Pro Game Slows Down For Rookie Collins

A reporter asked Nick Collins if Sunday's performance against the Cincinnati Bengals was his best game.

A man of few words, Collins responded with a smile.

"You could say that," he said.

The rookie free safety collected four tackles and two passes defended, but he made his presence known on back-to-back plays against Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson in the middle of the second quarter. He decleated Johnson to force an incompletion on 2nd-and-12. On 3rd-and-12 he read Johnson's route and broke on the ball to deflect the pass.

"Nick Collins really had a heck of a ballgame," Head Coach Mike Sherman said.

On the first play, he perfectly timed his pass breakup, launching himself at Johnson as Carson Palmer's pass arrived.

"I made a great hit," he said.

On third down he read Palmer's eyes and jumped Johnson's curl route. He should have had an interception, but the ball went through his arms. Regardless he relied on his knowl..

Notebook: Ferguson Nears Return To Action

Quote Of The Day
Wide receiver Robert Ferguson eagerly beckoned reporters to listen to his self-proclaimed quote of the day.

"I guarantee you can save a lot of money if you switch over to Geico," he said.

That facetious quote was not the only nugget of information Ferguson provided. He said he could return from his sprained knee ligament suffered on Oct. 23 sooner rather than later.

"There's a strong possibility I'll come back this weekend," he said. "I'm feeling great."

Ferguson injured his lateral collateral ligament against the Minnesota Vikings when he caught a 44-yard pass off a play-action-fake in the second quarter. While maintaining possession of the ball, he crumpled to the turf.

Ferguson still must improve the range of motion in his injured leg, but the recovery process has moved along much faster than anticipated. The original prognosis called for him to miss two to four weeks. He has become closer to 100 percent thr..

Packers Contain Bengals' Weapons But Commit Too Many Turnovers

During the week leading up to the Cincinnati Bengals game, reporters asked Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman for his first impressions of his opponent. He mentioned their skill at forcing turnovers.

Sherman's comments proved prophetic.

The Bengals, who entered the game with an NFL-best plus-16 turnover margin and 15 interceptions, picked off Brett Favre five times Sunday, and those turnovers turned out to be the difference in the Bengals' 21-14 win.

Even after Favre amassed a personal record number of interceptions during a regular season game, the Packers still had a chance. Favre, who passed former quarterback John Elway for second all-time in passing attempts and passing yards, nearly pulled off the improbable comeback.

The Packers' offense received the ball at their own 10-yard-line with 56 seconds left. A defensive pass interference against Bengals safety Ifeanyi Ohalete, covering wide receiver Andrae Thurman, netted 48 yards. Then Fa..

AP Story: Farve Almost Pulls Out Win

No way Brett Favre will forget this one.

He threw five interceptions, something he'd never done in the regular season. He had a fan steal the ball from his hand during a futile last-minute drive, something he'd never seen before.

And his illegal forward pass let the Cincinnati Bengals hold on for a 21-14 victory that left the Green Bay Packers quarterback lying motionless on the field, exhausted and overwhelmed by it all.

"I said to myself, 'This is way too difficult week-in and week-out.' It's hard to make a living that way each week,"' Favre said.

This one was as tough as any during his 13-year career.

Facing the team that jump-started his career with a 1992 comeback blurred by time, Favre nearly overcame his five interceptions and an unexpected interruption that helped Cincinnati (6-2) hold on.
Backed up on their 5-yard line with 56 seconds left, the Packers got a break with a 48-yard pass interference penalty. Cincinnati's or..

Packers-Bengals Press Box Notes

TODAY: Faced with their most significant adversity in 14 years, the Packers bid for a key victory against a tough opponent on the road...While the Packers lost two more offensive starters Sunday at Minnesota (RB Ahman Green and WR Robert Ferguson), today they hope to return Pro Bowl center Mike Flanagan...The contest features two of the league's youngest teams. Each club's roster averages 26.3 years...The Packers, who have several connections to the state of Ohio, make their debut at Paul Brown Stadium. It's Green Bay's first trip to the city since 1998, when Fritz Shurmur's defense rattled Neil O'Donnell in a 13-6 win at Cinergy Field...Brett Favre will play a regular-season game in his 40th stadium. Of those 40, 14 are either no longer standing or no longer in use by the NFL, including Cinergy Field/Riverfront Stadium.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR TODAY -

Angry, Hungry Bengals Await Struggling Packers

They're angry and they're hungry. The multi-talented Cincinnati Bengals are not in a very good mood this week despite their 5-2 record which leads the NFL's AFC North division. Last Sunday the tough Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Bengals. Pittsburgh put a hurting on them, shutting down Carson Palmer by holding him to 227 passing yards and forcing him into a pair of picks. Pittsburgh also limited running back Rudi Johnson to 65 yards. So the Bengals see their matchup with the Green Bay Packers as an opportunity to get back on track. That's the unenviable assignment facing the Pack when they head into Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon.

Since Marvin Lewis came over from the Ravens as the Bengals' head coach, you can just tell that this Cincinnati team bought into his philosophies and game strategies. Without question, he's a players' coach, and the players respect him a great deal as a leader and as a disciplinarian. He and his staff have done a great job in turning this team around..

Pro Shop Sells More Than 200,000 Pink Hats

Go to any public place in Wisconsin, and chances are you will see someone wearing a pink Packers hat.

"We thought the campaign would be popular," said Rich Steffen, sales vice president for American Family Insurance. "Instead it proved to be phenomenal."

Indeed the Green Bay Packers and AFI announced on Friday that they sold more than 200,000 pink baseball caps and raised more than $1 million for breast cancer.

The totals far exceeded expectations. The goal was to raise $100,000, and the Packers Pro Shop ordered the hats in units of 20,000.

"It's been incredible how quickly we sold out of each shipment," said Kate Hogan, Packers director of retail operations.

Chatman: Short In Stature, Big On Skills

Go ahead. Tell him he's too short, that at 5-9, 183 pounds Antonio Chatman does not have the requisite size to play with the big boys in the NFL. He's heard that slight ever since he went undrafted out of the University Cincinnati and used it as motivation ever since.

"That's my drive," Chatman said. "I always keep a chip on my shoulder."

The third-year wide receiver will have a chance to prove his abilities as he sees the most extensive action of his career Sunday versus the Cincinnati Bengals. With Robert Ferguson (knee) injured, Chatman will serve as the No. 2 wide receiver on Sunday.

"It's his turn to show what he can do," wide receiver Craig Bragg said.

Chatman will show his diminutive stature has some advantages. Defenders have trouble finding him through a wall of blockers. They also have trouble putting their hands on Chatman, a small target with a low center of gravity, to bring him down.

Former Bengals Safety Among Those Looking Forward To Sunday's Game

Sunday's game versus the Cincinnati Bengals will carry special significance for several Green Bay Packers players.

The Bengals drafted safety Mark Roman in the second round of the 2000 draft, and he spent the first four years of his career with the team.

"It's always meaningful. It's not that I'm mad at the organization or anything like that," Roman said. "Anytime you're performing against your former team in this business, you want to play well against them."

Roman started 27 games for the Bengals. His best year came during 2003 when he started all 16 games and recorded 83 tackles. An unrestricted free agent, Roman signed the next year with the Packers because he liked the coaching staff and the slower pace of Green Bay, Wis.

"I wasn't disgruntled. I don't feel sideways towards anyone in the organization," he said. "I like being in Green Bay. They treat you real good over here. The fans, the organization, the team -- everybody is very close knit o..

