Confidence, Mechanics Help Sander Improve In Year Two

It wasn't after a good punt that Ryan Longwell realized how much second-year punter B.J. Sander had improved from last year. It was after a bad one.

Sander shanked a 32-yarder off the side of his foot during the second quarter of the Green Bay Packers' Aug. 20 preseason game versus the Buffalo Bills.

"Last year that would have led him into a tailspin where it would have been three or four bad kicks in a row," Longwell said. "He came back with the next two and hit them both perfect. That was really the sign he was taking everything in stride."

Sander has responded all season long like he did after that 32-yard punt. His net punting average of 38.6 ranks a respectable 12th in the NFL, and that average would represent more than five yards of improvement from the Packers' average last year.

"I'm pretty happy with the way my season is going," Sander said.

His performance against the Detroit Lions in Week One may have served as the highlight of ..

Sibling Rivalry: Cullen Jenkins Faces Brother's Team

When Packers defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins looks across the sideline on Monday night, he will see a familiar and familial face.

His older brother, Kris, plays defensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers, setting up a game for respect among the Jenkins family on Oct. 3.

"There are bragging rights," Cullen Jenkins said.

More would be on the line if Kris was healthy. After missing 12 games in 2004 with a shoulder injury, Kris tore knee ligaments in a 23-20 Week One loss to the New Orleans Saints and will not play again in 2005.

"He's been looking forward to this game for a long time," Cullen said. "So I wanted him to be out there to play against me."

His absence does more than lessen the competitive juices within the Jenkins family. Jenkins served as a crucial part of the Panthers defense. Stout against the run and a fierce pass rusher, he helped give the Panthers one of the league's best defensive lines and key their run to the Supe..

Hey Packers fans, here's your chance to share with other fans from around the world your favorite memories of the Green and Gold!

Each week, Packers.com will post a new feature called 'Packers Fan Memories.'
Your first time at Lambeau Field... The first time you met a Packers legend... Your favorite piece of Packers memorabilia...Your family's pre-game tailgating ritual. You name it. We want to hear about it in 'Fan Memories' as Packers fans tell us about some of their most memorable moments backing the Green and Gold.

My wife and I brought a good friend and his father to their first Packers game in October 2004, and we stopped for a bite to eat at Brett Favre's Steakhouse. Sitting next to our table was Brett's Mom and some of her family and friends..

Packers Are Ready For Some 'Monday Night Football'

The prospect of playing in front of a national audience on Monday Night Football versus the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 3 has sent waves of excitement through the Green Bay Packers' locker room.

"It's a dream come true," guard William Whitticker said. "You always watch Monday Night Football, and everybody tunes into it."

Although the rookie Whitticker will play on that primetime stage for the first time, the Packers have appeared on Monday Night Football 45 times with a record of 24-20-1. Since Mike Sherman became coach in 2000, no other NFL team owns a better record on Monday night, as the Packers have posted a 9-3 record in that time.

Nine-year-veteran kicker Ryan Longwell has lost count of how many times he has played on Monday night. But he never will forget his first experience -- his first NFL game and a 1997 Packers 38-24 win against the Chicago Bears. But the games still cause him goosebumps.

"They're all fun," Longwell said. ..

High-Motor Kampman Poised For Career Year

Aaron Kampman's green practice jersey hangs off a brass hook in his locker, and a crease folds his memorable No. 74 in half. He never thought of changing that number to one in the 90s -- more commonly worn by defensive lineman.

"I had the opportunity after my second year to change my number to 90-something, a traditional defensive line number," Kampman said. "I kind of like keeping it the way it is. It helps me remember how I've come into this league and reminds me of who I am and what I am and how to keep working."

He has not stopped.

A fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Iowa in 2002, Kampman did not receive an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, which includes more than 300 draft-eligible prospects.

Now the hard-working fourth-year player leads the Green Bay Packers in sacks with two and ranks fourth in tackles with 19.

"He's having a heck of a season right now, being very physical," head coach Mike Sherman said. "I can..

Third Year Is A Charm For Peterson

With the Green Bay Packers cutting their roster down to 53 players two days after their final preseason game, Kenny Peterson's job was on the line. He struggled through much of training camp, and the Packers had several promising defensive linemen on the roster.

"He was on the wire," head coach Mike Sherman said. "And he knew it."

The third-year defensive lineman responded with an all-around performance against the Tennessee Titans to land a roster spot. And he has carried that momentum into the season. Through three games he has six tackles, amounting to one-fifth of his career total.

"He's been producing pretty good when he's been out there," Sherman said. "He's playing much better."

On Sunday he had one of his best games, stopping Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Carnell Williams, the NFL's leading rusher, on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter. After tackling Williams on a short pass for no gain, he and linebacker Nick Barnett held Willia..

Retirement Far From Favre's Mind

Some pundits have hypothesized that the Green Bay Packers' disappointing 0-3 start has pushed Brett Favre into retirement mode.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

In reality Favre is so focused on leading the Packers to their first win that he has not given a second thought to when he will retire.

"At 0-3, I think most people would say, 'Oh he's gone after this year, or they won't even want him back,'" Favre said. "I haven't even thought about that. ... I don't even think about when that time will come."

At 0-3, Favre does find himself in an unfamiliar situation. He has neither started a season with that record nor finished one with a winning percentage worse than .500 as a Packers quarterback.

The 15-year-veteran has accepted his role of leading a young team -- something Favre called the "maybe the biggest challenge" of his playing career. Head coach Mike Sherman gave him high grades on his leadership and attitude.

Majik: Packers Let Another One Slip Away

It happened again. Once more the Packers had a very winnable game right in front of them, and they let it slip away. This time it was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who rode off in a brand new "Cadillac," leaving the Packers choking on fumes. Rookie Carnell "Cadillac" Williams rushed for 158 yards on 37 carries and wore down Green Bay's defense. After three games the Packers are still searching for their first victory. It shouldn't be this way.

In my last column I talked about what the Packers needed to do to beat the Bucs. They needed to improve in the turnover battle. They needed to limit penalties and silly mistakes. Unfortunately none of these things happened. You can't give up four turnovers and expect to beat very many teams. You can't rack up eight penalties. Frankly, the margin of defeat might have been worse if Tampa Bay didn't get flagged for eight penalties themselves.

In the past, the running game and misdirection passing plays were the strength of the Packers..

Remmel: Packers vs. Panthers

Competitively speaking, the Packers and the Carolina Panthers have been acquainted for less than a decade, the Carolinians having entered the National Football League as an expansion team in 1995. Yet their association has been marked by some significant events - one of them singular, to say the least.

Singular, that is, considering the great preponderance of NFL rivalries have begun in scheduled, regular-season play.

Not so with the Packers and Panthers, who will be squaring off in picturesque Charlotte, N.C., Monday night. They were not on each other's agenda during Carolina's first two years in the league (1995-96) and, consequently, their first-ever on-field meeting occurred in a most unlikely circumstance ... the postseason.

In a National Conference Championship Game, no less - just one level removed from the Super Bowl - in Lambeau Field following the '96 season.

In the case of the Green and Gold, the team's presence at that lofty level was ..

Murphy Could Add Punch To Kickoff Returns

Waiting for a football precipitously hanging in the lights and then eluding the 11 men storming down the field set to pummel you requires a special mentality. And rookie wide receiver Terrence Murphy thrives in that role as kick returner.

"It's an adrenaline rush," Murphy said. "You've got guys charging. It's like "Braveheart." They're coming full speed, screaming ... And they're coming down to take you out."

Braving pursuing marauders for the first time in an NFL game, the rookie Murphy returned two kickoffs for 54 yards during the Green Bay Packers' 17-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Murphy did a nice job on our kickoff returns," head coach Mike Sherman said. "That was a bright spot."

