Packers Notebook - Coach's Report: The Day After

Only hours after his Green Bay Packers finished off their sixth consecutive win with a resounding 45-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman and his coaching staff was back in the office getting to work on a short week of preparation for Sunday's upcoming game at the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the players enjoying their customary Tuesday off-day, Sherman ran through a brief list of injuries coming out of the Monday night game.

Najeh Davenport, who ran through the St. Louis defense for a career-best 178 yards and a touchdown, bruised his ribs on the third play of the game but played on and bruised the Rams defense the rest of the night.

The only other ding of any significance mentioned by Sherman was a sprained ankle incurred by wide receiver Robert Ferguson. The coach expects both players to be well enough to play their full roles Sunday in Philly.

Sherman did report that Ahman Green, who was sidelined for the St. Louis game ..

Packers-Eagles Rivalry

TITLE GAME 'FALL' AT PHILLY SET STAGE FOR PACKERS' DYNASTY OF '60s: 9 PLAYOFF WINS IN ROW (5 NFL TITLES, 2 'SUPER' VICTORIES)

It was the day after Christmas in 1960 and Vince Lombardi was addressing the Packers in the capacious visitors' locker room at Philadelphia's Franklin Field only minutes after their NFL Championship Game against the Eagles had ended.

At that moment, Lombardi was in the process of making a profound promise to his players, who had barely come up short when fullback Jim Taylor was felled at the Philadelphia 8-yard line by Chuck Bednarik as time expired, thereby closing out a 17-13 victory for the Eagles.

"We will never lose another championship game," he vowed.

And thus, in effect, was launched what was to become the greatest postseason dynasty in professional football history.

For Lombardi, never one to make such commitments lightly, was as good as his word.

Fulfilling his Franklin Field "proclamation,..

Packers Don't Miss A Beat With Davenport Carrying The Load

Monday may have been "Brett Favre Day" in Wisconsin, but it certainly will be one that Najeh Davenport remembers for a very long time, too.

The third-year running back made his first career start and it's safe to say he made the most of it. With Ahman Green unable to play because of a rib injury, Davenport took over the reins and the Packers didn't miss a beat. They had little trouble in their 45-17 blowout over the St. Louis Rams and much of that was due to Davenport's career performance.

Davenport finished with 178 yards on 19 carries capped by a 40-yard touchdown in his most extensive action in his NFL career. What makes Davenport's night even more remarkable is the fact that he had two sore hamstrings and until late last week his availability for the game was still up in the air.

Whatever pain he was going through, Davenport did a masterful job of hiding it. He finished off runs and he played like a man who wanted to make the most of his opportu..

Favre's Streak Defined By His Greatness

What can you possibly say about Brett Favre? No matter how you choose your words, it's very difficult to describe what he has meant to the Green Bay Packers and the NFL for the last 13 seasons.

"Tough," "legendary" and "winner" appear at the top of the list and surely every player would love to be remembered by any one of those terms. But when you talk about Brett Favre, the owner of a Super Bowl ring, three MVP awards and records too numerous to list, one word just may fit better than all the rest.

Greatness.

No matter what Favre does the rest of his career, he will forever be known in NFL history as one of the all-time greats. The fact that he keeps adding to his legacy is what makes him even more special.

Monday night marked the 200th consecutive regular season start for Favre, but for a man who has played in so many games, he may be playing as well now as he ever has in the past. Three touchdowns and a 45-17 triumph over the St. Louis Rams..

Youngsters Help Lead Defensive Push

Going into Monday night's clash between the Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Rams, many figured the game to be an offensive shootout between two of the more high-powered teams in the NFL.

Apparently someone sent an invitation to the end zone party to the Green Bay defense as well, as the home team's defenders nearly matched St. Louis' offense in points production with two touchdowns of their own in the Packers' 45-17 runaway victory.

The defensive unit, which GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman has been exhorting to produce more turnovers all season, did just that Monday night with Ahmad Carroll and Michael Hawthorne each returning Isaac Bruce fumbles for six points in the win.

Less than three minutes into the game, the Packers' top two selections in last April's draft - Carroll and Joey Thomas - teamed up for their biggest play to date in their young Packer careers.

Thomas made a veteran play by prying the ball out of Bruce's arm as he tackled the recei..

AP Story: Favre Shines On His Day In 45-17 Win

The governor proclaimed it " Brett Favre Day," and the night belonged to the quarterback, too.

Favre celebrated his 200th straight regular-season start with three touchdown passes and yet another record in the Green Bay Packers ' 45-17 rout of the St. Louis Rams.

Favre topped 20 touchdown passes for the 11th straight season, breaking a tie with Dan Marino on a 7-yard toss to tight end Bubba Franks in the second quarter. He also threw touchdown passes to Javon Walker and Donald Driver as the Packers (7-4) got two defensive touchdowns and won their sixth straight to keep pace with Minnesota atop the NFC North.

Favre didn't have his co-star, Ahman Green, who was out with injured ribs. But Najeh Davenport came up with a strong imitation, gaining 178 yards on 19 carries in his first NFL start even though he had two sore hamstrings.

Davenport said after the fifth-highest single-game rushing total in franchise history that he was just glad to be a par..

Letters To Lee Remmel

Hello, Mr. Remmel. Your recollections and analysis are wonderful. There have been a lot of stories written about Johnny Blood McNally. I was wondering if you ever met him, what your impressions were, and how he ranked as a player. Thank you. - Dave (Des Moines, IA)

I did have the privilege, as a sportswriter/columnist for the Green Bay Press-Gazette (1944-74), of meeting and interviewing the fabled Johnny "Blood" McNally, who probably was the most daring and colorful player (on and off the field) in Packers history. For example, at one point during Johnny's playing career, Coach Curly Lambeau - concerned because McNally was inclined to break curfew and sneak out on the town, allegedly locked him in his hotel room the night before a game against the Bears in Chicago. Johnny, however, being a highly resourceful citizen, reportedly tied some bed sheets together, lowered himself out of his hotel window to the ground and proceeded to get out "among them."

