Notebook: Road Win Streak Near Historic Length

The Green Bay Packers' success on the road under Mike McCarthy has a chance to reach a historic level this week.

Dating back to last December, the Packers have won five straight road games, including their first three this year. Looking at regular season results only, no Green Bay team has won six in a row on the road since the Vince Lombardi era, when the Packers put together an eight-game road winning streak spanning the final five road games of the 1966 regular season and the first three road contests in 1967.

Since then, the Packers have won five straight on the road only two times with streaks that overlapped the 1989-90 and 1997-98 regular seasons.

Making the current streak the longest in the last 40 years will be no easy task in Kansas City's notoriously loud Arrowhead Stadium, but there's no lack of confidence when it comes to playing on the road for this bunch.

"When you're successful and you've seen yourself do it, you know you can do it,..

McCarthy Returns To Kansas City With Fond Memories

Mike McCarthy might have grown up in Pittsburgh during the Steelers' four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s, but it wasn't until he got his first NFL job with the Kansas City Chiefs that he truly became exposed to NFL fanaticism at full volume.

To this day, McCarthy remembers his first game at Arrowhead Stadium as an offensive assistant coach. Seven years after concluding his playing career at nearby Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., he was getting ready for the kickoff of Kansas City's 1993 preseason home opener against the Buffalo Bills, the three-time defending AFC champions and the same team the Chiefs would face in the AFC Championship five months later.

"There's 70-some thousand people, and I'm up in the (coaches') box with the windows open," McCarthy recalled. "When they introduced Marcus Allen and he went running out of that tunnel with the crowd screaming, it was like, 'My God, I've never heard anything like that.' Then they introduced Joe Montana, and y..

Since the days of Vince Lombardi it's been tradition in Green Bay for the Packers' head coach to have his own television show. This season is no different. Continuing in its second season is the Mike McCarthy Show.

The Mike McCarthy Show is a 30-minute program hosted by Jessie Garcia, of Milwaukee's WTMJ-TV and sideline reporter for the Packers Television Network, and Larry McCarren, sports director at Green Bay's WFRV-TV and an analyst on the Packer Radio Network. Garcia, McCarren and Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy each week will review and preview games as well as be joined by a special Packers guest and answer questions from fans. Coach McCarthy also each week will teach viewers about the play of the game with a telestrator.

The Mike McCarthy Show airs on Tuesdays in Green Bay on WFRV-TV (CBS, Ch. 5), in Milwaukee on WTMJ-TV (NBC, Ch. 4), in Marquette, Mich., on WJMN-TV, in Wausau on WAOW-TV (ABC, Ch. 9), in Madison on WKOW-TV (ABC, Ch. 27), in La Crosse on W..

Notebook: Knee Bothering Robinson

Wide receiver Koren Robinson was added to the 53-man roster on Tuesday, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he would be limited in practice this week with soreness in the knee that was operated on during the offseason.

Robinson experienced soreness in his knee in the middle of last week and wasn't fully healthy by the end of the week. That, combined with the rustiness from not having played football for a year, kept him from being activated for Monday night's game in Denver. McCarthy said it would again be an end-of-the-week decision on whether he will be active this Sunday in Kansas City.

"That's as close to live action that he's had, the ability to practice," McCarthy said. "We had five practices last week. That's a lot of work for someone that's just coming here for the first time. Maybe take a couple weeks to get that under control. It's just something you have to watch and see."

To make room for Robinson on the roster, the Packers placed rookie running b..

Notebook: Favre Hits Big On Two Deep Throws

DENVER - It's safe to say all the supposed doubts about Brett Favre's arm strength will cease for a while.

Favre threw two absolutely perfect deep balls on Monday night in Denver, both resulting in long touchdowns. His 79-yarder to James Jones in the first quarter was just a prelude to his 82-yarder to Greg Jennings on the first play of overtime in the 19-13 victory over the Broncos.

Two weeks ago against Washington, Favre underthrew a handful of deep passes when he had receivers open, and two of those were intercepted, leading to questions about whether he's lost some arm strength in his 17th season.

"What did I say after the press conference? You can't base it off of two or three throws," Favre said after the game in his usual give-and-take with the throng of reporters. "I underthrew them, I took ownership of it. I knew it had nothing to do with my arm strength. It was just one of those days."

And Monday was one of those nights his longtime teamm..

Grant Helps Ground Game Take Off

DENVER - Opportunity can knock in the NFL at any time, and it was Ryan Grant's turn to be ready on Monday night.

The Packers' No. 2 running back went from substitute to workhorse in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos, and the youngster out of Notre Dame earned himself a starting role in the offense with his productive play in the 19-13 overtime victory.

Taking over for an injured DeShawn Wynn, Grant rushed 22 times for 104 yards, jump-starting what had been the league's lowest-ranked rushing attack and giving the Packers their first 100-yard rusher in 11 games.

Like most backs do after a good game, Grant credited his offensive line for giving him the holes and creases. But Grant deserves plenty of credit too for putting a late fourth-quarter fumble at Minnesota behind him and answering the bell on Monday night.

"We were able to do some things, stay consistent, and stay to our game plan," said Grant, who was named next week's starter by H..

Game Review: Quick Strike Wins OT Thriller

DENVER - The Green Bay Packers didn't score the entire second half on Monday night but then needed just one play in overtime to beat the Denver Broncos.

