Roster Close, But Not Quite Set

The 53-man roster for the season opener isn't quite set yet, but General Manager Ted Thompson addressed the roster as it stood on Sunday to a group of reporters in Lambeau Field's media auditorium.

The long and short of it is the Packers have a somewhat surprise inclusion at running back, a void for the moment at long snapper, and a bevy of talented linebackers representing probably the deepest position on the team.

Here's a quick look at those three segments:

Running back
Rookie Kregg Lumpkin, a non-drafted free agent out of Georgia, beat out not one but two veterans - Vernand Morency and Noah Herron - for the No. 3 halfback job.

Lumpkin got ample opportunity to show his skills during the preseason, leading the team with 38 carries for 153 yards (4.0 avg) and a rushing touchdown in the four games. He added seven receptions for 59 yards and another score, showing the coaching and personnel staffs his multi-faceted future potential.

Notebook: Linebackers Shine With Spots On The Line

However many linebackers the Packers ultimately decide to keep on their final roster, backups Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge and Tracy White didn't make the team's decision any easier as all three wrapped up the preseason with strong performances on Thursday night vs. Tennessee.

The trio finished as the top three tacklers against the Titans, as Hodge and White tied for the lead with nine stops each and Bishop finished third with seven tackles.

"They've got a tough decision upstairs," said Hodge, who has been backing up Nick Barnett at middle linebacker. "I know we are probably going to keep six, but I'm not sure. All I know is that I played my butt off, I practiced my butt off, and I put my best foot forward. Whatever happens, I'll live with it."

In 2007, the Packers carried just five linebackers, with Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Brady Poppinga starting and Bishop and White backing them up. Hodge was on injured reserve.

Game Review: Preseason Ends With Wild Finish

It was a quick night for the starters, and a dramatic one for the backups.

The Packers' No. 1 offense scored on its only snap for an early lead Thursday, and then watched the reserves rally with a touchdown on the game's final play, only to come up short when the 2-point conversion failed in a 23-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans that wrapped up the 2008 preseason in front of 69,744 fans at Lambeau Field.

Much of the night was focused on backup quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, who had their struggles against Tennessee's No. 1 defense in the first half. But, trailing 23-15 in the fourth quarter, both quarterbacks put the Packers (1-3) in position for the tying score.

"I think both our young quarterbacks were in some tough spots," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "They kept battling. They did some good things. It takes time to develop young quarterbacks and that's where we are. I'm excited about their future, but we've got work to do."

AP Game Summary: Titans Hold Off Packers 23-21

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers needed only one play to show that he's ready to go. But Vince Young still doesn't quite seem warmed up for the regular season, even after the Tennessee Titans' 23-21 victory over Green Bay in Thursday's preseason finale at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on his first -- and only -- play from scrimmage, then spent the rest of the evening holding a clipboard and playing catch on the sideline.

"We're definitely ready," Rodgers said. "We had a good performance last week. One-and-done this week."

Young made a few big plays but failed to capitalize on several scoring chances despite playing with good field position against the Packers' defensive reserves.

Young drove the Titans inside the Packers' 10-yard line four times in the first half, but Tennessee came away with only three field goals. Young led the Titans' No. 1 offense to only two field goals in Tenne..

No. 1 Offense Strikes On First Play, Packers Trail Titans 16-7 At Half

Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the offensive starters knew coming into Thursday night's preseason finale against Tennessee that they would get very limited action, but even they had to be surprised with how brief a night it was.

Rodgers connected with wide receiver Greg Jennings on the first play of the game for a 68-yard touchdown. The play-action pass from Rodgers went just over the fingertips of Titans CB Nick Harper and free safety Michael Griffin overran Jennings, leaving him with an easy path to jog the rest of the way down the sideline for the score.

"Aaron threw a perfect ball in the hole, and the safety came down for the interception instead of playing the ball, and it worked out in our favor," Jennings said.

The offense's night concluded with the one-play scoring drive. Running back Ryan Grant, who missed the first three preseason games with a hamstring injury, started but his duties were limited to the fake on the play-action.

Jordy Nelson Training Camp Diary - Part V

Rookie wide receiver Jordy Nelson is going through his first training camp in the NFL, and Packers.com will check in with him periodically the next few weeks to get his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Nelson was a consensus All-America selection at Kansas State, and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007. He posted school records as a senior with 122 receptions for 1,606 yards after beginning his career with the Wildcats as a walk-on safety.

In the Packers' 27-24 win at Denver last Friday, Nelson caught one pass and returned a kickoff 24 yards.

I feel like training camp went well. It was like I expected it would be. I expected it to be hard coming into it and it was difficult. It was the way an NFL camp obviously should be, and it was great to get in here and experience the first one.

Training Camp Report: Schedule Made For A Different Camp In '08

The Green Bay Packers had fewer training camp practices this summer than they normally do, and that schedule had both its advantages and disadvantages over the past month.

On the plus side, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said the tempo and energy of training camp was improved over his first two seasons, and having fewer workouts played into that.