Murphy's skills could serve as an upgrade to a Packers' kickoff return unit ranked 14th in the league. Last year the Packers also ranked 14th in the league in kickoff returns, averaging 21.7 yards and zero touchdowns.

"We need a kickoff returner who c..

Letters To Majik

Dear Majik, should the Packers go out on the free market and sign a wide receiver? - Reginald, Hampton, Wis.

Reginald, the Packers brought a few wide receivers in and worked them out. For whatever reason they did not sign any. I know that a receiver who is fourth or fifth-string has to play special teams. I don't think some of the players they brought in were willing to do that.

Hey Majik, were you ever 100% after you injured your shoulder in 1990? - Mike, Hinton, Wis.

Mike, after the surgery on my throwing arm, it was difficult to throw exactly the way I did when I was healthy. I never could regain the quick release and accuracy that I once had. It was extremely frustrating because I did everything in my power to regain full strength, but no dice.
Rossley Is 'Fine And Ready To Go'

After spending Sunday morning and night in the hospital because of chest pains, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Tom Rossley reported to be in good health.

"I'm strong. I feel good," Rossley said. "It was a just a little scare."

Rossley passed all of his cardiovascular tests on Sunday and Monday. He likely experienced discomfort because of his high cholesterol and a minor artery problem. He will continue taking the same dosage of medicine.

"Everything came out positive," he said. "I'm fine and ready to go."

Rossley, known as an extremely hard worker, underwent an emergency angioplasty to open a clogged artery in 2004. Despite his recent scare, he will not alter his work schedule with the team in a 0-3 hole.

"If anything we'll dig in more," he said.

Rossley began feeling discomfort on Saturday night. When he awoke on Sunday morning, he went for a long walk, hoping that would refresh him. He then prepared to handle his normal..

Carroll Rebounds With Game-Changing Performance

While reviewing tape of their game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, Ahmad Carroll's interception so impressed eight-year-veteran safety Earl Little that he curiously turned to the second-year cornerback.

"How did you make that play on the ball?" Little said. "It was an amazing play."

Carroll made that play with the Buccaneers at the Green Bay 32-yard-line and poised to score. Quarterback Brian Griese heaved a pass to running back Michael Pittman with 9:31 left in the game. The ball lodged between Pittman and Carroll, but Carroll deftly scooped it out with one hand before rolling over.

"The interception was certainly a great break on the ball," head coach Mike Sherman said.

Carroll's performance extended beyond one play. Starting in place of Joey Thomas, who sat out the game because of a concussion suffered during Week Two, he recorded six tackles and one pass defended. He also avoided committing the penalties, which plagued him in Week O..

Offensive Coordinator Receives Pre-Game Scare

It's an incredible understatement to say football is important in Tom Rossley's life, but it's still nowhere near the significance of his health.

Last season, Rossley, who's now in his sixth year as the Packers offensive coordinator, underwent an emergency angioplasty to open a clogged artery. On Sunday, Rossley received another scare before the Packers contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head Coach Mike Sherman knew that something was wrong early on in the day after meeting with Rossley before the game.

"We were getting ready to go out for pregame and he was in my office down here in the stadium," Sherman said. "We were reviewing our third down calls and I could just tell...Earlier in the day he looked a little flush.

Health is one area that can't be negotiated and Sherman wasn't about to take any chances with his friend and offensive coordinator, either.

"I looked at him again in my office," Sherman explained. "I said, 'are..

Notebook: Carroll Takes Step In Right Direction

Ahmad Carroll definitely has had a rough couple weeks to start this season. He received four penalties (three were accepted) in the team's opening loss at Detroit and in week two, cornerback Joey Thomas received the start ahead of Carroll.

On Sunday, Carroll appeared to make a few positive strides in being an impact player for the Green and Gold.

Starting in place of Thomas, who sat out with a concussion suffered last week, the second-year player out of Arkansas notched five tackles on the day, and seemingly did a good job in his technique as he avoided any penalties. But his fourth quarter interception was even more impressive.

Carroll dove for the Brian Griese pass and when he rolled over he had complete control of the ball. He had the presence of mind to return the ball 38 yards to the Tampa Bay 32-yard line before losing his balance and hitting the ground.

Had Carroll scored a touchdown on the play, Sherman joked, "I might have invited..

Immediately following the Green Bay Packers' 17-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Packers general manager Ted Thompson approached Brett Favre to gauge his mood.

Favre compared his frustration to the start of the 2004 season when the Packers lost four of their first five games.

"Being 0-3 or 1-4, I don't know if one feels worse than the other," Favre said "It feels terrible."

Favre took the loss especially hard, heaping blame on himself. While he averaged 7.1 yards-a-pass and threw two touchdown passes, he also threw three interceptions.

"You can't make mistakes," Favre said. "It starts with me."

Sherman, however, defended his quarterback.

"I wouldn't say he threw it up," Sherman said. "This is Brett Favre."

His first interception came with 9:25 left in the second quarter. Cornerback Brian Kelly read Donald Driver route at the 40-yard-line.

"They all jump routes," Favre said. "That's what they're good at."

Costly Mistakes Undermine Packers' Best Effort Of The Season

Faced with a fourth-and-four at the Tampa Bay 37 during the first quarter, The Packers gambled on the arm of their gunslinging quarterback. The play netted an odds-defying jackpot, a 37-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre to Robert Ferguson.

"At that point in the game we needed to take that chance," head coach Mike Sherman said. "We took a shot."

While the Packers converted that improbable play in their 17-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the routine mistakes did them in front of 70, 518 observers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. The usually reliable Ryan Longwell missed an extra point and a 32-yard-field goal, 2004 Pro Bowl fullback William Henderson lost a fumble and Favre wishes he threw away his three interceptions.

"If we just correct one or two of these mistakes," Favre said, "We win."

The first mistake occurred on the game's opening drive. The Packers moved the ball from their 30-yard-line to the Tampa Bay 37. Wide receiver Robert Ferguson c..

AP Story: Bucs Edge Packers 17-16 At Lambeau Field

Lambeau Field isn't such an intimidating place for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers anymore.

Carnell "Cadillac" Williams helped the Buccaneers snap a 13-game road losing streak to Green Bay with a 17-16 win over the Packers. He broke Alan Ameche's NFL record for most yards in his first three NFL games by rushing for 158 on a sprained left foot.

The Buccaneers, 3-0 for the first time since 2000, also got two touchdown receptions from Joey Galloway and two interceptions from safety Will Allen in winning at Lambeau Field for the first time since Sept 10, 1989.

Ryan Longwell missed an extra point for the first time in 157 attempts, and that was the difference as the Packers fell to 0-3 for the first time since Brett Favre was a sophomore at Southern Miss in 1988.

"It's hard to find a silver lining in 0-3," Favre said. "But as they say, the show must go on and we have to find a way to win a game."

Packers-Bucs Press Box Notes

TODAY: Former NFC Central rivals square off in Tampa Bay's first trip to Lambeau Field since 2001 (the year before the NFL realigned)...Green Bay hopes to avoid its first 0-3 start since 1988...The Packers have won 13 consecutive home games over the Bucs, including playoffs. Green Bay's last loss in Wisconsin was a 23-21 setback at Lambeau Field, Sept. 10, 1989...Today's contest involves two of the NFL's leading sack artists since the '01 season, Simeon Rice and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.

FAVRE'S HOME TOUCHDOWN STREAK: Brett Favre has thrown for a TD in 22 consecutive Lambeau Field games (25 including playoffs). The last time a team held Favre without a TD in his home stadium was Oct. 20, 2002, when Washington's LaVar Arrington sacked the quarterback, spraining his lateral collateral knee ligament and forcing him from the game early in the second half. It's the second such 22-game streak in Favre's career.

