Game Review: Plenty To Evaluate From Loss In Preseason Finale

NASHVILLE - All that's left now is to watch the film and make the final decisions.

The Packers finished up their 2007 preseason with a 30-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Thursday at Nashville's LP Field, but with the starters playing only half of the first quarter, this game was primarily about getting one final look at all the backups fighting for roster spots before the final cutdown from 75 to 53 players on Saturday.

"I'm very pleased with the number of reps that we got in the situations we put our players in," said Head Coach Mike McCarthy, who got to see many of his backups go against Tennessee's starters before the Titans went to their bench in the third quarter. "We're not happy about the final score obviously, but the evaluation part of it, I thought we got a ton of information to draw from."

The loss evened Green Bay's preseason record at 2-2, but for the third straight game, the Packers' starters exited with the lead.

Notebook: Harrell Makes Big Play In Return Home

NASHVILLE - Defensive tackles don't get in the end zone often, so if Justin Harrell was going to score a touchdown, he might as well do it in Tennessee.

Playing in his home state and near his alma mater, the University of Tennessee, Harrell made the biggest play of his brief NFL career as the third quarter opened on Thursday night.

On Tennessee's first snap of the second half, fellow rookie Larry Birdine beat his man around the corner for a sack of Titans quarterback Vince Young. Birdine forced a fumble that Harrell snagged in midair, and he rumbled 18 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14.

"It was just a great all-around play by the defense," Harrell said. "Larry Birdine had great pressure, hit the quarterback, and the coverage was there. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The ball just popped up and I was able to catch it and run with it."
AP Story: Titans Top Packers In Preseason Finale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans desperately want to roll into the season with some momentum. That means they take the preseason very seriously.

Vince Young threw for a touchdown and ran for another for a second straight week, LenDale White added 77 total yards, and they helped the Titans wrap up the preseason by beating Favre and the Green Bay Packers 30-14 Thursday night.

Tennessee (3-1) had its first winning preseason since 2002. Coach Jeff Fisher used this game as his dress rehearsal for the Titans' season opener at Jacksonville, playing most of his starters into the third quarter a year after going 1-3 in the preseason before an 0-5 start in the regular season.

"A lot of people keep saying preseason games don't count and this and that," Young said. "It counts to us. We want to continue to get better. We want to continue to keep working. ... We've got a long way to go. We want to continue using these games to get better and better."

Herron Handles Third-Down Challenges

At first glance, the job of a third-down running back sounds pretty simple -- take the field on third down, run a short route, and be ready to catch a pass out of the backfield if nobody is open downfield.

But the job description for a third-down back is actually far more complicated than that. In fact, the reason the job description even exists as a specialty is precisely because it's so complex.

Third down is, without question, the most complicated as well as critical down in football. The offense is trying to convert to keep its drive alive, while the defense will do whatever it takes to get the stop, and get the ball back.

As a result, defenses might employ any number of personnel packages on third down. They could go with a nickel (five defensive backs), or a dime (six DBs), three down linemen or four, or throw a blitz at the quarterback out of any alignment.

That becomes the first job of the third-down back, to recognize the defensive alignme..

Annual Welcome Back Luncheon Held Tuesday

More than 1,100 fans packed the Lambeau Field Atrium Tuesday for the annual Green Bay Chamber of Commerce Welcome Back Packers Luncheon.

Started by former Packers Coach Vince Lombardi in the 1960s, the event gives fans the opportunity to sit down with a Packers player or coach and enjoy a pleasant lunch together.

The crowd also heard from Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his outlook for the 2007 season.

Another component of the event is the presentation of the community service award, an annual recognition of a player or coach who gives back to the community. It has been awarded annually since 1987.

This year's recipient was linebacker Brady Poppinga. Off the field, the third-year player's work involves his church, where he acts as a youth leader, giving hour-long motivational and moral lessons weekly as well as supporting other youth activities. He also has supported the Boy Scouts of America by producing a public service announcement, for whi..

Training Camp Report: Safety One Of Many Spots Getting Close Look

There are plenty of roster spots still up for grabs as the Packers enter their preseason finale at Tennessee on Thursday.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said there almost isn't a position on the roster, except long snapper and punter, that doesn't have something to be sorted out before the final roster reduction from 75 to 53 players on Saturday.

One of the spots getting extensive scrutiny is the safety position, where new starter Atari Bigby will play close to a full half in making his bid to hold onto the starting job.

"Atari needs to show that he can be consistent," McCarthy said. "That's really the biggest thing I'm looking for. His impact plays, he's shown that ability and it's exciting. But we need it every down in and out, the communication, that's what I'll be watching from him on Thursday night."

In addition, with Aaron Rouse out with a hamstring injury, McCarthy said he may hold out veteran Marquand Manuel in order to give backups Charlie Pepra..

