(What factors will go into how long the starters will play?)
That's something that if you had asked me Monday, we'd play the whole game. But I think it's important for us to be smart with our football team. I want everybody to go through the week of preparation, and I want to use Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to make that decision. So I really don't have an answer for you, but I will be smart with the football team.

(With the guard situation, is there anything you can get out of this last game?)
I would just like the consistency to improve in some areas. That's what we're looking for, and another game will help those guys. It does not help with the number of times we have moved them. I'm aware of that. But it's important at that position for someone to grab a hold of it and solidify the interior of our line.

(After the Chicago game, you said you saw some things manifest from the St. Louis game. Anything in particular?)

Just visiting with Pat McKenzie, he has a mild ankle sprain. I'm hopeful he'll go this week.

I'm not sure exactly what play, but it was more of a bruise than a sprain. Pat thinks he might have just gotten kicked on the bone. He wasn't very concerned about it. I know Greg wasn't either.

(Any thoughts about your plan for playing players?)
As far as our plan for Detroit, we're going to play to win the game. We will start the football game just like we have every single week up until now. Now, how it will unfold during the course of the game, that has not been decided yet.

(How much of that is wiping the bad taste out of your mouth?)
That's part of it. I'm clearly not happy with the way we perform..

Well, I'll say this, Chicago handled it a lot better than we did. There is no doubt about that. It's no excuse. Our performance was poor today in all three phases. We did not handle the football every well. We had the ball on the ground too many times, Chicago did not. They handled the ball very well. The footing we tried to emphasize as much as we could the last couple of days. Playing with good balance, keeping your feet underneath you. I felt we were on the ground way too much today, so we didn't handle it very well.

(on the struggles)
Well, we didn't do anything very well. Our run blocking was sporadic in the beginning and was not very good in the second half. Pass protection we had some breakdowns in protection versus their pressure, and obviously y..

He was in the rehab group today. I have not gotten a report on how his rehab went. He was there for the jog-through and then he came back up top for rehab.

(Is it a tough decision with him, not wanting to make it worse?)
He's ready to play. He feels very good about the progress that he's made throughout the week. That's something with 48 hours left to the game that we need to be smart with. Ryan wants to play, he feels that he's ready to play, and Pat McKenzie is a little more cautious at this point. We'll take him all the way to the game because we still have two days left.

(What do you lose if Ryan's not in there?)
Very consistent, very good player for us all through last year and again this year. He's clearly the anchor, the two-gap. You talk about staying square, all the basic fundamentals and technique that are important in playing defensive tackle, particularly in the run game..

I have no idea. I have not talked to the trainers yet. But Ryan's status hasn't changed. We'll be smart with him throughout the week, and we'll make a decision at the end of the week if he'll play.

(Will you take the team outside at all, or does opening the doors of the Hutson Center take care of the cold?)
The opening the doors was what we were trying to accomplish as far as the weather. Going out on the Astroturf is something I'm not in favor of, or the FieldTurf. That's probably the way we'll go in the future.

(Why don't you like it?)
It's a different surface. I feel more comfortable on the FieldTurf in the Hutson Center. It's just a preference, and also the quality of practice, taking the wind out is a factor. You always have a quality practice in the Hutson Center.

Shocked? I wouldn't say I was shocked. Let me just say this, the Pro Bowl is something positive. It's a reflection of your football team. You have individuals being honored. We had four, some will go as starters. You look at the other, we have 10 individuals as alternates. I look at that as a positive. Am I surprised that a couple guys didn't make it? I would definitely say yes. If you look at Charles Woodson, I've had conversations with national media about him being a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. So he doesn't go to the Pro Bowl, you can question that. I think Nick Barnett has played outstanding in our two years together. Chad Clifton, if you've ever had to play without a top-notch left tackle then you would probably appreciate Chad more. We have individuals like that. It is a bit disappointing. Well, we've got two teams that are 12-2. We're playing for home-field advantage, and that will be our focus. But with that, we have been playing pretty much almost everybody at most of our positions and we'll continue with that mindset.