"I felt our football players were out here working to improve. They weren't out here trying to survive," McCarthy said Tuesday following the last official training camp practice. "They were thriving individually, and I think that's important and I think the schedule helped them."

On the minus side, McCarthy felt the schedule was disjointed, mostly because the Packers' first preseason game was slated for Monday Night Football on Aug. 11. That forced the team to have its first practice on July 28, a bit later than usual, and led to all four preseason games being played in 18 days, without a full week in between any of the ..

Lumpkin Looking To Impress In Finale

Thursday night's preseason finale against Tennessee will likely include only a series or two of action for the Packers' starters, which will provide for plenty of meaningful playing time for the remainder of the roster. Despite facing an uphill battle in a talented backfield, rookie running back Kregg Lumpkin will be one of those players hoping to make an impression on the coaches in the last opportunity before Saturday's final roster cutdown.

Lumpkin, who signed with the Packers in May as a non-drafted free agent out of Georgia, has led the team in rushing this preseason with 28 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown, and has added three receptions for 26 yards and a score.

"I think Lumpkin has had a steady climb," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I just go from the first day with pads and how he did in the blitz drills and things like that. Then the Family Night scrimmage, he had some opportunities, he did some good things, but then didn't take advantage of some opp..

Remembering Gene Upshaw

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- His big, booming voice was a familiar presence in the long halls of the NFL Players Association offices. Even when you couldn't see him, you could hear him coming. Perhaps intimidating if judged solely by his 6-foot-5 frame, for those who knew him, he was far from that.

When he approached your office or cubicle, en route to getting his morning cup of coffee, he was just as likely to discuss life's trivial matters as he was to discuss official work business. Despite his large stature in the world of sports, the man was as personable and approachable as they come.

Gene Upshaw, one of the most influential men in the history of the NFL, a visionary leader and the longtime Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, passed away Wednesday night. He was 63.

A powerful figure in American professional sports and an extremely successful head of the players union, Upshaw passed away at his home in Lake Tahoe, Calif. with his wife, Terri, and..

Roster Spots On The Line Thursday

With one preseason game left and the starters expected to play only a series or two, the focus of Thursday night's contest against Tennessee will be the battles for the last handful of spots on the 53-man roster.

Final cuts must be made by Saturday afternoon, and perhaps this year more than any other in the Ted Thompson-Mike McCarthy era, the Packers will be forced to let go some quality football players who may end up on other teams' rosters before too long.

Here's a quick look at the positions where many of the final roster decisions are unsettled heading into Thursday's game:

Linebacker
Beyond the top four of Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Brady Poppinga and Brandon Chillar, the Packers have three other linebackers - Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge and Tracy White - who have proven they're NFL-caliber players.

But how many linebackers the Packers will keep is the key question. Keeping all seven would be a significant departure from the norm, bu..

Training Camp Report: Jones, Sitton Taking Positive Approach With Injuries

Rookie guard Josh Sitton and wide receiver James Jones will both be out this week with the knee injuries they sustained Friday night in Denver, but will be two of several players focused on getting back on the field for the season opener vs. Minnesota.
Sitton, who started the first three preseason games at the right guard spot, is listed as "week-to-week" with the knee sprain, but said he is feeling better each day.

"If you let yourself get frustrated by something like this, it's just going to affect you when you get back," Sitton said. "I've got to look at the positives. It could have been worse and I'm going to be back this season. I'm just kind of going day to day with it and trying to get better."

Sitton, who entered training camp as a backup at guard, impressed the coaches early on and was given the opportunity to earn the starting right guard position once injuries began to cause some shuffling along the line.

Training Camp Report: Injured Look To Heal Up

The word of the week on the injury front for the Green Bay Packers is caution.

With one preseason game remaining on Thursday, the Packers have several banged up players who, were this the regular season, would have at least a chance of playing. But essentially anyone hurt and in need of some recovery time is being held out this week by the coaching staff, with the goal of getting the team much healthier for the season opener vs. Minnesota on Sept. 8.

Aside from the situation on the offensive line, the walking-but-not-seriously-wounded for the Packers this week includes safety Atari Bigby (sprained ankle), cornerback Charles Woodson (bruised knee), receiver James Jones (sprained knee) and defensive tackle Johnny Jolly (hip flexor). All those players were injured in last Friday's game in Denver and will look to get healthy for the start of the regular season.

Offensive Line Handling Multiple Shifts

With rookie guard Josh Sitton out with a knee injury for this Thursday's preseason finale vs. Tennessee, the Packers will have a different starting offensive line for the fourth time this preseason, but the flexibility gained through all of the shuffling should pay dividends down the road for the team.

Sitton suffered a sprained knee during the second series of Friday night's game at Denver, and backup Tony Moll slid into the right guard spot with the first unit. The line was also without center Scott Wells, who sat out for the second time this preseason with a trunk injury, so Jason Spitz slid over to center from the left guard spot, where Daryn Colledge earned the starting nod.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Sitton and Wells are both week-to-week with their injuries, so it is expected that Moll and Spitz will start at right guard and center against the Titans.
Notebook: Offense Gets Boost From Jennings' Return

DENVER - For the first time this preseason, Aaron Rodgers had the full complement of wide receivers at his disposal and was able spread the ball around in the Packers' victory over the Broncos.