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Rams

I know everyone has a few bad memories from the last few times the Packers have gone to St. Louis to play the Rams in their place, so if you're looking at this game with a little bit of a revenge factor, there might be some, but this team needs to keep their focus on this season and this five-game winning streak.

The biggest story around this game has got to be Brett Favre's 200th straight start. Just think about this. Everything you've done or everything you will do - think about doing it 200 times. You will know just how great this feat really is.

Whether it's eating 200 hamburgers, jumping rope 200 times, or even watching 200 games in a row can be tough. In this day and age, a football player only averages playing about 50-75 games in their entire career, but this guy has now been out there to start every game for 200 in a row, playing through adversity both on and off the field, and he continues to lace 'em up every week.

Backfield Status Still Up In The Air

Two days before kickoff of their Monday night clash with the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau Field, it's still unclear who will be available at running back for GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman's Green Bay Packers.

Starter Ahman Green left last Sunday's game with injured ribs and was unable to practice all week. Second-stringer Najeh Davenport missed last week's game with a hamstring ailment, but returned to the practice field Friday and was out there again Saturday.

Walter Williams, who filled in for Davenport and then Green last week before leaving that game with an ankle sprain continued to be out Saturday, but the Packers did have some positive news when fullback Nick Luchey returned to work in a limited role.

With Luchey testing his shoulder that he separated in Houston by hitting the blocking sleds, freshly-signed James Jackson continued his work learning the playbook and becoming acclimated with his new team.

Confidence Grows With On-Field Training

Over the past few months, the Packers' defensive backfield has undergone a bit of a shakeup due to injuries and other lineup changes. Two players who started the season as reserves have found themselves in the starting 11 and have made the most of their opportunities, gaining confidence along the way.

Ahmad Carroll, the team's first-round draft pick in April after coming out of the University of Arkansas following his junior season, was inserted into the starting lineup at left cornerback opposite Al Harris five games ago.

Fourth-year player Bhawoh Jue, a third-round selection as a cornerback from Penn State in 2001, has started each of the last three games at safety in place of an injured Darren Sharper and made some big plays.

In the win over the Washington Redskins just before the bye week, Jue took advantage of his extended playing time and picked off a pass. He also made a crucial recovery of a surprise onside kick as a member of the special teams in..

KGB Coming On

Early in the season, there was much concern around Green Bay over the lack of production by the Packers' pass rush.

Through seven games the team had amassed just 10 sacks, slightly more than one per contest. This fell well short of their output from the past three seasons, which saw the Pack bring down opposing passers 52, 43, and 34 times respectively in 2001, 2002, and 2003, an average of at least two sacks per game each season.

When you think of the Packers' pass rush in recent years, one name comes to mind, and it's that of defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Along with the rest of his defensive teammates, KGB was statistically off to a slow start in 2004.

Through the team's first seven games, he had registered just a sack and a half (all coming in week four against the New York Giants), also well off from his output over the past three seasons. From 2001-03, Gbaja-Biamila ranked fifth in the NFL with 35.5 sacks and was just one of four players to re..

Packers Invite Rams To Step Outside

For the first time since 1997, the Packers will play host to the St. Louis Rams and their high-powered offensive attack at Lambeau Field Monday night. Since that last Wisconsin meeting, the two teams have crossed paths twice in the climate-controlled conditions of the Edward Jones Dome, both clashes going the way of the home team.

The Rams, whose offensive prowess has been near the top in the league for the better part of the last decade, are a speed-driven team who take advantage of the fast artificial surface and non-existent wind conditions of their home stadium.

With multiple weapons on the offensive side of the ball, they earned the nickname "The Greatest Show on Turf."

A reminder about Monday night's game, though - speedy receivers Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt and shifty running back Marshall Faulk won't be making their quick cuts on the sure Astroturf footing of their dome.

Banged Up Backfield Gets Reinforcements

The Green Bay Packers, whose backfield has been riddled with injuries over the past few weeks, got some good news Thursday as Najeh Davenport returned to the practice field. Thursday's Thanksgiving morning workout also marked the second day of on-the-field training for recent signee James Jackson.

Jackson, a former third round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2001, was signed Tuesday to provide some depth to the depleted running back corps. His addition brings the total number of tailbacks on the Packers' roster to five, with two more fullbacks on the 53-man squad.

However, four of those seven players - Davenport, Ahman Green, Nick Luchey, and Walter Williams - appear on this week's injury report heading into the Monday night match-up with the St. Louis Rams, and of those four three are questionable, Davenport the only exception as he's listed as probable.

200 Just Another Number

Brett Favre will once again run out of the tunnel at Lambeau Field Monday night as he is announced as the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Though he's been doing it week in and week out since 1992, this entrance should carry some special meaning with it as the game will mark Favre's 200th consecutive regular season start for the Green and Gold.

Or so you would think.

When asked about his remarkable achievement of durability - no other player in Packers history has even played in 200 games, let alone started 200 in a row - the quarterback downplayed the occasion, saying it should carry no more significance than the previous 199.

"It means a lot, but I treat this game no differently than I've treated other games," said Favre Wednesday. "The fact that I'm still here and playing I think speaks for itself. I'm fortunate in a lot of ways to be able to do this and to overcome injuries, adversity and still play at a high enough level that the Pack..

Lambeau Field Atrium Becoming Nationally-Known Convention Destination

It never fails. Whenever someone mentions the mystique of Lambeau Field, cherished memories usually dominate the conversation. Lately, however, those cherished memories have taken on a whole new meaning.

The redevelopment of Lambeau Field and addition of the Lambeau Field Atrium, which was completed in September 2003, has given fans the opportunity to create their own memories in one of the most storied venues in the world. Events such as weddings, corporate meetings and retirement parties are all now common occurrences at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.

Revenue generated from the Atrium is invested back into the team, helping pay for tools such as the latest technology in sports video. It also helps solidify the corporate reserve fund, which also could aid the team if a financial crisis would ever occur.

According to Dee Geurts-Bengtson, the Packers executive of special events, Lambeau Field is no longer just a destination for 10 football games each year. ..

