Notebook: Rodgers 'Couldn't Be Happier' To Secure Future In Green Bay

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has talked about his desire to be with the Packers for the long term, and that became a reality on Friday when he signed a contract extension with the team.

The fourth-year quarterback and the team agreed on an extension that will run through the 2014 season.

"I'm very excited knowing that my future is going to be here in Green Bay," Rodgers said. "I appreciate the commitment that they have made to me and I plan to reciprocate that commitment in my play and hopefully prove to them that they made the correct decision to give me this extension."

Rodgers has started all seven games this season and ranks seventh in the NFL with a 98.8 passer rating in his first season as the starter. He has completed 145-of-221 passes (65.6 percent) for 1,668 yards, 12 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Rodgers has not thrown an interception in five of seven games, and his 3-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio ranks third in the NFL beh..

Secondaries Have Thrived On Takeaways

When NFL teams prepare their game plans each week, they'll often look for an opposing defensive back who might be a weak link, one they can go after with their passing attack.

Good luck finding one at LP Field in Nashville on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans have no less than seven defensive backs between them who have combined for a whopping 23 interceptions in 2008, an indication there's virtually no one safe to "pick on."

In fact, four of the top five interceptors in the league this season will be playing in Sunday's game. Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson and safety Nick Collins, along with Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan and safety Michael Griffin, have four interceptions apiece, tied for the top mark in the NFL. The only other player with that many is St. Louis' Oshiomogho Atogwe.

In addition to that top quartet, Packers cornerback Tramon Williams has three interceptions, while Titans cornerback Nick Harper and saf..

Watch 'The Colledge Experience' On Packers.com!

Green Bay Packers guard Daryn Colledge takes fans to locations throughout Lambeau Field, interviewing his teammates one-on-one in 'The Colledge Experience.' Fans are able to participate in the webisodes by submitting questions for Colledge to ask his guests of the week. Topics covered on the program will range from personal to football, and anything else fans come up with.

In last week's debut, Colledge grilled fellow guard Jason Spitz from the Lambeau Field barber chairs about their State Farm commercial, sharing the same high school coach as Packers Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler (2007 inductee), and previewed the Indianapolis Colts game.

After a bye week hiatus, 'The Colledge Experience' returns this week with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Interviewed in the Lambeau Field golf simulator room, Rodgers talks about the transition from backup to starter, his karaoke skills and his Halloween costume plans.
Packers Prep For Titans' 1-2 Punch, Offensive Line

The Packers saw noticeable improvement in their run defense in back-to-back victories before the bye, but Sunday in Tennessee that will be put to the test against one of the top offensive lines in the league and an explosive Titans rushing attack.

Tennessee's statistics are impressive, as they enter Sunday's game with the No. 4 rushing offense in the NFL at 145.0 yards per game and lead the league with 14 rushing touchdowns. The Titans also lead the NFL with only two sacks allowed on the season, only one of quarterback Kerry Collins since he took the offensive reins in Week 2.

Rookie running back Chris Johnson is tops in the AFC with 626 rushing yards, and running back LenDale White has posted 327 yards and an NFL-best 10 rushing touchdowns.

"Excellent combination because they complement each other very well," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "We had a first-hand look at them in the preseason and they are off to a great start.

Notebook: Bigby Energizes Defense

In preparation to play Seattle in Week 6 following their three-game losing streak, several members of the defense noticed in looking back at last year's playoff victory over the Seahawks that the energy and emotion that helped make them so successful had been missing.

The defense certainly got some of that energy back in these last two victories over Seattle and Indianapolis, and the unit should get another boost of that with the return of safety Atari Bigby.

Bigby, who hasn't played since injuring his hamstring breaking up a pass in the back of the end zone in Detroit in Week 2, is perhaps the team's hardest hitter. Whether it's coming down into the box to provide run support or trying to separate a receiver from the ball downfield, Bigby puts everything he has into any contact he makes, and his presence should only add to the energy and emotion on that side of the ball.

"I think so," Bigby said. "I play with two chips on my shoulders. Everybody knows they..

Notebook: Packers Get Rare Chance To Knock Off Unbeaten Foe

The Green Bay Packers haven't faced an undefeated team with a record of 7-0 or better in almost 18 years, and although the team knows Tennessee will provide a tough test, several players talked about the added excitement that comes with the challenge on Sunday.

On Nov. 4, 1990, the Packers hosted the 7-0 San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field, and dropped the contest 24-20. This Sunday Green Bay will travel to Tennessee to take on the NFL's lone undefeated team, the 7-0 Titans.

Tennessee has outscored opponents 180-87 in seven games this year, and has allowed 12 or fewer points in five of those contests. Their all-around attack is evidenced by their No. 4-ranked rushing offense, the No. 4 passing defense and the No. 10 rushing defense through Week 8. The Titans have won 10 straight regular-season games, the longest current streak in the league.

"They are a great team and they are playing at a high level," wide receiver Greg Jennings said. "We have to come out..

Ground Game To Get Tested

With Ryan Grant slugging his way to more than 30 carries each of the last two games, for 195 total yards, the Packers' ground game continues to show signs it's about to take that next step.

Now, and the next few weeks for that matter, would be the perfect time.

Beginning Sunday in Tennessee, Green Bay begins a stretch of three straight games against defenses ranked in the Top 10 in the NFL against the run. The Titans are 10th, while the Packers' next two opponents, NFC North rivals Minnesota and Chicago, are second and sixth against the run, respectively.

That's as close to a murderer's row of run defenses as there is, and even though the Packers aren't concerned at the moment with anyone but the Titans, they're aware of how critical this stretch is.