The offense benefited from the return of wide receivers Greg Jennings and Ruvell Martin in Denver. Jennings made his 2008 debut after missing the first two games with a knee injury and Martin was out last week at San Francisco after suffering a slight concussion/jaw contusion in the preseason opener vs. Cincinnati.
"I think we had a good rhythm going, and that's what we came over here to do," Jennings said. "We wanted to set the tone and set the tempo and move the ball down the field and make plays and get scores.

"I think we were able to come out and establish what we wanted to establish. I felt great. Any time you can get out there after not being out there since last year, it's definitely a big boost for myself and my confidence, and just for the team."

Game Review: Rodgers, No. 1 Offense Sharp In Win

DENVER - After last week's blowout loss at San Francisco, several players talked about how important Friday night's game at Denver would be to build some momentum and confidence with the regular season just over two weeks away. The No. 1 offense achieved that goal in the 27-24 win over the Broncos, but the first defensive unit failed to produce the type of performance they were looking for.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who struggled in his return to his home state last week against the 49ers, bounced back with an impressive showing, completing 18-of-22 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown for a 118.4 quarterback rating. He completed passes to nine different receivers as he led the No. 1 offense to scores on four of the five series they played.

"We got into a rhythm early and our tempo was good," Rodgers said. "The game kind of flowed a little bit, where last week maybe I was pressing a little much because I really wanted to play well. This week I realized I needed to ..

AP Game Summary: Packers Edge Broncos 27-24

DENVER (AP) -- Aaron Rodgers went from pathetic one week to just about perfect the next.

Brett Favre's replacement as Green Bay quarterback bounced back from a bad game at San Francisco to complete 18 of 22 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' 27-24 win over Denver on Friday night.

Rodgers led four scoring drives in his five possessions and was 16-for-19 for 178 yards against the Broncos' starters, including a 10-yard touchdown to Donald Driver on the game's opening drive.

He added a 1-yard sneak for a score against the Broncos' reserves to open the second half before giving way to rookie Brian Brohm.

The Packers (1-2) sorely needed this kind of night from Rodgers in the last true tuneup for the regular season. He was 9-for-18 for 58 yards last week against San Francisco and failed to get the Packers into the end zone in one half of action.

Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler was effective if not as accurate, leading Denver (1-2..

On Saturday night at San Francisco, Nelson got his first opportunity as a kickoff returner and posted returns of 56 and 58 yards. He added two receptions for 10 yards.

I thought kickoff return went well against the 49ers. We were able to make some big plays, and the guys up front did a great job of blocking. We were able to hit a seam and get a couple of big-yardage plays. Offensively it was obviously not the way we wanted to go out and perform. I think we have done wel..

Training Camp Report: Offense Looks To Rebound In Denver

The Packers have had a short week of preparation as they get ready to head to Denver, but in a game where they will see their most extensive playing time of the preseason, the offensive starters are anxious to get back out on the field after their struggles in San Francisco.

There weren't really any positives that emerged for the No. 1 offense from the 49ers game, as the unit managed just 46 yards of total offense and four first downs in 25 snaps.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday that the starters will play the entire first half against the Broncos, and possibly see action into the third quarter as well.

"There is only one way to go up after last week," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "It's converting third downs and making good decisions personally, and eliminating the mental mistakes. We're looking forward to doing that and hopefully putting some points on the board and just having a good taste in our mouth as we go into the regular season."

Transition To Pros Ongoing For Finley

As a third-round draft pick from the University of Texas, tight end Jermichael Finley was evaluated as a dangerous receiver whose speed and athleticism could stretch the field and cause match-up problems for opposing defenses.

The Packers still expect to see that, but before that happens, Finley must continue to develop the remaining - and shall we say less glamorous - skills a tight end needs to compete at an NFL level. That's been his focus since he arrived in Green Bay, and that transition to the pro game will continue for Finley during the final two preseason games.

"The offenses they come out of in college, they have certain things that are important," tight ends coach Ben McAdoo said. "When you get to this level -- the run game, the pass game, pass protection -- they're all equally important. You can't segment.

"You can't put one thing on the top shelf and something else on the bottom shelf. Everything has to be on the same shelf here. It's a lot of v..

Training Camp Report: Drops Have Got To Stop

The Packers' receivers will be the first to say they've dropped too many passes during training camp and the preseason games thus far.

But they're also the first to know there's no sense in dwelling on the miscues, because then they'll compound themselves.

"You just move on," said veteran receiver Donald Driver, talking about his own dropped third-down conversions in each of the first two games. "You have to put it out of your mind, because after that, you're not going to be able to focus if you're constantly focusing on the ones you did drop."

There's been no receiver more or less guilty than another of the occasional drop. Driver isn't shy about mentioning his two in the games, both on strong throws by Aaron Rodgers. Chris Francies had one that turned into a deflection and interception for Cincinnati back on Aug. 11.

