74 players, the Packers have plenty of decisions to make in order to cut down to 53 by 3:00 p.m. Sunday. While it may be just a preseason game to some, the exhibition finale holds plenty of significance for others such as linebacker Tyreo Harrison and defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.

"I think by now you just have to go out there and play hard," Harrison said. "You have to put everything out there like it's the last game of you..

'Spooktacular Fun' Returns To Lambeau Field Atrium, October 16

In 2003, the inaugural 'Spooktacular Fun' event offered people in the community an opportunity to bring their children to the Lambeau Field Atrium to enjoy Halloween 'Lambeau' style.

Complimentary entertainment featured interactive and entertaining activities on the main stage and four side stages, including sing-along music, magic, miming, clowns and jugglers.

Children were also given the opportunity to have their faces painted, and they received a Green Bay Packers reflector to wear on their costumes during trick or treating.

The Lambeau Field Atrium has given the Green Bay Packers a unique venue to periodically host events throughout the year that are open to the community to enjoy and participate in at no cost.

'Spooktacular Fun' will return to Lambeau Field Atrium, October 16, 2004. Fans are invited to join the fun from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lambeau Field A Collection Point For 'Coats for Kids,' Sept. 19

Lambeau Field has traditionally been a collection point for the Coats for Kids campaign during one regular season game. Over the last four years, fans have donated more than 500 coats and more than $19,000 to the 'Coats for Kids' collection.

Last year, Green Bay Packers players Cletidus Hunt, Tony Fisher and Kevin Barry gave their support to the annual Coats for Kids campaign by signing autographs for anyone who dropped off a coat at Lindeman's Dry Cleaners in Green Bay.

Packers Notebook - Navies Comfortable In Scheme

What a difference a year can make. Those are the words that linebacker Hannibal Navies expressed when he discussed the upcoming season, his second as a Packer.

With new defensive coordinator Bob Slowik running the unit, one would expect an adjustment period. However, Navies said the defense is more comfortable now than they were a year ago.

"As far as our defense is concerned, we're a lot further along," Navies said. "We've played together for a whole year and we basically have the same unit in there. It's just more cohesive this year, and I feel a lot more energy out there and a lot more communication. We're excited about this year.

"It's a totally different feel this year than I had last year. The linebackers know where we're going to be and how we're going to react to the plays. We also know where the linemen are going to be. We're just more communicative on the field."

Passion Still Burns Inside Of Favre

Brett Favre has played 13 years in the NFL, and along the way he has won a Super Bowl and three MVP awards. As the owner of several passing records, as well as the all-time leader in consecutive starts by a quarterback, it would be understandable if the fire for the game didn't burn quite as hot as it once did for the Packers' signal-caller.

Favre said Wednesday the game means as much to him as it always has, and it shows in how he feels before a game.

"I get nervous," Favre explained. "I think that is a good sign. In my opinion, if you don't get nervous or have some sort of excitement within, it probably doesn't mean as much to you. I am more at ease with my career, with this offense and the NFL in general, but it's still a game."

It's a game that few have played more passionately than the Packers' all-time passing leader.

"The nervousness that I feel now is in some ways similar to years past, but the only difference is that in your first ..

Training Camp Report - September 1

The Green Bay Packers took to the practice field for the final time during their 2004 training camp Wednesday. Fans lined the fences of Clarke Hinkle Field to get a last up-close glimpse of their gridiron heroes in training as they prepared for their upcoming preseason finale Friday night.

The practice marked the last time the Packers will take to Clarke Hinkle Field in its present state, as construction will begin as early as this weekend on renovations to the training ground. A top-flight drainage system is set to be installed with a new natural grass surface placed on top of it to improve its future viability. The renovations are scheduled to be completed prior to next summer's training camp.

Practice got underway with a 30-minute session of special teams work. Special teams coordinator John Bonamego put his group through the drills, with much of the time focusing on kickoff coverage and returns.