Longwell And Sander Iron Out Kinks In Kicking Game

As he pantomimed swinging a golf club, kicker Ryan Longwell and punter B.J. Sander showed they remain a cohesive special teams duo.

Longwell interrupted one of Sander's locker room interviews with a pretend chip shot to signal his golf clubs had arrived through the mail.

Although Longwell cited poor holds for part of the reason for his misses against the Minnesota Vikings, the golfing buddies and locker room neighbors remain a compatible pairing. It just happens that Longwell, the kind of perfectionist coaches look for in a kicker, is very demanding when it comes to his holds.

"I hate to say Ryan's too high maintenance because he is and has been a very reliable kicker for us," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said.

A soccer-style kicker, he wants the ball tilted forward and to the right so that he can nail the ball at its sweet spot.

"It's a job of perfection," Longwell said. "(The kicking game) is not an A, B, C grade. It's a pass or fail...

Former Giants President Ensured Packers' Success

When New York Giants President and Co-Chief Executive Officer Wellington Mara passed away at age 89 on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers lost a friend and someone with close ties to their organization.

"The Packers franchise is indelibly linked to the New York Giants on so many levels," said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John Jones.

According to President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Harlan, Mara was a college classmate of Vince Lombardi's at Fordham University. He also recommended Lombardi, who served as Giants offensive coordinator, as head coach to Packers team president Dominic Olejniczak in 1959.

Mara joined the Giants organization 80 years ago when his father Timothy J. Mara bought the team. He served the team in a multitude of capacities. Starting as a Giants ballboy at age nine, he became co-owner of the team with his older brother Jack at the age of 14 in 1930. He ran the day-to-day operations of the club until several years ..

Brett Favre Copes With 1-5 Record

Leading a 1-5 team presents a foreign obstacle for Brett Favre. The 15-year-veteran has never began the season with such a deficit or had a losing season as a starting NFL quarterback.

"It's new to me," Favre said. "I have to encourage myself sometimes ... Wednesday practices are not the most fun practices, but when you're 1-5 they really become difficult."

The most difficult time for Favre followed the 32-29 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week Four, which dropped the Packers to 0-4. Favre led a furious fourth quarter comeback from 32-13, but it was not enough.

A quarterback with enormous expectations sat at his locker after the game, trying to come to grips with the fact that he could not lead his team to victory.

"I was as disappointed as I've ever been," he said. "It makes me start questioning, 'Do I still have that magic?'"

Favre may have questioned his skills, but no one else does. His opponents know he can produce points in a hurry..

Packers' Secondary To Match Up With Talkative Wide Receiver

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson began his Wednesday conference call with the media by asking for Packers cornerback Al Harris.

"Is Al anywhere in there?" he asked. "Can you guys go get him?"

The Bengals-Packers game may be four days away, but Johnson already has stoked the flames of the matchup. He has Harris posted on his infamous checklist -- which lists the No. 1 cornerback of the team he faces each week -- in his locker. If he outplays that cornerback, he checks him off. Going into Week 7, he has checked off every cornerback this season.

Harris, however, declined to rebut.

"I just try to do the job to the best of my abilities," he said. "I don't get too wrapped up in all of that."

Johnson has become known for trash talking his opponents between plays, but such on-field talk does not distract Harris. The eight-year veteran sometimes can focus so intently on his role that he does not follow what happens on the Packers' off..

Thurman, Williams Happily Return To Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers re-signed running back Walt Williams and wide receiver Andrae Thurman on Tuesday, creating a special reunion for both and a splendid birthday for the latter.

"It's a crazy birthday present," said Thurman, who turned 25 on Tuesday. He chatted on his cell phone while making the nine-hour drive from Nashville, Tenn. to Green Bay, Wis. "It's a really good feeling."

Williams received the news of the signing while working out at Brusly (La.) High School.

"It was just a blessing," he said. "I enjoyed my time here and a good relationship with my teammates, coaches and I liked the area ... I was always interested in returning."

Through lifting weights and running at his former high school, Williams, released from the Packers on Sept. 3, said he is in great shape but must adjust his body to the pounding a running back takes on the playing field.

"The main thing about football is the contact," he said.

Williams' mental ..

Rookies Underwood and Poppinga Make Waves

With second-round draft pick Nick Collins and seventh-round draft pick William Whitticker already starting, two more rookies of a promising draft class, Marviel Underwood and Brady Poppinga, saw action on Sunday.

When Collins, the starting free safety, left Sunday's game in the third quarter with a thigh contusion, Underwood, a fourth-round draft pick, assumed his role. Underwood had already been filling in for No. 3 safety Earl Little (hamstring) on some passing downs packages and playing on special teams.

"He showed flashes that he could play this game and be good at it," said starting strong safety Mark Roman.

Roman said that he did not need to provide extra instruction to the rookie who had two tackles during the game.

"He's a smart guy who knows what to do and when to do it," Roman said before cracking a joke. "Even if I tried, he was so tired he wasn't going to listen anyway."

Underwood was tired for good reason. According to estima..

Remmel: Packers vs Bengals

INFREQUENT OPPONENTS...BENGALS HAVE SHARED SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS IN PACKERS HISTORY

The Packers are not nearly as well-acquainted with the Cincinnati Bengals as they are with, say, the Chicago Bears...or the Minnesota Vikings...or, for that matter, the New York Giants...

In fact, their engagement in Cincinnati's Paul Brown Stadium Sunday will find them meeting in a regular season game for only the 10th time - and for the first time since 1998.

Yet, historically, they have shared one of the most somber and meaningful moments in the Green and Gold's distinguished annals.

And, beyond that, the rivalry has been highlighted by one of the most significant developments in the Packers' storied history-the impromptu launching of quarterback Brett Favre on a Hall of Fame career.

Their very first encounter, in a preseason contest, occurred two days after the passing of the Packers' legendary former coach, Vince Lombardi, who had succumbed to c..

Majik: Vikings' Second Half Surge Shatters Packers' Hopes

The Packers were hoping to capitalize on their Bye Week rest. They were hoping to take advantage of a Minnesota Vikings team in disarray on and off the field. They were hoping to build on their lopsided victory against the New Orleans Saints. They needed this win and they were bound and determined to get it. Instead, they let a big one get away, and now their climb back to respectability -- let alone playoff contention -- is daunting.

Did the Vikings want this game more than the Packers? I don't think so. The Packers played extremely hard, but the Vikings simply outplayed the Packers in the second half. What a shame. In the first half, the Packers had things going their way behind a masterful performance by Brett Favre and an opportunistic defense that sacked Daunte Culpepper four times. Favre was nearly perfect in his play, and the offense moved the ball extremely well, scoring 17 unanswered points and dominating the clock.

Then came the second half, and everything..

Letters To Majik

Are the Packers simply unlucky or are the players not as conditioned as well as they should be? It seems we have more injuries to players than other teams. - Jeannie, Albany, WI

Jeannie, injuries are simply bad luck most of the time. Take it from me, I know. It has nothing to do with how tough you are or how much pain you can tolerate.

Don, are we going to see Aaron Rodgers if the Packer lose a few more games? - Blake, Kingsville, Canada

Blake, no you will not see Aaron Rogers if the Packers lose a few more games. Brett has been playing extremely well. You can't put a guy like Brett on the bench just because the team is losing. He's their only chance for winning.

Hi Majik! The Packers offense looked pretty good in their loss to the Vikings. The receivers looked like they were really going after the ball! But then the defense gave up all those points in the second half. What happened? The defense looked tired. Is the Packer..