Brett Favre stunned the 77,160 fans at Invesco Field at Mile High and a national television audience with a breathtaking 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on the first snap of overtime, lifting the Packers to 19-13 victory that will rank as one of Favre's most thrilling and only add to his Hall of Fame legacy.

Having just watched the Broncos drive 89 yards in the final 2 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter and tie the game at 13 with a run-on field goal on the final play of regulation, the Packers won the overtime coin toss and wasted no time going for the win.

On first down from his own 18, Favre ran a play-action fake with a short roll to his left. Jennings had a step on Denver cornerback Dre Bly down the left sideline and Favre let it fly.
AP Story: Packers Prevail 19-13 In Overtime

Graybeard Brett Favre certainly isn't running low on arm strength or signature moments.
On the first play following the kickoff in overtime, Favre connected on an 82-yard touchdown pass with Greg Jennings and the Green Bay Packers defeated the Denver Broncos 19-13 on Monday night.

"I feel like I've been on some better teams, but it's hard to doubt this team," Favre said. "That was fun. I can't wait to watch the tape."

Denver had tied the score at 13 on Jason Elam's 21-yard field goal as time ran out in regulation, setting the stage for yet another Favre comeback.

Green Bay won the coin toss and on the first play, Jennings was matched up in man-to-man coverage on the left side. Favre, who threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to James Jones in the first half, hit Jennings in stride at the Denver 40. Cornerback Dre' Bly had no shot at catching the speedy wide receiver who trotted into the end zone as Favre rushed to celebrate Green Bay's first 6-1 start in five ..

Forever Young: Favre Still Plays With The Passion, Fire Of His Youth

Sunday, September 9th. Game day.

The 2007 season is about to begin. Minutes before kickoff against the Philadelphia Eagles, Brett Favre sits in his locker, waiting.

He's going over the offensive game plan one last time, and waiting. He's thinking about the Eagles' defense, and waiting. He's thinking about throwing that first pass of the season, and waiting.

"I find that I'm more impatient now," said the 17-year NFL veteran. "I'm going over things in my head, but the anticipation...I can't wait to play the game. The down time to me is painful."

Philadelphia wins the coin flip and elects to receive the opening kickoff. Favre stands on the sideline, waiting.

The Packers defense stops the Eagles' drive in three plays, forcing a punt. Favre already knows the play before he steps on the field. He alerts his teammates and breaks the huddle. Favre makes sure the offense is set, sends his men into motion and examines the defense. He calls out the ..

Notebook: Robinson Will Be Game-Day Decision

Whether or not Koren Robinson makes his 2007 debut on Monday night in Denver will likely be a game-day decision.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy hinted on Saturday that Robinson is physically ready despite battling some soreness and rustiness in practice on Thursday. But McCarthy will also consider the game plan, and who he needs active on the 45-man game-day roster.

Receiver Ruvell Martin is listed as questionable on the injury report with a back injury, so Robinson could be needed as the No. 4 receiver if Martin can't play. He also has practiced as the kick returner this week.

"It's a combination of Koren being ready, it's a combination of the plan for the game. Also you factor in special teams," McCarthy said. "We've given Koren the opportunity as far as reps with the special teams and (at) receiver, Ruvell Martin missing a couple days of practice, it kind of worked itself out."

Players Prepping For The 'Mile High' Altitude

The Green Bay Packers know all about the high altitude they'll be playing in on Monday night, and they're doing everything they can to prepare for it.

The team's director of research and development, Mike Eayrs, gave a brief presentation of information from medical journals during the Friday morning team meeting that outlined the steps the players can take to prep their bodies for the thinner, drier air of the Rocky Mountains.

First and foremost is to hydrate the body. Denver is approximately 5,200 feet above sea level, or nearly a mile high (hence "Invesco Field at Mile High"), and breathing the drier air at high altitudes takes moisture from the body, forcing it to lose fluids faster.

The most common symptom of altitude sickness is a headache, and while that's commonly associated with breathing thin air, it's more often a result of dehydration from breathing dry air.

"They really want to emphasize us hydrating really well, starting right now up u..

Packers Honor Max McGee

Packers flags at Lambeau Field are flying at half-staff today through Monday in honor of the late Max McGee.

McGee, who passed away Oct. 20 at the age of 75, endeared himself to multiple generations of Packers fans, first during his 12-year playing career (1954, 1957-67) and later through his 20 seasons (1979-98) as a member of the radio broadcast team on the Packers Radio Network.

"Max was a prominent member of the Packers family for decades - as a player, a broadcaster, member of the Packers Hall of Fame and beloved alumnus," Packers Chairman Bob Harlan said. "We felt this was an appropriate way to honor his memory and contributions to the organization."

In addition to the flags, which include a large Packers flag on top of the northeast corner of the stadium and two Packers flags on Harlan Plaza (U.S. flags are unaffected), the team will broadcast a brief video tribute to McGee on Lambeau Field's TundraVision video boards during the club's next home game..

Packers Look To Continue Road Success

This week's trip to Denver begins the first of three pairs of back-to-back road games for the Packers in 2007, but playing six of their next nine games on the road isn't intimidating at all to this team.

"Fortunately for us -- obviously we're thinking about this game first -- but we're a pretty good road team," linebacker Nick Barnett said. "We've been on the road and been pretty successful. It's a tribute to the schedule and the coaches keeping us focused on the game, and the character in this locker room. So we just take it week by week, but we usually don't have a problem on the road games."