Majik: Are You Ready For Some Error-Free Football?

Error-free football.

I know it's a very tall order, but that's the kind of performance the Packers will probably need to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field. They can't afford to keep making the mistakes -- the penalties and mental errors that cost them the first two games of this young regular season.

As coach Mike Sherman has emphasized throughout training camp and into the regular season, Green Bay needs to eliminate its own turnovers, and the defense needs to start forcing opponents to cough up the football. If the Packers can win the turnover ratio, they've got a real chance to win this game. It's an old cliche in the NFL that when you lose the turnover battle you usually lose the game. In my experience that cliche holds up.

On offense the Packers need to continue to work hard and improve their pass protection for Brett Favre. The Buccaneers present a very big challenge in this area. Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffi..

Stout Run Defense Aims To Keep Cadillac In Neutral

Cornerback Ahmad Carroll knows first hand the skill of Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams.

While in college at the University of Arkansas, Carroll marveled as the Auburn University running back shredded his Razorbacks defense for 177 yards on 19 carries as a freshman.

"He's got the total package," he said. "He's the truth."

The Packers' run defense will face a true test on Sunday. That unit has served as a strength this season but faces Williams, the NFL's leading rusher.

"He's really made a splash this season," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said.

The Packers' run defense has also made waves. Ranked seventh in the NFL, the Packers have allowed 78.5 yards-a-game.

They limited Detroit Lions' running back Kevin Jones and Cleveland Browns' running back Reuben Droughns, who both surpassed 1,000 rushing yards last year, to 87 yards on 25 carries and 50 yards on 20 carries, respectively.

Lucky Fan Paints Lambeau Field End Zones

The grounds crew received a little help on Friday morning from Lynn West, a Hudson, Wis., native.

During Fan Fest in March, West's silent auction bid awarded her the chance to paint the letters in the Lambeau Field end zones.

"That's the most amazing feeling," said West, dressed in a No. 36 LeRoy Butler jersey and Packers hat, as she painted the "B" in Bay.

Her husband, friend and parents took turns painting. Her parents journeyed up from Cape Coral, Fla.

The giddy troop took turns rubbing footballs into the yellow lettering. Lynn's brother made sure to spray his Brett Favre jersey. Lynn wore new, white shoes on Friday to soak up all the yellow.

"I want that on everything that goes home with me," she said.

According to Fields Manager Allen Johnson, the Packers had never allowed a fan to paint the end zones before.

The West family and friends painted neatly, staying within the lines of the lettering. But Johnson is not w..

Packers Have Become Well-Versed In The Bucs' Defense

When offensive tackle Chad Clifton and the rest of the Packers' offense breaks down tape of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense, they observe a very familiar scheme.

"Each time you watch them, each time you play them," Clifton said. "You know what you're getting."

Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has run the same defense for 10 consecutive years.

The Buccaneers defense may not have changed greatly during the last decade, but it has proven to be successful. They bring the NFL's No. 1-ranked defense into Lambeau Field on Sunday.

"We're not very difficult to figure out," 11-year-veteran Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks said. "Sometimes less is better."

Indeed the Buccaneers have ranked among the top 10 defenses in the NFL for the last eight years.

Their cover-2 scheme calls for two safeties to divide half the field, preventing the deep ball. The front seven features quick but small players, who can penetrate up the field and pre..

Coaching Staff Looks For KGB To Step Up

Perhaps no Packers defensive player can change a game like Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.

Although the defensive end recorded two quarterback pressures and five tackles against the Cleveland Browns, head coach Mike Sherman met with him on Wednesday because he wants more heat on the passer.

'He just said he needs me," Gbaja-Biamila said. "He was disappointed and he should be."

Neither Gbaja-Biamila nor any other Packers player recorded a sack against the Browns. The defense as a whole takes responsibility, but much of it falls on the talented Gbaja-Biamila, who has posted double digit sacks in the last three consecutive years, including 13.5 in 2004.

"Kabeer is our premier guy," Sherman said. "We want him to get 14 to 16 sacks."

Last year's third-leading sacker in the NFL said he will become even more tenacious, not letting up until the whistle blows on Sunday. He will go through and around his opposing lineman.

Favre Faces 'Biggest Challenge' Of Playing Career

Quarterback Brett Favre sat down with head coach Mike Sherman on Tuesday to discuss his quest of leading a young, 0-2 team to a season befitting the standards set by the Green Bay Packers organization.

"I consider this part or this stage in my career maybe the biggest challenge I've ever faced individually or as a team," Favre said.

The current Packers roster is tied for the NFC lead with their number of rookies and first-year players (13), and the 15-year-veteran relishes the prospect of teaching a young team how to win.

"To lead this young team is something promising," he said. "These experts have written us off."

He has passed for 50, 277 passing yards and 379 touchdowns. He has won 135 games, a Super Bowl championship and an NFL-record three MVP awards. But this challenge has stoked Favre's juices more than any statistic or honor could.
Packers Fortify Tight End Position

You could say tight end Bubba Franks is durable.

When he last missed a game, he was playing a different sport.

While playing basketball at Big Spring (Texas) High School, he became frustrated and kicked a wall, injuring his foot.

The Packers, however, have listed their sturdy gridiron star as questionable for this Sunday's game with a bruised knee.

"I still haven't come to grips with the fact that Bubba would be unavailable because he's always been there," Sherman said.

Although the three-time Pro Bowler has never missed a game and could end up practicing later in the week, the Packers have prepared for any eventuality by signing tight end Ben Steele.

Steele replaces the roster spot vacated by wide receiver Javon Walker. The wide receiver tore a knee ligament against the Detroit on Sept. 11, and the team placed him on injured on Wednesday. The Packers released Steele, who played in 15 games last year, on Sept. 6.

Lambeau Experience Is Priceless

You always hear people talk about the special atmosphere surrounding Lambeau Field, and I'm sure most fans around the country probably think, "Yeah, whatever ... blah, blah, blah." Well, I'm here to tell you: There is no place like Lambeau Field.

I've been to every stadium in the NFL, and there is no doubt that the Lambeau Field experience is like no other. It's like stepping back in time. There's this beautiful stadium in the middle of a tiny little town. Step out of the hotel and, just like that, you are surrounded by history. Vince Lombardi, Ray Nitschke, Bart Starr ... it's just incredible if you're a football fan to start looking at the names associated with this franchise.

I've been to Green Bay many times, but my visit there last weekend for the Browns-Packers telecast on CBS was something new. I looked at it differently this time, and I appreciated it more than ever.

Remmel: Packers vs Bucs

PACKERS-BUCS SERIES PUNCTUATED WITH HISTORIC HAPPENINGS

The Packers' rivalry with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now in its 29th year, has been punctuated by historical happenings from the beginning.

In fact, a surprising number of them occurred during the first decade of the Green and Gold's relationship with their former fellow members of the NFC Central, a series launched in 1977 when the Buccaneers were in the second year of their NFL existence --and one in which the Packers currently lead 29-18-1.

The Bucs, who Sunday visit Lambeau Field for a 49th meeting with the Green and Gold (50 including playoffs), were barely 3 years old when the first major historical accomplishment -- at least from the Packers' perspective -- lit up their mutual horizon.

It was a sunny Sabbath afternoon in Tampa Stadium, Oct. 12, 1980, when Packers quarterback Lynn Dickey exhibited what remains the hottest hand in team annals. The big man from little Osawatomie, Ka..

Ahman Green Chats, Plays Video Game Against Fans

On Tuesday Packers running back Ahman Green played in a game but did not carry the football once.

Green participated in the latest installment of the Xbox Live "Game With Fame" program. He played Halo2 against fans from around the country and communicated with them through a headset.