Fisher To Receive Starting Nod

He may have caught 38 passes for 277 yards last year, but don't tell Tony Fisher he is just a third down back who catches passes out of the backfield.

"They're so used to seeing me in passing situations. They forgot that when I was a rookie I was able to run the ball as well," Fisher said. "It's an opportunity for me."

The opportunity knocks for the No. 3 running back because Ahman Green will miss the rest of the season with a torn quadriceps tendon, and No. 2 running back Najeh Davenport broke his ankle on Oct. 9.

Fisher, a four-year veteran, who has 727 career rushing yards, will make his second career start on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"A No. 3 guy with the skills of Fish -- that's unheard of in this league," fullback William Henderson said.

Fisher's skills differ a bit from Davenport and Green. The 250-pound Davenport bulldozes through defenders, the 6-1, 222-pound Fisher slashes his way through the hole, and Green serves ..

Wide Receivers Look To Step Up In Ferguson's Absence

With Robert Ferguson out two to four weeks with a sprained knee, the other Green Bay Packers wide receivers will have to rise to the occasion.

"We're all filling each other's shoes now," wide receiver Donald Driver said. "It's a lot of pressure on all of us."

Jamal Jones will assume some of that responsibility. The first-year player becomes the No. 3 receiver -- part of his rapid rise up the depth chart. The Packers waived him on Sept. 3, signed him to the practice squad on Sept. 13 and signed him to the active roster on Oct. 4.

"I know the plays," he said. "I'm ready."

Jones has not caught a pass this season but has played effectively on special teams. He returned three kickoffs for 55 yards on Sunday before a fumbling a fourth-quarter kick, which defensive lineman Kenny Peterson recovered. On that play, he saw the seam, but the outside defender turned him around. In that position he could not brace himself, and tight end Richard Owens forced a fu..

Green To Miss The Rest Of The Season

The 1-5 Packers received another dose of bad news Monday. Five-time Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green will miss the rest of the season after rupturing a tendon in his quadriceps.

"It's a significant injury," head coach Mike Sherman said. "This one is significant enough to keep him out the rest of the season."

Green will undergo surgery soon, but Sherman did not know the recovery period. He remained cautiously optimistic that he could return next season.

"My understanding is that he'd be ready to go next year," he said. "But I can't validate that."

Green injured his thigh during Sunday's game when he took a handoff off right tackle and was tackled by Minnesota Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson. Green aggravated the injury, which had forced him to miss the last game.

He finished the day having rushed for 49 yards on 16 carries in the game and for 255 yards on the year.

Without Green and Najeh Davenport (season-ending ankle injury),..

Packers Falter During Second Half

The Green Bay Packers' 23-20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings was a tale of two halves.

The Packers, forced to play from behind for much of the season, stormed out to a 17-0 halftime lead but scored only three points in the second half. The Vikings, shut out in the first half, scored on every second half possession, including Paul Edinger's game-winning 56-yard field goal as time expired.

"It felt good off my foot," Edinger said. "I knew I had the distance. I just looked up to make sure it was fine where I needed it to fly, and it was right down the middle."

Edinger's field goal, which set a personal and Vikings record for distance, culminated a three-play, 26-yard drive. That score came 24 seconds after Brett Favre led an 11-play, 56-yard fourth quarter drive in 2:46, which tied the game at 20 on a Ryan Longwell 39-yard field goal.

Favre looked very sharp, completing 28-of-36 passes for 315 yards, especially during the first half when he misfired on ..

AP Story: Vikings Edge Packers

Nothing was going right for Minnesota until coach Mike Tice tried a little negative reinforcement in the locker room.

Prodded by Tice's stern halftime speech, the Vikings came back from a 17-0 deficit in the third quarter to beat Green Bay 23-20. Paul Edinger kicked a career-long 56-yard field goal as time ran out, lifting momentum-starved Minnesota past the Packers.

"We just needed a win, no matter how we got it," said Marcus Robinson, who caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Daunte Culpepper late in the third quarter to spur the comeback. "But we're still 2-4."

Such is life in the NFC North, where Minnesota is still only one game out of first place despite an awful start to the season -- and even Green Bay (1-5) remains in the race.

After losing their last two games by a combined 58-13 score and allegations of sexual misconduct by several players on a boat party emerging earlier this month, the Vikings appeared headed for another ugly defeat..

Sharper, a two-time Pro Bowl safety, spent his first eight seasons (1997-2004) in Green Bay...The Packers have won eight of their last nine following bye weeks. Under Mike Sherman, they've won four in a row. This marks the third straight year the league slated Minnesota as the Packers' first foe out of the bye.

Children, Families Enjoy Halloween-Themed 'Spooktacular Fun'

Lambeau Field has traditionally served as a scary place for opposing NFL teams to play.

On Saturday it served as frightening place for children of all ages as the Green Bay Packers hosted their third annual Halloween-themed "Spooktacular Fun" from 10am. to 4p.m.

The Lambeau Field Atrium featured ghoulish displays of witches, werewolves, ghosts and Frankensteins. An estimated 7,000 people attended the free event, and many arrived in their Halloween gear.

"It's fun, seeing all the kids dressed up," said Dymond, 13, of Green Bay, Wis., who cited a Cinderella costume as her favorite.

The event included four face painting stations where spiders and bats were the most requested drawings. At four craft stations, children could contort black pipe cleaners and glue googly eyes to make spiders. They also could pick out a pumpkin from a patch and create their own design with magic marker.

Packers-Vikings Has Become A Rivalry For The Ages

As the Green Bay Packers prepared for their first game of the season against the Detroit Lions, it triggered a question in the mind of inquisitive rookie linebacker Brady Poppinga. He asked veteran linebacker Paris Lenon about the team's most bitter NFC North rival.

"It's the Vikings," Lenon said.

The Packers lead the all-time regular season series 44-42-1, but the games versus Sunday's opponent have become more intense with each passing year.

"The rivalry has really heated up," Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice said.

Last year Brett Favre led a 76-yard drive with 1:35 remaining to set up a game-winning 29-yard Ryan Longwell field goal. That 34-31 Christmas Eve win clinched the NFC North title for the Packers.

Poppinga remembers watching the game on television while hanging out in California with his in-laws. He saw early parts of it before flipping back to see Longwell's dramatic field goal.
Scheme And Hustle Bolster Packers' Run Defense

Early in training camp Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates cited stopping the run and eliminating long gains as a goal, and he has made that objective clear to his players through the course of the season.

"Just about every play, he's yelling ... He wants 11 people to the ball," defensive tackle Corey Williams said. "He keeps stressing it."

That encouragement has paid off. After allowing 4.6 yards-a-carry last year, the Packers have allowed 3.3 in 2005, which is tied for third best in the NFL.

"Our defense has made significant progress," Head Coach Mike Sherman said. "The biggest thing I'm proud of is the fact that we haven't given up explosive runs."

Running backs usually gash for long gains by breaking a series of tackles but have not had much success against the Packers' run defenders. Working on bringing ballcarriers down, however, can prove difficult. Like most NFL teams, the Packers rarely tackle during practice to minimize their wear and..

Injured Davenport Returns To Locker Room

As he hobbled into the locker room on crutches for the first time on Thursday since suffering a season-ending ankle injury, running back Najeh Davenport was all smiles, talking and joking with several players including fullback Vonta Leach.

Instead of assuming a "woe is me" attitude, Davenport has taken the injury in stride.

"That's life," he said. "That's how people get down. They start thinking about stuff they can't control."

If his doctors decide to remove his cast on Friday, Davenport could start rehabilitation the same day. If the cast stays on, that process will wait until Monday.