That's certainly true thus far during the Mike McCarthy era. In his first 10 road games as an NFL head coach, McCarthy is 7-3, including a four-game winning streak dating back to last year's victory in San Francisco on Dec. 10.

Last year the Packers had back-to-back road trips twice, first to Detroit and Philadelphia and then to Buffalo and Minnesota, and split them ..

Notebook: Defensive Line In Flux; Wynn Returns

The Packers' defensive line is in a state of flux right now with injuries to starting defensive end Cullen Jenkins and reserve defensive tackle Justin Harrell.

Jenkins, who injured an ankle taking a high-low hit from two Redskins back on Oct. 14, was limited in practice on Thursday and, according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy, "did not have as good a day as we had hoped." His status for Monday night's game is in question, though there are still two days of practice plus the travel day for him to improve.

Meanwhile Harrell, the rookie first-round draft choice, had an offensive lineman roll up on his legs during Tuesday's practice, spraining his ankle. He did not practice Thursday and already has been ruled out of this week's game after having played the previous two contests.

Fortunately the Packers have the depth to compensate for the injuries, having kept 11 defensive linemen on the 53-man roster.

Harrell's absence could lead to non-drafted rookie D..

Ground Game Needed To Finish

For all the angst over the Packers' 32nd-ranked running game, it's worth pointing out that the rushing struggles haven't been all that damaging with the team off to a 5-1 start.

And with one-third of the league's top nine ground games belonging to teams with records of .500 or worse (Minnesota, Oakland and this week's opponent, Denver), there's no magic to be expected if and when the running game gets going.

But that said, one area in which the Packers' unreliable running game has nearly proved costly, and in which the Packers would benefit greatly from more rushing production, is at the end of games.

In each of the Packers' last two victories, at Minnesota and vs. Washington, the offense has been on the field with the lead in the closing minutes, with a chance to pound the ball on the ground for a first down to kill the clock and seal the game.

But that hasn't been accomplished, and in both games it gave the opponent a chance it probably shouldn't..

Passing Attack Faces Another Tough Test

The Packers were well-aware of the talent in the Washington secondary heading into their matchup on Oct. 14, and that group helped produce Brett Favre's worst passing game statistically speaking in 2007.

But as Favre looks to get back on track following the bye week, he's got another ultra-talented defensive backfield in Denver to contend with.

The Broncos feature two veteran cornerbacks in Champ Bailey and Dre Bly, a pair that rivals the Packers' own Al Harris and Charles Woodson in any conversation discussing the best cornerback duo in the league.

Both are in their ninth year, and their first year together in Denver. Both acquired via trade, Bailey came over from Washington in 2004, while Bly came from Detroit this past year. They've combined for three of the Broncos' six interceptions thus far this season, but it's more their savvy and steady play that have vaulted the Broncos to No. 2 in the league rankings in pass defense, allowing just 165 yards per g..

Notebook: Practices Physical, Spirited Coming Off Bye

Any concerns about the Green Bay Packers resting on the laurels of their 5-1 start and being a little sluggish coming off their bye week have vanished over the first two days of practice this week.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he thought the practices on Monday and Tuesday this week were "probably our two best practices of the year," calling them both spirited and physical, and an indication the players are excited to continue building on the strong start to 2007.

"Success clearly helps that," McCarthy said. "It's important to everybody, but when you do have success, there's more energy. There's no doubt about it. I think it's part of the constant message of our football team of trying to improve. Our players are clearly into what needs to be done. I think that's a reflection of our structure, communication from the coaching staff and everybody being on the same page."

McCarthy said Monday's practice may have been "a little too physical" in some spots, but..

Poppinga Makes Cameo As NFL Network Analyst

Brady Poppinga didn't exactly get away from football during his time off over the bye week.

But the Green Bay linebacker wasn't out tackling anyone. He was trying to tackle the world of football broadcasting instead.

Poppinga spent time last week at the NFL Films headquarters outside Philadelphia to tape a segment of the NFL Network show Playbook NFC, which aired last Friday evening.

As a guest analyst on the studio show hosted by Brian Baldinger and Sterling Sharpe, Poppinga was asked about Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and the Washington Redskins defense, among other topics. Diving into film study and playbook analysis was rather natural for the high-intensity, all-football-all-the-time Poppinga.

"You just talk football, and I do that my whole life," he said. "It's not anything different."

Poppinga got a kick out of seeing all the goings-on at the NFL Films headquarters. A player who is knowledgeable about the game and i..

Notebook: Robinson Easing Back Into It

The Packers aren't going to make any rash decisions about whether or not to activate wide receiver Koren Robinson for next Monday's game at Denver.

But the steps being taken with Robinson this week will allow them to see just how ready he is to play after being away from football for a full year.

Robinson returned to the practice field on Monday for the first time since October 2006. He was reinstated last week after a one-year suspension, and even though the team wasn't practicing, Robinson arrived in Green Bay last Thursday to begin getting a refresher course on the playbook from offensive quality control coach Ty Knott.

The Packers began implementing their game plan for the Broncos on Monday, their first of five practices before the game, so Robinson will have time to process everything as the week continues.

"This is probably the perfect week for him to come back just because of the way we're spreading out the installation," Head Coach Mike McC..

AP Story: McGee Typified The Old Days

Max McGee never would have made it in Roger Goodell's NFL.