(Are you in a better situation if you do get into an area where you can rest players, because so many guys have gained experience?)

Very, very important. The win today gives us the first-round bye, and we'll be smart as we move forward with the health with our football team. We've been smart all along, starting with our training camp - that great schedule that you guys all loved. We'll continue to move forward. Chicago is still an important game, but it definitely gives us a chance to get some people back.

(What was the difference between the first half and the second half?)
Well, we didn't play very well in some spots in the first half. Our tackling on defense needed to improve, and I think they definitely did that in the second half. I thought our defense was outstanding in the second half. Offensively, we had some opportunities both in the first and second half. We had a favorable play call versus a pressure and we did not execute. They did a better job of that - give credit to the Rams. I'll say for the who..

(Can you talk about the example Chad Clifton sets with his durability?)
Chad does a great job getting himself ready during the course of the week. He's had a shoulder this week. Does all the extra as far as treatments in the training room. He's a very skilled player for us at left tackle, and the way we're designed offensively as far as our protection schemes and so forth, you have to have a left tackle with his ability. He gives us great flexibility to do some things where we don't have to help him or slide to him a bunch. He's able to handle their primary pass rusher pretty much week-in and week-out.

It's something I haven't thought about it. Any time you say the first time in Packers history, that means a lot. I think those are the types of things, when the season is completed, that you look back on and appreciate. But we are focused on St. Louis. That would be an excellent accomplishment.

(Now that you've clinched the division, is there anything that sticks out about how it all came together?)
I've talked about it over and over again as I stand up here week in and week out, our football team finished strong last year. I think a number of things came into place for us late in the season. I'll start with the injuries. Nick Barnett was poked in the eye. He returned in the second half. Chad Clifton was kicked in his shin and he did return. Chad also had a shoulder and we held him out after that. Charles Woodson was held in the fourth quarter. That was my decision.

(Can you talk about the offense and the running game?)
It's been an emphasis because of lack of productivity earlier in the year. We spent a lot of extra time on it this week. It was our primary focus coming into this game. I can't say enough about Ryan Grant. He's really coming into his own. You can see the comfort level that he has in the scheme. He's doing a great job when he gets to the second level of breaking tackles. We're very pleased with him. The run-blocking unit is getting better. I thought our guard play was solid. We have some things that we need to continue to work on but I was proud of the way we ran the ball today.

I have not asked him that. I don't think Brett will be hindered from his injury. He practiced at full strength today. Based on what he's going to wear on his arm, I couldn't tell you. He's been wearing a sleeve in practice, so he may wear it in the game. I'm not sure.

(Did he air it out today?)
Yeah. I thought he threw the ball well today.

(What was Woodson able to do today?)
Charles participated mostly in the team drills. He took his share of reps. I thought he looked pretty good. It'll be interesting to see how he responds in the morning after practicing. He's really picked up the progress as far as rehab and what he's been doing on the treadmill all week, and he looked pretty natural out there today. So tomorrow will be a big day for him.

(Is that why he's questionable, because you don't know how he'll be tomorrow?)

It's different. I thought Craig Nall did an excellent job. He took every rep today in the passing game. For him to come in with a new language, it's different from his time here in the past, I thought he did a good job with that. It was really a quality practice. We probably had too much energy at times. We had some extra-curricular activity after a few plays. That's a product of our players not practicing for some time. It's really a joy to coach this group. They really enjoy practice. They get after practice. Sometimes it gets to be a little much. We had a good practice as far as a Wednesday is concerned.

(Did Rodgers hurt his hamstring at the beginning of practice, or yesterday?)
On the last play of yesterday's practice he strained his hamstring. Today, he did not throw very well. He's day-to-day with him. We don't have any history with him. He's never done that before. ..

It was really our plan all along, at this point in the season, to add a third quarterback. Just getting ready for the playoff run. It was something we really planned all along, to answer your question, as far as the makeup of our roster.