Even Greg Jennings can't plead innocence despite missing the first two preseason games. He had one or two drops during the Family N..

Ryan Bounces Back After Tough Opener

For the first time during his three seasons in Green Bay, Jon Ryan is the team's lone punter in training camp. After getting off to a slow start in the preseason opener vs. Cincinnati, Ryan followed that up with a strong performance on Saturday night in San Francisco.

On a night where there weren't many bright spots for the Packers, Ryan finished with a 50.3-yard average on seven punts after averaging 37.3 yards on seven kicks in the preseason opener vs. the Bengals.

"I was happy with the way I punted on Saturday night," Ryan said. "I feel like I have been punting well all the way through training camp. I felt like that first game against Cincinnati I just got in a couple of bad situations and couldn't hit the ball the way I wanted it to."

One of those situations against Cincinnati came as Ryan punted from the Bengals' 44-yard line as he looked to angle the ball out of bounds deep in Bengals territory, but his punt went off the side of his foot for a 15-ya..

Training Camp Report: Hawk Week-To-Week With Chest Injury

For linebacker A.J. Hawk, not being out on the field is a feeling that he has grown unaccustomed to as he has never missed a game during his NFL or college career. But Hawk likely will be on the sideline again this week with a chest sprain he suffered in the preseason opener vs. Cincinnati.

Hawk, who missed Green Bay's game at San Francisco on Saturday, sustained the injury on a third-down play when he broke up a pass intended for a Bengals tight end. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday night after practice that Hawk will be week-to-week.

"It's definitely tough," Hawk said. "It's new to me, not being out on the field, but I'm slowly learning how to be smart and take care of your body and figure things out. I'll be all right.

"That's why we have the doctors and trainers around here that do a good job. Whether players like it or not, they are pretty conservative with what they are doing and they want to take care of players. I respect that and I respect ..

Grant Getting Closer, Preparing For Full-Strength Return

Running back Ryan Grant has not been medically cleared to practice yet, but he's getting closer by the day.

And when he does return from his hamstring strain, Grant says he'll be in great shape to handle the workload he'll be expected to take on this season.

"I'm right there," Grant said. "I'm with the coaches, with the training staff, doing everything they're telling me to do, probably a little more, pushing myself. I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure I'm prepared."

Grant, who missed the first week of training camp while his new contract was getting worked out, practiced for two days on Aug. 5 and 6 (three workouts total) before straining the hamstring.

He was back on the field Monday night in full pads for the early jog-through portion of practice, taking a few reps with the No. 1 offense, before he headed into the Don Hutson Center for his rehab work.

But in his rehab he's not "nursing" the injury by any means. He's trul..

Notebook: Nelson Flashes Big Returns

Jordy Nelson never returned a kickoff in his entire college career at Kansas State, but the rookie didn't look like a novice at it on Saturday night.

Nelson broke off two long kickoff returns against the 49ers at Candlestick Park, of 56 and 58 yards, to provide the Packers with one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal 34-6 preseason loss. Nelson's first long return set up a field goal, and the second would have provided at least three more points had the offense not turned the ball over.

Nelson did have some experience at Kansas State returning punts, and managed to break free then as well. Last season, two of his five punt returns went for touchdowns of 89 and 92 yards, and his skills in the open field appear to be carrying over to the pros.

"It's a little different than punt return but you just have to go out there and use your vision, and hopefully the guys up front will open up a hole, and the guys did that tonight and made it easy," Nelson sa..

Game Review: Much Work Remains

There aren't any numbers that make Saturday night's 34-6 preseason loss at San Francisco look any better.

Less than 200 total yards, six sacks, nine penalties, three turnovers and a 2-for-14 showing on third down all added up to the Packers' second straight loss, dropping Green Bay to 0-2 midway through the preseason. Games at Denver and at home against Tennessee remain, as does plenty of work for a team that left Candlestick Park a bit disgusted with itself.

"We just stunk," offensive tackle Mark Tauscher said. "You can't color it and put it in any other light. We flat-out stunk, and from an offensive standpoint, there's nothing you can say. We flat-out were no good."

For starters, it was a struggle for the Packers' No. 1 offensive unit, which played the entire first half. The group managed just 46 yards of total offense and four first downs in 25 snaps, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers (9-of-16, 58 yards, 64.1 rating) was sacked four times for losses totalin..

AP Game Summary: 49ers Top Packers, 34-6

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- J.T. O'Sullivan threw San Francisco's first scoring pass of the preseason and led the 49ers on back-to-back touchdown drives.

Whether that was enough to help him complete his long-shot bid to become the Niners starting quarterback remains to be seen.

O'Sullivan threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Josh Morgan and outplayed top competitor Alex Smith as the 49ers beat Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers 34-6 Saturday night.

"I'm going out there to try to play quarterback as well as I can and let it go from there," O'Sullivan said. "Unfortunately I don't get to make the decision."