Then again, neither would many of his contemporaries.

McGee, who died Saturday after falling from the roof of his home in Minnesota, was a symbol of a league that no longer exists. One in which players went out on Saturday night, caroused to their heart's content, and then showed up on Sunday and played their hearts out.

From Bobby Layne through Paul Hornung and Joe Namath to dozens of lesser known players like McGee, the routine was liquor, ladies and late hours. Players were rarely fined, no one ever heard of steroids, and no one ever got suspended -- except Hornung and Alex Karras, for what was then (and now) the one great sin, gambling.

McGee was the third wide receiver on Vince Lombardi's great Green Bay Packers, who won three NFL titles between 1961-65, then the first two Super Bowls.

He was one of the heroes of..

AP Story: Former Packers Great Max McGee Dies In Fall

Max McGee, the free-spirited Green Bay Packers receiver who became part of Super Bowl lore after a night on the town, died when he fell while clearing leaves from the roof of his home. He was 75.

Police were called to his home in suburban Deephaven on Saturday afternoon, Sgt. Chris Whiteside said. Efforts to resuscitate failed.

"I just lost my best friend," former teammate Paul Hornung told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "(His wife) Denise was away from the house. She'd warned him not to get up there. He shouldn't have been up there. He knew better than that."

McGee caught the first touchdown pass in Super Bowl history in 1967, a game he expected to watch from the sideline. When it was over, he had caught seven passes for 138 yards and two TDs and Green Bay -- coached by the great Vince Lombardi -- had beaten the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10.

"Now he'll be the answer to one of the great tri..

Lambeau Field A Great Venue for Packers' Special Events Department

Since the renovation of Lambeau Field was completed in 2003, the stadium and its accompanying Atrium have hosted thousands of special events, from corporate meetings, to weddings, to fundraisers and the like.

The schedule has been steadily busy over the past four years, and special events sales manager Beth Haws said that has led potential patrons to believe availability at the Atrium is difficult to come by.

But that's not necessarily the case.

"A lot of people think we're sold out, just like every game is, so they think, 'Oh, you can't get in there. Don't even bother to call,'" Haws said. "But we still have a lot of dates available. We are busy and we do around 1,000 events a year, but we have room."

The availability is due in part to the expansion of special events venues over the past couple of years. Not only are the Atrium floor, Legends Club and balcony utilized for special events, but the indoor club seating area known as Club 1919, the Mil..

Consummate Pro: Driver Etching Name In Packers' History

Green Bay faced a critical third-and-three at the San Diego 37-yard line while trailing, 7-0, in the second quarter. Brett Favre completed a 16-yard pass to his favorite target for a first down. That man was the ever-reliable Donald Driver.

On the surface it was just another catch by the nine-year veteran as he would record six receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown in the game. However, that reception was his 214th at Lambeau Field, passing Antonio Freeman (213) for most receptions at the historic stadium.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," Driver said after that game, a 31-24 Green Bay victory. "I'm still taking it in. Today Coach (McCarthy) gave me a ball and said I passed one of my idols, Antonio Freeman. I think I'm going to have to cherish that moment for a while."

Driver has been quietly climbing all of Green Bay's receiving lists. Through the first six games of 2007, his career numbers stand at 457 catches for 6,341 yards and 38 touchdowns. He's just six ya..

Robinson Says He's Ready To Play, Right Away

Wide receiver Koren Robinson feels that he's in the best shape of his life, and he says he's ready to help the Packers immediately, perhaps as soon as Green Bay's first game after the bye week on Monday, Oct. 29, in Denver.

"Football shape, I feel like I'm right there," Robinson said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, after he was officially reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell following a one-year suspension. "If I'm not there, I'm close. It should only take me a couple of practices or a game to be there. But I feel like I can come in right away and help out."

Robinson's reinstatement becomes effective on Thursday. The wide receiver joined the Packers in September 2006 but was suspended shortly thereafter for a repeat violation of the league's substance abuse policy. The suspension was for an off-field, alcohol-related incident prior to his joining the Packers.

Robinson said he was told last Sunday by Goodell he'd be reinstated after..

Panel Discusses Off-Field Issues With Players

Just before heading out for their five days off during the bye week, the Green Bay Packers held a team meeting on Tuesday that gave them something to think about outside of football.

Guest speakers Eugene Robinson, Bill Curry and Vai Sikahema, who all played for the Packers at some point in their NFL careers, held a roundtable discussion moderated by former Packers center and current TV and radio broadcaster Larry McCarren during which they openly shared some of the pitfalls and personal setbacks they experienced during and after their careers.

"Each of them had a very powerful message about life, about mistakes they've made, about ways to correct things they've had happen and things that they'd do differently," defensive end Aaron Kampman said. "It was things that they've learned from their experience transitioning out of football and into real life."

The meeting wasn't meant to be a "watch out" for this-or-that discussion - "The guys don't need that. They..

Notebook: Run Game Under Microscope

It's becoming a familiar refrain, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy once again reiterated what the Packers' stagnant running game needs to get going, and it's not just one thing.

It's better fundamentals by the blockers, consistency in who the feature back is, and a commitment to the run game by the play-caller himself, McCarthy.

"When you don't run the football, it compounds itself and your problems are ahead," McCarthy said on Monday. "That's what we're focused on, because you want to have all your horses."