Letters To LeRoy Butler

Everyone in Green Bay and Wisconsin knows that William Henderson is one heck of a fullback, but it seems that his talent isn't recognized around the league. He is having a terrific year so far, not only on offense, but on special teams as well. It seems that when William Henderson hits someone, they go down with force! And who knew that he was such a great hurdler? He has been named a Pro Bowl Alternate in past years, what do you think his chances are of going as a starter this year? - Linda (Fond du Lac, WI)

The reason why William hasn't been to the Pro Bowl in the past is that everyone voted for Mike Alstott (who's not really even a true fullback) because it was a popularity contest. There is no fullback in the league that is more valuable to his team than William Henderson.

He catches passes, he makes pancake blocks, and he's one of the leading tacklers on special teams. He's the first guy down there covering kicks. This guy is in his 30s and he's be..

Butler: A Priceless Victory

Man, what a game. Just like I try to tell you guys each week, you've got to be patient because it may be like this all year, where the Packers start slow and eventually win the game.

To go and score 13 points in the fourth quarter - the end of that game was just phenomenal.

But look at it this way:

Donald Driver - 10 catches, 148 yards and a touchdown.

Javon Walker - 9 catches, 88 yards.

Brett Favre - 50 attempts, completed 33, 383 yards.

Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila - 2 sacks.

Winning on Ryan Longwell's right foot again - priceless.

It just seemed like it was set up to be a great finish. Being down 13-3 at the half, I'm sure a lot of you were going to the kitchen and slamming the refrigerator, eating in the kitchen and refusing to watch the game.

But the loyal fans that I know you are, you came back and saw the Packers defense not only turn it around, but pitch a shutout in the second half. That let everyb..

Packers-Rams History

GREATEST COMEBACK IN PACKERS HISTORY, KEY WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF HIGHLIGHT 7-DECADE SERIES WITH RAMS

The Packers and the St. Louis Rams, who will make mutual history next week when they meet on the "Monday Night Football" showcase for the first time, have forged more than a few historic adventures over the course of their seven-decade "association."

Curiously, two of the most memorable occurred in Milwaukee - at County Stadium, the Packers' second home from 1953-1994, which since has fallen to the wrecking ball.

Chief among them, without question, was a critical 28-7 victory over the Rams in a 1967 Western Conference playoff which propelled the Packers into the fabled "Ice Bowl" against the Dallas Cowboys, played in Lambeau Field just eight days later.

Close behind, from the historical perspective, was a salutary happening on Sept. 12, 1982.

The Green and Gold, down 23-0 at halftime, proceeded to execute the most dramatic comeba..

Mr. Clutch

When you play for a team with the history that the Green Bay Packers sport, it isn't very often that you're able to accomplish a feat that has only been done once before in the previous 85 seasons of play.

Outside of the exploits of Brett Favre, who has virtually rewritten the Green and Gold's record books in his 13 seasons under center in Green Bay, not many current Packers can say they have accomplished such unique accomplishments.

Ryan Longwell has done just that.

With his back-to-back last-second game-winning field goals the past two Sundays, the eighth-year kicker from the University of California joins Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud as the only men to send the Packers to the locker room on winning field goals as time expired in consecutive weeks.

Longwell's heroics came on a 33-yarder to provide the final margin in the 34-31 win over the Minnesota Vikings last week and a 46-yard kick that he snuck through the uprights to end th..

AP Story: Favre Leads Packers To Victory Over Texans

Brett Favre sat silently as his Green Bay teammates anxiously chatted during halftime.
Trailing by 10 points and down to only one healthy tailback, the Packers were desperately searching for an offensive spark. They found the solution in a familiar place.

"I just listened because I knew what we needed to do," Favre said. "And the talk wasn't going to get it done."

Favre led the Pack all the way back in the fourth quarter and Ryan Longwell kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Packers to their fifth straight win, 16-13 over the Houston Texans.

Favre completed 6 of 7 passes for 42 yards on the final drive -- the only incompletion came when he spiked the ball to stop the clock -- to complete Green Bay's rally from a 10-point deficit in the final quarter.

He finished 33 of 50 for 383 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown to Houston native Donald Driver in the fourth period. Driver had quite a homecoming, catching 10 p..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Texans

The Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers - if you take a look at both of these teams, they have a lot of similarities.

Although one team is a recent expansion franchise, they've been playing extremely well in spurts, possibly even underachieving for the talent they have on their roster.

The Green Bay Packers, one of the oldest franchises in the league, started off slow but have been hot of late.

Both teams - when they play up to their capabilities - could be playoff teams.

The Texans are a very dangerous team. I don't think you can look at last week's game for an accurate picture of them, since they just ran into a buzzsaw in a hot Peyton Manning in Indianapolis.

On defense, Houston has been very aggressive. I think one thing the Packer offense has to understand is that these guys will blitz at any time. The Texans run a traditional 3-4 defense like their coach Dom Capers has been known for over the course of his career.

Packers Notebook - Familiar Friday News

For the second week in a row, one of the main concerns on the injury front for the Packers leading into the weekend is the availability of starting free safety Darren Sharper.

Much like last week, Sharper - who is coming off a knee sprain suffered October 24, practiced for the first time this week Friday afternoon after resting on Wednesday and Thursday.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said in his post-practice press conference that he hopes to have Sharper available for at least as many snaps as the two-time Pro Bowler was in on last Sunday in the win over the Minnesota Vikings, where he played in the dime defensive package.

"I would hope I will be able to use him in that capacity, maybe a little bit more," Sherman said. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow. Today was the first day he really got work, so I really have to wait until tomorrow to see how he came out of today."

Also much like seven days ago, Sharper is a little more optimistic than his coach..

Packers Have Valuable Insurance Plan In Nall

Since 1992 when Brett Favre began his career with the Green Bay Packers, you've been able to count on two things. One, the team has always been competitive, and two, there's a better chance you'd win the lottery than see another quarterback start a game.

While the second statement may seem like a bit of an exaggeration, consider that Favre (including playoffs) has now started 217 consecutive games. On occasion, he has missed some snaps during that streak but never a start.