The running back played several games against about 15 people at a time. He clearly enjoyed himself while playing the video games, often laughing at the players' comments.

"It's my hobby. It's fun. It gets your mind off of other stuff," Green said. "That's why Brett [Favre] goes hunting after a game. That's why guys go fishing. That's why guys like to race cars or paint. My thing is Xbox."

Green said he would like to play as much as 10 hours-a-day but usually plays one to two hours-a-night. His day job as the Packers' leading rusher in 2005, however, has prevented from playing for two months.

Leach Earned First NFL Start Against Browns

Second-year-fullback Vonta Leach's stomach did not have time to nervously churn in anticipation of his first NFL start.

That's because he became aware of that role seconds before it occurred.

"Going into the game I didn't know if I was going to get the start," Leach said. "There was never an indication."

He ran down the field to block on Sunday's initial kickoff return. After the touchback, he started to jog to the sideline when running backs coach Edgar Bennett pointed at him to remain in the game.

Against the Cleveland Browns Leach logged 18 offensive snaps, which amounts to 23.4 percent of the offense's plays. He caught one pass for five yards, but lead blocking for running backs and slowing pass rushers constituted most of his duties. On several short-yardage plays, he pummeled the Browns' safeties.

Leach, however, remained critical of his performance, citing his need to improve his balance and use his hands more effectively while blo..

Majik: Packers Miss Chance To Cash In

The Packers missed out on a good opportunity to take advantage of a team in transition, and even up their record in the process on Sunday. The stars were perfectly aligned. The Packers were at home before 70,400 loyal Lambeau Field fans. They got an emotional boost with the retirement of Reggie White's number. But it was all like a check that Green Bay failed to cash, and now they find themselves on the wrong end of a 0-2 record with the red hot Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming to town.

So what happened? First of all, Sunday's opponent, the Cleveland Browns, did an outstanding job of limiting their penalties and turnovers. Going into this game, I felt that the team that played with the most discipline and had the least turnovers probably would win. That was clearly the case. The Browns played within their system and quarterback Trent Dilfer had an outstanding game. Dilfer managed the offense very well, didn't make any mistakes and completed some short passes. The Browns beat th..

Letters To Majik

I would like to compare the loss of Javon Walker to the loss of Sterling Sharpe several years ago. When Sterling went down and subsequently out of the game, Brett was forced to "discover" his other options and spread the ball around more. All he did then was go deeper into the playoffs and eventually win a Super Bowl. Now, a lot has to happen and of course time is running out on his illustrious career, but don't give-up on this team quite yet. There is still a lot of "magiC" left in this offense. What's your opinion? - Brian, Grand Island, Neb.

Brian, there's no question our offense can play better than they did against Detroit & Cleveland. The offensive line will begin to build more continuity and our running game will benefit greatly. Once we become more balanced again, I'm certain that the fans will see the positive results. Replacing Javon will be a huge task. It is going to take a complete team effort offensively to do so.

Notebook: Perfectionist Murphy Reflects On First NFL Game

Auspicious Debut
Given a day to break down film of his first NFL game, rookie wide receiver Terrence Murphy remained critical of his performance despite catching three passes for 23 yards

"I did alright for my first game," Murphy said. "I didn't go out there and just blow it, but I still have mistakes I made."

He cited the need to improve his work in the red zone and his overall understanding of the offense.

"Everything's moving so fast for me right now," Murphy said.

Wide receiver Robert Ferguson, who Murphy considers a mentor, approached Murphy before the game and told him to relax. After the game he praised the performance from the second-round draft pick he affectionately calls his "nephew."

"His effort was great," Ferguson said. "You definitely see the talent. He just needs to fine tune some things."

Murphy's three catches came during two fourth quarter scoring drives, setting up touchdown passes to Ferguson and ru..

0-2 Start Tests Resolve Of Frustrated Team

An exasperated Green Bay Packers team has an 0-2 record -- tied for last place in the NFC North -- and faces a schedule that becomes more difficult as the season wears on.

While reflecting on the dire situation, head coach Mike Sherman used the words of the luminary, whose position he now occupies.

"It was Coach Lombardi that said that 'adversity doesn't build character. It reveals character,'" Sherman said. "That's so true."

The next few weeks may indicate a lot about the fortitude of the team, but they refuse to use last year as a rallying cry. The Packers started 1-4 in 2004 before winning nine of their last 11 games en route to their third consecutive NFC North title.

"We can't look back to anything," cornerback Al Harris said. "We have to look at what's going on right now. Last year was last year. We had different players."

That perspective of dealing with the here and now comes from straight from Sherman, who shoots from the hip.

Critical Breakdowns Doom Packers

The Green Bay Packers' struggles continued Sunday as they dropped their home opener to the Cleveland Browns, 26-24.The loss puts the Packers in an 0-2 hole and at the bottom of the NFC North Division with the Minnesota Vikings, who also remain winless.

Fresh off a 17-3 setback versus the Detroit Lions last week, the Packers looked to regain some momentum at home on a day in which the late Reggie White had his number 92 retired during a halftime ceremony.

The Green and Gold certainly looked impressive on their opening drive with a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped off with a 42-yard Brett Favre touchdown pass to wide receiver Donald Driver. Unfortunately for the Packers, they failed to get into the end zone again until the fourth quarter.

It's not as if the Packers didn't produce any offense between the first and fourth quarters, but they had trouble producing the touchdowns they so desperately needed. In fact, the team put together three drives in the sec..

92: Never To Be Worn Again, Never To Be Forgotten

Greatness only comes along every so often. When it does, perhaps the most difficult task is recognizing just how special someone truly is.

With the late Reggie White, however, everyone who knew him or even came in contact with him could truly sense his greatness. Sure, people will always remember White chasing down quarterbacks, but the best part of his legacy begins and ends with the kind of life he led off the gridiron.

Clearly, Reggie White made his mark on the city of Green Bay and their fans, and on Sunday, the Packers honored him for those accomplishments. In a halftime ceremony, White's widow, Sara, and two children, Jeremy and Jecolia, were on hand for a video dedication and the unveiling of the number 92 along the upper wall in the north end zone at Lambeau Field.

White's number will never be worn again for the Green Bay Packers, which certainly puts him in some elite company. Only Don Hutson, Tony Canadeo, Bart Starr and Ray Nitschke have pre..

Notebook: Packers Can Pound The Ball

Back On Track
Many pundits said the Packers needed to emphasize Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green and the running game to solve the offense's woes.

The running game performed well in the first half as the Packers ran 17 times for 77 yards, and that led Green to take a positive from the 26-24 loss.

"I'm feeling better and better every week," said Green, who had 16 rushes for 54 yards. "Now we're kind of getting in a groove a little bit. We had some good runs, good solid runs. It was effective for the most part."

Head coach Mike Sherman said the team would have logged 35 carries if the score stayed close. But the offense faced a 19 to 7 deficit in the fourth quarter and had to abandon the running game.

"As the game played out," Green said, "we had to resort to the pass to get back in."

Running back Najeh Davenport gained 36 rushing yards, and the Packers finished with 116 yards on 30 carries.

Driver Plays Well, But Packers Still Miss Deep Threat

In the Packers' first game without Javon Walker, many observers questioned who would fill the No. 1 wide receiver role.

Donald Driver answered those queries on the game's first drive, catching a Brett Favre pass and outracing the Cleveland Browns' secondary down the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown.

"People are gonna say I'm not the number one guy," Driver said. "But I feel I've been the number one guy ever since I became a starter."

Driver finished with six catches for 105 yards, but the next two leading receivers were running backs, and their receptions came on short dump-offs.

Ahman Green had five catches for 45 yards and William Henderson had five for 27. Other than the Driver play, the Packers had few deep plays -- a specialty of Walker.