"You've got your work cut out for you every week," guard Jason Spitz said. "There's no pushover team. Regardless of what the record is, regardless of what people say in the media, everyone's tough. Eve..

A Glance At What Lies Ahead

The season isn't officially at the midway point, with seven games down and nine to go, but the placement of the bye week makes the remainder the de facto "second half" of 2008.

Here's a week-by-week look at what lies ahead for the Packers, who are 4-3, tied for first place in the NFC North, and riding a modest two-game winning streak as they hit the road for three of their next four contests.

Sunday, at Tennessee - The Packers will try to knock the Titans from the ranks of the unbeaten. Tennessee is the league's lone remaining undefeated team, and like the Packers, the Titans most recently beat AFC South power Indianapolis rather convincingly.

Coming off their bye, the Packers are getting healthier and may be catching Tennessee at the right time, on a short week after an intense divisional rivalry. But the Titans already have beaten Minnesota and play at Chicago next week, so this is a team with a large say in who wins the NFC North.

Notebook: Team Hopes For Bye-Week Boost

As expected, the Green Bay Packers returned to the practice field on Monday a much healthier team than the one that last played a game on Oct. 19 against Indianapolis.

Cornerback Al Harris, receiver James Jones, safety Atari Bigby and defensive end Michael Montgomery were all back at practice after missing significant time due to injuries.

"I thought this was a very good time for a bye week for us," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "Because we needed to get healthy, and it looks like we've achieved that on most fronts.

"Being here throughout the weekend, I thought the guys, every time I came in they were in here getting treatment and so forth. I thought Pepper Burruss and his staff did a great job getting those guys the extra time in the training room. They took full advantage of it."

McCarthy characterized Harris (spleen) and Jones (knee) as back on a trial basis, and their bodies' response to Monday's workout would determine their availability the..

After seven games the Packers rank second in the NFL in opponents' average starting field position after kickoffs at the 23.5-yard line. Green Bay ranks fifth in the NFL by holding opponents to just a 5.8-yard average on punt returns.

Cornerback Will Blackmon ranks fourth in the NFC with an 11.3-yard average on 16 punt returns, including a 76-yard return for a touchdown in the season-opening win over Minnesota.

Kicker Mason Crosby has connected on 11-of-14 field goal attempts and is tied for fourth in the NFL with 10 touchbacks on kickoffs. Punter Derrick Frost has averaged 43.8 yards on 28 punts with a 37.6-yard net.

In the last of a three-part series of conversations with the team's coordinators, Packers.com sat down with third-year special teams coordinator Mike Stock during the bye week to take a look back at the first seven games and look ahead to the rest of the '08 season.

After seven games the Packers defense is ranked 15th in the NFL, allowing an average of 327.9 yards per game. Green Bay is No. 26 in the league in rushing defense and No. 9 against the pass.

In Sunday's win over the Colts, the defense shut out Peyton Manning and his high-octane offense for more than three full quarters. After the Colts scored on their opening drive of the game, they did not score again until less than two minutes remained in the contest, when the outcome was long decided.

The defense had two more interceptions in that game to increase its league-leading total to 13, and it returned both of them for touchdowns, the second game this year the defense has returned two picks for scores. Safety Nick Collins and cornerback Charles Woodson each have two of those touchdowns, and they have posted four interceptions apiece, tied for the league lead.

Q&A With Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin

After seven games the Packers offense is ranked 14th in the NFL with an average of 328.9 yards per game. Green Bay is No. 10 in the league in passing offense and No. 22 in rushing, but in Sunday's win over the Colts running back Ryan Grant posted his first 100-yard rushing game of the season.

The offense is coming off probably its finest all-around performance of the season with no penalties and no turnovers against the Colts, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers posted his fifth game of the season without an interception.

Rodgers currently ranks fifth in the NFL with a 98.8 passer rating, and is second in the league on third down with a 120.3 rating. Wide receiver Greg Jennings leads the league with 685 receiving yards.

Healthy Cole Showing Strong All-Around Presence

Last year, when defensive tackle Colin Cole got his first chance to make a significant impact on the Packers' defense, he came through, but due to an injury he was never able to build on that performance.

This year Cole is again making an impact, and he's steadily showing up more and more with each successive week.

Back in 2007, Cole was somewhat of a bit player in the Packers' defensive line rotation as a backup to the team's top three defensive tackles -- Ryan Pickett, Johnny Jolly and Corey Williams. Through the first 10 games of the season, he was inactive twice because of a mild concussion and twice because of gameday roster decisions, and he made just eight tackles in the six games he did play.

But then Jolly went down with a season-ending shoulder injury against Carolina on Nov. 18, and with rookie Justin Harrell not yet recovered from an ankle injury, Cole immediately moved up in the rotation for the Thanksgiving game four days later in Detroit.

Secondary Nearing Full Strength

Green Bay's defensive backfield is coming off perhaps their finest performance of the season against a high-powered Indianapolis Colts offense on Sunday, and after this weekend's bye they could very well benefit from the return of two starters in cornerback Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby.

Harris, who has missed the past four games because of a spleen injury sustained in a collision with linebacker A.J. Hawk in the first half of the Sept. 21 game vs. Dallas, said Tuesday that he "feels good" and is now just waiting to be cleared to return to the field by the team's doctor.

Bigby, who has been sidelined the past five games after sustaining a hamstring injury toward the end of the first half at Detroit in Week 2, practiced last Thursday but wasn't able to finish the workout. The team elected to hold him out Sunday with the hope he could return following the bye.
Notebook: Returning Healthy Is Goal Of Bye

Like most bye weeks, the Green Bay Packers' annual midseason break will be focused on getting players rested and healthy for the remainder of the season, and there are key players who need that rest on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the perfect candidate for a break, having played three full games following an injury to his throwing shoulder in Week 4 at Tampa Bay.