With that in mind you may get an idea of what Favre's backups have gone through during the streak. Not only have they been able to relax knowing the odds of playing were very low, but also in many cases they probably became bored. After all, carrying a clipboard can only be so exciting.

In these cases, backup quarterback Craig Nall said that you just have to try to improve and wait your turn, no matter how long that wait may be. For Nall, that may be the right attitude to take as ..

Stop Them In Their Tracks

When the Packers defense takes the field Sunday night against the Houston Texans, they will be facing a challenge that is familiar to them in the sense that they see something like it every day in practice.

The Texans, much like the Packers, feature a trio of big-play threats at wide receiver in Andre Johnson, Jabar Gaffney and Corey Bradford. The Green Bay secondary will be getting a taste of what Packers' opponents face every week when they are forced to line up against Javon Walker, Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson.

Much like the Packers, the Texans receiving corps is being paced this season by a young, emerging star having a breakout season. Johnson, a second-year player from the University of Miami, ranks second in the AFC in receiving yards 752 on 51 catches, including four touchdowns.

The third overall pick in the 2003 draft has nearly matched his impressive numbers from his rookie season, which saw him make 66 grabs for 976 yards. One part of hi..

Family Weekend

When the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans meet Sunday night at Houston's Reliant Stadium, the game will be a homecoming of sorts for many on the visiting sideline.

In particular, each of the Packers' top three wide receivers, Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson, and Javon Walker, have strong ties to Houston and are expecting to have large cheering sections even if the game is in enemy territory.

Tickets have been at a premium in the Green Bay locker room this week, as all three pass-catchers who were born and raised in and around the Houston area have been trying to secure as many passes as possible for friends and family members.

"The phone's been ringing off the hook," Ferguson said. "I'm scrambling for tickets right now, I think I need like 45, but it looks like I'll get about 20."

Walker doesn't think he's going to be able to accommodate all of his ticket requests.

Linemen Preparing For Noisy New Look

As the Green Bay Packers prepare to make their first visit to Houston since 1992 for their first ever game against the Houston Texans (the trip 12 years ago was to play the Oilers, now known as the Tennessee Titans), they will be facing a lot of unknowns.

Both in the stadium that they will be playing in and the style of play of their opponent, the visiting Packers, and especially their offensive line, will find themselves in some unfamiliar territory.

Reliant Stadium, home to the Texans, is the first stadium in NFL history with a retractable roof. Whether the roof is open or closed, the building has developed a reputation in its two and a half seasons of being one of the loudest home fields in the league.

While this trip won't be the first time the Packers have encountered a noisy crowd on the road, one thing that will be something they haven't encountered for a long time is the 3-4 defensive alignment that is employed by the Texans.

Both factors ..

Man Of Steele

Before late Sunday afternoon, the name Ben Steele was largely unknown to those who are not the most ardent Green Bay Packer supporters. That was before the 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end made one of the most clutch fumble recoveries in recent Green and Gold memory.

Since claiming the loose ball that would later be kicked through the uprights for the game-winning field goal to beat the Vikings though, Steele has had an exciting few days but is ready to get back to work to help the special teams units that he has been a big part of contribute to another victory.

"It's definitely been pretty crazy with all the attention," said Steele. "The phone has been ringing off the hook with everybody really excited and it's been awesome. Definitely it was a huge play, but I just think I was lucky right there just to be in that position to fall on the ball when it was out there.
Barry, Lee Team With United Way For 6th Annual Hometown Huddle Event

As part of the 6th annual 'Hometown Huddle' event, Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Kevin Barry and defensive tackle James Lee teamed up with United Way Tuesday for a meal and quilt making activity with the winners of a school-wide essay contest from the Fort Howard/Jefferson Neighborhood Resource Center.

The Packers also presented the Center with a new PhoneMaster automated phone system, which includes hardware and a bilingual software program, to help the center with its efforts in assisting families.

During the event, several of the kids read their essays to the players and shared their ideas about why it's important to help your neighbors.

Barry also spoke to the kids about the importance of teamwork.

"Everybody has to play as one, work together and enjoy themselves," he said. "The things that you are doing, helping out with neighbors...that's going to help prepare you for later in life and for what you're going to do.

Butler: Streaking Packers Staying Hot

I know people have concerns over the fourth quarter from Sunday, but I'm going to deal with that later. First of all, I want to say what a great turnaround this has been over the last four games. After losing four straight and going to 1-4, the Packers have fought their way back to 5-4 and are in a tie for first place in the NFC North.

I can't think of any team - outside of the perhaps Pittsburgh Steelers that have won seven in a row - that is hotter than the Green Bay Packers right now. The Packers have done whatever they've had to do over this four-game stretch to get the victory, and they've done it.

You have to look at the leaders on this team, the guys like Brett Favre and Ahman Green and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila - these guys just would not let this season slip away from them. You have to give them a lot of credit.

Also, you have to give Coach Sherman a lot of credit for what he has done. He has his team focused on the big picture and that's winning t..

Letters To LeRoy Butler

Hey Leroy. That was a great job of Ben Steele to fight the ball away from the Vikings' Ross on the fumble. How often does the football change hands underneath the pile on fumbles? Also what do players say to each other when they are on the bottom of the piles? - Aaron (Brandon, SD)

What a lot of players yell when they're underneath the pile is "Green has the ball" if you're a Packer, or "White has the ball" if you're a Viking in that situation, trying to get the other team to think the officials have already determined who has the ball.

There's a lot of other stuff going on under that pile that would have to have a "Parental Advisory" warning if I were to tell you everything that happened in those piles. There's a lot of screaming, yelling, poking, punching - whatever you have to do to get the ball.

There's no telling how many times the ball changes hands in those situations, but once the referee determines who has the ball, you can get up. I had ..

Packers-Texans Matchup

PACKERS, LAUNCHING A NEW RELATIONSIP IN HOUSTON INVASION,
HAVE HAD THEIR MOMENTS IN RARE VISITS TO TEXAS METROPOLIS

Historically and collectively, the Packers have not seen much of Houston, their NFL destination this weekend.

But, in retrospect, they have found it an agreeable place to visit...thus far.