The Packers inability to stretch the field occurred because the Browns' defense did not allow it. The Browns lined up in a double zone scheme. That defense prevents the big plays but leaves the middl..

AP Story: Dilfer Leads Browns Past Packers 26-24

They lived up to Reggie White's legacy on the day his number was retired, playing with a menacing mix of passion, poise and precision.

Not the Green Bay Packers, the Cleveland Browns.

Trent Dilfer won for the first time in nine trips to Lambeau Field, guiding Cleveland over the mistake-prone Packers 26-24 for new coach Romeo Crennel's first win. Dilfer threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards and a game-icing 62-yarder to Steve Heiden with 1:50 remaining.

Dilfer, who lost six times as a starter at Green Bay, completed 21 of 32 passes for 336 yards -- the second-highest total of his career -- and three touchdowns. His 62-yarder to Heiden, who slipped a tackle by safety Mark Roman, made it 26-17, too much for the Packers to overcome even behind Brett Favre.

The Packers wanted desperately to honor White with a win. So did Dilfer, who like so many others, counted himself a friend of the "Minister of Defense," who died unexpectedly last ye..

TODAY: For only the fifth time in their 87-year history (1919-2005), the franchise will retire a number, officially taking Reggie White's 92 out of circulation in a halftime ceremony...Cleveland, which entered the NFL in 1950, makes only its second regular-season appearance at Lambeau Field, and third overall, including the 1965 NFL championship game...The Packers and Browns play the Lambeau opener, renewing a storied rivalry that includes Jim Brown's last NFL game (the 1965 NFL title contest). Green Bay's home opener also featured Cleveland in 1953, when Paul Brown's club pitched a 27-0 shutout in Milwaukee, also the first meeting in the all-time series.

Packers Face Ideal Opponent To Get Back On Track

No game this early in the season should be labeled as a "must win," but that's the kind of mindset the Packers need to take into their home opener with the Cleveland Browns this Sunday (3:15, CBS). It's a game they can and should win, especially in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field. It's a game they should win because they are catching the Browns at a very good time.

The Browns are similar to the Packers in the sense that they are a team going through a big transition. They have a new head coach in Romeo Crennel, the architect of the outstanding Patriots defenses that helped bring three Super Bowl trophies to New England. The Browns cleaned house, bringing in new coordinators (Maurice Carthon for the offense and Todd Grantham on defense) and 26 new players. This is a team still searching for its identity, going through an experimental phase to become familiar with new offensive and defensive schemes. Crennell brings a 3-4 defensive scheme from the Patriots and he's r..

Packers Prepare For Browns' 3-4 Defense

The Green Bay Packers will face a defensive challenge this Sunday as the Cleveland Browns employ a 3-4 defensive scheme used by only nine teams in the NFL.

"That's a huge deal as far our protection calls," quarterback Craig Nall said.

A 3-4 scheme lines up three down linemen and four linebackers. The system asks for defensive ends to emphasize stopping the run rather than rushing the passer.

Offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher will match up against pass rushing outside linebackers instead of defensive ends.

An active linebacking corps is the staple of the 3-4 defense. The Browns can blitz all four of them, send them all in pass coverage or mix and match on each play.

"There's more versatility out of a 3-4," Tauscher said.

Browns head coach Romeo Crennel brought that scheme with him from the New England Patriots where he served as defensive coordinator under head coach Bill Belichick from 2001 to 2004.

Earl Little Set To Face Former Team

As Packers safety Earl Little studied preseason film to prepare for Sunday's game versus the Cleveland Browns, he paid particular attention to No. 20, worn by running back Sultan McCullough.

"Some kid was wearing my jersey," Little said as he watched preseason game of the Browns versus the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears. "It was an eerie feeling."

On Sunday Little will suit up in Packers' Green and Gold against the team he played with from 1999-2004. His time with the Browns represents the pinnacle of his playing career. He racked up all 18 of his career interceptions with the Browns before they released him last March.

Expecting Little to spew venom, ripping his former team? Hardly. The eight-year-veteran has fond memories of his time in Cleveland.

"The organization took care of me," he said. "Mr. Lerner and the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland fans were good to me. I had my best years there."

Fans Can Play Video Game Against Ahman Green

If you ever wanted to compete against Packers running back Ahman Green, Tuesday is your chance to do so in the virtual world.

As part of the "Game With Fame" Session, Xbox gamers can challenge him in a game of Halo2 on September 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. (CST). Participants can also chat with him through a headset hooked up through Xbox Live.

Anyone with an Xbox hooked up to a television screen can play against Green. A gamer tag -- similar to an Instant Messenger screen name -- listed as "ahmanlive" will come across your Xbox and flash Green's name allowing you to play.

In the game Halo2, a genetically enhanced super soldier aims to prevent the destruction of mankind.

Other celebrities who have participated in the Xbox Live "Game with Fame" program include Ludacris, The Strokes, Hoobastank, Three Doors Down, Incubus and Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee.

Green ranks second on the all-time Packers' rushing list with 6,906 yards and has ..

Offensive Line Relies On Flanagan Now More Than Ever

Every day reporters gather around the locker of Packers center Mike Flanagan and ask him about his knees.

"I'm fine," he said. "I'm just tired of answering that question."

The health of Flanagan, a 2003 Pro Bowler who missed 13 games last year because of knee surgery designed to reduce recurring tendinitis, is of primary concern to the Packers.

The quarterback of the offensive line, he scans the alignment of the defenses as he marches out of the huddle. He then barks out the assignment and technique to the other linemen.

"He gets to the line and can change his calls on a dime," guard William Whitticker said. "He makes the right calls and tells us who we're going to block."

Flanagan also instructs them on how to block. With the 40-second play clock winding down, he yells a one-word code, which signifies the proper gap to attack or footwork to use.

Because the rookie Whitticker lines up to his immediate right and Adrian Klemm, a con..

Cornerbacks Weather Competition For Starting Position

An intense competition can bring out the best or worst in players. For the Packers cornerbacks, it has produced the former thus far into the season.

The Packers replaced Ahmad Carroll, the starting left cornerback during last Sunday's game, with Joey Thomas, and Carroll has responded positively to the demotion.

"A.C's taking it well," safety Earl Little said. "Both of them handled the situation well."

Carroll has concerned himself with trying to improve his production rather than worrying about his playing time.

"If I don't start another game this year and I get six interceptions, I'm happy," Carroll said. "I've just got to out there and make something happen."

Packers head coach Mike Sherman said Carroll will play the nickel cornerback position and cover the slot receiver. Although he will not start against the Cleveland Browns, Carroll will continue to see a lot of action.

"In our defense, nickelback is basically the starter," c..

Favre Remains Confident Behind New Offensive Line Starters

You don't play in the league for 15 years without an extraordinary ability to adapt to change. And quarterback Brett Favre did not bat an eye when Adrian Klemm and William Whitticker replace last year's departed starters, Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera, at guard on opening day of the 2005 season.

"I never thought about it," Favre said. "I didn't lose any sleep the night before."

Favre, however, likely did not sleep well after last Sunday's game. The Detroit Lions sacked him four times and hurried him on several other occasions.

"During the course of the game I got more pressure obviously than I had gotten not only against Detroit but really the past two years," he said. "It's been awhile since I think we had that much pressure. I can't say that made me play any different."

Much of that pressure was because the Lions have developed one of the NFL's best interior defensive lines. Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers came into his own last year, earning his fir..

Driver Leads Young Receivers From New Position

After a season-ending knee injury sidelined Pro Bowl wide receiver Javon Walker, you expected the leader of the wide receiver corps to deliver a passionate speech to elevate the mood of a disheartened team.

The 29-year-old Donald Driver, the eldest Green Bay Packers receiver, did nothing of the sort.

