Harlans Among 'Families of Distinction'
by Mike Spofford, Packers.com posted 03/13/2007
Bob and Madeline Harlan have never gone about their community activities looking for any recognition.
But this year, the recognition found them.
The Harlans will be one of four families honored on Tuesday night at the eighth annual Green Bay-De Pere YWCA Families of Distinction dinner at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. Packers President John Jones will be the keynote speaker at the event as well.
Harlan, the retiring Chairman and CEO of the Packers, and his wife have been involved in various community organizations during their 36 years in Green Bay, but Harlan noted that two recent projects have been particularly meaningful and perhaps led to this award.
Madeline, a nurse, was the honorary chairperson for the emergency room fund drive at St. Mary's Hospital on Green Bay's west side, an effort that raised more than $3.5 million, according to Harlan.
The Harlans also have been involved with the Libertas Treatment Center, a chemical dependency facility that serves adolescents and adults all across northeast Wisconsin. Libertas operates an inpatient program in Green Bay as well as outpatient clinics in Marinette, Sheboygan and Sturgeon Bay.
"Libertas is important because it's so devastating not only to the kids who are involved with drugs, but to the families," Harlan said. "So these are two things that have meant a great deal to my wife, and I've been involved with her on both projects and we're very proud of what's been accomplished."
Harlan feels his leadership through the Lambeau Field renovation may have played a part in the award as well.
"When we were doing the stadium we kept telling everybody it was going to enhance the community, and the very first event we had here was a black-tie dinner that raised over $500,000 for the endowment of St. Mary's Hospital," Harlan said. "So I imagine it's the culmination of all of those things."
The other honorees are the family of Drs. John Andrews and Susan Piechowski, Bill and Jane Campion and their four children, and Miguel and Josefina Sanchez and their eight children. The families all were nominated by friends and community members.
"It's a wonderful honor and we both feel very good about it," Harlan said. "We weren't looking for publicity or honors. We were looking for something we could really throw ourselves into and be enthusiastic about, and these were two projects that are very, very important.
"We feel very fortunate. We've been in this community for 36 years, raised our family here and obviously have a great feeling for it. It's a wonderful area in which to raise children, and we're very proud to give and hopefully make the community a better place." |
