Titans Game To Help Determine Opening Day Starters

Several Green Bay Packers will use Thursday night's game against the Tennessee Titans to improve their chances of securing a roster spot or landing a starting position.

"This last game is always critical," general manager Ted Thompson said. "We're closer to the season, and people have a shorter memory and they remember what you've done lately."

The Packers have not yet announced their starting guards. During Wednesday's walk-through practice, Scott Wells started the majority of time at left guard while William Whitticker started at right guard.

Wells and Adrian Klemm will rotate at left guard from series to series during the first half. In the second half, Klemm will start the third quarter and Wells the fourth.

"It's an opportunity to show I can play my position. That's the way I'm approaching it," Wells said. "It's important not to put the stress of battling for a starting position in my mind."
Running back Ahman Green has locked up the ..

Packers Worry About Loved Ones In Gulf Coast

While Brett Favre received word that his immediate family lived through Hurricane Katrina, other Packers players hoped for the same news.

"Fortunately, they all survived," Favre said.

Javon Walker, however, cannot locate his grandparents or two of his uncles -- Lucille, Paul Jr., Paul Sr., and Earl Goldsmith of Moss Point, Miss.

At first Walker's mother did not want to worry him, but she became increasingly anxious after not being able to contact them for two days.

"They panicked a little bit," Walker said.

Favre received the news from his mother, Bonita, after she stopped a Houston news van. Someone with the news station phoned the Packers to inform Favre of his family's s..

Training Camp Notebook: Healthy Thurman Seeks Titan-ic Performance

Thumbs Up
Wide receiver Andrae Thurman knows he needs to perform well against the Tennessee Titans to improve his chances of making the roster.

"I know the situation I'm in," he said. "It's hard not to press, but I'm just going to make sure and let the game come to me."

The Packers carried only four wide receivers on their active roster in 2004. Javon Walker and Donald Driver definitely will make the roster. Rookie Terrence Murphy (knee) and Antonio Chatman (neck) have looked impressive during organized team activities and training camp, but injuries will sideline them against the Titans, and Thurman will have ample opportunity to showcase his skills.

Thurman has played well too, especially considering a broken thumb which has hindered his pass catching abilities. He broke it while losing a ball in the sun during drills with a JUGS machine. The football landed squarely on his thumb.
Favre Practices With Heavy Heart

****************

Brett Favre loves football, but playing that game became arduous this week. With Hurricane Katrina ravaging his hometown, he has focused on his family.

"Today was very difficult to practice," Favre said. "I'm sort of going through the motions out there. ... I'm trying my best."

In what he calls as difficult a distraction as he has endured during his NFL career, the 15-year-veteran quarterback has barely slept the last couple of days. He tries to watch as much news coverage as possible. Head Coach Mike Sherman approached him during practice to see how he was doing.

"Our heart goes out to them," Sherman said afterwards.

Training Camp Notebook: Versatile Ruegamer Could Start

Jack Of All Trades
The Packers coaching staff continued to rotate players at the starting guard positions even after Sunday's release of Matt O'Dwyer seemed to pave the way for rookie William Whitticker.

Monday's practice began with Adrian Klemm starting at left guard and Grey Ruegamer starting at right guard. Whitticker played on the first team during team drills later in the day.

Ruegamer played guard during the outset of camp but returned to center while the team used center/guard Scott Wells at left guard before the Buffalo Bills game on Aug. 20.

Ruegamer played center against the Patriots but took repetitions at guard with the second team on Sunday.

"It's been a yo-yo type of camp -- in and out and in and out," he said. "It's kind of frustrating being moved from position to position, but it's kind of the cards you're dealt. You've got to play your hand."

Ruegamer can play left guard, right guard or center. He replaced inju..

Hurricane Threatens Safety Of Packers' Family Members

Several Packers expressed concern about family and friends living in the southeastern portion of the United States ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Linebacker Ray Thompson, who spends his offseason in New Orleans, just wants to contact his immediate family. He could not reach his mother, grandmother, aunts and uncles on their cell phones.

"I'm just waiting to hear their voice," he said. "I'm just praying for the best."

The storm came ashore Monday morning just east of New Orleans. Winds topping 140 mph destroyed street signs, tree branches and roof debris and countless other objects.

Thompson's brother and two of his cousins left the city, but a trip to Texas took nine hours because of traffic congestion.

Many of Javon Walker's friends also traveled to Texas. Walker attended St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette, La.

"They got out of there," he said. "Hopefully they made it out of there safe."

Training Camp Notebook: Jackson, Hunt Eye Return To Practice

Added Beef
Sherman expects defensive tackles Cletidus Hunt and Grady Jackson to practice with the team on Monday.

The tackles weigh a combined 655 pounds, and their presence should help shore up a defensive front that allowed 155 rushing yards to the Patriots.

"We'll ease them in as fast as we possibly can," head coach Mike Sherman said.

The key word is "ease." Jackson (knee) has missed all of training camp while Hunt (knees/shoulder) has not played in any of the preseason games. They likely will not go full bore because participating in all drills could risk aggravating their injuries.

"Throwing them out there after waiting so long would be foolhardy on our part," Sherman said.

The players have remained active during practice.

For the first 15 minutes of Sunday's session, defensive coordinator Jim Bates worked one-on-one with defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt.

Resilient Whitticker Shakes Off Bad Game

William Whitticker had trouble swallowing the Packers' 27-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

He also had trouble swallowing food. Whitticker lost a couple of pounds on Friday night.

He couldn't eat. He couldn't sleep, and he didn't want to talk to anyone.

"It was a long night on Friday," he said.

Whitticker had problems with his footwork, pass blocking and run blocking against the Patriots. He called his performance one of the worst of his career.

"He struggled a little bit," offensive line coach Larry Beightol said, "He'll learn from that."

Whitticker's struggles contributed to the offensive line's woes. They allowed three sacks and created few creases for a running game that averaged 3.3 yards.

However, the 6-5, 338 rookie guard has reasons to keep his head up. His poor performance occurred during a preseason game that has no bearing on the regular season record. Plus he started at right guard during Sunday's practice..

Packers Dodge Several Injury Bullets In Defeat to Patriots

Teams set several goals for the grind of an NFL preseason, but perhaps none is more important than the objective of making sure everyone is healthy when the regular season rolls around.

