Letters To Lee Remmel

Dear Mr. Remmel, back in 1983, my wife and I attended a pre-season game between Green Bay and the St. Louis Cardinals. During the second half, one of the Packers place kickers missed an extra point attempt in the west end zone. The ball may have hit the left upright (facing the goal post), was deflected farther left, and bounced once off some vacant seats and right into my hands. I still have the ball. My question is, who was the placekicker for that extra point attempt? - John, West Paducah, Ky

John: The kicker on that occasion was the storied Jan Stenerud, who long since has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, thus becoming the first pure kicker ever to be so honored. The aforementioned kick was wide left, at 11:43 of the first quarter. The Packers eventually won that game (played on August 27, 1983), 39-27.

Lee, the Packers won the AFL-NFL world championship in '67 and '68. At that time it was not called the Super Bowl. It was not calle..

New Defensive Coordinator Bates Brings Aggressive Approach

"Get off the spot!" "Get off the spot!"

No matter where you stood on Ray Nitschke Field, defensive coordinator Jim Bates' voice could be heard urging his linebackers to explode off the ball during organized team activities. The defensive coordinator would follow these commands by crouching down in a two-point stance, instructing his players the proper way to bend their knees.

"He has such a passion about what he's trying to do," defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila said. "He's very hands on. Most coordinators I've had just sort of tell you what they want, but he can get down and show you exactly."

There's definitely a new sheriff in town on defense. Bates has made his presence known with a demanding style, trademarked by his active coaching technique, attention to detail and booming voice.

"That's the way I coach," Bates said. "I'm going to be after them and pat them on the back when they make plays and get after them when they don't."

He no..

Getting to Know ... Brad Bedell

How well do we know the men who make up the Packers roster? Even the most ardent fan - the one who studies every play, knows the 40-yard-dash time of every prospect, is at every practice during training camp - still most likely is familiar primarily with what the players of the Green and Gold are up to on the field.

Packers.com is taking a look at some of the off-the-field interests of the players behind the facemasks that you cheer so heartily for during the football season. This is a chance to get to know the players through a series of questions and answers, some football-related and others having nothing to do with the gridiron.

Let's get to know... Brad Bedell.

Coming off an impressive series of organized team activities (OTA) where he used his upper body strength to win a number of battles in the trenches, offensive tackle Brad Bedell looks to build on a productive 2004 season. Last season Bedell served as the primary backup to Chad Clifton at ..

NFL Europe Players Aim To Bulk Up

Following another demanding workout, Seante Williams sipped his EAS cookies and cream protein drink as he sat in front of his locker.

The defensive end has been sucking down the shakes since returning from his NFL Europe team, the Frankfurt Galaxy, three weeks ago.

Unlike most veterans who are trying to hone their bodies to last the season, the 14 Packers who recently completed NFL Europe play are trying to regain the bulk they lost.

"I'm just trying to get stronger ... get my weight back," said Williams, who tied for third in the league with five sacks.

Through lifting, ingesting protein shakes and bars and eating some good ol' American food, the six-foot-six Williams has added 10 pounds in a week-and-a-half, raising his weight from a linebacker-girth of 245 to 255. He has emphasized squats, an exercise he could rarely do in Europe, to build up his leg strength.

Punter B.J. Sander, last year's third-round draft pick, was allocated to the..

Packers Help Celebrate Third Annual Kids' Day

Christmas came early -- six months early to be exact -- for Green Bay children on Saturday.

As part of the city's third annual Kids' Day, running back Najeh Davenport and defensive tackle James Lee signed autographs and took pictures with the children aged 17 and under.

The day also included free rides at Bay Beach Amusement Park, free movies at the Meyer Theatre, free swimming at Colburn and Joannes pools, a free concert at St. James Park and free bowling at Rivera Lanes.

Green Bay mayor Jim Schmitt ate lunch with kids at Joannes Park.

Believing that children needed a day for themselves like Father's Day and Mother's Day, Schmitt used to celebrate the occasion with his family. When he took office in 2003, he implemented the holiday on a city-wide basis.

The Packers have taken part each year.
Growing up in the 1960s, I was brainwashed as a child to become a Packers fan. Some of the Packers were members of the Wisconsin National Guard at the Armory near my home. Recently, my brother flew to Hawaii to visit me after I returned from a year-long deployment to Afghanistan. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was on the same flight and my brother asked fo..

Financial Success Prepares Packers For Future

Three straight NFC North division titles. Thirteen consecutive seasons without a losing record. Two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl championship.