The Green and Gold made three, widely spaced trips to the Texas megalopolis while the Houston Oilers were in residence (1960-1996) and managed to come away with a victory in hand on each occasion - although all three successes were decidedly of the claw-and-scratch variety.

The Oilers, it should be noted, no longer reside in Houston, having re-located to Nashville as the Tennessee Titans for the beginning of the league's1997 season.

The Packers thus will be launching a new relationship when they take on the fledgling Houston Texans in two-year-old Reliant Stadium Sunday, their first such experience since the mid-90s when they pla..

Steady Harris Rock Of The Secondary

2004 has been a season that has seen its fair share of shake-ups in the secondary of the Green Bay Packers.

From the off-field distraction of the Mike McKenzie situation, to various injuries to various members of the defensive backfield, to working in a trio of first-year cornerbacks, not much has been steady in the Packers' back line of defense.

The one thing that everyone associated with the Packers - coaches, players, fans - could be sure of every week this season has been the reliable presence of Al Harris at the right cornerback position.

The seventh-year pro and second-year Packer has been the only member of the secondary, and just one of four Green Bay defenders, in the starting lineup for each of the team's nine games this year.

And Harris has done much more than just show up every game day. The cornerback, most famous in Titletown for his game-winning interception and touchdown return last January at Lambeau Field against the Seattle..

Henderson Delivers On His Message

"Always try to make a difference."

It's strange how six words can sound so simple, but be very difficult to live by. William Henderson believes in those words so strongly that almost every time he personalizes an autograph, he makes sure to include that message.

It's only fitting that Henderson preaches that motto, too. After all, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has lived by those words any more than the 10-year fullback has. When it comes to making a difference on or off the field, Henderson is the ultimate spokesman.

The only player on the team who has been with the Packers longer is Brett Favre and anytime you are mentioned in a category with the Hall of Fame gunslinger, it's bound to be a good thing. And Henderson has been able to do it by living each and every day according to his favorite message.

"That's really my motto, my code," Henderson said. "Whatever I do, it's always going to center on making a difference in the posi..

'Project LEAP' Returns To Lambeau Field Atrium March 5

The Green Bay Packers will once again host 'Project LEAP!' (Lambeau's Exercise and Activity Playground) on March 5, 2005, in the Lambeau Field Atrium.

The event, for children 4-and-older, is free to the public and focuses on getting kids out of the house to enjoy some non-strenuous physical activity. Inflatable units, a mini-golf course and climbing walls are planned.

"In the past few years, child obesity has become more and more of a concern," said Cathy Dworak, manager of community relations for the Packers. "We felt it was important to have an event that provided more physical opportunities as opposed to just entertainment."

'Project LEAP!' is one of four annual free community events the Green Bay Packers host in the Lambeau Field Atrium each year.

"The thing that I love about this event is that the families are having a great time together," said Bob Harlan, the Packers' president and CEO. "I think 'Project LEAP!' sends a good message for eve..

Packers' Approach Paying Big Dividends

It doesn't seem all that long ago that many considered the Packers' season all but over. With a 1-4 record after the first five games, it was only natural to feel that way.

Fortunately, the Packers never bought into that theory.

Sunday's 34-31 victory over the Vikings marked the fourth straight win for the Packers and although a 5-4 record may not seem like a great accomplishment, it does say a great deal about the changed state of the Green Bay Packers.

After all, it was only a month ago when the Packers were coming off an unfathomable start to the season. They lost three games at Lambeau Field and the preseason Super Bowl aspirations were beginning to look bleak at best.

To make matters worse, the Vikings were off to a fast start and the Super Bowl talk went out the window. After the losses, players commented that they just needed to play one game at a time and remain positive.

Slowly but surely the Packers followed that fo..

Vintage Favre Puts Packers At Top Of Division

Brett Favre has been so magical and successful in his 13 years as a Packer quarterback that it would be easy to take his greatness for granted. Yet on Sunday, he reminded the football world once again just how special he is.

The Packers' gunslinger completed 20 out of 29 passes for 236 yards and four touchdowns but that only tells half the story. More importantly, he led the Packers to a game-winning field goal just as time expired to put his team atop the NFC North Division.

Sure, at first glance those numbers are just about what you'd expect from Favre. Four touchdowns and a comeback victory is just another day at the office, right?

Well, for Favre and the Packers, Sunday was anything but that. There was too much at stake for it to be called just another game. It was equal parts dramatic and crucial, but due in large part to Favre, it turned out to be a Packers victory.

Games between the Packers and Vikings are always important just as ..

Fisher's Big Plays Help Packers Reel In Victory

In a 34-31 thriller that comes down to the final play before the winner is decided - as was the case Sunday in the Packers' win over the visiting Vikings - any number of plays can be looked at as crucial to determining which team will emerge the victors.

One play that can be looked to in the game which vaulted the Packers to the top of the NFC North division standings was a 25-yard pass from quarterback Brett Favre to third-string running back Tony Fisher with just under one minute remaining in regulation.

Two plays after taking possession just shy of midfield, Fisher ran a corner route and gained just enough separation from Minnesota safety Corey Chavous to be able to jump up to make a leaping grab at the Vikings' 30-yard line.

Three snaps later, Ryan Longwell was booting the 33-yard game-winning field goal to stretch the Packers' winning streak to four games.

Fisher, a third-year former undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame, was fairly nonchalan..

Rivalry Produces A Memorable Chapter

42-42-1.

In the 85 meetings between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings dating back to 1961, that was the record for each team in the head-to-head match-up before the latest incarnation of the border war.

After Ryan Longwell put an end to one of the most exciting games in the series' history with a 33-yard field goal as the clock showed all zeroes at Lambeau Field Sunday, the Packers emerged with a 34-31 victory and a one game historical edge.

With less than 300 miles separating the teams' home fields and their on-field hostilities renewed twice every season, Packers-Vikings has developed into one of the more spirited rivalries in all of the NFL.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman opened his post-game press conference not by extolling his players' performance (which would have definitely been warranted), but by talking about how great it is to play in rivalry games such as Sunday's and all six times every season his team lines up against an NFC..