On the surface, the Packers 27-3 loss to the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots would appear devastating. However, the only game that counts at this point happens to be when the Packers travel to Detroit on September 11. And for Green Bay's sake, they can at least be thankful that they dodged more than one scare in the injury department against the Pats.

It's no secret that Green Bay relies heavily on its passing attack, but that game plan may have changed had the injuries to wide receivers Javon Walker and Antonio Chatman been more serious Friday night.

Faced with a third and 15 from their own 37-yard line, quarterback Brett Favre attempted to make something out of nothing as he so often does. This time, however, the gunslinger made an errant throw tha..

Notebook: Changing Of The Guard

Will The Real Guards Please Stand Up?
Going into Friday's game versus the Patriots, the Packers coaching staff had yet to decide who would be the starting guards on the offensive line.

Free agent pickup Adrian Klemm and rookie William Whitticker have been seeing the most action with the starting lineup, but Scott Wells, Grey Ruegamer and Matt O'Dwyer are also in the mix.

With only one preseason game left, the Packers know that a decision must be made soon because of chemistry issues along the line. Once they settle on the starters, the unit can then get used to working together and gelling together. Which way the Packers are leaning isn't certain yet, but once again, Klemm and Whitticker were given the most reps Friday night.

According to Head Coach Mike Sherman, "the protection wasn't all that bad with the first group," but he knows that the game tape will tell the true story.

"I have to look at the tape tonight and get a better se..

Rodgers Struggles But Displays Potential

Rookie Aaron Rodgers may not have led the team to any points, but he responded with his best preseason performance and perhaps secured the No. 2 quarterback position during the Packers' 27-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Friday night.

"I felt pretty comfortable out there, and I thought I made some pretty good reads," Rodgers said. "We moved the ball pretty well. Some penalties put us in some tough situations."

After completing only six-of-15 passes for 28 yards and an interception through two preseason games, Rodgers answered with a 5-of-9, 52-yard performance.

The first round draft pick started the second half and played until J.T. O'Sullivan entered the game with 4:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brett Favre played the first half, and Craig Nall did not take any snaps.

Friday's highlight came on his turnback route to Ahman Green. Rodgers' pass converted a third-and-six play late with 9:16 left in the third quarter.

Defending Champs, Sloppy Play Hurt Packers

If you relish acrobatic catches, beautiful play from the pocket and sunny weather, you would not have enjoyed watching the New England Patriots defeat the Green Bay Packers 27-3 in front of 69,501 fans on Friday night.

"Any time you turn the ball over four times," head coach Mike Sherman said. "You're going to look ugly."

Ugly is an apt description for a night that featured two interceptions from Brett Favre, an interception from Aaron Rodgers, an Ahman Green fumble, eight first half penalties and a downpour that drenched the field in the second half.

"We were somewhat tentative and made too many mental mistakes," fullback William Henderson said. "When you get a chance to play against the best, you go out there and you represent yourself to your best ability, and I know we didn't do that tonight."
The Packers repeated much of the same special teams miscues from last week's game versus the Buffalo Bills. Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs set the tone..

AP Story: Patriots Beat Packers 27-3

Tom Brady and Corey Dillon heeded their coach's advice to treat New England's trip to Green Bay just like a regular-season game.

Brady guided the Patriots on five scoring drives, even though only one of them was longer than 41 yards, and Dillon ran for two touchdowns in a 27-3 rout of the Packers on a rainy Friday night.

New England coach Bill Belichick had warned his players to view their first trip to Lambeau Field in eight years as more than a mere exhibition, and you can bet the Packers are glad this one didn't count.

They had a forgettable first half that included numerous breakdowns on special teams and eight accepted penalties. Brett Favre threw two interceptions - a third was wiped out by a flag - and he lost receivers Javon Walker (finger) and Antonio Chatman (neck) on the same series.

"We seem to be in tough situations more times that we should be," Packers coach Mike Sherman lamented at halftime. "But certainly the special teams didn..
Your first time at Lambeau Field... The first time you met a Packers legend... Your favorite piece of Packers memorabilia...Your family's pre-game tailgating ritual. You name it. We want to hear about it in 'Fan Memories' as Packers fans tell us about some of their most memorable moments backing the Green and Gold.

I had the pleasure of taking my seven-year-old son Jacob to his first Packers game on August 11, 2005. The look on his face when his favorite player (Brett Favre) and the rest of the Parkers took the field was worth a million dollars. Even though it was raining, he stuck it out to the very end and w..

Training Camp Notebook: Healthy Ferguson Raring To Go

Ferguson Feeling Fine
After missing two consecutive days of practice with a heart murmur, wide receiver Robert Ferguson participated in Thursday's walk-through and will play against the New England Patriots on Friday.

"We handled it accordingly and took all the tests and everything is fine," Ferguson said.

Ferguson first experienced flutters in chest during high school.

"It's something I've been dealing with all my life," he said.

The No. 3 wide receiver only feels the palpitations while at rest -- not during games.

"As long as I'm out here playing and being active, I'm fine," Ferguson said. "It's never happened when I've been exercising."

**

Bubba's Back
While his teammates ran through plays on Thursday at half speed, tight end Bubba Franks went full tilt.

"I kind of took this as a mini-practice," Franks said. "Everyone else is kind of walking through, and I'm out there running routes."

Rodgers To Receive His Chances Against The Champs

Aaron Rodgers will continue his battle with Craig Nall and J.T. O'Sullivan for the No. 2 quarterback position by taking the snaps after Brett Favre on Friday night versus the New England Patriots.

"He just needs as many reps as he can get," quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell said.

J.T. O'Sullivan will finish the game as quarterback. Similar to the distribution of playing time versus the Chargers, Nall will take little to no snaps at quarterback.

The Packers have observed Nall's performance for three years but need to evaluate O'Sullivan because the team likely will carry three quarterbacks on the roster.

Rodgers' impressive performances during training camp practices have not been reflected in live game action. He has mastered the Packers' offense but needs to focus on adjusting his decision making to the defense.

"He's kind of gotten caught up in what we're doing," Bevell said. "He knows where our guys are going. He knows how to function w..

Franks To Join Teammates And End Lonely Summer

While his Packers teammates practiced, tight end Bubba Franks spent the last several months working out at the University of Miami (Fla.) with fellow alumni including Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee, Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James and Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed.