Other starters who have played hurt in recent weeks include tackle Chad Clifton (hamstring), linebacker A.J. Hawk (groin), defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (tricep), center Scott Wells (shoulder/chest) and cornerback Charles Woodson (toe).

Pickett and Wells both played Sunday with harnesses on to limit their movement and prevent further injury, but it won't be known until the team returns to practice next week if those harnesses will still be needed.

How much Woodson's broken toe, which was originally fractured in the season opener, will heal isn't known either, but th..

Game Notes: Blocked FG First Since '05

The Packers' defensive linemen had a good day getting their arms and hands in the way of Peyton Manning's passes, and Johnny Jolly also succeeded in getting his arm in the way of a field-goal attempt.

Of all the big plays made by Green Bay's defense on Sunday, don't underestimate Jolly's block of Adam Vinatieri's 45-yard field goal try midway through the third quarter. It came with the Packers ahead 24-7, and had Vinatieri made it, the Colts would have pulled back within two scores with plenty of time remaining.

Instead, after the block, the Packers responded with a field goal of their own and the Colts never did get within two scores in the second half.

Interestingly, the blocked field goal was the first of the Mike McCarthy era. The last time the Packers blocked a field goal was on Nov. 6, 2005, when Cullen Jenkins blocked one against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jolly's block also came one play after one of the defensive linemen's three batted passe..

Grant, Offensive Line Find Rhythm

Sunday afternoon against the Colts, running back Ryan Grant accomplished two firsts on the season. Not only did he get in the end zone for the first time, but he also posted 100 yards on the ground for the first time in '08.

Grant rushed for 105 yards on 31 carries against Indianapolis, giving him 30-plus carries in back-to-back games after toting the ball 33 times last Sunday in the Packers' 27-17 win at Seattle. During Grant's breakout 2007 season, he never broke the 30-carry plateau in a game.

"It was about time," Grant said. "It was good to get in the end zone and good to get 100 yards. Of course I think everybody knows, me and the coaches, there was definitely yards left out there on the field.

"I'm happy we got that win the way we did. It was great to get that feeling back at Lambeau Field."

Safeties Double Up On Manning

Safeties Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse were able to achieve a feat that has only been done one other time in Colts Pro Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning's career as they each returned interceptions for touchdowns against him on Sunday.

Collins returned an interception early in the third quarter 62 yards for a score and Rouse's came with under five minutes remaining when he tied a franchise record with a 99-yard return for a touchdown. He matched Tim Lewis' return vs. the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 18, 1984.

The only other game in Manning's 11-year career that he was picked off twice for touchdowns came over seven years ago when Patriots defensive backs Ty Law and Otis Smith both had interceptions for touchdowns in New England's 44-13 win over the Colts on Sept. 30, 2001.

"Our line got great pressure on him," Rouse said. "Our secondary and our coaching staff did a good job of mixing it up so he couldn't get comfortable back there. Really I just think the defense ..

Game Review: Plan Works To Perfection Against Colts

It's incredibly satisfying when a game plan comes together, and the Packers couldn't have scripted a better way to beat the high-octane Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in front of 71,010 at Lambeau Field.

It started with a ball-control offense that used running back Ryan Grant as a workhorse on the ground and quarterback Aaron Rodgers as an efficient passer and field general to dominate time of possession early. And it finished with a defense that stayed fresh throughout and ultimately turned two interceptions by a physical, ball-hawking secondary into scores.

The result was a 34-14 victory in Green Bay's most impressive showing thus far in 2008. With their second straight win following a three-game losing streak, the Packers improved to 4-3 and remained tied for first in the NFC North with the Chicago Bears heading into a much-needed bye week.

"That's the way it was supposed to look," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "We've played physical football for four qua..

AP Game Summary: Packers Rout Colts 34-14 Heading Into Bye

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Normally, it would be the sort of thing Peyton Manning loves: An opponent off to a shaky start and playing without two of its starting defensive backs.

But the Green Bay Packers and their patchwork secondary did more than keep Manning in check on Sunday. Heck, they almost outscored him.

Safeties Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse both ran interceptions back for long touchdowns as the Green Bay Packers beat the Indianapolis Colts 34-14 at Lambeau Field on Sunday, regaining some of the swagger they lost during a recent losing streak.

"That's the way we play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That's who we are."

The Packers (4-3) have won two straight after snapping a three-game losing streak at Seattle last Sunday. Green Bay has a bye next week then plays at Tennessee Nov. 2.

It's the worst start to a season for Indianapolis (3-3) since 2001 -- the last time the Colts didn't make the playoffs. Colts coach Tony Dungy said he c..

Halftime Summary: Packers Lead Colts 17-7 At Half

The Packers scored on three of their four possessions in the first half on their way to a 17-7 halftime lead over the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field.

Green Bay put together an impressive 11-play, 89-yard drive to go up 17-7. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers connected with wide receiver Donald Driver on a play-action pass on the opening play for 24 yards, and then the Packers converted a 4th-and-1 from their own 44 with a 7-yard run by running back Ryan Grant off tackle.

Rodgers later hooked up with wide receiver Ruvell Martin, who absorbed a bit hit from Indianapolis linebacker Gary Brackett, for a 17-yard gain down to the Indianapolis 11. Grant scored on the next play on an 11-yard run off left tackle, his first rushing TD of the season.

The Packers got on the board first with a 31-yard field goal by Mason Crosby, but the Colts responded with a 10-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 3-yard run by running back Dominic Rhodes, who had 31 yards on seven carries on ..

The players competed against soldiers stationed in Kuwait, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in Madden NFL 09 and HALO 3. The competitors were able to see and hear each other via a video conference setup during the game.