AP Story: Favre Leads Packers Past Vikings 34-31

Shootouts usually come down to who has the ball at the end. This one came down to who had it at the bottom.

Minnesota's Derek Ross and Green Bay's Ben Steele, who had been cut by the Vikings in training camp, each claimed ownership of Robert Ferguson's fumble at midfield in the closing minutes.

The officials eventually ruled Green Bay had possession, and the Packers drove for Ryan Longwell's 33-yard field goal as time expired for a 34-31 victory, their fourth straight.

The Vikings, who had rallied to tie with two touchdowns in a 93-second span, lost their third straight and fell into a tie with the Packers atop the NFC Central at 5-4.

"There wasn't any doubt in my mind I had the ball," said Steele, whose legs were cramping and arms aching as he scuffled with his fellow backup Ross for the prized possession. "I wasn't going to give it up until the ref said, 'Eighty-two, you've got it.' There was a lot of scratching and clawing. It seemed like an..

Butler's Breakdown: Packers vs. Vikings

Well, this is the game everybody has been waiting for. Although the Minnesota Vikings may be without Randy Moss on Sunday, they are still a very formidable opponent. If you look at the things that are at stake for both teams - fighting for first place, trying to fight for a playoff spot, winning the division - a lot goes into this game.

Talking to some Minnesota people, they feel like they have a good chance because they could still get into a shootout, and they feel like their team could win that kind of game.

The Vikings bring back Onterrio Smith, who returned last week after sitting out four games because of a suspension. He's just one of four running backs that Minnesota likes to rotate and find whichever one is hot that day. Michael Bennett, a former Wisconsin Badger, is back from an earlier injury, and they are joined in the rotation by rookie Mewelde Moore and Moe Williams.

Minnesota has a big offensive line that loves to lean on you and push. H..

Packers Notebook - Shootout In The Works?

With two of the NFL's top ranked offenses on display at Lambeau Sunday (the Vikings are #1 and the Packers #4), many people are expecting to see a high-scoring shootout in the battle for first place in the NFC North.

Count quarterback Brett Favre among those who are anticipating seeing a lot of offensive fireworks throughout the game. He knows that his offense is going to have to take advantage of every chance they get their hands on the football.

"I don't know how many we have to score," Favre said. "We have to have the mentality - as I always do - that every time we get the ball, we're scoring. Playing Minnesota, Kansas City, Indy, teams like that, you really should have that mentality. To waste a drive because of a mental mistake or just dropping a ball or missing a pass, you've got to execute. If they beat you defensively - if they make a good play or a good call against yours - you deal with it.

"You can't stop yourself when you're playing a tea..

Sharper Expects To Play

Listening to safety Darren Sharper speak in the locker room after Friday's practice, there wasn't a doubt in his mind that he will be in uniform Sunday when the Green Bay Packers host the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field.

Sharper has not played since suffering a PCL sprain in his left knee October 24 in a win over the Dallas Cowboys. The injury held the two-time Pro Bowler out of the victory following week's at Washington, and last week's bye allowed him an extra week to rehab and heal.

He returned to practice Thursday and worked with the team again Friday, wearing a brace on the knee, although not necessarily by choice.

"I practiced yesterday with it and practiced today fully with it," said Sharper. "I've got to wear it if I play - have to. It's not what I want to do, but it's one of those "doctor's orders" things."

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman was less definite in assessing the Sharper's chances of returning to the lineup Sunday. He said that..

Excerpt II: Favre On The Streak

Note: The following is an excerpt from the new book, FAVRE, written by Brett Favre and his mother, Bonita Favre, with Green Bay Press-Gazette columnist Chris Havel. FAVRE is a dazzling tribute to the Packers' future Hall of Famer, with personal family photos and remembrances, stunning four-color action shots, and inspiring stories. In the following excerpt, Favre talks about his NFL-record streak of games started by a quarterback. <a href="http://www.packersproshop.com/product/sku_f80aba6f2b4e982f/0760bc4854a0a7a7/"target="new">Click here to purchase the book online at PackersProShop.com

Fortunately, I've seldom been in a situation where I didn't know if I could play because of an injury, but it has happened a couple of times. You play for as many years as I have, knock on wood, and it's inevitable.

When it does happen, the first thing people mention is The Streak. I've played in 208 straight games, counting playoffs, which is an NFL record for quarterb..

Defense Gearing Up For Sunday Test

While it appears that All-Pro receiver and notorious Packer slayer Randy Moss will not be part of the Minnesota Vikings' offensive attack this Sunday when the Packers take on their NFC North rivals at Lambeau Field, by no means does that signal to the defense of the Green and Gold that they will have an easy time.

Still at the helm of the Vikings' high-powered attack is quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who has been nothing short of spectacular through eight games this season, as he leads the NFC in nearly every passing category.

Packer defenders are aware that they will have their hands full not only the big man wearing #11, but the rest of his supporting cast as well. GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman knows that any number of Vikings could step up to have a big game, whether or not they have Moss at their disposal, including any of their four running backs.

"They have a slew of running backs back there," said Sherman. "And with the return of Mewelde Moore - he mig..

Lining Up For Action

The Minnesota Vikings will be invading Lambeau Field Sunday, and naturally the first thing that comes to mind when you look ahead to the annual meetings with the Packers' neighbors to the west is their high-powered offense.

2004's Vikings are no different, spearheaded by an aerial attack of Daunte Culpepper and his arsenal of receivers and a four-headed monster of running back options. However, with the first of their two clashes this season just days away, Packers' GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman is also concerned with a group of four men on the other side of the football.

Sherman believes that a key to the game will be the match-up between his vaunted offensive line and the front four of the Vikings' defensive line.

The emergence of Minnesota's line, which consists of tackles Chris Hovan and Mike Williams on the inside along with ends Kenny Mixon and rookie first-round draft choice Kenechi Udeze has played a big role in the defense that ranks fourth in the NF..

Second Half Strongmen

The first half of the season is in the books, and the Green Bay Packers find themselves within striking distance of the NFC North division lead with a record of 4-4, just one game behind the division-leading Minnesota Vikings. Those same Vikings happen to also be Sunday's opponent coming into Lambeau Field.