But then they left for training camp. And then the school's strength coaches left.

"It kind of makes you feel lonely," Franks said.

He can now soak in the camaraderie of the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to a multi-year contract with the team on Wednesday night. The deal could ensure the tight end finishes his career with the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2000 draft.

"I didn't want to be one of those players who bounce from team to team, changing jersey colors, jersey numbers." he said. "I started here, and I want to finish here. Now I want to win here."

After missing almost all of training camp, the newly-signed tight end will..

Training Camp Notebook: Thomas Has 'Eyes On The Prize'

Thomas Can Still Become The Starter
Cornerback Joey Thomas participated in all drills during practice for the first time since he returned from calf and hip injuries. He yearns to make up for the lost time.

"I'm anxious," he said.

Cornerbacks Ahmad Carroll and Al Harris took the repetitions with the starting unit, but Thomas broke up several passes during the last two days of camp and will not settle for assuming the nickel cornerback position.

"I've got my eyes on the prize," he said.

Sherman said both Carroll and Thomas will see extensive time during the regular season, and the competition for the starting left cornerback remains open.

"We can't close our eyes to anybody," Sherman said. "I look at it as great competition. We have talented players there, and the best man will win the start. They're both going to play quite a bit in our dime package."

Thomas said his most difficult challenge is honing the fundamentals o..

Fearsome Foursome

The Green Bay Packers will select their starting guards among a deep pool of candidates.

"I think there are four solid guys there," offensive line coach Larry Beightol said. "They're all good workers. They're all physical enough. They're all talented enough."

During Wednesday's practice, four players took turns with the first team. Matt O'Dwyer started at right guard and Adrian Klemm started at left guard before giving way to William Whitticker and Scott Wells at those respective positions.

Beightol announced his deadline for determining the starters as opening day of the regular season on Sept. 11.

The offensive line coach will provide suggestions, but head coach Mike Sherman will make the final call on the starters. Having served as an offensive line coach at Tulane University, The College of the Holy Cross, Texas A&M University, UCLA and the Packers, Sherman has extensive experience evaluating that unit.

Sherman To Coach Through 2007 Season

Curly Lambeau. Vince Lombardi.

Only those two coaching greats will have longer tenures as head coach of the Green Bay Packers than Mike Sherman.

The Packers signed Executive Vice President and Head Coach Mike Sherman to a two-year contract through the 2007 season on Tuesday.

"The Packers are very pleased to have him as our head coach," Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson said.

The contract will take him through his seventh year as the Packers leader. Sherman, the Packers' 13th head coach, has led the franchise to three consecutive NFC North titles.

Quarterback Brett Favre, the undisputed leader of team, enthusiastically endorsed the decision to extend his contract.

"He's done a great job. He has the respect of the players," he said. "It's overdue."

Thompson deliberated, taking his time in making a decision integral to the future of team. He did not preoccupy himself..

Training Camp Notebook: Favre Credits Offseason Conditioning

The Workouts Pay Off
Brett Favre spent the offseason strengthening his core muscles and improving his fitness to become more elusive in and out of the pocket. His workouts have left him resembling the young, mobile quarterback of years ago.

He scrambled away from Buffalo Bills linebacker Jeff Posey to deliver a 12-yard touchdown pass to running back Ahman Green during Saturday's preseason game.

"It's just one play," Favre said, "but I don't know if I would've made that play last year or the year before."

During the last few weeks of training camps, the fitter Favre has looked as sharp as ever. He has completed 13-of-16 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, earning a preseason quarterback rating of 140.6.

Grady Nears Return To Action
The extra rest has helped 32-year-old defensive tackle Grady Jackson and his achy knees.

"I feel a whole lot better," Jackson said. "My body's not as beat up."

Training Camp Notebook: Packers Welcome Back Al Harris

Shutdown Al
After missing the Buffalo Bills game with a quadriceps injury, the Green Bay Packers' premier shutdown corner, Al Harris, returned to practice on Monday.

"Al Harris had a great practice," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He looked like Al."

His best play of the afternoon occurred when he slapped away a Brett Favre pass intended for Antonio Chatman. After Harris forced the incompletion, defensive coordinator Jim Bates gave him a high five.

"I'm making huge strides," he said. "There's a great chance I'll be out there for Detroit. Anything earlier would be bonus."

Earl Little Enters Starting Safety Competition

Earl Little may have returned to second-string strong safety during Monday's practice, but he took advantage of the opportunity Saturday night when he replaced the injured Mark Roman as the starter versus the Buffalo Bills.

"He's still in competition," secondary/safeties coach Joe Baker said. "And he's made it very interesting."

Little racked up four tackles against the Bills. He drilled Bills wide receiver Eric Moulds to force a first quarter incompletion. The veteran wisely stayed at home while the Bills attempted a flea flicker between McGahee and Losman and broke up the pass intended for wide receiver Josh Reed.

He leveled Sam Breeden with his shoulder during Monday's practice.

"I've been playing consistently in the scrimmage and against San Diego and against the Bills," Little said. "What more can I do?"

Little finished Thursday' practice as the starter once Roman left practice ice his hamstring.

Favre Continues Hot Streak, Special Teams Falter

Brett Favre led the Packers down the field for a touchdown on their first drive of Saturday night's preseason game versus the Buffalo Bills.

For the Green Bay Packers, it went downhill from there.

The Bills scored 27 unanswered points to win the game 27-7. Their scores came on touchdowns by J.P. Losman, Willis McGahee and Lionel Gates and two Rian Lindell field goals.

Poor special teams' play hurt the Packers and led to two Bills touchdowns.

"It was terrible," head coach Mike Sherman said. "We put our defense in a very difficult situation. We gave (Buffalo) the ball in the red zone twice -- we can't do that."

After Favre's touchdown pass, running back ReShard Lee returned the kickoff 69 yards to the Green Bay 27-yard-line, which set up a J.P. Losman one-yard touchdown. On the play, Losman ran a bootleg before pump faking Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman on his way to the end zone.

AP Story: Bills Topple Packers 27-7

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (Aug. 20, 2005) -- Happy with leading the Buffalo Bills to a preseason victory, quarterback J.P. Losman acknowledged there's still a few things he needs to learn.

