Packers.com Video Exclusive: Mike McCarthy's Post-Game Speech

On a day quarterback Brett Favre broke the NFL's all-time record for touchdown passes, it would have been a shame to see the Packers let this game get away.

The defense made sure that didn't happen.

A late fumble gave the Minnesota Vikings a last chance on Sunday at the Metrodome, but Atari Bigby's interception at the Green Bay 24-yard line with 1 minute, 6 seconds left preserved a 23-16 win that improved the Packers to 4-0 for the first time since 1998.
In a Packers.com exclusive, we take you inside the locker room as Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy addressed the players immediately following the team's victory.

Favre Breaks Record With Trademark TD

MINNEAPOLIS - The record-breaker was vintage Brett Favre, from the check-off at the line to the bullet throw to the giddy celebration.

Facing a third-and-7 from the Minnesota 16-yard line in the first quarter on Sunday, the Packers came to the line with an empty backfield, three wide receivers, two tight ends and Favre in the shotgun.

It's a formation that has become en vogue for the offense in 2007, and Favre just keeps making it work.

Favre surveyed the defense, and with the play clock winding down, he stepped to his right and hollered to make sure tight end Donald Lee would change his route, so that Greg Jennings, who was split wide to the right, would have an opening on the slant. Then at the snap, Jennings stepped to the inside of rookie defensive back Marcus McCauley, and Favre rifled one of his patented bullets for a 16-yard touchdown, and the NFL's all-time record was his with 421 career touchdown passes.

"It was down to the wire," Favre sa..

Notebook: Jones Gets First NFL Score

MINNEAPOLIS - Rookie wide receiver James Jones had jokingly said during the week that he wasn't sure if he wanted to catch Brett Favre's record-breaking touchdown pass, because he wanted to keep the ball.

You see, Jones hadn't caught a touchdown pass yet in the NFL, and that first one would be as special to him as Favre's 421st would be to the quarterback and to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But everything worked out for Jones, who snagged a 33-yard TD catch on Sunday at the Metrodome in the fourth quarter, three quarters after Favre had broken Dan Marino's record for touchdown passes on a throw to Greg Jennings.

"I'm just glad I got in there (the end zone), I'm glad we got the victory, and I'm glad I get to keep the ball," said Jones, who had four catches for 49 yards in the Packers' 23-16 victory over the Vikings. "But most of all, I'm just glad we're 4-0 and got the win."

Jones' touchdown was a big one, putting the Packers ahead 23-9 with 5:46 ..

Game Review: Win Preserved On Historic Day

MINNEAPOLIS - On a day quarterback Brett Favre broke the NFL's all-time record for touchdown passes, it would have been a shame to see the Packers let this game get away.

That allowed Favre's record-breaking performance, in which he threw his 421st and 422nd touchdown passes to move two ahead of Dan Marino on the NFL's all-time list, count for more than just statistics, which meant a lot to not only Favre but his teammates as well.

"The record is better because we won," Favre said. "That was as good a team effort as we've had. It seems like we say that week in and week out, but everyone had a hand in this game today."

AP Story: Packers Take Down Vikings To Go 4-0

The record is his, for now, and Brett Favre can return his focus on two other numbers: 4-0.

To hear him tell it over and over, this is all he has ever worried about: helping Green Bay win.

Favre became the NFL's all-time leader in career touchdown passes with a couple of vintage third-down zingers Sunday, and the Packers stayed unbeaten with a 23-16 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

"To win, and get this behind us, is a great feeling," said Favre, who threw No. 421 in the first quarter to Greg Jennings and No. 422 in the fourth quarter to rookie James Jones.

He also went interception-free against a defense determined to make him the league's all-time leader in that category. Favre remained three picked-off passes away from topping George Blanda on the career list.

Former teammate Darren Sharper had one in the first quarter that was wiped out by a penalty. He congratulated Favre after the game that left the frustrated Vikings 1-3. The Pac..

AP Story: Favre Sets Record With 421st TD Pass

MINNEAPOLIS - Brett Favre is No. 1 -- with a bullet.

Favre broke Dan Marino's record for career touchdown passes Sunday, zipping No. 421 to Greg Jennings in the first quarter of Green Bay's 23-16 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

He hit Jennings on a 16-yard slant for the score with 4:56 left in the quarter, and like most of his touchdown throws through his brilliant 17-year career, this one had plenty of steam on it.

"It feels great, but I've never considered myself as good a quarterback as Dan Marino," Favre said. "Dan was a hero of mine. To be mentioned in the same breath as Dan and other guys really makes it special."

Ever the jubilant celebrator, Favre sprinted to the end zone and hoisted Jennings on his left shoulder. He joined in hugs with his teammates on the sideline, as thousands of Packers faithful who made the trip from Wisconsin cheered loudly.

Even those dressed in purple stood and applauded when the announcement was made, ..

Notebook: Morency Appears Ready, Jackson Questionable

It appears running back Vernand Morency will be healthy enough to play on Sunday for the first time in 2007, and the timing of his return couldn't be better.

That's because fellow running back Brandon Jackson is questionable for Sunday's game in Minnesota with a shin injury that has kept him out of practice the past two days.

Morency, who injured his knee during the first training camp practice back on July 28, made it through a full week of practice for the first time and has been deemed probable (virtual certainty he'll be available for regular duty) on the injury report.

"Vernand had an excellent day today," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "He went through all the reps. He looks like he has his bounce back. It was just good to see him out there knocking the rust off. I thought he had a good day today, and he put together three full days of work."

Over the past few weeks, Morency has practiced on Wednesdays, only to experience soreness in the knee..