If recent history holds true to form in 2004, look for the Green and Gold to make a strong run through the final eight games, as they have become known for making a strong push to the finish line under GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman.

Since Sherman took the reins as Head Coach in 2000, the Packers have amassed a record of 23-9 (.719 winning percentage), closing the seasons with stretches of 6-2, 6-2, 5-3, and 6-2. Coincidentally, the Packers have been afforded a coveted mid-season bye week by the NFL's schedule-makers in each of those seasons, with their post-bye record an even more impressive 27-10 (.730).

Once again, Green Bay's bye week fell in the middl..

Women Learn And Have Fun At 'Football 101'

The Green Bay Packers hosted 'Football 101, an NFL Workshop for Women' Tuesday night, an interactive and entertaining evening geared for women to learn the basics of football.

The event, which was sponsored by <a href="http://www.usingers.com"target="new">Usinger's Sausage, took place in the Lambeau Field Atrium and in the Don Hutson Center. More than 240 women took part in the workshop, a vast increase over the approximately 70 participants last year.

Packers Hall of Famer Johnnie Gray led the evening's activities, which included a welcome reception, a general lecture about football, a question-and-answer session with wives of Packers players, coaches and other personnel, an exlcusive behind-the-scenes tour of Lambeau Field and a clinic and drills with Packers players at the Don Hutson Center.
Packers Take Part In National Young Readers Week

As part of National Young Readers Week, several Packers players took to the community Tuesday to read books to school children in Green Bay and the surrounding areas.

Linebacker Torrance Marshall read to the entire school at Winchester Elementary in Larsen, Wis., while running back Tony Fisher read to third graders at Denmark Elementary.

Offensive tackle Mark Tauscher, who himself holds a master's degree in educational administration and hopes to one day teach middle school history, read to children at Green Bay's Eisenhower Elementary School.

"It's just a great feeling to be able to give back," Fisher said. "I can remember growing up in Cleveland and being a Browns fan, but I never had any of the players come to my school. Just to be able to see these kids' faces light up as soon as we walk in the room really makes my day.

Chatman, Davenport Play Bingo With Residents of Good Shepherd
If you didn't know better, it may have sounded like Najeh Davenport had taken over the play calling duties for long-time Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

"Bingo!"

But rest easy Packers fans, Davenport had only assumed the role of calling out the numbers Tuesday as he and wide receiver Antonio Chatman visited residents for a night of Packers Bingo at Good Shepherd Services nursing home in Seymour, Wis.

The appearance was arranged as part of GSS's 'My Heart's Desire' program, which was created by staff members wanting to create moments of joy for the residents.

"Our whole focus at Good Shepherd is on improving the quality of life for those we serve and certainly creating moments of joy is a big part of that," said Sarah Kneisler, senior director of Good Shepherd Services.

Packers-Vikings Rivalry

PACKERS-VIKINGS RIVALRY, ONE-SIDED IN EARLY YEARS, HAS EVOLVED INTO
DEAD-EVEN STANDOFF (42-42-1), 'CHALLENGER' TO VENDETTA WITH BEARS

When their paths first crossed, there was little to suggest that the Packers' series with the Minnesota Vikings would evolve into the colorful and tautly-contested rivalry it has become - one that some loyalists insist is every bit the equal of the Green and Gold's storied vendetta with the Chicago Bears.

Nothing, certainly, in their initial encounters.

To begin with, the Packers - already on the pro football scene for more than four decades, were a talented and experienced aggregation then en route to the first of five NFL championships during the '60s, while the Vikings were a new, nondescript expansion team when they launched their on-field relationship in 1961.

So substantial was the disparity in talent in those early years - expansion teams were not stocked nearly as well then as they have been in rec..

Butler: Packers Ready For A Stretch Run

The Green Bay Packers got back to work this week and in talking to the guys, they feel rested, energized, and that an opportunity to get back into first place is right out in front of them. With a victory against Minnesota, there would be at least a two-way and potentially a three-way tie at the top of the NFC North as we roll into the home stretch.

I know everyone was disappointed with the 1-4 start, but to be in a situation where the Packers have won three straight and have a chance to tie for first place, the team's goals for 2004 are still very attainable.

I think everyone used this bye week well and it looks like the Packers are heading into the second half with a healthy team. I'm sure they not only healed up physically, but are doing well mentally as well.
Letters To LeRoy Butler

Hey LeRoy, it's great to see you still involved with the Packers! It seems Ahmad Carroll has improved rapidly the last few weeks. He went from having trouble covering Eddie Berlin to hanging tough with Laveranues Coles last week. He seems more physical and confident in his cover skills. What have you seen in his development? Thanks. - Brian (Chicago, IL)

I've seen that Ahmad is starting to learn and understand all of the different things that are part of playing defense at this level. You have a lot of audibles and different assignments that you must be prepared to perform at any time.

He's starting to understand the importance of playing both man-to-man coverage and zone coverage. Coming out of college, he predominantly played man-to-man and could rely on his athletic ability, but in the pros you have to play a combination of both. It depends on the formation and what you're trying to do as an entire defense.

I look for him to make a strong..

Packers Back To Work

After enjoying a four, and in some cases, five-day weekend during their annual bye week, Packers players returned to work Monday at Lambeau Field with a practice inside the Don Hutson Center.

Both the players and coaches were eager to get back on the field to kick off what should definitely be a very exciting second half of the season. Nearly everyone on the roster was healthy enough to participate in the afternoon workout, so the time off to heal was apparently beneficial.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Monday afternoon that safety Darren Sharper was the only Packer to be held out of the practice due to injury. Sharper, who sprained his knee in the win over Dallas two weeks ago, will be evaluated throughout the week to determine if he will be available to return to the secondary for Sunday's contest with the Minnesota Vikings.

Sherman said that it will be a day-to-day situation with the veteran defensive back, but Sharper feels that he will be able to r..

Equipment Staff Makes Sure Team Is Fit For Success

Brett Favre throws a beautiful touchdown pass to Javon Walker, Ahman Green bursts off left tackle for a long gain, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila notches another sack. Certainly there's a good chance that any of these events will take place during a Packers game, but it's unlikely many fans remember the people who make it all possible.