The Green Bay Packers over the past decade no doubt have been one of the National Football League's most successful franchises.

And for all the success the Green and Gold has had on the field, the Packers also have thrived off it.

There's the organization's position in the NFL revenue rankings -- 10th for the third consecutive year, after being 20th as recently as the 2002 fiscal year. There's the outstanding performance of the Lambeau Field Atrium businesses, which in their first full year of operation since the $295 million stadium renovation was completed, generated $5.9 million. And there's the Packers' after-tax operating profit of $25.4 million for 2005, up 10.9 percent from a year ago.
And yet for all the ways the Packers ..
In honor of Father's Day, our latest edition of 'Packers Fan Memories' celebrates the men backing the Green and Gold, including father-son bonding trips to Lambeau Field, a sit-down conversation with Packers legend Ray Nitschke and the realization of what many fathers sacrifice in order to see their children's dreams come true.

'Cruise For Cancer' A Huge Success In Second Year

In just its second year, the 'Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer' again was a huge success as several hundred bikers and Packers players and staff members hit the pavement for a worthy cause.

Parins, a motorcycle enthusiast from an early age, coordinated the first annual 'Cruise' just 16 months after being diagnosed with cancer. The 120-mile motorcycle ride raises money for various cancer-related organizations, many of which he encountered during his treatment at St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay.

On Saturday, Parins invited three cancer patients -- Dan Busse, Cody Carwardine and Kathy Miller -- to be his guests of honor.

"I was very happy that we had a safe ride -- over 100 miles," Parins said. "That was number one. The ride was about making money to help other organizations. But also what we were able to do was to make one very special day for three cancer families, with a lot of pictures and a lot of memories, and that is invaluable to Jerry Parins."

Junior Power Pack Members Get A Taste Of The NFL

For nearly 900 kids, Saturday marked the beginning of their NFL careers as several members of the Packers' kids fan club, Junior Power Pack, attended the annual Junior Power Pack Experience. The football clinic, held on one of the team's practice fields, Ray Nitschke Field, is the eighth such event in as many years for the Packers organization and has quickly become the kids club's most anticipated event.

Six Packers players -- Colin Cole, Najeh Davenport, Grady Jackson, Chris Johnson, Vonta Leach and James Lee -- along with members of Green Bay's Southwest High School football team provided hands-on instruction as the kids were put through a number of drills and taught the proper techniques of football. Members of Southwest's girl's basketball team provided kids with tape for their wrists and 'eye black' strips.

Packers Complete OTAs, Look Forward To Time Off

"Ahhhh, blisters!!!" screamed cornerback Joey Thomas as he peeled a bandage from his foot.

Thomas' wounds were a by-product of the start-and-stop action and sprinting of two weeks of organized team activities, but he can now rest his weary feet for a bit as the Packers concluded OTAs with a balmy practice session Friday morning at Ray Nitschke Field.

Packers head coach Mike Sherman praised his team's effort, performance and toughness.

"I thought they worked hard. Were they perfect? No. But I think they have a perfect understanding of what's expected out of them," he said. "They're a fun group to coach. They're hard workers. We have a lot of chemistry on our team ... I feel good about letting them go."

Sherman did let them go after a demanding Thursday practice. Instead of doing conditioning work at the end, the players ran gassers - sprinting the width of the field down and back - at the start of practice. Sherman wanted to test their mental tough..

Dodgeball Provides Break In Wednesday's OTA

When head coach Mike Sherman told the team he would execute Wednesday's organized team activity a little differently, fullback William Henderson figured he would implement new formations or that cloudy conditions would force the team inside to the Don Hutson Center.

Henderson never thought he would play a sport he has not played since his youth --dodgeball.

"I had no idea," he said of the post-practice dodgeball tournament held inside the gym at Lambeau Field. "This was a great changeup though."

Eight veterans, Henderson, Al Harris, Rob Davis, Mike Flanagan, Grady Jackson, Ahman Green, Ryan Longwell and Donald Driver were anointed captains. Each team included nine players and two coaches. Henderson selected running back Walt Williams as the first choice overall.

Among the coaches, defensive coordinator Jim Bates drew a lot of accolades.

Packers Rank Fifth In League Merchandise

Whether it's a cheesehead, a Brett Favre jersey or a mini-helmet, Green Bay Packers' merchandise remains very popular.