Vikings Have Weapons On Kick Return

A strong kickoff coverage unit starts with having a strong kicker, and the Packers have that in rookie Mason Crosby, who boomed five of six kickoffs into the end zone last week.

The Packers will need Crosby on top of his game again on Sunday in Minnesota, because the Vikings feature two return men who have each broken a big kickoff return already this season.

Third-year receiver Troy Williamson and rookie fifth-round draft pick Aundrae Allison both proved to be breakaway threats in Week 2 at Detroit. Williamson busted a 56-yard return to set up a touchdown drive, while Allison took one back 60 yards to put the Vikings in position for a field goal.

It's unclear which one will be back on kickoff returns this week. Williamson missed last week's game with a hamstring injury and has been limited in practice this week, opening the door for more opportunities for Allison. But Williamson was back to full duty in practice on Friday, and is probable for the game.

Family Message Of 'Game Plan' Resonates With Players

Upon seeing a sneak preview of the new Disney movie "Game Plan" on Thursday night, a few Packers players appreciated the film's family message.

"Game Plan" is a story about a star quarterback, Joe Kingman, living the glamorous single life of a professional football hero. Suddenly, an 8-year-old daughter he never knew he had shows up on his doorstep, and his life is turned a bit upside-down.

Kingman, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, struggles mightily at first with what his priorities should be.

"The point of the movie was for him to learn that it's not all about him, regardless of how much fame he has," receiver Donald Driver said. "There are other people out there more important than him. I think as the movie went on, he realized that.

"At first he didn't really care. He said, 'I don't have any kids.' But as things went on he realized he does love her, and it shows that family always is first in this game."

Division Play Gets Underway

There's a little different atmosphere around Lambeau Field this week, and it's not just because the Packers are 3-0 for the first time in six years, or that quarterback Brett Favre is on the verge of breaking the NFL's all-time touchdown pass record.

It's because Sunday is the first NFC North clash of 2007. A division game, one that in the standings essentially counts double, because with a win you're also tagging a close rival with a loss.

"It's more intense, there's more urgency," linebacker Brady Poppinga said of the week of preparation for Sunday's showdown with the Minnesota Vikings. "You know they're going to come with their best game, so it's important and imperative that we come with our best game.

"It's going to be a dogfight until the end, one of those games that will be decided in the last minute of the fourth quarter. So yeah, it's a little different feeling around here knowing the nature of this game."

Vikings' D-Line Out To Disrupt Favre

When Brett Favre looks at videotape of the Minnesota Vikings defense, he sees a defensive line that is reminiscent of the ol' Purple People Eaters.

"They're good, man, they're good," Favre said. "Their front four guys, first of all, are as good as any we'll play. That's no joke."

And when one of those front four, massive run-stuffer Pat Williams, looks at film of Favre this season, it's as though the clock has turned back a bit, too.

"He looks like he's in his eighth season right now," Williams said of the 17-year veteran quarterback. "He looks great out there. He looks like he hasn't lost a step. He's throwing the ball very hard right now and very crisp."

It's a matchup that's all the more intriguing with Favre on the verge of breaking the NFL's touchdown pass record. Needing just one TD toss to top Dan Marino's all-time mark of 420, Favre is up against a defense so disruptive it has recorded 11 sacks and returned two interceptions and one fumble ..

Notebook: Stats Aside, Kampman's Impact Steady

In 2006, defensive end Aaron Kampman gave himself one heck of a standard to live up to in 2007.

But even though he's well off the pace to repeat his career-high 15 1/2 sacks from a year ago, Kampman isn't bothered by it.

"If I wasn't getting to the quarterback, I'd be like, 'C'mon,' then it's frustrating," he said. "But I've been getting to the quarterback, been hitting them. It's more about making sure you're getting pressure on the quarterback, getting hits, making sure you win the down. That's really what's important."

Kampman had only one sack through the first three games, when he knocked the ball loose from New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning in Week 2. But he now has 1 1/2 after an Elias Sports Bureau film review determined he shared a sack with Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila last Sunday against San Diego when 'KGB' forced a Philip Rivers fumble.

And he'd have another one if Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb hadn't managed to scramble just b..

Relishing Role, 'KGB' Closing On White's Mark

A film review of last Sunday's game by Elias Sports Bureau has changed the defensive statistics for the Packers. On Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's second sack, on which he forced a fumble, it has been determined he shared the sack with teammate Aaron Kampman. So Gbaja-Biamila had 1 1/2 sacks in the game, not two as originally reported. This story has been updated to reflect that change.

There's another significant record that soon could be set by a Packers player, though it's not going to generate nearly as much fanfare and attention as Brett Favre and his touchdown passes.

Green Bay defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila is just 2 1/2 sacks away from tying late Hall of Famer Reggie White for the Packers' franchise mark after his 1 1/2 sacks against San Diego on Sunday.

Gbaja-Biamila, now in his eighth season out of San Diego State, has 66 career sacks. White, who starred for the Packers for six seasons (1993-98), had 68 1/2 of his 198 career sacks while playing..

Watch 'The Mike McCarthy Show' On Packers.com!

Since the days of Vince Lombardi it's been tradition in Green Bay for the Packers' head coach to have his own television show. This season is no different. Continuing in its second season is the Mike McCarthy Show.

The Mike McCarthy Show is a 30-minute program hosted by Jessie Garcia, of Milwaukee's WTMJ-TV and sideline reporter for the Packers Television Network, and Larry McCarren, sports director at Green Bay's WFRV-TV and an analyst on the Packer Radio Network. Garcia, McCarren and Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy each week will review and preview games as well as be joined by a special Packers guest and answer questions from fans. Coach McCarthy also each week will teach viewers about the play of the game with a telestrator.