O'Sullivan came into training camp third on the depth chart behind Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, and Shaun Hill. But O'Sullivan has started both preseason games for the 49ers and gave the best performance of the three in the first half against the Packers.
Jordy Nelson Training Camp Diary - Part III

Rookie wide receiver Jordy Nelson is going through his first training camp in the NFL, and Packers.com will check in with him periodically the next few weeks to get his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Nelson was a consensus All-America selection at Kansas State, and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007. He posted school records as a senior with 122 receptions for 1,606 yards after beginning his career with the Wildcats as a walk-on safety.

On Monday night vs. Cincinnati, Nelson caught two passes for 35 yards, and returned four punts for 31 yards in his NFL debut.

It was good to finally get out on the field and play a game to get a feel for kind of how things are going to go during the season. It's a little different than practice, but it was a good first game. I think with the Family Night, that showed us the kind of fans that we have so I wasn't surprised by the atmosphere. I think we practice at a very ..

Training Camp Report: Rodgers Heading Home

Aaron Rodgers wasn't even going to try to play it coy. He wouldn't get away with it anyhow.

When asked on Thursday after practice for his thoughts about going back home to northern California to face the San Francisco 49ers in Saturday night's preseason game, Rodgers started by saying, "It's just another game ..."

But the smile on his face said even he, having handled a potentially tumultuous situation like a pro the past few weeks, had no chance to downplay it. And the Chico, Calif., native and Cal-Berkeley alum doesn't want to, because it most certainly will be a special trip for Rodgers this weekend.

"This one is going to be fun," Rodgers said. "I've got a lot of family and friends coming down. It's three hours from my hometown, across the Bay from where I played college. The area is very special to me."

So is the opponent. Not only are the 49ers the team Rodgers grew up watching, but they're also the team that passed him over for the No. 1 pick..

Flynn Closing The Gap For No. 2 Quarterback Job

Brian Brohm will once again be the second quarterback to enter the game again this week when the Packers travel to San Francisco, but fellow rookie Matt Flynn's strong play of late has put him in position to compete for the backup quarterback job behind Aaron Rodgers.

Even though Brohm was a second-round pick and Flynn was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Flynn is in the mix for the No. 2 job.

"I think Matt's definitely closing the gap, there's no doubt about it," McCarthy said. "I think he's really been pushing Brian here probably about the last eight to 10 days.

"I think Matt is getting more comfortable. Brian was more comfortable quicker in the earlier part as far as the OTAs, understanding what we're doing. I think they're both good young prospects."

Neither player put up numbers that jumped off the stat sheet on Monday night, but McCarthy said both Brohm and Flynn showed some signs of progress...

Training Camp Report: O-Line Competition Continues

For the third straight training camp, the position group with some of the most intense competition is along the offensive line, with battles likely to continue on for the remainder of the preseason.

With starting center Scott Wells sidelined on Monday night vs. Cincinnati with a trunk injury, Jason Spitz slid over to the center position with Daryn Colledge starting at left guard and rookie Josh Sitton at right guard.

After being out for a week and half, Wells returned to the practice field on Wednesday night and reclaimed his starting center spot, so the re-shuffled line featured Spitz at left guard with Sitton remaining on the right side. Colledge worked with the second unit at left tackle with Allen Barbre at left guard.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday night that those five players will be competing for the three spots at guard and center, but didn't put a timeline on when a decision would be made during the preseason.

Notebook: Jackson Continues To Make Gains

With starter Ryan Grant sidelined with a hamstring injury, second-year back Brandon Jackson took advantage of his starting opportunity on Monday night with 44 yards on six carries, highlighted by two impressive runs.

Jackson's first big carry of the night came on the Packers' second possession when he made a nifty move to avoid Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko in the backfield and gained 16 yards.

On Green Bay's touchdown drive that gave them a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Jackson posted a 22-yard run where he broke free for big yardage after being held up by two defenders.

"I thought his second reaction, just breaking tackles, that is the Brandon Jackson that we all know and have watched grow up in front of us, so I think you'll see more of that as we go forward," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said.

Last year at this time, Jackson was a 21-year-old rookie getting a lot of reps because of injuries at the running back position, an experience tha..

Game Review: Signs Of Promise In Preseason Opener

No one was expecting the start of the Aaron Rodgers era to go off without a hitch, and it didn't.

But Rodgers made a solid starting debut in the 2008 preseason opener on Monday night, and the Packers' No. 1 defense showed the tremendous potential it has. So even though the 69,675 in attendance at Lambeau Field witnessed a 20-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, there were plenty of encouraging signs from the first units on both sides of the ball.

"I think we're off to a solid start," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I'm not jumping up and down. We didn't win the game number one. Number two, we came up on the short side of the turnover ratio. That's not what we're looking for as a football team.

"But there's a lot of productivity in all three phases and that's what we'll build off of."

Rodgers led the offense to two scores in his four series, putting the Packers up 10-0 in the first quarter.

AP Story: Bengals Edge Packers, 20-17

Aaron Rodgers shrugged off a shaky beginning as Brett Favre's replacement.

In his first start for the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers delivered a pair of scoring drives and a handful of highlights in a 20-17 preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night.

The Packers definitively handed Rodgers the keys to one of the NFL's best offenses after trading Favre to the New York Jets last week -- ending an ugly, monthlong divorce with one of the most beloved players in franchise history.