"I didn't have to say anything," Driver said. "Once we found out Javon was out for the reason, everyone picked themselves up. Everyone on their own said: 'this is what we need to do.'"

What they need to do is replace the 89 catches, 1,382 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns Walker accounted for last year. Driver has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and will play a major role in doing so.

"My expectations have always been high for Driver," head coach Mike Sherman said. "He's a key player on every down and distance."

Driver will replace Walker -- or at least his position. Formerly a split end, Driver becomes the flanker or the feature position amon..

Remmel: Packers vs Browns

Williams Memories Complement '65 Title Game In Browns Series

Any reflection upon the Packers' competitive history with the Cleveland Browns is likely to focus on a single game ... one now 40 years distant.

And understandably so. It was, after all, a time when they were mutually deciding the National Football League championship (Jan. 2, 1966) ... and in Lambeau Field, appropriately enough.

Plus, the Packers ultimately trudged from their snowy turf -- which had to be shoveled off by hand before the principals could take the field -- with a 23-12 victory on that occasion.

But there is at least one other game in the rivalry, to be renewed when the Ohioans visit "Lambeau" Sunday for Green Bay's regular-season home opener, that merits an extensive review.

Because of its record-breaking pyrotechnics, it deserves no less.

And because it dramatically showcased the dazzling talents of Travis Williams, one of the most gifted athlete..

Run Defense, Fresh Jackson Offer Reasons For Optimism

The Packers lost 17-3 to the Detroit Lions, but their stout run defense served as a silver lining.

"The defensive front as a whole did a nice job," head coach Mike Sherman said. "Going into the ball game I was so concerned about the fact [the Lions] were just going to pound the ball on us against our front."

A marked improvement from last year when they allowed 4.3 yards-a-carry, the Packers held the Lions to 3.3 yards-per-rush by playing with a good base and staying square to the line of scrimmage.

"We stayed in our gaps, played disciplined football," defensive tackle Grady Jackson said.

They limited Kevin Jones, the same back who ran for 156 yards in their last meeting, to 87 yards on 25 carries. He rushed for 902 yards in the last eight games of the 2004 season

"I have a lot of respect for Kevin Jones," Sherman said. "He was one of the best backs at the end of the season last year."

Against the Packers his longest run was seven..

Quick Starter: Thomas Earns Nod After One Week

During his high school career at Imperial (Calif.) High, his college career at UCLA or his three NFL years with the St. Louis Rams, had a team ever thrown linebacker Robert Thomas into the fire like the Green Bay Packers?

"Never," said Thomas, grinning at his ability to quickly mesh with his new team.

A week after joining the Packers, Thomas started at weakside linebacker against the Detroit Lions on Sunday and recorded four tackles.

"For the first time out of the blocks, he did a good job," head coach Mike Sherman said.

Thomas played an integral role in limiting a strong Lions running game to 3.3 yards-a-carry. Three of his tackles were solo. He stopped running back Kevin Jones for three yards and one yard up the middle in the first quarter and for three yards off left tackle in the fourth quarter.

In making the transition from the Rams defense to the Packers defense, he faced a steep learning curve. The Rams play more eight-man fronts an..

Letters To Majik

It's great to have the Majik Man back. What is your honest opinion on Aaron Rodgers, and was it a great draft pick for the Packers? Like I said it's good to have the Majik Man back and I wish you and your family the best. - Steve, Follansbee, W. Va.

Thanks, Steve. Aaron Rodgers has a lot of talent and a strong arm. But we really won't know how good he can be until we see him in real NFL game action for at least a couple of years.

What do you consider your biggest win as a Packer? As a fan, there were a lot of big wins in 1989, but a road win at San Francisco, where you scored a key TD on the ground, was my personal favorite. You were also the quarterback when we were regarded as the 'Cardiac Pack,' and if I'm not mistaken, the QB when Chris Berman coined the phrase 'Frozen Tundra.' Thank You! - Jim, Belleville, Mich.

Jim, the road win at San Francisco was probably the second biggest win in 1989. The biggest win in my opinion was the 'Inst..

Majik: Mistakes, Missed Opportunities Ruin Season Opener

Penalties. Turnovers. A potential TD pass overthrown slightly. A botched chip shot field goal attempt. Bad luck. These were the ingredients for a very disappointing opening day for the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. You can say the Packers beat themselves. At the same time, take nothing away from the Detroit Lions. They hung tough and cashed in with points at several key junctures. They played some great defense and held Green Bay's offense to a meager three points.

Still, this one really hurts. The Packers know deep down that this game was theirs for the taking and they couldn't get the job done. When you get flagged 14 times for 100 yards it's tough to win. One of those penalties nullified a beautiful 47-yard punt return by Antonio Chatman. Not only could the Packers have won this game, they would have had a leg up in the NFC North Division race because Chicago and Minnesota also lost. The sad exclamation point for the day was losing Javon Walker for the rest of the seaso..

Oft-Penalized Cornerback Meets With Sherman

Of the 18 penalties called on the Green Bay Packers during Sunday's 17-3 loss to the Detroit Lions, cornerback Ahmad Carroll committed four by himself.

Some of the referee's calls may have been dubious, but the miscues led Carroll to insist on a heart-to-heart meeting with head coach Mike Sherman on Monday. During the morning chat, the second-year cornerback apologized for his four penalties.

"I wanted to let him know that it wasn't falling on deaf ears about the penalties I was getting, Carroll said. "He made it clear that we can't have anyone out there getting penalties. That's going to hurt the team."

Sherman, who considered benching Carroll during Sunday's game, will announce the starters on Wednesday. The former first-round draft pick knows he will have to avoid those penalties to keep his job.

The play of Joey Thomas has intensified the competition. The starting cornerback headed into training camp, he was sidelined by calf and hip injuries f..

Packers' Receivers Look To Fill Javon Walker's Void

When wide receiver Javon Walker went down with a season-ending knee injury on Sunday, it meant other Packers wide receivers had to step up.

"We'll be fairly resilient," head coach Mike Sherman said. "This is an opportunity for Fergie and Murphy and Chatman to step forward."

Walker led Packers receivers with 89 receptions, 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Both coaches and players expressed confidence in the other recievers' ability to replace Walker's production.

"I hate for it to happen like this," Robert Ferguson said. "But I hope I get involved in the offense a little bit more."

The Packers likely will lean more heavily on the five-year veteran with 84 career catches. At 6-1, 210, Ferguson has a similar body type to Walker.

"Fergie for us this year has to step up and be that big play receiver," Sherman said. "We have to be able to count on him."

The Packers could look outside the organization to add depth.

Packers Become Their Own Worst Enemy

The Detroit Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers 17-3, but you could say the Packers beat themselves.

During the 2005 regular season opener, the Packers suffered 14 penalties, including four by cornerback Ahmad Carroll, for 100 yards. Brett Favre committed three turnovers, and punter B.J. Sander botched the hold on a field goal.

"All around, we did not play well tonight," said wide receiver Donald Driver, who led the team with 48 receiving yards. "When you have that many penalties, you are going to lose a game."

The Packers, however, answered several questions about the team, which arose during training camp.

Their special teams had allowed long punt and kick returns to the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots during the preseason, but they corralled 2004 Pro Bowl return specialist Eddie Drummond.

Totalling 41 combined return yards, he averaged two yards on six punt returns, and his longest kickoff return was 15 yards.

AP Story: Lions Defeat Packers 17-3

Brett Favre slumped over in the middle of the field after his third turnover of the day.

The three-time MVP, who will turn 36 next month, limped to his news conference about an hour later with gray in his hair and a scruffy beard.

"I'll probably feel worse (Monday), but I could play another game now," Favre said after two of his three turnovers led to 10 points in a game in which scoring was scarce, helping the Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 17-3. "Inside, it hurts the most."