Tauscher was matched up against Marine Corporal Timothy Headrick, a Green Bay native with the 1st Marine Logistics Group in Al Taqaddum, Iraq.

Notebook: Talented Tandem Will Test O-Line

The Packers will face one of the top pass-rushing tandems in the league on Sunday in Colts defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

Freeney is second in the NFL in sacks since 2002 with 63, trailing only Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor, who has posted 78.5 sacks during that span. Mathis leads the Colts with five sacks in five games this season, and has recorded 47 sacks during his six-plus seasons in the league.

"Very quick off of the ball and they are explosive players," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. "They have some unique pass-rushing moves. They are going to be a challenge for us.

"They don't like to stay blocked. Obviously they are not the biggest defensive ends in the NFL. Sometimes you get engaged but they work like heck to get off that block, whether it be run or pass."

Long Drives, Loud Crowd Needed To Combat No-Huddle

With the Indianapolis Colts bringing their up-tempo no-huddle offense to Lambeau Field on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers no doubt need their defense to be sharp and on top of its game.

But the Packers are hoping two other counter-measures will help limit Indy's effectiveness with the no-huddle as well - long, ball-control drives on offense, and a hefty dose of crowd noise.

From an X's and O's perspective, the Colts' no-huddle offense is designed primarily to do one thing, and that's reduce or eliminate the personnel substitutions the defense can make. All NFL defenses these days like to employ certain run stoppers on first down and pass rushers on third down, but the Colts' no-huddle forces opponents to pick one defensive package - or risk Peyton Manning calling for the snap with too many defenders on the field - and stick with it for an entire drive.
Notebook: DBs Continue To Heal Up

The Green Bay Packers are getting closer and closer to having their starting secondary able to play together once again.

Safety Atari Bigby, who hasn't played since injuring his hamstring in Week 2 at Detroit, returned to practice for the first time on Thursday on a limited basis and has a chance to play on Sunday.

Meanwhile cornerback Al Harris, who is still doubtful for Sunday with his injured spleen, went through some limited practice work with a weighted vest on for the second straight day, and he could return after the bye week.

In addition, with safety Nick Collins seemingly putting his back issues behind him, safety Aaron Rouse removed from the injury report Thursday after sustaining a mild concussion in last week's game, and cornerback Pat Lee upgraded to limited practice work following some back spasms, the defensive backfield on Sunday likely will be as healthy as it's been in over a month. And it could perhaps be fully healthy, with the exception..

Chillar Standing Out On Special Teams

The Packers' punt and kickoff coverage units have been an area of strength thus far this season, and one of the key contributors has been fifth-year linebacker Brandon Chillar, who is seeing significant time on special teams for the first time since early in his career.

Chillar, who was Green Bay's lone acquisition in unrestricted free agency this past offseason after playing four seasons for the St. Louis Rams, leads the team with 10 special teams tackles through the first six games.

"He's been fantastic," special teams coordinator Mike Stock said. "He's got great athleticism and skill in the capacity of diagnosing plays and getting to the ball fast.

"I had him when he was a rookie at St. Louis and knew he was going to be a big-time player in this league and he's done a heck of a job. We're really happy to have him here. He's helped us on special teams big time."

Lambeau Field Tops Stadium Rankings

For the second consecutive season, Lambeau Field finished first in Sports Illustrated's NFL stadium rankings.

In September the magazine asked readers to complete a 19-question online survey ranking their hometown stadium and broke down the answers in the categories of affordability and food, tailgating, team quality, atmosphere and accessibility.

Lambeau was the only stadium in the league to finish in the Top 5 in each of those areas, including first-place finishes in both affordability and food and atmosphere. The five categories were weighed equally.

Lambeau Field was ranked second in the NFL in tailgating behind Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo.

Sports Illustrated had more than 12,000 people fill out the survey, and a third of those submitted came from season-ticket holders. The average number of games attended by all respondents was 3.23 per season.

Secondary Preparing For Manning & Co.

The Green Bay Packers' secondary leads the NFL in interceptions, while the Indianapolis Colts' high-octane offense appears to be hitting its stride.

If there's any matchup that's going to decide Sunday's game at Lambeau Field, it's probably whether Green Bay's cover men or Indy's receivers make more big plays against the other unit.

A couple of weeks ago, it appeared the Packers might have a bit of an edge there, because the Colts were struggling on offense. Quarterback Peyton Manning, who missed the entire preseason following two knee surgeries, got off to a slow start, posting a quarterback rating of 82 or below the first three weeks.

In a season-opening loss to the Bears, Manning had a long pass play of just 20 yards in 49 attempts. The following two games, Manning threw four interceptions, though he rallied the Colts to 18 straight second-half points in the final 16 1/2 minutes to overcome a 15-0 deficit to the Vikings.

Notebook: Harrell Back In Action

Defensive tackle Justin Harrell, who spent the first six weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list following two offseason back surgeries, was back on the practice field Wednesday for the first time this season.

"I think I am more excited than anybody just knowing that I am out there and finally healthy," Harrell said. "I'm just focused on trying to get back out there on the field on Sundays and help this team out."

Harrell said he did not experience any pain during Wednesday's practice, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy said the team will utilize the entire week before making a decision on Harrell's availability for Sunday's game vs. Indianapolis.

"I'm not going to put him in the position where he can't be successful," McCarthy said. "I don't think that's very smart. I know our injury situation would create more urgency for that, but we've got to make sure he is ready to play, just like any other player that comes off of a medical situation."..

Game Experience Fosters Rapid Growth For Rookies Nelson, Thompson

Injuries have forced the Packers to call upon some of their younger players for contributions earlier than perhaps expected this season, and two members of the 2008 draft class answered that call effectively in the 27-17 victory at Seattle last Sunday.