The ground game produced just 56 yards on 20 carries in Sunday's win over the Redskins. That marked the fourth time in six games the Packers rushed for fewer than 60 yards.

McCarthy said the running game will get its due evaluation during the bye week. From a schematic standpoint, the most frustrating thing for McCarthy has been seeing the same blocking mistakes made over and over. Whether it's properly cutting off the backside pursuit or effective..

Packers Put Clamps On Cooley

The Green Bay Packers' defense did about all they could in the first half Sunday except for one critical thing: stop Chris Cooley.

Seemingly every time the Redskins' offense was in need of a big play they would look to their talented tight end and for good reason. In the first half alone, Cooley caught seven balls for 97 yards and played a particularly huge role in his team's second scoring drive with two first-down receptions before capping the drive with a 14-yard touchdown catch.

Despite these gaudy numbers, it's not as if the Packers defense didn't come to play in the first half. After all, a unit can't do much better than holding running back Clinton Portis to 32 yards on 11 carries and limiting Washington's wide receivers to a single catch by Antwaan Randle El for 12 yards. It also didn't help that the Packers offense was on the field for 11 minutes, 37 seconds, compared to 18:23 for the Redskins' offensive unit.

At any rate, the Packers found them..

Missed Opportunities Don't Come Back To Haunt

Three weeks ago, the Packers blew a goal-to-go situation from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter against San Diego but managed to overcome the missed opportunity and win anyway.

Sunday against Washington, more than just one scoring chance was squandered, and once again the Packers were fortunate those opportunities didn't come back to bite them in a 17-14 victory at Lambeau Field.

The biggest opportunity that got away came early in the fourth quarter. With the Packers up by three, safety Atari Bigby forced a fumble by Redskins running back Clinton Portis. It was recovered by A.J. Hawk, giving Green Bay a first-and-goal at the Washington 9-yard line.

A touchdown would have gone a long way toward icing the game, and it appeared the Packers had one on second down when Brett Favre lofted a pass to the back of the end zone to tight end Bubba Franks. He leaped to make the catch while making contact with Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot and got just one foot down..

Notebook: Woodson's Alert Recovery Averts Disaster

Charles Woodson is known as a smart, heady player, and his instincts may have avoided a potentially disastrous turnover late in the fourth quarter on Sunday.

With just under three minutes left, the Packers led 17-14 and Washington lined up to punt. Woodson saw Derrick Frost's low kick heading right for Green Bay teammate Jarrett Bush, who was on the outside blocking the Redskins' gunner.

Sure enough, the ball bounced and hit Bush, making it a live ball. But Woodson, anticipating the play, had reacted quickly and pounced on it right away at the Green Bay 42-yard line, preventing a major blunder.

"I tried to warn him, tell him to get out of the way, but the ball hit him right away," Woodson said. "I was right there. Luckily it hit him and it didn't bounce too far."

The Packers were unable to run out the clock, but upon punting it back to the Redskins, they took over on their own 20. Had they recovered the bouncing punt, they would have needed only on..

Game Review: Defense Propels Packers To 5-1

As the 2007 season continues to unfold, the Packers may look back on Sunday's second half against the Washington Redskins as the moment their championship-caliber defense truly took root.

Because the defense came up big seemingly countless times, including Charles Woodson's game-changing 57-yard fumble return for a touchdown, to foster an intense 17-14 victory that puts the Packers at 5-1 and tied for the best record in the NFC heading into their bye week.

"I thought our defense was outstanding," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I thought they were the key to the victory today, particularly down the stretch. I thought they got stronger and stronger as the game went on."

That they did on a drizzly day in front of 70,761 at Lambeau Field, beginning with a momentous turnover late in the third quarter.

Just two plays after the Packers had pulled within 14-10 on a Mason Crosby field goal, the Redskins ran a reverse to speedy wide receiver Santana Moss. B..

AP Story: Packers Hold Off Redskins For 17-14 Victory

Cornerback Charles Woodson scooped up the ball -- and lifted the spirits of the Green Bay Packers' suddenly sagging offense.

Woodson's 57-yard fumble return in the third quarter gave the Packers the go-ahead touchdown in a 17-14 victory over the Washington Redskins at soggy Lambeau Field on Sunday.

"It was a big play today," Woodson said. "Hopefully, I have many more to come."

With Green Bay's previously top-ranked passing offense sputtering and the Packers trailing 14-10 late in the third quarter, defensive lineman Corey Williams stripped Redskins receiver Santana Moss on an end-around. Woodson picked up the ball and ran to the end zone.

The Packers (5-1) won despite an off day from Brett Favre, who became the NFL's career interception king with an errant pass picked off by Redskins safety Sean Taylor in the third quarter.

"I could care less," Favre said. "We won the game. I'm glad it's over, just like the other records. We're 5-1, so it ..

Notebook: Coston Questionable, Moll Ready At RG

There could be two fill-in starters on the offensive line for the Packers on Sunday.

Right guard Junius Coston sprained an ankle during a goal-line drill during Thursday's practice, and he sat out practice on Friday. He is listed as questionable on the injury report, and second-year pro Tony Moll would start in his place at right guard if Coston can't play.

That comes on top of a change at center this week, with Jason Spitz stepping in for Scott Wells, who fractured an eye orbital bone in last week's loss to the Bears.