Training Camp Report: Favre Sees Value In Playing Thursday

As much as training camps can get to be dull after 17 years in the NFL, quarterback Brett Favre does see some benefits to him playing at least a little bit in Thursday's preseason finale at Tennessee.

Favre said during his press conference on Monday that he would prefer to play, because it would provide a few more game snaps with some of the young skill players in this offense like receiver James Jones, fullback Korey Hall and any number of running backs.

"It gives me a chance to play with these younger guys, because we're going to have to play together," Favre said. "I see each week in practice improving from a chemistry standpoint, feeling more comfortable. There's still some things we have to work out, and the only way you work them out is to play together."

Jones more than likely will start at receiver in place of Donald Driver, who sprained his foot in last week's game. Favre was visibly displeased at a couple of mistakes by Jones early in that game. O..

Training Camp Report: Wynn Returns To Practice

Rookie running back DeShawn Wynn returned to practice for the first time in three weeks on Sunday, and the seventh-round draft pick now has one preseason game to earn a spot on the final 53-man roster.

When he's been on the field, Wynn has shown the type of power and explosion the Packers were hoping they were getting from the national champion Florida Gators. But the problem is Wynn hasn't been on the field enough.

He missed most of the spring workouts with a calf injury, then was in and out of practice when training camp began with a stomach virus. His latest injury, a rather significant quadriceps strain, forced him to miss the first three preseason games and, along with Vernand Morency's knee injury, had left the Packers thin at running back.

"It definitely felt good to be out there," Wynn said. "One thing I was really trying to focus on today was getting my wind back and my legs under me. From a football conditioning standpoint, I did a lot of running ..

Notebook: Driver Appears To Have Dodged Serious Injury

General Manager Ted Thompson didn't have a real specific update on wide receiver Donald Driver's status, but in this case, no news was probably good news.

Driver sprained his right foot in Thursday night's preseason loss to Jacksonville when he was tackled after a 12-yard reception in the second quarter. The team was hopeful after the game that the injury was not serious, and as another day passed that still appears to be the case.

"He was feeling better today, and the doctors are still fairly encouraged," Thompson said during his Friday press conference. "He's a remarkably tough professional football player that was also blessed with remarkable genetics, I think. I don't know how you can predict this, but we feel fairly good that he's going to be OK."

Thompson said the hope is that Driver will be recovered in time for the regular-season opener on Sept. 9 vs. Philadelphia, but he wasn't going to guarantee that. He did reiterate one thing Head Coach Mike McC..

Notebook: Bishop Packs A Punch

In a game featuring some big hits by both teams, Packers backup middle linebacker Desmond Bishop certainly had the biggest.

Early in the second quarter Thursday night, Jacksonville's Reggie Williams caught a short pass over the middle from quarterback Byron Leftwich, and Bishop laid Williams out with a wallop that popped his helmet off. Impressively, Williams held onto the ball for a 4-yard gain.

"We were in zone, and I just dropped back, read Leftwich's eyes, and I saw the receiver coming across and it was just natural instinct," said Bishop, a rookie sixth-round draft choice. "I knew he was going to dump it off and I just broke on it.

"It's like all the X's and O's fit perfectly, and it's just a perfect play. For that one play you're on point, and that feels good."

In celebration, Bishop started to take his own helmet off but thought better of it and didn't. It's a good thing, because removing his helmet voluntarily would have cost him a 15-yard ..

Jennings, Jones Prepared To Fill Void If Needed

An old adage suggests no one is irreplaceable, but when it comes to Donald Driver, the Packers certainly do not want to test that theory.

However, they may not have a choice.

Driver suffered a foot injury near the end of the second quarter in Thursday night's game against the Jaguars when he was tackled after a 12-yard catch and according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy, the early prognosis is that the team's top wide receiver has a foot sprain.

Obviously, this could be a significant setback to not only Brett Favre, but an entire offense that relies so heavily on Driver's contributions. However, if there is a silver lining in this story, it's that rookie James Jones has emerged as a quality NFL receiver and second-year man Greg Jennings appears capable of an increased role in the offense.

Another consolation is that the regular season opener versus Philadelphia is still 16 days away, which should give both the coaching staff and the offensive unit ..

Game Review: Driver Injured In Loss To Jaguars

In the end, the 21-13 final score in favor of Jacksonville matters little, and not just because it was only a preseason game.

What's foremost on the minds of the Packers and their fans is the health of Pro Bowl wide receiver Donald Driver, who left Thursday night's game at Lambeau Field in the second quarter with a foot sprain.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said after the game Driver was in good spirits, but a complete status report won't be known until Friday. Obviously, the team is hoping Driver will be out for only a limited period of time.

"That's part of the game," McCarthy said. "It's unfortunate (but) hopefully it's not serious."

Driver was injured on the Packers' lone touchdown drive of the game. On the second play of a nine-play drive late in the second quarter, Driver reached high to catch Aaron Rodgers' throw on a crossing route and then tried to shake a couple of tackles.