Second-round draft pick Jordy Nelson and fourth-rounder Jeremy Thompson are both showing the growth and progress hoped for since they've been getting more game action in recent weeks. The coaching staff continues to mention how both rookies are "playing faster" now, and their contributions on Sunday were particularly noteworthy because they were both matched up against Pro Bowl players.

Nelson, who has usurped the No. 3 receiver spot in the wake of James Jones' knee injury, tied his career highs with four catches for 42 yards in Seattle, with most of that damage coming against Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Trufant.
Notebook: Wynn Handles Emergency Duty

In the span of just a couple of days, running back DeShawn Wynn went from toiling on the practice squad, to getting on the plane for Seattle, to throwing maybe the biggest block during the Packers' 27-17 win over the Seahawks on Sunday.

An unusual set of circumstances created the chain of events. First, third-string running back Kregg Lumpkin returned to practice last Thursday from an injured hamstring but badly re-aggravated the injury. So on Saturday, Lumpkin was placed on season-ending injured reserve and Wynn was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.

Then, later Saturday while the team was in Seattle, No. 2 running back Brandon Jackson got sick, suffering through a sleepless night with flu-like symptoms. Suddenly, come Sunday morning, Wynn was Ryan Grant's primary backup and handling the third-down role, putting him on the field for the first time since last Oct. 29, when a shoulder injury in Denver ended his rookie season.

Game Notes: Kuhn Gets Into The End Zone

SEATTLE - For the second time this season a Packers fullback scored the first touchdown of his career with a 1-yard reception.

On Sunday it was third-year fullback John Kuhn's turn as he caught a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers in the third quarter to give the Packers a 14-point lead over the Seahawks.

In the season-opening win over Minnesota, fullback Korey Hall scored the first touchdown of his career on a 1-yard strike from Rodgers.

"We love when they get the ball in the end zone," wide receiver Greg Jennings said. "We were actually making a joke about it this past week, saying how the fullbacks don't get the ball anymore. I think Aaron kind of took that to heart."

Sunday was also only the second game this season that the Packers have had both fullbacks at their disposal for an entire game. Hall suffered a knee injury early in Week 2 at Detroit and was inactive for the next three games before getting the start against the Seahawks.

Game Review: Third-Down Play On Both Sides Keys Third Win

SEATTLE - Packers players and coaches have repeatedly talked the past few weeks of the team's inability to play four quarters and finish games, but on Sunday Green Bay displayed one of its most complete performances of the season in a 27-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Packers (3-3) and put them in a three-way tie atop the NFC North with the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings.

"I thought the win today was a smart win for our football team," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I thought we played very well throughout the major situations. To control the time of possession the way we were able to, to come into this stadium which is a tough place to play against a very well-coached football team, just very pleased with the victory.

"The number of long drives the offense was able to sustain was obviously a big factor, and the field position, the defense playing at the level they played with the turnover..

Jennings Continues Big-Play Production

SEATTLE - Even when Greg Jennings is having a quiet day, he still manages to make a big play.

Jennings had just two catches for 19 yards through the first 2 1/2 quarters on Sunday, only to bust free for the go-ahead 45-yard touchdown reception that put the Packers on top to stay in their 27-17 victory at Qwest Field.

Long touchdowns are almost becoming commonplace for the third-year receiver. Sunday's big catch was his 19th career TD in the regular season, and his 10th of at least 40 yards in length. In fact, Jennings has a staggering average of 37.3 yards per TD reception for his career.

Jennings has shown a knack not only for coming up big, but for doing so at big times. On Sunday, his 45-yard TD came with the score tied at 10 and roughly six minutes left in the third quarter.

Last season he had critical go-ahead scores of 57 yards vs. San Diego, 82 yards at Denver in overtime, and 60 yards at Kansas City.

Defense Turns Its Game Around

SEATTLE -- It might have come against a third-string quarterback and a banged-up receiving corps, but the Green Bay defense needed a performance like this.

Really needed it.

A defense that had struggled to stop the run and pressure the quarterback during a three-game losing streak succeeded in both areas on Sunday, holding the Seahawks to just 177 total yards in a 27-17 victory over at Qwest Field.

The effort marked the first time since Dec. 21, 2006, vs. Minnesota that the Packers held an opponent under 200 total yards, and that total on Sunday was an even more impressive 115 yards midway through the fourth quarter before Seattle put together a long touchdown drive in the final five minutes.

"The biggest thing on defense is we played with a lot of energy, we played with a lot of enthusiasm, and we didn't make as many mental errors," middle linebacker Nick Barnett said. "We played very mistake-free, and when you play like that, it's hard for offens..

AP Game Summary: Packers Win 27-17 At Seattle

SEATTLE -- Aaron Rodgers turned his sprained shoulder into a lesson for any Packers who may still be missing his predecessor. The first-year starter is showing grit and leadership that would make Brett Favre proud.

Rodgers again ignored the shoulder injury and a crunching early hit on Sunday to run for a tying touchdown, then threw two scoring passes in the second half to perhaps save Green Bay's season in a 27-17 victory over the sinking Seattle Seahawks.

"Everybody plays with injuries in this league. But to not practice for two weeks, to not throw the ball at all, I'm proud the way I was able to play today," Rodgers said with a shy smile after he was 21-for-30 with 208 yards.

The Packers (3-3) stopped a three-game losing streak and are suddenly tied for the NFC North lead.

"Hopefully it shows my teammates that I will put my body on the line for them and I care about them a lot, that come Sunday I'm going to give it all I can," Rodgers said, recal..