Davenport's ankle buckled when New Orleans Saints linebacker Courtney Watson tackled him following a two-yard-gain with 2:56 remaining in the second quarter of the Oct. 9th game. He sustained ligament damage and a couple of fractures to his lower fibula, and doctors inserted pins and a screw to stabilize it.

"Hopefully if everything goes well," he said, ..

Packers' Offensive Line Jells Despite Flanagan's Injury

During the week of practice prior to the Carolina Panthers game, center Mike Flanagan gutted it out despite a painful hernia injury suffered earlier in the season. But even someone as tough as Flanagan knew the severity of his injury. He told his backup, Scott Wells, to be ready just in case.

"I don't know how long I'll be able to go," Flanagan told him.

Wells has prepared himself to be the starting center this week as well. The Packers have listed Flanagan as questionable, and he has not practiced this week.

Whenever Flanagan does return to action -- whether it's this week or not -- he will start ahead of Wells.

"Mike Flanagan is a more experienced center," head coach Mike Sherman said. "In my mind he still is a Pro Bowl-caliber center."

The offensive line has not surrendered a sack in the seven quarters since Wells replaced Flanagan in the first quarter of the Panthers game. Some observers have suggested that injuries have caught up to ..

Packers-Vikings Monday Night Game On Nov. 21 To Serve As Collection Date For 'Toys For Tots'

Each year, Lambeau Field serves as a collection point for the 'Toys for Tots' campaign.

This year's collection date has been set for Monday, November 21, prior to the Packers-Vikings game.

Members of the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves will collect new, unwrapped toys, which are given to children in need during the holiday season.

Additionally, monetary donations are collected and used to purchase toys for a specific age group that may not have received an ample supply through donations.

The goal of the program is to deliver a message of hope to a needy youngster through a new toy. Through the years, thousands of toys have been collected and distributed to area youngsters.

Maturing Carroll Readies Himself For Vikings' Passing Attack

The Green Bay Packers prepare to face a potentially potent yet Randy Moss-less Minnesota Vikings offense. A year ago such an offense could have picked on oft-penalized Packers cornerback Ahmad Carroll, but the Vikings may be well-advised against doing so this year.

"Ahmad's doing a great job," cornerback Al Harris said. "He's real conscious of the penalties. He works on it at practice, and you can see that on gameday."

After committing 11 penalties during his 14 games last year and four against the Detroit Lions in Week One of this season, he has been flagged just once. He also has racked up one of the secondary's three interceptions.

Head coach Mike Sherman said the second-year player has made progress but wants to see more consistency before praising him lavishly.

"He's close. I don't want to jump out there just yet," he said. "He has to show it week in and week out."

Because Carroll has played effectively during the last three weeks, Sh..

Metrodome Presents Difficult Test For Favre

Brett Favre may be in the midst of a sizzling two-game stretch, but he faces an old nemesis on Sunday -- the Metrodome.

"The environment offers a lot of challenges," Favre said. "Until you're actually out there yourself, it's hard to imagine."

Known for playing well in the chilling cold, Favre has won 136 games during his career but has only a 15-22 record in domes, including a 4-9 record at the raucous Metrodome where 64,121 screaming fans can make life miserable for an opposing team.

"That crowd, that stadium is very loud, as loud as any place we've ever been," head coach Mike Sherman said.

Crowd noise really can become an issue if the Packers fall behind or have difficulty running the football. When the Packers have to pass the ball a lot, the offensive linemen have trouble hearing Favre's cadence and audibles. This can lead to miscommunication, false start penalties and the quick Minnesota Vikings' defenders beating them off the snap of the bal..

Packers Team With Big Brothers Big Sisters For 'Hometown Huddle'

The Green Bay Packers took part in the sixth annual "Hometown Huddle," an NFL-wide day of community service by setting up a designated Big Brothers Big Sisters seating area and bowling with the mentors and children on Tuesday.

Packers' players Vonta Leach, Aaron Rodgers, Nick Collins, Zac Woodfin, Corey Williams and Patrick Dendy participated along with more than 50 people from Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"I like doing these events. I love kids," said Rodgers, who hopes to set up a foundation one day and still hangs out with his personal cyclist from training camp. "There are a lot of kids out there who don't have a good father figure. If I can make an impact on just one kid with the way I play and what I do off the field, to me that's success."

The players began by arranging furniture in the Kohl's wing of Bay Park Square Mall in Ashwaubenon, Wis. Players carried a Big Brothers Big Sisters sign and four plush chairs to a high-traffic area of the mall. The tw..

Remmel: Packers vs Vikings

FREEMAN'S ASTONISHING 2000 RECEPTION MOST CREATIVE PLAY IN SERIES

According to Mike Eayrs, the Packers' highly precise director of research and development, there are approximately 150 plays in the average NFL game.

Considering that the Green and Gold and the Minnesota Vikings have clashed in 87 contests since the Purple Gang entered the league in I961, they presumably have shared in excess of 13,000 plays over that 44-year span.

Dealing with such an imposing number, it would be a bit of a challenge to select the "greatest' play in the history of the series - launched in '61 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minn. - a classic neighborhood rivalry that resumes at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis Sunday at noon.

However, in contrast, it would seem the proverbial slam dunk to pinpoint the most "creative" play in series annals.

In any event, here is a resounding vote for what has been appropriately described as one ..

1-4 Packers Remain In The Hunt For NFC North Title

Only one team, the 0-5 Houston Texans, has a worse record than the Green Bay Packers, but the Packers sit just one game behind the division-leading Chicago Bears.

Welcome to the wacky NFC North.

"You don't want to say it's fortunate we're 1-4 now," linebacker Nick Barnett said. "Luckily we're still in the hunt for this division championship."

The Packers and their Sunday opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, both have 1-4 records while the Bears and Detroit Lions have complied 2-3 records. Thus Sunday's game carries great significance for two 2004 playoff teams. They may have started much slower than anticipated but quickly could move to first place in the division.

"They're better than their record indicates, the same as we're better than our record indicates," center Scott Wells said. "They're like sleeping giants."

Much of the reason for the Vikings' dormant start has focused on quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Coming off one of the greatest s..

Bye Week Works Wonders For Running Backs

When asked about the health of his team, running back Tony Fisher knocked on the wood paneling of his locker.

But the bye week already provided the Green Bay Packers with a fortuitous break, allowing the running backs a chance to heal up, learn the offense and prepare for the Minnesota Vikings.

"It was great timing," fullback Vonta Leach said.

The timing was particularly helpful for Ahman Green, who missed the New Orleans Saints game on Oct. 9 with a knee/quadriceps injury suffered during the previous game. He ran for the first time during Monday's practice.

"I felt okay out there," Green said. "It's feeling better."

During the bye week, Green went back to his hometown of Omaha, Neb. where he visited with his daughters, Ahmani, eight, and Myahni, three. He also did cardiovascular and strength work to improve his ailing leg.

The hard work paid off. He looked impressive at practice during a two-hour late afternoon practice on Monday..

Aaron Taylor Makes The Most Of Life After Football

Thirty-three days after the largest earthquake in 40 years caused a 40-foot surge of water to ravage Sri Lanka, killing more than 6,000 Sri Lankans and demolishing the possessions of many more, Aaron Taylor journeyed to the small island off the southeast coast of India.

"I went there to help people rebuild their lives, and it was much heavier than I anticipated," said Taylor, the Packers' first-round pick in 1994. "I'd never been around that much devastation and loss."