The Mike McCarthy Show airs on Tuesdays in Green Bay on WFRV-TV (CBS, Ch. 5), in Milwaukee on WTMJ-TV (NBC, Ch. 4), in Marquette, Mich., on WJMN-TV, in Wausau on WAOW-TV (ABC, Ch. 9), in Madison on WKOW-TV (ABC, Ch. 27), in La Crosse on W..

Notebook: Offense Doing What It Takes To Win

Head Coach Mike McCarthy would love to run the ball 40 times per game. Or at least 50 percent of the time. He's said so often, and it's how he'd prefer his offense to operate.

But the running game is clearly not the strength of the Packers right now, so McCarthy has no problem with Sunday's play selection against the Chargers, which featured 47 pass plays (45 attempts, two sacks) to just 12 runs (not including a late kneel-down).

That nearly 4-to-1 ratio is not ideal by any means in terms of developing a balanced offense, but McCarthy and the coaching staff determined the best way to attack the Chargers was to spread out their defense with multiple-receiver packages.

That forced San Diego out of its base defense and into nickel and dime packages, from which the Chargers weren't equipped to blitz as often. As a result, quarterback Brett Favre was sacked just twice and threw for 369 yards, his highest total since Nov. 21, 2004 (383 yards at Houston).

Game Review: Stirring Comeback Puts Packers 3-0

As they walked off the field and into the locker room following Sunday's exhilarating 31-24 victory over the San Diego Chargers, several players hollered a simple declaration that was far more matter-of-fact to this businesslike bunch than anything boastful.

"Three-and-Oh!"

That's where the Packers stand after a frantic fourth quarter that kept the 70,733 fans at Lambeau Field in a frenzy much of that final stanza. Two touchdowns sandwiched around an interception in a span of 64 seconds helped the Packers turn around a late 21-17 deficit and beat one of the AFC's top teams.

And for all the talk the Packers are sure to hear about how they proved themselves, passed a big test, made a statement to the rest of the league, and won't fly under the radar anymore after Sunday, this team isn't going to get caught up in all that. It plans simply to forge ahead and do its best to capitalize on this dynamite start.

Defense Keeps Tomlinson In Check

When it was all said and done Sunday, LaDainian Tomlinson's stat sheet read 22 carries for 62 yards, and three catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Surely those numbers are respectable, but they're also far from the all-world performance that the do-everything Tomlinson normally accounts for.

Considering that No. 21 is a threat to score from anywhere on the field, whether it be an explosive run, a well-executed screen pass, or even throwing touchdowns himself, the Chargers possess one of the game's most dangerous weapons.

Though the Packers held him in check numbers-wise, it wouldn't be entirely fair to judge Tomlinson on his lack of explosive plays.

In other words, Tomlinson may not have had his best game statistically, but that doesn't mean his contributions were small. For instance, tight end Antonio Gates had 11 catches for 113 yards and wide receiver Vincent Jackson finished with 6 catches for 98 yards in large part because concentrating ..

No Rust On Jennings' Game

***
For his performance on Sunday, Greg Jennings was chosen as the Packers 'Hall of Fame Featured Player of the Week.' The new weekly exhibit will contain memorabilia from the victory over the Chargers, including a game ball autographed by Jennings.

For more information on the Hall of Fame's new program, click here.

***

No one would have blamed Greg Jennings if he had a less-than-stellar performance Sunday.

After all, he sat out each of the Packers' first two wins and coming back to face a stiff Chargers defense isn't exactly a walk in the park for a season debut.

Yet, Jennings hardly looked like a player fighting off rust and a lingering hamstring injury when the game was on the line late in the fourth quarter.

With just over two minutes remaining, quarterback Brett Favre hit Jennings on a quick slant that the second-year man out of Western Michigan took for 57 yards and a ..

Notebook: Favre Ties Marino's TD Record

Brett Favre's game-winning touchdown pass on Sunday turned out to be a history-maker as well.

But the first part of the description means a lot more than the second to the future Hall of Famer.

Favre hit Greg Jennings on a slant pass for a 57-yard touchdown with 2:03 to play that put the Packers ahead for good in their 31-24 victory over San Diego. It was his third touchdown pass of the day and the 420th of his career, tying him with Dan Marino for the NFL's all-time record.

"I'm going to be totally honest with you - I'm so glad we won, I could care less about that record today," Favre said.

"Everyone was over there celebrating and cheering and congratulating me, and I said 'Look, this will mean nothing if we don't win this game.' That's what it's all about. There's no better feeling than winning. Those touchdowns were great because they gave us an opportunity to go up and win the game."
AP Story: Favre Ties Marino In Packers' 31-24 Victory

Brett Favre goes out of his way to say he cares about winning, not going after records.

He managed to do both at the same time on Sunday.

Favre found Greg Jennings on a slant pattern for the record-tying 420th touchdown pass of his career. The 57-yard completion erased a four-point deficit to the San Diego Chargers with just over two minutes left and rallied the undefeated Packers (3-0) to a 31-24 win. Favre is now tied with Dan Marino for the most touchdown passes in NFL history.

"I could care less about the record," said Favre, who was 28-of-35 for 369 yards and three touchdowns. "Everybody's congratulating me, but I told them it doesn't mean anything if we don't win the game."

Favre's 38th career fourth-quarter comeback came one series after the Chargers stopped Favre and the Packers cold on fourth-and-goal.

However, the Chargers (1-2) gave up the record-tying touchdown minutes later, continuing their early slide under new coach Norv Tu..