"We expect them to go in and play at a high level," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday. "We're not going to change anything we're doing as far as our approach to the game. It's a product of how you rep your linemen during the course of training camp and so forth. When you're the sixth, seventh, eighth lineman on the football team, you have to play multiple positions, and it prepares you for these situations."

Offense Matured As Opening Drive Clicked

It's not something that has happened very often over the past couple of seasons, and the achievement perhaps wasn't duly noted in the wake of the loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday.

But the Packers began that game with an 83-yard drive for a touchdown. Right out of the tunnel, and right down the field.

A start like that has happened only twice in the 21-game Mike McCarthy era, and for an offense that has as many as six key players with three years or less of NFL experience, it's a true sign of growth to be able to get things clicking right from the first snap.

"It's a very important element in terms of this offense's progression," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. "Confidence is a critical factor in any sport, and when you taste success early you kind of whet your appetite a little bit and you feel like you can continue to do so, and you're just going to build momentum in the course of the game."

First Loss Not Lingering

There's an old saying in sports that you can't let a team beat you twice.

For the Green Bay Packers, that's not a reference to their rematch with the Chicago Bears on Dec. 23, when they'll get a chance head-to-head to avenge their 27-20 loss last Sunday.

It actually applies to this week, meaning the Packers can't let that loss to the Bears lead to another defeat, by dwelling on a game they clearly let slip away to their arch-rivals.

"It's just one step back," tight end Bubba Franks said. "It's not like we took two steps back. It was only one game. We felt like we should have won the game, but overall they scored more points than we did. You take it, you learn from it, and you move on to the next game."

That next game is against the 3-1 Washington Redskins, another NFC team like the 4-1 Packers off to a strong start. It's a game that could have significant tiebreaker implications in playoff scenarios as the season unfolds, something the Packers know..

Redskins' Defense Poses Major Challenge

Pick a ranking, any NFC ranking, and they all look pretty good for the Washington Redskins' defense.

First in the NFC in total yards per game. First in passing yards per game. Tied for first in first downs allowed. First in third-down efficiency. First in points allowed.

Coming off back-to-back NFC North games against formidable defenses in Minnesota and Chicago, the 4-1 Packers have perhaps an even greater challenge on their hands in the 3-1 Redskins.

Adding to the intrigue of the matchup is the fact that the Packers' offense is second in the NFC in total yards and first in passing yards, so as the old saying goes, something's gotta give.

"I think their defense in general is playing by far the best football we've seen up to this point," Packers quarterback Brett Favre said. "It's not a knock against the teams we've played. But they really haven't had injuries, they have a lot of veterans, they have high (draft) picks.

"I could see them in..

Notebook: Harrell Gets His Feet Wet

When defensive tackle Justin Harrell took the field last Sunday, it had been 12 months and 21 days since he had played in a regular-season game, and it felt every bit that long to the 2007 first-round draft pick.

"You never want to sit on the sideline," said Harrell, whose last meaningful game action came for the University of Tennessee, on Sept. 16, 2006, against the Florida Gators before having surgery on his torn bicep. "Being a competitor, you want to go out there and try to help your team win. With all the success the team was getting, you know you're a part of it but you really don't feel like you're a part of it until you're out there doing things."

Harrell got off to a slow start in training camp, coming back from the injury, and he was inactive the first four weeks of the season. He made his debut in the defensive tackle rotation against the Bears last Sunday and was solid, though unspectacular.

Harrell played nine snaps on defense and provided a g..

Packers Participate In NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle

Green Bay Packers players spent their day off joining the Brown County United Way and the Wisconsin National Guard Challenge Academy in attempting to make a difference in the community on Tuesday.

Al Harris, Nick Collins, Jon Ryan, Desmond Bishop, James Jones, Rob Davis, Chris Francies and Ryan Powdrell were at The Golden House in Green Bay, lending their hands to make improvements to the home for battered women and children.

Players seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves while spreading woodchips, planting a garden, assembling outdoor toys and serving dinner to clients and their children who are staying at the Golden House.

"Whenever you can give back I think it's important that you give back," said Harris. "You get a chance to give back and help out. We've been blessed and, you know, one hand washes the other."

Morency Rounding Into Form

He's not fully healthy yet, and the upcoming bye week will probably do wonders for his sore knee, but running back Vernand Morency is almost back to his old self. Almost.

There were moments in last Sunday's game against Chicago when Morency appeared to show the shake and elusiveness that made him such an intriguing running back prospect last year, his first in Green Bay.

Known for his quick first step and burst to the hole, Morency ripped off runs of 10 and 15 yards on back-to-back plays in the second quarter, one off the left side and the other off the right. He got well into the second level of the defense both times and was tackled by safety Brandon McGowan. The two runs set up Brett Favre's 41-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings.

Then on the Packers' next series, he caught a short dump-off pass over the middle and darted and danced his way to a 17-yard gain, again forcing the safety McGowan to make the tackle. Two other short receptions on that drive h..

Watch 'The Mike McCarthy Show' On Packers.com!

Notebook: Spitz To Step In For Injured Wells

The versatility of the Green Bay Packers' young offensive linemen is proving to be valuable.

On Sunday night against Chicago, Jason Spitz took over for Scott Wells at center late in the third quarter after Wells was poked in the eye on a third-down running play. On Monday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced that Wells has a fractured orbital bone and will in all likelihood miss Sunday's game against Washington, forcing Spitz into his first start at center.