And despite spending most of the past three seasons holding a clipboard, Rodgers didn't show many signs of nerves in his first step out of Favre's shadow. The Bengals tagged Rodgers for an early interception off of a deflected pass, but he recovered to complete 9 of 15 throws for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Rodgers was greeted warmly by fans before the game, with a significant portion giving him a standing ovation.

Packers Trail 17-10 At Half To Bengals, First Units Look Strong

Aaron Rodgers completed 9-of-15 passes for 117 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the Packers' first units exited the game after four series each with a 10-7 lead on Monday night at Lambeau Field against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rodgers connected with WR James Jones for a 30-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter to cap a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive and give the Packers a 10-0 lead. Jones took a big hit after the catch from S Marvin White that jarred his helmet off, but regained his balance and went the remaining 15 yards for the score. Rodgers was 3-of-4 for 45 yards on the drive, the first unit's final series of the night.

"He had a number of opportunities that he took advantage of," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said at halftime. "I thought he did a good job of managing the huddle.
Training Camp Report: Rodgers Aims For Quality Start

For his first preseason NFL start, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is far less concerned about the amount of playing time he gets, and more focused on the quality of his playing time.

"I'd like to just get into a rhythm," Rodgers said after Saturday's practice, the final tune-up before Monday night's preseason opener against Cincinnati at Lambeau Field.

"If that means a couple drives, a quarter and a half, two quarters, I want us to get in a rhythm and hopefully move the ball productively. Get in, make some plays, stay healthy and get out."

Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his staff have not determined exactly how long the starters will play on Monday night, but it will be based on a rough number of plays.

McCarthy's greatest concern is the overall health of the time right now, with more than a dozen players missing practice due to injuries on Saturday. The coaching staff will work out the playing rotations in meetings on Sunday.
Rodgers also said ..

Jordy Nelson Training Camp Diary - Part II

Rookie wide receiver Jordy Nelson is going through his first training camp in the NFL, and Packers.com will check in with him periodically the next few weeks to get his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Nelson was a consensus All-America selection at Kansas State, and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007. He posted school records as a senior with 122 receptions for 1,606 yards after beginning his career with the Wildcats as a walk-on safety.

I didn't really feel that nervous on Sunday for the Family Night scrimmage because it was more of a practice-type deal, but I think there will obviously be some nerves when we go out there Monday and play a real game. I haven't really thought about Monday night that much. We've been progressing through the playbook, and to be honest with you, it seems like it has gotten here kind of faster than I thought it would. We haven't really started talking about the game yet, so not too ..

Training Camp Report: Connecting On And Off The Field

As Aaron Rodgers enters his first season as the Packers' starting quarterback, he inherits one of the most talented receiving corps in the league, and hopes the special connection that he has developed with third-year wideout Ruvell Martin will serve as one more benefit.

The bond between the two began in 2005, Rodgers' rookie season, when Martin was signed to the Packers' practice squad in November, and both players worked on the scout team in preparation for each week's opponent.

"The connection we formed when he first came in and was working the scout team a bunch has really carried over," Rodgers said. "I have a lot of trust in him as a player. We connect well personality-wise off the field. I just feel like when I throw the ball to Ruvell, he's going to be in the right position to make the catch."

Rodgers chuckled when he recalled a game where his comfort level with Martin resulted in him incurring the wrath of Head Coach Mike McCarthy. When starter Bre..

Jansen Gets The Early Nod

The training camp competition at long snapper barely lasted one week.

But now that J.J. Jansen remains the only long snapper in camp, he's not basking in the glow of job security. Such a thing doesn't really exist in the NFL when 31 other teams are also in training camp and you play one of the most specialized positions in the game.

"I wouldn't say it's my job to lose," said Jansen, who became the team's lone long snapper beginning with last Sunday's Family Night scrimmage, when in-house competition Thomas Gafford was released to correspond with Ryan Grant signing his contract. "I still need to go out and win it.

"If I don't go out there and perform, the same thing could happen to me. I like to take that edge every single day and look at this as an opportunity to improve and really get ready for the season."

Jansen, a non-drafted rookie free agent out of Notre Dame, was brought in after the draft to compete with Gafford to see who would succeed Rob..

Mark Murphy - Packers.com Live Chat Transcript

Mark is with us now so we will begin answering questions. - Posted by Chat Moderator of Packers.com

Mark, Many of us are both Paker fans and Brett Favre fans. This process was extremely painful for us. While we support the organization doing what is best for the team, doing it at the expense of loosing most beloved player seemed a very high price. It is extremly important to us fans and share holders that Brett's future with the Packers be presevered, not just from our point of view but also from his. That "HE" feels welcome in Lambeau field and a family member. It's no good if we feel that way but he doesn't. My question is how will you and the rest of the organization begin to reach out Brett and his family and heal the hurt so that our most beloved QB will be seen walking the halls of the Packer Hall of Fame and Lambeau Field 10 years from now.? Best regards, Bart - Posted by Bart Hobbs of Houston, Texas
Good morning, everyone. Thanks for joining us on Packers...