One's sliding to the turf to avoid getting hit. Another is how to celebrate a touchdown.

The first-year starter appeared a little lost, not knowing what to do after his 1-yard scamper into the end zone opened Buffalo's scoring in a 27-7 win over Green Bay Aug. 20.

"I was like, 'Should I celebrate, should I not, should I wait for the regular season?'" said Losman, who simply stood in the end zone holding the ball before his teammates arrived to celebrate. "But it was a great feeling to get that first one out of the way."

It happened on the Bills' first series in front of a sellout house and in Losman's home debut since the 2004 first-round draft pick replaced Drew Bledsoe in February.

Losman followed the touchdown by engineering scoring drives on Buffalo's ..

Packers Brace For The Blitz Of The Bills

Crowd noise pumped through the speakers at the Don Hutson Center during Friday's walk-through practice to simulate the Buffalo Bills' raucous Ralph Wilson Stadium, while the Green Bay Packers' work during this week's practice prepared them for facing the Bills defense on Saturday.

After the Bills sacked Packers quarterbacks eight times during the "Family Night" scrimmage, the Packers offense has emphasized pass protecting against blitz schemes during the week.

"We're a pretty good blitz team. We take pride in that," offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said. "We'll be much more prepared."

The Packers did not prepare a scouting report for "Family Night" because it was only a scrimmage. In practice they had faced a Packers defense that usually rushed only their front four.

"(The Bills) kind of caught us off guard -- especially our young guys," Rossley said.

The Bills likely will blitz on more than 60 percent of their plays, and quarterbacks Bre..

Training Camp Notebook: Like A Fine Wine ...

Favre Watch
Donald Driver likely will have a bruise after trying to haul in a Brett Favre pass with his chest instead of his hands on Thursday morning.

"He tried to kill me," he said. "I was trying to figure out how to catch it."

Favre's 9-of-10, 91-yard passing performance against the San Diego Chargers may have been the sign of things to come. He has looked crisp during training camp -- even by his Pro Bowl standards.

"He's been very sharp -- great decision making, accuracy, arm, everything," Sherman said.

Favre shredded the defense during 7-on-7 and 9-on-7 drills. He hit Robert Ferguson, Javon Walker and Ben Steele for touchdowns. The Walker pass traveled 40 yards while Favre placed the ball between linebacker Hannibal Navies and safety Earl Little to reach Steele.

"He's not afraid to rifle it in there - that's for sure," Steele said. "He fired one in there the other day that I kind of caught on the side of his helmet. He p..

Training Camp Notebook: Chatman Develops Into Offensive Weapon

More Than Special
When Antonio Chatman first arrived in Green Bay after a career in the Arena League, he focused only on his special teams abilities.

"That was the only way he approached the game. He cared nothing about being a receiver," quarterback Brett Favre said. "I was ready to ship him out of here."

Chatman then reversed field like any elusive punt returner. Now he works hard at both special teams and offense.

"He's really improved as a receiver," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He's done a nice job for us."

Last year Chatman started his first two NFL games and became the No. 3 wide receiver when Robert Ferguson went down with an injury on Dec. 19. He caught 22 balls for 246 yards and a touchdown. During the 2005 training camp, he has caught nearly everything as the No. 4 receiver.

He became a student of the game. Favre even tests him, asking him to identify the safety's coverage whenever he returns to the huddle.

All 'Four' One: Packers' Receivers Stand Out

On Tuesday night, wide receivers coach James Franklin commanded his receivers to set the tone for practice. He directed the veteran foursome of Donald Driver, Javon Walker, Robert Ferguson and Antonio Chatman to make plays.

Message received.

During Wednesday's fourth quarter drill, the Packers first team took the ball, trailing 24-14 with just over six minutes to play. Quarterback Brett Favre threw two touchdowns, an eight yard pass to Walker and a laser to Driver, who beat Chris Johnson for the second score.

The Packers' first team offense won that drill, and the wide receivers dominated Wednesday's practice.

"We've got four wide receivers that are the best in the division and the best in the league. We'll go against any corners," Driver said.

"We" is the key word. The Packers have a strong running game and only one football to spread around, but each wide receiver knows they will contribute.

Walker and Driver combined for 173 ca..

Training Camp Notebook: Bates Mulls Pass Rushing Options

To Blitz Or Not Too Blitz
Defensive coordinator Jim Bates will send as many pass rushers as it takes to hurry the quarterback.

"If you're getting there with four, you bring four," he said. "If you're not getting there with four, you bring five. If you're not getting there, you bring six or seven"

Bates can employ a prison break strategy or leave the extra men in coverage.

As Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator, Bates rarely blitzed because his defenses excelled on third down and featured one of the game's best pass rushers in Jason Taylor. Plus an offense can burn a blitzing defense with quick scores, and his Miami teams did not have the offense to match.

During his stints in 1984 to 1985 with the USFL's San Antonio Gunslingers and in 1989 to 1990 with the University of Florida, he blitzed regularly.

Bates took a similar gamble against the San Diego Chargers, and it backfired. A blitz set up one-on-one coverage in the secondary..

Favre And Wolf Share Special Bond

While former Packers general manager Ron Wolf meandered the sideline during Tuesday's practice, quarterback Brett Favre began to reflect on how that man changed his life.

"I've always felt indebted to him for obvious reasons," he said. "He took a big gamble."

When Wolf took over the Packers, he traded a 1992 first round draft pick (17th overall) to the Atlanta Falcons for a player who weighed 250 pounds, had a few too many beers and a serious case of naivete. He practiced hard but went harder at night.

"I couldn't figure out the whole season why I never got a chance to play," Favre said.

Wolf fancied him for the rocket arm he displayed at the University of Southern Mississippi rather than his body of work with the Falcons.

His 1991 statistics with the Falcons include two games played, 0-for-4 on passing attempts and two interceptions -- numbers hardly indicative of the man who has led the NFL in yardage twice.

Asked what made Favr..

Training Camp Notebook: Manning Masters Multiple Positions

Versatile Rookie
One of the surprises of camp, Roy Manning, took snaps with the first unit at weakside linebacker during practice. The undrafted free agent's performance continues to push for more playing time.

"Manning is a making a move," Bates said.

The coaching staff plans to take an extensive look at him versus the Buffalo Bills during Saturday's preseason game. His speed and change-of-direction ability have impressed them during camp.