That's where the Green Bay Packers equipment staff comes into play.

Sure, everyone pays attention to the great players and the highlight reel plays, but what often gets lost in the shuffle is the work of the equipment staff. Without the helmets, shoulder pads, and footballs that the equipment staff provides, there would be no game.

Whether it be practice or a game, the equipment staff makes sure the Packers have everything they need to be successful. Whether it's making sure the players are always safely equipped or have the right clothing to be comfortable, the equipment staff plays a huge role in the organization.

Butler's Breakdown: A Look Back & A Look Ahead

The Green Bay Packers have put themselves right where they need to be. They're on a three-game winning streak with a bye week that will allow Brett Favre to get healthy, Darren Sharper can get healthy, and other key members of the team can heal up for the second half run to the playoffs.

If I had told you before the season that the Packers would be 4-4 after eight games, you would have been disappointed. But if you look at how this year has gone, there's only one team in the NFC that has jumped out ahead of everybody, and that's the Philadelphia Eagles. Other than them, no one has really established themselves as a team that is a lock for a playoff spot.

Following the bye week, the Packers have a date at Lambeau Field with the Minnesota Vikings, which will be a key game to shaping the NFC standings. I remember telling you guys a couple of weeks ago that these teams were starting to come back to the pack. Detroit, the Giants, St. Louis - teams that we have had c..

Fisher A Difference Maker Among Packers And Their Fans

It's understandable for NFL fans to forget about a running back that is number three on their favorite team's depth chart. It's also not out of the question to pay little attention to a player that went undrafted and had to do all he could do just to crack a roster spot.

Yet, if you asked his teammates, coaches or fans, running back Tony Fisher should be anything but a forgotten man. Fisher is many things -- versatile, dependable and smart -- but make no mistake about it, he's not forgotten.

At first glance the services of Fisher may go unnoticed by more than a few people. After all, his stat line certainly doesn't jump off the page at you and it's not as if he draws a lot of attention as a third down back and special teams performer. Simply put, Fisher often can go unrecognized on a team with stars like Brett Favre, Ahman Green and Darren Sharper.

However, Fisher may be one of the most well rounded players at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.

One For The Youngsters

Around the Packers' Lambeau Field locker room Wednesday, the mood was definitely reminiscent of the last day of school before the holiday break in December. Conversations throughout the room centered on times of flights and weekend activities back in the scattered hometowns of the Green Bay players.

With many of the veterans excused to take an early start to their bye week rest, the younger Packers had their last practice before a four-day weekend Wednesday inside the Hutson Center.

GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman was pleased with the results of the day's workout with the less experienced players, a practice that took on more of a mini-camp feel with a focus on fundamentals and drills.

"I thought we did what we had to do," Sherman said. "We had meetings this morning, had a lift, and a workout. What we did today was we were able to work with some of the younger guys on techniques and hopefully get them ready for the second half stretch."

Butler: A Win Is A Win

Before everybody jumps to conclusions and picks out all the bad stuff that happened in the game Sunday, let's talk about the good things that came out of the win in Washington. That right there - the win in Washington is really all you need, but let's go into some more details.

A win is a win. Remember back a few weeks ago when the Packers were in the midst of that four-game losing streak? All anybody wanted then was a win, and now they have delivered three in a row to get back to .500. For some reason, the fans aren't satisfied.

I think that's a good thing, because the Packers aren't satisfied at .500 either, but they know they've made some strides since they started the season at 1-4. Now the bye week is here, and they will have a chance to get healthy and make a strong run in the second half.

The Green Bay Packers came out Sunday with a lot of fire and a lot of desire. They were ready for the hunt. Offensively, the Packers had a very aggres..

Letters To LeRoy Butler

LeRoy, I was wondering why the Packers wore their home jerseys while playing Washington? I've been watching the packers for many years and either I have been oblivious to them doing this periodically or this was something new. Can you enlighten me? Thank you - Paul (Marina, CA)

In the NFL, and I think in college too, the home team chooses which jersey they will wear, and then the visiting team wears the opposite. The Redskins are one of the few teams in the NFL that choose to wear their white jerseys at home. If you've watched many Washington games over the years, you probably haven't seen them wearing red too often, except for when they play in Dallas, as the Cowboys are another team that traditionally wears white jerseys at home.

If you remember the Packers' opener this year, the Carolina Panthers were wearing white in their Monday night game, which saw the Packers donning their green jerseys on the road there too.

I've also seen times when ..

Bye Week Comes At Just The Right Time

Although the Green Bay Packers are riding high on a three-game winning streak and have evened their record at 4-4 after Sunday's win at Washington, the one common sentiment throughout Packers camp Monday that their annual bye week had come just at the right moment.

No one wanted to hear about the idea that their momentum that had gained over the past three weeks would stop. The one thing that was on everyone's mind in the Lambeau Field locker room was a few days of rest to get ready for the second half of the season.

After two days of practice coming up Tuesday and Wednesday, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman has given his players four days off at the end of the week to get away from football for a little while and prepare to make a strong run during the home stretch.

Sherman said he thinks his players will benefit more from the rest than the momentum that they may have built up.

"I know that's always an issue that you worry about momentum, but momentum'..

Exclusive Video Of Packers-Redskins Post-Game Locker Room

As the Packers left the field in Washington after their 28-14 win Sunday, both sides of the ball could be proud of the part they played in getting to the bye week with a .500 record.

Throughout the length of Green Bay's winning streak, which now stands at three games, coordinator Bob Slowik's defense has played well. Sunday was no different, with the Green and Gold turning in a solid defensive performance across the board.

From the play of the defensive line, which produced constant pressure on quarterback Mark Brunell, to the linebackers who helped to hold the Redskins to just 81 rushing yards, to the secondary providing solid pass coverage and two interceptions, their was no weak link in the Packers' chain of defense.

Now, as the Packers head into their bye week, fans can see part of the Packers-Redskins post-game locker room action thanks to the latest video to hit Packers.com.