Since retiring from the game, the former offensive lineman has built houses for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka, run with the Bulls in Spain, analyzed college football in front of a national audience, taught English in Peru and Chile and traveled through 13 countries in Europe.

Few would have guessed that a football career including back-to-back sectional title at the high school powerhouse in De La Salle High School in Concord (Calif.), two-time All-America honors at the University of Notre Dam..

Bye Week A Time For Rest, Healing & Positive Thinking

Bye Week has finally arrived for the Green Bay Packers and, honestly, it could not have come at a more opportune time. It's a time for rest. It's a time for healing. And, thankfully, it's an opportunity to think positive thoughts in the aftermath of a convincing and desperately needed victory over the New Orleans Saints.

When fans ask me what Bye Week is like, I explain that it's a great chance for the players, if they're healthy, to get some rest away from football for a few days. Normally, the team has four days off so the guys have an opportunity to go home to where their parents live or wherever their main residence is. They can go back and get away from football a bit, relax and re-charge their batteries. It's been such a grind to this point with training camp, pre-season games and five regular season games. This is a much-needed break.

Believe me, there's a big difference between heading into the Bye after a loss as opposed to a big win like the Packers are do..

Manning Goes From Undrafted Free Agent To Starter

During countless phone calls before and after the NFL draft, linebackers coach Mark Duffner thought University of Michigan linebacker Roy Manning expressed certain intangibles.

"I liked what I heard. I got a feel for him," Duffner said. "This was a very anxious guy, a guy that appeared to be very bright. That coupled with what I saw, it looked he was going to be a real good candidate for us."

Those traits along with the speed, size and range that Duffner saw on tape are why Manning not only received an invitation to minicamp but earned a starting spot on the Green Bay Packers.

Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga, a fourth round selection in the 2005 draft, knows the uphill journey every undrafted rookie faces. No NFL team drafted his older brother, Casey, who played tight end at Utah State. Casey went through brief stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Last year the Seahawks cut him after traini..

Experienced Jones to Succeed Harlan In 2007

After serving on the NFL Management Council for 10 years, John Jones never will forget the phone call he received from President and CEO Bob Harlan in 1999, asking him to become senior vice president of the Green Bay Packers.

"It was the phone call you always dream of," said Jones, currently serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Jones received another batch of good news on Wednesday when the Packers' Board of Directors approved a plan for Jones to become the organization's 10th president in 2006 and succeed Harlan as CEO in 2007, after Harlan will have reached the board's mandatory retirement age.

"This is the greatest job in all of sports," Jones said. "Today was one of the great days in my life."

Ever since Harlan became the Packers president in 1989, he looked for an appropriate successor to groom. With Jones, Harlan found someone with the necessary league experience and savvy to steer the Packers' ship.

Uniquely approachable for the head of any corporation, Green Bay Packers President and CEO Bob Harlan always answers his own phone without the assistance of a secretary, speaking directly to any fan, NFL official or reporter who chooses to call.

On Thursday morning the phone did not stop ringing.

That's because he juggled numerous phone interviews, regarding the Packers' Board of Directors new succession plan. On Wednesday the board approved a plan, electing Harlan as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer and John Jones as President and Chief Operating Office, effective at the May 2006 meeting.

"Bob restored the hope and strength of the organization in the Packers as competitive force in the National Football League," Jones said. "It was Bob who dedicated the resources of the organization."

Letters To Lee Remmel

Hey Lee, what game are you looking forward to seeing the most this season? The Packers have to have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL. Personally I'm looking forward to the Atlanta Falcons game, but there are a lot of tough choices. - Mike (Kansas City, Mo.)

Mike, I would say the Monday night game in Lambeau Field on Nov. 21 when we will host our division and neighborhood rivals, the Minnesota Vikings.

Hello, Mr. Remmel, What year was Old City Stadium dismantled? Was there any ceremony associated with it, and what happened to the remnants of the stadium? Thank you. - Dave (Des Moines, Iowa)

Dave, the Packers last played in Old City Stadium on Nov. 18, 1956, a day on which, regrettably, they lost their "finale" to the San Francisco 49ers. As to when it was "dismantled," the caption beneath a photograph which appeared in the Green Bay Press-Gazette disclosed, "The last remains of City Stadium were torn down on July 12, 1966," or ap..

Packers Fans Can 'Click' Their Team To Victory

<a href="http://www.chunky.com/clickforcansvote.aspx"target="new">Click here to vote now!

Packers fans...it's that time of year again and we need your help!

The Green Bay Packers are in search of a fourth consecutive win in the Campbell's Chunky Soup "Click for Cans" online initiative to tackle hunger in NFL communities.

This fall, Campbell's Chunky Soup invites fans from across the country to vote for their favorite NFL team to help food banks in their local community.

Green Bay Packers fans last year registered more than 155,000 clicks to capture their third consecutive victory, earning souper donations for Paul's Pantry, the Salvation Army, Manna for Life and St. Patrick's Food Pantry.

A victory would be a win not only for the team, but also for Green Bay's local food banks, which would earn the weight of the Packers roster in Chunky Soup cans - over 14,400 cans of soup!

Bye Week Allows Packers To Visit Families, Rest Injuries

Like the last day of school before spring break, the Packers players quickly dispersed to cities around the country following Wednesday morning's practice.

"That's how bye weeks are," safety Mark Roman said. "We're trying to get out of here as fast as possible."

Although the Packers eagerly quickly departed for their four-day respite, they enjoyed a crisp Wednesday practice, their third and final session of the week. Their minds remained focused on football as the team worked on 4th down and end-of-game situations in preparation of their next game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 23.

"We got a lot done today," head coach Sherman said.

For the next few days many of the Packers will spend time with their families or visit their hometown before returning to meetings and practice on Monday, Oct. 17.

Defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, who lives in Oneida, Wis., will occupy the time with his one and two-year-old sons, Abdul-Rashid Olatunji..

More Agile Farve Shows Results Of Offseason Work

Brett Favre turned 36-years-old on Monday, but the grey hair speckled atop of his head and the crow's feet beside his eyes tell a different tale.

"He looks like he's turned about 50," giggled wide receiver Antonio Chatman. "On the field, he doesn't play his age though. He still acts like he's about 21."

Facial appearances aside, Favre has turned back the clock by improving his conditioning and becoming more elusive inside and outside the pocket.

"I feel quicker," he said. "I have more stamina as well."

During the offseason Favre trained under the guidance of former Notre Dame strength and conditioning coach Ken Kroener at his Mississippi home. Their workouts focused on strengthening his core muscles to improving the quarterback's mobility.

"What I wanted to achieve was to make the first guy miss and still make a throw," Favre said.

Mission accomplished.

Favre first showed glimpses of that ability during a preseason game v..

Maturing Interior Drives Packers' Defense

Many factors led to the Green Bay Packers' 52-3 win against the New Orleans Saints, including an improving interior defense.

"I'm really excited about this group," head coach Mike Sherman said. "This game -- they really came together."

The Packers only have allowed 3.3 yards-a-rush, which is tied for the fourth best mark in the league. On Sunday they limited the Saints to 95 rushing yards and racked up four sacks.

Two interior players, in particular, played well on Sunday. Corey Williams had two sacks while Grady Jackson recorded four tackles, including dropping running back Deuce McAllister for a four-yard loss.

After missing all but the last preseason game with a knee injury, Jackson has adjusted to the pace of game action and fully regained his health.

"It's the best I've felt since the opener last year," Jackson said. "I'm getting back into it. The knee's feeling well."

Jackson, listed at 345 pounds, has rounded back into game..