His foot appeared to get rolled on by a Jacksonville defender..

AP Story: Jaguars Rally Past Packers For Victory

The Green Bay Packers lost Pro Bowl wide receiver Donald Driver and their unbeaten preseason record in a 21-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lambeau Field on Thursday night.

After sputtering under starting quarterback Byron Leftwich, the Jaguars' offense woke up when backup David Garrard entered the game early in the third quarter. Playing against the Packers' second-string defense, Garrard played two series and led the Jaguars (2-1) to two touchdowns.

A bigger concern for the Packers was the status of Driver, who was taken to the locker room just before halftime with an injury to his right foot.

He was injured after catching a pass from Rodgers late in the second quarter and spinning away from cornerbacks Terry Cousin and Brian Williams. Driver then was tackled by safety Sammy Knight and landed awkwardly.

Driver was helped off the field, then sat in the front seat of a motorized cart as he was taken to locker room at the two-minute warning t..

Two Of A Kind: Second-Year Guards Grow Together

Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge arrived at St. Norbert College, site of the Green Bay Packers training camp dormitories, with a lot of anxious adrenaline last year. The rookie guards had the arduous task of learning new players, new coaches, a new playbook and getting to know each other.

As it turns out, they're quick studies.

Spitz and Colledge's on-field accomplishments are exceeded only by their growing friendship off the field.

"We hit it off from the get-go as you can tell," Spitz said. "We've gotten along since we've been here, which is good, because they seem to have paired us together since Day 1. It's been a great relationship between the two of us and hopefully it will last a long time."

Just watching Spitz and Colledge interact together, it's easy to see why the two have developed such a strong bond. Colledge's laid-back and strong-toned personality compliments Spitz's boisterous, sarcastic and full-of-life character.

Korey Hall Training Camp Diary - Part V

Rookie sixth-round draft choice Korey Hall is going through his first NFL training camp, and Packers.com has been chronicling his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Hall was a linebacker at Boise State but is being converted to fullback by the Packers. He's also being looked at as a potential regular on all the special teams units, where he excelled as a college player.

In this fifth installment, Hall reflects on the preseason game against Seattle, feeling some aches and pains of the physical pro game, making some corrections in his route-running on pass plays, and learning to watch film at his new position.

I felt there were some positive things I could take out of the Seattle game. I felt I was a lot more physical in that game than I was against Pittsburgh. The coaches talked to me before the game, and that's one thing they wanted to see out of me. I had a missed assignment in that game, and it's kind of frustrating because it's ..

Training Camp Report: Coston Being Groomed As 'Super-Sub'

While in college at North Carolina A&T, Junius Coston lined up at every position on the offensive line during his four-year career.

He nearly accomplished that in one practice on Tuesday.

At various times during team (11-on-11) periods, Coston took snaps with the No. 1 offensive line at three different spots - right tackle for Mark Tauscher, right guard for Jason Spitz, and left guard for Daryn Colledge. He also took reps as a second tight end in the goal-line package, and at left tackle with the No. 2 line.

The Packers are putting Coston's versatility to good use, grooming him in essence as a "super-sub" should any of the aforementioned spots need a replacement due to injury or otherwise.

"We're trying to get him possibly ready to play different spots during the course of a game," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. "We're just moving him around doing the best we can to give him a fighting chance, so all of a sudden we don't just throw him out..

Training Camp Report: Starters Not Likely To Play Three Quarters Thursday

Normally for the third preseason game, a team will play its starters for the first three quarters, the most playing time they're likely to get during the four preseason contests.

But with the Packers coming out of Saturday night's game against Seattle a little banged up, and working on a short week with their next game against Jacksonville on Thursday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he's "leaning against" playing the starters their customary three quarters in this third game.

"We have other issues that need to be addressed," McCarthy said following Monday night's practice. "No. 1 the health of our football team. No. 2 we still have a lot of jobs up in the air. We'll probably play a bunch of different combinations on special teams and on offense and defense throughout the second and third quarter."

The competition continues to pick up for some key roles, particularly in the defensive backfield, and little has been decided as far as several backup jobs. So McC..

Bigby, Bush State Their Cases, Move Up

General Manager Ted Thompson and Head Coach Mike McCarthy came into this training camp hoping to create the kind of competition for positions that would elevate everyone's play and keep everyone pushing for prominent roles.

It appears to be working in the defensive backfield perhaps better than anywhere else.

Safety Atari Bigby and cornerback Jarrett Bush are two players who have thrust themselves into the fray for significant playing time with their solid work throughout training camp, and their big plays on Saturday against Seattle validated the impact they can make in a game setting.

As a result, both players moved up the depth chart during Monday evening's practice, with Bigby taking first-team snaps at safety in Marquand Manuel's place, and Bush taking Patrick Dendy's spot at the third cornerback in the nickel package.