Notebook: Injuries Healing Up In Time

The news was as good as could be expected on the injury front for the Green Bay Packers on Friday.

Of the 17 players on the report, 13 of them have been ruled probable for Sunday's game against San Diego, meaning it's a virtual certainty they'll be available for regular duty.

That includes receivers Greg Jennings and James Jones, who have both been battling hamstring injuries. Jennings' was the more serious strain and it kept him out of the season's first two games, but he is expected to make his 2007 regular-season debut on Sunday.

That should provide a boost to the offense, which will get its top three receivers on the field together for the first time. Jones tweaked his hamstring in practice on Thursday but felt fine on Friday and is also probable for the game. Both Jennings and Jones were limited participants in Friday's practice.

"Talking with both Greg and James post-practice, they felt they went through the practice OK, so we'll just forge a..

Searching For Rhythm On The Run

Offensive linemen take the most pride in being able to do two things - protect their quarterback, and pound defenses with the running game.

The Green Bay Packers' linemen improved dramatically in the first of those two aspects from Week 1 to Week 2. After giving up four sacks and 11 quarterback hits on Brett Favre in the season opener against the Eagles, the numbers were cut down to one sack and two quarterback hits last week against the Giants.

So now, it's time to get that running game going.

Taking away three Favre kneel-downs in the two games, the Packers have rushed for 133 yards on 43 carries in the first two weeks, a 3.1-yard average. The fact that it took DeShawn Wynn's 38-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter last week to top 100 yards on the season only highlighted how much of a struggle it has been to run the ball.

Of those 43 carries by running backs, 26 have gained 2 or fewer yards, and 13 have been for zero or negative yardage..

Reigning MVP Makes Rare Visit To Lambeau

While the Packers have spent much of this week downplaying how much of a so-called litmus test Sunday's game against AFC power San Diego will be, make no mistake about how geared up they are, particularly on defense.

After all, it's not every week the reigning NFL MVP comes to play in your backyard. In fact, with running back LaDainian Tomlinson leading the Chargers into Green Bay, Sunday will mark just the second time this decade that the reigning league MVP will play at Lambeau Field, and it provides some extra motivation, litmus test or not.

"Of course," linebacker Brady Poppinga said. "He's the best. Regardless if he's MVP or whoever, he's a great player, and you want to play against great players. That's the essence of football is competition, and competition against the greatest is what you look for and strive for and want to be a part of."

The last time the reigning MVP came to Green Bay was in 2004. Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, who was named ..

Do you know what happened to the ACME Packing Company? (The second "owner" of the early Green Bay Packers) Did it go out of business, get sold or merge with another company, or is it still in existence today with a new name and ownership? - Dee, Antigo, Wis.

Dear Dee, To begin this answer at the very beginning, it was the Indian Packing Company under whose sponsorship a youthful Curly Lambeau in 1919 organized the football team that was to become the Green Bay Packers.

The Indian Packing Company, however, went out of business during that initial, 1919 season. It was promptly acquired by John Clair (chairman) and the Acme Packing Company. Acme then apparently operated the business into the late '20s, when it was purchased in 1929 and renamed "United Packers." The United firm, it appears, subsequently closed its doors in the early '30s and was never heard from again..

Notebook: Favre Reflects On Best TD, Worst INT

Brett Favre has always been the first person to say that you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to his style of quarterbacking.

So it doesn't make Favre red-faced to know as he's closing in on Dan Marino's all-time record of 420 touchdown passes, he's also on the verge of George Blanda's record of 277 interceptions.

Favre enters this week's game with 417 touchdowns and 275 interceptions, and as he stands just 56 pass attempts from surpassing Marino in that category, it only stands to reason to him that he's nearing the top of both the touchdown and interception list.

"You can't have all the good records, that's the way I look at it," Favre said during his Wednesday press conference. "George Blanda was a pretty good player, I think."

With both records about to become his, Favre reflected on Wednesday on the best touchdown of his career as well as the worst interception.

The former was easy for him to recall. It was his first p..

Marino Saw Favre On His TD Trail

When longtime Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season with an NFL-record 420 career touchdown passes, Packers quarterback Brett Favre was a little over halfway there, with 235 touchdown throws.

Yet Marino felt at the time that if any quarterback was going to approach his record, it would be Favre. The reason?

The Hall of Fame quarterback turned CBS television analyst cited many in a recent one-on-one interview with Packers.com. Favre's ability to make big plays outside the pocket, his ultra-competitiveness and his unmatched arm strength were just a few. But the one overriding trait that has tied the others together and put Favre on the verge of breaking the touchdown mark, in Marino's mind, is his unprecedented durability at the position.

"The thing that's incredible is his ability to play 239 games in a row," Marino said. "I really didn't think anybody would get to (the record), but I knew that the one guy out there that cou..

Team Must Handle Success In Constructive Fashion

The first time Head Coach Mike McCarthy said it, it raised a few eyebrows.

He had just finished coaching his first NFL regular-season game. His team had just been thrashed, 26-0, by arch-rival Chicago. And one of McCarthy's comments toward the end of his post-game press conference last Sept. 10 was that the biggest challenge his team would face would be handling success.

Come again?

Well, it turned out McCarthy didn't have to be overly concerned about his team's ability to navigate some rough patches. The 2006 Packers battled back from a 1-4 start and a 4-8 record with a month to go to finish 8-8 and almost sneak into the NFC playoffs.

"I think every football player that comes through these doors has a natural, survival mentality to overcome," McCarthy said this week. "I don't think they get to this level in professional sports without that. So for them to overcome adversity I think it's something a lot of them innately do."