Packers and Seahawks Tied At 10 At The Half

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers scored on a 1-yard run with just over a minute remaining in the first half as the Packers and Seahawks are tied at 10 at the break.

The officials originally ruled Rodgers down short of the goal line, but the booth review showed that his knees were not down as he extended the ball to break the plane for the touchdown.

The score capped a 13-play, 66-yard drive that was highlighted by a 19-yard pass from Rodgers to wide receiver Donald Driver on third down down to Seattle's 44, and the pair hooked up again two plays later for seven yards, with a personal foul face mask penalty on Seattle cornerback Jordan Babineaux added on.

After forcing three-and-outs on the Seahawks' first two possessions, the Packers got on the board first with a 29-yard field goal by Mason Crosby. The drive started at Green Bay's 46 after a 23-yard punt return by cornerback Will Blackmon, and Rodgers connected with wide receiver Jordy Nelson three times for 32 y..

Notebook: No Throwing For Rodgers, But He's Ready To Go

For the third straight day, quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not throw at practice as he rested his sprained right shoulder Friday, but he said he feels better than he did a week ago and will get the start Sunday at Seattle.

"The decision to hold Aaron Rodgers from throwing today was a medical decision," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "Dr. (Pat) McKenzie in his evaluation this morning felt it was best for Aaron not to throw today, so that's why his practice reps were limited, and he'll be ready to go Sunday."

Rodgers' availability last week against Atlanta came right down to game day as he worked out Sunday morning for McCarthy, but Rodgers said he has seen "marked improvement" in his shoulder, which he originally injured Sept. 28 at Tampa Bay.

"I would have liked to have done a little throwing but I did as much as I could with the run game and the mental reps," Rodgers said. "I feel good about the game plan and my preparation."

Ground Game Making Progress

The Green Bay Packers haven't cured all the ills of their ground game yet, but the rushing attack is definitely coming around.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin often looks at the number of negative yardage plays and the number of explosive gains to assess just where the ground game is. Which makes sense, because after all, an average of 4 yards per carry rarely if ever means a team is getting 4 yards every time it runs the ball. But if a team is getting enough explosive runs to offset the forgettable plays, the rushing average will reflect it.

Three weeks ago, the Packers' ground game was somewhat stagnant. Against the Dallas Cowboys, the offense rushed for a respectable 84 yards on 21 carries but didn't have a gain of 10 yards or longer, nor a negative rush. That meant things were about to head one direction or the other - the running backs were on the verge of busting loose, or defenses were going to start crashing gaps and stuffing the run.

Unfortunatel..

Harrell Hoping To Add Depth On D-Line

The Packers' defensive line has been one of the positions hit hardest by injuries so far this season, but it could soon be receiving a boost from a player getting close to returning to action.

Second-year defensive tackle Justin Harrell, who has been on the physically unable to perform list for the first five games following two offseason back surgeries, will be eligible to practice with the team next week.

The team will then have three weeks to put him on the active roster or place him on injured reserve, but Harrell said Wednesday that he is pain-free and ready to get back out on the field.

With Cullen Jenkins, who started the first four games at right defensive end and also moved inside on passing downs, being placed on season-ending injured reserve Oct. 1 with a torn pectoral, the Packers have only three true defensive tackles on the roster in starters Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly and backup Colin Cole. Defensive ends Jason Hunter and Michael Montgome..

Notebook: Qwest's Noise Nothing New For Packers

Seattle's Qwest Field is known as one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, but the Packers won't be caught off-guard by that on Sunday.

Green Bay traveled to Seattle for a Monday night contest in 2006, and most of the current team got a taste then of how noisy Qwest can be.

Receiver Greg Jennings, then a rookie, recalled talking with quarterback Brett Favre during pre-game warm-ups about the decibel level the Packers were about to encounter, and it was noticeable before the opening kickoff.

"I was like, 'If it's this loud in pre-game, I can only imagine what the actual game will be like,'" Jennings said. "They definitely give their team a boost. For them it's very exciting. For us we have to mentally be sound and be prepared for that noise.

"We have the speakers outside (during practice), but you can't really imitate that. It's something you just have to be alert for, everybody has to be prepared and be poised."

Notebook: Fast Start A Focus As Team Looks To Rebound

Coming off their first three-game losing streak since 2006 and heading to one of the toughest venues in the league, the Packers know that getting back in the win column this week will be a challenge.

But with Green Bay's next three games coming against '07 playoff teams and holding playoff aspirations of their own, several players said the time is now to correct the issues that have plagued the Packers in their losses this season.

"It's just a sense of urgency," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "We realize we've got to play well and it starts now. We realize we have 11 games left but it's time to start playing the way we feel we're capable of playing."

Green Bay's main struggles this season have centered on penalties (second in the league with 44), run defense (27th in the NFL) and slow starts (17 first-quarter points).

"We've been hurting ourselves with penalties," wide receiver Donald Driver said. "We'll start and have a big play and then it gets..

Production A Start For Humphrey

It was the kind of play the Packers have always felt tight end Tory Humphrey is capable of making, and why Humphrey has been given every chance to get past his injury troubles over the past three years and get on the field.

Last Sunday, the Packers were trailing Atlanta 17-10 in the fourth quarter and cornerback Tramon Williams had just intercepted a Falcons pass in the end zone, shifting the momentum Green Bay's way. On first down from the 20-yard line, Humphrey and fellow tight end Donald Lee were lined up side by side and went out into pass routes at the snap.

While Lee cut across the field, Humphrey went into a dead sprint up the seam, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit him in stride for a 37-yard catch-and-run that jump-started the Packers' game-tying touchdown drive.

It was just one play, but it put everything on display that the Packers have been waiting for Humphrey to show in a game - the deceptive speed for a tight end, the good route-runner with s..