"He's been pretty steady since he's been here," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He's a bright kid. He responds well to coaching."

Manning, a middle linebacker during most of camp, started at outside linebacker in the spot vacated by Na'il Diggs. Such a position change could throw off most rookies, but for Manning it's a return to his comfort zone. He played outside linebacker at the University of Michigan.

"It's easy for me," he said. "It's the same basic principle [as college]. So I don't thi..

Ferguson Rebounds From 2004 Injury, Vows To Make Impact In 2005

Wide receiver Robert Ferguson does not remember the hit. He has never gone back to watch the tape. He does not even want to talk about it.

On Dec. 19, 2004, he caught a 31-yard pass near midfield when Jacksonville Jaguars safety Donovin Darius clotheslined him with his forearm. The NFL fined Darius $75,000. Ferugson sustained head and neck injuries and was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Wis. The vicious tackle nearly paralyzed him, and he stayed in the hospital for three days.

"It's over with," Ferguson said. "It's ancient history."

Indeed Ferguson has turned over a new leaf. He trained harder than ever for the 2005 season. Lasik surgery improved his vision to 20-15. Stronger than ever, he benches 415 pounds and has six percent body fat.

"I'm real anxious right now," he said. "I want to see how I compare to the rest of the receivers in the league."

And he has set lofty goals for this season.

Packers Launch Second Annual 'Summer Traditions'

Lambeau Field has some of the most up-to-date locker rooms, sound systems and training facilities, but they turned back the clock on Sunday as part of the second annual "Summer Traditions."

"It gives kids of all ages a chance to experience a day in the past," manager of community relations Cathy Dworak said.

More than 2,000 people attended the event set in 1908 when Curly Lambeau was 10 years-old and featuring activities that took place at the turn of the century.

Those events, located in tents at the northeast corner of the Lambeau Field parking lot, included miniature pie eating contests, face painting, a petting zoo, complimentary Breyers ice cream, tractor races, wood carving demonstrations and a live band. Covered wagons, pinwheels and other props from the early 1900s were situated around the tents.

Several activities encouraged children to become more active. They could compete in a three-legged, gunny sack and wheelbarrow races. At the sawdu..

Packers Battle For Remaining Positions In The Secondary

Sunday's practice proved that competition in the Green Bay Packers' secondary has reached a high intensity.

"Everybody's trying to make a push," Nick Collins said.

The Packers released safety Arturo Freeman -- an indication of how heated the battle for roster spots has become.

Many observers thought the veteran Freeman could end up as the starter at strong safety because of his experience with the defensive scheme. He had spent his entire five-year career with the Miami Dolphins under defensive coordinator Jim Bates.

His release, however, will allow the Packers to take a more extensive look at other players.

"We just felt like we had to go in another direction, had to get the safeties' numbers down to where we could get more evaluation in the next three games," Bates said.

By letting go of Freeman with three preseason games to play, the coaching staff hopes he can hook on with another team. Bates said Freeman already has received ..

Packers To Begin Most Important Week Of Practice

The Green Bay Packers start their most critical week of practice on Sunday, Aug. 13, according to head coach Mike Sherman.

"This week is the most important of the preseason," Sherman said. "I look at this week as a key week for our football team in evaluation."

This week represents the last full week of training camp practices. Games versus the New England Patritos on Friday, Aug. 26 and the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, Sept. 1 will shorten those weeks.

Because of the significance of this week's practice, Sherman cancelled Saturday afternoon's session.

"I want to get them healthy and prepare them for a long and difficult week of practice," he said.

Sherman has not determined the starting guards. Although he expressed disappointment in the running game, he felt the mistakes could be fixed.

The Packers running game often doesn't become very effective until the third and fourth quarter. The line also faced an unfamiliar scheme, the..
This Week's Photos

The fervor of Packers fans has no limits. South Dakota and West Virginia residents traveled all the way to Green Bay for a Packers game. A Californian relished his experience in the frigid temperatures of Lambeau Field. A Texas fan rooted for the Packers in Houston's Reliant Center. A lucky Packers fan received the opportunity to meet Don Majkowski. These stories make up this week's batch of 'Fan Memories' as Packers fans tell us about some of their most memorable moments backing the Green and Gold.

My first game at Lambeau Field actually happened by coincidence. I was in town looking at colleges and visiting friends when I came across some fantastic fans.
Sander Starts Preseason On The Right Foot

It's no secret that BJ Sander had a rough season last year. Things didn't go as he had planned as a rookie, but to his credit, the punter knew he had to work extremely hard in the offseason and forget about the past.

If his latest performance is any indication, his punting woes may also be behind him at this point as well. Sander, the Packers third-round draft pick in 2004, was a highly touted performer coming out of college at Ohio State and the team knew that he was capable of being a great punter.

However, Head Coach Mike Sherman also knew that Sander could use some extra work in the spring. With that in mind, Sander went over to NFL Europe and led the league with a 36.6-yard net average.

Sander has had a strong showing in the preseason practices and his performance from his time overseas appeared to pay off. Yet, it was only practice, and although it was a good place to start, Sander wanted to prove himself in an NFL contest, even it was just a pres..

Longwell Saves The Day With Game-Winning Kick

As kicker Ryan Longwell signaled to Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman that he could nail the soaking football through the uprights, San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer can only wish he had a clutch kicker.

"When he gives me a thumbs up, I put three on the board," Sherman said.

Longwell hit a 53-yard field goal in torrential rain conditions to win the Packers' first preseason game 10-7 against the Chargers with 38 seconds left in front of 69,611 fans on Thursday night.

"This ain't a dome, and it ain't San Diego to kick in," Longwell said. "When it comes to crunch time you've got to know this place."

The Chargers second-year kicker Nate Kaeding had never kicked in Lambeau Field and missed three goals in the fourth quarter. He was wide left from 45 yard and wide right from 44 yards twice. His misses started off the season on the wrong note for him following a season he ended on the wrong note.
Favre On Top Of His Game In Packers Victory

When you've been playing as long as Packers quarterback Brett Favre has, the preseason might seem like an unenviable chore. Boring and unnecessary may also fit the description for a player of Favre's caliber.

But for someone who has accomplished so much in such a legendary career, Favre performed Thursday night like a man fighting for his NFL life.