But the second-year pro, whose 14 NFL starts to this point have all come at guard, is up to the task. The four offensive series he played at center on Sunday constitute by far his most extensive experience at the position, but with Wells nursing a mild hamstring strain the past couple of weeks, Spitz has taken a significant share of the practice snaps at center and feels ready.

"I've got enough reps during the preseason and during the regular week to work on my snaps, so that's not an issue," said Spitz, ..

Notebook: Close To A Miraculous Play

The prayer was almost answered. But almost didn't mean much.

Brett Favre's Hail Mary on the game's final play on Sunday night appeared to be grabbed simultaneously by Chicago safety Brandon McGowan and Green Bay receiver Donald Driver in the back of the end zone. But McGowan had the better grip and was able to establish control of the ball for the interception, despite the fact that Driver had his arms tangled in there as well.

The turnover, Green Bay's fifth in the game, ended the frustrating 27-20 defeat to the NFC North rival Bears. Favre's throw had come from the Chicago 32-yard line after the Packers had driven from their own 27 in the final two minutes to try to tie the game.

Driver did not address reporters after the game, but receiving mate Greg Jennings said it was just a matter of McGowan having leverage in his favor as gravity pulled them both to the ground.

"I know he had his hands on the ball," Jennings said of Driver. "It's one of tho..

Game Review: Miscues Aplenty In First Loss

There's no sugarcoating it. This one got away.

The Packers had a chance to bury their NFC North rivals early on Sunday night, but two fumbles prevented it. Then when they were protecting a lead in the second half, two more turnovers helped the Bears erase a 10-point deficit.

Add in some penalties and a couple of key plays by Chicago, and in the end the Bears scored 17 unanswered points to pull out a 27-20 decision to hand the Packers (4-1) their first loss in 2007 and stun the 70,904 in attendance at Lambeau Field.

"Games you're supposed to win, you've got to win," cornerback Al Harris said. "I think we should have won this game. We were supposed to win this game."

Early on it looked like the Packers would. On the game's opening possession, DeShawn Wynn broke off runs of 12 and 44 yards to set up his own 2-yard TD run just 3:59 into the game.

But the offensive rhythm was interrupted by a couple of eerily similar miscues by rookie receiver ..

Run Game Finds Success Early Before Sputtering

Entering Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, the Packers' ground game wasn't stuck in first gear.

It was more like locked in park.

Averaging only 54.3 yards a game on the ground, the Packers were ranked dead last in the National Football League. However, in a 121-yard effort, the Packers not only found a better gear but also a lot of open road.

Well, at least early on.

To put the first-half dominance in perspective, consider that it took rookie DeShawn Wynn, who was starting for the second consecutive week, only four plays to reach 59 yards in the first quarter. And though Wynn left the for the rest of the first half with cramps after those four carries, running mate Vernand Morency more than picked up the slack, rushing for 43 yards on nine carries.

At halftime, the Packers had already rushed for 102 yards, which surpassed the previous season high game total of 83 yards against the Giants.

According to Wynn, it was jus..

AP Story: Bears Rally To Hand Packers 1st Loss, 27-20

Brett Favre flirted with another record performance, all right.

Favre threw two second-half interceptions to tie George Blanda's career NFL record of 277, allowing the Chicago Bears to rally for a 27-20 victory at Lambeau Field Sunday night.

But Favre was responsible for only two of the Packers' five turnovers against a banged-up but ball-hungry Bears team -- a surefire recipe for an upstart team to cough up its undefeated record.

"We should have won the ballgame, but we made a lot of mistakes and they capitalized," Favre said.

Meanwhile, Bears coach Lovie Smith could say a few words that hadn't been uttered in Chicago in a while.

"We liked our quarterback play," Smith said.

Playing in his second game in relief of the benched Rex Grossman, Brian Griese did exactly what the Bears (2-3) wanted him to do -- nothing flashy, but just enough to win.

"He did a great job managing the game," Smith said. "Got us out of some tough p..

Notebook: Still Striving For Complete Game

It's not difficult for the Packers to stay grounded during the highs of their 4-0 start while at the same time staying optimistic about the remaining three-quarters of the regular season.

That's because the team firmly believes it hasn't played its best game yet. And it hasn't, judging by the flaws in each of the first four performances.

Against Philadelphia, the offense struggled to gain just 215 yards. The following week at the Giants, the running game had nine carries for zero or negative yardage. Back home against San Diego, a goal-to-go situation late in the fourth quarter was squandered. And last week at Minnesota, the defense was gashed for a handful of big plays and 155 rushing yards.

Whether or not a perfect or near-perfect performance is due this week against NFC North rival Chicago remains to be seen, but it's what the entire team is after as it begins the second month of the regular season.

"I think we've done some positive things on th..

Impact Of Turnovers Seen On Scoreboard

There's a lot of value placed on winning the turnover battle in the NFL. Come out on the plus-side of the turnover ratio, and the chances to win greatly improve.

But what a team does with the turnovers it gets, and what it allows its opponents to do with theirs, can be even more important in the winning equation. And that's an area where the Packers have turned their modest plus-3 turnover ratio into a monumental difference on the scoreboard.

Through the first four games in 2007, the Packers have eight takeaways against just five giveaways. But while Green Bay has turned those eight turnovers into 41 points, it has allowed its opponents to turn their five turnovers into just six points.