The Packers ranked fifth in NFL merchandise sales during the 2004 season, their ninth consecutive appearance in the top five. Favre's No. 4 jersey ranked sixteenth overall.

The NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles led all teams in sales followed by the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders.

Wide receiver Randy Moss, traded during the offseason from the Minnesota Vikings to the Raiders, had the top selling jersey. Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger placed second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Last year, the Green Bay Packers finished third in merchandise, while the Raiders ranked first.

Dendy, Young Secondary Shine During OTA

A quick and aggressive secondary stole the show during Tuesday's organized team activity at Ray Nitschke Field.

"We may have gotten the upper hand," cornerback Al Harris said. "Today was a pretty good day."

Jim Bates' new defensive scheme calls for the cornerbacks to be physical, especially at the point of attack, by getting their hands on receivers to slow them down.

"That's the main thing the coaches are stressing for us now," cornerback Patrick Dendy said.

Tuesday's most exciting play occurred when Harris intercepted a Craig Nall pass intended for wide receiver Antonio Chatman and took it to the house.

"Oh, that would have been a touchdown," he proclaimed.

Harris also forced an incomplete pass from Nall, but he was not the only defensive back to impress the coaches.

Indeed undrafted rookie free agent Dendy has greatly enhanced his chances of making the roster. In a competitive two-minute drill, Dendy broke up two J...

Cancer Survivors Celebrate At Lambeau Field

More than 800 cancer survivors spent Tuesday afternoon at Lambeau Field as part of Cancer Survivors' day.

As part of the celebration sponsored by the Green Bay Packers, Philip & Elizabeth Hendrickson Foundation, K.C. Stock Foundation, and St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center, Packers President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Harlan spoke to those in attendance.

Harlan was diagnosed with melanoma behind his right ear and on the back of his shoulder two years ago.

"I'm honored to be with you today," he said. "I wish you great health."

Harlan said he developed cancer in part because of his exposure to the sun. In the 1950s and 60s, few knew the risks of skin cancer and took less precaution. Harlan spent much of his time golfing and caddying under the sun often without a shirt. Now he says he wears a large-brimmed hat.

"I look like I'm going into the jungle looking for elephants," he quipped.

Murphy Making The Most Of Opportunities

With Pro Bowl wide receiver Javon Walker absent for this week's organized team activities, rookie Terrence Murphy is making the most out of his increased repetitions.

"He's done a nice job," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He's made some plays out there. He's ahead of where I thought he'd be."

The 196-pounder, a second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M, could have the size and speed to develop into something special.

"I think I'm the complete receiver," Murphy said. "I can go deep and I like to block."

He has also displayed a soft set of hands. During the red zone segment of Monday's OTAs, he positioned his body to make a nifty catch against cornerback Joey Thomas.

"It's been fun watching him progress," said quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "He's a hard worker. He's diligent and he's not made any mental mistakes."

Murphy has developed a rapport with Rodgers, another potential-packed rookie.

"'T-Murph' is my sidekick," Rogers sa..

Packers Resume Organized Team Activities

Although the Packers offense ranked third in the NFL last year, the defense stole the show during Monday's organized team activities at Ray Nitschke Field.

With quarterback Brett Favre absent from the OTA, the young quarterbacks must learn on the job and threw several interceptions.

"We're throwing a ton at them," head coach Mike Sherman said. "You have to understand, everything Brett knows, they have to know. These guys are getting thrown the book, Football 404. It's a little heavy and takes a while to absorb."

By the end of the week, Sherman said the Packers will have installed 80 to 85 percent of the offense.

About 200 fans looked on as the defense made several key plays, including cornerback Joey Thomas' interception off quarterback Craig Nall during a red zone drill. Thomas and also tipped a pass intended for Donald Driver, which rookie cornerback Leigh Torrence picked off.

On a pass intended for Driver, cornerback Patrick Denby, a..

Green, Several Players Raise Money For Easter Seals

Ahman Green and several teammates, other NFL players and assorted celebrities came together in Las Vegas last month and raised more than $100,000 for Easter Seals.

Having planned the event for nearly a year, Green recruited several of his peers and friends, more than 100 participants in all, to his first annual Ahman Green Shootout for Easter Seals. The golf tournament, hosted by the TPC at the Canyons, drew many of Green's current and former teammates, including Nick Barnett, Kevin Barry, Brad Bedell, Brennan Curtin, Donald Driver, William Henderson, Grey Ruegamer, Mark Tauscher and Mike Wahle.