Letters To Majik

Are the Packers really this good, or did the shaky Saints have more to do with it than anything? - Justin, Marinette, WI

Justin, it's a combination of both. Finally, the Packers put together four quarters of nearly error-free football by limiting their penalties and creating turnovers. When that happens, you have a good chance to win any game. On Sunday it also looked like the ill effects of Hurricane Katrina were catching up to the Saints. They really did look flat and disheartened by the end of the game.

Majik: Props to the offensive line in the New Orleans game. The lopsided victory brought promise to the land and displayed how important an offensive line is. Trading the line away from Green and Favre has been devastating. I am an advocate of creating the pass through the run. With Davenport down and Green set to return, is Fisher ready to step up to 2 or even 1 if needed? And if Davenport's injury is one that takes him away from the game for serious t..

Majik: Packers Give Saints A Hallelujah Whipping

The Packers desperately needed to unleash four games worth of frustration. The New Orleans Saints got in the way. The end result was one of the most lopsided victories in the Green Bay Packers' long, colorful history. They beat the Saints in every conceivable way and emerged with a 52-3 win at Lambeau Field last Sunday. On a crisp, sunny October afternoon, everything fell into place for the good guys -- much to the delight and relief of Packers fans everywhere.

True, it was only one game, and the Packers have plenty of work to do to emerge from the huge hole they've dug for themselves. But it was a win, and it gives the players and coaches some pleasant thoughts during the bye week as they heal up for their next game at Minnesota on Oct. 23.

The first and most obvious thing the Packers did Sunday was not turn the ball over -- at all. They also had had a lot of success running the football. Anytime you have the threat of running the ball and you have a great quarter..

Former Bill Could Spell Injured Running Backs

The bye week comes at an opportune time for ReShard Lee. The Green Bay Packers running back, acquired on Oct. 6, will go through a crash course in mastering his new offense.

"I'm going to use every day that I can to improve everything I know," Lee said. "As much they taught me, I can go in there and play the game, but I still have a long way to go."

Indeed Lee went right in there. Three days after signing with the Packers, he rushed the ball seven times. He also returned kicks with wide receiver Jamal Jones, but the kickoffs went toward Jones' side.

"It was a lot of work, especially including the special teams," Lee said. "But that's what they expect you to be able to do. That's what the conditioning's all about."

He may see more action with No. 2 running back Najeh Davenport out for the season with a fractured ankle and the starter, Ahman Green, questionable with a knee/quadriceps injury.

After Sunday's game, Green said he would play on O..

Notebook: Tauscher Draws Rare Penalty

With 10:06 left in the third quarter of Sunday's game, something unusual occurred. Right tackle Mark Tauscher committed a holding penalty for the first time of his six-year career.

That call ended an impressive streak.

"Being non-penalized is a big thing for me and all lineman," Tauscher said. "You don't like to get your camera zoomed in on you."

It also rids Tauscher of a compelling defense argument. When referees came down to practice and flagged him for a hold, he used to reference his impeccable track record.

"I can't make that claim anymore," Tauscher said. "Hopefully the refs down at practice will still let it go."

Finishing off blocks and focusing on proper technique allowed to him go so many years without a penalty.

"It's mainly trying to put yourself in the right position so you don't have to look like you're out of position," he said. "Everybody holds."

Davenport Powers Team Before Suffering Injury

Running back Najeh Davenport may have only played one half, but he earned a game ball for his efforts.

"He did an awesome job," fullback William Henderson said. "He did a fantastic job for us."

The Packers only had rushed 91 times for 295 yards, a 3.2 average, on the season until Davenport broke through for 54 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns during the Green Bay Packers' 52-3 romp against the New Orleans Saints.

But following his strong start, Davenport fractured his ankle with 2:56 remaining in the second quarter. The Packers probably will place him on injured reserve.

"More than likely the seriousness of this would take away his season this year," head coach Mike Sherman said. "That's very unfortunate."

The injury occurred as linebacker Courtney Watson tackled him after a two-yard-gain. Davenport's ankle buckled on the tackle.

"We have some tears in our heart," Henderson said. "The dude gave it up for us and ends up gett..

Notebook: Ferguson Redeems Himself

Following a much-maligned performance last week, wide receiver Robert Ferguson responded with three catches for 84 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown.

That catch typified the kind of play he yearned for when he declared himself a No. 1 receiver during training camp.

"That was a big play. I expect myself to make that play," Ferguson said. "If I'm going to sit up and talk about being a starter and things like that, I've got to perform. I brought that on myself."

Ferguson was actually the third option on the 51-yard completion, but he beat cornerback Jason Craft on an 18-yard comeback route and waved his hand to signal Brett Favre. That pass was the longest Packers reception of the season and Ferguson's longest of his career.

"That was a huge play in the game," head coach Mike Sherman said. "That was a great play by him and Brett."

Sunday's touchdown occurred after Ferguson's uneven performance on Monday. Carolina Panthers cornerback Ken Lu..

Harris Returns Packers To Win Column

Al Harris said on Wednesday that he didn't think he would play in the Packers game versus the Saints this weekend.

After all, Harris had a lower back and buttocks injury and the pain got to the point earlier in the week that the eighth-year cornerback didn't know if he would be able to contribute to his team beating the Saints.

Well, it didn't take long for Harris to answer that question in the Packers 52-3 destruction of the Saints Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field.

Harris came up with perhaps the defense's play of the season when he stepped in front of an Aaron Brooks pass for an interception that he took 22-yards for the score. Harris' touchdown return gave his team a 14-3 lead and propelled the Packers to tie their second- largest margin of victory in team history.

Adding to his impressive day, Harris had his second interception less than a minute later. It marked the first time in his career that Harris had two pickoffs in one game, an..

Big-Play Defense Romps Over Saints

The Green Bay Packers may have entered Sunday's contest versus the New Orleans Saints without a win, but they left little doubt of how great they can be if they just put all the pieces together.

After losing their previous three games by a combined six points, the Packers clearly were close to breaking out of their slump but it would have been difficult to predict a 52-3 rout of the Saints at Lambeau Field.

Nonetheless, the Packers caught fire early on and the momentum that had escaped them for a large portion of the season carried the team throughout the contest.

Despite holding the Packers to a three-and-out on their first possession and receiving a 33-yard field goal by John Carney with 8:51 left in the first quarter, the Saints found the going tough the rest of the way.

In fact, the 52 points accumulated by the Packers was their biggest offensive output since they notched a 55-14 win versus Tampa Bay in 1983. The 35 point first-half also wa..

AP Story: Packers Top Saints, 52-3

Brett Favre and his patchwork Packers made up for a month's worth of misery.

Favre threw three touchdown passes despite playing without four offensive starters and losing running back Najeh Davenport to a season-ending ankle injury in the second quarter of Green Bay's 52-3 rout of the New Orleans Saints.

After going three-and-out and giving up a field goal, Green Bay (1-4) scored 52 unanswered points.

"When you have a lot of pent-up frustration, you can kind of explode like that," kicker Ryan Longwell said after Green Bay's most lopsided win since Oct. 23, 1966, when it routed Atlanta 56-3.

Davenport scored twice before breaking his right ankle just before halftime, and cornerback Al Harris intercepted two passes, broke up three more and recorded a sack as the Packers piled up their most points since scoring 55 against Tampa Bay in 1983.

"That's the first time I've ever played in a game where we scored 50 points," Favre said. "Who wou..