Additional Press Conference Notes

General Manager Ted Thompson knows that trading Brett Favre is a move that will be debated and scrutinized by fans for years to come, but his focus throughout the whole process has centered on doing what is best for the organization.

Despite being confident he is doing that, Wednesday's trade was by no means an easy move for him to make.

"This is in many ways sad that this is where it came to," Thompson said when asked if he was comfortable being known as the man who traded Favre. "At the end of the day though, I think all parties involved felt like it was the best solution to a very difficult situation. Hopefully we can do things going forward that maybe people will not remember that, but the answer to your question is no.

"I think our job is to do what we try to do every day: do the very best we can to put this team in a position to win games and to represent this community and this state and all the Packer fans around the country well. That's all you can..

Trade Was Best Resolution For All

Everyone wanted it resolved - the Packers organization, the players, and Brett Favre himself - and in what President and CEO Mark Murphy called a "bittersweet time" in franchise history, the legendary quarterback and the team he came to represent have gone their separate ways, for now.

The Packers traded Favre to the New York Jets late Wednesday night, and in addressing the transaction on Thursday, Murphy, General Manager Ted Thompson and Head Coach Mike McCarthy all agreed that, as uncomfortable as it is to trade an icon and future Hall of Famer, this was the best resolution for all parties involved.

"I think we're all sad to see Brett Favre's career as a Packer end," Murphy said. "We are glad that this matter has come to closure in a way that is good for the team and that is good for Brett.

"The key has always been we have to act in the long-term best interests of the organization, and I think every decision that we've made, that's been the backdrop."

Training Camp Report: Players Appreciate Some Closure

Even though the Brett Favre situation had not reached its final resolution Wednesday, the players were glad that their involvement in the saga was over.

In a team meeting on Tuesday night, the players were informed that Favre would not be playing for the Packers this season, and while that news was a surprise to some, it at least provided some measure of closure within the locker room.

"I think now we know what direction we're going in," cornerback Charles Woodson said following Wednesday's morning practice. "Last night's meeting was, I think as players, what we really needed. We got a definitive answer what it's going to be, and it's going to be the Green Bay Packers without Brett Favre. Now we can move on and focus on what we need to focus on.

"It's just time to get on with our business now. Now it's just about the Packers and not about the situation."

Players noted that last week, when Favre had submitted his reinstatement request but the commis..

Sitton Making Most Of Opportunity In Camp

One of the position battles garnering the most attention during training camp has been at left guard, where Daryn Colledge and Allen Barbre are competing for the starting position. But the strong play of rookie Josh Sitton thus far has brought on added competition at the opposite guard spot.

With center Scott Wells sitting out practice since last Friday night with trunk injury, the line has had to do some shuffling. Jason Spitz, who started seven games last season at right guard and entered camp as the starter there, has been shifting inside to center in Wells' place, with Sitton working as the No. 1 right guard.

After practice on Tuesday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Sitton has taken full advantage of the opportunity he has been given.

"That's why we're going to give him an opportunity to compete and win the right guard position, and really kind of take Daryn and Allen Barbre and Jason and really kind of work a three- or four-man rotation in the left guar..

McCarthy: Favre's 'Mindset' Not Right To Play In Green Bay

After roughly six hours of conversation with Brett Favre on Monday and Tuesday, Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he and Favre concluded the future Hall of Fame quarterback was "not in the right mindset" to play football for Green Bay.

That was the essence of the extended talks between McCarthy and Favre, which went well into the night Monday and resumed on Tuesday before practice. McCarthy said Favre had no qualms about potentially competing for the starting job with Aaron Rodgers, but that too much "damage" had been done over the past six weeks for him to want to fully commit to playing for the Packers.

"It's pretty complex as far as the way he feels, the chain of events, the path that we have taken to get here," McCarthy said. "It's not as simple as No. 4 running out there playing football."

So with that, Favre did not attend practice on Tuesday and instead returned to his house in Green Bay, where McCarthy said he and his family were meeting with Ge..

Training Camp Report: Grant Happy To Be Back

At this time last year, running back Ryan Grant was battling for a roster spot in training camp with the New York Giants. Tuesday he resumed his role as the starting running back for the Green Bay Packers with a lot more security.

Grant, who was an exclusive-rights free agent, came to terms with the team Sunday on a long-term contract extension after missing the first week of camp. While he was in uniform for the Family Night scrimmage, Tuesday afternoon brought his first taste of on-field action.

"It felt good to be out there and be out there with the guys," Grant said. "My wind felt good, and I'm just trying to focus on the little things like pad level. I don't have to really learn the offense this year, so that is a little easier, just knowing the plays so I can focus on my part."

Grant was acquired by Green Bay last season on Sept. 1 from the Giants for a sixth-round draft pick in a move that went largely unnoticed. With several injuries in the backfiel..

Family Night Notebook: Secondary Looks Sharp

Head Coach Mike McCarthy has talked about the defense being the starting point and common thread that will run through the team in 2008, and on Sunday night, several members of the secondary made an impact.