The game marked the fewest points Green Bay scored with Favre as its starting quarterback.

Tampa Bay beat the Packers 31-3 on Sept. 13, 1992, two weeks before Favre began his record streak of starting 227 consecutive games, including the playoffs.

"We obviously have a ways to go offensively," Favre said. "But if you would've told me we would score three points, I would've said you were crazy."

Packers-Lions Press Box Notes

TODAY: Green Bay kicks off an 85th NFL season against one of its oldest rivals, the Lions. This marks Game No. 150 in the historic series...These teams open a season in Detroit for the first time since 1978, and only the second time overall...After sustaining a "basketball" sprain of his right ankle Sept. 1 at Tennessee, Brett Favre appeared on the team's injury report for the 43rd time during his consecutive-starts streak, which will reach 206 today (226 including playoffs)...Mike Sherman is tied with Mike Martz for the best division record (25-9, .735) among NFL head coaches since 2000. He's 8-2 vs. Detroit and including playoffs 6-1 vs. Steve Mariucci.

IRONMEN: This week marked one decade since the Baltimore Orioles' Cal Ripken surpassed the 2,130 consecutive starts by the New York Yankees' Lou Gehrig...While a handful of NFL players have started every game for their team's over a stretch of at least 13 years, Ripken and Gehrig are believed to be the only athletes i..

Majik: Ready Or Not, Packers Kick Off Season Against Lions

The season awaits now with mini-camps, holdouts, training camp and pre-season games all behind us. This year I'm excited to join Packers.com as a columnist, offering my insights on the Packers, their opponents and the NFL in general. Over the last few years I've become increasingly more involved with NFL analysis. It's been a great way to keep me connected to the game I love.

As the season kick-off approaches, there's still plenty of questions that must be answered if the Packers expect to get to the playoffs. To me, the biggest question mark is still the offensive line. I don't think anybody took over at either of the guard positions and let's face it - Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera left some big footprints to fill. There was so much experimentation this summer that the offensive line hasn't become a cohesive unit. They're still going to experiment heading into the season because the run blocking is not where it needs to be. I think that will have a huge impact on what this t..

Packers Set To Showcase Young Defensive Tackles

The Green Bay Packers' starting defensive tackles will have a youthful look during Sunday's regular season opener.

"We'll bring a lot enthusiasm and a lot of spirit," defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins said.

Either Jenkins or Corey Williams, both second-year players, will occupy seven-year veteran Cletidus Hunt's former spot on the interior alongside Grady Jackson. Head coach Mike Sherman has not announced the starters, but both Jenkins and Williams will receive repetitions at that position.

Jenkins, who attended Central Michigan University, started six games last year and brings more speed while Corey Williams weighs 313 pounds, 23 more than Jenkins, and holds up better against the run.

"Cullen Jenkins is quick, very explosive," defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila said. "He's quick enough he could even play on the outside."

Indeed the coaching staff tried the explosive 290-pounder at defensive end early in training camp. Then injuries to ..

Lions' Drummond To Test Packers' Special Teams

Filling the space between the offense's touchdowns, and the defense's sacks, special teams often serve as a time for viewers to forage through their refrigerator. But observers should sit tight on Sunday.

That unit, especially the kickoff and punt teams, could decide the outcome of the game between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.

Lions' returner Eddie Drummond made the Pro Bowl 2005. He returned two punt returns and two kickoff returns for touchdown despite missing five games with a shoulder injury.

"You don't face bad returners in this league. Every week, you're facing a good one," kicker Ryan Longwell said. "But Eddie Drummond's obviously the cream of the crop."

The Packers plan to keep Drummond off balance. They will not kick directly to him or away from him. They will send the ball right, left, short and long.

"We can keep him guessing and keep him off beat a little bit," Longwell said. "Hopefully the advantage is ours when th..

Preseason Work Readies Ahman Green For Regular Season

Running backs take a beating, and when you have a weapon at running back like Ahman Green you must monitor his repetitions carefully.

Although the Green Bay Packers did not want to wear Green down before the season begins, they feared too little work would leave him rusty and prone to fumbles.

Green received 32 touches (26 rushes and six receptions) this year -- six more touches than last year.

That total should give Green the necessary work to understand his reads and develop a rhythm with his offensive teammates without taking any tread off his tires.

"In Ahman's case, if he's getting 10 preseason carries a game, that's pretty good," running back Tony Fisher said. "Instead of wearing him down, it's just looping him up for the season."

Green's carries likely would have reached that magic number of 10 had he played in the final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. He did not dress for the game after missing the practice's leading u..

Football Provides Necessary Release For Favre

A reporter asked Brett Favre how his ankle felt.

"It's the least of mine and this team's worries," he said.

Indeed Favre has other concerns.

He is still trying to cope with Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed his hometown of Kiln, Miss. and displaced his entire family, but he has started using football as a helpful distraction.

Favre even said he had his best practice of the year on Wednesday.

"My focus and intensity was there," he said. "My decision making was good."

That performance contrasts to last week when he had difficulty concentrating on football. His mind was elsewhere, and his eyes carried a reddish tint after several days with little or no sleep.

"Last week there were days that I was there," Favre said. "But I wasn't there."

Now football has provided a necessary diversion.

"It makes me focus even harder because it gives me a release," he said.

Favre has learned how to play effe..

Notebook: Run Defense Prepares For Kevin Jones

Keeping Up With Jones
Much of the media attention has focused on the Detroit Lions' fleet of wide receivers, including Roy Williams, Mike Williams and Charles Rogers, but second year Kevin Jones serves as the offense's catalyst.

"He is the key to the offense," Lions quarterback Joey Harrington said. "He opens everything up for us."

The Packers will focus on stopping Jones, who gained 1,133 yards in just over a half of season play last year, by staying in their run lanes and filling any holes.

"We've got to stay disciplined," defensive tackle Grady Jackson said.

The defense must practice good discipline because of Jones' vision and cut back ability. He can start inside and bounce outside or vice versa. If the Packers overpursue, he will take advantage by hitting the open gap.

"He has great size and power, and he also has the ability to make great cuts against the grain," head coach Mike Sherman said. "If you're gap deficient, you..

Notebook: Giddy Cornerback Pushes For Starting Position

Feeling Fine
Cornerback Joey Thomas could not contain his exuberance in the locker room following Monday's practice.

"I'm feeling great," he said. "I'm all smiles from ear to ear."

His recovery from previous injuries had left him glowing.

Following his impressive play during organized team activities, he entered training camp as the starting left cornerback. Then calf and hip injuries sidelined him for three weeks of training camp, and Ahmad Carroll received the snaps as starter.

"I'm just getting back to where I was, coming into training camp," Thomas said. "As my health increases, the more comfortable I get, the more confident I get."

The Packers likely will not name their starting left cornerback until Sunday.

If Carroll lands the starting position, will Thomas remain content?

"No. I mean who would be happy if they're not the starter? I'm a competitor, and I expect the best out of myself," he said. "If yo..

Scheme, Hard Work Turn Lenon Into Preseason Star

Informed of his ranking as the team's leader in tackles and passes defended during the preseason, linebacker Paris Lenon responded with a quizzical look.

"Really?" He said. "I didn't know that."

Perhaps Lenon has posted 18 tackles and four passes defended (the latter tied with safety Nick Collins for the lead) because he has focused more on learning a role he loves in the Packers' new defense than his numbers.

"It's fast and physical," he said. "It's definitely a fun defense to play in. You get to fly around the field."

In that aggressive scheme, big-bodied defensive tackles like Grady Jackson primarily occupy blockers, leaving athletic linebackers free to roam from sideline-to-sideline. Defensive coordinator Jim Bates wants his linebackers to make quick pre-snap reads, determining what the offensive players will be doing based on their formation.