(What does Nall give you over some other options?)
Veteran quarterback, has an idea of the system. He was here before. He's played in games, and we just felt he was the best fit for our stretch right here.

(What were your impressions of Mark Murphy?)
Very impressed with Mark Murphy in the time I was able to spend with him. I thought he was a very down-to-earth individual. We had a nice visit. I was very impressed with him. I'm looking forward to working with him.

OK, I'll start off with the injuries, the one true injury from the football game involving Brett Favre. He's been diagnosed with an elbow bruise. It's different than the injury he had last year against New England. It has more to do with the muscle, the belly of the muscle around the elbow. It's not as severe as last year, and he aggravated an old shoulder injury to his left shoulder. He was in for treatment today, and we see him playing next week against Oakland. With that I'll take your questions.

(Any nerve damage?)
Not that I'm aware of. I was told the injury was to the muscle. Last year it was to the nerve against New England.

(Did he get feeling back in his hand?)
It's starting to come back. Just to quote the medical staff, his streak is not in danger. He'll be OK.

(Would you consider resting him if it puts him in better shape for the long-term, like with Woodson?)

Brett doesn't run around like that anymore. That part is still not there. Actually Aaron Rodgers will be a great look for our defense for the way Tony plays because Aaron's very athletic, has the ability to run around and make plays.

OK, I'll start with the injuries. Kabeer had the ankle and knee sprain. We're still running tests on Kabeer as we speak. Aaron Rouse had a knee sprain. Mark Tauscher re-aggravated his ankle sprain. So did Tracy White, same thing there. Charles Woodson had a great toe injury. Donald Driver had a slight ankle sprain. Ryan Pickett had a knee sprain, and Colin Cole had the forearm fracture. Those are the injuries, and with that I'll take your questions.

(Will Cole be out for an extended period of time?)

I think he's going to be okay. He returned to the game and played down the stretch there.

(What was your thinking throwing 17 consecutive passes?)
Well, you never think he's going to miss one. As far as the heavy pass, we went to that in the second quarter. It was really just reaction to what was there. I anticipated a little more two-shell defenses, and a different variety of some of the formation personnel groups that we were in, so we went that way just more of a reaction to how they were playing us.

(How did Brett play, especially with all the consecutive completions?)

A little healthier. It was a cut down practice so we did a lot of job-through.

(How long did you go with the team part?)
We went through the normal team periods. I cut out a 7-on-7 and I cut out base run and pass, play-action pass team drill than a normal practice, about 25 minutes of a normal (practice).

(Is tomorrow basically a jog-through only?)
More of a walk-through. It's a travel day for us. We'll work on a Friday schedule. We'll meet in the morning. Then we'll have a walk-through in the gymnasium. Then we'll go down below and refer to it as a jog-through, but it's more of jog-through with the offense. The defense is more of a walk-through. So we'll do that. Come up and have lunch. Then go get on the plane.

(Has Grant been able to put all of his weight on that ankle?)

Pat doesn't have enough information, so just like I've stated, I'll use the exact words that he gave me, that it's going to be a minimum of a couple weeks. A lot of swelling.

Johnny Jolly has a shoulder. I spoke to Johnny coming in off the field. He thinks he'll be fine for Thursday. I haven't gotten a specific diagnosis from the doctor. Ryan Grant is an ankle sprain.

He went through the first part of practice and frankly I just wanted to see how well he could move and how he felt. He felt very good. The plan was just to use the first half-an-hour of practice as a testing opportunity and he went through that and we'll see how he feels tomorrow, but I just wanted to make sure that he's able to, his weight distribution and the soreness and so forth because I want to make sure he has 48 hours to get ready for the game.

On the Panthers
From what we have seen of the Panthers on film they have always been a physical football team. I have had some experience playing against John Fox and his football team from my years in New Orleans. I have a lot of respect for the way John goes about his business. I like the way they play. They challenge you schematically. If you go through their defense, their defensive line is the starting point. They don't have the depth that maybe they had in the past, but we are looking at this as a big time challenge. People can look at their road record and this team is 4-1 on the road. This is a game that we expect to be physical challenge.