Instead of just going through the motions with little effort, Favre played nearly flawless and led the Packers to their only touchdown of the evening on a 12-play, 80 yard drive in the second quarter. The drive culminated with Favre finding wide receiver Donald Driver on a 23-yard strike.

A key play came when the 15-year veteran connected with wide receiver/punt returner Antonio Chatman on a fourth and four from the San Diego 37 yard line for a first down. Just two plays later, Favre and Driver gave the crowd of 69,611 fans something to cheer about as the Packers took the 7-0 lead.

Notebook: Rookie Starts At Safety

Auspicious Debut
Rookie Nick Collins made his first start in an NFL game, and he impressed the coaching staff. He halted a Chargers drive to the Green Bay 32-yard line with an interception of an overthrown Drew Brees pass. In the first quarter he also tackled Chargers running back Andrew Pinnock so hard that he lost his helmet.

"I did pretty well," said the second-round draft pick.

Everyone knew of the 200-pounder's athleticism. He has a 40-inch vertical leap, but the rookie from Bethune-Cookman understood the defensive schemes on Thursday, which is a good thing because the 69,611 raucous fans made communication difficult.

"He's got a good grasp of it," said Mark Roman, who started opposite Collins at strong safety. "A lot of it is him being a smart kid, knowing what to do and getting everybody lined up."

He finished with three tackles on the night, and his performance could pave his way for a starting spot come opening day of the regula..

AP Story: Packers Top Chargers 10-7

Brett Favre's offseason work paid off in his first action of the preseason.

Favre, who trained with a strength and conditioning coach in the offseason for the first time, completed 9 of 10 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown in the Green Bay Packers' 10-7 victory against the San Diego Chargers.

"I think it's the best start he's had since I've been here," Packers sixth-year coach Mike Sherman said. "We usually knock the kinks out a little bit. But, he did a pretty good job tonight. It's as good as I can remember."

Favre guided Green Bay on an 80-yard scoring drive in the second quarter, in which he completed 7 of 8 passes for 64 yards. He capped the series with a 23-yard strike to Donald Driver and then jumped into the arms of his center, Mike Flanagan, who missed most of last season following a knee operation.

"We accomplished one goal: we went down the field and scored," Favre said at halftime of the game that was played in a steady drizzle. "..

Training Camp Notebook: Linebacker Na'il Diggs On The Mend

Diggs To Return Sooner, Not Later
Linebacker Na'il Diggs expects to play in the Packers' first regular season game despite tearing a knee ligament during Monday's practice.

"I would like to be 100 percent going into Detroit," he said. "Right now, it's a very realistic goal."

The Packers will need him during the season. Linebackers occupy a crucial position in defensive coordinator Jim Bates' attacking scheme. Diggs has averaged 117 tackles the last three years. He also brings such versatility that Bates has not decided whether to start him at weakside or strongside linebacker.

The coaching staff was relieved that Diggs tore his MCL and not any cartilage or his ACL - injuries which would have required him to miss much of the season.

"It's not a surgical issue, which certainly is an advantage for us and for him," head coach Mike Sherman said. "I'm grateful for that."

During his six seasons with the Packers, the player nicknamed "..

Packers' Offense Gears Up for Chargers

It did not take long for offensive coordinator Tom Rossley to decide on the No. 1 quarterback against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night.

"I think we'll start with Brett," he said with a laugh.

Selecting the third winningest quarterback of all time is a good call, but Brett Favre will not see a much action during the Green Bay Packers' first preseason game. The team knows what to expect from the 15-year-veteran, and preserving his health is of the utmost concern.

Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and J.T. O'Sullivan will handle most of the throws on Thursday with Rodgers taking the snaps once Favre heads to the bench. That will allow those quarterbacks to play more than a couple of series and find their rhythm.

"We definitely want to see more of J.T and Aaron," Rossley said. "Rather than try and play all four of them. I think it's easier to give them games."

Craig Nall likely will not see any time. But he has played four seasons with the Pa..

Training Camp Notebook: Starting Safety Positions Remain Up In The Air

Safety Watch
The safety position continues to serve as one of the most intriguing training camp battles, as veterans Arturo Freeman, Earl Little and Mark Roman jockey for position with rookies Nick Collins and Marviel Underwood.

"We have great competition there," head coach Mike Sherman said.

The Packers have used Collins on the starting team, pairing him with a veteran to mentor him on the checks and communications required of the position.

"He's a good athlete," Roman said. "All that's left for him now is to learn the defense."

Collins has made big plays in camp, highlighted by his fumble-inducing hit on running back Chris Robertson.

"He's breaking on the ball pretty well," wide receiver Donald Driver said.

Roman said the transition from college to the pros is more difficult for defensive players like Collins and Underwood. The play-call dictates what offensive players should do while the defenders must react and plan..

Favre Will Remain Packer For Life

With his first preseason game of his 15th season just around the corner, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has come a long way. He does not exactly remember his first preseason opponent as a Packers player. (He thinks it was the Kansas City Chiefs.) But he remembers his strategy.

"All I knew was throw it hard and as far as I can throw it," he said.

Although he gradually became a student of the game, that gunslingling style laid the foundation for a Hall of Fame career.

With legendary quarterbacks Steve Young and Dan Marino inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, Favre reflected on his legacy. Concussions ultimately ended Young's career. But Marino mulled offers from the Minnesota Vikings and his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, to continue playing before turning them down in the end.

Assuring Packers fans everywhere, he is not eyeing the end of his career and will not play for anyone else.

"I'm in no hurry for that to come..

Training Camp Notebook: Corey Williams Anchors Defensive Line

Look Who's Starting
With Grady Jackson having not passed his physical and Cletidus Hunt hampered by a sore shoulder and knee, second-year defensive tackle Corey Williams has entered the starting lineup ahead of more experienced veteran James Lee and Donnell Washington, who was more highly regarded coming out of college.

Much of Williams' improvement is mental. As a rookie, the schemes and adjustment to the pro game overwhelmed him.

"Last year I really didn't know what to expect," he said. "This year I was a little more confident. I knew a little bit more about what was going to go on."

Although he rises too high out of his stance when fatigued, he has improved his leverage by maintaining a low pad level.

For Williams, the maturation process started during last year's final regular season game versus the Chicago Bears on Jan.2. He recorded five tackles, including a sack that dropped Bears quarterback Chad Hutchinson for a six-yard loss.