Notebook: RBs Finding Their Niche

The Packers' running-back-by-committee approach has had mixed results thus far, to be sure, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he's getting more comfortable with calling plays to the strengths of Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn and Ryan Grant when they're in the game.

Thus far, McCarthy's approach has been to prepare each running back during the week for a package of plays he likely will be called upon to run in the game. For the most part, Jackson has served as the primary back on first and second downs, Wynn has handled third downs, and on Sunday Grant got into the game for a screen pass and with pass-protection responsibility.

But that's not to say each back will be pigeonholed into certain role. McCarthy has to caution against that because that would make it easier for defenses to pick up on the potential play calls based on the personnel in the game.

That's not as much of a concern early in the season, when opponents don't have much film to go on, but it'..

Wynn Breaks Out With Long Run, Two TDs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Much like it did in Week 1, the Packers' ground game struggled again on Sunday.

But unlike last week, Green Bay finally broke through for a big running play, and rookie DeShawn Wynn showcased the potential the coaching staff has been talking about since finding him for the bargain price of a seventh-round draft pick.

On the Packers' final offensive rush of the game, Wynn burst through a hole through the left side of the line, faked out a charging defensive back and sprinted for a 38-yard touchdown to seal Green Bay's 35-13 win over the Giants.

It was one of the only bright spots for a running game that gained just 47 yards on 26 carries (1.8 per rush) to that point between rookie starter Brandon Jackson and Wynn.

But more importantly, it put on display the talent Wynn possesses but hadn't had much chance to show when a slew of ailments (calf injury, stomach virus, quad strain) kept him out of numerous practices in mini-camps..

Notebook: Tight Ends Get Involved, In End Zone

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - On a day the Packers' receiving corps was a little depleted, the tight end tandem of Bubba Franks and Donald Lee helped to compensate in a big way.

With receiver Greg Jennings missing his second straight game with a hamstring injury and Carlyle Holiday going on injured reserve on Saturday, Franks and Lee grabbed four receptions and one touchdown apiece in the 35-13 victory over the Giants.

"We plan to do that every week, but it doesn't work like that," Lee said. "We were fortunate enough today where everything went the way we practiced. Some weeks it just doesn't work out the way you draw it up. We're just happy to get the win and look forward to next week."

Franks got the offense going with a 2-yard TD reception from Brett Favre on the opening drive of the second half. It was the veteran's first TD catch in nearly two years, dating back to Oct. 30, 2005, at Cincinnati.

Game Review: Favre, Offense Roll In Second Half Of Big Win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Packers proved last week they don't need quarterback Brett Favre to recapture his MVP form in order to win.

But it sure helps the cause when he does.

Favre and the offense played a nearly flawless second half at Giants Stadium on Sunday, scoring four touchdowns in five possessions to pull away for a 35-13 victory over New York to give the Packers their first 2-0 record since 2001.

"I can't remember the last time we were 2-0. It's been a long time," said veteran offensive lineman Mark Tauscher, who was in his second season in 2001. "It's very encouraging."

So was the performance of the offense, just one week after failing to score a touchdown and relying almost entirely on the defense and special teams to beat the Eagles.

This week the offense found its rhythm in the second half, erasing a 10-7 halftime deficit with Favre's pinpoint passing and up-tempo approach. Getting the offense in and out of the huddle and u..

AP Story: Favre Sets NFL Record For Wins By QB

Brett Favre didn't need a rocket arm to become the winningest quarterback in NFL history on Sunday. His 17 years of football knowledge and a near-perfect second half against a bad defense were plenty.

Favre completed his first 14 second-half passes and threw three touchdown passes to rally the Green Bay Packers to a 35-13 victory over the New York Giants' porous defense.

"Maybe someday down the road it will mean a lot," a typically humble Favre said after the 149th win of his career, moving past Hall of Famer John Elway.

What meant more to Favre was the game ball his teammates handed him after the Packers got off to their first 2-0 start since 2001.

"I'm not going to sit here and lie to you," added Favre, who was 29-of-38 for 286 yards and one interception. "I'm not going to turn it down. I've always been about the team. That hasn't changed. I think it's unfair that the quarterback gets labeled with wins and loses. I think it's a team effort."

Packers-Giants Kickoff At 12 Noon CT

PACKERS HEAD EAST TO TAKE ON GIANTS
-The Packers kick off the road portion of their 2007 schedule Sunday as they take on the New York Giants. The Giants - not the Packers - were awarded the NFC's final playoff bid last season after four tiebreakers and mere percentage points.

-Green Bay enters the contest 1-0 after a 16-13 victory Sunday over Philadelphia. The Giants fell to the Cowboys, 45-35, on Sunday night. After defeating former Green Bay assistant Andy Reid in Week 1, the team again will face a former Packers assistant coach in Tom Coughlin.

-One of the most impressive accomplishments of Mike McCarthy's first year as head coach was the way his club performed on the road. The Packers finished 5-3 away from home last season, recording the most road wins in franchise history for a coach in his first season.

It's been the only way to slow down the psychological onslaught of the beginning of his life in the NFL, which has been as intense and rewarding, in addition to exhausting and exciting and any other such adjective, as that of perhaps any 2007 rookie in the league thus far.

"It's been unbelievable," said Crosby, in perhaps the understatement of his life.

It started for Crosby on Saturday, Sept. 1. Well, actually, it started back in late April, when Crosby was drafted in the sixth round by the Packers and knew he'd have to beat incumbent kicker Dave Rayner out of a job.