The fact that those numbers produce a 35-point differential and the Packers have won their four games by a combined 39 points is more than mere coincidence. And going up against a Chicago team on Sunday that has turned the ball over 14 times in four games will put turnovers,..

Blackmon Has Broken Foot, Again

It's hard to imagine anyone on the Packers with worse luck than cornerback and return man Will Blackmon.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Thursday that Blackmon broke his right foot in the final team drill during Wednesday's practice. It's the same foot Blackmon, a fourth-round draft choice out of Boston College in 2006, broke last year in May during the final mini-camp practice.

McCarthy didn't say how long Blackmon would be out. Team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie is conducting some tests on the foot to gauge the severity of the injury.

"It was very unfortunate," McCarthy said. "I feel terrible for Will. Will was coming on strong."

Blackmon had essentially won the job this season as the team's No. 1 kickoff and punt returner in the second preseason game against Seattle, running back a kickoff 83 yards to set up a touchdown and taking a punt back 16 yards. He was also competing in a crowded defensive backfield for the nickel cornerback, or N..

After Further Review, 'KGB' Gets Team Record

It turns out another record was set last Sunday at the Metrodome against the Minnesota Vikings.

After a film review by Elias Sports Bureau, the NFL's official statistician, Green Bay defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was credited with three sacks against the Vikings, which moved him past Hall of Famer Reggie White for the Packers' franchise record.

'KGB' now has 69 career sacks. White had 68 1/2 of his 198 career sacks during the six seasons he played for the Packers (1993-98).

"I'd be lying if I didn't say I was excited, because the guy whose record I broke is Reggie White," said Gbaja-Biamila, who was informed during Thursday morning's team meeting about getting the record. "We have a lot of similarities. He was very open about his faith and I'm very open about my faith. It's truly an honor to be able to pass his record."

At game's end on Sunday, Gbaja-Biamila had been credited with two sacks of Minnesota quarterback Kelly Holcomb. He got to him..

Clifton Quietly Provides Stability Along O-Line

Chad Clifton is best known as the Green Bay Packers' starting left tackle and as Brett Favre's blindside protector.

But did you know that he is also a champion fisherman? Or, at least, he would like to believe so.

"He thinks he's a great fisherman," fellow tackle Mark Tauscher said. "When the offensive line went on a fishing trip, he, with the help of three other people and four breaks to get water, rolled in a 90-pound halibut and he thought that was awesome."

Clifton, however, pointed out that it was 92 pounds and that he, alone, pulled the fish up to the boat in 10 minutes.

"I'm an angler. It's what I do. It's my life," Clifton joked.

Though he may have a future as a professional fisherman, for now Clifton will stick to his current day job. Which, by the way, he is also quite good at.

"He's an outstanding pass blocker," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. "He's a solid run blocker. He uses good footwork. He's quick out of ..

Notebook: Packers Expecting Bears' Best Shot

Despite the Chicago Bears' 1-3 start, none of the Green Bay Packers is about to write off the arch-rival just yet.

At 4-0, the Packers on Sunday night will have a chance to put the Bears four games out in the NFC North race with 11 to play. It's a huge opportunity for Green Bay against the defending conference champions, but it's also exactly why the Packers are expecting the Bears' best game.

"They're looking at this as the game to rebound," linebacker Brady Poppinga said. "If there is a game, this is the best one to do it."

The first thing Chicago needs to do to rebound is get healthy, and it's unclear how much progress will be made on that front this week. Safety Mike Brown and defensive tackle Dusty Dvorachek were lost for the season in Week 1, and several other starters on their vaunted defense have missed time due to injuries.

On Wednesday, linebacker Lance Briggs (hamstring), defensive tackle Tommie Harris (knee) and cornerbacks Charles Till..

Record-Breaking Ball Makes Its Way To Canton

The football Brett Favre threw to Greg Jennings for his 421st and record-breaking touchdown pass last Sunday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis went on display Tuesday morning at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The short version is that the ball was presented by Favre to Joe Horrigan, vice president of communications and exhibits at the Hall, on the sidelines on Sunday, went into Horrigan's bag, back to his home in Ohio, and then into a case at the Hall on Tuesday morning.

But there's a longer, much more entertaining version of the events.

"It was different," Horrigan said. "For a number of reasons."

It started with whether Horrigan was going to make it to the game on time. Scheduled to arrive at the airport in Minneapolis at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, which was cutting it close enough, Horrigan's plane circled above the city for 45 minutes due to the weather and finally landed at 11. With a pre-arranged car service waiting, Horrigan hopped in ..

Notebook: Frustrated With Fumbles

Head Coach Mike McCarthy has said after each of the four victories this season that the 2007 Green Bay Packers are by no means a finished product, and there's still plenty of work to do.

One of the most glaring deficiencies to come out of Sunday's win at Minnesota was the shaky ball security, as the Packers fumbled five times, fortunately losing only two of them.

"That's unacceptable," McCarthy said. "We had a couple instances where guys just didn't have the ball high and tight, and we're not happy about it. You can't play like that."

The three fumbles that didn't hurt the team were by running back Vernand Morency (the ball rolled out of bounds), receiver Greg Jennings (he recovered his own fumble) and running back DeShawn Wynn, who the coaches said lost control of the ball on a shovel pass and regained it, but the fumble did not show up in the official NFL statistics.

The two that did become turnovers were by tight end Donald Lee, after a receptio..
