Ty Knott
Offensive Quality Control
Sixth NFL season
Second season with Packers
Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Ty Knott begins his second with the Green Bay Packers as offensive quality control coach.
Named to his position Jan. 17, 2006, by Head Coach Mike McCarthy, the 41-year-old Knott served the previous three seasons as a defensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints. He also has previous exposure to the NFL through two minority coaching internships, with Washington (1999) and Detroit (2001).
In his current role, Knott primarily assists wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson. His duties include breaking down opponent game film, drawing playbooks and analyzing defensive tendencies.
With 13 years combined experience at the pro and college level, Knott brings an assorted background to his role, having been exposed to both sides of the ball during his career. His work with offensive-minded coaches has assisted in his position with the Packers under McCarthy. He worked with Norv Turner during his internship with the Redskins and Tom Coughlin at Jacksonville. During Knott's tenure at Indiana, current Dolphins head coach and former Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron was head coach.
While with the Saints, Knott was responsible for all facets of game preparation on defense. He also served as an assistant to new Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss, who was the linebackers coach with the Saints.
In 2002, Knott worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars as offensive assistant/quarterbacks and aided in the growth of then-rookie QB David Garrard. On special teams, he also assisted the punt-coverage squad, aiding P Chris Hansen to a 2002 Pro Bowl selection.
Prior to entering the NFL coaching ranks, Knott spent seven years at the college coaching level, making stops at four schools.
In 2001, Knott served as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Greenville (Ill.) College. The season before, he spent a year as defensive backs coach at Mt. San Antonio (Calif.) Junior College, working with a defense that helped the Mounties finish 9-2 and win the South County Bowl, on the heels of a second consecutive conference championship.
He spent three seasons at Indiana University, tutoring the wide receivers (1997-98) and running backs (1999). During the '99 campaign, he helped in the development of current Cincinnati Bengals fullback Jeremi Johnson, an All-Big Ten selection that year.
Knott got his start in college coaching at Whittier (Calif.) College (1994-95) as wide receivers coach. He began his overall coaching career in 1992 at Ashland (Ore.) High School serving as defensive coordinator.
A strong safety at Oregon Tech in 1988, he helped the Owls finish third in the country in the NAIA. Earlier, he played football at Mt. San Antonio Junior College.
Possessor of a bachelor's degree in sociology from Southern Oregon State, Knott was a counselor at Leroy Boys Home in La Verne, Calif., in 1993 and served as a juvenile probation officer in Meford, Ore., in 1996. While coaching at Indiana, he earned a master's degree in applied health science.
Born in Los Angeles, Knott and his wife, Brandi, reside in De Pere with their two sons, Gavin, 7, and Reece, 5, and daughter, Avarie, 3. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family. His older brother, Rene, is the sports director at KSDK-TV in St. Louis, Mo.