He found out for sure he had done just that on Sept. 1, the day of the final roster cutdown, after a long and grueling training camp battle. Crosby spent most of the afternoon at a local sports bar, watching his alma mater Colorado..

Notebook: Coston To Start At RG; WRs Ailing

The Packers had five players make their first NFL start in Week 1 against Philadelphia, and third-year offensive lineman Junius Coston will become the sixth of this season on Sunday.

Coston is scheduled to replace right guard Jason Spitz, who is questionable with a strained calf injury that has bugged him off and on for several weeks.

Coston has been a "super sub" of sorts, taking snaps at every position except center on the offensive line in training camp. That versatility helped him prove his value to the team, but it has made it difficult for Coston to refine his blocking techniques, because they vary somewhat at different positions.

"I take my hat off to the people that can move around like that and stay sound in what they do technique-wise," Coston said.

Still, Coston has proven his capabilities, and getting to spend a full week concentrating on one position was helpful, according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

Whether or not Coston bec..

Offense Expects To Bounce Back Vs. Giants

In a week the Packers would like to see their offense bounce back and have a productive game, facing the New York Giants on Sunday could be both good news and bad news.

It's good news in the sense that the Giants had a rough defensive outing in their season-opening loss to Dallas, surrendering 478 yards and 48 points.

But it's bad news from the standpoint that New York's new defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, spent the previous eight seasons as a defensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, the same team that came into Lambeau Field last week and held the Packers to just 215 yards, including 46 rushing.

"Their defense is very, very similar to Philly," quarterback Brett Favre said. "They're opportunistic, they create confusion. I watched the Dallas game on tape. They gave up some big plays, and that's part of that defense."

The reason Favre says it's part of that defense is longtime Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson's scheme takes c..

Notebook: Packers Hope To Continue Road Success

As the Packers hit the road for the first time in 2007, they do so not only with a win under their belt and a five-game winning streak dating back to last December.

They also do so with a history of playing well on the road under Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

In his first season as head coach last year, McCarthy posted a 5-3 road record, the most road wins in franchise history by a coach in his first year.

McCarthy has joked that the cramped quarters of visiting locker rooms have brought his team closer together and contributed to their success on the road. While there may be a kernel of truth to that, McCarthy also has set up a road schedule for the players that fosters some team camaraderie.

On the Saturday before a road game, the team takes care of its meetings and walk-thrus at Lambeau Field prior to heading to the airport, and upon arriving in the visiting city, the players have a few hours to go out to dinner together before an evening team meeti..

Giants' Quarterback Question Won't Distract Packers

While the Packers have to spend some time this week watching film of the New York Giants' two quarterbacks - starter Eli Manning and backup Jared Lorenzen - their defensive preparation isn't focused as much on any individual as on the Giants' scheme.

It's unclear whether Manning will play on Sunday after sustaining a shoulder injury last week in Dallas. Medical reports have indicated there is no structural damage to his right (throwing) shoulder, so his availability likely will come down to how he feels on Sunday morning.

If he can't play, Lorenzen would start in his place. Lorenzen replaced Manning for the conclusion of last week's game in Dallas, though Manning said that if the Giants had been within one score, he would have gone back in to try to win the game.

But rather than try to guess which quarterback it will be, the Packers are simply focusing on the Giants' offense (which will be missing starting running back Brandon Jacobs, who has a knee injury)..

Barnett Active As Defensive Leader

A middle linebacker generally is expected to make a lot of tackles, simply because of the position he plays and where he lines up on the field. He's right in the middle of the action, but off the line of scrimmage and not immediately engaged by a blocker.

But Nick Barnett's 14-tackle performance in the season opener on Sunday against Philadelphia wasn't just a matter of the fifth-year pro being in the right place at the right time.

Barnett was seemingly in every place at every time. He was plugging the middle, knifing into the backfield, running down ballcarriers to either sideline or sticking with them in pass coverage. The press box statisticians credited Barnett with 13 tackles, including nine solo stops, and those numbers were upped to 14 tackles with 11 solo (one shy of his 2006 season highs in both categories) after the Packers coaching staff reviewed the film.

"He was outstanding in a lot of different areas -- in coverage, his assignments, his commun..

Packers.com Video Exclusive: Mike McCarthy's Post-Game Speech

So much was accomplished on Sunday it's hard to know where to begin the list.

When rookie Mason Crosby's 42-yard field goal split the uprights with just 2 seconds left to give the Packers a 16-13 victory over the Eagles in front of 70,598 fans at Lambeau Field, Green Bay not only ended five games and four years of frustration against the Eagles.

The Packers also won their season opener for the first time in three years and their home opener for the first time in five, hopefully setting the stage for a fast start that has been so elusive.

Notebook: Offensive Line Looks To Improve

As Head Coach Mike McCarthy has been known to say, if it were one thing, it would have been fixed.

But it was more than one breakdown that contributed to the uneven performance by the Packers' offensive line in Sunday's victory over Philadelphia, and the expectation is that the unit will, and must, play better.

"Fundamentally we need to clean up a lot of things," McCarthy said. "We just had a bunch of common mistakes, and that was the most frustrating thing for myself watching the film this morning."

McCarthy addressed both the struggles in the run game and pass protection. The offense produced just 46 rushing yards, and Brett Favre was sacked four times among 11 quarterback hits.

"It's frustrating," veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher said. "We knew going in we were going againt a good defensive team, and we were going to have to get into some kind of rhythm. Unfortunately it never seemed to happen."

Notebook: Bush Sparks Special Teams

Second-year pro Jarrett Bush spent most of training camp nailing down the nickel cornerback spot on defense.

But on Sunday, Bush made his biggest mark in the area that got him noticed as a rookie last year - on special teams.