On Saturday, Bigby had two sacks on blitzes, one that forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Tracy White, and fi..

AP Story: Packers Capitalize On Seahawks Mistakes In Blowout Win

For all of Brett Favre's questions about the readiness of some of his younger teammates, only one question mattered Saturday night: To leap or not to leap?

Rookie receiver James Jones did a "Lambeau leap" into the grandstands after scoring a touchdown early in Green Bay's 48-13 preseason rout of Seattle. But rookie running back Brandon Jackson passed, choosing instead to jog back to the sideline to celebrate with his teammates.

"I thought about the Lambeau leap," Jackson said. "But I was winded, and it was wet and slippery."

Favre directed the Packers to 17 points in their first four drives after declaring earlier this week that their dismal showing in its preseason debut at Pittsburgh -- they failed to gain a single first down with Favre under center -- left him as frustrated as he had ever been after a preseason game.

"I think we executed better," Favre said, in comments issued through the Packers' public relations department after halftime. "Las..

Blackmon's Returns Pay Dividends For Special Teams

It's difficult to get too excited about a preseason game, but be that as it may, it's never too early for a player to separate himself from the pack.

It appears that's exactly what Will Blackmon did as a returner for the Packers special teams units Saturday night.

Blackmon, who missed nearly all of last season due to injuries, will clearly have to make the Packers roster as a defensive back first and foremost, but it also can't hurt his chances that he's given the Packers special teams such a boost in their first couple of preseason games.

The 6-foot, 202-pound cornerback from Boston College showed speed and elusiveness for an 83-yard kickoff return that set up the Packers' first touchdown of the game. And though a horse collar tackle from Seattle's Michael Boulware prevented Blackmon from scoring on the play, it didn't matter. He had done his job by securing the ball and putting the Packers in a prime position to score.

According to Blackmon, thi..

Notebook: Defense Dominates, Changes The Game

The Green Bay Packers' defensive front continued its dominant start to the 2007 preseason with another havoc-causing performance on Saturday night against Seattle.

Coming off a barrage of sacks last week against Pittsburgh, the Packers' No. 1 defense racked up three sacks and two other tackles for loss, along with a touchdown, in just over one quarter of play to give Green Bay a commanding 21-point lead against the Seahawks en route to a 48-13 blowout at Lambeau Field.

It should be noted the Seahawks were without starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and offensive tackles Walter Jones and Sean Locklear against Green Bay's No. 1 defense, but it was nonetheless a good sign the Packers controlled the game on the defensive side.

The fact that the No. 2 defense added a sack, turnover and touchdown of its own by halftime only re-emphasized the depth on the unit.

But it's the starters that will make or break the team in 2007, and they set the tone.
De..

Game Review: All Phases Working In Runaway Victory Over Seattle

The Green Bay Packers gave their home fans plenty to be excited about on Saturday as the 2007 regular season approaches.

It wasn't just that the Packers blew out a shorthanded Seattle Seahawks team 48-13 in front of 69,761 fans who braved a rainy night at Lambeau Field. It was that the contributions came in every phase of the game and answered a few of the questions that have lingered during training camp.

The concerns about finding a game-breaking return man, someone who can spark the special teams? Will Blackmon ripped off an 83-yard kickoff return to set up the Packers' first touchdown.

"I think he's really showing what he can do when the ball's in his hands," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "We're excited about Will Blackmon."

The worries about the No. 1 offense's slow start last week in Pittsburgh? A 47-yard drive for a field goal and a 49-yard drive for a touchdown were accomplished just one snap into the second quarter, and quarterback Brett ..

WR Martin's Mentors Have Sharpened Learning Curve

A young child with an aptitude for numbers might turn into a math whiz, or ultimately become reliant on a calculator. Or one with a natural ear for music can learn Beethoven's symphonies on the piano, while another might not progress beyond "Hot Cross Buns."

Sometimes having the right teachers can make all the difference in the world, and that perhaps is the case with Green Bay Packers wide receiver Ruvell Martin.

Three years ago, Martin was a non-drafted prospect from Division II Saginaw Valley State in Michigan. His 6-foot-4 frame and leaping ability from his high school basketball days intrigued pro scouts, but it is such a jump from small-college football to the NFL that the odds were stacked, and stacked high, against him.

Fast forward to August of 2007, and Martin has now spent almost four full NFL training camps (including this one) with the likes of a Hall of Fame receiver and an 18-year coaching veteran as his mentors to learn the position at the p..

Training Camp Report: WR Ferguson On Trading Block

The Packers are looking to trade veteran wide receiver Robert Ferguson, and whether or not a deal is worked out in the next day or so, Ferguson will no longer be with the team, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Thursday evening.