Former Practice Squad Player Pushes For Starting Position

Growing up, Atlas Herrion wanted to become a running back -- perhaps the reincarnation of another Alabama native, Bo Jackson. Then during his sophomore and junior years at Daphne (Ala.) High School he grew four inches, and the NFL does not have a great demand for six-feet, four-inch running backs.

"I figured I better get my hand in the dirt," he said.

That's a good thing for the Green Bay Packers because with Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher, the team does not need another running back but has a spot on the line following the offseason departures of Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle as free agents.

Herrion, a former University of Alabama star, continues to rotate with Matt O'Dwyer at the starting right guard position.

"He's done a fine job for us," offensive line coach Larry Beightol said. "We like what we see there."

That's impressive praise for an undrafted free agent, who spent 2004 on the practice squad after the Packers cut him..

Training Camp Notebook: Sander Is The Last Man Standing

The One And Only Punter
With the Green Bay Packers waiving his main competition, punter Bryce Benekos, one would think punter B.J. Sander let out a deep breath on Sunday.

Not exactly.

The only punter on the Packers roster will not take anything for granted.

"That doesn't mean anything," he said. "As far I'm concerned I wasn't competing with just Bryce but with every guy out there that doesn't have a job. I look at this as a challenge."

With injuries mounting among the running backs and defensive backs, the team signed running back Joey Harris and cornerback Charles Byrd on Sunday. Waiving Benekos freed up a roster spot.

"We needed to help some depth issues on our team," head coach Mike Sherman said.

Running backs Najeh Davenport (ankle), Walt Williams (ankle) did not practice on Sunday while the team placed Chaz Williams (broken ankle) on injured reserve. Starting cornerbacks Joey Thomas (calf) and Al Harris (quadriceps..

Family Night Training Camp Notebook

Play On Words
Friday's "Family Night" scrimmage had an appropriate title for Packers linebacker Roy Manning. His parents traveled in from Saginaw, Mich. to watch him play in front of a game-like atmosphere at Lambeau Field.

Despite Manning's status as an undrafted free agent, his parents saw a lot of their son on the field. Throughout camp, the former University of Michigan player has consistently run with the second team as middle linebacker Nick Barnett's back up.

The Packers' coaching staff likes the 245-pounder's combination of size and speed.

"He's doing a nice job," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He has a lot to learn."

With linebackers Hannibal Navies (knee), Na'il Diggs (ankle), Kurt Campbell (knee) Brady Poppinga (hamstring) not playing in the morning practice, Manning saw action on the first team.

He has quickly mastered the transition from an outside linebacker in college to NFL middle linebacker. But the coaching sta..

"Family Night" Resembles Regular Season Game

The Lambeau Field crowd whooped and hollered as Packers linebacker Ray Thompson blitzed through the B gap toward the quarterback. Instead of drilling the Bills player between the numbers, he let up.

"At that point," he said. "I realized it was a scrimmage."

Other than the thud rules dictating linemen could hit each other but not the quarterbacks, Friday night's "Family Night" scrimmage at Lambeau Field between the Buffalo Bills and the Green Bay Packers seemed like a regular-season game.

The crowd set a Family Night attendance record with 62,492 fans, and many lined the streets more than two hours before the start of the practice session. Chants of "Go Pack Go!" reverberated around the stadium.

"When I ran onto the field, the juices were going," said quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who attended the University of California, Berkeley. "This is what I was missing in college. This atmosphere and the love that people have for football around here is unbelie..

Fans Enjoying The Packers Experience At Lambeau Field

If you have ever wondered what it is like to play in the National Football League, <a href="http://www.packerstrainingcamp.com/packers_experience/"target="new">The Packers Experience gives you that chance.

Located in the concourse area of Lambeau Field, the event has 12 activities, which simulates NFL football drills.

"All the games are pretty sweet," said Seth Wooll, 18, of St. Louis, Mo. "It's a cool thing for the little kids to have something to do during training camp."

Children and adults of all ages can bounce on a moonwalk inside of a large Packers helmet, kick footballs through an inflatable upright, wear the shoulder pads and helmet of an official uniform and juke inflatable defenders before scoring touchdowns. Other games include a passing challenge and an obstacle course.

The Packers Experience is free and will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m on Sundays until Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Rodgers Shreds The Bills Pass Defense

After struggling through June's organized team activity, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has enjoyed an impressive training camp, and he played his best thus far against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

"He did good," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said. "I thought he responded quite well."

Rodgers threw touchdowns to wide receiver Vince Butler against Bills cornerback Lawrence Richardson, wide receiver Craig Bragg versus Bills cornerback Therrian Fontneot, and tight end Tory Humphrey against Bills cornerback Rob Lee.

Toward the end of practice, he found running back Tony Fisher matched up against Wendell Hunter, a rookie linebacker and former University of California-Berkeley teammate, and hit him with a touchdown.

"He had pretty good coverage," Rodgers said. "I threw a pretty good ball."
Such plays seemed unthinkable a month ago.

Training Camp Report: Bills Stampede Into Green Bay

Fourteen-year NFL veteran and Buffalo Bills cornerback Troy Vincent, a Pro Bowler in his day, now enters the twilight of his career. He could relate to another grizzled veteran, who held a bicycle.

"You know I just retired," the child told Vincent, who attended the University of Wisconsin.

Going into eighth grade, the boy had reached the age limit to escort a Green Bay Packers player to practice via his bicycle.

As the Bills participated in a joint scrimmage on Thursday night, they experienced a unique atmosphere, including thousands of passionate fans and a biking tradition.

"It's something I've always watched on television. I saw it when I was at Madison as a student-athlete there. You see it on the ESPN highlights," Vincent said. "I said, 'Man, I hope I get a chance to ride that bike.'"

Indeed, Vincent and many other Bills received that bike ride and participated in a ritual that dates back to 1961, when Vince Lombardi asked his players..

Referees Explain New Rules For 2005 NFL Season

NFL officials outlined the rules changes for the 2005 season on Thursday by showing an instructional video and answering questions from the media.

The changes include those geared to player safety and use of timeouts and will be explained to both the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills prior to Thursday night's joint practice.

"We don't make the rules," said NFL umpire Jim Quirk."We're just asked to enforce them."