Bush was directly involved in the two big special teams turnovers that set up 10 points for the Packers, the bulk of their scoring in the 16-13 victory over the Eagles at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

In the first quarter, Bush laid a big hit on punt returner Greg Lewis as he muffed a punt, and the ensuing scramble for the ball resulted in a Tracy White recovery in the end zone for a Green Bay touchdown.

Then in the fourth quarter with the score tied at 13, Bush ran right next to punt returner J.R. Reed as he dove and muffed another punt, and Bush pounced on it with 59 seconds left to set up Mason Crosby's game-winning field goal.

The Eagles vehemently protested the latter recovery, as a Philadelphia player emerged from th..

Jackson, Jones Receive On-The-Job Training In Debut

A lot of players probably get jitters in the opening game of the season, but not all of them have to face the pressure of being a rookie and a starter, however.

Yet that's exactly what running back Brandon Jackson and wide receiver James Jones did when they found themselves on the field with the starting offensive unit on Sunday.

Though neither posted great numbers (Jones caught four balls for 29 yards, and Jackson ran 15 times for 40 yards), both contributed to a Packers win, which served as the top priority for both young men.

"I got out there, did a good job, but I could have done better," Jackson explained. "But just getting that win under our belt, just having that one game experience, I feel good about myself and I feel like that I can get better there."

Game Review: Last-Second Win Accomplishes A Lot
And perhaps most important, the Packers showed that their defense was worth the preseason hype, and that their special teams appear much improved over recent seasons.
Lambeau Celebrating Great Half-Century

It has been a great 50 years....

For hallowed Lambeau Field, that is...the longest continuously occupied venue in the National Football League, which this year is celebrating a half-century of existence.

The list of its memorable moments, launched in 1957 when it was known as "new Green Bay City Stadium," is both long and impressive.

Unforgettably, it has been host to the storied "Ice Bowl," when the thermometer registered a frigid 13 degrees below zero, the coldest temperature ever recorded for an NFL contest.

Such was the impact of that 1967 classic, staged on New Year's Eve afternoon, it later was voted the greatest game in pro football history.

And, in two separate polls, twice has been voted the greatest game in the Packers' own 88-year history.

"Lambeau" likewise has been the site of two NFL championship games, in 1961 and 1965, including the Ice Bowl, before City Stadium "became" Lambeau Field.

AP Story: Crosby's Late FG Lifts Pack Over Eagles, 16-13

All those young teammates sometimes make Brett Favre scratch his head, but at least one of them proved he can come through when it counts.

Rookie Mason Crosby hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Green Bay Packers a 16-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Crosby's kick was the highlight of a win that featured strong special teams and defense by the Packers.

Despite tying John Elway's record for career victories by a starting quarterback with 148, Favre and his young supporting cast struggled to score.

"He'd better make 'em all, now," said Favre, referring to Crosby and the Packers' lack of offense.

It was quite an NFL introduction for Crosby, a rookie from Colorado who beat out incumbent Dave Rayner in training camp.

"I kind of got thrown into the fire in the first test," Crosby said. "But that's kind of how I like it. It's exciting."

Notebook: Jackson, Driver Probable; Morency, Jennings Questionable

Just who is going to take the field at the offensive skill positions for the Packers on Sunday remains in flux, but the picture is a little clearer at running back than it is at wide receiver.

In explaining the team's injury report following Friday's practice, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said running back Brandon Jackson would be probable for Sunday's game, having participated fully in Friday's practice, but fellow back Vernand Morency did not practice and is questionable.

At receiver, the good news is Donald Driver participated fully in practice for the first time since spraining his foot on Aug. 23 and is probable. The bad news is Greg Jennings, who tweaked a hamstring in practice on Wednesday and was limited Thursday, did not practice at all on Friday and is questionable.

Jackson missed the preseason finale last week at Tennessee due to a mild concussion, and he said Friday he's had no setbacks. After a head injury like Jackson's, players take a computerize..

McNabb's Mastery Must Be Solved

You have to go back to his second season in 2000 and his ninth NFL start to find the last, and only, time Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb lost to the Green Bay Packers.

Since then, Philadelphia has beaten Green Bay five straight times, and McNabb was the quarterback in four of those games (he was injured and didn't play when the teams met in 2005).

While McNabb has been far from a one-man show against Green Bay on a successful Eagles team that has qualified for the NFC playoffs six times in the past seven years, McNabb's play in those four victories has nonetheless been borderline remarkable.

He has averaged 299 yards per game through the air, completing 58.7 percent of his passes (84-of-143). He's thrown for 10 touchdowns, without an interception, and when on the run has added 21 rushes for 180 yards (8.6 avg) and three more TDs.

To say he's been a nemesis to Green Bay would be an understatement, and that's why the Packers are takin..

Q&A With Head Coach Mike McCarthy

As he embarks on his second season at the helm of the Green Bay Packers, Head Coach Mike McCarthy took a few minutes this week to answer some questions in an exclusive Q&A with Packers.com. Here is a transcript of that interview:

You've just finished finalizing the 53-man roster with Ted Thompson. How much harder were some of those final decisions this year than your first season?

I felt it was a lot harder this year. This year's football team was a lot harder team to make. We had a number of players, whether it was injury, the timing of their injuries, ... we had a couple young players who played very well who got caught in a numbers situation. It was a lot tougher this year to cut this football team. Good problems. You never have enough good football players, and that's really the situation you want to be in year in and year out.

You kept 11 defensive linemen and 10 defensive backs on the roster. That's 40 percent of your players at two p..