"We're going in another direction," McCarthy said, noting the Packers were in discussions with a couple of teams about Ferguson, so he was asked not to practice Thursday evening. "We're just moving on with the other guys."

Ferguson's career with the Packers comes to an end after six seasons. A second-round draft choice in 2001, Ferguson caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and 12 touchdowns in Green Bay but was victimized by injuries that forced him to miss 36 of a possible 96 regular-season games.

Last year, Ferguson was lost for the season after just four games with a bad foot sprain, the third straight year his season ended prematurely due to injury.

McCarthy credited Ferguson for his work ethic and professionali..

Collinsworth Shares Media Experiences With Team

As a Pro Bowl receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, Cris Collinsworth was praised and criticized by the media. As a member of the national media covering the NFL, Collinsworth has done plenty of praising and criticizing as well.

So Collinsworth had plenty of valuable messages for the Green Bay Packers as he spoke to the team on Wednesday about fostering and maintaining positive media relations throughout their careers.

Collinsworth highlighted many examples, positive and negative, of dealing with the media that he's learned from both as a player and broadcaster.

He cautioned the players about how sometimes innocuous or off-the-cuff comments can be taken too seriously. He cited his own rookie season with the Bengals, when he was preparing to play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XVI, and he was asked by a reporter what was the best part of playing in the NFL.

Collinsworth said he half-jokingly mentioned "dating girls way better looking than ough..

Training Camp Report: Depth Getting Stronger On Offensive Line

The Packers' starting offensive line has been pretty much set in stone since the beginning of training camp.

Meanwhile the No. 2 line has been far from settled, but one positive development over the past couple of weeks has been the production and consistent play of the backups on the offensive line.

With Tony Moll (neck/stinger) out last Saturday in Pittsburgh, the group of center Tyson Walter, guards Tony Palmer and Allen Barbre, and tackles Orrin Thompson and Junius Coston helped lead the three straight scoring drives that produced a 13-9 victory.

The group paved the way for Brandon Jackson's two biggest runs in the game, of 16 and 14 yards in the third quarter, and they allowed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to be sacked only once, and that came on a scramble when Rodgers stepped out of bounds for a 1-yard loss.

"The second offensive line had a very good game against the Steelers," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "That group as a whole has made a lot..

The Green Bay Packers' Board of Directors held its quarterly meeting Tuesday at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

The meeting consisted of a number of regular committee reports, as well as a football operations report from Packers General Manager Ted Thompson.

In addition, the organization's CEO search committee, headed by Peter Platten, updated the Board on the search process.

"We were pleased to be able to report that we're making good progress in the search for the organization's new president and CEO," said Platten. "We also informed the Board that we are being very sensitive to the confidential nature of the search with respect to some of the candidates. Out of respect to the process, we will not be sharing names with the Board, nor making them public."

Favre Feels Offense Still A Work In Progress

Quarterback Brett Favre has no simple answer for where he feels the No. 1 offense is right now, coming off four consecutive three-and-outs to start the preseason in Pittsburgh.

But as he's said many times before, Favre reiterated Tuesday during a post-practice press conference that progress will come as he develops more chemistry with all the young skill players around him, and that's simply going to take some time.

"We have to find and build chemistry every day and each week, and find what plays work and fit the guys that we have running them," Favre said.

Favre explained that the process doesn't solely involve him but the offense as a whole, from the position coaches learning the young players' strengths to Head Coach Mike McCarthy calling plays they can best succeed at.

Right now in training camp, three of the top four skill position players - running back Brandon Jackson and receivers Greg Jennings and James Jones - have a combined one season i..

Bike Helmet Safety Demonstrated Monday At Lambeau Field

While Packers players donned their helmets for practice Monday at Clarke Hinkle Field, kids were being fitted for their own helmets - bike helmets - at Lambeau Field during a program to promote bike safety.

The Green Bay Packers, Children's Health Education Center (CHEC) and Kohl's Department Stores teamed up to distribute 250 free bike helmets as part of the "Kohl's Tour for Kids' Safety," a program designed to teach families about vehicle and bike safety through hands-on car seat installation clinics and interactive programs that promote the importance of wearing properly fitted bike helmets.

Representatives from CHEC, a member of the Children's Hospital and Health System, and Kohl's fitted and distributed the helmets to young Packers fans. During the fitting process, children and their parents were educated about the importance of wearing properly fitted bike helmets.
Training Camp Report: Bowling Night Breaks Up Camp Schedule

Head Coach Mike McCarthy surprised the players on Monday night, telling them they wouldn't have their regular evening meetings.

They were going bowling instead.

The announcement in the meeting room after dinner elicited some hoots and hollers, and shortly afterward the team piled into three buses and was off to the new Pro Bowl lanes in Howard, Wis., for what turned into a very competitive couple of hours of team-building.

"They were very physical at practice today, so I thought it was a good time to get away and build group dynamics," McCarthy said, as the trash-talking began before the actual bowling did. "These guys will compete for a buck, let alone a championship."