"This event was a tremendous first step in expanding the services Easter Seals offers here in the Las Vegas market," said Brian Patchett, president and CEO of Easter Seals Southern Nevada. "Currently, there are 4,000 children unable to receive treatment through state programs, and Easter Seals will be there to meet this need in the community. We are very grateful for Ahman's..

Favre Eager To Return To Gridiron

Having rested his mind and his body, QB Brett Favre is eager - perhaps more so than ever - to play football as the 2005 season approaches.

"He's really excited about coming back," Deanna Favre said following the couple's annual charity softball game in Appleton, Wis., Sunday. "He's more excited this year than probably in the last two or three."

That enthusiasm can be seen in how intently the 35-year-old quarterback has followed the NFL this offseason.

"She's probably referring to me watching NFL Network every day, which I haven't done." Brett joked.

He also vehemently agreed with Head Coach Mike Sherman's decision to have him stay home during minicamps.

"Mike has done the right thing," he said. "I've missed the guys, and missed being around, but that's the whole premise of doing this - to come into training camp ready to go because you can get burned out."

Deanna expressed the same notion...

Offense Tops Defense In Sixth Annual Brett Favre Celebrity Softball Game

The Sixth Annual Brett Favre Celebrity Softball Game provided the Packers with a fun respite from the tedium of drills and technique work of the organized team activities as the Packers' offense defeated the Packers' defense 22-5.

"It's a nice break," WR Robert Ferguson said. "It's nice to get acclimated with the new guys."

A Favre softball game-record 8,505 fans, many of whom arrived hours before the game and tailgated in the parking lot, attended the event. Proceeds of the ticket sales went toward the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation.

The foundation provides aid to disadvantaged children residing in Wisconsin and Mississippi. Brett's wife, Deanna, estimated the contribution to be from $100,000 to $150,000.

"We expect it, though, from Green Bay," she said, describing the support for the cause. "It's incredible."

Deanna joined Brett on the winning offensive squad while their oldest daughter, Brittany, played for the defense during Sunday's..

Several Green Bay Packers Friday traded in their cleats for fashionable bowling shoes as they took to Riviera Lanes to bowl for fun and raise money for The Angel Fund for Children with Cancer, Inc. during the Edgar Bennett Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon.

The Angel Fund is dedicated to giving financial and social support to families residing in Brown County whose children are receiving treatment for cancer or bone marrow failure.

The event, which featured Bennett, a former Packers running back and now the team's running backs coach, along with other current Packers players, coaches and staff, raised $32,000 for The Angel Fund. It is the second such event for Bennett, who hosted a similar outing in 2003.

Bennett and the Packers thank Kraft Foods and Quality Inspection Center, the major sponsors of the event. Brunswick celebrity bowling balls were donated by Bobs' Business and the Brunswick Corporation, while JanSport provided the embroid..

Packers Continue Organized Team Activities

The Green Bay Packers' June session of organized team activities continued into its second day Thursday as the team returned to Ray Nitschke Field before a crowd of over 200 fans.

Brett Favre, in town for the Sixth Annual Brett Favre Celebrity Softball Game, made an appearance towards the end of practice, reuniting with teammates and coaches for the first time since the end of last season.

"It's always good to see Brett," said offensive coordinator Tom Rossley. "He picks the place up a little bit and it gives us a bit of juice whenever you turn around and see him there."

Favre, at head coach Mike Sherman's request, had been working out with a trainer in Mississippi instead of attending the Packers' April and June workout sessions.

"That's what I wanted to check (when I lifted his shirt)," Rossley said, when asked if Favre looked 'lean and mean.' "He may have a little bit further to go before I start call..

Packers Open Second Round Of Organized Team Activities

Nearly 200 fans lined the fences at Ray Nitschke Field, Wednesday, as the Packers took practice outdoors for the first time this year.

Head coach Mike Sherman was pleased with the overall performance of his team on their first day back, but also saw room for improvement as the Packers opened the second round of voluntary organized team activities.

"We were a little sloppy with some things," Sherman said. "We jumped offsides a couple of times and I didn't like that. I know it was the first practice, but like I told them, the more pressure we put on ourselves now to perform at a high level, the easier the season is going to be.

"We're trying to coach to perfection out here and they're trying to play at that level. I thought they tried hard, gave good effort and we'll just keep getting better with the course of the week."

While Sherman again asked quarterback Brett Favre to continue his personal workouts at his home in Mississippi during the OTAs..