Kids Tackle New Playground With Hometown Huddle Project

First was the work. Then it was play time, for everybody.

Seven Packers players and a group of students from Beaumont Elementary School in Green Bay put the finishing touches on the school's new playground on Tuesday, tackling piles of wood chips that began the afternoon taller than some of the kids themselves.

Using any combination of rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows, the wood chips were spread evenly throughout the new playground equipment, providing a soft, safe surface for the kids to run wild on when school let out less than an hour later.

The manual labor was part of this year's NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle project, and the kids in particular were wasting no time getting their new playground ready.

"You can tell they're excited," said safety Charlie Peprah, who along with offensive linemen Daryn Colledge, Tony Moll and Jason Spitz, cornerback Will Blackmon, receiver Brett Swain and linebacker Tracy White joined the dedicated youth on their c..

Notebook: Discipline Needed In Run Defense

The Packers' run defense struggles have been no secret, and after watching the film of Sunday's Atlanta game, when an opponent rushed for better than 175 yards for the third straight week, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said too many players are taking it upon themselves to stop the run.

As a consequence, the scheme is repeatedly breaking down, and the run defense needs to get back to working as a unit.

"A number of times -- it's almost like we took turns doing it -- was guys trying to do too much," McCarthy said. "I think that's something you try to guard against, you try to practice against.

"Run defense is all about gap control, the proper technique and playing to the guy next to you. And the way we're situated and organized on defense, it's very evident when something goes wrong, (it's) someone not being in their gap. We had it a number of times where the defender had his head in the right gap, he has his gap in control, and then he pulls out trying to make t..

Team Focused On Bouncing Back

The Packers know that the 2008 season is only five games old, but they are also well aware that if they don't get their struggles righted soon, it will become that much tougher for them to reach the goals they set at the beginning of the season.

After Sunday's loss to the Falcons, the Packers have now matched their loss total from 2007, lost three in a row for the first time since 2006, and posted back-to-back losses at home for the first time since '06 as well.

"I personally obviously didn't expect to be in this position, but it's where we are," defensive end Aaron Kampman said. "That's the reality and we deal with reality here. Every man has to continue to just look at himself and find ways to execute for four quarters."

Four of Green Bay's next six games will be away from Lambeau Field, but the Packers have been successful on the road under Head Coach Mike McCarthy, going 12-6 during his tenure.
Game Notes: Williams Turns Tide, But Only Briefly

At the time, it seemed like the play that was going to turn the game in the Packers' favor for good.

With the Falcons leading 17-10 and threatening to score early in the fourth quarter, Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan ran play-action and was looking for tight end Ben Hartsock in the end zone.

Hartsock was open initially, but Ryan underthrew the pass and Green Bay cornerback Tramon Williams made a highlight-reel interception, reaching out with his right arm and pulling the ball into his body one-handed.

Williams said he wasn't even responsible for the tight end on the play, but when he saw Hartsock slipping off the line into open space, he sprinted back to make the play.

The Packers seized the momentum from the turnover by driving 80 yards for the game-tying touchdown, erasing what had been a 10-point deficit.

"It sparked us for a while," Williams said. "We fought our way back in, came down and scored a touchdown, tied the game up. But then t..

Rodgers Plays Through Pain In Impressive Performance

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said all week that he would give quarterback Aaron Rodgers every chance to play against the Falcons, and that decision came right down to the wire Sunday morning.

Rodgers played through the pain of his sprained right shoulder in a gutty performance, finishing the afternoon 25-of-37 for 313 yards and three touchdown passes with one interception.

"Aaron Rodgers stepped up today," McCarthy said. "We talk about the health of our football team; we're going through a phase that every team goes through. That's what we're in right now and it's important for people to step up. He was an injured player that didn't practice all week and he stepped up large today."

Rodgers, who sustained the shoulder sprain last Sunday at Tampa Bay extending the ball for a first down on a run, was limited all week and didn't throw until Friday's practice. He threw again Sunday morning at 8:45 in a workout for McCarthy in the Don Hutson Center to see if he could..

Game Review: Complete Game Still Eludes Packers

Fits and starts are somewhat expected in the early stages of a football season. But the Green Bay Packers are beyond the first month now, and while they're still playing in spurts, both good and bad, the lack of consistency is catching up to them.

Another see-saw game on Sunday in front of 70,610 at Lambeau Field saw the Packers start slowly, rally behind a valiant and gutty effort from injured quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but ultimately fade at the end in a 27-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons that dropped Green Bay to 2-3 and out of first place in the NFC North Division.

"We're just not consistent," veteran tackle Mark Tauscher said. "We're way too up and down. We haven't played a full football game.

"This first half today, we didn't get it done, and we weren't able to overcome the first-half performance. If we just take the second half of this game, we're a good football team. But you're judged on four quarters and for many reasons we have not been able to pu..

AP Game Summary: Falcons Top Packers 27-24

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- With every rock-solid read and on-target spiral, Matt Ryan takes another step toward making everybody forget Michael Vick, Bobby Petrino and everything else in the Atlanta Falcons' ugly recent past.

The rookie quarterback turned in another sharp performance as the Falcons beat the Green Bay Packers 27-14 at Lambeau Field on Sunday, upstaging a gritty showing by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

It was the first road win of the season for the new and improved Falcons (3-2), putting a team that is supposed to be rebuilding over the .500 mark. Falcons coach Mike Smith had a feeling during pregame warmups that his young quarterback wasn't going to get rattled on the road this time around.

"He said, 'Hey, this is pretty cool,'" Smith said. "Just nice, calm, cool and collected."