All the players and coaches were divided into 35 teams of three players each, and everyone bowled two games to determine two finalist squads. The trio of strength and conditioning assistant Mark Lovat, rookie tight end Clark Harris and linebacker A.J. Hawk finished their two games w..

One Year Later, Underwood Savors Return

Last year's preseason opener in San Diego, where he blew out his knee and was lost for the season, was a game safety Marviel Underwood will never forget.

But the third-year pro took another significant step toward putting the injury behind him in this year's preseason opener in Pittsburgh, returning to competition for the first time in a year and emerging relatively healthy.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said after the victory in Pittsburgh that Underwood sustained a hamstring injury, but it isn't considered serious and Underwood was scheduled to return to practice on Monday afternoon.

Underwood didn't even mention the injury during post-game interviews and was more focused on getting back on the field, 364 days since his last game.

"I was waiting for this for a year now," Underwood said. "Just to go out there and run around and play with the guys and have fun was great."

Notebook: Defensive Line Cranks Up Pressure

PITTSBURGH -- The Packers came into the 2007 season feeling the defensive line was one of the team's biggest strengths, and that held true in the preseason opener at Pittsburgh.

The Packers racked up five sacks against the Steelers, all by defensive linemen, in their 13-7 victory at Heinz Field on Saturday night.

To further illustrate how tough Green Bay's line was, the Steelers were called for holding on two of the sacks, and both penalties obviously were declined.

"Our goal this year is to be the best defensive line and the best defense in the league," said defensive end Cullen Jenkins, who had the first two sacks. "We want to try to carry this team with our play, so we're just trying to get off to a good start."

Jenkins' first sack came on the Steelers' opening series. On third-and-5, Jenkins reached around and knocked the ball from Ben Roethlisberger's grasp. Jenkins recovered the fumble, but the Packers weren't able to convert the early turnov..

Game Review: Rodgers, Rookies Lead Packers Over Steelers

PITTSBURGH - The Green Bay Packers scuffled through a slow start but rebounded with a solid performance by Aaron Rodgers and productive debuts by rookies James Jones and Brandon Jackson to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-9 in their 2007 preseason opener on Saturday night at Heinz Field.

Rodgers led the Packers on three consecutive scoring drives, one to close the first half and then two to open the second half. Using his legs to buy some time and find openings in the Pittsburgh secondary, he completed several throws from outside the pocket and finished 18-of-27 passing for 168 yards and one touchdown.

"Being this is my third year in the West Coast offense, my second year in Coach (McCarthy)'s offense, I'm just getting more comfortable," said Rodgers, who posted a 95.9 quarterback rating, and also had a 20-yard run on a scramble. "I feel like this definitely wasn't my best performance. I left some throws out there I'd like to hit, but there's a lot of positives."

AP Story: Packers Defeat Steelers, 13-9

Mike Tomlin won't have much to remember from this one, and he could only give thanks it didn't count. Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger also had forgettable showings on a scoreless night for the Green Bay and Pittsburgh starting offenses.

Neither Roethlisberger nor Favre did much as the Packers' and Steelers' regulars were shut out in little less than a quarter's playing time, with backup Aaron Rodgers throwing a touchdown pass and leading two other scoring drives in Green Bay's 13-9 exhibition victory Saturday night.

Rodgers, 18-of-27 for 168 yards, produced the Packers' only touchdown by ending a 71-yard drive on their opening possession of the second half with a 3-yard scoring pass to Carlyle Holiday, who slipped behind safety Anthony Smith in the end zone. Mason Crosby kicked a 52-yard field goal later in the third quarter to make it 13-9, after starting kicker Dave Rayner made a 32-yarder to end the first half.

"The one worry, I guess, I had coming in..

Training Camp Report: Three Healthy RBs To Share Full-Game Load

At this point it appears the Packers will have only three healthy tailbacks for Saturday night's preseason opener in Pittsburgh, but the ones who can play are prepared to play as long as they're asked to.

"If it's the whole game, I'll play it," rookie second-round draft pick Brandon Jackson said. "If I have to play it on my knuckles, I'll play it. Don't matter."

Jackson will start the game as the No. 1 running back, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy said after Thursday night's practice that Jackson would play at least the first half. Behind him will be Noah Herron and combo back Corey White.

All three scored touchdowns during a red zone team drill Thursday night. Jackson scored on a short plunge up the middle, Herron ran one in off the left side, and White made a catch along the end zone sideline when quarterback Brett Favre scrambled to his right.

Already down to four tailbacks this week because of knee injuries to Vernand Morency and P.J. Pope, the P..

Korey Hall Training Camp Diary - Part III

Rookie sixth-round draft choice Korey Hall is going through his first NFL training camp, and Packers.com will chronicle his thoughts and experiences throughout the next several weeks in this training camp diary.

