While Packers players donned their helmets for practice Monday at Clarke Hinkle Field, kids were being fitted for their own helmets - bike helmets - at Lambeau Field during a program to promote bike safety.

The Green Bay Packers, Children's Health Education Center (CHEC) and Kohl's Department Stores teamed up to distribute 250 free bike helmets as part of the "Kohl's Tour for Kids' Safety," a program designed to teach families about vehicle and bike safety through hands-on car seat installation clinics and interactive programs that promote the importance of wearing properly fitted bike helmets.

Representatives from CHEC, a member of the Children's Hospital and Health System, and Kohl's fitted and distributed the helmets to young Packers fans. During the fitting process, children and their parents were educated about the importance of wearing properly fitted bike helmets.

"It's been great to partner with the Children's Health Education Center and the Packers with this program," said Bruce Desotelle, a district manager for Kohl's. "It's a great way for Kohl's to give back in the communities we serve. And what a great place to do it, too, with the 'bike kids' at Lambeau Field."

It's the second year of the "Kohl's Tour for Kids' Safety" and the second stop at Lambeau Field as the program celebrated the time-honored bike tradition at Packers Training Camp. Since August 2006, the tour has fitted more than 1,000 bike helmets and checked more than 700 car seats throughout Wisconsin. The tour was made possible by a $725,000 grant from the Kohl's Cares for Kids program. Kohl's sells special Kohl's Cares for Kids merchandise for $5 with 100 percent of the net profit benefiting youth-serving programs and organizations.

Monday's event was a great opportunity for safety experts to share their message with those who need it most.

"Bike helmets are a big part of preventing injuries," said Jane Howard, an injury prevention event coordinator for CHEC. "We can fix broken arms and hands, but a head injury needs to be prevented.

"Today we can ensure the helmets fit properly and also can stress the importance of wearing helmets to the kids and their parents."