Packers Trail 17-7 At Halftime To Falcons

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, getting the start after being limited in practice all week with a sprained shoulder suffered at Tampa Bay, threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Donald Driver, but the Packers trail Atlanta 17-7 at the half.

The touchdown came on a play-action pass on third down, and Driver made the catch over Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes and safety Erik Coleman in the middle of the end zone to narrow Atlanta's lead to 10-7. Running back Brandon Jackson had a 9-yard third-down carry to keep the drive going and running back Ryan Grant added a 12-yard run.

The Falcons scored on their first possession of the game, capping off a 10-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard TD pass from quarterback Matt Ryan to tight end Justin Peelle on fourth down. Ryan connected with wide receiver Roddy White on the first play of the game for a 37-yard gain and the duo later hooked up on the drive for a 19-yard gain on third down.

Collins' Preparation Paying Dividends

Free safety Nick Collins is playing what he feels is the best football of his career the first four weeks of the season, and his on-field success is a product of the work he is doing away from the field.

The fourth-year starter is tied for second in the league with three interceptions, one shy of his career total entering the season, and has posted a pick in each of the last three games. He also leads the defensive backs with 26 tackles and is second on the team with six passes defensed.

When asked about his fast start, Collins points to a decision he made heading into this season.

"This offseason I made it my business to just study film a lot and know what the opponent is trying to do to me," Collins said. "It's paying off for me right now. That's the biggest difference."

Collins said the film work is part of his workday routine at Lambeau Field but also continues on when he gets home. He said he typically watches each defensive play two or three ..

Notebook: Rodgers Will Be Game-Time Decision

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers made a few short throws at the start of practice on Friday before continuing the rehab on his shoulder, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy said he would probably take all the way up until game time on Sunday to decide whether Rodgers will play.

Rodgers is scheduled to continue his rehab on Saturday and then work out before Sunday's game to test the strength and pain levels in his shoulder. McCarthy has until 90 minutes before kickoff, or until 10:30 a.m. CT, on Sunday to set his active 45-man gameday roster, and he said he would probably take all that time before making the final call between starting Rodgers or rookie backup Matt Flynn.

"I think how he feels tomorrow and how he does Sunday before the game will be strong indicators," McCarthy said. "I'm preparing to go either way."

Rodgers is officially listed as questionable on the injury report. He wasn't going to make any predictions during a brief session with reporters in front of h..

Atlanta Backfield Provides Another Test

Over the past two weeks, the Green Bay Packers have faced both the Dallas Cowboys' and Tampa Bay Buccaneers' versions of a two-headed backfield, that classic combination of a power runner complemented by a speed back.

And now the Atlanta Falcons are bringing their duo to Lambeau Field, with their power guy leading the NFL in rushing through four games.

Atlanta's Michael Turner, a free-agent acquisition after backing up San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson for four years, started 2008 with a 22-carry, 220-yard performance against Detroit and has only added to it since.

He has a league-best 422 rushing yards and five TDs with a 5.5-yard average. Add to that speedy Jerious Norwood's 237 rushing yards and gaudy 7.0 average, and the Falcons have the No. 1 rushing offense in football supporting rookie quarterback Matt Ryan.

"When we were looking at free agency and how we wanted to try to start laying the foundation for this team, that we wanted to have a runn..

Notebook: Peprah Ready If Needed

Injuries on defense early this season have required the Packers call on some of their depth, and that could be the case again Sunday with third-year safety Charlie Peprah potentially making his first career NFL start.

Starting strong safety Atari Bigby, who has been inactive the past two games with a hamstring injury, was limited in Thursday's practice after not participating at all on Wednesday.

Second-year safety Aaron Rouse, who stepped into the starting role in Bigby's absence, sustained a knee injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game at Tampa Bay and did not participate in practice Thursday. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Rouse is "not coming along as fast as we would have hoped."

If both Bigby and Rouse are unable to play Sunday, Peprah would get the start against the Falcons, with cornerback/safety Jarrett Bush backing up Peprah and Nick Collins.

"You go back to training camp, Charlie was right in the thick of it," McCarthy said. "Charli..

Notebook: Group Effort Needed To Replace Jenkins

Head Coach Mike McCarthy was asked on Wednesday whether his defense will miss end Cullen Jenkins more against the run in the base package or as an inside rusher in passing situations.

The answer was clearly all of the above.

More than anything, what the Packers are going to miss with Jenkins -- who was put on injured reserve on Wednesday for a torn pectoral muscle suffered in last Sunday's game in Tampa -- is his versatile ability to disrupt an offense in any situation, from anywhere he lined up.

Coming off a 2007 season in which he battled and played through nagging injuries, Jenkins was off to the best start of his five-year career, posting 18 tackles (13 solo), plus 2 1/2 sacks, one forced fumble and one batted pass in the first quarter of the season.

"I would classify his first four games as dominant, time and time again, just the way he graded out, and for his season to end the way it did, it's unfortunate for Cullen," McCarthy said.

Rodgers Will Make Push To Play Sunday

Injured quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn't throw the ball at Wednesday's practice, but he and Head Coach Mike McCarthy both reiterated that he will be given every chance to play Sunday against Atlanta.

Rodgers, who sprained his right shoulder trying to extend the ball for a first down on a third-quarter scramble at Tampa Bay last Sunday, took a handful of snaps in the jog-through portion but just handed the ball off before heading in for rehabilitation.

McCarthy said the plan is for Rodgers to not throw at all again Thursday before being evaluated Friday to see if he has made the necessary progress to be ready for the game.

"He will be re-examined again on Friday morning, which is customary in our medical process through the week," McCarthy said. "The players go through evaluations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Aaron will follow the same pattern.

"As far as his progress that he's made from Monday to today, he's gotten better each day in rehab...