Quirk will enforce several player safety rules, including the elimination of peel-back blocks, which often occur on screen passes. If an offensive lineman blocks below the waist, to the side or from behind, the play will result in a 15-yard penalty.

Any hit on a player away from the play or having nothing to do with the play will also receive a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. The 2002 blind-side block by then Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp on Packers offensive tackle Chad Clifton would fall under the category.

Training Camp Notebook: Javon Walker Provides Deep Threat

Walker Steps Up
Despite not participating in the offseason program, wide receiver Javon Walker has had a very strong training camp. He had one of his best days during Wednesday's practice.

His highlight reel included beating safety Earl Little on a crossing route to haul in a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Favre.

"That's what we look for as receivers," he said. "Any time we can get the defense backing up on a deep throw, it opens up what we're trying to do across the middle."

Walker said he tries to not to get excited about one day of practice. He knows that training camp is a marathon, not a sprint.

"Training camp's always hard. You're out there every day. You're practicing non-stop," he said. "It's a lot of strain on the muscles."

**

Looking Ahead To A Different Opponent
The Packers will welcome the Buffalo Bills for two practices and Friday's "Family Night" scrimmage.

"It's kind of ..

Packers Look For Starting Guards Among A Deep Offensive Line

Offensive line coach Larry Beightol has not established the starting offensive line, but he likes what he sees.

"I want competition," he said. "Competition is going to bring all the cream to the top. Nobody's going to take a day off when you've got competition."

The most heated competition occurs at the guard positions vacated by the departures of Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera. Free agent additions Matt O'Dwyer and Adrian Klemm are battling with veterans Atlas Herrion and Grey Ruegamer, who started 11 games at center last year in place of the injured Mike Flanagan, for the two spots.

"I think they're going to be great," fullback Nick Luchey said. "I don't think we're going to miss a beat."

The foursome has rotated repetitions with Klemm and O'Dwyer starting one day and Herrion and Ruegamer on the next.

Beightol said Ruegamer had his best day in camp on Wednesday.

"Ruegamer is looking very good to me," he said. "He's a tough, hard-n..

GM Ted Thompson Speaks Out

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson held his first press conference of training camp and discussed a variety of topics, including his team's outlook, personnel and "Family Night."

He does not concern himself that few have predicted the Packers will win a fourth consecutive NFC North title.

"I don't think you get too worked up about whether people think you're going to be the champion or not or you're going to be the last place team," he said. "It doesn't mean anything to us."

Of more concern is the injuries that have sidelined several running backs, including Ahman Green (back), Chris Robertson (knee) and Walt Williams (ankle). Thompson has lauded the trio of Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher as "a three-headed monster," but could consider adding a running back to the roster.

"We're a little stressed at the running back position," he said.

The Packers will host the Buffalo Bills during a scrimmage on "Family Night." Head co..

Training Camp Notebook: Hawkins Has All The Tools

Who Needs Four Years Of College?
When Pro Bowl wide receiver Javon Walker lines up, one would expect to see a veteran defensive back in coverage. Instead the cornerback has a measly year of college football under his belt.

Mike Hawkins, a rookie drafted in the fifth round, attended the University of Oklahoma in 2002 before moving onto the Arena League in 2004 and 2005.

"My talent takes over the years I missed," Hawkins said. "I felt in the draft I should have gone higher."

He talked the talk and walked the walk. Matched up frequently against Walker in 7-on-7 drills, he read Walker's comeback route and jumped the Brett Favre pass. It would have been an interception had he held onto the ball. He intercepted Aaron Rodgers, breaking on a pass that caromed off of tight end Steve Fleming.

The cornerback has learned from the best. Hawkins, a Carrollton, Texas native, met Dallas resident and Ravens cornerback Deion Sanders in the Dallas airport...

Favre Dishes The Truth About His Offseason

On the day following a crushing Green Bay Packers playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Brett Favre met with quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell to discuss the season. Favre had put up staggering numbers, throwing for 4,088 yards and 30 touchdowns but had a regret.

"I felt like I could have done more," he said. "I couldn't sit here today and pinpoint a play, but I just knew."

Favre said with better mobility he could have dodged defenders on five or six plays. To improve Favre's elusiveness and stamina, strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin suggested a personal trainer named Ken Croener. Favre had always worked out in the offseason on his own, but the Packers paid for the outside help.

In his hometown of Kiln, Miss., Croener worked him out 50 minutes-a-day, emphasizing core exercises to strengthen his abdomen and back. Having strength in those muscles will help when he throws from awkward positions during a game.

He also concentrated on footbal..

Training Camp Notebook: Defense Will 'Surprise A Lot Of People'

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
The Green Bay Packers' defense has something to prove, a theme carried over from Sunday's practice.

"We've got a chip on our shoulder. No one expects anything out of us," linebacker Nick Barnett said on Monday. "We're going to surprise a lot of people around the NFL and around the world."

Barnett backed up his words. During the morning practice, he knifed through the offensive line to stop running back Najeh Davenport in his tracks.

To improve their tackling, the team goes through daily drills where defensive coordinator Jim Bates emphasizes hitting the ball carrier low and playing with good leverage. During the morning session, the defense clogged up running lanes on the interior and perimeter. The focus on fundamentals could help a defense that allowed 4.6 yards-a-carry last year.

"We are going to be a good tackling team," he said. "We cannot allow the big run."

Bates praised the depth of the defensive line, sing..

Hard-hitting Nick Collins Makes Play of The Day

Unsuspecting running back Chris Robertson ran toward the middle of the field when safety Nick Collins leveled him, not so politely informing who patrols that area.

The crash of the shoulder pads could be heard from the sidelines.

"That ball's coming out on Sundays the way he hit it," defensive coordinator Jim Bates said. "That's what we're looking for ... We'll definitely show that play a bunch of times to our defense."

The rookie safety drove his helmet into the football to force a fumble. The play during a 9-on-7 drill became the day's highlight and earned him praise from the coaching staff.

The demonstrative Bates jumped up, putting an arm around Collins' shoulder pad and screamed: "Get this guy a drink of water! Get this guy a drink of water!"

He explained his exuberance.

"It's just a recognition ploy," Bates said. "It's to point out ... when you make a play, we're going to reward you."

As training camp continues, he..