As much as Lenon likes the defense, his exact role remains up in the air. He has played midd..

Remmel: Packers vs Lions

Packers Rivalry With Lions Reaches New And Rare Plateau

The Packers' venerable rivalry with the Detroit Lions, the recipient of an asterisk in the National Football League Record & Fact Book, reaches a new and major plateau Sunday...officially.

From the NFL's perspective, they will be squaring off for the 150th time in a series which the league dates to 1930, the tenth year of its existence and a time when Herbert Clark Hoover occupied the White House.

At the top of the listing of the all-time, game-by-game results in the series, the R & FB notes, "RS (regular season): Packers lead series, 79-63-7."

At the bottom of said listing, the asterisk appears, with the notation: "Franchise in Portsmouth prior to 1934 and known as the Spartans."

The NFL's official tome does not mention the Spartans' departure from Portsmouth (Ohio) in that tabulation but does explain, in the "Chronology of Professional Football" elsewhere in the book, that in..

Notebook: Grady Jackson Is 'Ready To Go'

Game-Ready Grady
Grady Jackson only practiced for a week during training camp and played in only one preseason game, but the 345-pounder feels very prepared to take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

"I'm ready to go," he said. "No doubt about it."

Jackson made three solo tackles in just more than a quarter of action against the Tennessee Titans. That is an impressive sum especially in the Packers' new defense, which asks their interior linemen to occupy offensive linemen and free up the linebackers to make plays.

Jackson said that role will be right up his alley.

"That's all I do is take up two blocks," he said. "They call me a block eater."

The Packers plan to keep Jackson and the other defensive linemen fresh by rotating them more frequently this year. He estimates he will play 30 to 35 snaps a game.

"It's not going to be like last year, taking 60 reps," he said.

Those rotating linemen will be a young bunch. As..

New Linebacker Tries To Master Scheme Quickly

Linebacker Robert Thomas' Labor Day weekend became quite labor intensive.

"We've been working him around the clock," head coach Mike Sherman said.

After the Green Bay Packers traded cornerback Chris Johnson to the St. Louis Rams for his services, Thomas arrived in Green Bay, Wis. on Sunday and studied his new playbook at Lambeau Field until 11 p.m. He spent all of Monday watching film before practicing with the team at 6:15 p.m.

The Packers want him to learn the defense quickly because they view him as an integral part of the team.

His ability to play several positions will make a versatile defense even more so. Fellow linebackers Roy Manning and Paris Lenon spent time at each linebacker position during training camp while Na'il Diggs played both outside spots before injuring his knee.

"I played all three positions in St. Louis," Thomas said. "I'm pretty aware of each."

Sherman said he will play the middle or weakside linebacker.

Packers Sign Autographs To Benefit Hurricane Victims

The Green Bay Packers may have just defeated the Tennessee Titans 21-17, but long snapper Rob Davis felt a lump in his heart. Worried about the devestation inflicted by Hurricane Katrina, he went through the locker room, looking for volunteers to aid the relief effort.

"We just wanted to make sure we had a presence from the Packers," Davis said. "We're trying to help out as best as we can."

The Packers helped out indeed.

In conjunction with the American Red Cross, several Packers players signed autographs on Sunday at Bay Park Square Mall in Green Bay, Wis., raising over $16,000 in just two hours to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Any monetary contribution entitled patrons to an autograph on one item. For a $100 donation, they could visit each of the three autograph tables. They were also encouraged to donate blood at the Red Cross blood drive in the mall.

By 12:30p.m., Red Cross officials estimated 500 people had already arrived..

Talented Youth Allows Packers To Cut Name Players

The Green Bay Packers announced their final 53-man roster on Saturday, and the process involved cutting some effective players and trading for one more.

"We released a lot of guys that had done some things with Green Bay," general manager Ted Thompson said. "This is the most difficult day anyone has in the National Football League."

Those difficult cuts involved two players many had projected as starters before training camp began -- defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt and linebacker Ray Thompson.

Hunt's release had less to do with his aching knees and shoulder, which limited him during much of a training camp, and more to do with the potential of other defensive linemen on the roster.

"He didn't have any problems with his knees during the game and he didn't have problems after the game," Thompson said. "Some of those young guys at defensive tackle played well. We made the decision based on that."

Those young guys include second-year defensive ..

Hutson Jersey To Preserve Family's Legacy

When Daniel Flagstad combed through a trunk of old uniforms during Packers training camp in 1946, it became an excavation into football's annals.

Flagstad stopped digging when he unearthed the navy blue jersey with yellow on the shoulders of Packers great Don Hutson.

"I came across [number] 14, and I didn't go any farther," Flagstad said. "I knew 14 was something very, very special."

Flagstad donated that jersey to the Packers Hall of Fame on Friday. The Hall of Fame will prominently display the jersey in honor of his parents, Melvin and Helen Flagstad, former operators of Rockwood Lodge, the Packers' summer training camp from 1946 to 1949.

"This is so emotional to me," Flagstad, 68, said. "Anything in memory of my parents is very, very important."

Because of his family's involvement, Daniel spent a great deal of time with the team. During that summer of 1946, he helped out the equipment staff with various chores, and Packers equipment man..

Packers' Second Half Play Leads To Win

If the Green Bay Packers can build on the momentum from the second half of the last preseason game, they will have a strong regular season.

The Packers scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Tennessee Titans 21-17. The much-maligned defense allowed 107 yards, six first downs and zero points during that period.

Neither the offense nor the defense produced that way in the first half. The game started on a terrible note for the Packers faithful. The Packers went three-and-out on their first series, and defensive end Antwan Odom hammered Favre to force a fumble on third down.

That fumble gave the Titans the ball on the 14-yard-line and led to running back Chris Brown's a five-yard touchdown run.

Favre took a beating, including a leg whip from defensive tackle Rien Long that sent him hobbling to sideline.

But much like the rest of the team, he rebounded. Following an 0-for-3 start and that Odom hit, which forced him out of..

AP Story: Packers Defeat Titans 21-17

Mike Sherman is certain his Green Bay Packers aren't ready for the regular season. For Jeff Fisher and his young Tennessee Titans, go ahead and bring on the opener.

Craig Nall tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Walt Williams early in the fourth quarter, and Mike Hawkins intercepted a pass in the end zone with 2:26 left as Green Bay beat Tennessee 21-17.

The Packers (2-2) trailed 17-10 at halftime, but they rallied to snap a two-game losing streak with three interceptions in the second half. They helped Green Bay overcome two turnovers, three sacks allowed and 13 penalties for 121 yards.

"We have a long way to go," Sherman said. "As I said, ... we're going to be a work in progress, and it doesn't stop at the end of the preseason. It's going to have to continue. ... Hopefully, we'll make some improvement."

The Packers topped their point total through the first three preseason games, having come into this game with a league-low 20.

"We're st..

AP Story: Packers' Team Plane Brings Supplies To South

For more information on how you can help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, please visit Favre's official Web site, <a href="http://www.officialbrettfavre.com/index.php?option=content&task=section&id=1&Itemid=2"target=new"">www.OfficialBrettFavre.com.

*******

The Green Bay Packers flew to Nashville for their final preseason game -- but only after loading the team airplane with generators and other emergency supplies to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Quarterback Brett Favre was among the Packers with relatives and friends in the Gulf Coast region that has been devastated by the hurricane.

Favre had the blessing of coach Mike Sherman to drive a truck with supplies to Hattiesburg, Miss., where his wife and children were at home, after the team got to Nashville. But with many of the roads in Mississippi impassable and the airports closed, Favre reconsidered.

For now, "what I've done is try to get the word out," he said.