Packers-Saints Press Box Notes

TODAY: Refusing to give up after an 0-4 start - and three straight losses by a combined six points - the Packers bid for their first win...The Packers, still only 11/2 games out of first, play another non-divisional opponent. Only two of the team's first nine are against division foes in a clouded NFC North race...Green Bay hosts New Orleans for the first time since 1989, ending the NFL's longest one-city drought between same-conference opponents. The Saints make only their second trip to Lambeau Field...Hoping to get back on track, the Packers look for their first home victory. Counting only their first two home games, the Packers are just 1-5 (.167) since 2003. In home games 3-8 since 2003, Green Bay is 8-4 (.667)...The Packers meet former cornerback Mike McKenzie for the first time since trading him to New Orleans one year ago this week. The Saints meet Grady Jackson for the first time since Green Bay claimed him on waivers from New Orleans in 2003.

Letters To Majik

Hey Majik, with the PACK at 0-4 & October's schedule most likely putting us at 0-8, what would YOU DO to correct the poor performance of "some of the players on the field." Number 4 can't do it alone! - Greggo, Elburn, IL

Greggo, You're right; Brett can't do it alone. The Packers just need to create more turnovers and limit their own. When they did that in the second half of the Carolina game, they did pretty darn good!

Majik, why doesn't the new GM Ted Thompson go out and acquire some additional players for Coach Sherman? I have heard that the Packers are UNDER the salary cap. - Jeff, Marathon City

Jeff, you make a good point, but I don't really see too many good players who are out there and available. Ideally, you always want to bring in a guy at mid-season who already knows the system. Unfortunately, with the lack of available players, the Packers are going to have to figure this out on their own.

What has the coaching staf..

Majik: Saints Still Riding An Emotional Wave

The Green Bay Packers need to re-establish home field advantage at Lambeau Field and Sunday's match-up with the New Orleans Saints provides a good opportunity to do just that. The Saints have been the national favorite in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It's certainly something a guy like Brett Favre can relate to on a personal level. He knows what the Saints players are going through because he and his family are persevering through the same Gulf Coast catastrophe.

As a former player I can't even begin to imagine what the Saints players have been going through, moving to California at the beginning of training camp and not having a "home" game until the fourth week of the season. That game was played in San Antonio, Texas at the Alamo Dome. I can assure you that NFL players are creatures of habit. We like to have the same system, the same routine day in and day out. Through all of this, the Saints (2-2) are coming off a big win last week over the Buffalo Bills. The fact that..

Grady Jackson To Face Former Team

Every Green Bay Packers player will have a lot of motivation on Sunday as the team tries for its first win, but defensive tackle Grady Jackson may have a little extra as he faces the New Orleans Saints, the team that waived him in 2003.

"It's pretty cool," Jackson said. "I'm looking forward to it."

Jacskon's tenure with the New Orleans Saints lasted one-and-a half seasons.

"It was good and bad," he said.

The Saints signed Jackson in 2002 following one of his best seasons. He had a career-high 69 tackles while starting every game for the Oakland Raiders.

Jackson, who signed with the Saints because of the team's close proximity to his home and family in Madison, Miss., had a successful first season. He started 15 games and recorded 55 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks -- impressive totals for an interior player.

His second season with the Saints became less enjoyable. The Saints drafted defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan with the sixth pick..

Recently-Acquired Donald Lee Bolsters Passing Attack

Tight end Donald Lee's first reception as a Green Bay Packer occurred in memorable fashion. A 16-yard touchdown, it helped trigger a fourth quarter comeback for the Packers on the primetime stage of Monday Night Football.

"Every time you have millions of people watching," Lee said. "You always want to do well."

Lee performed well indeed, mastering the offense despite joining the team on Sept. 6 when the Packers released tight end Ben Steele.

"To come here and pick up the offense as fast as he did is really remarkable," tight end David Martin said. "You have to take your hat off to the job he's done so far."

With starting tight end Bubba Franks missing the last two games with a knee injury, Lee has admirably filled Martin's former role as the No. 2 tight end.

"Both David and Donald Lee," head coach Mike Sherman said, "Did a very good job."

Lee played the last two years for the Miami Dolphins, starting 15 games and amassing 2..

Tauscher May Slide To Left Tackle

Come Sunday, the Green Bay Packers may have to reshuffle their offensive line again.

Right tackle Mark Tauscher practiced at left tackle on Thursday and Friday in case Chad Clifton cannot play.

"I'm ready for it," Tauscher said. "It's going to be a big challenge."

The Packers have listed Clifton as questionable with an ankle injury, but he practiced on Friday in a limited capacity

"He's made a lot progress considering he could barely walk after the game," head coach Mike Sherman said.

Kevin Barry, who serves as an extra lineman in the U-71 package, would replace Tauscher at right tackle.

If Tauscher does start at left tackle, he will have to reverse every play in his mind before the snap of the ball.

"It's like writing with your left hand," he said.

Learning a new position while coping with an aching foot injury has made for a trying week.

"The biggest thing for me is to get mentally fresh before Sunda..

Versatile Players Fill In Along Offensive Line

As reporters surrounded his locker and the flash bulbs of cameras popped in front of him, center Scott Wells flapped his eyelids a few times.

Injuries along the offensive line have thrust the second-year player into the public glare. After center Mike Flanagan suffered a muscle hernia during the first quarter of Monday's game, Wells replaced him in the starting lineup and will do so again this week.

"I'm approaching it like I did last week," Wells said. "I'm watching the film as a starter would and trying to be prepared for the first series."

Wells is not the only lineman to approach Sunday's game that way. Grey Ruegamer could start, and Adrian Klemm could start at a new position.

Left tackle Chad Clifton sprained his ankle during the first quarter of Monday's game, forcing Klemm to move from left guard to left tackle and Ruegamer to Klemm's left guard spot for the remainder of the contest.

Terrence Murphy Expected To Make Full Recovery

The Green Bay Packers placed rookie wide receiver Terrence Murphy on injured reserve because of neck trauma but remain optimistic he will return at 100 percent for the 2006 season.

"To get him back on the field was going to be a little bit of a rush and probably not in his best interest," said head coach Mike Sherman, who visited Murphy on Thursday morning. "As an organization we thought this was the best way to go. I know his parents were pleased with the decision."

Sherman said the minimum recovery for such an injury is eight to 10 weeks. Murphy has regained feeling in his extemities but suffers a slight tingling in one of his shoulders. He can walk around but experiences stiffness while doing so.

Murphy suffered the injury on a punt return during the second quarter of Monday night's game. He recovered a fumble, and Carolina Panthers safety Thomas Davis drilled him as he advanced the ball. Murphy lay on the turf for several minutes before officials carted..

Favre And Offense Forced Into Comeback Mode

The Packers have only led for six minutes all season, and playing from behind represents a challenge for Brett Favre and the offense.

"Playing catch up is hard," Favre said. "I would much rather be up. It makes things easier on our team, on our coaching staff."

Their lone lead of the season came on a 42-yard Donald Driver touchdown reception with 9:48 left in the first quarter of Week Two's Cleveland Browns game. The Browns answered when quarterback Trent Dilfer threw a one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Steve Heiden with 3:48 left in the first quarter.

The Packers would never again have the lead in that game or against their next two opponents.

Because the Packers have trailed for the majority of the season, it has changed their playcalling. Trying to rally with the clock winding down, the Packers have relied heavily on the pass, attempting 159 through four games.

"It takes us out of opportunities in the run game that you would like to ..

Perfectionist Ferguson Has Team's Confidence

During Monday Night Football, ABC's cameras focused on quarterback Brett Favre yelling at wide receiver Robert Ferguson.

While sideline episodes can make for juicy television, the mild-mannered quarterback simply explained to Ferguson what he should have done on that play.