Rookie cornerback Pat Lee led the team with four passes defensed, including a nice play to break up an Aaron Rodgers pass intended for Greg Jennings to stop the first-team offense on its second drive and force a three-and-out. Then he put the finishing touches on another drive when he broke up a pass by Rodgers to James Jones on fourth down.

"It was a good night," Lee said. "Everybody was working hard and making plays. Everybody was looking comfortable out there, so it was good. The coaches came up to me and said I did good, so it was a good feeling to do that in front of 56,000 (people)."

As it is with most rookies, Lee's day wasn't all positive as he was flagged for a 38-yard pass interference call on the first drive of the night on Donald Driver insid..

Family Night Feature: Rodgers Ready For Whatever Comes Next

Several media reports on Sunday indicated that quarterback Brett Favre will be returning to Green Bay Packers training camp to compete for the starting job with Aaron Rodgers, and even though Head Coach Mike McCarthy did not confirm that will be the case when Favre is reinstated on Monday, Rodgers emphasized following the Family Night scrimmage that if a competition does result, he has no plans to just hand over the job he's held since Favre's retirement in March.

"I'm a competitor. I'm going to compete," Rodgers said. "This isn't going to be easy. It's going to be a dogfight, and I know if they do open it up to competition, not a lot of people will give me a chance. But I believe in myself, and I'm going to be the best I can be and let Coach decide from there."

McCarthy is scheduled to address the quarterback situation with the media at 8:15 p.m. on Monday from the Lambeau Field auditorium. He said he would talk with Favre before then, (after Favre takes his physic..

Training Camp Report: Team Awaits Family Night

For Green Bay's rookie players and other newcomers, tomorrow night's scrimmage as part of "Packers Family Night" at Lambeau Field will go down as one of the most memorable experiences of their careers.

Wide receiver Donald Driver, entering his 10th season, the longest tenure on the team of any player on the roster, can attest to the lasting memories that the night will provide.

"I always remember that one," Driver said of his first Family Night. "I would never forget. Coming out of the old locker room, I remember Brett (Favre) telling me that there is going to be more people here than I ever had at Alcorn State, and I was like, 'Aw, yeah right, whatever.' Then I walked out and saw 60,000-plus. It was amazing."

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said the format for Sunday night's scrimmage will be similar to last year, with the first-team offense facing off against the second-team defense, and then the second offensive unit will square off with the defensive starters...

Lee Learning Every Chance He Gets

Every step he takes on the practice field, Pat Lee is trying to learn.

That's why during almost any down moment of training camp, the second-round draft pick and highly touted cornerback out of Auburn can be seen talking to somebody - to one of the team's top receivers about how they run certain routes, to a veteran corner about how to play certain coverages, and to his position coach, Lionel Washington, for a little bit of everything.

He's trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible, and all that, combined with learning the defensive playbook, can admittedly be a little overwhelming at times.

"There's probably some plays where I forgot completely some stuff going through my head and where I'm supposed to go, but it happens," Lee said.

"Jennings and Driver, they help me out, where I'm supposed to be on the receiver when they run a certain route and stuff like that. Al Harris and Charles Woodson help me out. I ask them questions, I try to learn ..

O'Briens Gearing Up For Special 'Family Night'

For Lori and Daniel O'Brien of Brookfield, Wis., being able to attend Family Night at Lambeau Field with their seven children is a dream come true. That is only half the story for this family though.

The O'Briens' other seven children -- that's right, the seven that won't be at the Family Night scrimmage, along with the seven who will make the trip to Green Bay, take the meaning of family to a whole new level.

Lori and Daniel got their foster feet wet as their now-25-year-old biological daughter would bring troubled children to the O'Brien household. This care eventually led the O'Briens to answer the call of foster care.

"One day, this mother of one of the girls that would spend days at a time at our house came over and asked us to take her child in as a foster child because she didn't want to lose her child to the streets and drugs," Lori said. "So we did, and after that we got into foster care."
That one foster experience has led to exponential ..

Training Camp Report: Offense Redeems Itself In Two-Minute Drill

The defense's bragging rights in the two-minute drill only lasted half a day.

After failing to score any points during a pair of two-minute drives in the morning practice on Friday, the offense bounced back with a touchdown and field goal in its two possessions during the evening workout.

Most important to Head Coach Mike McCarthy, in both sessions the offense appeared to get the play calls and substitutions communicated properly, and the clock management was sound. The defense also handled its substitutions and calls fine, and was putting up a consistent pass rush.

"The first thing is the mechanics of two-minute," McCarthy said following the evening practice. "That's the most important part of the first time you do the two-minute drill, just as far as getting the personnel group in and everything, both sides of the ball. So I'm pleased with the start.

"The production offensively was better tonight than this morning."
That's for sure. In t..

Jackson Hopes Rookie Growing Pains Turn Into Gains

For the second straight training camp, running back Brandon Jackson finds himself working with the first team. After being thrown into the fire early last season as a rookie as the Packers dealt with injuries in the backfield, he is hoping that experience and a productive offseason will enable him to contribute even more in 2008.