Hall was a linebacker at Boise State but is being converted to fullback by the Packers. He's also being looked at as a potential regular on all the special teams units, where he excelled as a college player.

In this third installment, Hall reflects on the Family Night scrimmage, discusses the snaps he's taken with the No. 1 offense, and looks forward to Saturday's preseason opener in Pittsburgh.

Family Night was definitely a new experience for me. I've never been in a scrimmage game where there were 60-some thousand people watching, so that part of it was pretty neat, just walking out of the tunnel and having everybody cheering for you and stuff. That was real exciting for me. And the fact that it was on national TV, my parents and friends an..

New Deal Behind Him, Jenkins Charges Ahead

If Cullen Jenkins were to turn to fellow defensive end Aaron Kampman for some tips on playing his relatively new position, he could count on some sage advice.

But the best guidance Jenkins has received from Kampman may have come off the field, after Jenkins signed a new multi-year contract with Green Bay in the offseason.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent this past March, Jenkins was in line for a significant pay increase, and other teams surely would have inquired. His move from defensive tackle to defensive end for the final four games last season provided a spark to the defense - including a three-sack game from Jenkins against Detroit - and that unit's play fueled the four-game winning streak in December.

But Jenkins and the Packers never let it get that far, agreeing to a new deal the last week in February that benefited both sides. Jenkins, a solid family man with two children, wanted to stay in Green Bay. And the Packers, noting his rapid deve..

Training Camp Report: Colledge Gets Full Day At Left Tackle

Left guard Daryn Colledge is considered the Packers' emergency left tackle should anything prevent Chad Clifton from playing, and on Tuesday Colledge worked both practices at left tackle while Clifton rested his sore knees.

Until Tuesday, Junius Coston and Orrin Thompson had shared most of the snaps at left tackle when Clifton would take a practice off. But Coston sat out the morning practice Tuesday with a bandage on his knee, and Thompson was bothered by a back injury, so Colledge filled in at left tackle with the No. 1 unit. That left rookie Allen Barbre at left guard, where he practiced on Monday while Colledge rested a minor back sprain.

"It's an excellent opportunity for me to get out there and look at the defense in a different way," Colledge said. "The tackle has a whole different opinion of what the defense looks than the guard does. I think it makes me a better guard to see what the tackle's going through against different defenses. It allows me to think b..

Since the days of Vince Lombardi it's been tradition in Green Bay for the Packers' head coach to have his own television show. This season is no different. Returning for a second season is the Mike McCarthy Show.

Training Camp Report: With Pope's Injury, Wynn To Get Extended Look

Rookie running back DeShawn Wynn is getting back to full strength at just the right time.

P.J. Pope's knee injury from last Saturday's scrimmage required arthroscopic surgery on Monday, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Pope would be out at least a couple of weeks. That leaves the Packers with three tailbacks in Brandon Jackson, Noah Herron and Wynn, plus an extra candidate in combo back Corey White, for Saturday's preseason opener at Pittsburgh.

While Jackson already was getting the lion's share of the carries on the No. 1 offense with Vernand Morency (knee) still out, Wynn spent the past week recovering from a stomach virus that dehydrated him just before training camp began.

He was in and out of practice at times but was starting to feel better toward the end of last week. He carried four times for 12 yards in the Family Night scrimmage and is finally feeling like he's up to speed.
Poppinga Benefits From 'Normal' Offseason

Brady Poppinga, as super-competitive and ultra-intense as any player on the Packers' roster, might be the last one who would ever make excuses.

So you'll never hear him point to his extremely limited on-field practice and preparation last year for his slow start to the 2006 season. Poppinga admittedly had a rough day in pass coverage in the opener against the Bears, victimized by Chicago tight end Desmond Clark for most of his five catches and 77 yards, and made little impact in the early stages of the year.

But it's important to remember Poppinga not only was making just his second NFL start in that game, but he was doing so having returned to full speed in practice just three weeks earlier.

Having spent his entire offseason rehabilitating the knee he injured on Dec. 11, 2005 (his first NFL start), Poppinga had no mini-camps, no OTAs, no Family Night scrimmage and no full-time practice duty until Aug. 15 of last year. Poppinga got just two preseason games..

Favre, Offense Nearly Flawless In Scrimmage

The Green Bay Packers couldn't have asked for any better execution from Brett Favre and the No. 1 offense, until their very last play.

In front of 59,362 fans at Lambeau Field on Saturday, Favre directed two flawless 75-yard scoring drives on the first two possessions of the Family Night scrimmage against the No. 2 defense.

Then in their two-minute drive against the No. 1 defense, Favre and the offense marched 62 yards and was in the red zone when Favre made his lone mistake of the evening, under-throwing a pass into end zone that was easily picked off by Nick Collins.