"I wasn't really yelling at him," Favre said. "It was more encouragement."

A harsh personal critic, Ferguson does not need someone to chastise him. He accepted blame for an interception Favre threw during the Cleveland Browns game in Week Two.

"He's very, very accountable," head coach Mike Sherman said. "I've never heard him make excuses for anything."

Perhaps Ferguson should have fought off Gary Baxter, but the Browns cornerback made an excellent play, catching the ball at the highest point.

Ferguson also focused on that play instead of his four catches for 47 yards and one touchdown in that game.

"He's so hard on himself on what he didn't do,"..

Majik: Packers Show Fight, But It's Not Enough (Again)

Talk about a game with a split personality!

The Packers' heartbreaking loss to the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night was a tale of two halves. Once again, the story had a sour ending. In the second quarter the Packers made some big mistakes, and the Panthers cashed in with 16 unanswered points. Ahmad Carroll was flagged for a 26-yard pass interference penalty while drawing the difficult task of trying to cover Steve Smith man-to-man, leading to a field goal. An apparent miscommunication left Deshaun Foster all alone over the middle and led to a 47-yard gain. That set up a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jake Delhomme to Michael Gaines. Brett Favre threw a sharp pass to Robert Ferguson on the slant route, but Panther defensive back Ken Lucas snatch the ball away from Ferguson. A pick set up an 11-yard TD by Stephen Davis.

Sixteen unanswered points. The Packers dug themselves a hole so deep that even a four-touchdown passing performance by Brett Favre was not enough i..

Packers Feel Effects Of Physical Game

Packers head coach Mike Sherman described the intensity of Monday's 32-29 loss to the Carolina Panthers, which featured two teams needing a victory and playing on the primetime stage of Monday Night Football.

"It was as physical a game as I can remember on both sides of the ball," Sherman said on Tuesday.

The physical nature shows the Packers continue to work hard at digging themselves out an 0-4 hole but may also have led to an array of Packers injuries.

Rookie Terrence Murphy, leveled by Thomas Davis during a second quarter punt return, suffered neck trauma. He remains in a Charlotte, N.C. hospital.

"He's doing better," Sherman said.

Director of Player Development Turner Gill stayed with him, and they both will fly back to Green Bay, Wis. on Wednesday.

Doctors are examining running back Ahman Green, who took a hit on his quadriceps during the game. Linebacker Na'il Diggs, who strained the medial collateral ligament in his..

Remmel: Packers vs. Saints

Focusing on football in the devastating wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita - even for those in distant areas of the country, far removed from the destruction - is not a simple task.

And, obviously, it continues to be a challenge for the New Orleans Saints, temporarily headquartered in San Antonio these days, who invade Lambeau Field next Sunday. Yet, despite being a "road" team, they have been highly competitive - having squared their record at 2-2 with a 19-7 conquest of the Buffalo Bills over the weekend.

Under the unique circumstances, there is a natural tendency to zero in on the present and the attendant distractions. The principals' collective history thus is likely to be lost for the moment.

In any case, pausing to sight in on the Packers' rivalry with the Saints from the Green and Gold's perspective, it is remarkable how much has transpired in Titletown since the Louisianans last visited Green Bay for a regular season engagement on Sept. 17, 1989.

Fourth Quarter Comeback Leaves The Packers A Bit Short

You can put to rest any reports that Brett Favre has lost something as the 15-year veteran responded with his best game of the season and led a furious second-half rally.

Despite connecting on back-to-back fourth quarter touchdown passes, Favre's performance was not enough as the Packers fell 32-29 to the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football.

The loss drops the Packers to 0-4 and in sole possession of last place in the NFC North. The Packers can take some solace that everyone in the division has an under-.500 record.

Their mounting injuries could be of greater concern than their standing within the division. The Packers already entered Monday's game without valuable receiving options Javon Walker (knee) and Bubba Franks (knee).

On Monday night the injury bug struck the offensive line. In the first quarter center Mike Flanagan strained an abdominal muscle and left tackle Chad Clifton injured his ankle when running back Ahman Green rolle..

AP Story: Packers Fall To Panthers, 32-29

Brett Favre stood alone at midfield, watching in frustrated disbelief as the Carolina Panthers celebrated the end of his improbable rally. It was vintage Favre, but despite his best efforts, the Green Bay Packers are off to their worst start in 17 years.

Favre threw four touchdown passes but couldn't overcome two early turnovers that the Panthers used to build a big lead, and Carolina held on for a 32-29 victory.

The Packers fell to 0-4 for the first time since 1988.

"It's hard to express in words how disappointed I am. I left it all on the field," Favre said. "I've never been 0-4, but it's a hand we've been dealt."

Rallying Green Bay from a 19-point deficit in the third quarter, Favre threw two touchdown passes and two 2-point conversions in the fourth quarter and had the Packers in position to win the game on their final drive.

But with running back Ahman Green sidelined by an injured knee and no timeouts, Favre had to do it all on ..

Packers-Panthers Press Box Notes

TONIGHT: Stung from an 0-3 start and two close losses, the Packers bid for their first win in a rematch of their 2004 Monday night opener...An unofficial division opponent, Carolina plays Green Bay for the ninth time in 10 years. Over the past decade (1996-2005), the only year in which the clubs did not meet was 2003 - and they nearly met that season in the NFC Championship game...Former Packers guard Mike Wahle, who signed as a free agent with the Panthers in March, meets his old teammates for the first time.

NFL'S TOP MONDAY NIGHT RECORD: Mike Sherman said this week that the extra day of rest is vital to his players in preparing physically for a Monday night game. This week, for example, he used Wednesday to rest starters Donald Driver (ankle), Aaron Kampman (thigh), Bubba Franks (knee) and Ahmad Carroll (knee). While Sherman takes more pride in the team's short-week success - its record the week after playing on Monday night - no other NFL team owns a better..

Goin' To Carolina And Lookin' For A Win

Yes, the Green Bay Packers are headed to Carolina this week, but with apologies to singer James Taylor, this visit won't be about sunshine, moonshine and good friends. This week is all about business for both teams. You hate to use the word "desperate" in Week Four, but these two teams are both off to rough starts with only one victory between them. The Carolina Panthers are at home, and it's Monday Night Football. You know they will be fired up. The Packers should expect a very hostile Bank of America Stadium.

I think the Panthers are a much better team than their 1-2 record indicates. They lost their season opener against the New Orleans Saints on a last-second, 47-yard field goal. They beat the World Champion New England Patriots in Week Two and then stumbled again last week, losing on another last-second field goal to the Miami Dolphins. That one really stung for Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, who threw an ill-advised pass in the fourth quarter that was picked off a..

Notebook: Packers On The Verge Of Forcing More Interceptions

Having intercepted only one pass this season, the Packers rank last in the NFL with a -8 takeaway-giveaway ratio. But if this week's practices are any indication, the Packers may improve significantly in that department.

"This week has been pretty good as far as turnovers." Cornerback Jason Horton said. "We're all real focused on getting the ball out."

During Saturday's practice several players had interceptions, including safety Earl Little with two and safeties Mark Roman and Nick Collins each with one. On Friday Collins intercepted a pass in the end zone, which would have been a 100-plus-yard touchdown return. Each takeaway involved a defensive back making an impressive play.

"It wasn't like the quarterback just threw them up," Little said.

Little, who intercepted 17 passes while with the Cleveland Browns from 1999-2004, believes practice takeaways translate to games. In 2001 the Browns picked off three or four passes per practice and ended up ..