On Brett Favre
Brett Favre has been very important to this football team. He is playing very well and at a very high level. In some game plans we've been very heavy in throwing the football. He has done an excellent job of handling the protection and everything that's involved in that. ..

On the offense playing well
It's been good. Our biggest thing is that we know we can execute. Early on in the season we were playing well but we weren't playing our best offensively. I think last week proved we can score at any time. I think when we run three, four, and five wide receivers people get scared and nervous.

On the offensive weapons
This has probably been the best receiver group I've played with in a long time. Our running game is now up to par. Now, a lot of people are expecting our offense to run the ball well. Our offensive line is blocking well. All around, on offense right now, we are solid.

On the difference in Brett Favre

A very good performance by our football team in all three phases. We anticipated a very physical game with Minnesota today, especially after the game at the Metrodome. I thought our guys really prepared well, starting with the defense with the shutout and stopping the run. That was the emphasis going into the game. Offensively, we wanted to establish our run game. It was a completion-oriented mindset as far as game plan against their defense. I thought the quarterback was sharp in that regard. I thought we were a little sloppy with the passing to start the game, in the first quarter. For the most part, I was very pleased with the performance in all three phases. That's clearly our best performance this year.

Am I inclined? We have a rotation going on with our guard positions. We'll do that Thursday and Friday and I'll make a decision at the end of the week.

(Are there enough reps to go around in practice?)
It's not ideal. You'd like to think that you're beyond that at this point in the season but that's where we are. The productivity and performance level of that position needs to improve. We're going to give the three guys an opportunity and see where we are at the end of the week.

It depends on how you want to look at it. I do not get caught up in that. It's an advantage sometimes to keep playing when you're playing good. That's the way I view it. One thing about bye weeks, there's also a theory that you may have regrets because you haven't played for so long. We could make an argument just coming off our bye week there were some things fundamentally we could have done a better job of. You can go back and forth on that. I'll just say this, we won a big game on Monday night, and our guys will be excited and prepared to play Sunday. That's the way I view it. Everybody gets a bye week, when it comes, it changes every year, but I don't think we're at a competitive disadvantage.

Anytime you're going for a vertical route, you're going for broke. It was very similar to the play that we scored on earlier in the game. We were actually sliding Donald Lee on the line to attack the middle of the field. They gave us a three-deep. It's much better play to go to Donald on a two-deep but they gave us three-deep and Brett went to the individual cut on the go route. Excellent read by Brett, excellent throw and excellent catch. The confidence of our football team was much higher than last year coming out of training camp. Second, we won the close games. At this time last year we lost two tough games at home against the Saints and Rams. Those are probably two of the bigger factors.

I don't think I eased up on them. You guys keep trying to make our training camp out to be soft. I thought we were smart with our time management. Every decision that we make is in the best interest of our football team, particularly health. Injuries are a part of it. Anything you can do from a scheduling standpoint to eliminate those types of injuries, particularly the fatigue injuries, then you do. That's what we did with training camp. I think it helped. Yeah, we feel good. Talking with both Greg and James post-practice, they felt they went through the practice OK, so we'll just forge ahead.

(With all these injuries now, has it made you question the training camp schedule at all?)
I think it was clearly the best way to go, just from the feedback I've gotten from our medical staff. That's really the group I leaned on the most as far as the feedback on how the camp went, during camp, and then post-camp. That's why you play the games. As far as the injuries, they're going to happen. I'm hopeful this is our rough patch that we're having early in the year. You go through stages like this. Once you get into the regular season games, injuries are going to happen. I think that's just a product of what's going on here the last two weeks. We've played two pretty physical football games.

We are pleased to be joined by Steve Mariucci, who is an analyst on NFL Network's NFL Game Day show. He was Brett Favre's quarterback coach in Green Bay from 1992 to '95. Brett led the NFL in passing yards those four seasons and ranked second in passing touchdowns.