Nickel Corner May Be Singled Out

It's second-nature for a nickelback -- the third cornerback who comes in when the defense employs five defensive backs -- to expect to get picked on by the opposing team's quarterback.

After all, if the nickelback were better than the two starting cornerbacks, he wouldn't be a nickelback, right? So the quarterback is always going to notice when the nickelback comes onto the field, and see if he gets a matchup he can exploit.

That was no more evident than last year when the Packers played the Eagles on Monday Night Football in Philadelphia. In a tight, 10-9 game in the third quarter, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb went after Packers nickelback Ahmad Carroll and succeeded in changing the game.

In a span of less than two minutes, McNabb completed touchdown passes of 45 and 30 yards to Greg Lewis, with a 14-yard pass interference penalty on Carroll in between. It may be unfair to place the blame of both TD passes solely on Carroll, but the coverage di..

Notebook: Starting Strong, Especially At Home, A Must

No one needs to remind the veterans in the Packers' locker room how they've struggled to get off on the right foot in recent years.

They began 1-4 last year, 0-4 in 2005, 1-4 in 2004, and 1-2 in 2003. You have to go back five years to find the last time the Packers were above .500 through September, a trend that will be no easier to reverse this year with games against 2006 playoff teams in four of the season's first five weeks.

"We know these games count toward our playoff run, and we want to come out and start fast," guard Daryn Colledge said. "We've got a tough beginning schedule, and we know that. We want to go out and try to prove ourselves right away."

The Packers have plenty to prove against the Eagles in Sunday's opener. Philadelphia is a team that has beaten Green Bay five straight times over the past four seasons, and has reached the playoffs six times in the past seven years.
Favre, Offense Prepare For Eagles' Blitz Packages

When quarterback Brett Favre studies the Philadelphia Eagles defense, he sees more than just the array of blitzes and disguises veteran defensive coordinator Jim Johnson puts into his scheme.

He also sees a group of experienced players that has the chemistry, smarts and bravado to do what they want, when they want to, no matter the conventional wisdom, and he expects nothing less from the Eagles in the 2007 season opener on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

"If (Johnson) wants to corner blitz with a certain look, I don't think he questions whether or not his guys will get it," said Favre, who has been studying bits and pieces of film on Philadelphia throughout training camp.

"They just play. If they're going to corner blitz, they're going to corner blitz, and they don't care. Maybe you hit one on them occasionally, but they're going to keep rolling the dice."
CB Williams, DT Muir Find Their Way Onto Roster

Every year there are one or two so-called "longshots" that make the final roster of an NFL team, that make the leap from a seemingly unknown commodity to a player with too much potential to let go come final cutdown time.

Such is the case with cornerback Tramon Williams and defensive tackle Daniel Muir for the Green Bay Packers in 2007. What looked like simply extra names at positions with considerable depth and competition before training camp began have made the team's 53-man roster for Sunday's season opener against Philadelphia.

But to hear Williams, a Louisiana Tech product who joined the Packers' practice squad in late November last year, and Muir, a non-drafted rookie free agent from Kent State, talk about making the team, neither spoke in terms of being the "longshot" everyone pegged them to be.

Even if true, they felt they couldn't have that mindset, or they'd have no chance to succeed.

"Really, I never thought the odds were against me," s..

On And Off Field, Jolly Grows Up In A Hurry

When defensive tackle Johnny Jolly showed up for his second NFL training camp on July 27 unable to complete his conditioning test, which forced him to miss the first few practices, it would have been easy to lump him in with all the other young players who don't quite understand what it takes to make it in professional football.

But immature is no label to affix to Johnny Jolly. Not even close.

While overcoming that early absence in camp to land a Week 1 starting spot at defensive tackle speaks to his growth as an up-and-coming player, the strength and grace with which he's dealt with a personal offseason tragedy, and the responsibility he assumed in the wake of it, more accurately depicts his maturity as a 24-year-old man.

Back on May 19, the Packers were in the middle of their full-squad mini-camp and Jolly was spending that Saturday night with teammates, shooting pool at fellow defensive tackle Corey Williams' house.

Nearing midnight, Jolly got ..

Key Players Getting Back On Practice Field

Despite having to put running back Noah Herron on injured reserve Sunday, the Packers took a turn for the better in the health department with the return to practice of several key performers.

Running backs Brandon Jackson and Vernand Morency, wide receiver Donald Driver, guard Jason Spitz and defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila all participated in the opening jog-through portion of practice on Sunday afternoon, keeping them on track potentially to be available for next Sunday's season opener against Philadelphia.

Morency and Driver were both limited in their work, and the practice was in shorts and jerseys (no pads), so it's difficult to say whether either would have participated in contact drills. More will be known about their status when the team practices in full pads on Monday. Jackson, Spitz and Gbaja-Biamila did not appear to be limited.

Seeing the running backs on the field was perhaps the most positive sign, in light of Herron's knee injury from th..

Korey Hall Training Camp Diary - Part VI

Rookie sixth-round draft choice Korey Hall just completed his first NFL training camp, and Packers.com has been chronicling his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Hall was a linebacker at Boise State but has been converted to fullback by the Packers. He's also a regular on all the special teams units, where he excelled as a college player.

In this sixth and final installment, Hall discusses winning the starting job at a brand new position, grinding through the lengthy training camp and preseason games, and looking forward to the official start of his NFL career on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Every time I think about being the starting fullback, it's definitely surprising. Six months ago, I would never have imagined that I'm in the position I am now. But I'm kind of getting used to the idea of it, so that's nice.

I don't know exactly what the coaches saw that they liked. I just tried to do things that had been working for me before in..