Still, it was an impressive display of execution up to that point, with Favre completing 13-of-14 passes for 156 yards before the interception on his last play.

"We were consistent," said receiver Greg Jennings, who had four catches for 31 yards on the first two drives. "Obviously we weren't going against the 1s, but anytime you can move the ball down the field consistently and at a ..

Family Night: Backup Receivers Share The Wealth

Backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers said before the Family Night scrimmage that he was looking forward to working with all the reserve receivers to see what they could do.

Rodgers certainly tried to connect with as many as he could.

On his three regular drives, Rodgers completed seven passes, and six of them went to different targets. James Jones was the only one to catch two passes during that portion, and Rodgers also completed throws to fullback Korey Hall, Carlyle Holiday, Robert Ferguson, Ruvell Martin and tight end Zac Alcorn.

Rodgers said some of his completions came from checks at the line of scrimmage, where a run play is called but he can check to a slant pass if the original play is running into the wrong part of the defense.

"It's just a matter of getting us in the right play situation," Rodgers said. "The great thing about Coach McCarthy's offense is the quarterback can put the offense in the best play scenario every time, and I tried to ..

Training Camp Report: Draftees To Get Their First Taste Of Lambeau On Saturday

Saturday's Family Night scrimmage will be the first opportunity for Packers fans to see the team's new additions in live action, and the atmosphere in the stadium will be new to some of them.

Third-round draft pick James Jones comes from San Jose State, where he says the team was lucky to get 15,000 or 20,000 fans on game day, let alone the 60,000-plus expected for a glorified practice.

Jones said when he sees the crowd, the thought might finally hit him how far he's come, from homeless at times as a child to a small-school college prospect to the pro ranks.

"I'll (be thinking) man, this is crazy, I really am in the NFL, you know?" he said. "I'm excited about it and I'm happy to be here."

So are his other draft mates, but they won't necessarily be thrown off by the large crowd. Second-round pick Brandon Jackson played at Nebraska, where Husker Nation is one of the country's most rabid fan bases.

"I won't be that nervous," Jackson said. "I'..

Korey Hall Training Camp Diary - Part II

Rookie sixth-round draft choice Korey Hall is going through his first NFL training camp, and Packers.com will chronicle his thoughts and experiences throughout the next several weeks in this training camp diary.

Hall was a linebacker at Boise State but is being converted to fullback by the Packers. He's also being looked at as a potential regular on all the special teams units, where he excelled as a college player.

In this second installment, Hall discusses the mental challenges he faces, working with running backs coach Edgar Bennett, and the upcoming Family Night scrimmage.

I feel like the first week of camp is going pretty well for me. Each day is a new challenge picking up the new install, and going out to try to perfect my technique at fullback. For me, every day when I go out there, I'm not really like a rookie anymore at fullback, but I'm still trying to get my technique down and try to perfect everything that I'm doing out there. I feel like..

Training Camp Report: CB Bush Continues To Develop

One good way during training camp to see just where a backup stands on the depth chart is to see who goes in when a starter is not available.

With a handful of select veterans given a practice off by Head Coach Mike McCarthy, Thursday morning was a good time to gauge some spots, particularly the deep and crowded defensive backfield.

Al Harris and Charles Woodson were among the veterans absent, which resulted in Patrick Dendy and Jarrett Bush holding the two cornerback spots with the No. 1 defense. (The two did so again on a couple of snaps in the evening practice as well.) Dendy was the team's No. 3 corner, or nickelback, last year and is the early front-runner for that job again in 2007.

But Bush has kept himself ahead of free-agent acquisition Frank Walker and 2006 draftee Will Blackmon, and getting snaps with the No. 1s is the best thing the second-year pro could ask for to aid his development.

"Definitely, especially going against the No. 1 rec..

Favre Thankful For Football To Focus On

As Brett Favre and his family have dealt with a string of tragedies over the last five years, football always has been the Green Bay quarterback's escape, giving his mind something to focus on other than sorrow and heartache.

That is true once again for Favre, who returned Wednesday night from his wife's stepfather's funeral in Mississippi. Deanna's stepfather, Rocky Byrd, died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday night at the age of 56.

It was another difficult loss for Favre, who likened his relationship with Byrd to that he had with his father, Irvin, who died of a heart attack just before Christmas in 2003. Since then the family also has dealt with Deanna's breast cancer diagnosis and treatments, her brother's death in an ATV accident, and the effects of Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast, where many family members and friends live.

"In my dad's case and in Rocky's case, I'm very thankful to have football, probably moreso in those two cases than i..

In Talk To Team, Willie Davis Outlines Winning Mentality

Willie Davis knows what it takes to be a winner.

He was named All-Pro five times in the 1960s, helped Vince Lombardi's teams win five NFL titles, and ultimately was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

So when Davis spoke to the team on Wednesday about what it will take for the 2007 Packers to be winners, the players certainly were listening.