Also we have Sterling Sharpe, co-host of NFL Network's Playbook show, which is on twice a week, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., and reaired each Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. Sterling played with Brett in his first three seasons in Green Bay from 1992 to '94. (What was the difference for you today offensively, especially in the second half?)
Well, first I thought we got into a rhythm early. We wanted to come into the game and start fast in the first quarter, especially it's so important to do that on the road with the atmosphere we were coming into here in New York. I thought we got off to a good rhythm early, and we hit a patch there in the second quarter. Our protection, we had penetration in our run game and I felt like we did a good job of adjusting that for the most part, particularly in pass protection, and our guys played extremely well in the second half.

Al Harris. I'll tell you what, I'll just go through the injuries right here. Michael Montgomery, his existing injury of knee, he'll be out this week still. Jason Spitz has a calf strain, so we'll get more information on him the next two days, and I'll know more. He'll be limited participation for Wednesday. Al Harris has an elbow sprain. We're waiting back for his MRI, but he feels good. He's in here for treatment and so forth. We'll evaluate him during the course of the week. Carlyle Holiday had some knee swelling. I think he'll probably be limited participation this week. Greg Jennings has the hamstring, hopeful he can go. Tony Moll still with the stingers. We'll see where he's at on Wednesday. I'm very happy with the special teams and what a great start for a rookie kicker. I can't be more happy for Mason and our special teams units. They're playing physical. I did not see a replay of the play. That's why you play the game. We'll tell them all the time in a gray area, go for it. I'm very happy with the outcome.

DeShawn Wynn has had two good practices. I thought he did a nice job yesterday after reviewing the film. Just seeing him today, I thought he had a good day. He'll have a big opportunity come Thursday night. He'll get a lot of carries in the game. It's a big day for him.

He's questionable.

We're talking about possibly playing him a couple series. We talked a little bit about it this morning. I'm going to let the week's work kind of dictate how much I play the offense. As far as play time as a whole, the offense will probably play a little more than the defense. You could see the way we practiced today, we have a ton of different combinations. We had a lot of guys working the opponent compared to more guys working the game-plan stuff, and what we're trying to do is make sure everybody gets equal quality of the work just to keep our conditioning up throughout the week. That's why you saw the different combinations of people out there today.

Not real specifics, other than the fact that he was feeling better today, and the doctors are still fairly encouraged. He's, as you guys know, you guys know better than me, you've all been around him during the time when I was out in Seattle, he's a remarkably tough professional football player that was also blessed with remarkable genetics, I think. But we're hopeful. I don't know how you can predict this, but we feel fairly good that he's going to be OK.

It was a small factor. It was really the whole offseason program as far as building off of this. We have two factors that I need to be aware of. One is the medical condition of our football team. With this latest group of injuries, it's all two to four weeks. The timing is not very good for us going from 75 to 53. That's the first problem. The second is that we have a number of positions that aren't answered yet. I need to clear those things up and I don't want to wait until Tennessee to do that. That's really why we're changing gears as far as playing our ones for three quarters in this game. We're going to play bunch of combinations. We need to sit down as a staff tomorrow and do that. I told the players today that they'll be working with someone they haven't gotten a lot of reps with because we have to get all the information t..

(What were your general impressions of Saturday night's game, and does your familiarity with the opponent help in the evaluations?)
Probably not. On that aspect of your question, probably not. You just evaluate who you're seeing. If you know who they're going against and you a have a little bit better gauge of the quality of that player, but probably not. In terms of what I thought of the game, I thought it kind of disintegrated, or something. First of all I thought our guys played hard and they played effectively. We moved the ball on offense, which there seemed to be a lot of angst around about that, so that was good. I thought our defense played pretty good, and our special teams played solid. Again, I think probably both teams, all things being equal, in a game like this where it's raining and it's 38-6 or something at halftime, I imagine everybody would like to just say OK, let's just call it.
